We fill a gap in understanding wetland vegetation diversity and relationship with environmental determinants in Bulgarian high mountains. A total of 615 phytosociological samples were taken from springs, mires, wet meadows and tall-forb habitats throughout Bulgaria, of which 234 relevés are from mire and spring vegetation above timberline. The vegetation was classified by TWINSPAN and the resulting vegetation types were reproduced by the formal definitions using the combination of Cocktail species groups based on phi-coefficient of joint co-occurrence of the species. Nine vegetation types of springs and fens have been clearly delimited above the timberline. All vegetation types include Balkan endemic species, the representation of which varies. Fens generally harbour more Balkan endemics than do springs, with the exception of species-poor high-altitude Drepanocladetum exannulati. The gradient structure of the vegetation was revealed by DCA and by CCA with forward selection of environmental factors. The major determinants of vegetation variation strongly differ above and below the timberline and likewise between springs and fens. The base-richness gradient controls the floristic variation of Bulgarian submontane fens, whereas the complete data set including both submontane and subalpine fens is governed by the altitude gradient from lowland and basin fens to subalpine fens rich in Balkan endemics. When focusing on sites above the timberline only, the first DCA axis separates fens from springs without organic matter. The major species turnover in springs follows the variation in water pH and mineral content in water, whereas fen vegetation variation is primarily controlled by succession gradient of peat accumulation. Altitude remains an important factor in all cases. Weak correlation between water pH and conductivity was found. This correlation was even statistically insignificant in fens above the timberline. Water pH is not influenced by mineral richness in Bulgarian high mountains, since it is buffered by decomposition of organic matter in fens. In springs, pH reaches maximum values due to strong aeration caused by water flow. The plant species richness decreases significantly with increasing altitude. The increase of species richness towards circumneutral pH, often found in mires, was not confirmed in Bulgarian high mountains. The correlation between species richness and pH was significant only when arctic-alpine species and allied European high-mountain species were considered separately. The richness of boreal species was independent on pH. Some of them had their optima shifted to more acidic fens as compared to regions below the timberline. Our results suggest that subalpine spring and fen vegetation should be analysed separately with respect to vegetation-environment correlations. Separate analysis of fens below and above timberline is quite appropriate.  相似文献

The relationships between vegetation components, surface water chemistry and peat chemistry from 23 fens in boreal Alberta, Canada, substantiate important differences along the poor to rich fen gradient. Each of the three fen types have their own characteristic species. The extreme-rich fens are characterized by Calliergon trifarium, Drepanocladus revolvens, Scirpus hudsonianus, S. cespitosus, Scorpidium scorpioides, and Tofieldia glutinosa. Moderate-rich fens are characterized by Brachythecium mildeanum, Carex diandra, Drepanocladus vernicosus, D. aduncus, and D. polycarpus. Poor fens are characterized by Carex pauciflora, Drepanocladus exannulatus, Sphagnum angustifolium, S. jensenii, and S. majus. Moderate-rich fens have fewer species in common with poor fens than with extreme-rich fens, while species richness is highest in the moderate-rich fens and lowest in poor fens. Variation in vascular plant occurrence appears to be more associated with nutrient levels, while bryophytes are more affected by changes in acidity and mineral elements. Based on chemical criteria, the three fen types are clearly separated by surface water pH, calcium, magnesium, and conductivity, but are less clearly differentiated by the nitrogen and phosphorus components of the surface waters. Moderate-rich fens are chemically variable both temporally and spatially, whereas poor fens and extreme-rich fens are more stable ecosystems. Whereas components of alkalinity-acidity are the most important factors that distinguish the three fen types in western Canada, nutrient concentrations in the surface waters generally do not differ appreciably in the three fen types.  相似文献

Dynamic hydrochemical and vegetation gradients in fens   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The mixing of groundwater, river water and precipitation was studied in a discharge and a recharge fen in the Vechtplassen area, the Netherlands. The aim of the study was to characterize relationships between vegetation in fens, the chemical composition of the fen water, and the hydrologic regimes. We were particularly interested in the influence of polluted water from the river Vecht on vegetation and nutrient dynamics. Analyses were made for Ionic Ratio (IR = 2[Ca]/(2[Ca] + [Cl]), molar concentrations) and Electrical Conductivity (EC), all indices of the relative importance of each of the three main water sources: groundwater, river water and precipitation.During winter, water in the discharge fen was strongly influenced by calcium-rich groundwater (high IR, moderate EC), while the recharge fen was entirely fed by precipitation (low IR and EC). During summer, river water with a moderate IR and high EC infiltrated the fens and caused a dramatic change in the chemical composition of the fen water. In the discharge fen, infiltration occurred predominantly as sheetflow, causing inundation of the entire fen surface. River water infiltration affected the surface peat of this fen more severely than deeper peat layers. Spatial variation in water chemistry along the transect was small, and only one type of plant community was found. In the recharge fen, river water infiltration occurred in subsurface water, and rainwater that had accumulated during the winter persisted in the central parts of the fen. Gradients in fen water chemistry were correlated with the observed distribution of three plant associations. Differences in water chemistry could also be attributed to intra-site variation in the relative importance of the three water sources. In both fens, there was considerable temporal variation in the chemical composition of the fen water, clearly related to dynamics of the hydrologic regime, particularly infiltration of river water. There are indications that characteristic mesotraphent fen plant communities are negatively affected by water from the river Vecht. River water supply should therefore be avoided as much as possible if these fen plant communities are to be maintained.  相似文献

The abiotic conditions and fen vegetation in three lowland mires were analysed. Two of these mires are in the Netherlands. They have deteriorated considerably as a result of human pressure. One mire complex is in Poland. Its hydrology is almost undisturbed. The variation in the water composition in the fens was associated with the variation in the amount of regional groundwater discharge originating from the uplands, and to a lesser extent by the infiltration of polluted water pumped into the fens. The 26 vegetation types ranged from poor fen to eutrophic reedland. Most types were typical for only one region. There were clear differences between the three regions. Both the species composition and the water quality for the vegetation types indicated that the fens in the Vecht river plain are eutrophicated, whereas the fens in Northwestern Overijssel suffer from acidification. The Biebrza valley fens are well developed and are mainly fed by fresh calcareous groundwater.Stepwise logistic regression performed on 28 fen species revealed that the hydrochemical variables explained only a part of the variance: the regional variable area explained a considerable amount of the variance for most species. In 27% of the cases it was possible to fit an optimum curve for the species response to relevant hydrochemical variables. Monotonic curves could be fitted in 64% of the cases; mostly they described the response to variables in a way that is supported by ecological literature. It was concluded that the dataset should be constructed differently to enable the calculation of generally applicable standards.  相似文献

The understanding of succession from rich fen to poorer fen types requires knowledge of changes in hydrology, water composition, peat chemistry and peat accumulation in the successional process. Water flow patterns, water levels and water chemistry, mineralisation rates and nutrient concentrations in above-ground vegetation were studied along a extreme-rich fen-moderate-rich fen gradient at Biebrza (Poland). The extreme-rich fen was a temporary groundwater discharge area, while in the moderate-rich fen groundwater flows laterally towards the river. The moderate-rich fen has a rainwater lens in spring and significant lower concentrations of calcium and higher concentrations of phosphate in the surface water. Mineralisation rates for N, P and K were higher in the moderate-rich fen. Phosphorus concentrations in plant material of the moderate-rich fen were higher than in the extreme-rich fen, but concentrations of N and K in plant material did not differ between both fen types. Water level dynamics and macro-remains of superficial peat deposits were similar in both fen types. We concluded that the differences observed in the moderate-rich and the extreme-rich fens were caused by subtile differences in the proportion of water sources at the peat surface (rainwater and calcareous groundwater, respectively). Development of an extreme-rich fen into a moderate-rich fen was ascribed to recent changes in river hydrology possibly associated with a change in management practices. The observed differences in P-availability between the fen types did not result in significantly different biomass. Moreover, biomass production in both fen types was primarily N-limited although P-availability was restricted too in the extreme-rich fen. Aulacomnium palustre, the dominant moss in the moderate-rich fen, might be favoured in competition because of its broad nutrient tolerance and its quick establishment after disturbance. It might outcompete low productive rich fen species which were shown to be N-limited in both fens. We present a conceptual model of successional pathways of rich fen vegetation in the Biebrza region.  相似文献

Abstract. On the Vecht river plain (western Netherlands), small fens, remnants of a large mesotrophic wetland bordering a moraine, of 1 to 5 ha are found in a man-made matrix of lakes and pastures. The regional position of the fens, local position of sampling sites, composition of the vegetation and local hydrological variables were measured. Polders in the river plain produce a complex hydrology obscuring the regional zonation between moraine and river. Water supply and species composition are determined more by a site's regional than local position. High-productivity reedlands are abundant close to the river. Carex paniculata reedlands receive large amounts of river water, which gives their fen water a high K+ concentration. Low-productivity C. diandra fens and litter fens have their optimum closer to the moraine. C. diandra fens are fed mainly by inflowing nutrient-poor ground- or surface water; litter fens receive primarily rainwater. Nutrients in fen water and in peat are lowest in C. diandra and C. lasiocarpa fens, but do not differ significantly between the communities. In both, iron seems to be more important than calcium in reducing phosphate solubility. Iron richness in the C. diandra fens is caused by present inflows of ground- or surface water, while in C. lasiocarpa fens, which succeed the former, iron richness is the result of historical inflows.  相似文献

The composition, structure and above-ground biomass production of floodplain- and fen-vegetation of the Biebrza valley (N.E. Poland) are strongly correlated with water flow characteristics and water chemistry. Groundwater flow and flooding are the major conditioning factors for the vegetation in the valley. The highly productive vegetation is restricted to the dynamic floodplain where it receives nutrient-rich river water during spring floods. The non-flooded parts of the valley contain rich fen and transitional fen vegetation that have a lower biomass production. The rich fen is fed by calcareous and phosphate-poor groundwater coming from the moraines. In the transitional fen, where rainwater infiltrates, phosphate availability is large.Annual nutrient accumulation in the above-ground biomass of the floodplains is estimated to be about 8–9 § 103 kg/km2 for N and K and 1 § 103 kg/km2 for P. For the less-productive fens these figures are 60 to 70% lower. The total annual nutrient accumulation by vegetation of both floodplains and fens for the entire Biebrza valley is estimated to be about 5600 × 103 kg N, 560 × 103 kg P and 4500 × 103 kg K. This is high compared to the loading rates in the river near to where the Biebrza River discharges into the Narew River (N-, P- and K-loading rates are c. 900, 200 and 3000 × 103 kg/y, respectively). This implies that floodplain and fen vegetation are important sinks for nutrients, especially for N and P.This paper was presented at the INTECOL IV International Wetlands Conference in Columbus, Ohio, 1992, as part of a session organized by Prof. S. E. Jørgensen and sponsored by the International Lake Environment Committee.Corresponding Editor: J. Kvt  相似文献

In temperate mountains, fens have been reported as relict habitats subject to geographical fragmentation and broad climatic gradients, but few studies have analyzed the influence of these factors on plant diversity. Here we investigate the effect of isolation on the vegetation diversity of rich fens (Caricion davallianae) in the mountains of the Iberian Peninsula, the distribution limit of these habitats in south-western Europe. We used plot-based vegetation data from the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian mountain range to evaluate their regional species-pool, occurrence of specialists, beta-diversity and the effect of geo-climatic variables on their species-richness and species-composition. We found a lower ratio of rare specialists in the Pyrenees than in the Cantabrian range, but similar estimates in the species pools, total species-richness per plot and beta-diversity. The isolation of the two mountain regions resulted in different species assemblages best predicted by summer precipitation and bedrock types, showing region-based differences in the response of vegetation and plant specialists to the environment. The tighter correlation between local climate and diversity estimates in the Cantabrian range suggests relict character of rich fens in that region, where climatic conditions have restricted local distribution of formerly more widely distributed specialists. Although there is no relevant evidence of vegetation impoverishment in that region, historical isolation has probably resulted in the existence of fragmentary plant communities. We conclude that fen vegetation may experience long-time persistence in climatically sub-optimal mountain refugia, but related plant specialists may be sensitive to climatic changes and subject to the extinction of local populations.  相似文献

Stream water dissolved organic carbon (DOC) correlates positively with soil organic carbon (SOC) in many biomes. Does this relationship hold in a small geographic region when variations of temperature, precipitation and vegetation are driven by a significant altitudinal gradient? We examined the spatial connectivity between concentrations of DOC in headwater stream and contents of riparian SOC and water-soluble soil organic carbon (WSOC), riparian soil C:N ratio, and temperature in four vegetation types along an altitudinal gradient in the Wuyi Mountains, China. Our analyses showed that annual mean concentrations of headwater stream DOC were lower in alpine meadow (AM) than in subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest (EBF), coniferous forest (CF), and subalpine dwarf forest (SDF). Headwater stream DOC concentrations were negatively correlated with riparian SOC as well as WSOC contents, and were unrelated to riparian soil C:N ratio. Our findings suggest that DOC concentrations in headwater streams are affected by different factors at regional and local scales. The dilution effect of higher precipitation and adsorption of soil DOC to higher soil clay plus silt content at higher elevation may play an important role in causing lower DOC concentrations in AM stream of the Wuyi Mountains. Our results suggest that upscaling and downscaling of the drivers of DOC export from forested watersheds when exploring the response of carbon flux to climatic change or other drivers must done with caution.  相似文献

Ecological patterns of mollusc assemblages and vegetation in relation to water chemistry, water regime, nutrient availability and climate were studied in eastern Polish lowland fens. Our goal was to examine if major compositional changes differ for molluscs and vegetation under the joint influence of multiple ecological gradients. Altogether 32 fen sites were investigated in 2010–2011, and analyzed using metric multidimensional scaling, cluster analysis and generalized additive models. Two major gradients driving the differences in mollusc species composition were revealed. The main direction of compositional changes was associated with the water table gradient, governing a species turnover from inundated and strongly water-logged sites occupied mostly by aquatic mollusc species, to moderately wet sites with the predominance of fen and meadow species. The second most important gradient for molluscs was that of mineral richness. For vegetation, three major gradients explained the changes in species composition. The highest importance was assigned to the nitrogen-to-phosphorus availability gradient (defined as a shift from N-limited to P-limited vegetation), followed by the water table gradient, and the mineral richness gradient. Our results demonstrate that the impact of mineral richness gradient, which has been often reported as the major determinant of compositional changes of fen molluscs and vegetation, can be exceeded by other ecological gradients of comparable variation. We also document for the first time that the main species turnover of fen vegetation is not accompanied by the analogous change in species composition of mollusc assemblages, due to a different sensitivity of these taxa to particular environmental factors (i.e. water level dynamics and type of nutrient limitation).  相似文献

Small headwater fens at high elevations exist in the dry climatic regime of western Colorado, despite increasing demands for water development since the 1800’s. Fens on Grand Mesa have accumulated plant material as peat for thousands of years due to cold temperatures and consistently saturated soils. The peatlands maintain unique plant communities, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, and carbon storage. We located and differentiated 88 fens from 15 wet meadows and 2 marshes on Grand Mesa. Field work included determining vegetation, soils, moisture regimes, and impacts from human activities. All fens were groundwater-supported systems that occurred in depressions and slopes within sedimentary landslide and volcanic glacial till landscapes. Fens occupied 400 ha or less than 1 % of the 46,845 ha research area and ranged in size from 1 to 46 ha. Peat water pH in undisturbed sites ranged from 4.3 to 7.1. Most fens had plant communities dominated by sedges (Carex) with an understory of brown mosses. Variation in vegetation was controlled by stand wetness, water table level, organic C, conductivity (EC), and temperature °C. Fen soils ranged from 13.6 to 44.1 % organic C with a mean of 30.3 %. Species diversity in fens was restricted by cold short growing seasons, stressful anaerobic conditions, and disturbance. Multivariate analysis was used to analyze relationships between vegetation, environmental, and impact variables. Stand wetness, water table level, OC, electrical conductivity (EC), and temperature were used to analyze vegetation variance in undisturbed fens, wet meadows, and marshes. Vegetation composition in impacted fens was influenced by flooding, sedimentation, stand wetness, water table level, OC, EC, and temperature. Hydrologically modified fens supported 58 plant species compared to 101 species in undisturbed fens. Analysis of historical 1936–2007 aerial photographs and condition scalars helped quantify impacts of human activities in fens as well as vegetation changes. Fourteen fens had evidence of peat subsidence, from organic soil collapse, blocks of peat in the margins, soil instability, and differences in surface peat height between the fen soil surface and the annually flooded soil surface. Of 374 ha of fens in the Grand Mesa study area, 294 ha (79 %) have been impacted by human activities such as ditching, drainage, flooding, or vehicular rutting. Many fens had little restoration potential due to severe hydrological and peat mass impacts, water rights, or the cost of restoration.  相似文献

Several landscape restoration alternatives were evaluated in the Gorecht area, a cultivated river plain in the northern part of the Netherlands. A landscape analysis was performed to investigate the hydrological functioning of this area. Groundwater composition in the area was assessed by using distribution patterns of indicative plant species. Results proved to be consistent with an interpolation of actual data of the groundwater composition. Groundwater flow was simulated with hydrological models to explain the observed patterns in water chemistry. It appeared that upwelling Ca-rich groundwater is now absent in the area, contrary to the past situation. Because a constant supply of Ca-rich water is an essential condition for mesotraphent fen vegetation, we concluded that under the present conditions the regeneration prospects for these vegetation types are poor. We suggest that the plan to regenerate groundwater-fed fens be abandoned for a plan to create surface-water-fed marshes.  相似文献

Mires with attributes similar to the patterned fens of boreal continental regions have recently been reported from northern Scotland. This paper reports on the vegetation and water chemistry of 18 of these sites. Most of the 18 mires displayed remarkable uniformity in their vegetation, with Carex lasiocarpa being a main character species. Major variation of plant communities is associated with microtopographical niches, similar to those found on ombrotrophic mire systems and secondarily with pH and conductivity of surface waters. Nine vegetation noda are described and compared with existing phytosociological associations and National Vegetation Classification (NVC) communities. The dominant Sphagnum - Carex communities are intermediate between the Oxycocco-Sphagnetea and the Caricion lasiocarpae and are thus difficult to assign to existing associations or to NVC communities. Although there is a large variation in pH of surface waters (3.9–6.6), mean measurements for terrestrial and aquatic communities are 5.12 and 5.51 respectively. pH levels are comparable with poor fen systems elsewhere in Britain and slightly higher than patterned fens in continental regions of Europe and North America. The vegeta-tional and chemical attributes of these sites therefore confirm the existence of true patterned fen systems in the British Isles.  相似文献

Spring fens are isolated treeless wetlands of a high conservation value. Their environmental conditions are strongly related to their groundwater chemistry, which controls species distribution within various groups of organisms. Clitellates, a dominant group of non-insect aquatic fauna, however, have never been studied in these habitats. It is unclear from previous studies to what extent the distribution of aquatic non-insect taxa reflects water chemistry rather than the substrate structure. We studied 34 spring fens sampled in 17 isolated sites in the Western Carpathian Mountains to determine mainly the effects of water chemistry and substrate structure on variation in species richness and composition of clitellate assemblages as examples of the non-insect fauna. A total of 34 taxa were found, with 3–15 taxa collected per sample. Species richness was negatively correlated with water mineral concentration measured as water electric conductivity (r = −0.57, P < 0.001) and positively with TOC (r = 0.60, P < 0.001). Surprisingly, the lowest number of taxa was found in calcareous fens and richness increased towards Sphagnum-fens. There was a species turnover related to changes in mineral richness and substrate characters. The main change of species composition was promoted by changes in substrate structure. The second gradient of species composition was linked with the amount of nutrients, moisture, and dominance of sphagna, and was associated with an increase of eurytopic species in fens with high nutrient availability. It was difficult to separate the effects of water chemistry and substrate on clitellate species distributions owing to the fact that variation in tufa precipitation and vegetation was driven by water chemistry changes. This study presented the first quantitative data on fen clitellate assemblages, which appear to have an unusual pattern of species richness. In contrast to plants and molluscs, calcareous fens appeared to be a harsh environment for clitellate species. Only few specialized species, mainly Trichodrilus strandi, were able to establish viable populations. The significant effect of water chemistry on clitellate distribution patterns raises questions about the direct influence of water chemistry on non-insect aquatic taxa, which have previously been considered to be mostly determined by substrate characteristics.  相似文献

Northern mires (fens and bogs) have significant climate feedbacks and contribute to biodiversity, providing habitats to specialized biota. Many studies have found drying and degradation of bogs in response to climate change, while northern fens have received less attention. Rich fens are particularly important to biodiversity, but subject to global climate change, fen ecosystems may change via direct response of vegetation or indirectly by hydrological changes. With repeated sampling over the past 20 years, we aim to reveal trends in hydrology and vegetation in a pristine boreal fen with gradient from rich to poor fen and bog vegetation. We resampled 203 semi‐permanent plots and compared water‐table depth (WTD), pH, concentrations of mineral elements, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), plant species occurrences, community structure, and vegetation types between 1998 and 2018. In the study area, the annual mean temperature rose by 1.0°C and precipitation by 46 mm, in 20‐year periods prior to sampling occasions. We found that wet fen vegetation decreased, while bog and poor fen vegetation increased significantly. This reflected a trend of increasing abundance of common, generalist hummock species at the expense of fen specialist species. Changes were the most pronounced in high pH plots, where Sphagnum mosses had significantly increased in plot frequency, cover, and species richness. Changes of water chemistry were mainly insignificant in concentration levels and spatial patterns. Although indications toward drier conditions were found in vegetation, WTD had not consistently increased, instead, our results revealed complex dynamics of WTD as depending on vegetation changes. Overall, we found significant trend in vegetation, conforming to common succession pattern from rich to poor fen and bog vegetation. Our results suggest that responses intrinsic to vegetation, such as increased productivity or altered species interactions, may be more significant than indirect effects via local hydrology to the ecosystem response to climate warming.  相似文献

1. Running waters, including associated riparian areas, are embraced by international legal frameworks outlining targets for the preservation, protection and improvement of the quality of the environment. Interactions between stream and river processes and riparian habitats have not received much attention in the management of stream ecosystems, and integrated measures that consider both the ecological status of streams and rivers (sensu EU Water Framework Directive, WFD) and the conservation status of riparian habitats and species (sensu EU Habitats Directive, HD) are rare. 2. Here, we analysed the influence of stream size, morphology and chemical water characteristics for the distribution of water‐dependent terrestrial habitat types, i.e. alkaline fens, periodically inundated meadows and meadows in riparian areas in Denmark using an extensive data set covering a total of 254 stream reaches. A species‐based classification model was used to translate species lists into a standardised interpretation of habitat types protected by the HD in Denmark. 3. No size dependency was found regarding the distribution of fen and meadow vegetation. Instead, the distribution of fen and meadow vegetation was strongly affected by the morphology of the streams. Alkaline fens, periodically inundated meadows and meadows occurred six, five and four times, respectively, less frequently along channelised compared with natural stream reaches. Our results indicate that stream channelisation strongly interfered with the natural hydrology of riparian areas, affecting conditions needed to sustain protected fen and meadow communities. 4. We also found that water chemistry strongly influenced the occurrence of fen and meadow vegetation in riparian areas. The probability of finding fen and meadow vegetation was reduced when total phosphorus (TP) concentration exceeded 40–50 μg P L?1, whereas meadow vegetation responded less strongly to TP. 5. Our findings highlight the importance of restoring hydrology of riparian areas to improve conditions for fen and meadow vegetation, but also that the water chemistry should be considered when measures that increase hydrological connectivity result in an increase in the probability of flooding.  相似文献
