Primates have more distally distributed limb muscle mass compared to most nonprimate mammals. The heavy distal limbs of primates are likely related to their strong manual and pedal grasping abilities, and interspecific differences in limb mass distributions among primates are correlated with the amount of time spent on arboreal supports. Within primate species, individuals at different developmental stages appear to differ in limb mass distribution patterns. For example infant macaques have more distally distributed limb mass at young ages. A shift from distal to proximal limb mass concentrations coincides with a shift from dependent travel (grasping their mother's hair) to independent locomotion. Because the functional demands placed on limbs may differ between taxa, understanding the ontogeny of limb mass distribution patterns is likely an essential element in interpreting the diversity of limb mass distribution patterns present in adult primates. This study examines changes in limb inertial properties during ontogeny in a longitudinal sample of infant baboons (Papio cynocephalus). The results of this study show that infant baboons undergo a transition from distal to proximal limb mass distribution patterns. This transition in limb mass distribution coincides with the transition from dependent to independent locomotion during infant development. Compared to more arboreal macaques, infant baboons undergo a faster transition to more proximal limb mass distribution patterns. These results suggest that functional demands placed on the limbs during ontogeny have a strong impact on the development of limb mass distribution patterns.  相似文献

The ultrastructure and distribution of sensilla on the antennae of the cabbage stem flea beetle, Psylliodes chrysocephala, were investigated using scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Eight different sensillar types were distinguished. These were; hair plate sensilla, sensilla chaetica, three types of sensilla trichodea, sensilla basiconica, grooved peg sensilla and styloconic sensilla. The sensilla chaetica are known to be gustatory receptors. Ultrastructure indicates that the hair plate sensilla and sensilla trichodea type one are probably mechanoreceptors, whilst the sensilla styloconica are probably thermo-hygro receptors. These thermo-hygroreceptors are unusual in that they are innervated by two sensory cells (one hygroreceptor and one thermoreceptor) rather than the more usual triad. The remaining four sensillar types all have a porous hair shaft, indicating an olfactory role. One of these (the grooved peg sensillum) may also have a thermoreceptive function. No sexual dimorphism was found in the structure, number or distribution of the antennal sensilla.  相似文献

The distribution and density of terminal hair growth have been studied in 19 different body regions in 100 normal women of fertile age and 25 normal postmenopausal women. In accordance with earlier investigations an age-dependent variation in hair growth pattern was observed. None of the women in either group had terminal hair growth on the cheek, and on the breast region hair was limited to a small circumareolar area. Whereas facial terminal hair growth appeared to be less common than that reported in earlier studies of women from other countries, the frequency of terminal hair in other regions was found to be significantly higher in the Norwegian women. No difference in hair growth pattern between blondes and brunettes could be detected.  相似文献

Seven different limb malformations types were defined in 544 affected newborns, apparently free from other anomalies, obtained from a series of 297,299 livebirths. These seven malformation types were: polydactyly, limb reduction, brachydactyly, symphalangy, syndactyly and split hand/foot. One anomaly type was present in 472 newborns (1.58/1,000) and two or three in 72 (0.24/1,000). The observed combinations of two or three limb malformation types cannot be explained as chance association. Therefore, a common etiopathogenic mechanism has to be considered when two or more limb malformation types are combined in a given individual. The most frequent observed combinations were: reduction-brachydactyly, reduction-syndactyly, brachydactyly-syndactyly, polydactyly-syndactyly, and reduction-brachydactyly-syndactyly. Based on affected limb distribution, sex ratio, and familial recurrence rates, it is suggest that a reduction anomaly is the primary component in all tested combinations while syndactyly tends to be a secondary one when combined with any other limb anomaly type.  相似文献

The relation between hair growth and levels of sex hormones in serum and saliva was investigated in 256 !Kung San and Kavango men (ages 18 to 39 years) from Namibia/Southern Africa. Serum concentrations of total testosterone (Tser), 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and estradiol (E2) as well as the level of bioavailable non-SHBG-bound testosterone in the saliva (Tsal) were determined by radioimmunoassay. The distribution and density of scalp and facial hair as well as the development of terminal hair on the chest, abdomen, pubic area, arms, fingers, and legs were categorized using objective criteria. Covariance analyses revealed marked differences in the distribution of body hair in the San and the Negro sample. This is partly explained by a significant influence of androgen and estrogen levels on the growth of terminal hair. DHT and the ratio DHT/Tser are significantly positively related to midphalangeal hair growth and negatively to pubic hair development. Tsal, the bioavailable fraction of total testosterone, exerts a weak positive influence on the degree of arm and leg hair growth; the most significant positive effect on the growth of abdominal, arm, and leg hair in our samples is caused by E2. The ratio Tser/E2 correlates significantly negatively with the arm and leg hair development and the ratio DHT/E2 with the degree of abdominal, pubic, arm, and leg hair, whereas lower DHT concentrations occur in men with stronger hair development. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The differentiation of distinct myotube fiber types in chick limb muscle development is coincident with innervation. The role of motoneurons in influencing fiber type differentiation was analyzed by causing chick hind limb muscles to be innervated by inappropriate motoneurons and then examining experimental muscles for changes in the distribution of myosin ATPase fiber types. Motoneuron innervation of limb muscles was altered by performing either limb shifts, limb reversals, or large spinal cord reversals on early neural tube or limb bud stage chick embryos. The distribution of fiber types was then analyzed in muscles from stage 36 (E10) to stage 45 (E20) embryos after processing hind limb sections for myosin ATPase histochemistry. In the majority of experimental muscles examined (267/312), the distribution of myosin ATPase fiber types was unaltered. In the remaining experimental muscles (14%), alterations in the distribution of myosin ATPase fiber types occurred, indicating that in some cases, foreign innervation may alter the developmental program of differentiating myotubes. The results suggest that myotubes differentiate myosin ATPase staining characteristics according to an intrinsic program and that these differentiating myotubes are selectively innervated by motoneurons of the appropriate type under most conditions including normal development. Under exceptional circumstances of motoneuron-muscle fiber type mismatch, embryonic motoneurons can alter fiber type expression.  相似文献

Anatomical studies of the skin of mature White Fulani, N'Dama, Muturu and the Friesian cattle showed that there are significant regional and breeds differences in hair follicle density and depth. The hair follicle distribution per cm2 of skin was higher on the neck, ventral and the upper limb sites (2000 – 2496) than on the dorsal, midside and eye margins (1344 – 1920). Low densities were recorded on the horn margin, perineum and the lower limb sites (576 – 960). This regional distribution was consistent in all breeds except the White Fulani in which follicle densities were significantly lower for most body sites. Hair follicle depth was greater in the Friesians (1.63 ± 0.68 mm) than in the N'Dama (0.98 ± 0.13 mm), the White Fulani (0.91 ± 0.31 mm) and the Muturu (0.84 ± 0.25 mm) cattle. Among body sites, follicle depth was significantly greater on the horn margin, lower and upper limbs and the scrotum (1.16 – 1.48 mm) than on other body sites (0.86 – 0.98 mm). A significant negative correlation was found between hair follicle density and follicle depth.  相似文献

In order to define the symbiotic role of some of the chemical substituents in the Rhizobium etli Nod factors (NFs), we purified Nod metabolites secreted by the SM25 strain, which carries most of the nodulation genes, and SM17 with an insertion in nodS. These NFs were analyzed for their capabilities to induce root hair curling and cytoskeletal rearrangements. The NFs secreted by strain SM17 lack the carbamoyl and methyl substituents on the nonreducing terminal residue and an acetyl moiety on the fucosyl residue on the reducing-terminal residue as determined by mass spectrometry. We have reported previously that the root hair cell actin cytoskeleton from bean responds with a rapid fragmentation of the actin bundles within 5 min of NF exposure, and also is accompanied by increases in the apical influxes and intracellular calcium levels. In this article, we report that methyl-bearing NFs are more active in inducing root hair curling and actin cytoskeleton rearrangements than nonmethylated NFs. However, the carbamoyl residue on the nonreducing terminal residue and the acetyl group at the fucosyl residue on the reducing terminal residue do not seem to have any effect on root hair curling induction or in actin cytoskeleton rearrangement.  相似文献

The papillae basilares of three species of turtles and four species of snakes were studied by SEM. The papillae of turtle are relatively large among reptiles and are characterized by a long, horizontal middle section resting on wide basilar membrane. Both terminal ends of the papilla extend onto the surrounding limbus in the form of a forked or "T" -shaped end or as a curved, "hook"- like processes. Details vary with the species. In the three species of turtles studied, there were between 1,100 and 1,400 hair cells on a papilla. The tectorial membrane covering the horizontal portion of the papilla is heavy in appearance and tightly attached to the kinocilial bulbs. The terminal ends of the papilla are covered by a thin gelatinous material. In addition, mat-like tectorial network covers the supporting cells and extends from the microvilli of the supporting cells to the overlying tectorial membrane. All hair cells are unidirectionally and abneurally oriented. The supporting cell surfaces form a large part of the papilla and, thus, hair cell density is low. The papillae of the two boid snake species studied are moderately long among snakes and contain a moderate number of hair cells (574 in Epicrates and 710-780 in Constrictor). Papillar form is elongate, avoid, or canoe-shaped. The tectorial membrane may be either highly fenestrated or moderately dense and covers all but a few of the terminal hair cells. A tectorial-like mat covers all but a few of the terminal hair cells. Most hair cells are unidirectionally and abneurally oriented. A few terminal cells in boids may show reverse orientation. Hair cell density is similar to that of turtles.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To examine genetic and environmental factors in the origin of isolated congenital limb deficiencies. DESIGN--Case-control study with questionnaire at a family interview of cases of isolated congenital limb deficiencies (six types), negative controls (matched for age, sex, and place of residence), and positive controls (cases of sentinel anomalies). SETTING--The database of the Hungarian Congenital Abnormality Registry, 1975-84, complemented by three other sources of ascertainment (1,575,904 births). SUBJECTS--537 case-control pairs; 392 positive controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Smoking during pregnancy, congenital limb deficiencies. RESULTS--The adjusted rate of smoking during pregnancy was significantly higher in the mothers of cases of terminal transverse defect (relative odds 1.48; 95% confidence interval 0.98 to 2.23; P = 0.017). This finding supports the hypothesis of vascular disruption as a cause of congenital limb deficiency. CONCLUSIONS--Maternal smoking during pregnancy raises the relative odds for terminal transverse limb deficiencies.  相似文献

New hair cells are added during postembryonic life in several species of fishes and birds. The production of new hair cells appears to require enlargement of eighth nerve arbors during growth since, at least in fish, eighth nerve neurons are added more slowly than hair cells or not at all. This situation provides an intriguing opportunity to study the mechanisms of growth of the neuronal arbors. In this paper, we report the results of studies on the postembryonic growth of eighth nerve dendritic arbors in the saccular epithelium of the cichlid fish Astronotus ocellatus. Arbor sizes and shapes were compared in small and large fish using the axonal tracer cobaltouslysine. Our data suggest that postembryonic eighth nerve arbors enlarge in 2 ways. First, arbors add new terminal endings to their distal ends. Second, whole new branches appear to be added at locations up to hundreds of micrometers proximal to the terminal endings. These 2 modes of growth suggest that more than one mechanism may be operative in controlling arbor enlargement.  相似文献

Sensory hair cells from the striolar region (striolar hair cells) of the utricle and the lagena of the ear of a teleost fish Astronotus ocellatus (Cuvier) ear are sensitive to gentamicin sulphate, an ototoxic drug. In contrast, sensory hair cells from outside the striolar region (extra-striolar hair cells) are not sensitive to gentamicin. These data, combined with results from studies showing different ultrastructural features and different immunoreactivity to a calcium binding protein, S-100, lead to the suggestion that there are distinguishable types of hair cells in these endorgans. These results add to the increasing evidence that classifying the sensory hair cells of fish ears only as the traditional 'vestibular type II' may be inadequate for properly understanding structure and function of the fish ear.  相似文献

A group of six dorsal unpaired median (DUM) neurons of the suboesophageal ganglion (SOG) of locusts was studied with neuroanatomical and electrophysiological techniques. The neurons are located posteriorly in the SOG and have axons that descend into the ganglia of the ventral nerve cord, some as far as the terminal abdominal ganglion. Within thoracic ganglia the neurons have profuse dendritic ramifications in many neuropiles, including ventral sensory neuropiles. Based on their projection patterns three different morphological types of neurons can be distinguished. These neurons receive excitatory inputs through sensory pathways that ascend from the thoracic ganglia and are activated by limb movements. They may be involved in the modulation of synaptic transmission in thoracic ganglia.  相似文献

SUMMARY Paleontological evidence indicates that the evolutionary diversification of mammals early in the Cenozoic era was characterized by an adaptive radiation of distal limb structures. Likewise, neontological data show that morphological variation in distal limb integumentary appendages (e.g., nails, hooves, and claws) can be observed not only among distantly related mammalian taxa but also among closely related species within the same clade. Comparative analysis of nail, claw, and hoof morphogenesis reveals relatively subtle differences in mesenchymal and epithelial patterning underlying these adult differences in distal limb appendage morphology. Furthermore, studies of regulatory gene expression during vertebrate claw development demonstrate that many of the signaling molecules involved in patterning ectodermal derivatives such as teeth, hair, and feathers are also involved in organizing mammalian distal limb appendages. For example, Bmp4 signaling plays an important role during the recruitment of mesenchymal cells into the condensations forming the terminal phalanges, whereas Msx2 affects the length of nails and claws by suppressing proliferation of germinal epidermal cells. Evolutionary changes in the form of distal integumentary appendages may therefore result from changes in gene expression during formation of mesenchymal condensations ( Bmp4 , posterior Hox genes), induction of the claw fold and germinal matrix ( shh ), and/or proliferation of epidermal cells in the claw matrix ( Msx1 , Msx2 ). The prevalence of convergences and parallelisms in nail and claw structure among mammals underscores the existence of multiple morphogenetic pathways for evolutionary change in distal limb appendages.  相似文献

Total testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in blood serum as well as free testosterone in saliva were determined by radioimmunoassay in 110 healthy young men. The results were compared with the development of terminal hair on the trunk and limbs, with the disposition to balding and with the disposition to acne. No significant correlations were found between terminal hair development and absolute androgen levels; however, some significant values were observed in the case of the metabolic rate of dihydrotestosterone/testosterone and the proportion of free to total testosterone. The disposition to balding also correlates positively with the latter ratio. Yet the absolute serum androgen concentrations in men with a disposition to balding is lower than in men with no reduction of scalp hair. The widespread assumption that androgen levels are in general elevated in bald-trait men must therefore be rejected. In accordance with this finding, men with a disposition to balding are morphologically (with regard to anthropometric measures) no more masculine than those with good scalp hair growth. When body build and age are taken into consideration, the relations between terminal hair and androgen ratio are also problematical. No relationship could be found between acne and androgens.  相似文献

The morphology of human scalp hair follicle keratinocytes, cultured on the bovine eye lens capsule, is studied by light and electron microscopy. The hair follicle keratinocytes in the stratified cultures are characterized by the presence of numerous tonofilaments, desmosomes and lysosomes and by the presence of glycogen accumulations. The cells in the upper layers develop a cornified envelope. Moreover, an incomplete basal lamina is found between the capsule and the basal cells. However, some features of epidermal keratinocytes in vivo, such as keratohyalin granules and stratum corneum formation, are absent. Analysis of the polypeptides by sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis also reveals differences between the cultured hair follicle cells and epidermis, whilst the patterns of cultured cells and hair follicle sheaths are similar. The morphological and protein biosynthetic aspects of terminal differentiation of the keratinocytes in vitro are correlated. These results are discussed in the light of the findings with cultured epidermal keratinocytes, reported in the literature.  相似文献

The functions of the gustatory, olfactory, touch and stress receptors on the cerci of Lucilia cuprina Wied. (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are apparent from the morphology of their distal dendritic segments and associated cuticular structures. Each trichoid mechanoreceptor has a dendrite containing a tubular body at the base of the hairshaft. The suspension fibres and socket septum may be involved in transmitting a stimulus to the dendrite terminal and restoring the hair to its resting position. The campaniform sensilla are considered as trichoid mechanoreceptors with reduced hair shafts and socket structures, reflected in fusion of the suspension fibres into the inner cuticle of the dome and loss of the socket septum. Fusion and reduction of the socket structures is also apparent at the bases of the olfactory pegs. They differ from typical antennal olfactory sensilla in having a flexible socket and relatively thick walls; features which may protect them from damage during ovipositor probing of potential oviposition substrates. The two types of cereal gustatory sensilla differ in their complement of chemosensory dendrites, one has three, the other four, the latter type also has a mechanoreceptive dendrite at the base of the hair shaft. Both types have socket structures resembling those of the trichoid mechanoreceptors.  相似文献

Examination of the lateral line canals in the Epaulette Shark reveals a much more differentiated sensory system than previously reported from any elasmobranch. Two main types of lateral line canals are found. In one type rounded patches of sensory epithelia are separated by elevations of the canal floor. The other type is a straight canal without restrictions and with an almost continuous sensory epithelium. In addition, we found epithelia (type A) with very long apical microvilli on the supporting cells. These microvilli reach beyond the stereovilli of the hair cells. Another type (B) of sensory epithelium has short microvilli on the supporting cells. In this latter type of epithelium the stereovilli of the hair cells are comparatively tall and reach out beyond the supporting cell microvilli.
New hair cells are found widely in both types of sensory epithelia. These always occur as single cells, unlike those described in teleost lateral line canal sensory epithelia where new hair cells seem to form in pairs. Dying hair cells are also widespread, indicating a continuous turnover of hair cells.  相似文献
