Insects are an essential component of squirrel monkey natural food. Eight of ten socially inexperienced infant squirrel monkeys, during their 2nd and 3rd month of age, directed their attention to living insects or film presentations of moving insects. They attempted to catch them with gradually improving success, and on at least two occasions consumed them. For comparison, group-living squirrel monkeys begin to eat solid food around their 2nd month of age, continuing with some nursing until about 11 or 13 months, and were only at this age seen to successfully catch and eat insects. Thus, as infant squirrel monkeys proved to be able to catch and eat insects before their first experience with conspecifics, an innate basis for this behavior can be assumed.  相似文献

Bolivian squirrel monkeys, unlike those of Brazilian origin, exhibit a marked fasting hyperbilirubinemia (FH) similar to that observed in Gilbert's syndrome in man. Since no delays in the hepatic clearance of sulfobromophthalein or indocyanine green are present, the Bolivian monkey appears to be similar to Gilbert's type I syndrome. FH can be significantly decreased by either phenobarbital or tin-protoporphyrin pretreatment. Nicotinic acid-induced hyperbilirubinemia and delayed tolbutamide clearance were not observed as in the human syndrome.  相似文献

Natural conceptual discriminations have been tested in many different species, including pigeons and a variety of non-human primates. The ability of four male squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) to learn and use the natural concept ‘squirrel monkey’ was investigated in this study. After a training phase, subjects were presented with novel stimuli in transfer and test trials. All subjects performed at a rate significantly above chance on the first test trial (p<.001), indicating that squirrel monkeys can utilize natural concepts in the laboratory.  相似文献

Entrainment patterns of the circadian rhythms of body temperature and locomotor activity were compared in 6 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) exposed to daily illumination cycles with abrupt transitions between light and darkness (LD-rectangular) or with gradual dawn and dusk transitions simulating natural twilights at the equator (LD-twilight). Daytime light intensity was 500 lux, and the total amount of light emitted per day was the same in the two conditions. Mean daytime body temperature levels were stable in LD-rectangular but increased gradually in LD-twilight, reaching peak levels during the dusk twilight. Locomotor activity showed a similar pattern, but with an additional, secondary peak near the end of dawn. Activity duration was about 0.5 h longer in LD-twilight than in LD-rectangular, but the time of activity midpoint was similar in the two conditions. Reentrainment of the body temperature rhythm was faster following an 8-h advance of the LD cycle than following an 8-h delay, but did not differ significantly between the two LD conditions. These results provide no evidence that the inclusion of twilight transitions affected the strength of the LD Zeitgeber, and suggest that the observed differences in the daily patterns reflected direct effects of light intensity on locomotor activity and body temperature rather than an effect of twilights on circadian entrainment mechanisms.Abbreviation LD light-dark  相似文献

The asexual blood stages of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite are responsible for inducing the clinical symptoms and the most severe presentations of malaria infection that causes frequent mortality and morbidity in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, making the blood stages of infection a key target of new malaria treatment and prevention strategies. Progress towards the development of more effective treatment and prevention strategies has been hindered by the limited availability of infection models that permit the sequential analysis of blood stage parasites in vitro followed by in vivo analysis to confirm therapeutic benefits. To advance a model for in vitro and in vivo analysis of blood stage parasites, we examined nine laboratory strains of P. falciparum to determine which strains could adapt to growth in vivo in splenectomized squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). Only one of the nine laboratory strains tested, the FCB strain, adapted to in vivo growth. Morphological analysis show that the adapted ring-stage parasites have a different morphology from original parasites cultured in vitro, and more often they were found to localize at the edge of the infected red blood cell. No remarkable differences were observed for both trophozoites and schizonts. The adapted strain can be cultured back in vitro similar to the original parasite, indicating that the adapted parasite can develop both in vitro and in vivo. This squirrel monkey-adapted P. falciparum parasite is expected to be suitable and is advantageous for the research and development of vaccines and antimalarial drugs.  相似文献

In order to enhance our understanding of the evolutionary history of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.), we newly sequenced and analyzed data from seven complete mitochondrial genomes representing six squirrel monkey taxa. While previous studies have lent insights into the taxonomy and phylogeny of the genus, phylogenetic relationships and divergence date estimates among major squirrel monkey clades remain unclear. Using maximum likelihood and Bayesian procedures, we inferred a highly resolved phylogenetic tree with strong support for a sister relationship between Saimiri boliviensis and all other Saimiri, for monophyly of Saimiri oerstedii and Saimiri sciureus sciureus, and for Saimiri sciureus macrodon as the sister lineage to the S. oerstedii/S. s. sciureus clade. We inferred that crown lineages for extant squirrel monkeys diverged around 1.5 million years ago (MYA) in the Pleistocene Epoch, with other major clades diverging between 0.9 and 1.1 MYA. Our results suggest a relatively recent timeline of squirrel monkey evolution and challenge previous conceptions about the diversification of the genus and its expansion into Central America.  相似文献

Routine examinations of fecal samples from squirrel monkeys suggested that intestinal trichomonads might be common inhabitants of these animals. In pursuit of these observations, microscopic examination of fecal suspensions and cultures have demonstrated a 100% incidence of trichomonads in 30 arbitrarily selected animals from a colony of more than 300 housed in groups of ten. The most prominent species was Pentatrichomonas hominis. A not yet fully characterized tritrichomonad was also found on several occasions. The main obstacle in establishing individual strains in culture was the presence of bacterial and fungal flora in the samples. Nevertheless, abundant cultures were obtained from 28 animals by inoculation of fecal suspensions into tissue cultures with appropriately formulated medium and high concentration of antibiotics. In several unattended cultures maintained at room temperature, the flagellates retained motility for at least 4 months. This long survival may explain the widespread occurrence of the parasites within a confined animal community.  相似文献

Respiratory abdominal movements during vocalization were measured in awake squirrel monkeys during spontaneous and playback-induced vocal activity. Large vocalization-correlated respiratory movements (VCRM) starting before vocalization were observed during several call types, such as peeping, trilling, cackling and err-chuck. Purring, in contrast, was accompanied by only small VCRM that started late after vocal onset. VCRM during trilling, a call with marked frequency modulation, showed a modulation in the rhythm of the frequency changes. A correlation with amplitude modulation was also present but more variable. As high frequencies need a higher lung pressure for production than low frequencies, the modulation of VCRM seems to serve to optimize the lung pressure in relation to the vocalization frequency. The modulation, furthermore, may act as a mechanism to produce different trill variants. During err-chucks and staccato peeps, which show a large amplitude modulation, a non-modulated VCRM occurred. Little is known about the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class 1 in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). We cloned, sequenced and characterized two alleles and the cDNA of the coding region of MHC class 1 in these New World monkeys. Phylogenetic analyses showed that these sequences are related to HLA class 1 genes (HLA-A and HLA-G). The structure and organization of one of the two identified clones was similar to that of a class 1 MHC gene (HLA-A2). All the exon/intron splice acceptor/donor sites are conserved and their locations correspond to the HLA-A2 gene. The sequences of the newly described cDNAs reveal that they code for the characteristic class 1 MHC proteins, with all the features thought necessary for cell surface expression. Typical sequences for the leader peptide, 1, 2, 3, transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains were found.The nucleotide sequence data reported in this paper have been submitted to the GenBank database and have been assigned the accession numbers AJ438576 (Sasc-G*31), AJ438577 (Sasc-G*25), AY282760 (Sasc-G*03), AY282761 (Sasc-G*04) and AY282762 (Sasc-G*05). 2013 年2 月18 - 20 日,四川省雅安市碧峰峡野生动物园内6 只松鼠猴突然接连死亡,同时约有100 只松鼠猴也出现了不同症状,给动物园造成了严重的损失。为寻找传染病因和治疗防控措施,首先采用尸体剖解和病理切片对其进行了组织学检查,然后采用细菌分离培养和鉴定确定了病原菌,通过动物回归试验和耐药性试验发现其致病性和流行性特征,并采取紧急治疗和防疫措施及时控制了疫情。结果表明,死猴尸体内多处器官发生淤血坏死,组织病变严重并可见大量细菌。经鉴定,分离到的病原细菌为假结核耶尔森菌,该菌与鼠疫耶尔森菌同源性极高,且具有强烈的致病性、传染性和一定的耐药性,对丁胺卡拉霉素较为敏感。这是我国首次发现并报道的松鼠猴感染假结核耶尔森菌病例,本文对其诊断与治疗、流行病学研究和病理模型建立提供了一定的基础参考资料。  相似文献

The present study analyzed haptic abilities of four squirrel monkeys. Using a two-alternative forced-choice procedure, stimuli were presented in a visually opaque box, allowing unrestrained test subjects to grab through a small opening and touch the discriminanda. Difference thresholds were determined by a modified method of limits. In the first experiment we determined size difference thresholds for the discrimination of circular cylinders using standard stimuli differing in diameter from 10 mm to 35 mm. In the second experiment a texture difference threshold was obtained for the discrimination of grooved surfaces (groove width 2-7 mm).The squirrel monkeys achieved a mean size difference threshold of 8% stimulus difference. The linear increase of absolute thresholds as a function of the starting stimulus size showed that haptic size discriminations in squirrel monkeys correspond to Weber's law. Three of the animals achieved a texture difference of 10% stimulus difference, while one monkey showed a distinctively lower haptic acuity. An analysis of the exploratory behavior points to a subject-related difference in the significance of cutaneous and kinesthetic information during size discriminations. Whereas differences in the animals' exploratory behavior did not correlate with the size difference threshold a subject achieved, different thresholds for texture discrimination can be explained by the different exploratory procedures the monkeys used to touch grooved surfaces. The low difference thresholds determined for the squirrel monkeys in the present study point to the significance of unrestrained test conditions for the assessment of the haptic capacity of a species.  相似文献

Visually recognizable social signals and structural call components, which had been demonstrated to be of social relevance within their own communication channel in previous experiments (disregarding or experimentally excluding other ones), were treated together, and their inter-dependencies analyzed when they were performed simultaneously in spontaneous behavior sequences of pairs of adult squirrel monkeys. It was found that: (1) all call classes were uttered within periods when either genital display or “triumph gesture” were shown; (2) production rates of particular vocal classes significantly deviated from no-display periods; (3) degree and direction of deviations (more/less frequent) were quite specific for both vocal and nonvocal classes (Figs. 1a & 1b); (4) differences depended also on which animal actually displayed (the vocalizing one, the other one, or both; Fig. 3); and (5) differences found for single animals when they played different roles in the experimental situation were smaller than those found between individuals, which could be related to dominance status (Table 2). The possibility of mutual modification of signals of different modalities and perspectives for future work are discussed.  相似文献

We tested whether infant Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) have a cross-modal representation of their own species. We presented monkeys with a photograph of either a monkey or a human face on an LCD monitor after playing back a vocalization of one of those two species. The subjects looked at the monitor longer when a human face was presented after the monkey vocalization than when the same face was presented after human vocalization. This suggests that monkeys recall and expect a monkey’s face upon hearing a monkey’s voice.  相似文献

Alloantigens of squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) IgG were studied using alloantisera prepared by cross-immunizations among four subspecies. The results demonstrated the occurrence of IgG antigenic polymorphism. Three distinct Fd fragment allotypes were detected. Greater alloantigenic complexity occurred among Colombian and Peruvian squirrel monkeys, which occupy the more central regions of the geographic range; Bolivian and Guyanan monkeys, which occupy the extremes of the range, expressed less alloantigenic complexity.  相似文献

Non-human primates have been playing an essential role in the study of hepatitis A virus (HAV) biology, pathogenesis and for testing candidate HAV vaccines. This study was to determine the suitability of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) as animal model for HAV infection. Animals were inoculated, either intragastrically or intravenously, with a Brazilian HAV isolate (HAF-203). Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and anti-HAV antibodies (IgM and total) were monitored. Feces were daily collected for HAV antigen and HAV RNA detection. Samples of liver tissue were obtained by biopsy before inoculation at peak ALT levels and/or when anti-HAV antibodies developed, and at necropsy for morphological examination. Monkeys inoculated by the intravenous route rapidly developed significant elevations of serum ALT, anti-HAV antibodies, and liver histologic changes, while the only evidence of HAV infection in intragastrically inoculated animals was the seroconversion. Moreover, squirrel monkeys excreted very low levels of HAV detectable in only few fecal samples after amplification by RT-PCR, different from humans and other non-human primate species that eliminate large quantities of virus during the late incubation period. The unusual onset of hepatitis A in experimentally infected squirrel monkeys represent an important obstacle for its use as animal model for the study of this viral infection. However, they can represent a valuable tool for the obtention of hyperimmune sera for HAV, in the view of the very high titer of anti-HAV developed (105) 24 days after a single intravenous inoculation.  相似文献

A Porocephalus nymph found in the meninges of a squirrel monkey was encapsulated by connective tissue cells and fibrils presumably derived from the pia mater. The capsule was composed of an inner layer (IL) adjacent to the nymphal integument and an outer layer (OL) adherent to the brain surface. Separating the two layers was a capsular space. The IL was lined by a granular material adjacent to the nymph surface and possessed impressions of annulae and the apical pits of chloride cells. The surface of IL facing the capsular space was characterized by a monolayer of cells possessing extensive anastomosing plasmalemmal processes. The OL was composed of several tiers of fibroblasts and associated collagen fibrils that adhered to the brain surface in the form of a thickened pia mater. It is suggested that the capsule was formed by a modification of the pia that isolated the nymph and created an "intracapsular space" with specialized lining cells to facilitate fluid exchange.  相似文献

The lobular division, bronchial tree, and blood vessels in lungs of seven squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were examined from the viewpoint of comparative anatomy. The right lung of the squirrel monkey consists of the upper, middle, lower, and accessory lobes, whereas the left lung consists of the upper, middle, and lower lobes. These lobes are completely separated by interlobular fissures. In three of seven examples examined the left middle lobe was lacking. The squirrel monkey lung has four bronchiole systems, i.e. dorsal, lateral, ventral, and medial, on both sides. The upper lobes are formed by the first branches of the dorsal bronchiole systems. The middle lobes are formed by the first branches of the lateral bronchiole systems. The remaining bronchioles constitute the lower lobes. In addition to the above lobes, in the right lung, the accessory lobe is present, being formed by the first branch of the ventral bronchiole system. The right pulmonary artery runs across the ventral side of the right upper lobe bronchiole, and then across the dorsal side of the right middle lobe bronchiole. Thereafter, it runs between the dorsal bronchiole and lateral bronchiole systems along the dorso-lateral side of the right bronchus. During its course, the right pulmonary artery gives off the arterial branches which run along each bronchiole. These branches run mainly along the dorsal or lateral side of the bronchioles. In the left lung, the pulmonary artery and its branches run the same course as in the right lung. The pulmonary veins run mainly the ventral or medial side of the bronchioles, and between the bronchioles.  相似文献

In a task designed to simulate olfactory-guided foraging, the ability of squirrel monkeys to discriminate an artificial 12-component odorant from 3-, 6-, 9- or 11- component submixtures was investigated. A combination of factors was found to contribute to the animals' performance:
1.  Discriminability generally decreased as the number of components in the submixture increased.
Submixtures did not contribute equally to mixture perception, and one component in particular (cineole) disproportionately influenced stimulus discriminability.
3.  Interactive effects between submixtures resulted in marked deviations from the general pattern of discriminability.
4.  Changes in the relative concentration of submixtures could also influence discriminability.
5.  Finally, individual differences in responsiveness to particular stimuli were apparent.
