The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of manual application of the grating orientation task (GOT), as currently used in fundamental and clinical research. Six examiners tested 12 subjects following recommendations of the literature. The results show that the normal force applied with the domes on the skin varied from one examiner to the next. Nevertheless, it did not affect the performance of the subjects, whose thresholds were consistent with those reported in the literature. This study highlights the inter-examiner reliability in the manual application of this test and validates this procedure.  相似文献

It has been suggested that minimisation of energy cost is one of the primary determinants of wheelchair designs. Wheel camber is one important parameter related to wheelchair design and its angle may affect usability during manual propulsion. However, there is little available literature addressing the effect of wheel camber on the mechanical energy or power flow involved in manual wheelchair propulsion. Twelve normal subjects (mean age, 22.3 years; SD, 1.6 years) participated in this study. A video-tracking system and an instrumented wheel were used to collect 3D kinematic and kinetic data. Wheel camber of 0° and 15° was chosen to examine the difference between mechanical power and power flow of the upper extremity during manual wheelchair propulsion. The work calculated from power flow and the discrepancy between the mechanical work and power flow work of upper extremity had significantly greater values with increased camber. The upper arm had a larger active muscle power compared with that in the forearm and hand segments. While propelling the increased camber, the magnitude of both the proximal and distal joint power and proximal muscle power was increased in all three segments. While the propelling wheel with camber not only needs a greater energy cost but also there is greater energy loss.  相似文献

The strength of the evidence for population-level handedness in the great apes is a topic of considerable debate, yet there have been few studies of handedness in orangutans. We conducted a study of manual lateralization in a captive group of eight orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) ranking the degrees of manual preference according to a defined framework. We analyzed five behavioral patterns: eat (one- and two-handed), make/modify tool, oral tool-use, and manual tool-use. Although some individuals showed significant manual preferences for one or more tasks, at the group-level both one-handed and two-handed eating, oral tool-use, and make/modify tool were ranked at level 1 (unlateralized). Manual tool-use was ranked at level 2, with four subjects demonstrating significant hand preferences, but no group-level bias to the right or left. Four subjects also showed hand specialization to the right or left across several tasks. These results are consistent with most previous studies of manual preference in orangutans. The emergence of manual lateralization in orangutans may relate to more complex manipulative tasks. We hypothesize that more challenging manual tasks elicit stronger hand preferences.  相似文献

Spinal cord segmentation is a developing area of research intended to aid the processing and interpretation of advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). For example, high resolution three-dimensional volumes can be segmented to provide a measurement of spinal cord atrophy. Spinal cord segmentation is difficult due to the variety of MRI contrasts and the variation in human anatomy. In this study we propose a new method of spinal cord segmentation based on one-dimensional template matching and provide several metrics that can be used to compare with other segmentation methods. A set of ground-truth data from 10 subjects was manually-segmented by two different raters. These ground truth data formed the basis of the segmentation algorithm. A user was required to manually initialize the spinal cord center-line on new images, taking less than one minute. Template matching was used to segment the new cord and a refined center line was calculated based on multiple centroids within the segmentation. Arc distances down the spinal cord and cross-sectional areas were calculated. Inter-rater validation was performed by comparing two manual raters (n = 10). Semi-automatic validation was performed by comparing the two manual raters to the semi-automatic method (n = 10). Comparing the semi-automatic method to one of the raters yielded a Dice coefficient of 0.91 +/- 0.02 for ten subjects, a mean distance between spinal cord center lines of 0.32 +/- 0.08 mm, and a Hausdorff distance of 1.82 +/- 0.33 mm. The absolute variation in cross-sectional area was comparable for the semi-automatic method versus manual segmentation when compared to inter-rater manual segmentation. The results demonstrate that this novel segmentation method performs as well as a manual rater for most segmentation metrics. It offers a new approach to study spinal cord disease and to quantitatively track changes within the spinal cord in an individual case and across cohorts of subjects.  相似文献

The evolutionary origin of human language and its neurobiological foundations has long been the object of intense scientific debate. Although a number of theories have been proposed, one particularly contentious model suggests that human language evolved from a manual gestural communication system in a common ape-human ancestor. Consistent with a gestural origins theory are data indicating that chimpanzees intentionally and referentially communicate via manual gestures, and the production of manual gestures, in conjunction with vocalizations, activates the chimpanzee Broca's area homologue--a region in the human brain that is critical for the planning and execution of language. However, it is not known if this activity observed in the chimpanzee Broca's area is the result of the chimpanzees producing manual communicative gestures, communicative sounds, or both. This information is critical for evaluating the theory that human language evolved from a strictly manual gestural system. To this end, we used positron emission tomography (PET) to examine the neural metabolic activity in the chimpanzee brain. We collected PET data in 4 subjects, all of whom produced manual communicative gestures. However, 2 of these subjects also produced so-called attention-getting vocalizations directed towards a human experimenter. Interestingly, only the two subjects that produced these attention-getting sounds showed greater mean metabolic activity in the Broca's area homologue as compared to a baseline scan. The two subjects that did not produce attention-getting sounds did not. These data contradict an exclusive "gestural origins" theory for they suggest that it is vocal signaling that selectively activates the Broca's area homologue in chimpanzees. In other words, the activity observed in the Broca's area homologue reflects the production of vocal signals by the chimpanzees, suggesting that this critical human language region was involved in vocal signaling in the common ancestor of both modern humans and chimpanzees.  相似文献

Patients with Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) have abnormal digital vasoconstriction in response to cold. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of cooling on sensory perception and manual performance in healthy male subjects and subjects with RP. There were two groups of subjects with primary RP: 12 subjects fulfilled the criteria of Lewis (L) and the other 12 the more critical criteria of Maricq (M). Control group (C) consisted of 19 healthy men. Subjects were exposed to 5 degrees C for 60 min. Skin temperatures were measured. Finger dexterity, pinch strength, abduction/adduction of fingers, pressure perception threshold and vibration perception threshold were tested during the exposure every 15 min. At the beginning of the exposure the mean (S.E.) finger temperature was 2.5 (1.2) degrees C (P<0.05) lower in M than in C. Manual performance and sensory perception were impaired due to the cooling, the impairment being significantly greater in M than in C. Responses of L were between those of M and C. In a given finger temperature vibration and pressure sensibility and manual performance were lower in M and L than in C. In conclusion, cold exposure decreased sensory perception and manual performance in the subjects with RP to a lower level than in the healthy subjects. Non-thermal factors may also decrease performance in RP.  相似文献

Purpose

To develop EdgeSelect, a semi-automatic method for the segmentation of retinal layers in spectral domain optical coherence tomography images, and to compare the segmentation results with a manual method.

Methods

SD-OCT (Heidelberg Spectralis) scans of 28 eyes (24 patients with diabetic macular edema and 4 normal subjects) were imported into a customized MATLAB application, and were manually segmented by three graders at the layers corresponding to the inner limiting membrane (ILM), the inner segment/ellipsoid interface (ISe), the retinal/retinal pigment epithelium interface (RPE), and the Bruch''s membrane (BM). The scans were then segmented independently by the same graders using EdgeSelect, a semi-automated method allowing the graders to guide/correct the layer segmentation interactively. The inter-grader reproducibility and agreement in locating the layer positions between the manual and EdgeSelect methods were assessed and compared using the Wilcoxon signed rank test.

Results

The inter-grader reproducibility using the EdgeSelect method for retinal layers varied from 0.15 to 1.21 µm, smaller than those using the manual method (3.36–6.43 µm). The Wilcoxon test indicated the EdgeSelect method had significantly better reproducibility than the manual method. The agreement between the manual and EdgeSelect methods in locating retinal layers ranged from 0.08 to 1.32 µm. There were small differences between the two methods in locating the ILM (p = 0.012) and BM layers (p<0.001), but these were statistically indistinguishable in locating the ISe (p = 0.896) and RPE layers (p = 0.771).

Conclusions

The EdgeSelect method resulted in better reproducibility and good agreement with a manual method in a set of eyes of normal subjects and with retinal disease, suggesting that this approach is feasible for OCT image analysis in clinical trials.  相似文献

We assessed the manual preferences of 12 De Brazza's monkeys ( Cercopithecus neglectus ) in spontaneous feeding situations and in two different coordinated bimanual tasks that were not visually guided. We recorded the hand used by each subject for 22 spontaneous activities, hand and digits use while extracting peanut butter from a hollow tube (tube task) and the hand used to extract candies from hanging plastic balls (ball task). Spontaneous activities revealed individual manual preferences but no population-level biases. For both experimental tasks, all subjects were lateralized in their hand use. We found a left bias at the group level for the tube task, but no group-level asymmetry for the ball task. Experimental tasks induced greater strength of laterality than did spontaneous activities. Although the size of our sample did not allow us to draw any conclusions concerning manual preference at the population level, this study stresses the importance of coordinated bimanual tasks to reveal manual laterality in non-human primates.  相似文献

In recent years, there has been an explosion of fluorescence microscopy studies of live cells in the literature. The analysis of the images obtained in these studies often requires labor-intensive manual annotation to extract meaningful information. In this study, we explore the utility of a neural network approach to recognize, classify, and select plasma membranes in high-resolution images, thus greatly speeding up data analysis and reducing the need for personnel training for highly repetitive tasks. Two different strategies are tested: 1) a semantic segmentation strategy, and 2) a sequential application of an object detector followed by a semantic segmentation network. Multiple network architectures are evaluated for each strategy, and the best performing solutions are combined and implemented in the Recognition Of Cellular Membranes software. We show that images annotated manually and with the Recognition Of Cellular Membranes software yield identical results by comparing Förster resonance energy transfer binding curves for the membrane protein fibroblast growth factor receptor 3. The approach that we describe in this work can be applied to other image selection tasks in cell biology.  相似文献

We report a case of preputial myiasis in a child who presented with painful penile swelling suggestive of balanoposthitis. Treatment consisted of manual extraction of the worm followed by circumcision. Parasitologic study of the worm revealed a stage-three larva of Cordylobia anthropophaga. Through this case report and a review of the literature, we discuss the epidemiologic, diagnostic and therapeutic features of this disease.  相似文献

Although there is a vast literature on laterality of hand-use in nonhuman primates, the Colobinae have been notably overlooked. Ten manual activities of differing complexity were studied in five male and five female adult Hanuman langurs (Presbytis entellus) from a well habituated, wild population at Ramnagar, in southern Nepal. The activities recorded were carry, eat, hit, hold, idle, manipulate, reach, retrieve, self-groom and social groom. This study aimed to examine handedness across tasks and across subjects in a natural population. The overall result was a lack of preference for subjects and patterns. Only in the eating activity did four individuals show significant hand preference, though they were not unidirectional. Eat seemed to be loosely associated with hold due to the requirements of the strata which the monkeys utilize. These results suggest that hand use is unlateralized in P. entellus. Those individuals exhibiting some hand preferences can be viewed as statistical exceptions or perhaps subject to experiential differences. Currently, literature is integrated in systems biology studies in three ways. Hand-curated pathways have been sufficient for assembling models in numerous studies. Second, literature is frequently accessed in a derived form, such as the concepts represented by the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and Gene Ontologies (GO), or functional relationships captured in protein-protein interaction (PPI) databases; both of these are convenient, consistent reductions of more complex concepts expressed as free text in the literature. Moreover, their contents are easily integrated into computational processes required for dealing with large data sets. Last, mining text directly for specific types of information is on the rise as text analytics methods become more accurate and accessible. These uses of literature, specifically manual curation, derived concepts captured in ontologies and databases, and indirect and direct application of text mining, will be discussed as they pertain to systems biology.  相似文献

Longstanding (chronic) adductor-related groin pain syndrome is a widely common problem for athletes in many sports activities which often drastically reduces player activity and performance. The first choice in therapeutic treatment is conservative therapy. The objective of this study is to provide a systematic review regarding conservative treatment for longstanding adductor-related groin pain syndrome present in literature today. Furthermore, this study aims to give a critical vision of the current state of the art of the considered topic. After screening 234 articles, 19 studies following the inclusion criteria were included and summarized in this current systematic review and seven different types of therapeutic interventions were described. Compression clothing therapy, manual therapy together with strengthening exercise and prolotherapy were the therapeutic interventions which showed both the greatest level of strength of evidence (Moderate) and grade of recommendation (D). The remaining four types of therapeutic interventions i.e.: corticoid injection, platelet rich plasma therapy, intra-tissue percutaneous electrolysis and pulse-dose radiofrequency, showed both lower levels of strength of evidence (Conflicting) and grade of recommendation (C). In conclusion the literature available on the conservative treatment for longstanding adductor-related groin pain syndrome is limited and characterized by a low level of evidence. Therefore, our recommendation is to refer only to the few studies with higher level of evidence and at the same time to encourage further research in this area. The intervention showing the greater level of strength of evidence, and the greater grade of recommendation are compression clothing therapy, manual therapy and strengthening exercise, and prolotherapy. Other therapeutic interventions such as intra-tissue percutaneous electrolysis and pulse-dose radiofrequency seem promising but require further studies to confirm their efficacy.  相似文献

AimTo review the literature on auto-contouring methods of lung tumour volumes on four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT).BackgroundManual delineation of lung tumour on 4DCT has been the gold standard in clinical practice. However, it is resource intensive due to the high volume of data which results in longer contouring duration and uncertainties in defining target. Auto-contouring may present as an attractive alternative by decreasing manual inputs required, thus improving the contouring process. This review aims to assess the accuracy, variability and contouring duration of automatic contouring compared with manual contouring in lung cancer on 4DCT datasets.Materials and methodsA search and review of literature were conducted to identify studies regarding lung tumour contouring on 4DCT. Manual and auto-contours were assessed and compared based on accuracy, variability and contouring duration.ResultsThirteen studies were included in this review and their results were compared. Accuracy of auto-contours was found to be comparable to manual contours. Auto-contouring resulted in lesser inter-observer variation when compared to manual contouring, however there was no significant reduction in intra-observer variability. Additionally, contouring duration was reduced with auto-contouring although long computation time could present as a bottleneck.ConclusionAuto-contouring is reliable and efficient, producing accurate contours with better consistency compared to manual contours. However, manual inputs would still be required both before and after auto-propagation.  相似文献

Researchers have shown renewed interest in the study of manual lateralization in chimpanzees. Currently there is no consensus confirming the presence or absence of manual dominance at a species level, mainly for populations in the wild and in semicaptivity. We aimed to evaluate the manual laterality in a group of chimpanzees in an intermediate setting (semicaptivity) via 2 tasks: one simple and unimanual (simple reaching) and the other complex and bimanual (tube task). We replicated the same experiments from Hopkins in a new and different sample of chimpanzees. In simple reaching, the hand is used to gather food and the type of grip and the posture are evaluated. The tube task assesses the hand used to extract food from the tube and the method of extraction (digital or instrumental). Through the handedness index we observed that the subjects show clear and strong individual preferences for both tasks (100% lateralized subjects in the tube task; 86% in simple reaching), although we did not detect population preferences for any of the tasks. However, considering both tasks jointly (multiple evaluation), it was possible to detect, for the first time, skilled manual dominance at a group level in semicaptive chimpanzees in one multitask index and borderline significance in a second multitask index.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to merge the methods currently used to assess beat-by-beat changes in muscle sympathetic nerve activity with a signal-averaging approach and overcome the inherent subjectivity and time-consuming nature of manual analysis of baroreflex-mediated sympathetic responses in humans. This is a retrospective study using data obtained during two prior studies [J. R. Halliwill, J. A. Taylor, and D. L. Eckberg. J. Physiol. (Lond.) 495: 279-288, 1996; C. T. Minson, J. R. Halliwill, T. Young, and M. J. Joyner. FASEB J. 13: A1044, 1999]. Beat-by-beat arterial pressure (Finapres device) and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (microneurography) were recorded in seven healthy, nonsmoking, normotensive subjects (2 men, 5 women) between the ages of 23 and 32 yr during arterial pressure changes induced by bolus injections of nitroprusside and phenylephrine. The muscle sympathetic nerve activity-diastolic pressure relationship was analyzed by both the traditional manual detection method and a novel segregated signal-averaging method. The results show the two analysis approaches are highly correlated across subjects (r = 0.914, P < 0. 05) and are in close agreement [slope for manual detection -6.17 +/- 0.91 (SE) vs. slope for segregated signal averaging -5.98 +/- 0.83 total integrated activity. beat(-1). mmHg(-1); P = 0.60]. However, a considerable time savings is seen with the new method (min vs. h). Segregated signal averaging as developed here provides a valid alternative to "by-hand" analysis of beat-by-beat changes in muscle sympathetic nerve activity that occur during dynamic baroreflex-mediated changes in sympathetic outflow. This approach provides an objective, rapid method to analyze nerve recordings.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the cardiorespiratory capacity of Thai male and female blue-collar workers in different age and occupational categories. The maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) of 70 men and 56 women was assessed using a submaximal bicycle-ergometer test supplemented with ventilatory gas analyses. The age of the subjects varied from 16 to 55 years. They worked in construction, manual materials handling and metal jobs. For the male subjects the VO2 max ranged from 1.43 to 3.50 l/min and from 21.3 to 66.3 ml/min/kg. The corresponding values for the female subjects were 0.97-2.97 l/min and 16.2-42.4 ml/min/kg. According to the European fitness classifications the mean age related VO2max of the male and female subjects can be considered moderate or poor. When compared to the European data heart rate of the subjects was 25-30% higher at submaximal levels of oxygen uptake, confirming earlier results. The low cardiorespiratory capacity of many Thai workers may be a limiting or even risk factor in physically demanding jobs.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to develop a portable device for quantifying the velocity-dependent properties of spastic elbow muscles. Based on a motor-driven system, validation tests of the portable system such as accuracy and response of sensors were first examined. Furthermore, simulated modules (inertia, damper and spring) as well as elbow joints (15 control and 15 hemiplegic subjects) were manually stretched under four different frequencies (1/3, 1/2, 1 and 3/2 Hz) through 60 degrees range of motion. Joint resistance and displacement during sinusoidal stretch were collected for further analysis. Two quantitative parameters (i.e., viscous components under each frequency and averaged viscosity across four frequencies) were derived to estimate the velocity-dependent properties of elbow joint. Tests of simulated modules confirm the manual stretch protocol and data analysis are valid in estimating the velocity-dependent component during a sinusoidal stretch. Compared to normal control, viscous component in each stretch frequency and averaged viscosity were significantly higher in subjects with spasticity (P < 0.001). The viscous component and averaged viscosity were found highly correlated with the modified Ashworth scale. These findings suggest that measurements of viscous component and averaged viscosity during manual sinusoidal stretching using the portable device could be clinically useful in evaluating spasticity.  相似文献
