Strains of Salmonella enteritidis, Salm. typhimurium and Salm. virchow , carrying different numbers of plasmids, were examined for the ability to multiply in sera. Viable counts were performed to monitor the kinetics of growth of bacteria when in human, chicken and turkey sera. The presence of plasmids in Salm. enteritidis, Salm. typhimurium and Salm. virchow reduced considerably the ability of strains of these serotypes to multiply in serum. SDS-PAGE was used to show that growth of Salm. enteritidis in serum did not involve changes in outer membrane proteins or lipopolysaccharide. It was concluded that the carriage of plasmids may be disadvantageous for the survival in serum of certain common salmonella serotypes.  相似文献

An investigation was conducted to determine the vehicle of infection of an outbreak of food poisoning in a large metropolitan building early in 1988. A questionnaire was distributed to 700 people who had eaten in the building during the week of the outbreak, and attack rates for specific food were calculated. Food and stool samples, environmental samples, and eggs and environmental swabs from the egg suppliers were examined microbiologically. Altogether 474 questionnaires were returned, 120 people reporting gastrointestinal illness. The illness was significantly associated with foods containing mayonnaise. Salmonella typhimurium definitive type 49 was isolated from 76 of the 84 stool samples containing salmonella and from five of the eight samples taken from the chicken house of the main egg supplier. Mayonnaise was probably the vehicle of infection, which was caused by S typhimurium definitive type 49.  相似文献

Although there have been several reports on the efficacy assessment of a Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis vaccine against intestinal and parenchymatous organ diseases of laying hens, no public health risk characterization of its long-term effect on eggs has been reported. In this study, we attempted to assess the public health effect of an inactivated S. enterica serovar Enteritidis vaccine against serovar Enteritidis contamination of chicken eggs. We analyzed serovar Enteritidis isolation test results from four windowless farms in which inactivated-vaccine administration was initiated based on the sanitary monitoring program of a farm. When flocks with and without S. enterica serovar Enteritidis vaccine treatments were mixed, the application of an inactivated serovar Enteritidis vaccine decreased the most probable number (MPN) of bacteria by at least 100-fold in broken (liquid) egg samples positive for serovar Enteritidis, although a statistical difference between those MPNs could not be obtained. The isolation frequency after the vaccine application was less than 1/10 (P < 0.01). No S. enterica serovar Enteritidis bacteria were isolated approximately 1 year after all of the chickens had received the inactivated serovar Enteritidis vaccine. It was suggested that an adequate administration of an inactivated serovar Enteritidis vaccine reduced the contamination risk of eggs (the number of isolated serovar Enteritidis cells and detection frequency) compared to the contamination risk of eggs laid by nonvaccinated hens.  相似文献

Salmonella virchow infection in man is usually sporadic and is little known in Britain. We report an outbreak of 21 cases in the Manchester area. The source of infection was believed to be chickens bought at different shops. Symptoms were typhoidal or septicaemic.  相似文献

Salmonella carrier state (42.6%-S. enteritidis and 34.4%-S. dublin) was demonstrated in subjects after acute salmonellosis as well as in healthy persons infected with salmonella as a result of occupational exposure to poultry (8.8% in humans exposed to chickens and 6.1% in those exposed to ducks) and sheep (2.8%). The carrier state was accompanied by intermittent pain in the epigastrium, diminished appetite, diarrhoea etc. Most of the carrier subjects with a history of salmonellosis exhibited, upon rectoromanoscopy, a varying degree of proctosigmoiditsi. The etiological role of S. typhimurium was proved beyond doubt, as well as its ability to cause salmonellosis outbursts, sporadic cases of the disease and the carrier state. When large industrial facilities specializing in poultry processing were investigated, the salmonella carrier state was revealed in practically healthy poultry--in 16% of chickens and 12% of ducks. The salmonella organisms isolated from carrier persons had, with some exceptions, typical properties, being virulent in that they caused death of experimental animals, seeded their internal organs and induced pathogenicity-associated enzymes. Multiple resistance to antibiotics was demonstrated in salmonella isolated from poultry; also determined was its plasmid nature. Pronounced resistance of the above salmonella subtypes to tetracycline-related antibiotics and streptomycin may be due to the fact that these drugs are used in poultry raising.  相似文献

An outbreak of gastroenteritis due to Salmonella virchow occurred in a maternity hospital in the Midlands in October–November 1968. Twenty-six babies and six mothers were infected. Fifteen of the babies had diarrhoea and 10 of these were in the special care baby unit The only fatal case was that of an infant with gross congenital malformations.The outbreak followed the admission of a patient to the delivery suite who was subsequently shown to be a symptomless excreter of S. virchow. A major factor in the spread of this organism is thought to have been heavy environmental contamination resulting from diarrhoea due to infection of her newborn baby.  相似文献

The recognition and investigation of an outbreak of food poisoning in 1982 due to chocolate contaminated with Salmonella napoli enabled the food that carried the salmonella to be identified and four fifths of the implicated consignment of chocolate to be withdrawn. The economic benefits of prompt intervention in the outbreak have been assessed. The cost of the outbreak was over 0.5 pounds m. It is estimated that five deaths were prevented by the intervention and that 185 admissions to hospital and 29,000 cases of S napoli enteritis were avoided. This successful investigation yielded a 3.5-fold rate of return to the public sector and a 23.3-fold return to society on an investment in public health surveillance. A methodology is described that can be used to estimate the benefits of early intervention in outbreaks of foodborne illness and topics for further research are suggested. It is concluded that public health authorities and industry have much to gain by collaborating in the research into the design of cost effective programmes to prevent foodborne infections.  相似文献

AIMS: The prevalence and types of salmonella in broiler chickens during transportation and during slaughter and dressing were studied. This was part of a comprehensive investigation of salmonellas in two UK poultry companies, which aimed to find the origins and mechanisms of salmonella contamination. METHODS AND RESULTS: Salmonellas were isolated using cultural methods. Serovars of Salmonella detected during rearing were usually also found in a small proportion of birds on the day of slaughter and on the carcasses at various points during processing. There was little evidence of salmonellas spreading to large numbers of carcasses during processing. Many serovars found in the feedmills or hatcheries were also detected in the birds during rearing and/or slaughter. Transport crates were contaminated with salmonellas after washing and disinfection. CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of salmonellas fell in the two companies during this survey. A small number of serovars predominated in the processing plants of each company. These serovars originated from the feed mills. Reasons for transport crate contamination were: (1) inadequate cleaning, resulting in residual faecal soiling; (2) disinfectant concentration and temperature of disinfectant too low; (3) contaminated recycled flume water used to soak the crates. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Efforts to control salmonella infection in broilers need to concentrate on crate cleaning and disinfection and hygiene in the feed mills.  相似文献

Pheasants, quail and turkeys from different geographical locations were surveyed for the presence of eight 7S Ig and four IgM chicken allotypes. No IgM and only two 7S Ig allotypes were detected. Chicken 7S Ig allotypic specificity G-1.7 cross-reacted with pheasant and turkey isotypic specificities, and was absent in quail. The other determinant (G-1.9) cross-reacted with an allotype found only in turkeys and golden pheasants. These data suggest that G-1.7 and G-1.9 are probably phylogenetically ancient determinants and that polymorphism of chicken immunoglobulins arose after divergence of chickens from other phasianoid birds. Based on the allotypic and isotypic analysis of the 7S Ig antigenic determinants, turkey 7S Ig was as closely related to chicken 7S Ig as was pheasant 7S Ig. Jungle fowl, the ancestor of chickens, had most of the chicken 7S Ig and IgM allotypes present as polymorphic markers.  相似文献

Effect of Chlortetracycline Feeding on the Salmonella Reservoir in Chickens   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
An experimental model was developed to study the influence of antibiotic feeding on the salmonella reservoir in chickens. This model had the features of being very sensitive, allowing for the recovery of very low numbers of infecting salmonella, and, as was the case in the first experiment, closely simulated natural conditions in permitting the spread of salmonella from non-medicated carrier birds to their penmates. The data from both experiments demonstrate clearly that feeding a sub-therapeutic level of chlortetracycline did not increase the numbers of salmonella being shed into the environment. In fact, the salmonella pool was significantly reduced in chickens fed chlortetracycline at 200 g/ton. In the first experiment, conducted under more natural conditions, not only did the continuous use of chlortetracycline markedly reduce the spread of salmonella to a non-inoculated population of broiler chickens but it failed to cause the emergence of chlortetracycline-resistant salmonella. In the second experiment, where medicated feed was administered 6 days before the birds were individually infected with large numbers of salmonella, resistant organisms did appear; however these conditions did not lead to increased numbers of salmonella being shed.  相似文献

本研究分析比较了农家家养鸡与大型养殖场鸡肠道菌群组成及抗四环素抗性基因在肠道菌群中的分布情况。通过454焦磷酸法对细菌16S rRNA V3区进行测序来分析肠道菌群的组成;用平板琼脂法筛选四环素耐药菌株,对其16S rRNA基因全长测序,并与RDP (Ribosomal Database Project)数据库比对进行菌种鉴定;聚合酶链反应(polymerase chain reaction,PCR)检测常见四环素耐药基因。家养鸡粪便中菌群香农多样性指数为5.321±0.590,养殖场鸡为4.398±0.440,前者显著大于后者(Mann-Whitney U test,P=0.008)。从家养鸡和养殖场鸡粪便中随机分离到69株和65株四环素耐药菌株,后者四环素耐药菌的种类多于前者。家养鸡较养殖场鸡的肠道菌群更具多样性,而抗生素抗性基因在养殖场鸡的肠道菌群中分布更广泛。结果表明,不同饲养方式对鸡的肠道菌群有影响,对抗生素抗性基因的分布也有一定影响。  相似文献

The antagonistic effect exerted towards Salmonella typhimurium by the flora issued from conventional chickens was studied in gnotobiotic animals. In germfree chickens and mice inoculated with S. typhimurium, the highest bacterial counts were observed in ceca, and were not significantly different in either host. The protection afforded by the inoculation of cecal flora issued from a conventional chicken was more effective when this flora was inoculated first into germfree chickens than when it was given only after inoculation with S. typhimurium. Administration of a cecal flora from a 15-day-old chick to gnotobiotic mice and chicken resulted in the inhibition of a further intestinal colonization by S. typhimurium in both hosts. Sixteen strains were isolated among the predominant populations of the fecal flora from chicken flora recipient mice. Association of 14 strains of strictly anaerobic bacteria with 2 strains of Escherichia coli and Streptococcus faecium only decreased the number of S. typhimurium in the ileum of gnotobiotic mice, but not in their cecum. Anaerobe cultures were obtained from 10(-6) and 10(-8) dilutions prepared from the fecal flora of gnotobiotic recipient mice. Antagonistic bacteria were present only in cultures from the 10(-6) dilution. Cecal concentrations of volatile fatty acids were shown not to be the sole factor implicated in the antagonistic effect against S. typhimurium.  相似文献

The distribution of oncornavirus DNA sequences in various tissues of normal chickens and of chickens with leukemia or kidney tumors induced by avian myeloblastosis virus (AMV) was analyzed by DNA-RNA hybridization using 35S AMV RNA as a probe. All the tissues from normal chickens which were tested contained the same average cellular concentration of endogenous oncornavirus DNA. In contrast, different tissues from lekemic chickens and from chickens bearing kidney tumors contained different concentrations of AMV homologous DNA: in some tissues there was no increase whereas other tissues acquired additional AMV-specific DNA sequences. The increase was the greatest in tissues which can become neoplastic after infection, such as myeloblasts, erythrocytes, and kidney cells. It was directly demonstrated that DNA from AMV-induced kidney tumor contains AMV sequences which are absent in DNA from normal cells. A similar finding had been previously obtained with leukemic cells (15). 3H-labeled 35S RNA from purified AMV was exhaustively hybridized with an excess of normal chicken DNA to remove all the viral RNA sequences which are complementary to DNA from uninfected cells. The 3H-labeled RNA which failed to hybridize was isolated by hydroxylapatite column chromatography which separates DNA-RNA hybrids from single-stranded RNA. The residual RNA hybridized to chicken kidney tumor DNA but did not rehybridize with normal chicken DNA.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To determine the source of indigenous sporadic infection with Salmonella enteritidis phage type 4. DESIGN--Case-control study of primary sporadic cases identified by the Public Health Laboratory Service between 1 August and 30 September 1988. SETTING--PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, Division of Enteric Pathogens, 11 PHLS laboratories, and 42 local authority environmental health departments in England. SUBJECTS--232 Patients (cases) with confirmed primary sporadic infection, for 160 of whom (88 female) (median age 30 years, age range 4 months to 85 years) data were obtained by questionnaire about consumption of fresh eggs, egg products, precooked chicken, and minced meat in the three days and one week before onset of the symptoms. Up to three controls, matched for neighbourhood, age, and sex (if aged greater than 11 years), were asked the same questions for the same calendar period. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE--Association of primary sporadic infection with consumption of suspected food items. RESULTS--Illness due to S enteritidis phage type 4 was significantly associated with consumption of raw shell egg products (homemade mayonnaise, ice cream, and milk drinks containing eggs) (matched p = 0.02) and shop bought sandwiches containing mayonnaise (matched p = 0.00004) or eggs (matched p = 0.02). Illness was also significantly associated with eating lightly cooked eggs (unmatched p = 0.02), but not soft boiled eggs, and precooked hot chicken (matched p = 0.006). Reported consumption of eggs was not appreciably different between cases and controls before or after the median date of interview. CONCLUSIONS--Fresh shell eggs, egg products, and precooked hot chicken are vehicles of S enteritidis phage type 4 infection in indigenous sporadic cases. Public health education and reduction in contamination of eggs and infection of poultry with S enteritidis are needed to reduce the incidence of human infection.  相似文献

The causes of the simultaneous rise of salmonellosis morbidity induced by S. enteritidis among the population of three towns in the Perm region were studied. The study revealed the leading role of eggs and chicken meat as factors contributing to the transfer of this infection to the population of different territories, commonly supplied with the products of one poultry plant. The contamination of eggs and chickens with S. enteritidis occurred at the plant due to Salmonella infection of chickens, parallel with the use of nonbalanced mixed fodder, originally intended for feeding swine. Analysis of the epidemic and epizootic processes of Salmonella infection in this epidemic situation made it possible to reliably establish the factors contributing to the transfer of the infective agent and the site of contamination.  相似文献

In the interests of food safety and public health, plants and their compounds are now re-emerging as an alternative approach to treat gastrointestinal diseases in chickens. Here, we studied the impact of the edible medicinal plant, B. pilosa, on growth performance, gut bacteria and coccidiosis in chickens. First, we found that B. pilosa significantly elevated body weight gain and lowered feed conversion ratio in chickens. Next, we showed that B. pilosa reduced cecal damage as evidenced by increased hemorrhage, villus destruction and decreased villus-to-crypt ratio in chicken ceca. We also performed pyrosequencing of the PCR ampilcons based on the 16S rRNA genes of gut bacteria in chickens. Metagenomic analysis indicated that the chicken gut bacteria belonged to 6 phyla, 6 classes, 6 orders, 9 families, and 8 genera. More importantly, we found that B. pilosa affected the composition of bacteria. This change in bacteria composition was correlated with body weight gain, feed conversion ratio and gut pathology in chickens. Collectively, this work suggests that B. pilosa has beneficial effects on growth performance and protozoan infection in chickens probably via modulation of gut bacteria.  相似文献

The use of antibiotics in food animals is of public health concern, because resistant zoonotic pathogens can be transmitted to humans. Furthermore, global trade with food may rapidly spread multi-resistant pathogens between countries and even continents. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether imported chicken meat and meat from locally reared chicken are potential sources for human exposure to multi resistant Escherichia coli isolates. 188 samples from imported and locally produced chicken meat were sampled and analyzed. 153 bacteria isolates were successfully cultured and identified as E. coli using MALDI-ToF. Of these 109 isolates were from meat whereas the remaining 44 were isolated from the cloaca of locally reared live chickens. Antimicrobial susceptibility test was done on the identified E. coli isolates. Additionally, beta-lactamases production (ESBL and/or AmpC) were phenotypically confirmed on all isolates showing resistance to cefpodoxime. Beta-lactamase producing (BLP) E. coli meat isolates were further genotyped. Antimicrobial resistance to four antibiotic markers with highest resistance was detected more frequently in isolates from local chickens compared to imported chickens (tetracycline 88.9% vs. 57.5%, sulphonamide 75.0% vs. 46.6%, ampicillin 69.4% vs. 61.6% and trimethoprim 66.7% vs. 38.4%). Beta-lactamase production was found in 29 E. coli meat isolates, with 56.9% of them being multiple drug resistant (≥ 3). The predominant phylogroup identified was B1 followed by A and D, with similar distribution among the isolates from meat of locally reared chickens and imported chickens. Beta-lactamase producing genotype bla CTX-M-15 (50%; 10/20) was the most frequently drug resistant gene detected. More BLP E. coli isolates were found in imported chicken meat compared to locally reared chickens, demonstrating that these isolates may be spreading through food trade. In conclusion, both imported and locally produced chicken meats are potential sources for human exposure to BLP E. coli.  相似文献

In June of 2012, an H7N3 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus was identified as the cause of a severe disease outbreak in commercial laying chicken farms in Mexico. The purpose of this study was to characterize the Mexican 2012 H7N3 HPAI virus (A/chicken/Jalisco/CPA1/2012) and determine the protection against the virus conferred by different H7 inactivated vaccines in chickens. Both adult and young chickens intranasally inoculated with the virus became infected and died at between 2 and 4 days postinoculation (p.i.). High virus titers and viral replication in many tissues were demonstrated at 2 days p.i. in infected birds. The virus from Jalisco, Mexico, had high sequence similarity of greater than 97% to the sequences of wild bird viruses from North America in all eight gene segments. The hemagglutinin gene of the virus contained a 24-nucleotide insert at the hemagglutinin cleavage site which had 100% sequence identity to chicken 28S rRNA, suggesting that the insert was the result of nonhomologous recombination with the host genome. For vaccine protection studies, both U.S. H7 low-pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses and a 2006 Mexican H7 LPAI virus were tested as antigens in experimental oil emulsion vaccines and injected into chickens 3 weeks prior to challenge. All H7 vaccines tested provided ≥90% protection against clinical disease after challenge and decreased the number of birds shedding virus and the titers of virus shed. This study demonstrates the pathological consequences of the infection of chickens with the 2012 Mexican lineage H7N3 HPAI virus and provides support for effective programs of vaccination against this virus in poultry.  相似文献

S ummary . When sheep were held in abattoir pens, the fleece became contaminated with salmonellae within 1 day even when there was less than 1 salmonella/g of soil. Salmonellae were first shed in the faeces after 2–3 days. Both the percentage of infected sheep and the number of salmonellae/g of faeces subsequently increased rapidly. Contamination of fleece and carcasses increased with time and with the degree to which the pens were contaminated. The fleece appeared to be a significant source of salmonella contamination of the carcass.  相似文献
