Data pertaining to 278 cultures of Yersinia enterocolitica isolated in Canada are summarized in this paper. Of this amount, 256 were isolated from humans, whereas 22 were of nonhuman sources. The typing of these cultures is presented together with their geographical location. Y. enterocolitica serotype O:3 biotype 4, phage type 9b, was practically the only serotype present in the Province of Quebec. This serotype O:3 was also predominant in Ontario, followed by serotypes O:5,27 and O:6,30; other serotypes were seldom isolated. In the central and western areas of Canada, Y. enterocolitica was occasionally isolated; the strains were indole-positive, serotypes O:5,27, O:8, and O:4,32.  相似文献

A sero-epidemiological survey, realized in the Medjez El Bab region (North-West of Tunisia), has concerned 180 dogs which status has been determined during the study. The animals were identified, then underwent an annual blood sampling during three successive years, in order to search for antibodies against E. canis and E. chaffeensis by indirect immunofluorescence. The results show that, in all sero-positive dogs, the levels of antibodies against E. canis were higher than those against E. chaffeensis. The sero-prevalence of E. canis was 42.8%, 50% and 48.9%, in 1994, 1995 and 1996, respectively, and was higher than that against E. chaffeensis during the three year studies. The incidence of E. canis infection was 12.6% during the three years whereas E. chaffeensis infection did not exceed 4.7%.  相似文献

This work presents data indicating that Y. pseudotuberculosis population, cultivated at lower temperature (6-8 degrees C), has a high potential of cellular and tissue invasiveness. Pseudotuberculosis has been experimentally shown to start as generalized infection due to the rapid (during 10-15 minutes) penetration of the infective agent through the epithelium of the mouth cavity, the small intestine, the urinary bladder, conjunctiva, pulmonary alveoli and vascular walls into the blood and then into internal organs. The data, obtained in this study, on the penetration of Y. pseudotuberculosis through any mucous surfaces in different species of warm-blooded animals are indicative, to a considerable extent, of the fact that this process occurs due to the action of nonspecific mechanisms.  相似文献

A total of 75 raw milk samples collected from a central dairy or from retailers in Alsace, France, were analyzed for the presence of Yersinia enterocolitica. Three procedures were used: enrichment at 4 degrees C for 1 month; enrichment in modified Rappaport medium at room temperature for 72 h after a preenrichment at 4 degrees C for 1 month; and enrichment in a new medium containing sucrose, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane, sodium azide, and ampicillin (PSTA) at 28 degrees C for 48 h after a preenrichment at 4 degrees C for 1 month. Isolation of Y. enterocolitica was made on Hektoen medium plus ampicillin. Sixty-one samples were positive (81.4%), but the PSTA medium produced the greatest number of isolates. Biochemical, serological, and phage typing of 40 isolates showed that chemotype 1 and serogroup O:5 were predominant. In seven cases, two different strains were obtained from the same samples. Most of the 66 isolates tested for their antimicrobial susceptibility were resistant to ampicillin and carbenicillin, and all were sensitive to tetracycline, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfonamides, and mercuric ions.  相似文献

Y. pseudotuberculosis cells grown at biologically low temperature have been shown capable of chemotaxis with respect to carbohydrates and amino acids. During cultivation at 36-37 degrees C Y. pseudotuberculosis cells retain this property for 10-15 hours and then lose it. The mechanism of chemotaxis makes it possible for Y. pseudotuberculosis to "find" human and animal tissues and can facilitate the realization of the pathogenicity potential of these bacteria. When administered orally to mice motile bacteria, i. e. those grown at 6-8 degrees C, have been more virulent for the animals than nonmotile ones cultivated at 36-37 degrees C.  相似文献

The Balkan Peninsula and the Dinaric Mountains possess extraordinary biodiversity and support one of the largest and most diverse wolf (Canis lupus) populations in Europe. Results obtained with diverse genetic markers show west‐east substructure, also seen in various other species, despite the absence of obvious barriers to movement. However, the spatial extent of the genetic clusters remains unresolved, and our aim was to combine fine‐scale sampling with population and spatial genetic analyses to improve resolution of wolf genetic clusters. We analyzed 16 autosomal microsatellites from 255 wolves sampled in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH), and Serbia and documented three genetic clusters. These comprised (1) Slovenia and the regions of Gorski kotar and Lika in Croatia, (2) the region of Dalmatia in southern Croatia and BIH, and (3) Serbia. When we mapped the clusters geographically, we observed west‐east genetic structure across the study area, together with some specific structure in BIH–Dalmatia. We observed that cluster 1 had a smaller effective population size, consistent with earlier reports of population recovery since the 1980s. Our results provide foundation for future genomic studies that would further resolve the observed west‐east population structure and its evolutionary history in wolves and other taxa in the region and identify focal areas for habitat conservation. They also have immediate importance for conservation planning for the wolves in one of the most important parts of the species’ European range.  相似文献

An interdisciplinary study was carried out of the telomere length and polymorphism of genes of the renin-angiotensin (ACE) and serotonin (5HTR2A and 5HTTLPR) systems in a population of old and very old inhabitants of northwestern Russia, as well as on their relationships to data from clinical and geriatric anamneses and psychological characteristics. By the method of factor analysis, a firm association was revealed between the telomere length and respondents?? age in subgroups of old and long-living respondents.  相似文献

A palaeoecological analysis of the Penarth Group (='Rhaetic') of southern England and Wales is undertaken in terms of a species-richness comparison with the Zlambach and Kössen Beds of the Austrian Alps. The three groups studied, bivalves, foraminifers and ostracodes, comprise the most important invertebrate faunas occurring in the deposits cited. All show significant diversity from the Alps into northwest Europe. Coupled with the disappearance of stenohaline elements including ammonites, and taking into account other facies information, the evidence suggests a transgression of a shallow epicontinental sea in northwest Europe at the end of the Triassic. The salinity of this sea (˜25–30%□) was appreciably below that of the Tethyan ocean.  相似文献

A total of 91 free-ranging black bears (Ursus americanus) from the Peace River region of northwestern Alberta was examined for helminths. Four species, Baylisascaris transfuga, Taenia krabbei, Taenia hydatigena and Dirofilaria ursi, were found. None of the bears was heavily infected. The abandonment by humans of marginal and less productive zones signifies an important change in land use in North Mediterranean agroecosystems. Human perturbations have led to a highly diversified landscape, with a mosaic made up of patches of land at different stages of succession, from cultivated fields to closed forest. Our aim here is to characterize ant assemblages and their functional groups in response to these land-use changes. This progressive abandonment results in an initial increase in ant richness and abundance, which can reach high levels if the succession proceeds as far as woodland. In terms of the ant functional groups, this land-use change implies: (1) the appearance of Subordinate Camponotini; (2) an increase in Generalized Myrmicinae, Cryptics and Cold-climate specialists in terms of ant species richness, overall abundance and, for Generalized Myrmicinae and Cryptics, an increase in abundance percentage; (3) a decrease in percentage abundance of Opportunists; (4) a progressive decrease in species richness as well as overall and percentage abundance of Hot-climate Specialists throughout the transformation from crops to woodlands; and (5) an initial increase of Dominant Dolichoderinae followed by a decrease in ant species richness, overall abundance and percentage abundance. Using the ant functional group approach for the clearly separate stages of the regeneration process is a promising method for comparing responses of ant communities to human land use.  相似文献

Bladder cancer is the most common malignancy among Egyptian males and previously has been attributed to Schistosoma infection, a major risk factor for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Recently, transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) incidence has been increasing while SCC has declined. To investigate this shift, we analyzed the geographical patterns of all bladder cancers cases recorded in Egypt's Gharbiah Population-Based Cancer Registry from 1999 through 2002. Data on tumor grade, stage, and morphology, as well as smoking, community of residence, age and sex, were collected on 1209 bladder cancer cases. Age-adjusted incidence rates were calculated for males, females, and the total population for the eight administrative Districts and 316 communities in Gharbiah. Incidence Rate Ratios (IRR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed using Poisson Regression. The male age-adjusted incidence rate (IR) in Gharbiah Province was 13.65/100,000 person years (PY). The District of Kotour had the highest age-adjusted IR 28.96/100,000 among males. The District of Kotour also had the highest IRR among all Districts, IRR = 2.15 95% CI (1.72, 2.70). Kotour's capital city had the highest bladder cancer incidence among the 316 communities (IR = 73.11/100,000 PY). Future studies on sources and types of environmental pollution and exposures in relation to the spatial patterns of bladder cancer, particularly in Kotour District, may improve our understating of risk factors for bladder cancer in the region.  相似文献

The ant communities of two adjacent sites bearing markedly different vegetation (heath and mallee) were studied using quadrat counts and pitfall traps in semi-arid northwestern Victoria. The ants were extremely abundant and rich in species (86 species from 27 genera were recorded from two 50 m × 25 m plots within 25 m of each other) and were dominated by species ofMonomorium and Iridomyrmex. Pronounced site differences in species composition were found, with 73% of the most abundant species showing a strong site preference. The ants exhibited marked seasonality: activity was highest in summer and lowest in winter and this was accompanied by a high turnover of species in time, resulting in pronounced seasonal differences in species composition. Most foraging was nocturnal during summer but was almost exclusively diurnal during winter, and individual species displayed distinctive patterns of diet foraging activity. Although the overall temporal distribution of the communities were apparently controlled by temperature, interspecific competition may also be an important factor influencing the seasonal and diel distributions of individual species, resulting in their high degree of temporal separation. The overall consequence is that although the study area contains many abundant species with similar ecological requirements, few of these are active in the same place at the same time.  相似文献

YscD is an essential component of the plasmid pCD1-encoded type III secretion system (T3SS) of Yersinia pestis. YscD has a single transmembrane (TM) domain that connects a small N-terminal cytoplasmic region (residues 1 to 121) to a larger periplasmic region (residues 143 to 419). Deletion analyses established that both the N-terminal cytoplasmic region and the C-terminal periplasmic region are required for YscD function. Smaller targeted deletions demonstrated that a predicted cytoplasmic forkhead-associated (FHA) domain is also required to assemble a functional T3SS; in contrast, a predicted periplasmic phospholipid binding (BON) domain and a putative periplasmic "ring-building motif" domain of YscD could be deleted with no significant effect on the T3S process. Although deletion of the putative "ring-building motif" domain did not disrupt T3S activity per se, the calcium-dependent regulation of the T3S apparatus was affected. The extreme C-terminal region of YscD (residues 354 to 419) was essential for secretion activity and had a strong dominant-negative effect on the T3S process when exported to the periplasm of the wild-type parent strain. Coimmunoprecipitation studies demonstrated that this region of YscD mediates the interaction of YscD with the outer membrane YscC secretin complex. Finally, replacement of the YscD TM domain with a TM domain of dissimilar sequence had no effect on the T3S process, indicating that the TM domain has no sequence-specific function in the assembly or function of the T3SS.  相似文献

DNA barcoding is a well-established tool for rapid species identification and biodiversity monitoring. A reliable and traceable DNA barcode reference library with extensive coverage is necessary but unavailable for many geographical regions. The arid region in northwestern China, a vast area of about 2.5 million km2, is ecologically fragile and often overlooked in biodiversity studies. In particular, DNA barcode data from the arid region in China are lacking. We develop and evaluate the efficacy of an extensive DNA barcode library for native flowering plants in the arid region of northwestern China. Plant specimens were collected, identified and vouchered for this purpose. The database utilized four DNA barcode markers, namely rbcL, matK, ITS and ITS2, for 1816 accessions (representing 890 species from 385 genera and 72 families), and consisted of 5196 barcode sequences. Individual barcodes varied in resolution rates: species- and genus-level rates for rbcL, matK, ITS and ITS2 were 79.9%–51.1%/76.1%, 79.9%–67.2%/88.9%, 85.0%–72.0%/88.2% and 81.0%–67.4%/84.9%, respectively. The three-barcode combination of rbcL + matK + ITS (RMI) revealed a higher species- and genus-level resolution (75.5%/92.1%, respectively). A total of 110 plastomes were newly generated as super-barcodes to increase species resolution for seven species-rich genera, namely Astragalus, Caragana, Lactuca, Lappula, Lepidium, Silene and Zygophyllum. Plastomes revealed higher species resolution compared to standard DNA barcodes and their combination. We suggest future databases include super-barcodes, especially for species-rich and complex genera. The plant DNA barcode library in the current study provides a valuable resource for future biological investigations in the arid regions of China.  相似文献

In a mixed forest in Hong Kong, the foraging ecology of nine species of insectivorous birds was studied. Leaves and branches of diameters smaller than 2 cm were the most frequently searched microhabitats. Gleaning was the most frequently used foraging method. Apart from Blue-winged Minla and Japanese White-eye, no two species used similar proportions of vertical strata and microhabitats at the same time. Bird species using similar proportion of microhabitats were foraging in different proportion of vertical strata. This niche segregation enabled the bird species to coexist in the same habitat. Velvet-fronted Nuthatch differed from other species by its more frequent use of branches of diameters larger than 2 cm and tree trunks. This might be one of the reasons why this exotic species successfully established a breeding population in the study area.  相似文献
