1.  The neural mechanisms responsible for flashing in the firefly,L. lusitanica, were investigated by means of localized electrolytic lesions and electrical stimulations.
2.  Restricted lesions of the median protocerebral neuropile produced the irreversible abolition of spontaneous flashing and of the associated photogenic volleys. Single electric shocks applied to the same structure were followed by a propagated action potential in the lanternal nerves; a short (40 ms) train of stimuli at 200/s evoked a fully developed photogenic volley and the related flash, both of which were identical in all respects to the spontaneous ones (Figs. 2, 3).
3.  Separation of the protocerebrum from the optic lobes led to the disappearence of rhythmic flashing, which was replaced by a continuous, dull luminescence; at the same time the photogenic volleys of the lanternal nerves were replaced by a continuous, asynchronous discharge at low frequency (Fig. 15).
4.  Ablation of theretina-lamina ganglionaris complex was followed by a marked increase of flashing frequency. Electrical stimulation of theretina at low repetition rate (5/s) was followed by depression of both frequency and intensity of spontaneous flashing; opposite effects (i.e. increase in flashing frequency and intensity) were obtained by high rate (30/s) retinal stimulation (Figs. 6–9).
5.  Electrolytic lesions of the medulla performed after ablation of theretina-lamina complex, did not produce any change in the patterns of spontaneous flashing. Electrical stimulation of the medulla produced facilitatory effects on flashing at all repetition rates used, with the lowest threshold at 30/s. This effect disappeared after localized electrolytic lesion (Figs. 12–14).
6.  These findings are discussed and it is concluded that (a) the photomotor neurons of the firefly's brain are located in the deep protocerebral neuropile; (b) their rhythmic activity is the result of the interaction with an oscillator located in the optic lobes, possibly in the lobula; (c) the retina-lamina complex exerts a tonic inhibitory influence on flashing; (d) a phasic facilitatory influence is exerted by neural structures located at the level of the medulla.

Certain species of fireflies show a group behavior of synchronous flashing. Their synchronized and rhythmic flashing has received much attention among many researchers, and there has been a study of biological models for their entrainment of flashing. The synchronous behavior of fireflies resembles the firing synchrony of integrate-and-fire neurons with excitatory or inhibitory connections. This paper shows an analysis of spiking neurons specialized for a firefly flashing model, and provides simulation results of multiple neurons with various transmission delays and coupling strengths. It also explains flashing patterns of some firefly species and examines the synchrony conditions depending on transmission delays and coupling strengths.  相似文献

Summary One foreleg was amputated at mid-femur in adultGryllus bimaculatus females. In phonotaxis tests these monaural crickets show course deviations and circling towards the intact side (Fig. 1). Mean course stability is best at 60 and 70 dB (Fig. 2). Here it differs significantly from a threshold value for orientated walking in females operated on the day of adult moult, but not in those operated two weeks later. The orientational performance improves with the interval between amputation and test (Fig. 3).Centripetal cobalt backfills reveal degeneration of tympanal nerve fibers on the amputated side (Fig. 4B, C). The mean number of intact afferents crossing the midline of the prothoracic ganglion is increased in monaural versus binaural crickets. Maximum transmidline extension is not correlated with the period of deafferentation (Fig. 5).Intracellular recording and staining of prothoracic auditory interneurons shows some axonal sprouts in ON1i (intact side) and ON2, but no significant physiological changes (Figs. 6A, D; 8A, C, E, G). Apart from axonal sprouts ON1a (amputated side) may show a few dendritic sprouts into the intact auditory neuropil (Figs. 6C, 7). Excitation in some ON1a-cells reveals functional contacts to intact auditory afferents (via crossing dendrites or possibly crossing afferents, Figs. 6e, 7, 8F). Morphological and associated physiological changes start early in AN2a (amputated side). The degree of crossing dendrites and contralateral excitation increases with postoperative age (Figs. 8H, 9).  相似文献

Summary The response dynamics of cercal afferents in the cockroach, Periplaneta americana, were determined by means of a cross-correlation technique using a Gaussian white noise modulation of wind as a stimulus. The white noise stimulus could evoke sustained firing activity in most of the afferents examined (Fig. 1). The spike discharges were unitized and then cross-correlated with the stimulus to compute 1st- and 2nd-order Weiner kernels. The Ist-order kernels from a total of 28 afferents were biphasic and closely matched the time differential of a pulse (Figs. 1, 3 and 4). The amplitude and waveform of the kernels depended on the stimulus angle in such a way that the kernels were the mirror image of those on the polar opposite side (Figs. 2 and 3). The 2nd-order kernels were also differential. They had 2 diagonal peaks and 2 off-diagonal valleys in a 2-dimensional plot with 2 time axes (Figs. 1, 5 and 6). This 4-eye configuration was basically invariant irrespective of the stimulus angle, although the kernels varied in amplitude when the stimulus angle was changed. The time between the peak and a following trough of the 1st-order kernel was constant and had a mean of 4.6±0.1 ms, whereas the time between 2 diagonal peaks of the 2nd-order kernels was 4.7±0.1 ms (Figs. 4 and 6), suggesting that wind receptors (filiform sensilla) on cerci act as a band-pass filter with a peak frequency of about 106 Hz. The peak time, however, varies from 2.3 to 6.9 ms in both kernels, which may reflect the spatial distribution of the corresponding hairs on the cercus. The summation of the 1st- (linear) and 2nd-order (nonlinear) models precisely predicted the timing of the spike firing (Fig. 8). Thus, these 2 lower-order kernels can totally characterize the response dynamics of the wind receptors. The nonlinear response explains the directional sensitivity of the sensory neurons, while the differentiating 1st-order kernel explains the velocity sensitivity of the neurons. The nonlinearity is a signal compression in which one of the diagonal peaks of the 2nd-order kernel always offsets the downward phase of the 1st-order kernel (Fig. 7) and obviously represents a half-wave rectification property of the wind receptors that are excited by hair movement in only one direction and inhibited by hair movement in the polar opposite direction.  相似文献

外源一氧化氮(nitric oxide,NO)供体硝普钠(sodium nitroprusside,SNP)和过氧化氢(hydrogen peroxide,H2O2)处理抑制小麦(Triticu aestivum L.)叶片顺乌头酸酶活性,抑制呈明显的浓度及时间效应;同时外源NO衍生代谢物过氧亚硝酸阴离子(peroxynitrite,ONOO^-)的供体3-morpholinosydnonimine hydrochlloride(SIN-1)和水杨酸(salicylic acid,SA)对酶活性也具有抑制作用,而且小麦叶片线粒体顺乌头酸酶对H2O2和SIN-1更敏感。分别以SNP与过氧化氢酶(catalase,CAT)专一性抑制剂氨基三唑(3-amino-1,2,4-triazole,3-AT)处理离体小麦叶片,发现在其内源H2O2含量上升的同时,顺乌头酸酶活性均呈浓度与时间依赖性下降趋势。表明NO除直接抑制顺乌头酸酶活性外,还可能经H2O2介导间接对顺乌头酸酶产生抑制作用。  相似文献

1. ERG S(lambda) were determined in dark-adapted intact preparations of 6 North American firefly species (Photinus collustrans, marginellus, pyralis, macdermotti, scintillans and Bicellonycha wickershamorum) which restrict their flashing activity to twilight hours. The curves possess narrow (1/2 bandwidth = 50-60 nm) peaks in the yellow (560-580 nm) and a shoulder in the violet (370-420 nm), with a marked attenuation (1.4-2.2 log units) of sensitivity in the green (480-530 nm) region of the spectrum (Fig. 1). Two additional species (Photuris potomaca and frontalis) which initiate flashing at twilight and continue on late into the night (twi-night) possess broad sensitivity maxima around 560 nm (Fig. 3). 2. Selective adaptation experiments isolated near-UV and yellow in P. scintillans (Fig. 2). In the dorsal frontal region of the compound eyes in P. frontalis, high sensitivity existed only in the short wavelength region (near-UV and blue) with a maximum in the blue (lambda max 435 nm) (Fig. 4). 3. The in situ MSP absorption spectrum of the screening pigments was determined in preparations of firefly retina. a) Two kinds of dark brown granules were found in the clear zone region. These granules absorb all across the spectrum with a gradual increase in optical density in the shorter wavelength region in P. pyralis (Fig. 5). b) Besides dark granules, pink-to-red colored screening pigments were present in the vicinity of the rhabdoms. The absorption spectra of these pigments determined in five species were narrow (1/2 bandwidth = 50-80 nm) with species-specific differences in their peak absorption in the green at 525 nm, 510 nm, 512 nm and 517 nm in P. scintillans, macdermotti, collustrans and pyralis, respectively (Fig. 6). A similar pigment was found in P. marginellus with a lambda max at 512 nm (Fig. 7). In all cases, transmission increased both at long and short wavelengths, but more sharply in the long wavelength region (Figs. 6 and 7). Hence each twilight-restricted species has its own unique colored screening pigment. A yellow pigment whose absorption spectrum differed from those found in genus Photinus was found in twi-night active Photuris potomaca (lambda max 461 nm) and night-active P. versicolor (lambda max 456 nm). Human expeditions to Mars will require adaptation to the 24.65-h Martian solar day-night cycle (sol), which is outside the range of entrainment of the human circadian pacemaker under lighting intensities to which astronauts are typically exposed. Failure to entrain the circadian time-keeping system to the desired rest-activity cycle disturbs sleep and impairs cognitive function. Furthermore, differences between the intrinsic circadian period and Earth's 24-h light-dark cycle underlie human circadian rhythm sleep disorders, such as advanced sleep phase disorder and non-24-hour sleep-wake disorders. Therefore, first, we tested whether exposure to a model-based lighting regimen would entrain the human circadian pacemaker at a normal phase angle to the 24.65-h Martian sol and to the 23.5-h day length often required of astronauts during short duration space exploration. Second, we tested here whether such prior entrainment to non-24-h light-dark cycles would lead to subsequent modification of the intrinsic period of the human circadian timing system. Here we show that exposure to moderately bright light ( approximately 450 lux; approximately 1.2 W/m(2)) for the second or first half of the scheduled wake episode is effective for entraining individuals to the 24.65-h Martian sol and a 23.5-h day length, respectively. Estimations of the circadian periods of plasma melatonin, plasma cortisol, and core body temperature rhythms collected under forced desynchrony protocols revealed that the intrinsic circadian period of the human circadian pacemaker was significantly longer following entrainment to the Martian sol as compared to following entrainment to the 23.5-h day. The latter finding of after-effects of entrainment reveals for the first time plasticity of the period of the human circadian timing system. Both findings have important implications for the treatment of circadian rhythm sleep disorders and human space exploration.  相似文献

Male grasshoppers of the species Chorthippus biguttulus react to female songs with a characteristic turn towards the female. The probability of turning towards female song models was used to evaluate those parameters which are essential for a signal to be interpreted as female song.
  1. The shape of sound pulses turned out to be most decisive; pulses with ramps rising gradually over 3 and more ms were efficient (Figs. 2, 3), whereas rectangularly modulated pulses evoked only weak responses and only when pulse intervals were between 3 and 5 ms (Fig. 2). The decline of a pulse did not influence its efficiency (Fig. 3). In particular, pulses with sudden onsets and gradual declines were as weakly effective as rectangularly modulated ones and thus remarkably less effective than pulses with ramp-like onsets (Fig. 4).
  2. Intensity tuning curves suggest, that the absolute steepness of ramps (expressed as μbar/ms) is detected by the grasshopper nervous system (Figs. 6, 7), possibly by processing the delay in excitation onset of at least two receptor types differing in threshold sensitivity.
  3. The sawtooth shape of pulses in female signals is suggested to be adaptive with respect to directional hearing.

采用示踪技术探索了3H-JA的运输和分配规律及其受伤害胁迫的影响.外源3H-JA能够在小麦幼苗体内向上和向下运输,局部灼伤其运输与分配都发生了改变.从小麦根系饲喂的3H-JA,在植株内的分布量依序为根>茎>叶,时间较长(4h)时分配于心叶的3H-JA大大增加.当叶片受到局部灼伤时3H-JA向地上部的输出量减少;但局部灼伤可加快由心叶饲喂的3H-JA的向下运输,改变3H-JA在小麦幼苗各部位的分配比率.心叶饲喂短时间(5min)时,3H-JA主要积累在受到伤胁迫的展开叶(第2叶)中.向展开叶(第2叶)饲喂的3H-JA向下运输的速率高于向上运输的速率.推测JA运输及分配的变化可能在植株的防御反应中起重要作用.  相似文献

用0.5ppm表油菜素内酯处理绿豆幼苗,显著促进上胚轴伸长生长,若切除真叶则可抑制表油菜素内酯诱导的效应。三碘苯甲酸(TIBA)也可抑制表油菜素内酯促进的伸长生长。外源IAA能部分恢复TIBA的抑制效应。经处理的上胚轴内源IAA含量明显高于对照。暗示表油菜素内酯可能通过对内源IAA的调节来促进绿豆上胚轴的伸长生长。 表油菜素内酯处理的绿豆上胚轴组织中,与生长素降解密切相关的IAA氧化酶以及过氧化物酶活性均明显低于对照。  相似文献

The periodic light-dark cycle is the dominant environmental synchronizer used by humans to entrain to the geophysical 24-h day. Entrainment is a fundamental property of circadian systems by which the period of the internal clock (tau) is synchronized to the period of the entraining stimuli (T cycle). An important aspect of entrainment in humans is the maintenance of an appropriate phase relationship between the circadian system, the timing of sleep and wakefulness, and environmental time (a.k.a. the phase angle of entrainment) to maintain wakefulness throughout the day and consolidated sleep at night. In this article, we review these concepts and the methods for assessing circadian phase and period in humans, as well as discuss findings on the phase angle of entrainment in healthy adults. We review findings from studies that examine how the phase, intensity, duration, and spectral characteristics of light affect the response of the human biological clock and discuss studies on entrainment in humans, including recent studies of the minimum light intensity required for entrainment. We briefly review conditions and disorders in which failure of entrainment occurs. We provide an integrated perspective on circadian entrainment in humans with respect to recent advances in our knowledge of circadian period and of the effects of light on the biological clock in humans.  相似文献

Summary During production of song patterns by the semi-isolated CNS of Gryllus campestris, intracellullar recordings were made in fibers of the mesothoracic ganglion, including synaptic areas of identified wing opener and closer motor neurons. The normal calling song pattern and some transitional songs toward courtship and toward aggression were generated by the CNS in the absence of any phasic sensory timing (Figs. 1, 4). Intracellular activity of the opener motor neurons was characterized by an absence of events in the interchirp interval, an EPSP underlying each burst, and an IPSP following the burst if the closer motor neurons were to be activated (Fig. 1). Intracellular activity of the closer motor neurons was characterized by an absence of events in the interchirp interval, an IPSP immediately following the onset of the opener motor neuron burst, and an EPSP after the IPSP (Figs. 2, 3). Units were found which fired in a burst during the period when both the opener and closer motor neurons were inhibited (Fig. 5). Complementary sets of units were found which displayed an oscillation of activity at the chirp rhythm but not at the pulse rhythm (Fig. 6). Gaps in the calling song were observed whose characteristics indicated that motor neuron activity was neither required for, nor effective in, resetting the chirp timing oscillator (Fig. 8). Plants are acutely sensitive of their light environment, adapting their growth habit and prioritizing developmental decisions to maximize fecundity. In addition to providing an energy source and directional information, light quality also contributes to entrainment of the circadian system, an endogenous timing mechanism that integrates endogenous and environmental signalling cues to promote growth. Whereas plants' perception of red and blue portions of the spectrum are well defined, green light sensitivity remains enigmatic. In this study, we show that low fluence rates of green light are sufficient to entrain and maintain circadian rhythms in Arabidopsis and that cryptochromes contribute to this response. Importantly, green light responses are distinguishable from low blue light-induced phenotypes. These data suggest a distinct signalling mechanism enables entrainment of the circadian system in green light-enriched environments, such as those found in undergrowth and in densely planted monoculture.  相似文献

单独采用一氧化氮(nitric oxide,NO)供体硝普钠(sodiumnitroprusside,SNP)、葡萄糖和果糖浸种均不同程度地提高盐胁迫下水稻种子早期发芽率和发芽指数,SNP预处理可以不同程度地提高果糖和葡萄糖的含量;进一步采用葡萄糖和果糖分别与SNP混合后浸种,发现葡萄糖与SNP处理对盐胁迫下水稻种子的萌发有正协同效应,而果糖和SNP的组合处理对盐胁迫下水稻种子的萌发可能受到SNP一定程度的负调控.此外,SNP对盐胁迫下幼苗生长的促进效应可以被葡萄糖和果糖处理所加强,其中葡萄糖的效应更明显.  相似文献

The medicinal leech crawls along a solid substrate by repeated alternating extensions and shortenings of the body. Extension occurs with the posterior sucker attached and the head sucker free. The head sucker then attaches, followed by shortening and release of the tail sucker. The tail sucker is then pulled toward the head, where it reattaches to the substrate. The head sucker then releases, and another crawling cycle begins (Figs. 1, 5). There are two crawling variants: inchworm crawling, in which the head and tail suckers are closely apposed at the end of a cycle and the body forms a loop above the substrate, and vermiform crawling, in which the suckers are placed farther apart and the body remains fairly close to the substrate (Fig. 1). The cycle period and the distance traveled during a cycle are greater in inchworm than in vermiform crawling; however, the velocity of travel is the same for both (Fig. 2). For both variants, the interval between head sucker attachment and tail sucker release is similar at all cycle periods and has a value consistent with direct interneuronal conduction of a signal from head sucker sensory neurons to tail sucker motor neurons. The interval between tail sucker attachment and head sucker release, however, is longer and varies with the cycle period, suggesting a more complex interneuronal circuit in the pathway from tail sucker sensory neurons to head sucker motor neurons (Fig. 4). The onsets of the components of the crawling cycle (extension, post-extension pause, shortening, and post-shortening pause) show an anteroposterior lag (Figs. 5, 7). For both variants, the travel time between segments varies directly with the period (Fig. 8). For both crawl types, the durations of the cycle components vary directly with the period, with several exceptions (Figs. 9, 10). A model is presented that summarizes the coordination of the various motor events in a cycle of leech crawling (Figs. 11 and 12).  相似文献
