The influence of feeding on the surfacing frequency of the air-breathing fishPolyacanthus cupanus was investigated. Feeding increased the surfacing and swimming activities. Food conversion, maintenance requirements and energy spent in swimming and surfacing were measured under different feeding regimes.  相似文献

Reared in cylindrical aquaria containing different depths of water (2.5 to 70 cm) the obligatory air-breathing fish Ophiocephalus striatus, belonging to different weight classes (0.1, 0.75, 10, 20 and 41 g), was forced to swim vertically a longer or shorter distance per surfacing. Surfacing frequency was a depth-dependent, activity in individuals weighing less than 20 g in all weight classes, the frequency was nearly 2 times more in the series fed ad libitum on fish muscle, than in the one where the fish were starved. Owing to the sustained surfacing activity and the consequent fatigue, the test individuals hung to the surface for a definite period. Neither frequency nor duration of hanging was depth-dependent. Mean hanging durations for the feeding series were 1.1, 3.8, 5.9, 7.9 and 8.8 hr/day in the 0.1, 0.75, 10, 20 and 41 g weight classes, respectively; the corresponding values for the starving series were 1.3, 15.0, 13.0, 12.7 and 12.8 hr/day. The distance swum by the feeding fish increased from 57 to 681 m/day and from 61 to 507 m/day in the 0.1 and 41 g individuals exposed to the minimum and maximum aquarium depths. Feeding rate, which was a depth-dependent activity, decreased from 280 to 113 g cal/g live fish/day with increasing weight. Rate and efficiency of conversion also decreased with increasing body weight; in larger fish conversion was dependent on volume rather than on depth of the aquarium. O2 uptake of feeding fish was about 6 times higher than the starving ones of the tested weight classes at different aquarium depths.This paper is part of a thesis submitted by the author (from A.P.A. Electrolyte leakage was measured in hardened and nonhardened leaves of three potato species, Solanum tuberosum L., S. acaule Bitt. and S. commersonii Dun., and one interspecific cross, Alaska Frostless (S. acaule x S. tuberosum) when exposed to various subzero temperatures. The leaves were undercooled (no ice present) from 0°C to -12.5°C for 45 min and to-4°C for up to 10 d. Regardless of the degree of undercooling no injury was observed in any of the potatoes, hardened or nonhardened, for up to 12 h. After 5 d, however, electrolyte leakage was observed in hardened S. tuberosum, S. acaule and S. commersonii, and in nonhardened Alaska Frostless. Oxygen uptake of Channa marulius was studied under water with and without access to air. There was a significant increase in the oxygen uptake through the gills when access to air was prevented. However, this value (0.863 ± 0.058 mlO2/indiv./h) was quite low in comparison to the total bimodal oxygen uptake (2.04 ± 0.14 mlO2/indiv./h) in juveniles. In adult fish the oxygen uptake per unit time increased appreciably (4.673 ± 0.404 mlO2/indiv./h). In juveniles as well as in adults the air breathing dominated over aquatic breathing. This fish showed a definite circadian rhythm in the bimodal oxygen uptake during different hours of the day.This work was performed in the Ichthyology Laboratory, P. G. Do short-term fluctuations in CO2 concentrations at elevated CO2 levels affect net CO2 uptake rates of plants? When exposed to 600 μl CO2 l?1, net CO2 uptake rates in shoots or leaves of seedlings of two tropical C3 tree species, teak (Tectona grandis L. f.) and barrigon [Pseudobombax septenatum (Jacq.) Dug.], increased by 28 and 52% respectively. In the presence of oscillations with half-cycles of 20 s, amplitude of ca. 170 μl CO2 l?1 and mean of 600 μl CO2 l?1, the stimulation in net CO2 uptake by the two species was reduced to 19 and 36%, respectively, i.e. the CO2 stimulation in photosynthesis associated with a change in exposure from 370 to 600 μl CO2 l?1 was reduced by a third in both species. Similar reductions in CO2-stimulated net CO2 uptake were observed in T. grandis exposed to 40-s oscillations. Rates of CO2 efflux in the dark by whole shoots of T. grandis decreased by 4.8% upon exposure of plants grown at 370 μl CO2 l?1 to 600 μl CO2 l?1. The potential implications of the observations on CO2 oscillations and dark respiration are discussed in the context of free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) systems in which short-term fluctuations of CO2 concentration are a common feature.  相似文献

Alcaligenes eutrophus and three other hydrogen bacteria exposed to plasmid-curing agents generated autotrophic-minus mutants at high frequency. These mutants were blocked in the metabolism of H2 as an energy source and had normal levels of enzymes involved in CO2 fixation. The loss of hydrogenase activity in A. eutrophus was accompanied by the loss or alteration of a plasmid that had molecular weight of approximately 200×106. Mobilization of this plasmid from wild-type A. eutrophus strains into cured hydrogenase-minus derivatives restored hydrogenase function. We studied changes in biochemical and physiological status, level of oxidative damage, and antioxidant enzyme activities in detached leaves of cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Pyunggangnaebyungsamchuk) that were exposed to a low temperature (4°C). Chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) declined during the chilling treatment, but was slowly restored after the tissues were returned to 25°C. Likewise, the fluorescence quenching coefficient and relative water content decreased during the stress period, but then increased during recovery. In contrast, we detected a significant rise in protein and hydrogen peroxide contents in the chilled leaves, as well as higher activities for superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, peroxidase, and glutathione reductase. However, the level of catalase decreased not only during chilling but also after 24 h of recovery. These results indicate that exposure to low temperatures acts as an oxidative stress. Moreover, we propose that a regulating mechanism exists in the detached cucumber leaves and contains an antioxidant defense system that induces active oxygen species, thereby alleviating the effects of chilling stress within 12 h.  相似文献

Numbers of fungi were determined in water and sediment samples from a virgin salt-fresh water transect at North Point, James Bay. Fungal densities in the water samples showed an approximately linear increase from 28–70 CFU/100 ml, at the salt water extremity of the transect, to 13–16,000 CFU/100 ml at the freshwater extremity. Sediment fungal densities were also higher in the inland samples. There was no apparent difference between the numbers of fungi estimated using enumeration media prepared with distilled or saline water. Data are discussed in relation to the physical, chemical and organic status of the water, the nature of the surrounding vegetation and possible sources of the enumerated fungi.  相似文献

Intracerebroventricularly administered angiotensin (Ang) II and III dose-dependently suppressed food intake in mice and their anorexigenic activities were inhibited by AT(2) receptor-selective antagonist. Ang II did not suppress food intake in AT(2) receptor-knockout mice, while it did significantly in wild-type and AT(1) receptor-knockout mice. The suppression of food intake in AT(1) receptor-knockout mice was smaller than that in wild-type. The anorexigenic activities of Ang II and III were also blocked by a selective antagonist for prostaglandin EP(4) receptor. Taken together, centrally administered Ang II and III may decrease food intake through AT(2) receptor with partial involvement of AT(1) receptor, followed by EP(4) receptor activation, which is a novel pathway regulating food intake.  相似文献

Alterations in microbial mineralization and nutrient cycling may control the long-term response of ecosystems to elevated CO2. Because micro-organisms constitute a labile fraction of potentially available N and are regulators of decomposition, an understanding of microbial activity and microbial biomass is crucial. Tallgrass prairie was exposed to twice ambient CO2 for 8 years beginning in 1989. Starting in 1991 and ending in 1996, soil samples from 0 to 5 and 5 to 15 cm depths were taken for measurement of microbial biomass C and N, total C and N, microbial activity, inorganic N and soil water content. Because of increased water-use-efficiency by plants, soil water content was consistently and significantly greater in elevated CO2 compared to ambient treatments. Soil microbial biomass C and N tended to be greater under elevated CO2 than ambient CO2 in the 5–15 cm depth during most years, and in the month of October, when analyzed over the entire study period. Microbial activity was significantly greater at both depths in elevated CO2 than ambient conditions for most years. During dry periods, the greater water content of the surface 5 cm soil in the elevated CO2 treatments increased microbial activity relative to the ambient CO2 conditions. The increase in microbial activity under elevated CO2 in the 5–15 cm layer was not correlated with differences in soil water contents, but may have been related to increases in soil C inputs from enhanced root growth and possibly greater root exudation. Total soil C and N in the surface 15 cm were, after 8 years, significantly greater under elevated CO2 than ambient CO2. Our results suggest that decomposition is enhanced under elevated CO2 compared with ambient CO2, but that inputs of C are greater than the decomposition rates. Soil C sequestration in tallgrass prairie and other drought-prone grassland systems is, therefore, considered plausible as atmospheric CO2 increases. 为了研究不同温度及CO2浓度下培养的大型海藻对紫外辐射的生理学响应,选取龙须菜(Gracilaria lemaneiformis)作为实验材料。实验设置两个温度梯度(20 ℃和24 ℃),两种CO2浓度(390 μL/L和1000 μL/L)以及3种辐射处理,即可见光(PAR)处理(滤除紫外线A(UV-A)、紫外线B(UV-B),400-700 nm)、可见光加紫外线A(PA)处理(滤除UV-B,320-700 nm)、PAB处理(全波长辐射280-700 nm)。结果表明,酸化、升温以及紫外辐射处理都未影响大型经济红藻龙须菜的叶绿素a和类胡萝卜素的含量。然而紫外辐射处理显著降低了龙须菜的有效光化学效率,其抑制水平在酸化处理的藻体中更为显著,并且随着温度的上升而进一步加剧;酸化与温度耦合使藻体对紫外辐射的敏感性增加,导致其较低的修复速率以及较高的损伤速率。  相似文献

Summary Of the 143 million hectares of cultivated rice land in the world, 75% are planted to wetland rice. Wet or flooded conditions favour biological nitrogen fixation by providing (1) photic-oxic floodwater and surface soil for phototrophic, free-living or symbiotic blue-green algae (BGA), and (2) aphotic-anoxic soil for anaerobic or microaerobic, heterotrophic bacteria. TheAzolla-Anabaena symbiosis can accumulate as much as 200 kg N ha–1 in biomass. In tropical flooded fields, biomass production from a singleAzolla crop is about 15 t fresh weight ha–1 or 35 kg N ha–1. Low tolerance for high temperature, insect damage, phosphorus requirement, and maintenance of inoculum, limit application in the tropics. Basic work on taxonomy, sporulation, and breeding ofAzolla is needed. Although there are many reports of the positive effect of BGA inoculation on rice yield, the mechanisms of yield increase are not known. Efficient ways to increase N2-fixation by field-grown BGA are not well exploited. Studies on the ecology of floodwater communities are needed to understand the principles of manipulating BGA. Bacteria associated with rice roots and the basal portion of the shoot also fix nitrogen. The system is known as a rhizocoenosis. N2-fixation in rhizocoenosis in wetland rice is lower than that ofAzolla or BGA. Ways of manipulating this process are not known. Screening rice varieties that greatly stimulate N2-fixation may be the most efficient way of manipulating the rhizocoenosis. Stimulation of N2-fixation by bacterial inoculation needs to be quantified.  相似文献

Synopsis Observations on continuously swimming tunas were used to determine effects of temperature upon volitional locomotory activity and to determine upper and lower lethal temperatures. Experimental subjects were 10 skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis, 9 kawakawa, Euthynnus affinis, and 3 yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares.Our results: lower and upper lethal temperatures for the euthynnids (K. pelamis and E. affinis) were 15° and 33° C, respectively. Swimming speed for the euthynnids did not decrease with temperature within most of the zone of thermal tolerance; we observed either temperature independence or increases in speed as the temperature decreased. Yellowfin tuna swam slower as the water temperature decreased, but swimming speed changes lagged behind the water temperature changes. This effect was most certainly due to the large thermal inertia that is a property of tunas. The lag between swim speed and water temperature was eliminated by utilizing an estimate of red muscle temperature, rather than water temperature, as a covariate. Yellowfin tuna swim speed was best correlated with red muscle temperature rather than ambient water or brain temperatures.  相似文献

We examined the in situ CO2 gas-exchange of fruits of a tropical tree, Durio zibethinus Murray, growing in an experimental field station of the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia. Day and night dark respiration rates were exponentially related to air temperature. The temperature dependent dark respiration rate showed a clockwise loop as time progressed from morning to night, and the rate was higher in the daytime than at night. The gross photosynthetic rate was estimated by summing the rates of daytime dark respiration and net photosynthesis. Photosynthetic CO2 refixation, which is defined as the ratio of gross photosynthetic rate to dark respiration rate in the daytime, ranged between 15 and 45%. The photosynthetic CO2 refixation increased rapidly as the temperature increased in the lower range of air temperature T c (T c <28.5 °C), while it decreased gradually as the temperature increased in the higher range (T c 28.5 °C). Light dependence of photosynthetic CO2 refixation was approximated by a hyperbolic formula, where light saturation was achieved at 100 mol m–2 s–1 and the asymptotic CO2 refixation was determined to be 37.4%. The estimated gross photosynthesis and dark respiration per day were 1.15 and 4.90 g CO2 fruit–1, respectively. Thus the CO2 refixation reduced the respiration loss per day by 23%. The effect of fruit size on night respiration rate satisfied a power function, where the exponent was larger than unity.  相似文献

We fed prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) rat chow diluted with variable amounts of -cellulose to determine 1) how much fiber the voles could tolerate in their diet; 2) changes in food intake and digestibility of dry matter and of fiber; 3) the extent to which voles utilized fiber as an energy source; and 4) whether any of these variables differed between groups of animals maintained at 5 or 22°C. Fiber content of the diets ranged from 20 to 84%. Animals held at 5°C maintained body mass through a diet containing 69% fiber, while animals held at 22°C maintained body mass through the 84% fiber diet. Dry matter intake increased with fiber level from 9.3 to 15.0 g·day-1 for animals at 5°C and from 5.6 to 14.0 g·day-1 for animals at 22°C; intake on the highest fiber diet eaten by either group was not different. Dry matter digestibility decreased significantly as the fiber in the diets increased, but was not affected by temperature treatments. Digestible dry matter intake for each group remained constant regardless of diet quality, but on each diet digestible dry matter intake for animals at 5°C was significantly higher than that of the animals held at 22°C. Digestibility of the fiber portion of the experimental diets remained constant as food quality decreased, so the percent of daily energy need met by fiber utilization increased with higher food intake. The effect of enzyme concentration on the H2-uptake and H2-evolving activities of the reversible hydrogenase from Thiocapsa roseopersicina was examined. In the activity range assayed by a spectrophotometric technique the apparent H2-uptake specific activity varied greatly with hydrogenase concentration. Study of H2-evolving activity measured by the H2 electrode method and compared with a gas chromatographic assay also indicated that specific activity was highly dependent on enzyme concentration. The results indicate that the widely applied hydrogenase assays give systematically erroneous specific activity values. These assays should be used only for relative measurements and the hydrogenase concentration in the reaction mixture should be kept constant. To make the data from various laboratories comparable the assay parameters should be standardized.  相似文献

The silk protein sericin has been identified as a potent antioxidant and photoprotective agent against ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation in mouse skin model. In this study, we have investigated the anti-apoptotic effect of sericin in UVB (30 mJ/cm2)-irradiated human keratinocytes. Flow cytometry analysis has shown that pre-treatment with sericin inhibits UVB-induced apoptosis. The pre-treatment with sericin suppresses bax expression, up-regulates the expression of bcl-2, prevents both the activation of caspase-3 and cleavage of Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase. Generation of intracellular hydrogen peroxide in UVB-treated keratinocytes is inhibited through pre-treatment with sericin suggesting that sericin probably prevents mitochondrial damage. Photosynthetic productivity (Ps) of the estuarine dinoflagellate Prorocentrum mariae-lebouriae (Parke and Ballantine) comb. nov., was measured with an open differential infra-red gas analysis system especially designed to measure CO2 uptake at a constant CO2 concentration. Ps was determined in six different fluorescent lamp spectral qualities (SQ) (daylight, blue, green, orange, orange-red and red) with bandwiths ranging from 50 to 75 nm and at photon flux densities (PFD) from 1.7 to 170 mol of quanta s–1 m–2 to characterize the spectral response of daylight SQ grown P. mariae-lebouriae cultures. Ps was significantly higher for blue irradiation than for any other SQ. Compared to blue (100%) the following mean values were found: daylight 88%, green 79%, orange 29%, orange-red 56%, and red 87%. Differences were greatest at low PFD. Most measurements were performed at 20°C, but Ps was found to vary as a direct function of the culture temperature. A 10°C increase in temperature caused a 50% increase in Ps from 10° to 30°C with saturating PFD. Since the analytical system measured very small CO2 differentials, down to 0.5 l l–1, we were able to detect small and fast CO2 transients at the beginning and end of an irradiation. These transients, known as CO2-burst and CO2-gulp, increased in magnitude with increased PFD.  相似文献

Summary A study was made with eight Philippine wetland rice soils to quantify the possible error caused by the CO2 evolved during direct distillation of soil suspensions in aerobic and anaerobic conditions with MgO. The error caused by CO2 was eliminated by absorbing the ammonia distilled in H2SO4, which was gently boiled to derive off the CO2 absorbed. The possible error caused by CO2 was not eliminated when boric acid was used for absorbing ammonia. The difference in NH4 + values determined by using sulfuric acid and boric acid methods gave an estimate of the error caused by CO2. It was found that CO2 evolved caused negative error in the NH4 + values obtained using the direct distillation of soil suspensions with MgO in presence of KCl. The magnitude of error was higher and significant with anaerobic soil samples but this error was negligible with aerobic soils.  相似文献
