Efferent activity was investigated in the phrenic nerve during startle reflex manifesting as somatic nerve discharges (lower intercostal nerves and the nerve endings) in chloralose anesthetized cats. Inhibition (usually of short duration, lasting 23–36 msec) of inspiration activity was found to be the main component of response in the phrenic nerve in the shaping of "low threshold" startle reflex produced by acoustic and tactile stimuli and stimulation of low threshold peripheral afferents. Reflex discharge prevailed amongst the response patterns produced in the phrenic nerve by stimulating high threshold afferents, i.e., early (propriospinal) and late (suprasegmental, arising from stimulating intercostal nerve) or late only (when stimulating the hindlimb nerves). Two patterns of late response could be distinguished, one on inspiration (found in roughly 3 out of 4 experiments) and other on exhalation — the respiratory homologs of somatic startle reflex. Response pattern is described throughout the respiratory cycle. Structure and respiratory modulation of reflex responses produced in the phrenic nerve by stimulating bulbar respiratory structure are also examined. Possible neurophysiological mechanisms underlying phrenic response during the shaping of startle reflex are discussed.A. A. VIP and noncholinergic vasodilatation in rabbit submandibular gland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of parasympathetic nerve activation on rabbit submandibular gland (SMG) blood flow and saliva secretion were studied before and after systemic administration of atropine or hexamethonium. The parasympathetic fibers were stimulated electrically (2 and 15 Hz, 10 V, 1 msec) at the plexus around the submandibular salivary duct or at the chorda lingual nerve. In untreated animals, stimulation of parasympathetic fibers caused a frequency-dependent increase of salivary secretion and blood flow in the SMG. Atropine treatment completely abolished saliva secretion at 2 Hz and 15 Hz and the increase in SMG blood flow during stimulation at 2 Hz. Although atropine significantly reduced the vasodilatory response at 15 Hz, the highest blood flow measured under such circumstances was still about 2.5 times the prestimulation value. After hexamethonium administration no blood flow increase or saliva secretion was seen upon chorda lingual stimulation. The concentration of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-like immunoreactivity in the venous effluent of the SMG increased during nerve stimulation. Atropine significantly reduced, and hexamethonium abolished this VIP-output elicited by parasympathetic nerve stimulation. Local infusion of VIP, peptide histidine isoleucine (PHI) and substance P all caused atropine-resistant vasodilation but no salivation. The present data suggest that VIP and possibly PHI play a role in the atropine-resistant vasodilatation in rabbit submandibular gland elicited by parasympathetic nerve stimulation. The contribution of sensory mediators such as substance P released by stimulation of afferent nerves in the chorda lingual nerve to the salivary and vasodilatory responses seems to be of minor importance in the rabbit submandibular gland.  相似文献

Several investigations have shown that the vagal nerve can affect the reflex responses of the masticatory muscles acting at level either of trigeminal motoneurons or of the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MTN). The present experiments have been devoted to establish the origin of the vagal afferent fibres involved in modulating the masseteric reflex. In particular, the gastric vagal afferents were taken into consideration and selective stimulations of such fibres were performed in rabbit. Conditioning electrical stimulation of truncus vagalis ventralis (TVV) reduced the excitability of the MTN cells as shown by a decrease of the antidromic response recorded from the semilunar ganglion and elicited by MTN single-shock electrical stimulation. Sympathetic and cardiovascular influences were not involved in these responses. Mechanical stimulation of gastric receptors, by means of gastric distension, clearly diminished the amplitude of twitch tension of masseteric reflex and inhibited the discharge frequency of proprioceptive MTN units. The effect was phasic and depended upon the velocity of distension. Thus the sensory volleys originating from rapid adapting receptors reach the brain stem through vagal afferents and by means of a polysynaptic connection inhibits the masseteric reflex at level of MTN cells.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that blockade of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and non-NMDA receptors on medullary lateral tegmental field (LTF) neurons would reduce the sympathoexcitatory responses elicited by electrical stimulation of vagal, trigeminal, and sciatic afferents, posterior hypothalamus, and midbrain periaqueductal gray as well as by activation of arterial chemoreceptors with intravenous NaCN. Bilateral microinjection of a non-NMDA receptor antagonist into LTF of urethane-anesthetized cats significantly decreased vagal afferent-evoked excitatory responses in inferior cardiac and vertebral nerves to 29 +/- 8 and 24 +/- 6% of control (n = 7), respectively. Likewise, blockade of non-NMDA receptors significantly reduced chemoreceptor reflex-induced increases in inferior cardiac (from 210 +/- 22 to 129 +/- 13% of control; n = 4) and vertebral nerves (from 253 +/- 41 to 154 +/- 20% of control; n = 7) and mean arterial pressure (from 39 +/- 7 to 21 +/- 5 mmHg; n = 8). Microinjection of muscimol, but not an NMDA receptor antagonist, caused similar attenuation of these excitatory responses. Sympathoexcitatory responses to the other stimuli were not attenuated by microinjection of a non-NMDA receptor antagonist or muscimol into LTF. In fact, excitatory responses elicited by stimulation of trigeminal, and in some cases sciatic, afferents were enhanced. These data reveal two new roles for the LTF in control of sympathetic nerve activity in cats. One, LTF neurons are involved in mediating sympathoexcitation elicited by activation of vagal afferents and arterial chemoreceptors, primarily via activation of non-NMDA receptors. Two, non-NMDA receptor-mediated activation of other LTF neurons tonically suppresses transmission in trigeminal-sympathetic and sciatic-sympathetic reflex pathways.  相似文献

We investigated the role of parasympathetic reflex vasodilation in the regulation of the cerebral hemodynamics, and whether GABAA receptors modulate the response. We examined the effects of activation of the parasympathetic fibers through trigeminal afferent inputs on blood flow in the internal carotid artery (ICABF) and the cerebral blood vessels (rCBF) in parietal cortex in urethane-anesthetized rats. Electrical stimulation of the central cut end of the lingual nerve (LN) elicited intensity- and frequency-dependent increases in ICABF that were independent of changes in external carotid artery blood flow. Increases in ICABF were elicited by LN stimulation regardless of the presence or absence of sympathetic innervation. The ICABF increases evoked by LN stimulation were almost abolished by the intravenous administration of hexamethonium (10 mg kg?1) and were reduced significantly by atropine administration (0.1 mg kg?1). Although the LN stimulation alone had no significant effect on rCBF, LN stimulation in combination with a blocker of the GABAA receptor pentylenetetrazole increased the rCBF markedly. This increase in rCBF was reduced significantly by the administration of hexamethonium and atropine. These observations indicate that the increases in both ICABF and rCBF are evoked by parasympathetic activation via the trigeminal-mediated reflex. The rCBF increase evoked by LN stimulation is thought to be limited by the GABAA receptors in the central nervous system. These results suggest that the parasympathetic reflex vasodilation and its modulation mediated by GABA receptors within synaptic transmission in the brainstem are involved in the regulation of the cerebral hemodynamics during trigeminal afferent inputs.  相似文献

American Bullfrogs, Rana catesbiana, immobilized with suxamethonium chloride (20 mg/kg b. w., i. p.), were used. By stimulating the glossopharyngeal (IX) nerve, reflex activities, composed of early (10-20 ms in latency) and late (greater than 20 ms) components, were evoked in both protoractor branch (P. br.) and retractor branch (R. br.) of the ipsilateral hypoglossal (XII) nerve. Contralateral IXth nerve stimulation increased the reflex activities of both components in the P. br. elicited ipsilaterally by the homonymous nerve. Whereas, it increased the reflex activities of the early component in the R. br. but, decreased that of the late component. On the other hand, stimulation of P. br. in the contralateral XIIth nerve increased the activities of both components in the P. br. and those of the late component in the R. br., but did not affect the activities of the early component in the R. br. The time course of these effects was similar to that by contralateral IXth nerve stimulation. The present findings strongly suggest the existence of afferent fibers in the XIIth nerve.  相似文献

Summary The role of substance P in the regulation of secretion from sustentacular cells, Bowman's glands and deep glands in the amphibian olfactory mucosa was investigated using immunohistochemical, electrophysiological, and pharmacological methods. Substance P-like immunoreactive varicose fibers extended through the olfactory epithelium, terminating at or near the surface. In addition, immunoreactive varicose fibers innervated Bowman's glands, deep glands, and blood vessels in the lamina propria. Innervation of Bowman's gland was sparse, with fibers terminating on basal acinar cell membranes; deep gland innervation was abundant, with fibers often extending between acinar cells almost to the lumen. Stimulation of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve resulted in slow potentials recorded at the surface of the olfactory epithelium. When the olfactory mucosae from trigeminal-stimulated animals were examined histologically, morphological signs of secretory activity were observed, suggesting that substance P was released from the trigeminal nerve terminals. Topical application of 10-5 to 10-3 mol substance P resulted in morphological signs of secretion that were very similar to those seen as a result of trigeminal stimulation. Thus, substance P released from trigeminal fibers may modulate secretory activity within the olfactory mucosa.  相似文献

A stretch of the walls of the thoracic aorta, performed in vagotomized cats without obstructing aortic flow, induces increases in heart rate, myocardial contractility, and arterial pressure. These reflex responses are still present after high spinal section. Cats under chloralose-urethane anesthesia were vagotomized and one carotid sinus was isolated and perfused with arterial blood at constant flow. The contralateral carotid sinus nerve and both aortic nerves were sectioned. A stretch of the walls of the thoracic aorta between the 7th and 10th intercostal arteries induced a reflex increase in mean arterial pressure 29 +/- 2 mmHg (mean +/- SE). Stepwise increases of carotid sinus pressure (CSP) or electrical stimulation of the carotid sinus nerve induced stepwise decreases of this reflex response. At maximal baroreceptor stimulation (CSP 212 +/- 9 mmHg) the reflex response to aortic stretch was reduced by 42%. These experiments show that this spinal cardiovascular reflex is at least partially under the inhibitory control of the baroreceptor input.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of water swallowing, pharyngeal stimulation, and oropharyngeal anesthesia on corticobulbar and craniobulbar projections to human swallowing musculature. Changes in pathway excitability were measured via electromyography from swallowed intraluminal pharyngeal and esophageal electrodes to motor cerebral and trigeminal nerve magnetic stimulation. After both water swallowing and pharyngeal stimulation, pharyngoesophageal corticobulbar excitability increased (swallowing: pharynx = 59 +/- 12%, P < 0.001; esophagus = 45 +/- 20%, P < 0.05; pharyngeal stimulation: pharynx = 76 +/- 19%, P < 0.001; esophagus = 45 +/- 23%, P = 0.05), being early with swallowing but late with stimulation. By comparison, craniobulbar excitability increased early after swallowing but remained unaffected by pharyngeal stimulation. After anesthesia, both corticobulbar (pharynx =-24 +/- 10%, P < 0.05; esophagus = -28 +/- 7%, P < 0.01) and craniobulbar excitability showed a late decrease. Thus swallowing induces transient early facilitation of corticobulbar and craniobulbar projections, whereas electrical stimulation promotes delayed facilitation mainly in cortex. With removal of input, both corticobulbar and craniobulbar projections show delayed inhibition, implying a reduction in motoneuron and/or cortical activity.  相似文献

1. The release of growth hormone from isolated fragments of rat anterior pituitary tissue incubated in vitro was studied by employing a double-antibody radioimmunoassay. 2. In the absence of added stimuli, two phases of hormone release could be distinguished, an early phase of 2h duration and a subsequent late phase. In the early phase, hormone release was rapid but could be significantly decreased by calcium depletion and by 2,4-dinitrophenol whereas the rate of release in the late phase was uninfluenced by these incubation conditions. These results have been interpreted as indicating the existence of a secretory component in the early phase of release. 3. In subsequent experiments, the effects of various agents on the rate of hormone output during the late phase of incubation were investigated. Hormone release was increased by theophylline and by dibutyryl cyclic AMP (N(6)-2'-O-dibutyryl-adenosine 3':5'-cyclic monophosphate), the response to both of these agents being related to the concentration of the stimulant employed. 4. The stimulation of growth hormone output by theophylline was significantly decreased by calcium deprivation and by 2,4-dinitrophenol. The response to dibutyryl cyclic AMP was diminished by 2,4-dinitrophenol, iodoacetate and 2-deoxyglucose but not by malonate or colchicine. 5. Arginine, beta-hydroxybutyrate, albumin-bound palmitate and variation in the glucose concentration of the incubation medium over a wide range were without any statistically significant effect on the rate of hormone release from either control pituitary fragments or those subject to secretory stimulation by dibutyryl cyclic AMP. 6. It is suggested that the regulation of growth hormone secretion is mediated by cyclic AMP (adenosine 3':5'-cyclic monophosphate). The secretion observed in response to cyclic AMP requires the presence of ionized calcium and a source of metabolic energy but is independent of pituitary protein synthesis de novo. The integrity of the glycolytic pathway of glucose metabolism appears to be essential for cyclic AMP-stimulated growth hormone secretion to occur.  相似文献

The effects of severing the spinal trigeminal tract and its caudal nucleus on high-threshold jaw-opening reflex elicited by tooth pulp stimulation were investigated during experiments on cats under chloralose-Nembutal anesthesia. Low-threshold jaw-opening reflex produced by stimulating the A--infraorbital nerve at an intensity 2–3 thresholds in relation to the most excitable fibers on this nerve was also observed, as well as suppression of these reflexes induced by central gray matter stimulation. It was found that spinal trigeminal tract section produces a 8–52% increase in high-threshold reflex. The amplitude of low-threshold reflex either remained unchanged or showed a slight tendency to rise or fall. Brief stimulation of the central gray matter produced a 100% decrease in high-threshold reflex in intact animals compared with a 40–60% decrease after section of the trigeminal tract. Protracted stimulation of the central gray brought about an 80% decline in high-threshold reflex in intact animals as against 25–30% after section. The degree to which brief stimulation of the central gray produced depression of low-threshold stimulation remained unchanged by trigeminal tract section. Protracted stimulation of the central gray matter brought about a 25–50% reduction in low-threshold reflex in intact animals and a reduction of 75% in three animals and 15–20% in four animals. This implied that the caudal nucleus of the spinal trigeminal tract exerts a more substantial influence on the process of high- than low-threshold reflex inhibition when the central gray matter is stimulated.A. We have exploited the segregation of motor and sensory axons into peripheral nerve sub-compartments to examine spinal reflex interactions in anaesthetized stingrays. Single, supra-maximal electrical stimuli delivered to segmental sensory nerves elicited compound action potentials in the motor nerves of the stimulated segment and in rostral and caudal segmental motor nerves. Compound action potentials elicited in segmental motor nerves by single stimuli delivered to sensory nerves were increased severalfold by prior stimulation of adjacent sensory nerves. This facilitation of the segmental reflex produced by intense conditioning stimuli decreased as it was applied to more remote segments, to approximately the same degree in up to seven segments in the rostral and caudal direction. In contrast, an asymmetric response was revealed when test and conditioning stimuli were delivered to different nerves, neither of which was of the same segment as the recorded motor nerve: in this configuration, conditioning volleys generally inhibited the responses of motoneurons to stimuli delivered to more caudally located sensory nerves. This suggests that circuitry subserving trans-segmental interactions between spinal afferents is present in stingrays and that interneuronal connections attenuate the influence that subsequent activity in caudal primary afferents can have on the motor elements.  相似文献

We obtained reproducible cortical evoked potentials (EPs) in response to electrical stimulation of the rectum with 1 Hz frequency. We found 2 distinctly different EPs in response to rectal stimulation. In 5 females, the EP had an early onset latency (mean 26 msec) with multiple positive and negative peaks. In 10 females, the EP had a later onset latency (mean 52 msec) and a trifid configuration, having a very prominent negative peak. The early onset EPs after rectal stimulation appeared very similar to the wave form of the cortical EPs recorded after pudendal nerve stimulation. Finding similar interpeak latencies in the early onset EP after rectal stimulation and the EP after pudendal nerve stimulation suggests that either the same pathway was used or that rectal stimulation also stimulated the pudendal nerve. It appears that we stimulated visceral afferents when we recorded late onset EPs, because the large EP amplitude declined rapidly with faster stimulation rates and also with greater number of averaging, and the sensation threshold was very unstable, all different to somatosensory EPs.  相似文献

The present study was designed to investigate 1) whether parasympathetic reflex vasodilatation occurs in the submandibular gland (SMG) in deeply urethan-anesthetized, cervically vagotomized, and sympathectomized rats when the central cut end of the lingual nerve (LN) is electrically stimulated and 2) to what extent the neural mechanisms underlying such responses are the same as those involved in the response to direct stimulation of the chorda-LN (CLN). Stimulation of each nerve separately elicited a marked blood flow increase in SMG. Section of the chorda tympani abolished the SMG blood flow response but had no effect on the lip blood flow increase evoked by LN stimulation. Section of the CLN abolished the SMG blood flow increases evoked by stimulation of either nerve. The SMG blood flow increases (regardless of whether they were evoked by LN or CLN stimulation) were markedly reduced by the autonomic cholinergic ganglion blocker hexamethonium. The present study demonstrates that a parasympathetic reflex vasodilator mechanism is present in the rat SMG and that it can express its effects under deep general anesthesia.  相似文献

The neural generators of the somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) elicited by electrical stimulation of the median nerve were studied in man and in rhesus monkeys. Recordings from the cuneate nucleus were compared to the far-field potentials recorded from electrodes placed on the scalp. It was found that the shape of the response from the surface of the human cuneate nucleus to stimulation of the median nerve is similar to that of the response recorded more caudally in the dorsal column, i.e., an initially small positivity followed by a negative wave that is in turn followed by a slow positive wave. The beginning of the negative wave coincides in time with the N14 peak in the SEP recorded from the scalp, and its latency is 13 msec. The response from the cuneate nucleus in the rhesus monkey has a similar shape and its negative peak appears with the same latency as the positive peak in the vertex response that has a latency of 4.5 msec; the peak negativity has a latency of about 6 msec and thus coincides with P6.2 in the vertex recording. Depth recordings from the cuneate nucleus and antidromic stimulation of the dorsal column fibers in the monkey provide evidence that the early components of the response from the surface of the cuneate nucleus are generated by the dorsal column fibers that terminate in the nucleus. The results support the hypothesis that the P14 peak in the human SEP is generated by the termination of the dorsal column fibers and that the cuneate nucleus itself contributes little to the far-field potentials.  相似文献

Postsynaptic potentials of 93 motoneurons of the masseter muscle evoked by stimulation of different branches of the trigeminal nerve were studied. Stimulation of the most excitable afferent fibers of the motor nerve of the masseter muscle evoked monosynaptic EPSPs with a latent period of 1.2–2.0 msec, changing into action potentials when the strength of stimulation was increased. A further increase in the strength of stimulation produced an antidromic action potential in the motoneurons with a latent period of 0.9 msec. In some motoneurons polysynaptic EPSPs and action potentials developed following stimulation of the motor nerve to the masseter muscle. The ascending phase of synaptic and antidromic action potentials was subdivided into IS and SD components, while the descending phase ended with definite depolarization and hyperpolarization after-potentials. Stimulation of cutaneous branches of the trigeminal nerve, and also of the motor nerve of the antagonist muscle (digastric) evoked IPSPs with a latent period of 2.7–3.5 msec in motoneurons of the masseter muscle. These results indicate the existence of functional connections between motoneurons of the masseter muscle and its proprioceptive afferent fibers, and also with proprioceptive afferent fibers of the antagonist muscle and cutaneous afferent fibers.A. The authors present their 30 years' experience with expiration reflex. The reflex can be elicited from vocal folds by mechanical, chemical or electrical stimulation of the superior laryngeal nerve of man and laboratory animals, except mice and rats. It manifests itself by a short, forcible expiratory effort without a preceding inspiration which is indispensable for cough effort. The role of expiration reflex is to prevent penetration of foreign bodies into airways, expelling phlegm and detritus from subglottal area. The initial inspiration before expiration is undesired and could lead to inspiration pneumonia. The reflex is well known to laryngologists as '"laryngeal cough." Its receptors are small in number, localised mainly in medial margin of vocal folds deep in mucosa which can explain their stability in pathological conditions of the larygx. Afferentiation of the reflex is via laryngeal nerve similarly to sneezing and cough. Expiration reflex is not co-ordinated by a single "centre" but rather by a network system in the brain stem. Its motor pattern is supposedly produced by "multifunctional" population of medullar neurones in Botzinger complex and the rostral ventral respiratory group involved also in the genesis of breathing and cough. However, in cats also other neurones may play a vital role in production, shaping and mediation of the motor pattern of respiratory reflex, localised in rostral pons, lateral tegmental field or in the raphe medullar midline.  相似文献

Summary The activity in sensory and motor nerves of the gills was recorded from selected branches of the vagus nerve in decerebrate dogfish,Scyliorhinus canicula. Vagal motoneuronal activity was observed at the start of the rapid pharyngeal contraction and was followed by sensory nerve activity which preceded the slow expansion phase. Rhythmical vagal motoneuronal activity was still present after all movements had been prevented by curare paralysis although the frequency of the rhythm was higher than in the ventilating fish. Electrical stimulation of vagal sensory fibres had 3 effects on the ventilatory movements. (1) It evoked a reflex contraction of several gill muscles after a latency of about 11 ms. (2) It could reset the respiratory cycle because a stimulus given during expansion delayed the onset of the subsequent contraction. (3) The stimulus could entrain the rhythm if it was given continuously at a frequency close to that of ventilation. The vagal motor rhythm was disrupted by trigeminal nerve stimulation in the paralyzed fish but not if the motor rhythm was being entrained by vagal nerve stimulation. Vagal sensory activity may be important, therefore, in maintaining the stability of the generating circuits.

To analyse the mechanism by which sensory inputs are integrated, interactions of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in response to simultaneous stimulation of two nerves were examined in 12 healthy subjects. Right, left and bilateral median nerves were stimulated in random order so that a precise comparison could be made among the SEPs. The arithmetical sum of the independent right and left median nerve SEPs was almost equal within 40 msec of stimulus onset to that evoked by the simultaneous stimulation of bilateral median nerves. However, a difference emerged after 40 msec. The greatest difference was recorded after 100 msec. Sensory information from right and left median nerves may interact in the late phase of sensory processing. Left median, left ulnar, and both nerves together were stimulated. The sum of the SEPs of left median and ulnar nerves was not equal to that evoked by the simultaneous stimulation of the two nerves even at early latencies. Differences between them were first recorded at 14–18 msec and became greater after 30–40 msec. It is suggested that the neural interactions between impulses in the median and ulnar nerves begin below the thalamic level.  相似文献
