Selected prisoners, most of them with severe character disorders, are permitted to serve the remaining portion of their sentence on parole in the community on condition that they be patients in psychotherapy at a psychiatric clinic created in 1953 for this purpose. Nearly all the patients begin without personal motivation for such treatment. Attendance has been attained because parole officers are assigned to the task of enforcing attendance. Coercion can bring these reluctant patients to expose themselves to treatment, but staff members then have the task to overcome hostility, combat extensive rationalizations, and transform an initially poor rapport into patient participation in working through major personality change. This clinic provides an interesting laboratory for the development of a psychiatric treatment program for adults who have not responded well to a great variety of forms of correctional care.  相似文献

Peripheral blood smears from 1,547 birds, of 50 species, from 15 families trapped in Northfield, Vermont were examined for hematozoa. Numerous new host-parasite relationships were identified. The prevalence of all species of parasites over the 3 yr of the study was 42.5%. Prevalence of the genera of parasites were: Leucocytozoon--36.5%; Trypanosoma--7.3%; Haemoproteus--6.3%; microfilariae--1.0%; Plasmodium--1.0%. Peak prevalence (78.9%) occurred in the first half of July. Peak intensity was seen in the last half of June. Evidence from immature birds suggested that active transmission of all genera of hematozoans took place in the study area. Leucocytozoon gametocytes, unlike Haemoproteus gametocytes, were detected in smears from birds during all seasons of the year, and showed no period of complete remission. Trypanosoma and microfilariae also were seen throughout the year.  相似文献

Sixty-four birds of 43 species were caught at six localities in Colombia during the dry season in March 1998 and investigated for hematozoa by microscopic examination of stained blood films. Haemoproteus coatneyi, Plasmodium vaughani, Leucocytozoon sp., and microfilariae were identified. The overall prevalence of infection was 8%. Prevalences of infection for Haemoproteus spp., Plasmodium spp., Leucocytozoon spp., and microfilariae were 3%, 2%, 2%, and 3%, respectively. All hemosporidian infections encountered were of low intensity (< 1% of infected erythrocytes). The low prevalences and intensities of hemosporidian parasites in this study are in accord with other records from the Neotropics.  相似文献

A theoretical model for dry blood smears is investigated. Circular elements with normally distributed radii and ellipses are considered. The differences in diffraction pattern of sparse and dense smears are explained. The theory is supported by some recordings by means of a simple photoelectric device. The occurrence and seasonal patterns of transmission of the blood protozoa of wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) were studied at Tallahala Wildlife Management Area (TWMA) (Jasper County, Mississippi, USA). Blood smears obtained from wild turkeys in winter, spring and summer, and from sentinel domestic turkeys throughout the year were examined for Haemoproteus meleagridis and Leucocytozoon smithi. Whole blood from wild turkeys captured in summer was subinoculated into malaria-free domestic turkey poults and recipient birds were examined for Plasmodium spp. The prevalence of H. meleagridis and L. smithi were not different (P greater than 0.05) between adults and juveniles or between male and female turkeys in any season. Leucocytozoon smithi was not detected in poults in summer or in juveniles examined in winter. Sentinel studies and information from wild birds revealed that transmission of H. meleagridis and L. smithi did not overlap. Haemoproteus meleagridis was transmitted from May through November, while L. smithi was transmitted only from January through April. The onset of transmission of H. meleagridis coincided with peak hatching (mid-May) and brood-rearing (May-November) of turkey poults. Plasmodium spp. were not found in turkeys from TWMA (n = 27) nor in birds from three widely separated counties (n = 28) in Mississippi.  相似文献

A total of 641 birds representing 135 species of 25 families from Noel Kempff Mercado National Park in west-central Bolivia was examined for hematozoa; only 33 (5.1%) harbored blood parasites. Microfilariae were the most commonly encountered hematozoans, followed, in numerical sequence, by species of Haemoproteus and Plasmodium; Trypanosoma, Atoxoplasma, and Hepatozoon were seen infrequently. The survey included 13 new host-parasite records, and 58 species of birds were examined for blood parasites for the first time; 43 were parasite-free. The low prevalence of parasitism recorded in this survey is compared to other areas in the Neotropical region and to prevalence of blood parasites in the avifauna of other major land masses.  相似文献

A simple technique which automatically detects and then segments nucleated cells in Wright's giemsa-stained blood smears is presented. Our method differs from others in 1) the simplicity of our algorithms; 2) inclusion of touching (as well as nontouching) cells; and 3) use of these algorithms to segment as well as to detect nucleated cells employing conventionally prepared smears. Our method involves: 1) acquisition of spectral images; 2) preprocessing the acquired images; 3) detection of single and touching cells in the scene; 4) segmentation of the cells into nuclear and cytoplasmic regions; and 5) postprocessing of the segmented regions. The first two steps of this algorithm are employed to obtain high-quality images, to remove random noise, and to correct aberration and shading effects. Spectral information of the image is used in step 3 to segment the nucleated cells from the rest of the scene. Using the initial cell masks, nucleated cells which are just touching are detected and separated. Simple features are then extracted and conditions applied such that single nucleated cells are finally selected. In step 4, the intensity variations of the cells are then used to segment the nucleus from the cytoplasm. The success rate in segmenting the nucleated cells is between 81 and 93%. The major errors in segmentation of the nucleus and the cytoplasm in the recognized nucleated cells are 3.5% and 2.2%, respectively.  相似文献

In the blood-spread of frog size and extinction of nuclei of erythrocytes, thrombocytes and neutrophile leucocytes with segmental nucleus were investigated. The substance of nucleus was made visible by means of colouring in according to May-Grünwald and the DNA-content in according to Feulgen-reaction. The thickeness of layer and relief of the spread were recorded and measured with a touch-equipment. The nuclei and segments of nucleus, which are flat disks in the dry spread (nuclei of thrombocytes are about 0.75 mum thick), are considered to be rotational ellipsoids in the fluid blood; volume, surface and quantity of DNA are calculated. The erythrocytes have the smallest. the leucocytes the largest quantity of DNA in the nucleus. The concentration of the substance of nucleus and of the DNA increases with the dryness of the spread, to about the sixfold value at the nuclei of thrombocytes.  相似文献
