ABSTRACT

The annual reproductive cycle comprises steady gametogenic activities that synchronize gonadal maturation and spawning rhythms, which are important for aquatic organisms including marine echinoderms (Echinodermata, Echinoidea). In this study, we report the annual reproductive cycle, gonadal development, and changes in nutritive phagocytes (NPs, which accumulate nutrients in germ cells) in relation to gametogenesis of the Atlantic sea urchin (Arbacia punctulata, an edible echinoid) in the Gulf of Mexico. Monthly changes in gonadal development and maturation were observed morphologically and histologically. We calculated gonadosomatic index (GSI) and compared the stages of gonadal development in order to determine the NPs index, and characteristics of germ cells (eggs and sperm) during the annual reproductive cycle. According to GSI and histological analyses, gametogenic activities were classified into four stages of both sexes: mature (June–August), spent (September–November), recovery (December–March), and growing (April–May). The GSI values in both sexes were high during summer months. In males, testicular lobules were densely packed with sperm from June to August. In females, however, mature eggs first appeared in some ovaries in May, numerically increased from June to July, and decreased in August. During gametogenesis, on the other hand, NPs in both testes and ovaries were depleted from June to August. Collectively, our results suggest that the Atlantic sea urchin spawns during summer months in the Gulf of Mexico. This is the first report, to the best of our knowledge, on gonadal development and changes in NPs during the annual reproductive cycle of any Arbacia species in the Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

Changes in the nucleic acid levels of different tissues during a regular gonadal maturation were used to investigate the sex-related size differences in Iberian barbel, Barbus sclateri. Gonadal DNA concentration was associated with gonadal development in both sexes. There was a decline in DNA when ovaries were ripe. In contrast, the maximum size of the testes was related with highest gonadal DNA concentrations. Gonadal growth was not related with liver RNA : DNA ratios of male, while it was with female ratios. White muscle DNA concentrations indicate that somatic cell volume decreased during gonadal growth in both sexes. This suggests the translocation of several elements toward the gonad. Moreover, during gonadal maturation period adult barbel showed no change in their somatic growth. However, males apparently were in poorer metabolic condition (lower muscle RNA : DNA ratio) than females. Females may have allocated additional energy to self-maintenance rather than to breeding effort and it might influenced the cumulative annual growth. One might reasonably assume that there is a trade-off between investment in current versus future reproductive success in female. This result was not seen in males.  相似文献

Differential energetic investment in reproduction between the sexes has been a driving a force of life history theory and sexual selection. However, reproductive costs between the sexes have often been based on morphology, such as gonad mass and gonadosomatic indices (GSI), and few have directly measured the energy content of gonadal tissues in relation to GSI. Using the blackeye goby, Rhinogobiops nicholsii, we measured the energetic content of whole gonadal tissues, specifically testes, ovaries and associated reproductive tissues using oxygen bomb calorimetry. The energy content per gram unit of gonadal tissues was generally predictive of GSI, indicating that GSI is a reasonable measure of energetic costs. Interestingly, although females had greater gonadal mass, GSI and energy content per gram than males, the sex difference in energy content per mass unit was only 13 %, suggesting that gross indices such as gonadal mass or GSI may overestimate energetic costs where instead the cost difference in a unit gram of gonadal tissues between the sexes is smaller than often predicted. This study also demonstrates that although the cost of ovaries is greater than testes, males’ investment in reproductive tissue can be considerable, which is consistent with the often inflated reproductive success for males in haremic mating systems.  相似文献

LH/hCG receptors were disrupted by gene targeting in embryonic stem cells. The disruption resulted in infertility in both sexes. The gonads contained no receptor mRNA or receptor protein. Serum LH levels were greatly elevated, and FSH levels were moderately elevated in both sexes; estradiol and progesterone levels decreased but were not totally suppressed in females; testosterone levels were dramatically decreased and estradiol levels moderately elevated in males. The external and internal genitalia were grossly underdeveloped in both sexes. Abnormalities included ambiguous vaginal opening, abdominal testes, micropenis, dramatically decreased weights of the gonads and reproductive tract, arrested follicular growth beyond antral stage, disarray of seminiferous tubules, diminished number and hypotrophy of Leydig cells, and spermatogenic arrest beyond the round spermatid stage. LH/hCG receptor gene disruption had no effect on FSH receptor mRNA levels in ovaries and testes, progesterone receptor (PR) levels in ovaries and androgen receptor (AR) levels in testes. However, it caused a dramatic decrease in StAR and estrogen receptor-alpha (ERalpha) mRNA levels and an increase in ERbeta mRNA levels in both ovaries and testes. Estradiol and progesterone replacement therapy in females and testosterone replacement in males, to determine whether phenotype and biochemical changes were a consequence of decreased gonadal steroid levels or due to a loss of LH signaling, revealed complete restoration of some and partial restoration of others. Nevertheless, the animals remained infertile. It is anticipated that the LH receptor knockout animals will increase our current understanding of gonadal and nongonadal actions of LH and hCG.  相似文献

A histological study of gonadal organization of 354 Symphodus ocellatus caught in the Bay of Naples from June 1985 to December 1986 demonstrated the absence of sexual inversion in this species. Four phases of gonadal development, related to the seasonal cycle, are described. During the reproductive period the ovaries showed the asynchrony in oocyte development that is typical of serial spawners. The testes of three types of males present in this species (territorial, satellite and sneaker males) were examined: the only difference found was in the gonadal growth pattern during the reproductive period.  相似文献

To study the reproductive biology of Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) in Furnas Reservoir, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a total of 1307 specimens were captured in bimonthly sampling from August 1993 to July 1994. The sex ratio showed a predominance of females, representing 65.2% of the total sample. The stages of gonadal maturation and spawning type were determined through macro- and microscopic analysis of the gonads as well as by variation in the gonadosomatic indices. A . fasciatus showed fractionated spawning and reproduction throughout the year, with spawning peaks influenced by water temperature and rainfall. Males and females initiated gonadal maturation at a mean standard length of 6.4 and 6.5 cm, respectively. During gonadal maturation, females showed a reduction in hepatosomatic index (from 1.06 to 0.83), suggesting that hepatic substances are transferred from the liver to the ovaries. In the reproductive period, A. fasciatus had lower stomach repletion and coelomic fat indices, indicating that this species ate less and consumed more fat reserves when reproduction had the maximum GSI (11.3 for females and 2.7 for males). Weight of the ovaries had a positive influence on the condition factor (K1), as the lowest K2 value (weight without gonads) were obtained during maturation, confirming the influence of the ovaries upon the physiological condition of the females. In weight–length relationship, parameter b was 3.02 for females and 2.23 for males, and the correlation coefficient ( r 2) was 0.84 and 0.66, respectively.  相似文献

The viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus) is a seasonal rodent living in the Southern Hemisphere. The adult males exhibit an annual reproductive cycle characterized by a gonadal regression period during winter. In this study, we investigated the effects of bilateral enucleation and captivity on their annual reproductive cycle. Testicular volume relative to body weight was recorded monthly in intact and bilaterally enucleated animals placed under natural photoperiod, water, and food ad lib. and constant temperature. Testes and accessory organs were evaluated by qualitative and quantitative light microscopic studies. The intact animals showed an annual reproductive cycle with complete gonadal atrophy in the first year. In the second year, testicular regression was observed but attenuated in regard to that recorded in the first winter period, indicating that adaptive changes might be involved. Bilateral enucleation in the viscacha dampened and extended the period of its annual reproductive cycle. The results suggest that both conditions, constant captivity and enucleation, produced stimulatory effects on the reproductive system of this rodent. Furthermore, local control mechanisms might be responsible for the morphological differences observed in testes, epididymis, and seminal vesicles from both groups, which exhibited similar levels of serum testosterone. Finally, an intact retinohypothalamic-pineal axis and/or photoperiodic input would be necessary to maintain the reproductive cycle amplitude and timing in viscacha.  相似文献

If maturation is more costly for females, they may need more distinct environmental cues to induce sexual reproduction than males. We verified this hypothesis by comparing the indirect costs of maturation to males and females of the heterogonic Hydra oligactis, reproducing both asexually and sexually. The laboratory experiments revealed that males mature 2 weeks earlier than the first females at falling temperatures simulating the natural conditions that precede sexual reproduction. The difference between the energy costs of maturation for males versus females has been considered a likely factor responsible for the observed difference in maturation time. Available food supply positively affected the percentage of sexually mature females, indicating that females are more sensitive to food limitation than males. The number of gonads was correlated positively with the size of mature hydra for both males and females. However, males produced twice as many testes as ovaries produced by females. We postulate that females are induced later than males in order to prevent gonadal development after an unseasonable drop in temperature. As sexual reproduction in H. oligactis interferes with asexual budding, under favorable conditions for asexual proliferation unnecessary gonadal development decreases an individual’s fitness through reduction of the number of produced offspring.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of anglerfish was studied by examining fresh material obtained from commercial landings and research vessel surveys. The general morphology and histology of the gonads are described. This species has unusual gonads. The testes are tubular, and beanshaped in transverse section. The maturation process of the testis is similar to that of most other teleosts. The ovaries are confluent and form a single, flattened tube. During maturation, the width and, in particular, the length of the ovaries increases dramatically. A gelatinous matrix is produced during the maturation process, which contributes to the enormous size and weight of ripe ovaries. Ripe testes can be found throughout the year, whereas ripened ovaries were found only between November and May. Females outnumbered males in length classes greater than 70 cm and no males larger than 90 cm were found. The estimated mean length at maturity (150%) was 73 cm for females and 49 cm for males. Because only the large female anglerfish are capable of spawning, and because virtually all large anglerfish are female, trends in their abundance resulting from commercial exploitation should be monitored with care.  相似文献

Specific antibody for chum salmon somatolactin (SL) was used for immunocytochemical investigation of SL cell activity of Mugil cephalus during the gonadal cycle in both natural habitat and captivity. The SL-immunoreactive cells showed strong and specific immunoreactivity to antichum salmon SL. The number of SL-immunoreactive cells increased, as did the secretory and synthetic activity during sexual maturation and spawning in the natural habitat. The SL cells were rather small and moderately immunoreactive in immature fish; they were enlarged, their numbers increased, and they frequently showed more SL immunoreactivity during gonadal development. In addition, during late stages of maturation, small cell size with more or less SL immunoreactive cells were noted, indicating an active release of SL granules. Prespawning females tended to have more enlarged SL cells with stronger immunoreactivity than equivalent males. The SL cells showed an increase in the secretory activity during spawning as indicated by small size and weak immunoreactivity. The SL cells of M. cephalus reared in captivity showed high activity. This may be due to the low concentration of calcium in fresh water. The gradual stimulation of SL synthesis and release during sexual maturation and spawning of M. cephalus suggest that SL may be involved in the control of some steps of reproductive processes, such as steroidogenesis, calcium metabolism, and energy mobilization.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to analyze the differences in the activity of hormone stanniocalcin (STC) between male and female fishes of Mastacembelus armatus during their gonadal cycle. A large variation in nuclear diameter of cells of corpuscles of Stannius (CS) were recorded in relation to testicular cycle as well as ovarian cycle which indicates that the cellular activity varied with different phases of reproductive cycle in both male and female fish. Similar changes in nuclear diameter of CS cells were also observed after 17alpha-methyltestosterone administration in males and 17 β-estradiol administrations in females. A positive correlation was observed between plasma STC levels, gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the sex steroids in both sexes, suggesting that STC has a role in the processes involved in gonadal development. In addition females showed remarkable changes in plasma calcium level during gonadal cycle while no such change for males were observed. In females the plasma calcium level estimated during different phases of reproductive cycle indicates positive correlation between plasma level of calcium and gonad growth. Thus hyperactivity of CS cells was noted in both male and female fishes during gonadal cycle along with the differences in the activity of STC as well. In female it may act as hypocalcemic factor and bring the level of calcium to normal which increases during preparatory and pre spawning phases to fulfill the increased demand of calcium for vitellogenesis. However data of male fishes indicated that plasma STC concentration varied widely during gonadal cycle but showed no consistent relationship to plasma calcium level.  相似文献

Differences between species in breeding seasons are thought to be mediated through differences in their reproductive physiology. Little is known about how the timing and duration of gonadal maturation varies between raptor species, how the timing of moult relates to the gonadal cycle, whether the timing and degree of sexual maturation varies between juveniles and adults or whether body condition has a significant effect. To address these questions, data on gonadal size and moult for adults and juveniles of both sexes of three raptor species were extracted from the Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme (based on birds found dead by members of the public). The three species, Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus, Kestrel Falco tinnunculus and Barn Owl Tyto alba, have different ecologies – diurnal bird predator, diurnal mammal predator and nocturnal mammal predator, respectively. All are single‐brooded but have different breeding seasons. The duration of gonadal maturation was markedly different between the species. Barn Owls showed the earliest maturation and the latest gonad regression, and Sparrowhawks the latest maturation and earliest gonad regression. Kestrels were intermediate. In males of all species, the testes remained fully mature throughout their respective breeding seasons. In females, the ovaries remained partially mature throughout the breeding season. Moult started slightly earlier in Sparrowhawks than in Kestrels and coincided with gonadal regression in the two species. Although females of the two species started to moult earlier than males, moult duration was similar between the sexes. Barn Owls showed no distinct annual pattern of moult. In juveniles of all three species, the gonads were smaller than in adults throughout spring and started to mature later. Gonad size in birds that had starved tended to be smaller than in birds dying from other causes, but did not influence the difference in gonad mass between adults and juveniles and between seasons. Body condition had no effect on moult. Whilst ecology has led to the evolution of different breeding seasons, differences between species, and between adults and juveniles, are mediated through adaptive differences in their reproductive physiology.  相似文献

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone is intermittently released from the hypothalamus in consistent patterns from before birth to final maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis at puberty. Disruption of this signaling via GnRH vaccination during the neonatal period can alter reproduction at maturity. The objective of this study was to investigate the long-term effects of GnRH-antibody exposure on reproductive maturation and function in elk calves passively exposed to high concentrations of GnRH antibodies immediately after birth. Fifteen elk calves (eight males and seven females) born to females treated with GnRH vaccine or sham vaccine during midgestation were divided into two groups based on the concentration of serum GnRH antibodies measured during the neonatal period. Those with robust (>15 pmol 125I-GnRH bound per mL of serum) titers (N = 10; four females and six males) were designated as the exposed group, whereas those with undetectable titers (N = 5; three females and two males) were the unexposed group. Onset of puberty, reproductive development, and endocrine function in antibody-exposed and unexposed male and female elk calves were compared. Neonatal exposure to high concentrations of GnRH antibodies had no effect on body weight (P = 0.968), endocrine profiles (P > 0.05), or gametogenesis in either sex. Likewise, there were no differences between groups in gross or histologic structure of the hypothalamus, pituitary, testes, or ovaries. Pituitary stimulation with a GnRH analog before the second potential reproductive season induced substantial LH secretion in all experimental elk. All females became pregnant during their second reproductive season and all males exhibited similar mature secondary sexual characteristics. There were no differences between exposure groups in hypothalamic GnRH content (P = 0.979), pituitary gonadotropin content (P > 0.05) or gonadal structure. We concluded that suppressing GnRH signaling through immunoneutralization during the neonatal period likely does not alter long-term reproductive function in this species.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to compare the reproductive physiology of triploid and diploid European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.). Gonads of diploid and triploid fish (males and females) were examined both microscopically and macroscopically, together with the plasma levels of the major sex steroids produced (testosterone and estradiol-17beta) when fish were adults. Prior to sexual maturation, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) of triploid males was similar to that of diploids. However, the GSI in 4-year-old adult triploid males was 1.8 times lower than that of diploids (P < 0.05). All diploid males exhibited normal gonadal development. In contrast, in triploid males spermatogenesis was impaired during late meiosis, affecting severely spermiogenesis. This was achieved by an increasing imbalance in the amount of DNA present in daughter cells of the same type as spermatogenesis progressed, as demonstrated by abnormal cell sizes, culminating in inviable spermatids. Thus, no spermiating triploid fish were observed during 4 years, which included three full consecutive maturation cycles. Furthermore, the germ cells from triploids were significantly larger than those from diploids (P < 0.001). Seasonal profiles of plasma levels of testosterone in 4-year-old males were essentially similar in both ploidies. On the other hand, triploid females had rudimentary ovaries containing oogonia and primary oocytes that were arrested during meiotic prophase I, while diploid females exhibited all stages of ovarian development. Diploid females showed levels of testosterone and estradiol-17beta significantly higher than those of triploids (P < 0.05), in which no endocrine signs of maturation were observed at all. Regarding sex ratios, triploids had 10% more females than diploids (P < 0.05) but in both ploidies males predominated, as is usually found in this species under culture conditions. These results show that triploidy blocked the initial phases of meiosis in females and the latter ones in males, resulting in the absence of or reduced gonadal development, respectively. In conclusion, we provide an explanation for the lack of gonadal development in triploid male fish, and, to the best of our knowledge, we report for the first time a case in which induced triploidy completely blocks meiosis in both sexes, thus conferring functional sterility in the sea bass.  相似文献

Using antiserum specific for the β subunit of coho salmon gonadotropic hormone II (GTH II), an immunocytochemical study of Mugil cephalus (L.) pituitaries was conducted during the annual reproductive cycle of the male in both natural habitat and captivity. The gonadotropic potency of the pituitary gland in general underwent an obvious increase during testicular development, reaching a peak at the time of reproductive maturity. During the testicular cycle of M. cephalus, the GTH cells showed an increase in immunoreactive staining intensity, granulation, hypertrophy and hyperplasia during sexual maturation. However, degranulation, vacuolization, and weakened immunoreactivity of these cells occurred during spawning. The GTH cells in the pituitary gland of M. cephalus males reared in captivity appeared with high synthetic and secretory activity but the reproductive activity declined, as reflected in the form of low values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and earlier resorption of the testes.  相似文献

Developmental changes in the reproductive behavior and physiology of 9 male and 15 female juvenile squirrel monkeys were evaluated in a 20-month study. Plasma levels of gonadal steroids remained relatively low for this species until most animals reached puberty between 2.5 and 3 years of age. Longitudinal assessment of plasma progesterone levels indicated that the onset of ovarian cycles tended to be synchronized between females although the 5 heaviest females began to cycle earlier than the rest. The heavier females reached puberty at a time which was appropriate to their birth in the wild, whereas most of the remaining females conceived 6 months later during a second period of reproductive activity that coincided with the laboratory mating season. Pubescent males underwent their first seasonal elevation in plasma testosterone levels during the second period and its onset was synchronized across all males. Thus, even in the absence of adults, pubertal processes in the squirrel monkey were strongly influenced by the seasonal breeding pattern. In addition, behavioral observations revealed that social maturation closely parallels reproductive ability in females, whereas males enter a protracted subadult stage after puberty.  相似文献

Prenatal testosterone exposure impacts postnatal reproductive and endocrine function, leading to alterations in sex steroid levels. Because gonadal steroids are key regulators of cardiovascular function, it is possible that alteration in sex steroid hormones may contribute to development of hypertension in prenatally testosterone-exposed adults. The objectives of this study were to evaluate whether prenatal testosterone exposure leads to development of hypertension in adult males and females and to assess the influence of gonadal hormones on arterial pressure in these animals. Offspring of pregnant rats treated with testosterone propionate or its vehicle (controls) were examined. Subsets of male and female offspring were gonadectomized at 7 wk of age, and some offspring from age 7 to 24 wk received hormone replacement, while others did not. Testosterone exposure during prenatal life significantly increased arterial pressure in both male and female adult offspring; however, the effect was greater in males. Prenatal androgen-exposed males and females had more circulating testosterone during adult life, with no change in estradiol levels. Gonadectomy prevented hyperandrogenism and also reversed hypertension in these rats. Testosterone replacement in orchiectomized males restored hypertension, while estradiol replacement in ovariectomized females was without effect. Steroidal changes were associated with defective expression of gonadal steroidogenic genes, with Star, Sf1, and Hsd17b1 upregulation in testes. In ovaries, Star and Cyp11a1 genes were upregulated, while Cyp19 was downregulated. This study showed that prenatal testosterone exposure led to development of gonad-dependent hypertension during adult life. Defective steroidogenesis may contribute in part to the observed steroidal changes.  相似文献

Plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) levels were determined at monthly intervals in intact and orchidectomized ground squirrels maintained in a constant 14L:10D photoperiod at a temperature of 23 +/- 2 degrees C. Animals were orchidectomized or sham operated at different ages and at different stages of the annual reproductive cycle. LH levels were elevated in orchidectomized as compared to intact males within 1 month, and often within 48 h, after orchidectomies performed either before or after the normal breeding season. LH levels tended to remain chronically elevated in long-term orchidectomized males. Although negative feedback regulation of LH by the testes was evident at most stages of the reproductive cycle, effects of orchidectomy on LH were most pronounced during the nonbreeding season when plasma LH titers of intact males were at their annual nadirs, and less pronounced or absent during the breeding season when levels were normally elevated in intact males. For most of the year male gonadal hormones exert negative feedback on LH release. We hypothesize that under the influence of a circannual timing mechanism, sensitivity to steroid feedback is reduced as the breeding season approaches and LH secretion increases despite the attendant rise in plasma androgen levels. These results contrast with data for female squirrels in which there is a seasonally restricted and characteristically brief elevation of plasma LH after ovariectomy; in females, but not in males, onset and termination of LH secretion appear to be regulated by a circannual clock that functions independently of gonadal secretions.  相似文献

The highly inbred Coatzacoalcos (Cp) strain of the platyfish, Xiphophorus maculatus, was noted for a high percentage of infertile females (XX). The ovaries of approximately one-quarter of all females regress. The time of gonadal atrophy varied from before sexual maturation up to 11 months of age. The gonadotropic zone of the pituitary was hypertrophied in regressed females. Transplants of immature testes and ovarian tissue into the caudal musculature of regressed females and the subsequent maturation of the grafts demonstrated that the ovarian degeneration was not due to pituitary or hypothalamic malfunction or an autoimmune disease. The cause of the gonadal degeneration was apparently localized to the ovary itself. This phenomenon was never observed in males (XY). Regressed ovaries fell into two categories, designated types I and II, with all being characterized by the presence of ductlike structures which resembled male efferent ducts, lined by Sertoli cells. Type I ovaries bore a marked similarity to certain mammalian dysgenetic gonads, while type II ovaries contained many proliferating germ cells and could be compared to the human neoplasm termed gonadoblastoma. It is suggested that the physiological lesion responsible for the ovarian regression syndrome involves the processes that control the determination and differentiation of the germ cells similar to those found in human 46,XY gonadal dysgenesis.  相似文献

Gametogenesis in female and male Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) was investigated by sampling blood plasma and gonadal tissue from 19 to 33-month-old fish. The reproductive cycles of both female and male Atlantic cod are characterized by distinct annual variations in gonadal size and developmental stage and these are associated with changes in sex steroids and liver size. I(H) did not change during early gonadal development, but both spent females and males had lower I(H) than late maturing females and spermiating males, respectively. In females I(G) was correlated to plasma E2 levels and they were highest in spawning females. The lowest levels during the reproductive cycle were observed in spent females. Plasma T levels were low throughout ovarian development, and were at a minimum in spent females. 11-ketotestosterone in plasma of males increased rapidly during spermiation, while T increased at earlier testicular stages and reached maximum during spermiation. High plasma levels of steroids in male and female cod during spawning serve to promote further development and growth of less advanced stages of germ cells.  相似文献
