Abstract. 1. Landlocked intertidal pools (potholes) are one of the common aquatic habitats associated with eastern North American salt marshes.
2. Twenty species of insects, of which only eight were common, occurred in the pothole habitat. The harshness of the physical environment incurred in the pothole habitat is largely responsible for this depauperate insect community.
3. Spatial variation in the diversity of the insect community is best explained by differential densities of predaceous fish.
4. Seasonal changes in insect community diversity are attributable to fluctuations in water temperature and accompanying levels of dissolved oxygen.  相似文献

1. Using species distribution data from 111 aquifers distributed in nine European regions, we examined the pairwise relationships between local species richness (LSR), dissimilarity in species composition among localities, and regional species richness (RSR). In addition, we quantified the relative contribution of three nested spatial units – aquifers, catchments and regions – to the overall richness of groundwater crustaceans.
2. The average number of species in karst and porous aquifers (LSR) varied significantly among regions and was dependent upon the richness of the regional species pool (RSR). LSR–RSR relationships differed between habitats: species richness in karstic local communities increased linearly with richness of the surrounding region, whereas that of porous local communities levelled off beyond a certain value of RSR.
3. Dissimilarity in species composition among aquifers of a region increased significantly with increasing regional richness because of stronger habitat specialisation and a decrease in the geographic range of species among karst aquifers. Species turnover among karst aquifers was positively related to RSR, whereas this relationship was not significant for porous aquifers.
4. The contribution of a given spatial unit to total richness increased as size of the spatial unit increased, although 72% of the overall richness was attributed to among-region diversity. Differences in community composition between similar habitats in different regions were typically more pronounced than between nearby communities from different habitats.
5. We conclude by calling for biodiversity assessment methods and conservation strategies that explicitly integrate the importance of turnover in community composition and habitat dissimilarity at multiple spatial scales.  相似文献

1. Using a replicated survey design at the catchment scale, we compared the composition and diversity of diatom communities in three stream groups in the Middle Hills of Nepal: semi-natural reference (Arun Valley), enriched by agricultural runoff (Likhu Khola) and grossly polluted by sewage (Kathmandu Valley). We sampled riffles at all sites; in the Kathmandu Valley and Likhu Khola we also sampled diatoms in pools and on vegetation.
2. Species richness and diversity H' were significantly higher in agricultural streams than in either organically polluted streams or references. Community composition, as shown by principal components analysis, varied significantly between all three stream types due to differences in the abundances of species characteristic of organic enrichment (Kathmandu Valley), moderate enrichment (Likhu Khola) or undisturbed hillstreams (Arun Valley).
3. Few species varied in relative abundance between pools, riffles and vegetation so that variations in community composition and diversity were stronger between stream groups than between habitats. Samples from any one habitat produced only 75.7% (± 8.6 SD) of the species from three habitats, so that surveys aimed at recording biodiversity may need more comprehensive habitat coverage than surveys for biomonitoring.
4. We conclude that diatom communities can indicate different sources of pollution in Nepalese streams, and advocate further studies to develop this indicator potential over a wider area of the Himalaya. Comparisons between replicate groups of streams selected a priori helped to clarify effects which were sometimes obscured by other survey designs.  相似文献

Aim  Niche theory emphasizes the importance of environmental conditions for the distribution and abundance of species. Using a macroecological approach our study aimed at identifying the important environmental gradients for spiders. We generated numerical values of niche position and niche width. We also investigated relationships between these niche properties as well as the degree of phylogenetic conservatism in order to draw conclusions about the evolution of the habitat niche.
Location  Central Europe: lowlands of Austria, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Methods  We analysed 244 published spider communities from 70 habitat types by correspondence analysis. The resulting community scores were used to test for correlations with habitat characteristics. Species scores were used to derive niche position (mean scores) and niche width (standard deviation of scores). To test for niche conservatism we estimated variance components across the taxonomic hierarchy.
Results  The first two axes of the correspondence analysis were correlated with shading and moisture, respectively. Niche width had a hump-shaped relationship to both environmental gradients. β-diversity was strikingly higher in open habitats than in forests. Habitat niche conservatism was lower than phylogenetic conservatism in body size.
Main conclusions  Environmental factors are important drivers for the β-diversity of spiders, especially across open habitats. This underlines the importance of preserving the whole range of moisture conditions in open habitats. Narrow niches of species occurring at the ends of both environmental gradients indicate that adaptations to extreme habitats lead to constraints in ecological flexibility. Nevertheless, the habitat niche of species seems to evolve much faster than morphological or physiological traits.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Theory is unclear about the optimal degree of isolation of habitat fragments where the aim is to maximise species richness. In a field-based microecosystem of Collembola and predatory and non-predatory mites, moss patches of the same total area were fragmented to varying degrees. The habitat was left for several months to allow the communities to approach a new state of equilibrium.
2. The species richness (in particular of predatory mites) of a given area of habitat was greater when it was part of a large mainland area than part of an island, in agreement with theory.
3. Conversely, species richness and abundance were largely unaffected by fragmentation of a fixed area of island habitat. In this case, it is suggested here that the advantages of several small patches (e.g. reduced impact of environmental stochasticity, wider range of habitats overall) were equally balanced by the advantages of a single large patch (e.g. reduced effect of demographic stochasticity, wider range of habitats within a single patch, reduced edge effect), or that both effects were small.
4. The shapes of rank–abundance curves were similar among the levels of fragmentation of a fixed area of island habitat, implying that fragmentation had little impact on community structure. Conversely, the species composition of non-predatory mites varied weakly, but significantly, by fragmentation.  相似文献

1. Agricultural land devoted to low-intensity practices supports many declining bird species in Europe. The potential effects of intensification or abandonment of traditional farming practices are assessed from the point of view of the conservation of the chough Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax .
2. The study was conducted in Los Monegros (north-east Spain), in a pseudosteppe landscape of special relevance for this species. In this area traditional farming survives in the form of low-intensity arable systems including fallowing and extensive sheep grazing.
3. Foraging choughs showed a strong selection for field margins, avoided any remnant of the original scrubland and halophitic vegetation, and utilized other habitats maintained by traditional crop rotation (e. g. fallow, stubble) at different times of the year.
4. A highly complex pattern of habitat selection was found which was not only related to seasonal changes in habitat availability, but also differed between territorial pairs and the non-breeding population. This emphasizes the importance of taking all the different components of bird populations into account when analysing interactions between habitat selection and the annual farming cycle.
5. Chough habitat selection suggests that both agricultural intensification and land abandonment would have detrimental consequences for this species in Los Monegros. The maintenance of traditional farming is recommended, especially by promoting the use of long fallow rotations grazed extensively by livestock, encouraging the increase of grassland edges around landholdings and sand roads, and maintaining a low input of biocides. These management measurements could also favour most other endangered species of steppe birds, and could be supported by the establishment of Zonal Programmes under the CAP Agri-Environment Regulation (2078/92).  相似文献

Consequences of large-scale processes for the conservation of bird populations   总被引:17,自引:15,他引:2
1.  Detailed studies of population ecology are usually carried out in relatively restricted areas in which emigration and immigration play a role. We used a modelling approach to explore the population consequences of such dispersal and applied ideas from our simulations to the conservation of wild birds.
2.  Our spatial model incorporates empirically derived variation in breeding output between habitats, density dependence and dispersal. The outputs indicate that dispersal can have considerable consequences for population abundance and distribution. The abundance of a species within a patch can be markedly affected by the surrounding habitat matrix.
3.  Dispersal between habitats may result in lower population densities at the edge of good quality habitat blocks and could partially explain why some species are restricted to large habitat fragments.
4.  Habitat deterioration may not only lead to population declines within that habitat but also in adjacent habitats of good quality. This may confound studies attempting to diagnose population declines.
5.  Although mobile species have the advantages of colonizing sites within metapopulations, dispersal into poorer quality territories may markedly reduce total populations.
6.  There are two main approaches to conservation: one is to concentrate on establishing and maintaining protected areas, while the other involves conservation of the wider countryside. If dispersal is an important process then protecting only isolated areas may be insufficient to maintain the populations within them.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Metapopulation and island biogeography theory assume that landscapes consist of habitat patches set in a matrix of non-habitat. If only a small proportion of species conform to the patch–matrix assumptions then metapopulation theory may only describe special cases rather than being of more general ecological importance.
2. As an initial step towards understanding the prevalence of metapopulation dynamics in a naturally fragmented landscape, the distribution of beetle species in three replicates of three habitat types was examined, including rainforest and eucalypt forest (the habitat patches), and buttongrass sedgeland (the matrix), in south-west Tasmania, Australia.
3. Ordination methods indicated that the buttongrass fauna was extremely divergent from the fauna of forested habitats. Permutation tests showed that the abundance of 13 of 17 commonly captured species varied significantly among habitats, with eight species confined to eucalypts or rainforest, and three species found only in buttongrass. Approximately 60% of species were confined to forested habitat implying that metapopulation theory has the potential to be very important in the forest–buttongrass landscape.
4. Although floristically the rainforest and eucalypts were extremely distinct, the beetle faunas from eucalypts and rainforests overlapped substantially. Therefore rainforest patches connected by eucalypt forest represent continuous habitat for most species.
5. Other studies report a wide range of values for the proportion of patch-specific species in fragmented landscapes. Understanding the environmental or historical conditions under which a high proportion of species become patch specialists would help to identify where spatial dynamic theory may be especially applicable, and where habitat loss and fragmentation poses the greatest threat to biodiversity.  相似文献

The present study describes ontogenetic shifts in habitat use for 15 species of coral reef fish at Rangiroa Atoll, French Polynesia. The distribution of fish in different habitats at three ontogenetic stages (new settler, juvenile, and adult) was investigated in coral-dominated and algal-dominated sites at two reefs (fringing reef and inner reef of motu). Three main ontogenetic patterns in habitat use were identified: (1) species that did not change habitats between new settler and juvenile life stages (60% of species) or between juvenile and adult stages (55% of species—no ontogenetic shift); (2) species that changed habitats at different ontogenetic stages (for the transition “new settler to juvenile stage”: 15% of species; for the transition “juvenile to adult stage”: 20% of species); and (3) species that increased the number of habitats they used over ontogeny (for the transition “new settler to juvenile stage”: 25% of species; for the transition “juvenile to adult stage”: 25% of species). Moreover, the majority of studied species (53%) showed a spatial variability in their ontogenetic pattern of habitat use according to alternate reef states (coral reef vs algal reef), suggesting that reef state can influence the dynamics of habitat associations in coral reef fish.  相似文献

1. Spatial patterns at regional and local scales were examined for evidence that species interactions can influence distribution and abundance within a guild of benthic fishes in upland streams of Oklahoma, U.S.A. Three groups of community patterns were examined: the species–area relationship, species–habitat associations, and interspecific associations.
2. The species–area relationship for riffle habitats was compared to a null species–area model based on random placement. The observed species–area curve was steeper resulting in less species per unit area in small streams than predicted by the null model.
3. Small, species-poor streams had summed fish densities at least as high as larger, species-rich streams, suggesting density compensation.
4. Several significant patterns of negative covariation were found among species at the regional scale, before and after statistically accounting for effects due to measured habitat variables.
5. For two of these negatively covarying taxa ( Cottus carolinae and Etheostoma spectabile ), the influence of each species on the distribution of the other was evaluated experimentally in field enclosures varying in depth and current velocity. The sculpin C . carolinae caused a shift in habitat use by the darter E . spectabile , but no reciprocal shift was found.
6. These results indicate an agreement between local and regional patterns of distribution for C . carolinae and E . spectabile and suggest that biotic interactions can influence regional patterns of distribution for species within this guild.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The ecological circumstances that precipitate speciation remain poorly understood. Here, a community of Heliconius butterflies in lowland Panama was studied to investigate patterns of pollen use, and more specifically the ecological changes associated with the recent divergence of Heliconius melpomene (Linnaeus) and H. cydno (Doubleday).
2. Considering the seven commonest Heliconius species in the community, 32 types of pollen or spore were encountered in pollen loads but only five pollen species were common. Systematic exploitation of pollen was therefore confined to a small proportion of the flowers visited.
3. Most of the variation in pollen load composition between individuals was explained by differences in collecting locality. The exception was Psiguria , which was used in all habitats by the melpomene / hecale clade far more than by the erato / sapho clade. This may suggest an ancestral switch within Heliconius towards increased reliance on Psiguria pollen.
4. Heliconius cydno and H. melpomene differed significantly in pollen load composition for three of the five most commonly collected pollen species. This is most probably explained by differences in habitat preference; H. melpomene and its co-mimic H. erato are found in open habitat while H. cydno and its co-mimic H. sapho are found in closed-canopy forest.
5. As melpomene and cydno are known to hybridise occasionally, such differences in adult microhabitat contribute to pre-mating isolation. Habitat divergence between H. cydno and H. melpomene , which is associated with changes in mimicry, must have played a role in their recent speciation.

SUMMARY. 1. Macroinvertebrates were sampled from three habitats at each of forty-five sites in the catchment of the Welsh River Wye. Micro-distribution patterns between three habitat types were assessed for those species which occurred most commonly.
2. Of the fifty-three taxa for which analysis was possible, twenty showed a significant association with habitat type. Eleven occur mostly in margins, eight mostly in riffles, and one in flats (depositing reaches).
3. Twenty-one taxa, including eleven additional to those show significant associations, showed. significant differences between habitats in their relative abundance. Ten were most abundant in margins, eight in riffles and three in flats.
4. Factors possibly responsible for these habitat preferences are discussed.  相似文献

Arthropod communities in fragmented agricultural landscapes depend on local processes and the interactions between communities in the habitat islands. We aimed to study metacommunity structure of spiders, a group that is known for high dispersal power, local niche partitioning and for engaging in species interactions. While living in fragmented habitats could lead to nestedness, other ecological traits of spiders might equally lead to patterns dominated either by species interactions or habitat filtering. We asked, which community pattern will prevail in a typical agricultural landscape with isolated patches of semi-natural habitats. Such a situation was studied by sampling spiders in 28 grassland locations in a Hungarian agricultural landscape. We used the elements of metacommunity structure (EMS) framework to distinguish between alternative patterns that reveal community organization. The EMS analysis indicated coherent species ranges, high turnover and boundary clumping, suggesting Clementsian community organization. The greatest variation in species composition was explained by local habitat characteristics, indicating habitat filtering. The influence of dispersal could be detected by the significant effect of landscape composition, which was strongest at 500 m. We conclude that dispersal allows spiders to respond coherently to the environment, creating similar communities in similar habitats. Consistent habitat differences, such as species rich versus species poor vegetation, lead to recognisably different, recurrent communities. These characteristics make spiders a predictable and diverse source of natural enemies in agricultural landscapes. Sensitivity to habitat composition at medium distances warns us that landscape homogenization may alter these metacommunity processes.  相似文献

Using bird survey data taken in three cities in Southern Chile, we evaluated the hypothesis that changes in community composition from periurban to urban areas are not random. Furthermore, the consistency of species and guild loss was assessed across cities. A consistent pattern of difference in community and guild structure between urban and periurban habitats was found. In addition, a nonrandom loss of species was found in urban areas compared to periurban areas, and non‐native species dominated urban communities in all cities. The average abundance of omnivores, granivores, and habitat generalists was higher in urban areas, while insectivores and open habitat species were more abundant in periurban areas. These results strongly suggest that urban habitats act as filters offering suitable conditions for only a fraction of the bird species present in a given area, and the lack of suitable conditions may be facilitating local biotic homogenization in the three studied cities. The results of this study not only fill a biogeographical knowledge gap, but the work presented here also aids the general understanding of factors that affect community structure in habitats with varied levels of local and global urbanization.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. A macroinvertebrale survey of various habitats (e.g. riffles, pools, tree roots) at sixteen sites in the Teifi catchment in September 1981 yielded 217 taxa excluding Hydracarina and Chironomidae.
2. Sites with the greatest number of habitats were generally rich in taxa and supported the highest number of 'rare' species, the latter generally being associated with vegetation. However, species were not generally restricted to particular habitats although ecdyonurid mayflies predominated in riffles and one leptocerid caddisfly was principally collected from tree roots.
3. Four groups of taxa which characterized three habitat groups were established using classification procedures and it was concluded that three habitat types (eroding, depositing and vegetation) should be sampled to describe adequately the macroinvertebrate fauna at each site.
4. Three attributes (species richness, species rarity and site uniqueness) were used to establish the conservational value of each site; in general, the main river and one lowland tributary were of highest conservational significance.
5. Multiple regression analyses were used to establish significant relationships between the three attributes and environmental features such as number of habitats, altitude, river width, pH and total hardness. Such relationships may facilitate a rapid assessment of resource value without expensive biological survey.  相似文献

1.?Although the intrinsic habitat preferences of a species can be considered to be fixed, the realized habitat use depends on the prevailing abiotic and biotic conditions. Often the core habitats are occupied by dense and stable populations, while marginal habitats become occupied only at times of high density. In a community of interacting species, habitat uses of different species become inter-related, for example an increased density of a strong competitor forcing a weaker competitor to use more marginal habitats. 2.?We studied the spatio-temporal distribution patterns of three common small mammal species, the bank vole Myodes glareolus; the field vole Microtus agrestis; and the common shrew Sorex araneus, in a 4-year trapping study carried out on six large islands, each containing a mixture of three main habitat types (forest, field and clear-cut). We experimentally released least weasels (Mustela n. nivalis) to some of the islands to see how the focal species respond to increased predation pressure. 3.?Both vole species were largely restricted to their core habitats (bank voles to forests and field voles to fields) at times of low population density. With increasing density, the relative habitat use of both species increased in the clear-cut areas. The common shrew was a generalist in its habitat use at all population densities. 4.?The release of the weasels changed the habitat use of all study species. 5.?The vole species showed a stronger aggregated pattern than the common shrew, especially at low population density. The vole aggregations remained in the same localities between seasons, except in the case of bank voles after the weasels were released. 6.?Bank voles and field voles avoided each other at high density. 7.?We conclude that intrinsically differential habitat requirements and flexibility to modify habitat use facilitate the coexistence of the two competing vole species in mosaic landscapes consisting of boreal forests and open habitats.  相似文献
