The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effect of acute (20-30 min) elevations of inspired CO2 partial pressure (PICO2) on whole-body O2 consumption (VO2). In human subjects, VO2 increased approximately 15 ml.min-1.m-2 with each 7-Torr increment in PICO2 from 0.4 to 28 Torr (P less than 0.05), but VO2 did not change significantly when PICO2 was increased from 28 to 35 and 42 Torr (P greater than 0.05). In ponies, VO2 did not change when PICO2 was increased from 0.7 to 7 Torr (P greater than 0.05), but it increased about 6 ml.min-1.m-2 with each 7-Torr increment in PICO2 from 7 to 28 Torr, and it increased 18 ml.min-1.m-2 when PICO2 was increased from 28 to 42 Torr (P less than 0.05). At low PICO2 the delta VO2/ delta VE was 25 and 7 ml/l for humans and ponies, respectively, where VE is pulmonary ventilation. These values exceeded the expected O2 cost of breathing; hence, some factor, such as shivering or nonshivering thermogenesis, contributed to the elevated VO2. At high PICO2, VE increased without a proportional increase in VO2; thus the delta VO2/ delta VE decreased to about 2.5 ml/l in ponies and to near 0.0 in humans. Accordingly, at high PICO2 some VO2-suppressing factor partially counteracted those factors stimulating VO2. The maximum decrease from control pHa was 0.061 and 0.038 in humans and ponies, respectively. It is questionable whether this mild acidosis was sufficient to suppress VO2. In both species, pulmonary excretion of metabolic CO2 and the respiratory exchange ratio were below control during CO2 inhalation (P less than 0.01), which suggested an increased tissue storage of CO2. 相似文献

In this analysis, four performance phenotypes were used to compare mechanisms of control of aerobic maximum metabolic rate (MMR): (i) untrained sedentary (US) subjects, as a reference group against which to compare (ii) power trained (PT), (iii) endurance trained (ET) and (iv) high altitude adapted native (HA) subject groups. Sprinters represented the PT group; long distance runners illustrated the ET group; and Quechuas represented the HA group. Numerous recent studies have identified contributors to control on both the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) supply side and the ATP demand side of ATP turnover. Control coefficients or c(i) values were defined as fractional change in MMR/fractional change in the capacity of any given step in ATP turnover. From the best available evidence it appears that at MMR all five of the major steps in energy delivery (namely, ventilation, pulmonary diffusion, cardiac output, tissue capillary - mitochondrial O(2) transfer, and aerobic cell metabolism per se) approach an upper functional ceiling, with control strength being distributed amongst the various O(2) flux steps. On the energy demand side, the situation is somewhat simplified since at MMR approximately 90% of O(2)-based ATP synthesis is used for actomyosin (AM) and Ca(2+) ATPases; at MMR these two ATP demand rates also appear to be near an upper functional ceiling. In consequence, at MMR the control contributions or c(i) values are rather evenly divided amongst all seven major steps in ATP supply and ATP demand pathways right to the point of fatigue. Relative to US (the reference group), in PT subjects at MMR control strength shifts towards O(2) delivery steps (ventilation, pulmonary diffusion and cardiac output). In contrast in ET and HA subjects at MMR control shifts towards the energy demand steps (AM and Ca(2+) ATPases), and more control strength is focussed on tissue level ATP supply and ATP demand. One obvious advantage of the ET and HA control pattern is improved metabolite homeostasis. Another possibility is that, with some reserve capacity in the O(2) delivery steps and control focussed on ATP turnover at the tissue level, nature has designed the ideal 'endurance machine'. 相似文献

Resting metabolic rate in southern catfish of 2 and 5 day fasting groups were significantly higher than that of the 15 day fasting group ( P < 0·05). After feeding, peak metabolic rate of specific dynamic action (SDA) of the 15 day fasting group was significantly lower than that of the 2 and 5 day fasting groups ( P < 0·05). The duration of the SDA of the 15 day fasting group was significantly longer than that of the 2 day fasting group ( P < 0·05) and the SDA coefficient of the 15 day fasting group was significantly lower than that of the 2 day fasting group ( P < 0·05). 相似文献

We determined whether the [CO2] in the upper airways (UA) can influence breathing in ponies and whether UA [CO2] contributes to the attenuation of a thermal tachypnea during periods of elevated inspired CO2. Six ponies were studied 1 mo after chronic tracheostomies were created. For one protocol the ponies were breathing room air through a cuffed endotracheal tube. Another smaller tube was placed in the tracheostomy and directed up the airway. By use of this tube, a pump, and prepared gas mixtures, UA [CO2] was altered without affecting alveolar or arterial PCO2. When the ponies were at a neutral environmental temperature (TA) and breathing frequency (f) was 8 breaths X min-1, increasing UA [CO2] up to 18-20% had no effect on f. However, when TA was increased 20 degrees C to increase f to 50 breaths X min-1, then increasing UA [CO2] to 6% or to 18-20% reduced f by 5 +/- 1.7 (SE) and 12 +/- 1.6 breaths X min-1, respectively (t = 3.3, P less than 0.01). These data suggest that in the pony there exists a UA CO2-H+ sensory mechanism. For a second protocol the ponies were breathing a 6% CO2 gas mixture for 15 min in the normal fashion over the entire airway (nares breathing, NBr) or they were breathing this gas mixture for 15 min through the cuffed endotracheal tube (TBr). Increased availability of circulating free fatty acids (FFA) inhibits the rate of glycolysis in heart and resting skeletal muscle (Randle effect). Whether elevated FFA may play a role in decreasing carbohydrate oxidation during prolonged exercise in humans is more controversial. Using respiratory exchange measurements, we measured substrate utilization during 2.5 h of exercise at approximately 44 +/- 1% maximal O2 uptake (VO2 max) in the presence or absence of elevated FFA levels. After 30 min of base-line determinations, 1,000 U heparin was given intravenously and a 3-h constant infusion of Intralipid 10% (150 g/h) and heparin (500 U/h) was started. After an additional 30 min of rest, subjects exercised for 2.5 h (study 1, n = 6). In another five subjects (study 2) 100 g glucose was ingested after 30 min of exercise. The same protocols (studies 1 and 2) were also performed during a 0.9%-saline infusion. During exercise, without glucose ingestion, higher FFA concentrations prevailed during the Intralipid infusion (1,122 +/- 40 vs. 782 +/- 65 mumol/l), but the relative contributions of carbohydrate (49 +/- 4 vs. 50 +/- 4%) or lipid (49 +/- 4 vs. 47 +/- 6%) oxidation to the total energy expenditure were different only during the first 30 min of exercise. Similarly, higher FFA levels (1,032 +/- 62 vs. 568 +/- 46 mumol/l) did not alter the relative contributions of carbohydrate (62 +/- 4 vs. 69 +/- 2%) or lipid (36 +/- 4 vs. 29 +/- 2%) oxidation to the total energy expenditure after glucose feeding.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of elevated inspired CO2 on respiratory dead space (VD) of 12 normal, 8 carotid body-denervated (CBD), 7 hilar nerve-denervated (HND), and 6 CBD+HND ponies. The Fowler technique was used to determine VD on a breath-by-breath basis while the ponies breathed room air and inspired CO2 at 3 and 6%. During room air breathing, tidal volume (VT) and VD were greater in HND ponies than in normal and CBD ponies (P less than 0.05), and VT was less and VD/VT was greater after CBD than before CBD. For all groups. VD, VT, and breathing frequency (f) increased and VD/VT decreased significantly (P less than 0.01) with increasing inspired CO2. During CO2 breathing, VT and VD were higher (P less than 0.05) in the HND ponies than in all other groups, the decrease (P less than 0.05) in VD/VT was greatest in the CBD+HND group, and f was lower in the HND and HND+CBD than in the normal and CBD ponies. In addition, when inspired CO2 was increased from 0 to 6%, the decrease in VD/VT was greater and the increase in arterial PCO2 was less (P less than 0.05) after CBD than before CBD. For 70% of the ponies in all groups, VD increased linearly with increases in VT; for most of the remainder, VD tended to plateau at higher values of VT. 相似文献

ACh is the neurotransmitter responsible for increasing sweat rate (SR) in humans. Because ACh is rapidly hydrolyzed by acetylcholinesterase (AChE), it is possible that AChE contributes to the modulation of SR. Thus the primary purpose of this project was to identify whether AChE around human sweat glands is capable of modulating SR during local application of various concentrations of ACh in vivo, as well as during a heat stress. In seven subjects, two microdialysis probes were placed in the intradermal space of the forearm. One probe was perfused with the AChE inhibitor neostigmine (10 microM); the adjacent membrane was perfused with the vehicle (Ringer solution). SR over both membranes was monitored via capacitance hygrometry during microdialysis administration of various concentrations of ACh (1 x 10(-7)-2 M) and during whole body heating. SR was significantly greater at the neostigmine-treated site than at the control site during administration of lower concentrations of ACh (1 x 10(-7)-1 x 10(-3) M, P < 0.05), but not during administration of higher concentrations of ACh (1 x 10(-2)-2 M, P > 0.05). Moreover, the core temperature threshold for the onset of sweating at the neostigmine-treated site was significantly reduced relative to that at the control site. However, no differences in SR were observed between sites after 35 min of whole body heating. These results suggest that AChE is capable of modulating SR when ACh concentrations are low to moderate (i.e., when sudomotor activity is low) but is less effective in governing SR after SR has increased substantially. 相似文献

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is responsible for up to 50% of total energy expenditure, and so should be under strong selection pressure, yet it shows extensive intraspecific variation and a low heritability. Environmental conditions during growth are thought to have long-term effects through 'metabolic programming'. Here we investigate whether nutritional conditions early in life can alter RMR in adulthood, and whether this is due to growth acceleration or the change in diet quality that prompts it. We manipulated dietary protein levels during the main growth period of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) such that an episode of poor nutrition occurred with and without growth acceleration. This produced different growth trajectories but a similar adult body mass. Only the diet that induced growth acceleration resulted in a significant (19%) elevation of RMR at adulthood, despite all the birds having been on the same diet after the first month. This is the first study to show that dietary-induced differences in growth trajectories can have a long-term effect on adult metabolic rate. It suggests that modification of metabolic efficiency may be one of the mechanisms mediating the observed long-term costs of accelerated growth, and indicates links between early nutrition and the metabolic syndrome. 相似文献

The objective of this research was to determine whether triploid fish differ from diploids in their routine metabolic rates across a range of acclimation temperatures. Sibling diploids and triploids were acclimated to 12, 15 and 18 degrees C (Atlantic salmon; Salmo salar) and to 9, 12 and 15 degrees C (brook charr; Salvelinus fontinalis) prior to experimentation. Routine metabolic rates were then determined three times over a two-month period. Triploids of both species had higher metabolic rates than diploids at lower temperatures, and lower metabolic rates than diploids at higher temperatures, demonstrating that triploids have different (i.e., lower) thermal optima than diploids. This likely explains prior observations of high mortality of triploids at chronically elevated, but sub-lethal, rearing temperatures for sibling diploids. 相似文献

Studies were carried out in 11 fetal sheep four days after surgery for insertion of catheters and electrocortical leads. After a 3 h control period an insulin infusion was given to the ewe and maintained for the next 4 h. Fetal arterial glucose fell from 0.85 +/- 0.10 to 0.57 +/- 0.06 mM (SEM) while oxygen content was unchanged (3.80 +/- 0.24 to 3.75 +/- 0.21 mM). Cerebral uptake of oxygen and glucose were determined from samples drawn simultaneously from the axillary artery and sagittal vein and cerebral blood flow (microsphere technique). There was no significant change in uptake of either oxygen or glucose by the fetal brain. We conclude that a rapid fall in fetal glucose levels with no change in oxygen content does not result in decrease in cerebral metabolism measured over a short term. 相似文献

The investigations were carried out on 70 growing broiler chickens. The chickens were kept on a higher and the other ones on the lower level of nutrition. As a result of this the rate of growth was different in both groups. Glucagon had a strong calorigenic effect, reaching a peak 30 min after its injection. This effect of glucagon increased progressively with the growth and development of birds reaching a maximum in chickens aged about 7 weeks, and weighing approx. 1200 g. In the birds examined 2 hours after feeding the calorigenic effect of glucagon was most expressed in birds maintained on the low nutrition levels. The fall of RQ after glucagon injection may suggest that this hormone has a strong lipolytic action. 相似文献

Altered baroreflex function may contribute to the cardiovascular changes associated with weightlessness. Since central blood volume (CBV) increases during simulated weightlessness we have examined the possibility that acute changes in CBV may modify baroreceptor function. We used graded head-up tilt (HUT) and head-down tilt (HDT) to induce changes in CBV, and neck suction to stimulate carotid baroreceptors, in 6 subjects. The increase in pulse interval induced by a negative pressure of 8.2 kPa (62 mm Hg) imposed for 10 s while supine was compared with the increase while tilted for 8 min at +/- 15 degrees, +/- 30 degrees and +/- 45 degrees. During HDT at 15 degrees the pulse interval over the first 5 cardiac cycles following suction onset was 51 +/- (SEM) 18 ms longer (p less than 0.05), at 30 degrees it was 61 +/- 20 ms longer (p less than 0.05), and at 45 degrees it was 74 +/- 35 ms longer (p less than 0.01), compared with supine. During HUT at 15 degrees the pulse interval was 25 +/- 9 ms shorter (p less than 0.05) than when supine, but was not significantly different at 30 degrees and 45 degrees. These responses occurred independently of changes in brachial blood pressure. Attenuation was also observed after 5 min (56 +/- 17 ms; less than 0.05), and after 40 min (25 +/- 9 ms; p less than 0.05) of 60 degrees HUT compared with supine. Middle Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials (MLAEPs) were recorded from 15 healthy subjects in order to evaluate the influence of different repetition rates on the latency and the amplitude of their main components Na, Pa and Nb. MLAEPs were obtained from Cz-ipsilateral ear lobe by averaging responses to 2000 monaural clicks delivered to both ears, at 65 dB SL of intensity, for each of 3 different repetition rates (1.1, 4.1, 8.1 Hz). Time base was 100 ms, analogical band-pass filter 5-1000 Hz (off-line digital bandpass: 20-100 Hz). The statistical analysis (repeated measures analysis of variance), demonstrated that, the latency and the amplitude of the Nb component were slightly influenced by repetition rate while Pa and Na were not. Moreover Nb showed the greatest interindividual variability (as already pointed out by other authors too); thus, we suggest that a stimulus rate of 8.1 Hz and the analysis of Na and Pa component only, can be regarded as the best assessment for MLAEPs evaluation when they are used for clinical purposes. 相似文献
