Foliar carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) of C3 plants decreases in water‐deficit situations as discrimination by the photosynthetic primary carboxylation reaction decreases. This diminished Δ in leaves under water deficit can be used as a tracer to study whole plant carbon allocation patterns. Carbon isotope composition (δ13C value) of leaf hot water extracts or leaf tissue sap represents a short‐term integral of leaf carbon isotope discrimination and thus represents the δ13C value of source carbon that may be distributed within a plant in water‐deficit situations. By plotting the δ13C values of source carbon against the δ13C values of sink tissues, such as roots or stems, it is possible to assess carbon allocation to and incorporation into sink organs in relation to already present biomass. This natural abundance labelling method has been tested in three independent experiments, a one‐year field study with the fruit tree species Ziziphus mauritiana and peach (Prunus persica), a medium‐term drought stress experiment with Ziziphus rotundifolia trees in the glasshouse, and a short‐term drought stress experiment with soybean (Glycine max). The data show that the natural abundance labelling method can be applied to qualitatively assess carbon allocation in drought‐stressed plants. Although it is not possible to estimate exact fluxes of assimilated carbon during water deficit the method represents an easy to use tool to study integrated plant adaptations to drought stress. In addition, it is a less laborious method that can be applied in field studies as well as in controlled experiments, with plants from any developmental stage.  相似文献

Movement of 14C-assimilates from young and mature leaves to young rose shoots (Rosa hybrida cv. Marimba) was examined in two developmental stages. In the first stage after bud breaking the young shoot, especially its tip, depends for its supply of assimilates mainly on the mature foliage. At this stage young leaves are powerful sinks and retain 97% of their own photosynthates. The translocated 3% move mainly to the roots. At a later stage, just after the appearance of the flower bud, most of the leaves on the shoot become a source. The upper leaves supply assimilates to the flower bud and to the upper part of the stem. The 14C-assimilates from the lower leaves move in two directions, the larger part being directed downward.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to test the possibility of scheduling regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) using exclusively maximum daily trunk shrinkage (MDS) measurements, and that RDI strategies can be applied in early maturing peach trees reducing significantly the seasonal water use. During three growing seasons, 6-year-old peach trees (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch cv. Flordastar) grafted on P. persica × P. amygdalus GF-677 peach rootstock were submitted to different drip irrigation treatments. Control (T0) plants were irrigated above the estimated crop evapotranspiration level (≈130% ETC) and T1 plants were submitted to RDI, which were irrigated in order to maintain MDS signal intensity (SI) values close to unity (no irrigation-related stress) from the fruit thinning stage to 2 weeks after harvest, at MDS SI values close to 1.3 during the early postharvest period, and at MDS SI values of 1.6 during the late postharvest period. The RDI strategy assayed reduced the seasonal water applied by 35-42% with respect to estimated ETC without affecting yield efficiency components or the distribution of different peach fruit categories, while improving water productivity. The only vegetative growth component affected by RDI was pruning weight, indicating that vigor regulation as a result of RDI may decrease the competition for assimilates between vegetative apexes and reserve tissues. Also, the absence of any significant effect of RDI on the ratio between yield and the increase in trunk cross sectional area suggested similar carbon partitioning schemes during fruit growth. To improve the precision of MDS SI-driven schedule in RDI strategies changes in the irrigation protocol should be considered so that the scheduled water deficit levels are attained more rapidly. For this, when it is necessary to change from a MDS SI threshold value to a higher one, the daily irrigation rate should be decreased by more than 3%.  相似文献

Pruned source-sink transport systems from predarkened plants of Amaranthus caudatus L. and Gomphrena globosa L. were used to study the localization of 14C-labeled photosynthate imported into experimentally induced sink leaves by microautoradiography. During a 6-h (Amaranthus) or a 4-h (Gomphrena) transport period, 14C-assimilates were translocated acropetally from a mature source leaf provided with 14CO2, into a younger induced sink leaf (dark/-CO2). In addition, a young still-expanding source leaf exposed to 14CO2 exported 14C-assimilates basipetally into a mature induced sink leaf (dark/-CO2). Microautoradiographs showed that imported 14C-photosynthate was strongly accumulated in the sieve element/companion cell complexes of midveins, secondary veins, and minor veins of both the mature and the expanding sink leaf. Some label was also present in the vascular parenchyma and bundlesheath cells. In petioles, 14C-label was concentrated in the sieve element/companion cell complexes of all bundles indicating that assimilates were imported and distributed via the phloem. Moreover, a considerable amount of radioactivity unloaded from the sieve element/companion cell complexes of petiolar bundles, was densely located at sites of secondary wall thickenings of differen-tiating metaxylem vessels, and at sites of chloroplasts of the vascular parenchyma and bundle-sheath cells. These observations were more striking in petioles of Gomphrena than Amaranthus.Abbreviation se/cc sieve element/companion cell  相似文献

Resource partitioning between shoot growth, storage and reproduction is poorly understood in many clonal plant species. This study documents seasonal patterns of growth, 14C-labelled photoassimilate distribution and remobilization in the invasive rhizomatous species Fallopia japonica (Japanese knotweed). Biomass accumulation above- and below-ground in F. japonica was rapid. By September, rhizome biomass had increased 18-fold from the initial harvest in May (representing 48% of total plant biomass) and this was maintained over winter. Patterns of 14C allocation from F. japonica shoots labelled at different times of year show that as the season progressed, the rhizomes became an increasingly important sink for current assimilate (the percentage of 14C recovered from rhizomes was 35% in August and 67% in September) and the corresponding retention of assimilate by established shoots declined. The percentage of 14C exported to roots was greatest in August. Relatively little photoassimilate was exported to other shoots on the plant, or to flowers. Recycling of photoassimilate was fairly tight in this species and 14C fixed by shoots in early May 1999 or September 1999 was remobilized to the rhizome prior to shoot senescence and death. Some of this 14C was then remobilized to new shoots early the following spring. These characteristics may contribute to the success of F. japonica in colonizing a variety of contrasting habitats, often with serious management implications.  相似文献

The absorption and distribution of N was measured monthly throught a calendar year in 3-year old peach trees (Prunus persica (L) c.v. Maycrest) grafted on Nemaguard rootstock. Plants were grown on siliceous sand in 500-L pots and fertilized with a solution containing 15N enriched KNO3. During flowering and fruit set (March) approximately 7% of N found in new growth came from the fertilizer and the remainder came from the N stored in the old organs. Maximum N absorption took place during the periods of fruit ripening and maximal vegetative growth (May to August). This nitrogen was relocated from leaves to woody tissues and stored as reserve-N before leaf fall. In the following growth season reserve-N was used for flower development and new shoot growth. The N absorbed during plant dormancy was quite low and remained in the stem bark and roots mainly as soluble-N.  相似文献

Roots of annual crop plants are a major sink for carbon particularly during early, vegetative growth when up to one-half of all assimilated carbon may be translocated belowground. Flowering marks a particularly important change in resource allocation, especially in determinate species, with considerably less allocation to roots and, depending on environmental conditions, there may be insufficient for maintenance. Studies with 14C indicate the rapid transfer belowground of assimilates with typically 50% translocated in young cereal plants of which 50% is respired; exudation/rhizodeposition is generally <5% of the fixed carbon. Root: total plant mass decreases through the season and is affected by soil and atmospheric conditions. Limited water availability increased the allocation of 13C to roots of wheat grown in columns so that at booting 0.38 of shoot C (ignoring shoot respiration) was belowground compared to 0.31 in well-watered plants. Elevated CO2 (700 mol CO2 mol–1 air) increased the proportion of root:total mass by 55% compared with normal concentration, while increasing the air temperature by a mean of 3 °C decreased the proportion from 0.093 in the cool treatment to 0.055 in the warm treatment.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine partitioning within seeds of 14C-photoassimilates at three stages of seed development in two Phaseolus crosses — P. coccineus Lam. selfed, and P. coccineus x P. vulgaris L. Abortion of the interspecific embryos occurred when the seed reached 10 mm seed length. When expressed as sink strength (% dpm) or sink activity (% dmp/d.wt.) there were no differences in partitioning of 14C-photoassimilates when whole seeds were analyzed. If the seed was divided into seed coat, liquid endosperm, and embryo, the sink activity of the interspecific embryo was higher than that of the embryo in the selfed seed. Therefore, abortion of these interspecific Phaselus embryos appeared not to be caused by a lack of photoassimilates.Assistant Professor, Professors, respectively.Contribution from the Agr. Expt. Inflorescence leaves improve fruit set on sweet orange trees. We sought an explanation for this effect in terms of carbon demand by developing fruit versus potential supply from adjacent leaves. Our assessment was based upon measurements of fruit growth, leaf photosynthesis and 14C distribution patterns in plants grown under controlled conditions. Leafy inflorescences had sufficient foliar surface (1.24 dm2) and photosynthetic capacity (CO2 10.1 mg · dm-2· h-1) to support early development of fruits on the same shoot, and to make a substantial contribution towards subsequent growth. 14C-assimilates derived from new leaves were distributed towards adjacent fruit which showed strong competition for labelled substrate. By contrast, fruit borne on leafless inflorescences had to obtain all their assimilates from older leaves whose photosynthetic capacity (CO2 3.5–4.6 mg · dm-2· h-1) and individual area (0.2 dm2) were generally insufficient to wholly sustain fruit growth, so that a large number of old-leaves were needed; these fruit would be more susceptible to competition from other sinks.  相似文献

A natural grassland in northeastern China dominated by Leymus chinensis (Trin.) was subject to drought treatments to determine the seasonal dynamics in resource partitioning to shoot and storage organs in response to drought. The growing season was divided into six stages according to the phenology of L. chinensis. Plant samples of L. chinensis were collected at each stage to determine biomass, gross calorific value, relative water content, and key mineral contents of plant parts, including rhizomes, roots, leaves, and stems. Resource partitioning to shoot and storage organs as measured by biomass, gross calorific value, and N, K+, and Na+ contents varied significantly among phenologic stages. Drought treatment (natural precipitation, 50–60 % of field capacity) significantly reduced biomass, gross calorific value, relative water content of shoot, and N and K+ contents in both shoot and storage organs, but it enhanced rhizome : shoot ratio and Na+ content. A negative correlation in biomass, gross calorific value, and K+ and Na+ contents between shoot and storage organs was found throughout the growing season, which may have been accentuated by drought when soil moisture was limited. Our results indicate that resource partitioning to storage plays an important role in regulating plant growth of L. chinensis, especially under drought conditions.  相似文献

The dynamics of N uptake and N partitioning in peach (Prunus persica, Batsch) trees of a very early (cv. Flordastar) and a very late (cv. Tudia) fruit ripening varieties grown under a mediterranean climate was assessed during one season. Labelled N was applied to two-year old potted trees which were destructively harvested at regular intervals during the vegetative and reproductive cycle. Tree phenology as well as vegetative and reproductive growth of the two genotypes strongly differed: bud burst started in late January in Flordastar and late March in Tudia. Leaf senescence in Flordastar was almost complete by mid October, while Tudia still retained a significant fraction of leaves at the December harvest. Fruit yield averaged 4.0 and 6.9 kg tree–1 (fresh weight) in cv. Flordastar and Tudia, respectively, and fruit size was within commercial standards for the two genotypes. After growth resumption, shoot and fruit growth mainly relied on N remobilised from reserves, which accounted for 72–80% of total N in new growth. Nitrogen uptake by both genotypes was relatively low in the first month after bud burst, then was more rapid until the end of the season. Total labelled N uptake did not differ between the two genotypes and accounted on average for 65–70% of total N supplied. The kinetics of labelled N uptake were similar in the two varieties despite the great difference in the timing of their fruit ripening. Leaves were the main sink for N during much of the experimental period. The fruits, when present, also used a significant fraction of the absorbed N, which was almost constant until fruit ripening in Flordastar. Nitrogen partitioning to leaves declined progressively after summer, when a greater fraction of the absorbed N was recovered in the twigs, the trunk, the fine roots and especially in the coarse roots. The data provide evidence for guiding the kinetics of N supply to peach orchards under a Mediterranean climate.  相似文献

We compared the effect of p-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (p-CPA) and 1-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-3-phenylurea (CPPU) on parthenocarpic and seeded muskmelon (Cucumis melo) fruits in regards to fruit development and the transport of photoassimilates from leaves exposed to 14CO2 to the developing fruits. Ten days after anthesis (DAA), the fresh weight, total 14C-radioactivity and contents of 14C-sucrose and 14C-fructose were higher in the CPPU-induced parthenocarpic fruits than in seeded fruits. However, at 35 DAA, fresh weight and sucrose content in mesocarp, placenta and empty seeds of the parthenocarpic fruits were lower than in seeded fruits. Also, total 14C-radioactivity and 14C-sugar content of the parthenocarpic fruits were lower as well as the translocation rate of 14C-photoassimilates into these fruits. Application of p-CPA to the parthenocarpic fruits at 10 and 25 DAA increased fresh weight and sugar content. Moreover, these treatments elevated the total 14C-radioactivity, 14C-sucrose content and the translocation rate of 14C-photoassimilates. The 14C-radioactivity along the translocation pathway from leaf to petiole, stem, lateral shoot and peduncle showed a declining pattern but dramatically increased again in the fruits. These results suggest that the fruit's sink strength was regulated by the seed and enhanced by the application of p-CPA.  相似文献

Summary Translocation of 14C assimilates was studied on four different transport systems of Picea abies branches after induced activation in January. 14CO2 assimilation of terminal shoots for 48 h at 25° C resulted in phloem loading and basipetal transport of 14C photosynthate into the following, older shoot generations. 14C import was enhanced, when these older shoot generations were kept in the dark. Microautoradiographs of the labelled terminal shoots showed that 14C assimilates were exported from needles via sieve elements of the leaf traces and loaded into the latest increment of the axial secondary phloem. No 14C label appeared in the obliterated sieve cells or in the tracheids. In addition, 14C photosynthate accumulated densely in the chlorophyllous cells of the cortex and in cells of the resin ducts, indicating certain sink activity. In the darkened 2-year-old shoot, imported 14C photosynthate was concentrated in the functional secondary phloem, while some 14C label was unloaded into the latest xylem increment. When 6-year-old shoots were exposed to 14CO2 for 48 h in the light, 14C assimilates accumulated in the phloem of the leaf trace and in the latest increment of the axial secondary phloem. However, a substantial amount of radioactivity was unloaded into ray cells and phloem parenchyma cells. Thus, the presence of functioning phloem in needles and twigs of P. abies during winter allows long-distance translocation and radial distribution of assimilates according to existing source-sink relations.  相似文献

As competition for the limited water supply available for irrigation of horticultural crops increases, research into crop management practices that enhance drought resistance, plant water-use efficiency and plant growth when water supply is limited has become increasingly essential. This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of potassium (K) nutritional status on the drought resistance of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. cv. Leprechaun (Hibiscus). All the treatments were fertilized with Hoagland's nutrient solution, modified to supply K as K2SO4, at 0 mM K (K0), 2.5 mM K (K2.5), and 10 mM K (K10), under two irrigation regimes (drought stressed [DS] and non-drought stressed [non-DS]). Regular irrigation and fertigation were adopted for 54 days, and drought stress treatment (initiated on day 55) lasted for 21 days; while non-DS control plants continued to receive regular irrigation and fertigation. Following the 21-day drought stress period, plants were labeled with 86Rb+ to determine the percentage of post-drought stress live roots. Both K deficiency (K0) and drought stress reduced shoot growth, but drought stress increased root growth and thus the root:shoot ratio. At K0, plants were K-deficient and had the lowest leaf K, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, B, Mo and Al, and highest Ca concentrations. Although the percentage of live roots was decreased by drought stress, K2.5 and K10 plants (with similar percent live roots) had greater root survival ratio after drought treatment than the K-deficient plants. These observations indicate that adequate K nutrition can improve drought resistance and root longevity in Hibiscus rosa-sinensis.  相似文献

At Ruiru, Kenya, 14CO2 was fed to single leaves at different distances from the apex on branches of mature fruiting and non-fruiting trees of Coffea arabica on six occasions from the Short Rains (November) 1966 to the Long Rains (April-May) 1967. The location of 14C-labelled assimilates in the treated branches was determined 26 h later by autoradiography. The direction of movement of labelled assimilates indicated large seasonal differences in the relative sink strengths of the shoot tip, fruit and trunk-root systems. On vegetative trees the sink strength of trunk-roots was much smaller, as compared with the shoots, at the beginning of the Long Rains than at the end of the previous Short Rains or in the intervening dry season. Assimilate use by growing fruits did not alter the pattern of distribution of assimilates to the other sinks at the end of the Short Rains, but it did restrict assimilate movement to both shoot tips and trunk-roots at the_ beginning of the Long Rains. In the dry season, virtually all assimilates were utilized by growing fruits when these were present. Vegetative secondary shoots provided assimilates to growing fruits and trunk-roots at the end of the Short Rains and in the dry season. Some practical implications are noted.  相似文献

The allocation of carbon to shoots, roots, soil and rhizosphere respiration in barrel medic (Medicago truncatulaGaertn.) before and after defoliation was determined by growing plants in pots in a labelled atmosphere in a growth cabinet. Plants were grown in a 14CO2-labelled atmosphere for 30 days, defoliated and then grown in a 13CO2-labelled atmosphere for 19 days. Allocation of 14C-labelled C to shoots, roots, soil and rhizosphere respiration was determined before defoliation and the allocation of 14C and 13C was determined for the period after defoliation. Before defoliation, 38.4% of assimilated C was allocated below ground, whereas after defoliation it was 19.9%. Over the entire length of the experiment, the proportion of net assimilated carbon allocated below ground was 30.3%. Of this, 46% was found in the roots, 22% in the soil and 32% was recovered as rhizosphere respiration. There was no net translocation of assimilate from roots to new shoot tissue after defoliation, indicating that all new shoot growth arose from above-ground stores and newly assimilated carbon. The rate of rhizosphere respiration decreased immediately after defoliation, but after 8 days, was at comparable levels to those before defoliation. It was not until 14 days after defoliation that the amount of respiration from newly assimilated C (13C) exceeded that of C assimilated before defoliation (14C). This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The influx of K+(86Rb+) into intact roots of rye (Secale cereale L. cv. Rheidal) exposed to a differential temperature (DT) between the root (8° C) and shoot (20° C) is initially reduced compared with warm-grown (WG) controls with both shoot and root maintained at 20° C. Over a period of 3 d, however, K+-influx rates into DT plants are restored to levels similar to or greater than those of the WG controls, the absolute rates of K+ influx being strongly dependent upon the shoot/root ratio. Acclimation in DT plants results in a reduction of K+ influx into the apical (0–2 cm) region of the seminal root which is associated with a compensatory increase in K+ influx into the more mature, basal regions of the root. Values of V max and apparent K m for K+ influx into DT plants were similar to those for WG plants at assay temperatures of 8° C and 20° C except for an increase in the apparent K m at 8° C. The influx of K+ from solutions containing 0.6 mol·m-3 K+ into both WG and DT plants was found to be linearly related to assay temperature over the range 2–27° C, and the temperature sensitivity of K+ influx to be dependent upon shoot/root ratio. At high shoot/root ratios, the ratio of K+ influx at 20° C:K+ influx at 8° C for WG plants approached a minimum value of 1.9 whereas that for DT plants approached unity indicating that K+ influx into DT plants has a large temperature-insensitive component. Additionally, when plants were grown in solutions of low potassium concentration, K+ influx into DT plants was consistently greater than that into WG plants, in spite of having a greater root potassium concentration ([K+]int). This result indicates some change in the regulation of K+ influx by [K+]int in plants exposed to low root temperatures. We suggest that K+ influx into rye seedlings exposed to low root temperatures is regulated by the increased demand placed on the root system by a proportionally larger shoot and that the acclimation of K+ influx to low temperatures may be the result of an increased hydraulic conductivity of the root system.Abbreviations DT differential temperature pretreatment - [K+]int root potassium concentration - [K+]ext potassium concentration of nutrient medium - WG warm-grown pretreatment  相似文献

Maximum fruit growth potential, the growth attained by fruitswhen they are grown under optimal environmental conditions inthe presence of a non-limiting supply of resources, was estimatedfor two peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] cultivars that differin the timing of resource demand for reproductive growth. Maximumpotential fruit growth was estimated on trees that were heavilythinned at bloom. On these trees, resource availability exceededresource demand for fruit growth. For both cultivars, the mean dry weights of fruits grown onunthinned trees were approximately half the mean dry weightsof fruits grown on trees that were heavily thinned at bloom, indicating that fruit growth was source-limited on unthinnedtrees. Comparison of the seasonal patterns of relative growthrate of fruits on unthinned and heavily thinned trees indicatedthe source-limited fruit growth occurred during distinct periodsof the growing season. On the early maturing cultivar, source-limitedfruit growth occurred from 300 degree-days after bloom untilharvest (4·5-10 weeks after bloom). On the late maturingcultivar, source-limited fruit growth occurred from 200-900and 1600-1900 degree-days (3·5-12 and 18-20 weeks) afterbloom. Although the final dry weight of fruits on the early maturingcultivar was only half that of fruits on the late maturing cultivar, the potential net sink strength of fruits was significantlyhigher on the early than the late maturing cultivar throughoutthe entire growth period of the early maturing cultivar. Resourceavailability for fruit growth was similar on the early and latematuring cultivars, indicating that selection for early maturingfruits has not changed the patterns of resource availabilityfor fruit growth.Copyright 1995, 1999 Academic Press Maximum fruit growth potential, carbon economy, partitioning, resource availability, resource limitation, source-limited growth, sink activity, sink strength, growth analysis, relative growth rate, Prunus persica (L.) The sink mobilizing abillity is partially determined by sugar uptake rates of storage cells. Two synthetic growth regulators (Pix and BAS 106W) were tested for their effect on sucrose uptake in root tissue discs or glucose uptake in cell cultures of sugar beet. In tissue discs, uptake at the plasmalemma was determined by incubating the discs for 1 h in the presence of 5 mM sucrose and at the tonoplast for 4 h in the presence of 40 mM sucrose. Cell cultures were incubated for 1 h in the presence of 1 mM glucose. Pix (10 mg l–1) caused a 20% stimulation of active sucrose uptake at the plasmalemma. Active sucrose uptake at the tonoplast was increased 67% by 100 mg l–1 Pix. No effect of BAS 106W was observed on sucrose uptake in tissue discs. In cell cultures, a 65% enhancement of active glucose uptake was observed with both Pix and BAs 106W. When the bioregulators were applied to the root medium of seedlings, Pix but not BAS 106W resulted in increased root/shoot ratio, translocation of 14C-assimilates, and allocation of more biomass to the root sink. The data suggested that sugar transport and translocation may be used as biochemical criteria for rapid screening of effective yield enhancing bioregulators.  相似文献
