Organisms modify their development and function in response to the environment. At the same time, the environment is modified by the activities of the organism. Despite the ubiquity of such dynamical interactions in nature, it remains challenging to develop models that accurately represent them, and that can be fitted using data. These features are desirable when modeling phenomena such as phenotypic plasticity, to generate quantitative predictions of how the system will respond to environmental signals of different magnitude or at different times, for example, during ontogeny. Here, we explain a modeling framework that represents the organism and environment as a single coupled dynamical system in terms of inputs and outputs. Inputs are external signals, and outputs are measurements of the system in time. The framework uses time-series data of inputs and outputs to fit a nonlinear black-box model that allows to predict how the system will respond to novel input signals. The framework has three key properties: it captures the dynamical nature of the organism–environment system, it can be fitted with data, and it can be applied without detailed knowledge of the system. We study phenotypic plasticity using in silico experiments and demonstrate that the framework predicts the response to novel environmental signals. The framework allows us to model plasticity as a dynamical property that changes in time during ontogeny, reflecting the well-known fact that organisms are more or less plastic at different developmental stages.  相似文献

The evolutionary implications of environmental change due to organismic action remain a controversial issue, after a decades—long debate on the subject. Much of this debate has been conducted in qualitative fashion, despite the availability of mathematical models for organism–environment interactions, and for gene frequencies when allele fitness can be related to exploitation of a particular environmental resource. In this article we focus on representative models dealing with niche construction, ecosystem engineering, the Gaia Hypothesis and community interactions of Lotka–Volterra type, and show that their quantitative character helps bring into sharper focus the similarities and differences among their respective theoretical contexts.  相似文献

Transgenic insecticidal plants based onBacillus thuringiensis (Bt) endotoxins, on proteinase inhibitors and on lectins, and transgenic herbicide tolerant plants are widely used in modern agriculture. The results of the studies on likelihood and non-likelihood of adverse effects of transgenic plants on the environment including: (i) effects on nontarget species; (ii) invasiveness; (iii) potential for transgenes to ‘escape’ into the environment by horizontal gene transfer; and (iv) adverse effects on soil biota are reviewed. In general, it seems that large-scale implementation of transgenic insecticidal and herbicide tolerant plants do not display considerable negative effects on the environments and, moreover, at least some transgenic plants can improve the corresponding environments and human health because their production considerably reduces the load of chemical insecticides and herbicides.  相似文献

In order to establish the portrait of Urbilateria, the common ancestor of triblastic metazoan, this paper focuses on the antero-posterior segmentation frequently considered as characterising the bilaterian bauplan. The synthesis presented here describes the morphological, anatomical and functional aspects of this organisation. Furthermore it analyses the conditions of its emergence during the ontogenesis of Annelids, Arthropods and Chordates and identifies its genetic bases. The provided data exhibit the unitary character of the segmentation modalities among protostomian and deuterostomian organisms. This process occurs in two phases, involving a posterior proliferative zone after the gastrulation. It shows the similarity of the expression patterns of orthologous genes, the implication of comparable signalisation and regulation pathways. The congruence of the results obtained at both structural and molecular levels reinforce the segmental organisation conception of the common ancestor of Bilaterians.  相似文献

Two closely related controversial problems are discussed: whether the developmental processes can be reduced to the synthesis of polypeptides encoded in DNA, and whether the information in DNA is equivalent to that in the adult organism. Critically considered are the ideas that DNA is only responsible for the protein synthesis, whereas morphogenesis proceeds independently and according to epigenetic regularities of its own. It is stated that development is the realization of genetic information in which more elementary (molecular) processes unambiguously determine a more complex cellular level which in its turn determines morphogenesis of tissues and organs. Various mechanisms of the appearance of new information in the course of development are considered. The statement is made that new information concerns only some individual characters of the organism, whereas most of information that determines the process of development and the structure of the adult organism is created in the course of evolution, is stored in DNA and inherited.  相似文献

The question, "What is an organism?," formerly considered as essential in biology, has now been increasingly replaced by a larger question, "What is a biological individual?" On the grounds that i) individuation is theory-dependent, and ii) physiology does not offer a theory, biologists and philosophers of biology have claimed that it is the theory of evolution by natural selection that tells us what counts as a biological individual. Here I show that one physiological field, immunology, offers a theory that makes possible a biological individuation based on physiological grounds. I give a new answer to the question of the individuation of an organism by linking together the evolutionary and the immunological approaches to biological individuation.  相似文献

The effect of crowding on the chaperone-like activity of α-crystallin has been studied using aggregation of UV-irradiated glycogen phosphorylase b (Phb) from rabbit skeletal muscle as an aggregation test system. The merit of this test system is the possibility of testing agents that directly affect the stage of aggregation of the protein molecules. It was shown that the solution of Phb denatured by UV contained aggregates with a hydrodynamic radius of 10.4 nm. These aggregates are relatively stable at 20 °C; however, they reveal a tendency to stick further in the presence of crowding agents. The study of the effect of α-crystallin on the aggregation of UV-irradiated Phb in the presence of the crowding agents by dynamic light scattering at 37 °C showed that under crowding conditions the antiaggregation ability of α-crystallin was weakened. On the basis of the analytical ultracentrifugation, size-exclusion chromatography, and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis data, the scheme of interaction of UV-irradiated Phb and α-crystallin has been proposed. It is assumed that chaperone-target protein complexes of two types are formed, namely, the complexes of dissociated forms of α-crystallin with a protein substrate and high-mass α-crystallin-denatured protein complexes. The complexes of the first type reveal a weak propensity to aggregate even under crowding conditions. The complexes of the second type are characterized by the lower rate of aggregation in comparison with that of original UV-irradiated Phb. However, crowding stimulates the rate of aggregation of these complexes, resulting in the above-mentioned decrease in the chaperone-like activity of α-crystallin.  相似文献

Hydric environments are hypothesized to have minor effects on the embryonic development of rigid-shelled turtle eggs due to the low water permeability of the eggshell. However, the water reserve in the eggs may still influence their resistance to environmentally induced dehydration. We incubated rigid-shelled turtle eggs (Pelodiscus sinensis) on different moist substrates (from ? 12 to ? 750 kPa) to test the hypothesis that small rigid-shelled eggs would be sensitive to hydric environments. The hydric treatment significantly affected the incubation period, with eggs incubated in the moistest and driest substrates taking longer to hatch than those on the medium-moisture substrates. Hatching success was slightly lower for eggs incubated in dry conditions than those in wet conditions, but the difference was not statistically significant. The heart rates of early embryos were lower on moist substrates than those on dry substrates, but this difference disappeared in late embryos. Hatchlings from the moistest substrate were larger (in carapace length and width) and heavier than those from drier substrates. However, the dry body mass of the hatchlings did not differ among the hydric treatments. The functional performance (righting response) of the hatchlings was affected by the hydric environment. The time to right was shorter for the hatchlings from the substrate of ? 12 kPa than those from ? 220 kPa. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the hydric environment may significantly affect developing embryos and the resulting hatchlings in turtle species, such as P. sinensis, with small rigid-shelled eggs.  相似文献

Abstract Some clonal organisms may live for thousands of years and show no signs of senescence, while others consistently die after finite life spans. Using two models, we examined how stage-specific life-history rates of a clone's modules determine whether a genetic individual escapes senescence by replacing old modules with new ones. When the rates of clonal or sexual reproduction and survival of individual modules decline with age, clones are more likely to experience senescence. In addition, the models predict that there is a greater tendency to find senescence in terms of a decline in the rate of sexual reproduction with clone age than in terms of an increase in the probability of clone mortality, unless rates of sexual reproduction increase dramatically with module stage. Using a matrix model modified to represent the clonal lifestyle, we show how a trade-off between sexual and clonal reproduction could result in selection for or against clonal senescence. We also show that, in contrast to unitary organisms, the strength of selection on life-history traits can increase with the age of a clone even in a growing population, countering the evolution of senescence.  相似文献

It’s recently been argued that biological fitness can’t change over the course of an organism’s life as a result of organisms’ behaviors. However, some characterizations of biological function and biological altruism tacitly or explicitly assume that an effect of a trait can change an organism’s fitness. In the first part of the paper, I explain that the core idea of changing fitness can be understood in terms of conditional probabilities defined over sequences of events in an organism’s life. The result is a notion of “conditional fitness” which is static but which captures intuitions about apparent behavioral effects on fitness. The second part of the paper investigates the possibility of providing a systematic foundation for conditional fitness in terms of spaces of sequences of states of an organism and its environment. I argue that the resulting “organism–environment history conception” helps unify diverse biological perspectives, and may provide part of a metaphysics of natural selection.

Many plants and animals use the length of day or photoperiod to cue their seasonal patterns of development, reproduction, dormancy, and migration. Among temperate arthropods, the median or critical photoperiod increases with latitude or altitude. Concomitantly, in beetles, moths, mites, flies, and mosquitoes, there is a declining expression of a rhythmic, presumably circadian-based, component of photoperiodic response. It has been proposed that the long summer days in the north select for a reduced response to light by the circadian clock, which results in this declining rhythmic expression and, consequently, longer northern critical photoperiods. However, these patterns might also be due to direct, seasonal selection on the critical photoperiod itself, which results in a correlated reduction in the rhythmic component as a result of internal physiological constraints within the organism. Using standard light duration and selection experiments, we show that evolution of photoperiodic time measurement in the mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii, results from the direct response of critical photoperiod to seasonal selection and a correlated response of the rhythmic component of photoperiodic time measurement. We conclude that expression of the circadian clock is necessary neither for the central mechanism of photoperiodic time measurement nor for the adaptive modification of critical photoperiod.  相似文献

Beryllium could be a threatening heavy metal pollutant in the agro-ecosystem that may severely affect the performance of crops. Beryllium is used in various industries to make nuclear weapons and reactors, aircraft and space vehicle structures, instruments, and X-ray machines, and its entry into the environment is alarming for the productivity and sustainability of the ecosystem. In this review, we present a contemporary synthesis of the existing data regarding the toxic effects of beryllium on toxicity on biochemical and physiological processes in plants. Moreover, uptake, translocation, and assimilation of beryllium and its interaction with some essential mineral elements are also discussed. Although limited data are available regarding biochemical responses of plants to beryllium toxicity, we tried to clarify some basic physiological and biochemical steps that can be hampered by beryllium in plants. We linked our hypothetical concepts with previous evidence and provide a comprehensive summary of all possible remediation strategies that can be used for plants. Overall, we hope this review will be beneficial due to its practical implications and research directions.  相似文献

Mycobacterium bovis is the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in cattle and wildlife. Direct aerosol contact is thought to be the primary route of infection between conspecifics, whereas indirect transmission via an environmental reservoir of M. bovis is generally perceived not to be a significant source for infection. Here, we report on the application of molecular technology (PCR) to quantify the prevalence of M. bovis in the environment and to explore its epidemiological significance. We show that the detectability of viable M. bovis at badger setts and latrines is strongly linked to the frequency of M. bovis excretion by infected badgers, and that putative M. bovis in the environment is prevalent on a large proportion of endemic cattle farms in Britain. These results raise important questions about the role of an environmental reservoir in bTB persistence.  相似文献

Cancer is one of the most debilitating diseases worldwide. Cancer incidence and/or death depends on several intrinsic and extrinsic factors (e.g., dietary habits, socio-behavioral activities, physical inactivity, smoking, alcohol consumption, gender, races/ethnicities and age). Various studies have found that an inverse relationship subsists between environmental temperature and cancer risk. Furthermore, this negative relationship was found to be more consistent in the USA female population. This research mainly focuses on influence of aging on cold environment mediated cancer risk for overall and various anatomical site-specific cancers. Age-specific county-wise data of cancer incidence rate (CIR) in the USA female population was selected in this study. Statistical analysis found a negative correlation between the average annual temperature (AAT) and CIR in all anatomical sites (AAS; overall) as well as different anatomical site-specific cancers (e.g., breast, melanoma, leukaemia, pancreas, bladder, uterus, thyroid and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), except for cervical cancer) in different age groups (e.g., less than 50 years, 50 plus years, less than 65 years and 65 plus years). In addition, an inverse relationship between the AAT and CIR was found in case of paediatric cancer. However, all the results obtained from the linear model based statistical analysis proposed that the older age-group of females particularly above 65 years seems to be more prone to cold temperature linked cancer risk. For example, age-specific cold linked cancer incidence appears to be more inclined in case of breast cancer in the age-group of 65 plus years. This study, for first time, proposes that aging may have a positive influence on the relationship between cancer incidence and environment temperature.  相似文献
