Osteoarthritis causes the degradation of the articular cartilage and periarticular bones. Trace elements influence the growth, development and condition of the bone tissue. Changes to the mineral composition of the bone tissue can cause degenerative changes and fractures. The aim of the research was to determine the content of cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in the tibia, the femur and the meniscus in men and women who underwent a knee replacement surgery. Samples were collected from 50 patients, including 36 women and 14 men. The determination of trace elements content were performed by ICP-AES method, using Varian 710-ES. Average concentration in the tissues of the knee joint teeth amounted for cadmium 0.015, nickel 0.60, copper 0.89 and zinc 80.81 mg/kg wet weight. There were statistically significant differences in the content of cadmium, copper and zinc in different parts of the knee joint. There were no statistically significant differences in the content of cadmium, nickel, copper and zinc in women and men in the examined parts of the knee joint. Among the elements tested, copper and nickel showed a high content in the connective tissue (the meniscus) compared to the bone tissue (the tibia and the femur).  相似文献

The aim of this work is to show and give a plausible explanation to gender-dependent differences in correlations between the content of selected elements in rainwater and the frequency of hospitalization by reason of arterial hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and psoriasis in the area of Opolskie Voivodeship, Poland, during the period 2000-2002. The elements analyzed were sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, zinc, copper, lead, cadmium, nickel, chromium, chloride, nitrate, and sulfate. Hospitalization due to arterial hypertension was more frequent in women, whereas those for COPD and psoriasis were more frequent in men. In the case of women hospitalized for arterial hypertension, the correlations were low, except for zinc (r = 0.47) and for cadmium (r = 0.43). In men hospitalized for COPD, all of the correlation coefficients were higher than 0.4, except for phosphorus. The coefficients for nickel, ammonia nitrogen, and total nitrogen ranged from 0.5 to 0.6 and the remaining elements from 0.6 to 0.7. In women, the correlation was limited to five elements where the coefficient was r > 0.4 for chloride, calcium, nitrate, phosphorus, and chromium. In cases of hospitalization for psoriasis, the correlation in men was between 0.4 and 0.5 for chloride, phosphorus, copper, lead, and total nitrogen and greater than 5 for sulfate, potassium, calcium, iron, manganese, nitrate, and ammonium nitrogen. The correlation in women was between 0.48 and 0.5 for ammonium nitrogen and phosphorus.  相似文献

Protein energy malnutrition has become a major health issue in developing countries. In the present study, the effect of protein deficiency on the small intestine and liver tissue content of macroelements and trace elements was investigated in weanling rats. Forty-five male weanling Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups. The control group (C) was fed a standard diet containing 25% casein, whereas the two experimental groups E1 and E2 consumed 12% and 3% casein, respectively, over a period of 45 d. The tissue samples were analyzed for zinc, copper, iron, manganese, calcium, and magnesium by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The protein-deficient groups showed increased levels of iron in both tissues and decreased manganese in small intestine tissue from the E1 group. No other differences were found for the other elements. These results suggest that protein deficiency might cause iron accumulation in the liver and intestine and decreases of manganese in the small intestine.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to measure the content of iron (Fe) in liver tissue samples from urbanized Greenlandic Inuit using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, and compare the results with those obtained in liver tissue samples from urbanized Danes. Normal liver tissue samples were obtained at autopsy from 50 Greenlandic Inuit (27 men, 23 women) with a median age of 61 years (range 23-83) and from 72 Danes (42 men, 30 women) with a median age of 62 years (range 15-87). In the entire series, there was no significant difference between liver iron in Inuit compared with Danes. Likewise, there was no significant gender difference concerning liver iron content, either in Inuit or in Danes. The median iron content (with 5-95 percentile) in Inuit was 17.23 mmol/kg dry liver (5.80-91.80) and in Danes 16.51 mmol/kg dry liver (7.83-39.05). However, when stratified according to age, a trend was revealed showing that Inuit men and women < or = 50 years had a lower liver iron content than Danes (p = 0.05 and p = 0.08) whereas Inuit men and women > 50 years had a higher liver iron content than Danes (p = 0.18 and p = 0.02). There was a significant correlation between liver iron content and age in both Inuit men (rs = 0.49, p = 0.01) and in women (rs = 0.64, p = 0.003), but not in Danes. In Inuit, the median hepatic iron index (liver iron content divided by age) was 0.33 in men and 0.32 in women. The median estimated iron content in the whole liver was 6.54 mmol (365 mg) in Inuit men and 5.41 mmol (302 mg) in Inuit women (p = 0.6). There was no correlation between hepatic iron index and age. In Danes, the median hepatic iron index was 0.46 in men and 0.29 in women (p = 0.01). There was a significant inverse correlation between hepatic iron index and age in the two genders and in the entire series (rs = -0.71, p = 0.0001). The results indicate that young and middle-aged urbanized Inuit have slightly smaller iron stores than urbanized Danes, whereas elderly Inuit have higher iron stores than Danes. In Danes, iron stores plateau at 30 to 40 years of age in men and some years after the menopause in women. In Inuit, iron stores continue to increase in old age, probably to due a lifelong dietary intake of haem iron.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to determine the concentrations of two essential elements (copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn)) and three toxic elements (lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg)) in the hip joint bones of patients from the Chair and Clinic of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. We examined 111 samples of hip joint bones obtained from patients from north-western Poland who had undergone arthroplasty of the femoral head. In cartilage with the adjacent compact bone, and in spongy bone from the examined patients, the concentrations (medians) determined were placed in the following descending sequence Zn>Pb>Cu>Cd>Hg. The concentrations ranged from 86 mg Zn/kg to 0.0020 mg Hg/kg dw. It was found that the concentration of lead in the cartilage with adjacent compact bone was higher in men than in women. In conclusion, it seems that in addition to routine monitoring of the abiotic environment, it is essential to monitor concentrations of heavy metals having a long-term impact in humans.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative contribution of decline in bone density to the increase in risk of hip fracture with age in men and women. DESIGN: Incidence data of hip fracture from the general population were combined with the bone density distribution in a sample from the same population and with a risk estimate of low bone density known from literature. SETTING: The Netherlands. SUBJECTS: All people with a hospital admission for a hip fracture in 1993, and bone density measured in a sample of 581.4 men and women aged 55 years and over in a district of Rotterdam. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: One year cumulative risk of hip fracture by age, sex, and bone density measured at the femoral neck. RESULTS: A quarter of all hip fractures occurred in men. Men reached the same incidence as women at five years older. Controlled for age, the risk of hip fracture by bone density was similar in men and women. The risk of hip fracture increased 13-fold from age 60 to 80; decrease in bone density associated with age contributed 1.9 (95% confidence interval 1.5 to 2.4) in women and 1.6 (1.3 to 1.8) in men. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of hip fracture by age and bone density is similar in men and women. The decrease in bone density associated with age makes a limited contribution to the exponential increase of the risk of hip fracture with age.  相似文献

Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the concentrations of 32 elements in the human liver and kidney and 20 elements in the bone, obtained from 70 autopsied dead individuals (54 males, 16 females) between 18 and 76 yr of age from the North Bohemia territory of the Czech Republic. Geometric means, median, minimal-maximal range, as well as distribution and correlation analysis were calculated. Some significant differences among tissue concentrations of trace elements of the women and men were found. In the liver, medians of the concentrations of some elements were higher for men than that for women (Al: 770 vs 610 microg/kg; As: 42 vs 27 microg/kg; Cd: 1800 vs 1390 microg/kg; Rb: 3955 vs 3210 microg/kg; V: 160 vs 105 microg/kg). On the contrary, the content of other elements for men was lower (Bi: 0.8 vs 3.2 microg/kg; Cr: 57 vs 72 microg/kg; Hg: 228 vs 325 microg/kg; Zn: 57.1 vs 68.5 mg/kg). In the kidney of men, there were higher contents of Al (360 vs 245 microg/kg) and Hg (135 vs 75 microg/kg) and lower contents of Zn (47.7 vs 59.7 mg/kg) and I (135 vs 220 microg/kg) than those of women. In the case of bone, the concentrations of Cu and Rb were higher for men (1410 microg Cu/kg and 405 microg Rb/kg, respectively) than for women (655 microg Cu/kg and 285 microg Rb/kg, respectively). On the contrary, the content of Mn was considerably lower for men (110 microg Mn/kg) than for women (215 microg Mn/kg).  相似文献

The magnesium (Mg) content of human cancellous bone was studied in relation to its elemental composition and mineral density. The material was collected from 138 cadavers consisting men and women of different ages. Duplicate specimens from anterior iliac crest (one macerated and one fixed with alcohol) were obtained from individuals who had died suddenly or whose deaths were due to chronic immobilizing diseases. The cation concentrations were analyzed with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, fluoride with the ion specific electrode, from macerated samples. The samples fixed in alcohol were used for determination of the mineral density with gamma rat attenuation. The mean Mg concentration (+/- SD) was 2.84 +/- 0.29 mg/g in the samples obtained from individuals who had died suddenly with no correlation with age. In the group with chronic diseases the mean Mg levels decreased slightly with increasing age. There was a significant, positive correlation between the Mg and Ca concentrations. In the linear regression analysis 16.4% of the variance of Mg concentration was accounted for by Ca. This relationship was more evident in men than in women. Only the postmenopausal women suffering from chronic diseases and having bone loss showed correlation between the bone Mg and Ca contents. The Mg/Ca ratio in men was quite constant and did not change significantly with age. In women the Mg/Ca ratio versus age showed no statistically significant relationship. The correlation between Mg and other elements was weak. The weak relationships between F and Zn to Mg clearly have no significant effect on the contents of these elements in bone.  相似文献

A practical and easy-to-use analysis technique that can study the patient's hip joint contact force/pressure distribution would be useful to assess the effect of abnormal biomechanical conditions and anatomical deformities on joint contact stress for treatment planning purpose. This technique can also help to establish the normative database on hip joint contact pressure distribution in men and women in different age groups. Twelve anatomic parameters and seven biomechanical parameters of the hip joint in a normal population (41 females, 15 males) were calculated. The inter-parameter correlations were investigated. The pressure distribution in the hip joint was calculated using a three-dimensional discrete element analysis (DEA) technique. The 3D contact geometry of the hip joint was estimated from a 2D radiograph by assuming that the femoral head and the acetabular surface were spherical in shape. The head-trochanter ratio (HT), femoral head radius, pelvic height, the joint contact area, the normalized peak contact pressure, abductor force, and the joint contact force were significantly different between men and women. The normalized peak contact pressure was correlated both with acetabular coverage and head-trochanter ratio. Change of abductor force direction within normal variation did not affect the joint peak contact pressure. However, in simulated dysplastic conditions when the CE angle is small or negative, abductor muscle direction becomes very sensitive in joint contact pressure estimation. The models and the results presented can be used as the reference base in computer simulation for preoperative planning in pelvic or femoral osteotomy.

Recent brain research reveals a major role of trace elements in various diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's and Wilson's disease. The majority of published tissue concentrations dates back decades, and was assessed with various methods. Little is known about hemispherical differences, the correlation of trace elements or age-dependent changes in the human brain. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine trace element concentrations in different human brain regions after whole brain formalin fixation.549 samples of 13 brain regions were investigated in 11 deceased subjects without known history of brain pathology. Regional wet-to-dry mass ratios and concentrations of iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, calcium and zinc were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.Cortical gray matter revealed higher water content (wet-to-dry mass ratios 5.84–6.40) than white matter regions (wet-to-dry mass ratios 2.95–3.05). Element concentrations displayed specific regional differences. Good linear correlation of concentrations between elements was found for iron/copper as well as for manganese/magnesium (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient 0.74 and 0.65, respectively). Significant inter-hemispherical differences were found for copper in occipital white matter, for magnesium and calcium in putamen and for iron and copper in temporal white matter. An age dependent increase was seen in cortical gray matter for calcium, for magnesium in all regions except in cortical gray matter, for copper in substantia nigra and for zinc in occipital cortex. The presented trace element concentrations can serve as a fundamental basis for further brain research. Wet-to-dry mass ratios allow a comparison with reference data from other studies.  相似文献

Preeclampsia complicates 2–8 % of all pregnancies and it is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and pre-term delivery in the world. Unfortunately, there is scarcity of document discussing the circulating level of several essential trace elements in preeclampsia patients in Bangladesh. The present study was designed to evaluate the serum concentration of four trace elements, namely zinc, copper, manganese, and iron, in preeclamptic pregnant women. The study was conducted as a case–control study with 50 preeclamptic pregnant women as cases and 58 normotensive pregnant women as controls. Obstetric, anthropometric, and clinical data were collected at routine obstetric visits. Serum trace elements were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Independent sample t test and Pearson’s correlation test were done for the statistical analysis using the statistical software package SPSS, version 16.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). We observed significant differences for gestational age, body mass index, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure between patient and control groups (p?<?0.05). Analysis of serum trace elements explored significantly lower level of all the four elements in preeclampsia patients in comparison to the control group (p?<?0.05). Pearson’s correlation analysis explored that the correlation between serum level of different trace elements was statistically insignificant (p?>?0.05) except the correlation between zinc and iron in preeclampsia patients (p?<?0.05). Establishment of inter-element relationship strongly supports that there was a disturbance in the element homeostasis in patient with preeclampsia. In conclusion, our study suggests that preeclampsia patients have considerably lower level of serum zinc, copper, manganese, and iron compared to the healthy pregnant women.  相似文献

The concentrations of iron, copper, zinc, manganese, cadmium, and mercury in tissues and organs of Pacific herring, Far Eastern navaga, and spotted flounder from Amurskii Bay, Sea of Japan, were determined using an atom-absorption method. The distribution of these elements has been studied in organisms of the fish. The greatest concentration of iron, copper, cadmium, and mercury is found in the liver of the fish, manganese is mostly accumulated in the bone tissue, and zinc is found in the skin. Some specific features of metal accumulation in the fish of Amurskii Bay have been revealed. For example, the concentration of iron in the liver of herring and flounder significantly increased the mean concentration known from other areas. A sanitary–hygienic evaluation is provided for the recent levels of metal concentrations in these three species of commercially important fish.  相似文献

In order to study the involvement of metals in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, serum samples from patients with Alzheimer and mild cognitive impairment were investigated. For this purpose, metal content was analyzed after size-fractionation of species and then, inter-element and inter-fraction ratios were computed. In this way, the analysis allowed discovering changes that could be used as markers of disease, but also provided a new insight into the interactions in the homeostasis of elements in neurodegeneration and its progression. Aluminum and labile forms of iron and copper were increased in demented patients, while manganese, zinc and selenium were reduced. Interestingly, levels of different elements, principally iron, aluminum and manganese, were closely inter-related, which could evidence a complex interdependency between the homeostasis of the different metals in this disorder. On the other hand, imbalances in metabolism of copper, zinc and selenium could be associated to abnormal redox status. Therefore, this study may contribute to our understanding of the pathological mechanisms related to metals in Alzheimer’s disease.  相似文献

The concentration of trace elements in L-cells has been studied as a function of the trace metal content of the growth medium. Cells were cultured in synthetic media which contained varying trace amounts of the elements manganese, iron, cobalt, copper, zinc and molybdenum. The cellular concentration of the elements potassium, iron, copper and zinc were then determined. It was found that the cell accumulates trace metals at a different rate than they are made available. Deficiencies in zinc could be “induced” in the cell by increasing the concentration of iron, manganese and cobalt; cellular iron deficiencies were observed at larger medium concentrations of zinc, manganese, copper and cobalt. Trace metal uptake by the cell was seen to parallel the utilization by multicellular organisms.  相似文献

Objective

Sarcopenia might be associated with bone fragility in elderly individuals. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia and its association with fragility fracture sites in elderly Chinese patients.

Methods

Patients (322 men and 435 women) aged 65–94 years and with a history of fragility fractures in the ankle, wrist, vertebrae or hip, and healthy men (n = 1263) and women (n = 1057) aged 65–92 years without a history of fractures were enrolled. Whole-body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to analyze skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), fat mass and bone mineral density. Sarcopenia was defined as SMI less than two standard deviations below the mean of a young reference group.

Results

Sarcopenia occurrence varied with fracture location. Sarcopenia was more common in females with vertebral and hip fractures and in men with hip and ankle fractures than in the non-fracture group). Sarcopenia was significantly more prevalent in men with wrist, hip and ankle fractures than in women. SMI was correlated with BMD in different fracture groups. Logistic regression analyses revealed that lower SMI was associated with an increased risk of hip fracture both in men and women and ankle fracture in men.

Discussion

Sarcopenia may be an independent risk factor for hip and ankle fractures in men, and for hip fractures in women.  相似文献

Summary Proton-induced X-ray microanalysis (micro-PIXE) permits the simultaneous determination of the content and the distribution of elements with atomic numbers higher than Z = 13 in biological samples. This method was used to investigate element content and localization in cross-sections of 6-month-old spruce needles. It was possible to detect the elements silicon, phosphorus, sulphur, chlorine, potassium, calcium, manganese, iron and zinc in semithin (10 m) sections of the needles. The localization of the cationic elements like potassium, calcium and manganese was determined in the one-dimensional line scan mode and in the two-dimensional raster scan mode. To demonstrate the usefulness of this method for forest decline research, element content and localization were compared in needles from two trees, which differed in their degree of damage. We were able to detect differences in the amount of cations and in their distribution inside the needles.  相似文献

BackgroundConsidering the affecting role of environmental factors including trace elements and heavy metals on the upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, there is paucity of empirical research in tissue evaluations.ObjectivesThe present study aimed to measure the tissue content of some trace elements and heavy metals such as zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), tin (Sn), copper (Cu), aluminum (Al), lead (Pb), and iron (Fe) in esophagus and gastric cancerous tissues compared to the adjacent healthy tissues.MethodsIn a cross-sectional study, the aforementioned trace elements and heavy metals were evaluated among patients with esophagus and gastric cancers. During endoscopy, multiple samples were taken from cancerous lesions and the adjacent healthy tissues. The classic flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) method was employed as the study framework.ResultsFifty patients with the mean age of 53.92 ± 8.73 were enrolled in the current study. Thirteen patients suffered from esophageal cancer and thirty-seven patients were afflicted with gastric cancer. The results revealed significant differences in the median concentrations of Zn, Cr, Sn and, Cu (P < 0.05) between the two groups. Although there were no significant changes in the tissue content in the esophageal samples, in the median concentrations of Zn, Cr and, Sn (P < 0.05) in gastric tissues, significant differences were observed. Further, the results indicated that gender enacted an affecting role in the level of some trace elements and heavy metals.ConclusionThe tissue contents of some elements were altered in gastric and esophageal cancers; this difference may reflect the underlying mechanism of cellular changing during the tumorigenesis or direct exposure of these elements. It seems that under the shade of other coexisting risk factors, larger cohort studies are suggested to be conducted to investigate other probable aspects in this area of interest.  相似文献

The aims of the study were to determine manganese (Mn), iron (Fe) and strontium (Sr) concentrations in fox bone samples from north-western Poland and to examine the relationships between the bone Mn, Fe and Sr concentrations and the sex and age of the foxes. In the studied samples of fox cartilage, cartilage with adjacent compact bone, compact bone and spongy bone, the concentrations of the analysed metals had the following descending order: Fe > Sr > Mn. The only exception was in compact bone, in which the concentrations were arranged in the order Sr > Fe > Mn. Manganese concentrations were significantly higher in cartilage, compact bone and cartilage with compact bone than in spongy bone. Iron concentrations were higher in cartilage and spongy bone compared with compact bone. Strontium concentrations were greater in compact bone than in cartilage and spongy bone. The manganese, iron and strontium concentrations in the same type of bone material in many cases correlated with each other, with the strongest correlation (r?>?0.70) between Mn and Fe in almost all types of samples. In addition, concentrations of the same metals in different bone materials were closely correlated for Mn and Fe in cartilage and cartilage with adjacent compact bone, and for Sr in compact bone and cartilage with compact bone. In the fox from NW Poland, there were no statistically significant differences in Mn, Fe and Sr in any of the types of bone material between the sexes and immature and adult foxes.  相似文献

In this study, osseous tissue was examined in normal adult population that has inhabited areas by the Croatian Adriatic Sea. The most of such studies have shown that women are prone to lose bone connectedness, while men are predisposed to be a stronger constitution and they start with greater bone mass, though. Bone samples from two different anatomic sites were analyzed. The crista iliaca and the lumbar vertebra represent functionally different organs too. We wanted to consider weather the same age- and gender-related changes affect these two organs due to normal aging. Static histomorphometry was used to quantify involution changes in the trabecular bone. Results showed that involution process more severely affects women than men. Age-related structural changes were more prominent in lumbar vertebra than in iliac crest bone. Severe structural changes in lumbar vertebra could subsequently lead to a dysfunctional and deformed vertebral column. Therefore, iliac crest bone biopsies could hardly explain involution process that affects lumbar spine.  相似文献
