Abstract.  Although the effects of temperature on insect behaviours are studied frequently, few studies report on the relationship between temperature and anti-predator behaviours. A negative relationship between ambient temperature and the intensity of death-feigning is found in adults of two seed beetle species, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) and C. chinensis (L.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). Two traits representing the intensity of immobility, the frequency and the duration of death-feigning, are measured at different temperatures. Almost all adults feign death at 15 °C, but the frequency of death-feigning decreases at higher temperatures in C. maculatus , whereas all C. chinensis adults show this behaviour at 15 and 20 °C and almost all show it at 25 °C, but the frequency of death-feigning decreases at 30 and 35 °C. The difference between the two species might be due to the specific strain of each species used in the experiment. The duration of death-feigning is correlated negatively with the increase in ambient temperature in both species. The frequency at which adults feigned death is higher in females than in males in both species, but the duration of death-feigning is higher in females than in males only in C. maculatus . The relationships between temperature and death-feigning behaviours are discussed from physiological and ecological viewpoints.

Size-dependent differences in death-feigning behavior, an anti-predator defense, was examined in the adult adzuki bean beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). A positive correlation was observed between the duration of death-feigning and adult body weight in two replicated experiments. Moreover, under starved condition, beetles reared under high (= lighter beetles) larval density showed significantly shorter longevity and a shorter duration of death-feigning than those reared under low (= heavier beetles) larval density. The body-size-dependent difference in the duration of death-feigning is discussed from the viewpoint of the difference in survival strategies between small and large beetles. Because small beetles don’t live as long, they have less time in which to reproduce and so any loss of that short time might be a greater proportion of their fitness lost. This is the first report on the body-size-dependent difference in death-feigning behavior in the adult holometabolic beetle.

Usually, several traits in organisms are genetically linked with each other; thus, correlated responses to selection are generally observed. Anti-predator behaviors may be genetically correlated with other traits such as life-history. We compared the life-history traits of individuals derived from two regimes artificially selected for the duration of death feigning in the adzuki bean beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis. The two-way selected regimes include the L-lines with stronger intensity (longer duration and higher frequency) and the S-lines with weaker intensity (shorter duration and lower frequency) of death feigning. L-lines exhibited greater longevity, higher rates of emergence, laid bigger eggs and greater reproductive effort, and also had a tendency of faster development. Fecundity was not significantly different between L- and S-lines. These results provide the novel possibility that death feigning is a potentially advantageous anti-predator behavior that, through a positive genetic correlation with some life-history traits, can bring a higher fitness to an individual adopting this behavior. This novel aspect might explain why death-feigning behavior is prevalent in various taxonomic animal groups.

Dispersal ability may influence antipredator and mating strategies. A previous study showed a trade-off between predation avoidance and mating success in strains of the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum selected for walking distance. Specifically, beetles derived from strains selected for longer walking distance suffered higher predation pressure and had higher male mating success than their counterparts derived from strains selected for shorter walking distance. In the study reported here, we compared the locomotor activity, biogenic amine expression in the brain, and death-feigning behavior of the red flour beetle strains selected for walking distance. The results indicated that individuals genetically predisposed to longer walking distance had higher locomotor activity and lower intensity of death-feigning behavior than those genetically predisposed to shorter walking distance. However, no significant differences were found in the expression of biogenic amines in the brain among strains selected for walking distance, although the level of dopamine in the brain differed from that of the strains divergently selected for duration of death-feigning behavior. The relationships between walking speed, activity, death-feigning behavior, and brain biogenic amines in T. castaneum are discussed.

Divergent lines selected artificially for many generations make it possible to answer two questions: (1) whether genetic variation still exists within the selected population; and (2) whether the selection itself is costly for the selected strain. In previous studies, the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum was divergently selected artificially for duration of death-feigning, and strains selected for longer (L-strain) and shorter (S-strain) durations of death-feigning have been established (Miyatake et al. 2004, 2008). Because the selection experiments have been conducted for more than 27 generations, genetic variation may be eroded. Furthermore, because another previous study reported physiological costs to L-strains, the L-strains selected artificially for longer duration of death-feigning may have suffered more costs than the S-strains. In the present study, therefore, we relaxed the selection pressure after the 27th or 30th generation of S- and L-strains. We also carried out reverse selection during the most recent eight generations of S- and L-strains. The results showed that each strain clearly responded to relaxation of selection and reverse selection, suggesting that (1) additive genetic variation still existed in both strains after long-term selection, and (2) selection for shorter and longer duration of death-feigning was costly. These results suggest that anti-predator behavior is controlled by many loci, and longer or shorter duration of death-feigning is costly in a laboratory without predators.

A prey animal may have the alternative of flying away or feigning death when it encounters predators. These alternatives have a genetic base as anti-predator strategies in the adzuki bean beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis. A negative genetic correlation between death-feigning intensity and flying ability was found in C. chinensis, i.e. lower flying ability is genetically connected to escaping by dropping from a perch and then feigning death, whereas higher flying ability does not correspond to death-feigning behaviour. Two bidirectional artificial selections for death-feigning duration and flying ability were conducted independently in C. chinensis. The strains selected for shorter (longer) duration of death-feigning had higher (lower) flying ability, while the strains selected for lower (higher) flying ability showed longer (shorter) duration of death-feigning. When the two traits were compared in 21 populations of C. chinensis derived from different geographical regions, a significant negative correlation was found between death-feigning intensity and flying ability. Based on these results, the choice between alternative escaping behaviours in animals is discussed from two points of view: phenotypic plasticity, an individual with two tactics; and pleiotropic genetic correlation, different individuals with opposite strategies.

  • 1 Adult pine weevils Hylobius abietis emerge from conifer root‐stumps, on which larvae develop, over an extended period during summer and autumn. Newly‐emerged weevils were tested for their ability to fly and assessed for wing muscle and reproductive development. In addition, the effect of summer–autumn maturation feeding on reproductive development was assessed in field bioassays.
  • 2 There was considerable variation in development between newly‐emerged weevils that was related to the timing of emergence. The first weevils, emerging in early July, weighed less than later‐emerging ones, had undeveloped flight muscles and did not fly. Over the emergence period, wing muscle size and flight ability increased markedly, with 50–60% flying by mid‐September. Differences between emerging adults are likely to have been affected by temporal changes in the quality of the bark on which the larvae feed.
  • 3 Reproductive development lagged behind that of wing muscles but, in early August, there was a rapid increase in the proportion of weevils with immature eggs and a corresponding increase in oocyte size. However, although wing muscles were fully formed in later‐emerging weevils, immature eggs were only approximately 10% of the volume of mature eggs.
  • 4 In field bioassays of summer–autumn maturation feeding, eggs continued to develop and some weevils laid mature eggs. Feeding and development during the pre‐overwinter period is likely to influence winter survival and also dispersal and reproduction in the following spring.
  • 5 The potential effects of climate change on the weevil life cycle are briefly discussed. Weevils are likely to benefit from the higher temperatures and later autumns predicted under climate change, resulting in an increase in damage to transplants.

Huddling groups at sleeping sites, and allogrooming and proximity in the daytime during winter, were examined in a wild Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) troop on Kinkazan Island in the non-snowy district of northern Japan. All sleeping groups, defined as a cluster in which individuals huddle at sleeping sites, were formed on the ground. Their sizes tended to increase when the temperature was lower. The number of adults with mutual physical contact in sleeping groups increased when the size of sleeping groups increased. These results suggest that the physiological function of huddling is protection from low temperatures, and that macaques select the ground as sleeping sites to form large sized groups. Huddling was performed most frequently among kin dyads. Non-related dyads which appeared to be affiliative in the daytime also huddled frequently at sleeping sites. Even non-related dyads which showed affiliative behavior less frequently in the daytime exhibited huddling, at night, however, they did so less often than those of kin dyads and affiliated dyads. It appears that huddling at night by pairs that did not normally affiliate in the daytime was made possible by the increased tolerance of individuals responding to colder temperatures at night in winter. Furthermore, huddling, grooming, and proximity were exhibited at greater frequency between kin dyads, and between high-ranking males and specific females of kin groups, although the dyads of individuals older than 15 years often were involved only in huddling. These results suggest that two types of social bonds exist at sleeping sites in winter. One is the social bond common to both the daytime and nighttime, the other is peculiar to nighttime. Consequently, the social function of huddling is that, troop integration might increase at sleeping sites in winter as close social relationships among adults are extended more widely than those in daytime.

Abstract After herbivore attack, many plants emit herbivore‐induced plant volatiles (HIPVs). HIPVs can attract carnivores and/or repel herbivores, thereby mediating tritrophic plant–herbivore–carnivore interactions. HIPVs act as chemical information between organisms; hence, their variability and stability are vital. In the present study, variations in the volatile emissions, from the tea plant Camellia sinensis (O. Ktze) damaged by the tea weevil Myllocerinus aurolineatus (Voss) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), with weevil densities, photoperiod and infestation duration, were investigated. The volatiles induced by high‐density weevils were more abundant in composition and amount than those induced by low‐density weevils, whether at noon, night or after weevil removal. The induced volatile emissions were similar on the second and third day after infestation, and the emissions of the major induced compounds displayed diurnal cycles. Linalool, (E,E)‐α‐farnesene, and benzyl nitrile were emitted mainly at noon, whereas 1,3,8‐p‐menthatriene and (E)‐β‐ocimene were maximally emitted at night. Given the different emission dynamics, significant differences were found between noon‐ and night‐induced volatiles. In summary, tea plants damaged by different weevil densities emitted a relatively stable signal at a particular time. This stability could be attributed to the similarities under the two densities of the main induced volatile compounds, their relative ratios and the emission dynamics of the induced volatiles.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted to simultaneously evaluate sleep quality, duration, and phase in school-aged children and correlations between each dimension of sleep and daytime sleepiness were comprehensively examined. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with school-aged children enrolled in four public elementary schools in Joetsu city, Niigata prefecture in Japan (n = 1683). Among the collected responses (n = 1290), 1134 valid responses (547 boys and 587 girls) were analyzed (valid response rate was 87.90%). Data on daytime sleepiness, sleep quality (problems in sleeping at night), sleep duration (the average sleeping time during a week), and sleep phase (sleep timing: bedtime and rising time on weekdays, and sleep regularity: differences in bedtime and rising time between on weekdays and weekends) were collected. The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that the following dimensions were significantly correlated with daytime sleepiness: the decline in sleep quality [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 2.62, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.71–4.00], bedtime after 21:30 on weekdays (AOR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.15–2.18), bedtime delay on weekends, compared to weekdays (AOR = 1.75, 95% CI = 1.27–2.41), and bedtime advance on weekends, compared to weekdays (AOR = 3.33, 95% CI = 1.78–6.20). Sleep dimensions that significantly affected daytime sleepiness in school-aged children are sleep quality, bedtime-timing, and regularity of bedtime. It is important to detect problems in night sleep and establish treatments, as well as to provide support for early bedding on weekdays and for a regular bedtime both on weekdays and on weekends to prevent daytime sleepiness in school-aged children.

Vertical distributions of six species of Pleuromamma at ten stations across the eastern North Pacific Ocean from Honolulu to San Diego were determined from oblique Longhurst-Hardy Plankton Recorder tows to 650 m (350–450 m in the California Current). Vertical resolution was 20 m below 200 m and 5–10 m above. There was considerable overlap in surface layer distributions at night among all co-occurring species; daytime distributions showed less overlap. All species generally occurred deeper both day and night as distance offshore increased. The proportion of a species' population that remained at daytime depths during the night decreased with distance offshore. Warm water species penetrated into the California Current and nearshore region to a much greater extent than cool water species entered central gyre waters.

High temperature reduces crop production; however, little is known about the effects of high night temperature (HNT) on the development of male and female reproductive organs, pollination, kernel formation and grain yield in maize (Zea mays L.). Therefore, a temperature-controlled experiment was carried out using heat-sensitive maize hybrid and including three temperature treatments of 32/22°C (day/night; control), 32/26°C and 32/30°C during 14 consecutive days encompassing the flowering stage. When exposed to 30°C night temperature, grain yield and kernel number reduced by 23.8 and 25.1%, respectively, compared with the control. The decrease in grain yield was mainly because of the lower kernel number rather than change in kernel weight under HNT exposure around flowering. No significant differences in grain yield and kernel number were found between 22 and 26°C night temperatures. HNT had no significant effects on the onset of flowering time and anthesis-silking interval but significantly reduced time period of pollen shedding duration and pollen viability, and increased leaf night respiration. Different from high daytime temperature, HNT had no lasting effects on daytime leaf photosynthesis, biomass production and assimilate transportation. From the perspective of source–flow–sink relationship, the unchanged source and flow capacities during daytime are supposed to alleviate the adverse effects on sink strength caused by HNT compared with daytime heat stress. These new findings commendably filled the knowledge gaps concerning heat stress in maize.

The guidelines for night and shift workers recommend that after night work, they should sleep in a dark environment during the daytime. However, staying in a dark environment during the daytime reduces nocturnal melatonin secretion and delays its onset. Daytime bright-light exposure after night work is important for melatonin synthesis the subsequent night and for maintaining the circadian rhythms. However, it is not clear whether daytime sleeping after night work should be in a dim- or a bright-light environment for maintaining melatonin secretion. The aim of this study, therefore, was to evaluate the effect of bright-light exposure during daytime sleeping on nocturnal melatonin secretion after simulated night work. Twelve healthy male subjects, aged 24.8 ± 4.6 (mean ± SD), participated in 3-day sessions under two experimental conditions, bright light or dim light, in a random order. On the first day, the subjects entered the experimental room at 16:00 and saliva samples were collected every hour between 18:00 and 00:00 under dim-light conditions. Between 00:00 and 08:00, they participated in tasks that simulated night work. At 10:00 the next morning, they slept for 6 hours under either a bright-light condition (>3000 lx) or a dim-light condition (<50 lx). In the evening, saliva samples were collected as on the first day. The saliva samples were analyzed for melatonin concentration. Activity and sleep times were recorded by a wrist device worn throughout the experiment. In the statistical analysis, the time courses of melatonin concentration were compared between the two conditions by three-way repeated measurements ANOVA (light condition, day and time of day). The change in dim light melatonin onset (ΔDLMO) between the first and second days, and daytime and nocturnal sleep parameters after the simulated night work were compared between the light conditions using paired t-tests. The ANOVA results indicated a significant interaction (light condition and3 day) (p = .006). Post hoc tests indicated that in the dim-light condition, the melatonin concentration was significantly lower on the second day than on the first day (p = .046); however, in the bright-light condition, there was no significant difference in the melatonin concentration between the days (p = .560). There was a significant difference in ΔDLMO between the conditions (p = .015): DLMO after sleeping was advanced by 11.1 ± 17.4 min under bright-light conditions but delayed for 7.2 ± 13.6 min after sleeping under dim-light conditions. No significant differences were found in any sleep parameter. Our study demonstrated that daytime sleeping under bright-light conditions after night work could not reduce late evening melatonin secretion until midnight or delay the phase of melatonin secretion without decreasing the quality of the daytime sleeping. Thus, these results suggested that, to enhance melatonin secretion and to maintain their conventional sleep–wake cycle, after night work, shift workers should sleep during the daytime under bright-light conditions rather than dim-light conditions.

Comparative activity pattern during foraging of four albatross species
The activity patterns of foraging Yellow‐nosed Diomedea chlororhynchos, Sooty Phoebetria fusca, Black‐browed D. melanophris impavida and Grey‐headed Albatross D. chrysostoma were compared using loggers recording the timing of landing and take‐offs, as well as the duration of bouts in flight or on the water, and the overall time spent in flight. The four species spent a similar proportion of their foraging time in flight (56–65%). During the day they were mostly flying (77–85% of the daylight period) whereas at night they were mainly (61–71%) sitting on the water. The amount of time spent in flight during the daytime foraging period was related to the amount of time spent sitting on the water at night. Differences between species occurred in the duration of bouts in flight and on the water as well as in the frequency of landings and in the time elapsed between successive landings. Yellow‐nosed Albatrosses were more active than the other species, with more frequent short bouts in flight and more frequent successive landings at short intervals. Sooty Albatrosses landed or took‐off less often than the other species and were more active just before dusk. Black‐browed and Grey‐headed Albatrosses were more active at night, especially the first part of the night and far from the colonies. Their trips consisted of a commuting part and a foraging part. Black‐browed Albatrosses landed more often during the foraging than the commuting part, suggesting that they were not searching when travelling. The study suggests that there is no fundamental difference between the overall activity budgets of the four species although they show distinctive diet, morphology and life history traits. The differences observed between the four species were related mainly to differences in foraging technique. Comparison with the Wandering Albatross, the only species for which data were available previously, suggest that this larger species might differ completely in foraging technique from the smaller albatrosses.

We observed the seed-carrying and feeding behavior of a stink bug, Adrisa magna, under manipulated conditions in the laboratory. The bugs were most active at night but also fed on seeds under shelter during the daytime. When adults were housed on their own, they often left these shelters with the seeds in them and reused the abandoned seeds later. When several adults were introduced into a container, we found adults feeding communally and sucking on seeds abandoned by other bugs. It is suggested that seed-carrying behavior allows for communal feeding between conspecific bugs in heterogeneous environments. Received: April 19, 1999 / Accepted: May 22, 2000  相似文献

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) frequently kill their host within 1-2 days, and interest in EPN focuses mainly on their lethality. However, insects may take longer to die, or may fail to die despite being infected, but little is known about the effects of EPN infection on insects, other than death. Here we investigate both lethal and sub-lethal effects of infection by two EPN species, Steinernema carpocapsae and Heterorhabditis downesi, on adults of the large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis. Following 12 h nematode-weevil contact in peat, S. carpocapsae killed a significantly higher proportion of weevils (87-93%) than H. downesi (43-57%) at all concentrations tested. Less than 10% of weevils were dead within 2 days, and weevils continued to die for up to 10 days after exposure (LT50 of 3 days or more). In a separate experiment, live weevils dissected 6 days after a 24 h exposure to nematodes on filter paper harbored encapsulated and dead nematodes, showing that weevils could defend themselves against infection. Some live weevils also harbored live nematodes 6 days after they had been removed from the nematode infested medium. Feeding by weevils was not affected by infection with, or exposure to, either species of EPN. We discuss these results in relation to the use of EPN in biological control against H. abietis.

Some benthic invertebrates in streams make frequent, short journeys downstream in the water column (=drifting). In most streams there are larger numbers of invertebrates in the drift at night than during the day. We tested the hypothesis that nocturnal drifting is a response to avoid predation from fish that feed in the water column during the day. We surveyed diel patterns of drifting by nymphs of the mayfly Baetis coelestis in several streams containing (n=5) and lacking (n=7) populations of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Drifting was more nocturnal in the presence of trout (85% of daily drift occurred at night) than in their absence (50% of daily drift occurred at night). This shift in periodicity is due to reduced daytime drifting in streams with trout, because at a given nighttime drift density, the daytime drift density of B. coelestis was lower in streams occupied by trout than in troutless streams. Large size classes of B. coelestis were underrepresented in the daytime drift in trout streams compared to nighttime drift in trout streams, and to both day and night drift in troutless streams. Differences in daytime drift density between streams with and without trout were the result of differences in mayfly drift behaviour among streams because predation rates by trout were too low to significantly reduce densities of drifting B. coelestis. We tested for rapid (over 3 days) phenotypic responses to trout presence by adding trout in cages to three of the troutless streams. Nighttime drifting was unaffected by the addition of trout, but daytime drift densities were reduced by 28% below cages containing trout relative to control cages (lacking trout) placed upstream. Drift responses were measured 15 m downstream of the cages suggesting that mayflies detected trout using chemical cues. Overall, these data support the hypothesis that infrequent daytime drifting is an avoidance response to fish that feed in the water column during the day. Avoidance is more pronounced in large individuals and is, at least partially, a phenotypic response mediated by chemical cues.
