We investigated the occurrence and distribution of multi-annual cycles in abundance of mountain hare populations across a wide area of their range in northern Europe. We analysed 125 time-series of mountain hare abundance indexed from hunting bag records and questionnaire responses from Scotland, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland. We also reanalysed 17 previously published time-series based on hunting bag records and snow track indices from mountain hare populations in Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Italy. Autocorrelation analysis showed that 45% of mountain hare populations showed evidence of cycles, characterised by significant negative autocorrelations at half or the whole cycle period. The amplitude and periodicity of cycles varied between and within countries. Time-series in Scotland were characterised by high-amplitude weak cycles with a mean periodicity of nine years but with a range of 4–15 years. Norwegian and Swedish time-series revealed low amplitude weak cycles with a 3–7 year period. Finnish time-series showed low amplitude cycles with a 4–11 year period. Alpine time-series were predominantly non-cyclic, while the limited number of series from Russia showed high amplitude weak cycles with an 8–11 year period. The results reveal that mountain hare populations show a wide range of population dynamics with distinct regional differences in periodicity, amplitude and density dependent structure of cycles. These findings suggest that different factors may limit or regulate mountain hare populations in different regions of Europe thus supporting the results of recent field studies.  相似文献

Summary A plastic bag, used as a field assay chamber, assisted in the investigation of the acetylene reduction method as a technique to measure nitrogen-fixing activity in rice paddy fields. A study of the change in volume of the plastic bag and of the loss of acetylene and ethylene from the bag provided evidence that this plastic bag method was feasible in field assays. The field assay of rice at the grain ripening stage showed that the nitrogen-fixing activity increased linearly after a lag phase of 0 to 3 hours during a time-course experiment.Detachment of the aerial part of the rice plant from its root remaining in the field did not affect the nitrogen-fixing activity of the root.The markedly higher nitrogen-fixing activity in the planted areas of the field compared with the nonplanted areas between the plant rows indicated that the nitrogenase activity in the field is associated with the roots of the rice plant. re]19751204  相似文献

A cortisone derivative (Solumedrol, Upjohn) has been added to the saline used to fill inflatable breast prostheses. In the experimental laboratory this drug passed slowly through the silicone rubber bag into a surrounding solvent. Clinically, this use has been evaluated in 100 cases of augmentation mammaplasty, with no evidence of wound complications attributable to the steroid. The influence of significant capsule formation (or "hardness") was less than 5 percent in this series.  相似文献

Local protein synthesis in neuronal processes is a common phenomenon and may play an important role in synaptic plasticity and hormonal regulation. We have used neuroendocrine bag cells of Aplysia californica as a model system to study local protein synthesis. In our previous work we found that bag cell neurites are capable of synthesizing and processing the prohormone of egg-laying hormone (pro-ELH). In the present study, we found that bag cell neurites are also capable of releasing locally synthesized pro-ELH and ELH-related products via both constitutive and regulated pathways. However, an electrical afterdischarge did not enhance local pro-ELH synthesis, as it does in the bag cell soma. This is the first evidence that isolated neurites are capable of secreting locally synthesized proteins.  相似文献

  1. Many animals decorate their exterior with environmental materials, and these decorations are predicted to increase their survival. The adaptive significance of these decorations, however, has seldom been tested experimentally under field conditions.
  2. This study researched the anti-predatory functions of the decoration (bag) of a bagworm moth, Eumeta crameri, against their natural predator, Oecophylla smaragdina, the Asian weaver ant. The study experimentally tested if bag removal from caterpillars resulted in more predation than bagged caterpillars under field conditions, which would support the hypothesis that bags are selected to protect the caterpillars against their predators.
  3. In support of the prediction, this study showed that caterpillars without a bag were attacked, killed, and taken to ants' nests significantly more than bagged caterpillars. The study provides rare experimental evidence for the anti-predatory functions of the decoration under field conditions. This study suggests that decorating behaviour has evolved in animals as an anti-predatory defence mechanism.

Abstract. 1. Samples from two populations of the satyrid butterfly, Cercyonis pegala were collected and analysed for palatability and incidence of avian predation.
2. A series of feeding experiments indicated that C. pegala is indeed palatable.
3. A high proportion of individuals in both samples showed evidence of avian attack: 10.2% in Amherst and 7.1% in Easthampton; this frequency is much higher than usually described for studies of this sort.
4. The two samples showed no significant differences with respect to frequency of damaged specimens.

Cation and anion exchange resin bags were placed just under the humus layer at five adjacent forest sample sites with differing site quality classes in order to assess the available nutrient supply. For comparison, humus samples were collected from the same sites. Nutrients were extracted from humus samples by conventional extraction methods and by shaking together with ion exchange resin bags. Ca and Mg corresponded best to differences in site quality class, of all analysed ions in thein situ resin bag eluates. Thein situ resin bag adsorption of NH4−N, Na and Mn also showed a positive correlation with site quality. The adsorption of PO4−P was negatively correlated to site quality class. Inadequate amounts of exchange resin, or leaving resin bagsin situ for too long a time result in the replacement of already adsorbed ions by ions with higher ion exchange constants.  相似文献

The leaching of phthalate plasticizers from four types of blood platelet bags was investigated. The anticoagulant solutions used in the blood collection bags had pH values of 5.64 +/- .04 and contained no detectable amounts of phthalates. Platelet bag materials from each bag were soaked in normal salines for up to 5 days. The salines were tested for the leached phthalates from the bags but none could be found. However, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) leached out of the PL-146 and Terumo bags into bovine calf serum used for soaking the bag materials. There was an increase in the amount of DEHP leached from about 1.1 mg at the end of one day to about 3.3 mg per gm of bag material at the end of a five day extraction with the serum. In PL-732 sets, a platelet bag made of a specialty polyolefin, the amount of DEHP leached out was less than 0.02 mg per g of bag material. CLX bags, which contained tri-(2-ethylhexyl) trimelliate (TETM) as a plasticizer, showed a negligible amount of it leaching into the calf serum. Infra-red spectra showed that PL-146 bags had been coated with a layer of a fatty acid amide while the Terumo bags contained a layer of a silicone fluid on their inner surfaces. CLX bags showed a coating of stearates, which were probably soaps of calcium or zinc. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the inner surfaces of each brand of the bag were distinctly different morphologically. The two PVC bags were very similar whereas the surfaces morphology of PL-732 was rougher. Terumo bag had a different surface morphology than those of the other bags whereas the CLX bags had a very regular surface pattern. The exact significance of the surface morphology is not certain but excessively rough surfaces may not be desirable for the bags.  相似文献

Short term (1 h) extracorporeal circulation without or with irradiation of blood was performed in two normal dogs in a series of experiments. The granulocyte count was constantly diminished, while the lymphocytes did not show any particular change in their concentration. In the majority of the experiments a decrease of the CFU-C content occurred to less than 70% of the initial level. There was no difference in the results of experiments with or without irradiation. In the "bag to bag" procedures, no significant change in the blood leukocyte counts including CFU-C, was established.  相似文献

Egg laying in Aplysia involves a well-characterized series of behaviors that can last for several hours. The behaviors are controlled by two bilateral clusters of peptidergic neurons in the abdominal ganglion. Following brief stimulation, these neurons, which have been termed the bag cell neurons, undergo a sequence of changes in their excitability lasting many hours. The bag cell neurons have served as a model system for studying the molecular mechanisms involved in the synthesis, processing, and release of neuroactive peptides and in the regulation of prolonged changes in neuronal excitability.  相似文献

The abdominal ganglion of Aplysia provides a convenient experimental system for cellular studies on the roles of peptides as chemical messengers in the nervous system. There are indications that the bag cells, a group of neuroendocrine cells, synthesize and release egg laying hormone (ELH), a peptide with an apparent molecular weight of 6000. Our recent investigations indicate that a burst of impulse activity in the bag cells produces five types of long-lasting responses, some excitatory, others inhibitory, in 26 identified neurons and 2 identified cell clusters located near the bag cells in the abdominal ganglion. The responses have slow, smoothly graded onsets, and many of them result in modulation of neuronal activity for 3 hours or more. Physiological and ultrastructural data support the hypothesis that they are induced by a bag cell hormone (or hormones) that is released into vascular and interstitial spaces of the ganglion to act on the target neurons. Local application of purified ELH to one of the target neurons provides evidence that the bag cell effect is mediated by ELH. Many of the target neurons are known to be parts of neuronal circuits that control specific behavioral and homeostatic processes. Since egg laying is initiated by the bag cell discharge and is associated with a stereotyped behavior pattern lasting several hours, the actions of these peptide-secreting neurons on the central nervous system may serve to regulate certain elements of behavior and homeostasis during egg laying.  相似文献

Management of harvested species is of great importance in order to maintain a sustainable population. Genetics is, however, largely neglected in management plans. Here, we analysed the genetics of the bean goose (Anser fabalis) in order to aid conservation actions for the commonly hunted but declining subspecies, the taiga bean goose (A. f. fabalis). We used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and microsatellites to determine the subspecies composition of the Finnish bean goose harvest, as the hunting bag is thought to comprise two subspecies, the taiga bean goose and the tundra bean goose (A. f. rossicus). The latter subspecies has a more stable or even increasing population size. Other eastern subspecies (A. f. serrirostris, A. f. middendorffii) could additionally be part of the Finnish hunting bag. We estimated genetic diversity, genetic structure and sex-biased gene flow of the different subspecies. Most of the harvested bean geese belonged to the taiga bean goose, whereas most of the tundra bean goose harvest was found to be geographically restricted to south-eastern Finland. The mtDNA data supported strong genetic structure, while microsatellites showed much weaker structuring. This is probably due to the extreme female philopatry of the species. The taiga bean goose had lowered genetic diversity compared to other subspecies, warranting management actions. We also detected A. f. serrirostris mtDNA haplotypes and evidence of interspecific hybridization with two other Anser species.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to assess the development, quality and gene expression profile of oxidative stress-related genes of bovine embryos cultured in different culture systems with low oxygen tension (5% CO2, 5% O2 and 90% N2). The systems assessed included: (1) an incubator chamber; (2) a plastic bag; and (3) a foil bag. The choice of culture system had no effect on cleavage rate at 72 h. However, significant differences (P < 0.01) were observed in the rate of blastocysts registered at day 7 (29.8, 20.2 and 12.7% for incubator chamber, plastic bag and foil bag, respectively). Total number of cells did not differ between systems, although the proportion of ICM:total cells was affected particularly in the plastic bag (19.5%), compared with the incubator chamber (31.4%). In addition, significant differences were found in the apoptotic:total cell ratio (3.3, 6.5 and 8.8% for the incubator chamber, plastic bag and foil bag, respectively), with apoptotic nuclei localised mainly in the ICM compartment of the embryo. The amount of reactive oxygen species was also different between culture systems and this effect was correlated with a higher expression of SOD2, GSS and GPX1 genes in embryos cultured in the gassed bags as compared with embryos cultured in the incubator chamber. In conclusion, these results give evidence that, under low oxygen tension, the incubator chamber is more efficient and generates higher number of, and better quality, embryos than gassed bag systems evaluated here and this effect was probably due to an increased level of reactive oxygen species in the gassed bags, which upregulates the expression of some antioxidant enzymes to compensate for hyperoxia conditions.  相似文献

In the present study we have investigated the reactivity of rat muscle to a specific monoclonal antibody directed against alpha cardiac myosin heavy chain. Serial cross sections of rat hindlimb muscles from the 17th day in utero to adulthood, and after neonatal denervation and de-efferentation, were studied by light microscope immunohistochemistry. Staining with anti-alpha myosin heavy chain was restricted to intrafusal bag fibres in all specimens studied. Nuclear bag2 fibres were moderately to strongly stained in the intracapsular portion and gradually lost their reactivity towards the ends, whereas nuclear bag1 fibres were stained for a short distance in each pole. Nuclear bag2 fibres displayed reactivity to anti-alpha myosin heavy chain from the 21st day of gestation, whereas nuclear bag1 fibres only acquired reactivity to anti-alpha myosin heavy chain three days after birth. After neonatal de-efferentation, the reactivity of nuclear bag2 fibres to anti-alpha myosin heavy chain was decreased and limited to a shorter portion of the fibre, whereas nuclear bag1 fibres were unreactive. We showed that a myosin heavy chain isoform hitherto unknown for skeletal muscle is specifically expressed in rat nuclear bag fibres. These findings add further complexity to the intricate pattern of isomyosin expression in intrafusal fibres. Furthermore, we show that motor innervation influences the expression of this isomyosin along the length of the fibres.  相似文献

Pediatric ophthalmologists increasingly recognize that the ideal site for intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is in the bag for aphakic eyes, but it is always very difficult via conventional technique. We conducted a prospective case series study to investigate the success rate and clinical outcomes of capsular bag reestablishment and in-the-bag IOL implantation via secondary capsulorhexis with radiofrequency diathermy (RFD) in pediatric aphakic eyes, in which twenty-two consecutive aphakic pediatric patients (43 aphakic eyes) enrolled in the Childhood Cataract Program of the Chinese Ministry of Health were included. The included children underwent either our novel technique for secondary IOL implantation (with RFD) or the conventional technique (with a bent needle or forceps), depending on the type of preoperative proliferative capsular bag present. In total, secondary capsulorhexis with RFD was successfully applied in 32 eyes (32/43, 74.4%, age 5.6±2.3 years), of which capsular bag reestablishment and in-the-bag IOL implantation were both achieved in 30 eyes (30/43, 70.0%), but in the remaining 2 eyes (2/32, 6.2%) the IOLs were implanted in the sulcus with a capsular bag that was too small. Secondary capsulorhexis with conventional technique was applied in the other 11 eyes (11/43, 25.6%, age 6.9±2.3 years), of which capsular bag reestablishment and in-the-bag IOL implantation were both achieved only in 3 eyes(3/43, 7.0%), and the IOLs were implanted in the sulcus in the remaining 8 eyes. A doughnut-like proliferative capsular bag with an extensive Soemmering ring (32/43, 74.4%) was the main success factor for secondary capsulorhexis with RFD, and a sufficient capsular bag size (33/43, 76.7%) was an additional factor in successful in-the-bag IOL implantation. In conclusion, RFD secondary capsulorhexis technique has 70% success rate in the capsular bag reestablishment and in-the-bag IOL implantation in pediatric aphakic eyes, particularly effective in cases with a doughnut-like, extensively proliferative Soemmering ring.  相似文献

Muscle spindle density is extremely high in the deep muscles of the human neck. However, there is a paucity of information regarding the morphology and immunoreactivity of these muscle spindles. The objective of this study was to investigate the intrafusal fiber content and to assess the myosin heavy chain (MyHC) composition of muscle spindles from human deep neck muscles. In addition to the conventional spindles containing bag(1), bag(2), and chain fibers (b(1)b(2)c spindle), we observed a number of spindles lacking bag(1) (b(2)c spindle) or bag(2) (b(1)c spindle) fibers. Both bag(1) and bag(2) fibers contained slow tonic MyHCs along their entire fiber length and MyHCI, MyHCIIa, embryonic, and alpha-cardiac MyHC isoforms along a variable length of the fibers. Fetal MyHC was present in bag(2) fibers but not in bag(1) fibers. Nuclear chain fibers contained MyHCIIa, embryonic, and fetal isoforms with regional variations. We also compared the present data with our previous results obtained from muscle spindles in human biceps brachii and the first lumbrical muscles. The allotment of numbers of intrafusal fibers and the MyHC composition showed some muscle-related differences, suggesting functional specialization in the control of movement among different human muscles.  相似文献

Earlier work showed that cell bodies and neurites of the peptidergic bag cell neurons of Aplysia californica contain mRNA for egg-laying hormone. The purpose of the present study was to determine if egg-laying hormone synthesis and prohormone processing is similar in the pleurovisceral connective nerves (containing neurites of bag cell neurons) and the bag cell neuron clusters (containing both cell bodies and neurites of bag cell neurons). Initial experiments confirmed by RT-PCR and sequencing that egg-laying hormone mRNA was present in the pleurovisceral connective nerves. To investigate possible regional differences in translation of mRNA and prohormone processing, clusters were separated from connective nerves and newly synthesized egg-laying hormone-immunoreactive proteins were analyzed. Results showed that synthesis and processing of prohormone occurred in both the clusters and isolated connective nerves; however, the relative abundance of prohormone, processing intermediates, and egg-laying hormone was different. Pulse-chase experiments showed that prohormone was processed more slowly in the connective nerves than in the clusters. These results show that mRNA in isolated neural processes of neuroendocrine cells can be translated, and that the cellular machinery for protein synthesis is present, but processing of the ELH prohormone is significantly compromised.  相似文献

(C57BL x CBA)F1 hybrid female mice were mated with hemizygous Rb(X.2)2Ad males to distinguish the paternal X chromosome. Homozygous tetraploids were produced by blastomere fusion at the 2-cell stage, and 161 of these were transferred to recipients and analysed on the 10th day of gestation. 59 implants contained resorptions and 76 contained either an embryo and/or extraembryonic membranes. 38 (20, XXXX and 18, XXYY) were analysed to investigate their X-inactivation pattern. Embryonic and yolk sac endodermally- and mesodermally-derived samples were analysed by G-banding and by Kanda analysis. In the XX and XY controls, the predicted pattern of X-inactivation was observed, though 12.2% of metaphases in the XX series displayed no X-inactivation. In the XY series the Y chromosome was seen in a high proportion of metaphases. In the XXXX tetraploids, 8 cell lineages were recognized with regard to their X-inactivation pattern, though most belonged to the following 3 categories: (XmXm)XpXp, Xm(XmXp)Xp and XmXm(XpXp). The other categories were only rarely encountered. In the embryonic and mesodermally-derived tissue the ratio of these groups was close to 1:2:1, whereas in the endodermally-derived tissue it was 1:4.11:4.88, due to preferential paternal X-inactivation. A significant but small proportion of all 3 tissues analysed displayed no evidence of X-inactivation. Indirect evidence suggests that this represents a genuine group because of the high efficiency of the Kanda staining. The presence of the Xm(XmXp)Xp category is consistent with the expectation that X-inactivation occurs randomly in 2 of the 4 X chromosomes present. The presence of small numbers of preparations with no evidence of X-inactivation and other unexpected categories suggests that these are probably selected against during development.  相似文献

根据分支系统学的原理和方法, 对禾本科鹅观草属进行了系统发育分析。鹅观草属传统分类上的18 个系被确定为终端类群, 来自形态学、解剖学、细胞学和孢粉学的23 个性状被选作建立矩阵的依据;雀麦族中的短柄草属作为外类群被用于外部性状的极性识别, 过去分析过的性状资料被用于微观特征的极性判断;采用PAUP 程序对矩阵进行运算, 共获得6 个同等简约的谱系分支图, 其中具最低f-比值的图被选作分支分析的基础。结果表明, 分支图上显示的组、系划分与传统分类的基本一致, 各类群间的演化关系与过去凭借单一证据所作的零散推断也基本吻合。所不同的是半颖组各支类群不是共祖起源, 可能具有复杂的内部组成;在个别系间, 分支图展现的类群位置与宏观分析的存在差异。  相似文献
