Morphogenetic evolution of hydroid colony pattern   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

A scheme of evolution of hydrozoan colony pattern is proposed based upon the consideration of macro-morphogenesis. Four main processes play decisive roles(1) hard skeleton formation by soft tissues, (2) changes in duration of the growth phase relative to the transition to differentiation in interdependent zones of growth, (3) ratio in growth rates between adjacent zones of growth within the rudiment, the shoot, or the whole colony, and (4) spatial relationships among growth zones. The main tendency in morphological evolution of the hydroids is an increasing integration of the colony as revealed by increasing complexity of its structure. That is from a temporary colony towards the permanent one with highly organised shoots, as hydranths and branches are localised in a strictly arranged manner. An analysis of diverse data allows one to state that the main morphogenetic mechanism of increasing complexity in the hydroid colony is convergence, then fusion, of adjacent growth zones, a variant of heterochrony.  相似文献

The presence of FMRF-amide, a cardioactive tetrapeptide, was studied by immunocytochemistry in human and rat gastric antrum and pancreas, and in the ovine, bovine, canine and rabbit pancreas. In human and rat gastric antrum, numerous cells contained FMRF-amide immunoreactive material. By staining of serial sections and by double staining, colocalization of immunoreactivity for gastrin and FMRF-amide was observed in part of the gastrin cells. In the pancreas of these and the other species, immunoreactivity for FMRF-amide was located both in acinar and islet endocrine cells. Colocalization of FMRF-amide and pancreatic polypeptide was found in a proportion of pancreatic polypeptide cells in the pancreas. FMRF-amide immunoreactivity never colocalized with the other neurohormonal peptides which occur in the gastric antrum and the pancreas. Our observations show that neuroendocrine cells occur in the gastric antrum and pancreas which are exclusively immunoreactive or gastrin and for pancreatic polypeptide respectively. In addition cells occur which show immunoreactivity for FMRF-amide as well as for gastrin in the gastric antrum and with antiserum to FMRF-amide as well as for pancreatic polypeptide in the pancreas. It is concluded that FMRF-amide antibodies probably recognize a substance in G and PP cells which is not identical but may be structurally related to gastrin and pancreatic polypeptide.  相似文献

Activity of organizer regions is required for body plan formation in the developing organism. Transplanting a fragment of such a region to a host organism leads to the formation of a secondary body axis that consists of both the donor's and the host's tissues (Gerhart, 2001). The subject of this study, the White Sea hydroid cnidarian Dynamena pumila L. (Thecaphora, Sertulariidae), forms morphologically advanced colonies in the course of complex metamorphosis of the planula larva. To reveal an organizer region, a series of experiments has been performed in which small fragments of donor planula tissues were transplanted to embryos at the early and late gastrula stage, as well as to planulae. Only transplantations of a posterior tip fragment of a donor planula to a host planula of the same age led, in the course of metamorphosis, to the formation of a secondary shoot, which involved up to 50% of the host's tissues. After transplantations of tissue fragments of the anterior tip and the middle of the planula body, the formation of any ectopic structures was never observed. It was concluded that the posterior tip of the planula has organizer properties in Dynamena.  相似文献

It is a widely held view that colonial hydroids (Cnidaria, Hydroidomedusae) are formed on the basis of a repetition of uniform elements. The dominant opinion is that the equal spatial organisation of the colony exists during all stages of its development except the primary polyp, which develops from the settled larva. However, the complex structure and large dimensions of shoots in certain thecate species (subcl. Leptomedusae) suggest that the organisation of the primary shoot differs strongly from that of established colonies. The present study based on a thorough collection and examination of the collected material allowed to describe the entire sequence of the colony ontogeny in Hydrallmania falcata (Sertulariidae). The established shoots of this species are characterised by relatively large size, spiral arrangement of pinnate branches over the shoot stem, and hydranths arranged in one row along the upper side of branches. We showed that the primary shoot developing from the larva has much smaller dimensions and an alternate arrangement of hydranths. During further colony development the shoot organisation undergoes a gradual transformation ending with the emergence of large shoots with 'characteristic' species-specific features. The discovered sequence of changes in shoot patterning shows certain correlations with alterations of the growing tip dimensions. The dimensions of the growing tip seem to determine the patterning in accordance with the particular spatial location of the tip. This finding implies the necessity of a detailed reinvestigation of the entire colony development in thecate hydroids, which would make a significant contribution to the understanding of the morphogenetic evolution and patterning mechanisms within this group of colonial organisms.  相似文献

Summary During embryogenesis and planula development of the colonial hydroidHydractinia echinata cell proliferation decreases in a distinct spatio-temporal pattern. Arrest in S-phase activity appears first in cells localized at the posterior and then subsequently at the anterior pole of the elongating embryo. These areas do not resume S-phase activity, even during the metamorphosis of the planula larva into the primary polyp. Tissue containing the quiescent cells gives rise to the terminal structures of the polyp. The posterior area of the larva becomes the hypostome and tentacles, while the anterior part of the larva develops into the basal plate and stolon tips. In mature planulae only a very few cells continue to proliferate. These cells are found in the middle part of the larva. Labelling experiments indicate that the prospective material of the postmetamorphic tentacles and stolon tips originates from cells which have exited from the cell cycle in embryogenesis or early in planula development. Precursor cells of the nematocytes which appear in the tentacles of the polyp following metamorphosis appear to have ceased cycling before the 38th hour of embryonic development. The vast majority of the cells that constitute the stolon tips of the primary polyp leave the cell cycle not later than 58 h after the beginning of development. We also report the identification of a cell type which differentiates in the polyp without passing through a post-metamorphic S-phase. The cell type appears to be neural in origin, based upon the identification of a neuropeptide of the FMRFamide type.  相似文献

The cerebral nervous system of the larval corn earworm, Heliothis zea, was examined using light microscopy and immunocytochemistry. Immunoreactivity for the molluscan cardioactive peptide FMRF-amide (FMRFa) is widely distributed. Staining is localized in perikarya and axons of the brain, subesophageal ganglion and first thoracic ganglion. Immunoreactive axons are also found in the frontal ganglion and the corpora cardiaca. Crossreactivity studies for FMRFa and bovine pancreatic polypeptide (BPP) demonstrate that (a) the immunoreactive material is more FMRFa-like than BPP-like and (b) the antigenic material is heterogeneous. For animals on different feeding regimens, immunocytochemical surveys and radioimmunoassay suggest the observed variation in immunoreactivity among individuals is unrelated to feeding state.  相似文献

The effects of variations in temperature, salinity and water movement on the laboratory growth and reproduction of a single clone of the bougainvilliid hydroid Clavopsella michaeli were examined. Unfavourable conditions resulted in reproducible oscillations of growth rate. They ranged from overall stimulatory effects (hormesis) to irreversible inhibition and shrinkage of colonies. Exposure to low concentrations (0.1–5 µg l–1) of copper and mercury ions produced similar responses, which were therefore regarded as non-specific. A control mechanism, dampening these growth rate oscillations, supported higher colonial tolerance, that is adaptation, to environmental stresses of low intensity. When the counteractive capacity of the control mechanism was exceeded, inhibition occurred. Higher frequencies of gonozooids were observed in stressed colonies and were interpreted as an adaptive response.  相似文献

Summary Retinoids have been shown to influence pattern formation in hydroid polyps (Hydractinia echinata) at various levels. These effects are counteracted by an inhibitor isolated from Hydra. The present study provides a theoretical attempt to elucidate the role of retinoids by computer simulations based on a simple model of pattern formation in Hydractinia. The elements of this model are morphogens of the Gierer-Meinhardt type, namely a long-range inhibitor and a short-range activator. From the calcualtions, a reducing effect of retinoids on the propagation of the inhibitor seems most probable.  相似文献

The cerebral nervous and midgut endocrine systems of the larval corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea, were examined using light microscopy and immunocytochemistry for RF-amide family peptides. Immunoreactivity for a mosquito neuropeptide, Aedes Head Peptide-I (Aea-HP-I,pERPhPSLKTRFa), is widely distributed in this lepidopteran. Immunostaining for Aea-HP-I is localized (1a) in perikarya and axons of the brain, the subesophageal ganglion, and the first thoracic ganglion, (b) in peripheral axons innervating muscles of the midgut, and (2) in numerous midgut endocrine cells. Aea-HP-I-associated activity generally occurs as a subset of FMRF-amide (FMRFa; a molluscan cardioactive peptide) immunoreactivity. Cross-reactivity studies indicate that Aea-HP-I and FMRFa immunoreactivities are heterogeneous in the cerebral nervous system and in axons innervating the muscles of the midgut, but may be homogeneous in midgut endocrine cells. Radioimmunoassay for Aea-HP-I reveals immunoreactivity in hemolymph, as well as in extracts of midguts and heads.  相似文献

Summary

The annual cycles of gametogenesis, spawning and fertilization biology were investigated in the South African polychaete Arenicola loveni loveni (Kinberg, 1866). Sexes are strictly separate (gonochoric) with a 1:1 ratio and gametogenesis takes place in the coelomic cavity. Reproduction is iteroparous and occurs during a synchronized annual epidemic spawning event during the summer months of February or March, which lasts no longer than 2 weeks at around the time of highest annual seawater temperatures. A slight inter-annual variation in spawning time was observed between 2003 and 2004. Annual fecundity was estimated as 311,200 (± 82,040 standard deviations) oocytes per female per year. Oocytes are arrested at prophase I of the first meiotic division and require a maturation step prior to spawning and subsequent fertilization. Mean spawned oocyte diameter was 141.16 μm ± 0.43 SE. Sperm develop as morulae in the coelomic cavity and also require a maturation step prior to spawning. Spawning can be achieved by injection of prostomial homogenate in both males and females and by injection with 8,11,14- e cosatrienoic acid for males and can be delayed by temperature manipulation. Oocyte maturation and sperm maturation can be induced in vitro by incubating in prostomial homogenate.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of nerve fibers displaying neuropeptide Y immunoreactivity in relationship to the catecholaminergic innervation of rat, guinea pig, and rabbit liver was investigated by single- and double-label immunofluorescence methods. In all three species, neuropeptide Y-immunoreactive fibers are prominent in association with the vasculature, biliary pathway, and stromal compartment. The neuropeptide Y innervation of the parenchyma, on the other hand, differs among the three species in term of density. It is quite sparse in the rat and rabbit, particularly in the former species. In the guinea pig liver, numerous single, varicose neuropeptide Y-containing nerve fibers innervate the hepatic parenchyma; often, thin processes surround single hepatocytes and lie close to sinusoids. The immunoreactive pattern of tyrosine hydroxylase, a marker for catecholaminergic neurons and fibers, is comparable to that of neuropeptide Y. Most neuropeptide Y-containing nerve fibers also contain tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity, in all three species, with the exception of the rabbit parenchyma, where a substantial proportion of catecholaminergic fibers lack immunoreactivity for neuropeptide Y. Finally, systemic administration of the sympathetic neurotoxin, 6-hydroxydopamine, in rats and guinea pigs resulted in virtually complete elimination of both neuropeptide Y- and tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive fibers. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that neuropeptide Y-containing nerve fibers form a subpopulation of the sympathetic innervation of the mammalian liver, which is likely to originate from prevertebral sympathetic ganglia.  相似文献

We examined the development of the nervous system in Aurelia (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) from the early planula to the polyp stage using confocal and transmission electron microscopy. Fluorescently labeled anti-FMRFamide, antitaurine, and antityrosinated tubulin antibodies were used to visualize the nervous system. The first detectable FMRFamide-like immunoreactivity occurs in a narrow circumferential belt toward the anterior/aboral end of the ectoderm in the early planula. As the planula matures, the FMRFamide-immunoreactive cells send horizontal processes (i.e., neurites) basally along the longitudinal axis. Neurites extend both anteriorly/aborally and posteriorly/orally, but the preference is for anterior neurite extension, and neurites converge to form a plexus at the aboral/anterior end at the base of the ectoderm. In the mature planula, a subset of cells in the apical organ at the anterior/aboral pole begins to show FMRFamide-like and taurine-like immunoreactivity, suggesting a sensory function of the apical organ. During metamorphosis, FMRFamide-like immunoreactivity diminishes in the ectoderm but begins to occur in the degenerating primary endoderm, indicating that degenerating FMRFamide-immunoreactive neurons are taken up by the primary endoderm. FMRFamide-like expression reappears in the ectoderm of the oral disc and the tentacle anlagen of the growing polyp, indicating metamorphosis-associated restructuring of the nervous system. These observations are discussed in the context of metazoan nervous system evolution.  相似文献

Summary

Larval development in the South African polychaete Arenicola loveni loveni is described, and the effects of seawater temperature on fertilization success, post-fertilization development and early post-settlement survivorship are experimentally determined. Fertilization success was significantly effected by seawater temperature, with maximum fertilization success measured in the range 15–18°C, which is close to the ambient temperature range at the time of natural spawning. Poor fertilization success and abnormal cleavage were observed at the low temperature treatment of 7°C and the high temperature treatment of 23°C. A. loveni loveni exhibits spiral cleavage typical of polychaetes and has a short lecithotrophic swimming trochophore larval stage of 4–5 days. High mortality was noted during the transitional periods from gastrula-trochophore and during the settlement process. Settlement occurs just 4–5 days post-fertilization and the postsettlement stage begins feeding 1 week post-fertilization. Temperatures in the range 16.5–23°C were found to have a significant effect on larval and post-larval survivorship and growth rate increased with temperature within this range. The effects of manipulating spawning date on subsequent offspring survival and development rates were also investigated. Advancing or delaying spawning time caused reduced development rates, and delaying spawning for 3 months was found to significantly reduce offspring survivorship.  相似文献

With histochemical methods, the perisarc and a certain cell type in Laomedea flexuosa have been shown to contain a catecholamine. The only catecholamine detected in methanolic extracts of the hydroid is dopamine. It is thought to be transferred from spherical inclusions in these cells to the perisarc and to be involved in sclerotization. The dopamine-containing cells appear to differentiate in specific regions of the colony and migrate out to all other regions by active amoeboid movement between ectodermal epithelial cells. The rivets (or desmocytes) contain an unidentified phenolic substance and may also be sclerotized structures.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone-like immunoreactivity (alpha-MSH-Li) was studied in cats using avidin-biotin modification of immunocytochemical method. Cell bodies containing alpha-MSH-Li were observed in the medial basal hypothalamus, especially in the infundibular nucleus, the lateral hypothalamus and near zona incerta. Fibers with alpha-MSH-Li extended beyond the hypothalamus, into the paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus, rostral amygdala, periaqueductal gray, locus ceruleus, parabrachial nucleus and medial nucleus of the nucleus tractus solitarius. Axons with alpha-MSH-Li were also seen diffusely in various cortical areas, but more extensively in the limbic cortical regions. The distribution pattern of the cell bodies and fibers containing alpha-MSH-Li bears several similarities to that seen in rats, but differs in that the alpha-MSH-Li was not observed in cell bodies in locations other than the medial basal and lateral hypothalamus.  相似文献
