A major objective in ecology is to find general patterns, and to establish the rules and underlying mechanisms that generate those patterns. Nevertheless, most of our current insights in ecology are based on case studies of a single or few species, whereas multi-species experimental studies remain rare. We underline the power of the multi-species experimental approach for addressing general ecological questions, e.g. on species environmental responses or on patterns of among- and within-species variation. We present simulations that show that the accuracy of estimates of between-group differences is increased by maximizing the number of species rather than the number of populations or individuals per species. Thus, the more species a multi-species experiment includes, the more powerful it is. In addition, we discuss some inevitable methodological challenges of multi-species experiments. While we acknowledge the value of single- or few-species experiments, we strongly advocate the use of multi-species experiments for addressing ecological questions at a more general level.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the cytotoxic activity and inhibitory effect of terpinen-4-ol (T4ol) and carvacrol against single- and multi-species biofilms. The toxicity of each compound was tested on oral keratinocytes and evaluated by XTT assay. Inhibition and eradication of single-species biofilms were analyzed by crystal violet assay and the effect on multi-species biofilm composition was evaluated by qPCR. T4ol and carvacrol did not affect the epithelial cell viability, in contrast to chlorhexidine, which showed a high cytotoxic effect. Inhibition and eradication of single-species biofilms treated with T4ol and carvacrol were observed. The same inhibitory effect was observed for multi-species biofilms, especially on periodontal pathogens. In conclusion, specific concentrations of T4ol and carvacrol without toxicity towards the epithelial cells reduced the numbers of periodontal pathogens in single- and multi-species biofilms.  相似文献

Environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling—the detection of intra- or extra-cellular DNA in environmental samples—is a rapid and sensitive survey method for detecting aquatic species. Single-species detection methods (typically based on PCR or LAMP) have been shown to be more sensitive for detecting target species than multi-species detection methods, such as metabarcoding. However, previous studies have generally only compared these two eDNA detection approaches for a single target species and have used different methodological and statistical approaches. Here we present a comparison of single- and multi-species eDNA detection methods, drawing on two published case studies (one fish, one amphibian) and two new extensive datasets on a freshwater mammal (the platypus). To ensure consistent conclusions regarding the sensitivity of each eDNA method, we use the same hierarchical site occupancy-detection model for each dataset, incorporating uncertainty at the site, water sample, and technical replicate level. Overall, qPCR achieved higher detection probabilities than metabarcoding across species and datasets. However, differences in sensitivity between detection methods varied depending on methodological decisions concerning what constitutes a true positive detection (i.e., qPCR and metabarcoding thresholds). The decision as to which eDNA detection method to use should always be influenced by the study aims, but our results suggest that single-species detection methods based on qPCR may be preferable when the aim is to achieve a high detection probability for target species.  相似文献

There are two distinct research approaches to a theoretical framework for vegetation science. One involves critical analysis of observed patterns of multi-species community composition; the other entails experimental examination, at the population level, of processes in a multi-species context. Each approach is currently incomplete, but has questions in common with the other. Light, nitrogen and disturbance have been identified as critical factors determining vegetation composition by researchers using different theoretical frameworks. The increasing communication between vegetation analysts concerned with community pattern and experimental ecologists concerned with community processes may lead to a convergence in their theoretical concepts.  相似文献

Conventional theories of population and community dynamics are based on a single currency such as number of individuals, biomass, carbon or energy. However, organisms are constructed of multiple elements and often require them (in particular carbon, phosphorus and nitrogen) in different ratios than provided by their resources; this mismatch may constrain the net transfer of energy and elements through trophic levels. Ecological stoichiometry, the study of the balance of elements in ecological processes, offers a framework for exploring ecological effects of such constraints. We review recent theoretical and empirical studies that have considered how stoichiometry may affect population and community dynamics. These studies show that stoichiometric constraints can affect several properties of populations (e.g. stability, oscillations, consumer extinction) and communities (e.g. coexistence of competitors, competitive interactions between different guilds). We highlight gaps in general knowledge and focus on areas of population and community ecology where incorporation of stoichiometric constraints may be particularly fruitful, such as studies of demographic bottlenecks, spatial processes, and multi-species interactions. Finally, we suggest promising directions for new research by recommending potential study systems (terrestrial insects, detritivory-based webs, soil communities) to improve our understanding of populations and communities. Our conclusion is that a better integration of stoichiometric principles and other theoretical approaches in ecology may allow for a richer understanding of both population and community structure and dynamics.  相似文献

Bioavailability of different phosphorus forms in freshwater systems   总被引:26,自引:9,他引:17  
The recent literature on the bioavailability of different forms of P in freshwater systems is reviewed. Bioavailable P is defined as the sum of immediately available P and the P that can be transformed into an available form by naturally occurring processes. Methods used to estimate the bioavailable P pool, which vary between studies largely depending on the time perspective applied, are critically evaluated. Most studies on particulate P aim to determine the potentially available P pool. Potential bioavailability of particulate P is normally analysed in bioassays with algal yield determinations and the available P fraction is characterized from interpretations of results of sequential chemical extractions. NaOH-extractable P is in most studies the most algal-available P fraction. For soil samples and tributary water particulate matter, NaOH-P has often been found to be equal to algal extractable P. In other studies depletions of NaOH-P have accounted for the algal P uptake, but only a minor proportion of the fraction has been utilized. Organic P in lake water particulate matter and bed sediments of eutrophic lakes can also be algal-available to a significant extent.Studies on the bioavailability of dissolved P have often been concerned with immediate availability, or the minimum amount of available P. Such studies need other types of experimental design and normally assays with radiotracers are used. Immediately available P is frequently found to be less than P chemically assessed as dissolved reactive P (DRP) at low (< 10 µg DRP·l-1) concentrations. However, immediate availability may also approach or exceed DRP concentrations, especially at higher concentrations. Potential bioavailability, assayed as for particulate P, may generally render higher bioavailability than P assayed as immediately available. Large fractions of dissolved P remain unutilized and are primarily found in the high molecular weight fraction of dissolved P.  相似文献

It is well known that in many scalar models for the spread of a fitter phenotype or species into the territory of a less fit one, the asymptotic spreading speed can be characterized as the lowest speed of a suitable family of traveling waves of the model. Despite a general belief that multi-species (vector) models have the same property, we are unaware of any proof to support this belief. The present work establishes this result for a class of multi-species model of a kind studied by Lui [Biological growth and spread modeled by systems of recursions. I: Mathematical theory, Math. Biosci. 93 (1989) 269] and generalized by the authors [Weinberger et al., Analysis of the linear conjecture for spread in cooperative models, J. Math. Biol. 45 (2002) 183; Lewis et al., Spreading speeds and the linear conjecture for two-species competition models, J. Math. Biol. 45 (2002) 219]. Lui showed the existence of a single spreading speed c(*) for all species. For the systems in the two aforementioned studies by the authors, which include related continuous-time models such as reaction-diffusion systems, as well as some standard competition models, it sometimes happens that different species spread at different rates, so that there are a slowest speed c(*) and a fastest speed c(f)(*). It is shown here that, for a large class of such multi-species systems, the slowest spreading speed c(*) is always characterized as the slowest speed of a class of traveling wave solutions.  相似文献

The high affinity and specificity of biological receptors determine the demand for and the intensive development of analytical systems based on use of these receptors. Therefore, theoretical concepts of the mechanisms of these systems, quantitative parameters of their reactions, and relationships between their characteristics and ligand–receptor interactions have become extremely important. Many mathematical models describing different bioassay formats have been proposed. However, there is almost no information on the comparative characteristics of these models, their assumptions, and predic- tive insights. In this review we suggested a set of criteria to classify various bioassays and reviewed classical and contempo- rary publications on these bioassays with special emphasis on immunochemical analysis systems as the most common and in-demand techniques. The possibilities of analytical and numerical modeling are discussed, as well as estimations of the minimum concentrations that may be detected in bioassays and recommendations for the choice of assay conditions.  相似文献

Multi-species biofilm modeling has been used for many years to understand the interactions between species in different biofilm systems, but the complex symbiotic relationship between species is sometimes overlooked, because models do not always include all relevant species and components. In this paper, we develop and use a mathematical model to describe a model biofilm system that includes autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria and the key products produced by the bacteria. The model combines the methods of earlier multi-species models with a multi-component biofilm model in order to explore the interaction between species via exchange of soluble microbial products (SMP). We show that multiple parameter sets are able to describe the findings of experimental studies, and that heterotrophs growing on autotrophically produced SMP may pursue either r- or K-strategies to sustain themselves when SMP is their only substrate. We also show that heterotrophs can colonize some distance from the autotrophs and still be sustained by autotrophically produced SMP. This work defines the feasible range of parameters for utilization of SMP by heterotrophs and the nature of the interactions between autotrophs and heterotrophs in multi-species, multi-component biofilms.  相似文献

Quantitative expressions have been derived for bivalent equilibria with immobilized ligand systems and for the equilibria for an immobilized protein whose self-association is modified by binding with a soluble ligand, as analyzed by affinity chromatography. These general expressions have been applied in a reexamination of multivalency in the affinity chromatography of antibodies, as reported by Eilat and Chaiken (Biochemistry 18 (1979) 790) and also to studies of neurophysin-peptide hormone interactions using glass matrices reported by Swaisgood and Chaiken (Biochemistry 25 (1986) 4148).  相似文献

This paper studies a class of dynamical systems that model multi-species ecosystems. These systems are ‘resource bounded’ in the sense that species compete to utilize an underlying limiting resource or substrate. This boundedness means that the relevant state space can be reduced to a simplex, with coordinates representing the proportions of substrate utilized by the various species. If the vector field is inward pointing on the boundary of the simplex, the state space is forward invariant under the system flow, a requirement that can be interpreted as the presence of non-zero exogenous recruitment. We consider conditions under which these model systems have a unique interior equilibrium that is globally asymptotically stable. The systems we consider generalize classical multi-species Lotka–Volterra systems, the behaviour of which is characterized by properties of the community (or interaction) matrix. However, the more general systems considered here are not characterized by a single matrix, but rather a family of matrices. We develop a set of ‘explicit conditions’ on the basis of a notion of ‘uniform diagonal dominance’ for such a family of matrices, that allows us to extract a set of sufficient conditions for global asymptotic stability based on properties of a single, derived matrix. The incidence and the clinical course of patients suffering from sickle-cell syndrome (Hb SS; Hb SC; Hb S thal) in England and Wales are not known. In 1979 an ad hoc committee was formed to investigate these problems. Initially, a questionnaire was sent to 227 haematologists in England and Wales to determine the number of cases in these countries. The replies have indicated that 1367 cases were seen in 1978 and 1979. Probably this may represent only half the total number of cases. From this survey it has been possible to draw up a composite map showing the location of patients, which has provided a basis to determine the clinical course of the disease, and for further studies into the complications and management of sickle-cell disease in England and Wales. From a second questionnaire preliminary data about the general management and mortality in England and Wales have been recorded.  相似文献

The prudent assumption that carcinogen bioassays in rodents predict for human carcinogenicity is examined. It is suggested that in certain cases, as for example the induction of tumors against a high incidence in controls, or in situations in which high dose toxicity may be a critical factor in the induction of cancer, the probability that animal bioassays predict for humans may be low. The term 'biological risk assessment' is introduced to describe that part of risk assessment concerned with the relevance of specific animal results to the induction of human cancer. Biological risk assessment, which is almost entirely dependent on an understanding of carcinogenesis mechanisms, is an important addition to present mathematical modeling used to predict the effects of animal carcinogens that have been demonstrated after high dose exposure, to the effects of the much smaller doses to which humans are perceived to be exposed. Evidence for the conclusions reached by biological risk assessment may sometimes be supported by a careful review of human epidemiological data.  相似文献

Non-native earthworms can alter ecosystems by modifying soil structure, depredating seeds and seedlings, and consuming soil organic matter, yet the initial responses of plant communities to earthworm invasions remain poorly understood. We assessed the effect of non-native earthworms on seedling survival during germination and after establishment using six native and six non-native plant species grown from seed in single- and multi-species experimental mesocosms. We examined the extent to which earthworms (1) influenced seedling survival, (2) selectively depredated native versus non-native plants, (3) impacted establishment based on seed size and/or root morphology, and (4) shaped community assembly. The effect of earthworms on seedling survival varied temporally and among species but inconsistently with respect to species origin. Differences in seed/seedling survival translated to changes in community assembly. Earthworms tended to reduce species abundance, richness, evenness, and diversity in multi-species mesocosms and led to the divergence of communities by treatment. In general, species with large seeds and fibrous roots dominated communities with earthworms present, whereas species with small seeds and taproots only persisted in multi-species mesocosms without earthworms. Our findings suggest that earthworms act as ecological filters in the early stages of invasion to shape community composition based on plant morphological traits.

Tests have shown plant bioassays to be excellent for mutagenicity studies. Most studies with plant bioassays, however, have been carried out either in the laboratory, or if, in situ, as monitors of atmospheric contaminants. The primary purpose of this study was to assess the utility of in situ plant mutagenicity bioassays in monitoring water contaminants. The assay systems tested were the Tradescantia stamen hair and micronucleus assays for the detection of gene mutations and chromosomal aberrations respectively, and the Vicia faba bioassay system which detects chromosomal aberrations in root tips. The assays were used to test the effluent from a pulp and paper mill located on the north shore of Lake Superior. Assays were performed in a creek containing raw effluent and in the bay of Lake Superior into which the creek emptied. All in situ treatments were carried out for 24 h. The effluent from the creek was heavy with pulp and debris which coated the plant cuttings and the Vicia faba seedlings and may have restricted the uptake from the effluent. In the creek, at test sites 11.5 km from the source, the effluent was toxic to the Vicia faba roots as evidenced by a reduction in the mitotic index. The data for the Tradescantia stamen hair assay in the creek were equivocal. The cuttings from the creek test sites and the air and water control sites appeared to have undergone a physiological delay. Within a day or two after the return to the laboratory, that is 6-8 days after testing, flowering almost ceased and did not fully resume until about day 35. This reduction in flowering was particularly severe with the cuttings from the effluent and air control sites, making it very difficult to interpret the results. In contrast, the Tradescantia micronucleus and Vicia faba chromosomal aberration data were unequivocal; each produced positive responses at both test sites relative to the air and water controls. The results obtained for the bay sites with all 3 assays were in agreement. In that section of the bay visibly contaminated by the creek effluent, increases in stamen hair mutants, micronuclei, and chromosome aberrations were measured. In general, there was a considerable reduction in the number of mutant events observed for the water samples brought back from the test sites and tested in the laboratory.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Evidence to suggest that trichloroethylene may be a human carcinogen comes mainly from two small epidemiological studies with supporting evidence from human toxicity and genotoxicity studies and from rodent cancer bioassays. Careful analysis of these data reveal marked inconsistencies between the data, differences in the conclusions drawn by various authorities reviewing the same data and, for certain key human studies, a complete absence of exposure data. Much of the rodent cancer data may be dismissed as not indicative of a human hazard because the tumors result from either peroxisome proliferation, or as a consequence of exceptionally high metabolic rates that are found uniquely in mouse tissues, or because the tumors only occur in the presence of overt toxicity. A common mechanism invoked to account for the development of renal tumors in both rats and humans is unproven, there is contrary evidence to suggest that this mechanism does not result in renal cancer, and alternative mechanisms have been proposed. Overall, the uncertainty and lack of consistency throughout the trichloroethylene studies, whether they are in humans, in animals, or in tests in vitro, lead to the conclusion that it would be wholly inappropriate to classify trichloroethylene as a human carcinogen.  相似文献

Many studies comparing the effects of single- and multi-strain probiotics on pathogen inhibition compare treatments with different concentrations. They also do not examine the possibility of inhibition between probiotic strains with a mixture. We tested the ability of 14 single-species probiotics to inhibit each other using a cross-streak assay, and agar spot test. We then tested the ability of 15 single-species probiotics and 5 probiotic mixtures to inhibit Clostridium difficile, Escherichia coli and S. typhimurium, using the agar spot test. Testing was done with mixtures created in two ways: one group contained component species incubated together, the other group of mixtures was made using component species which had been incubated separately, equalised to equal optical density, and then mixed in equal volumes. Inhibition was observed for all combinations of probiotics, suggesting that when used as such there may be inhibition between probiotics, potentially reducing efficacy of the mixture. Significant inter-species variation was seen against each pathogen. When single species were tested against mixtures, the multi-species preparations displayed significantly (p < 0.05 or less) greater inhibition of pathogens in 12 out of 24 cases. Despite evidence that probiotic species will inhibit each other when incubated together in vitro, in many cases a probiotic mixture was more effective at inhibiting pathogens than its component species when tested at approximately equal concentrations of biomass. This suggests that using a probiotic mixture might be more effective at reducing gastrointestinal infections, and that creating a mixture using species with different effects against different pathogens may have a broader spectrum of action that a single provided by a single strain.  相似文献

It is already well-established that conduction in lipid bilayers containing alamethicin arises from the presence of complexes in which there are several molecules of the polypeptide. It is with the nature of these complexes that this paper is primarily concerned. While it is clear that increasing alamethicin concentration and increasing potential across the membrane favour their formation, the nature of the reactions involved has not yet been elucidated. Attempts have therefore been made to clarify the sequence of events leading to the establishment of a complex in its conducting state. It has been concluded that the most likely mechanism involves, initially, a non-field-dependent aggregation of the alamethicin, in the plane of the membrane, into non-conducting oligomers. These then appear to undergo movement normal to the membrane (which is field dependent) to form the conducting species. Temperature studies have shown that the various conducting states of the oligomer have effectively equal enthalpies, and that the activation energies for transitions between these states are all approx. 1.2 kcal/mol. The corresponding rate constants are very sensitive to the lipid composition of the membrane and a variety of different systems has been examined in order to clarify the origins of this effect. The only conclusion from this part of the work is that lipid fluidity might be involved.  相似文献

Multi-species Lotka-Volterra models exhibit greater instability with an increase in diversity and/or connectance. These model systems, however, lack the likely behavior that a predator will prey more heavily on some species if other prey species decline in relative abundance. We find that stability does not depend on diversity and/or connectance in multi-species Lotka-Volterra models with this 'predator switching'. This conclusion is more consistent with several empirical observations than the classic conclusion, suggesting that large complex ecosystems in nature may be more stable than previously supposed.  相似文献
