Most geckos are nocturnal forms and possess rod retinas, but some diurnal genera have pure-cone retinas. We isolated cDNAs encoding the diurnal gecko opsins, dg1 and dg2, similar to nocturnal gecko P521 and P467, respectively. Despite the large morphological differences between the diurnal and nocturnal gecko photoreceptor types, they express phylogenetically closely related opsins. These results provide molecular evidence for the reverse transmutation, that is, rods of an ancestral nocturnal gecko have backed into cones of diurnal geckos. The amino acid substitution rates of dgl and dg2 are higher than those of P521 and P467, respectively. Changes of behavior regarding photic environment may have contributed to acceleration of amino acid substitutions in the diurnal gecko opsins.  相似文献

We compared a number of techniques to measure water column autotroph production in a shallow, hypereutrophic wetland: diurnal oxygen changes; light and dark bottle incubations; chlorophyll a concentrations; daily changes in pH; and algal volume. Productivity from diurnal oxygen changes calculated at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 h intervals give similar estimates, but not 12 h intervals (dawn-dusk-dawn). Net productivity in bottles was slightly lower than that indicated by diurnal oxygen changes, and gross productivity in bottles was much lower than diurnal changes. Changes in pH correlated well with gross and net productivity measurements, as well as algal volume. Chlorophyll a is correlated with diurnal and bottle net productivity measurements and pH changes, but not algal volume. Since daily pH flux and oxygen changes provide a better overall assessment of ecosystem processes than standing crop or bottle incubations, they could be useful measurements for ecological engineers interested in assessing the ecosystem function.  相似文献

Changes in the concentration of adrenocorticotrophin and corticosteroid in the plasma of pregnant and foetal sheep have been followed at different times of day. Wide fluctuations were seen in the concentrations of both in the foetus and ewe, although no evidence for a diurnal rhythm in the ewe was obtained. The foetal plasma adrenocorticotrophin was higher at 07.00-11.00 h than at 21.00-01.00 h, but no corticosteroid rhythm was observed. A consistently close relationship between maternal and foetal hormone concentrations was not observed. The diurnal rhythm in adrenocorticotrophin concentration in the foetus is discussed in relation to rhythms in indicators of central nervous activity.  相似文献

Most animals have well established diel activity patterns (e.g., diurnal, crepuscular, or nocturnal), and changes in behavior from diurnal to nocturnal are rare in single species. We radio tracked 50 keelback snakes in a single population, locating them up to four times a day, over five periods of the year in the Australian dry tropics to describe temporal variation in diel movement patterns. Snake body temperatures were also recorded to determine the relationship between activity patterns and body temperatures. Season influenced diel activity patterns significantly. Keelbacks were more likely to move, and moved further in the daytime in the mid‐dry (June–July), and late dry (Aug–Sep) seasons. In the mid‐dry season, 87 percent of movements were diurnal, whereas in the mid‐wet (Feb–March) season, although snakes were much more likely to move, only 43 percent of movements were diurnal. In the late dry season, snakes were slightly more likely to move at night than at any other time of day, and so at this time of the year, snakes could be classified as nocturnal. Thus, overall increased movements in the mid‐wet season (austral summer) were associated with more crepuscular and nocturnal movement. There was a significant relationship between individual snake body temperatures and movement rates in all seasons. Changes in movement patterns may be related to body temperature, and this diurnal species becomes cathemeral in the tropics in summer, when it is possible to maintain high body temperatures both day and night.  相似文献

Branched-chain 2-oxo acid dehydrogenase (BCODH) kinase is responsible for inactivation of BCODH complex by phosphorylation of the complex. Activity of the kinase towards its substrate, the E1 component of the BCODH complex, is known dependent upon binding of the kinase to the E2 component. The possible existence as well as importance of unbound mitochondrial BCODH kinase has been largely ignored in previous studies. Evidence is presented here for the existence of free and bound BCODH kinase in the matrix space of rat liver mitochondria. Furthermore, in female rats, in which diurnal variations in liver BCODH complex and kinase activities occur, the amount of the kinase bound to the complex changes between morning and evening without a change in total kinase protein. Activity of the kinase correlates with the amount of bound rather than total kinase protein, suggesting only the bound form is active. Changes in amount of kinase bound and therefore active appear responsible for diurnal variation in BCODH complex activity in the female rat. We propose that change in the amount of bound BCODH kinase is a key feature of a novel regulatory mechanism for determining the activity state of the BCODH complex.  相似文献

The amount of free glucose and sucrose within the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana has been evaluated under different photoperiods and related to steviol glycoside (SVgly) accumulation. The diurnal dynamics of glucose and sucrose in leaves, internodes, apices, and roots revealed considerable fluctuations. Within leaves, glucose and sucrose content decreased up to three-fold during the night whereas SVgly amounts did not show any significant diurnal fluctuations. Ontogenetic variations in glucose content was markedly different under long-day (LD) and short-day (SD) regimes. Under LD, glucose content increased two-fold after the onset of flower bud formation, whereas under SD, a stagnation or small decrease was observed. This increase under LD was already noticed in the upper sink leaves at the end of the vegetative stage, possibly acting as a metabolic trigger for the phase transition to reproductive development. Under SD, glucose content appeared more controlled resulting in a better linear relationship with dry matter and SVgly content. The increased sink demands of the transitional apex led to a rapid decline in leaf sucrose which showed little or no correlation with SVgly amounts. From our results, it becomes clear that the correlation between glucose or sucrose as substrates and SVglys as products is very dynamic and is significantly influenced by day-length and ontogeny.  相似文献

In the rat small bowel mucosa significant variation was found in both the labelling and the mitotic indices with time of day. The zenith and the nadir of labelling and mitotic activity coincided at 15.00 and 02.00 hours respectively. Small changes were found in the ‘cut-off’ position, but this variation in proliferative compartment size was insufficient to account for the comparatively wider fluctuations in proliferative indices. Measurements of the rate of entry into mitosis, using metaphase arrest with vincristine at three widely separated times during the day, showed no significant change. Changes in the growth fraction or in the birth rate as measured cannot account for diurnal variation in the proliferative activity of the small bowel mucosa. We propose a hypothesis which involves diurnal fluctuations in the transit times through G1 and through G2.  相似文献

The dynamic relationship between the rates of water loss and uptake controls plant water status. Marked diurnal variations in water potential of both leaves and fruit occurred in all plants studied. Variations in water status during the day were most clearly related to changes in evaporative demand of the air and were different for the east and west sides of a tree. At night, the plant water potential reflected the soil moisture status.

Changes in the water potential of pear fruit were correlated with changes in fruit diameter. Since water loss from fruit occurred mostly through the pedicel into the xylem of the tree, the fruit could be used as a crude gauge of xylem water potential, which also showed dramatic changes during the day.

Differential carbohydrate media and anaerobic replica plating techniques were used to assess the degrees of diurnal variations in the direct and viable cell counts as well as the carbohydrate-specific subgroups within the mixed rumen bacterial populations in cattle fed maintenance (metabolizable energy) levels of either a high-forage or a high-concentrate diet once daily. The rumen was sampled at 1 h before feeding and 2, 4, 8, 12, and 16 h after feeding, and selected microbiological parameters of the isolated bacterial populations were assessed. Corresponding samples of ruminal fluid were assayed for fermentation acids, carbohydrate, ammonia, and pH changes. The data showed that regardless of diet, total bacterial numbers remained fairly constant throughout the day. The number of viable bacteria declined 40 to 60% after feeding and then increased to a maximum at 16 h postfeeding. Changes occurred in the carbohydrate-specific subgroups within the bacterial populations, and some of the changes were consistent with a predicted scheme of ruminal feedstuff carbohydrate fermentation. Regardless of diet, however, soluble-carbohydrate-utilizing bacteria predominated at all times. Xylan-xylose and pectin subgroups respectively comprised about one-half and one-third of the population when the high-forage diet was given. These subgroups, along with the cellulolytics, constituted lesser proportions of the population when the high-concentrate diet was given. The cellulolytic subgroup was the least numerous of all subgroups regardless of diet but followed a diurnal pattern similar to that predicted for cellulose fermentation. There were few diurnal variations or differences in bacterial cell compositions and ruminal fluid parameters between diets. The observed similarities and dissimilarities of the rumen bacterial populations obtained when the two diets were given are discussed. The data are consistent with the versatility and constancy of the rumen as a stable, mature microbial system under the specific low-level feeding regimens used.  相似文献

For 24 hrs. after i.v. injection of 1 ml of an undiluted immune serum raised against oCRF41, the diurnal surge of plasma ACTH dropped to a short-lived limited rise above baseline level. On the second day after injection, the ACTH level in treated rats rose to a subnormal level, although both plasma dilution of the immune serum and its binding capacity in the plasma remained unchanged throughout the experiment. Plasma corticosterone, on the contrary, displayed a normal circadian rhythm during the entire experiment. However, in animals given a second injection of 0.5 ml oCRF41 immune serum 32 hrs. after the first, both ACTH and corticosterone titers fell rapidly below their circadian minimal levels in controls. Concomitantly, the concentration of immune serum in the peripheral plasma, and its capacity to bind to oCRF, rose by 50%. The major role of CRF41 as a diurnal trigger of the circadian rhythm of ACTH is discussed, as well as the limits of passive immunization.  相似文献
