Polyploid cells are a characteristic feature of certain human tissues, and notably many cancers. In a systematic genomic screen in yeast, Storchová and co-workers identified the genetic requirements of tetraploidy. Surprisingly, they showed that only three connected pathways are essential for the viability of tetraploid yeast cells. These data provide exciting new targets that might be essential specifically in polyploid cancer cells.  相似文献

We developed a spatially explicit model of a bioinvasion and used an approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) framework to make various inferences from a combination of genetic (microsatellite genotypes), historical (first observation dates) and geographical (spatial coordinates of introduction and sampled sites) information. Our method aims to discriminate between alternative introduction scenarios and to estimate posterior densities of demographically relevant parameters of the invasive process. The performance of our landscape-ABC method is assessed using simulated data sets differing in their information content (genetic and/or historical data). We apply our methodology to the recent introduction and spatial expansion of the cane toad, Bufo marinus, in northern Australia. We find that, at least in the context of cane toad invasion, historical data are more informative than genetic data for discriminating between introduction scenarios. However, the combination of historical and genetic data provides the most accurate estimates of demographic parameters. For the cane toad, we find some evidence for a strong bottleneck prior to introduction, a small initial number of founder individuals (about 15), a large population growth rate (about 400% per generation), a standard deviation of dispersal distance of 19 km per generation and a high invasion speed at equilibrium (50 km per year). Our approach strengthens the application of the ABC method to the field of bioinvasion by allowing statistical inferences to be made on the introduction and the spatial expansion dynamics of invasive species using a combination of various relevant sources of information.  相似文献

The Caryophyllales have the highest diversity in androecial patterns among flowering plants with stamen numbers ranging from 1 up to 4,000. Thanks to the recent progress in reconstructing the phylogeny of core Caryophyllales, questions of floral evolution, such as the origin and diversification of the androecium, can be readdressed. Caryophyllales are unique among core eudicots in sharing an androecial ring meristem or platform with centrifugal development of stamens and petals. Stamens are basically arranged in two whorls and evolution within the clade depends on the shift of either the antesepalous or the alternisepalous whorls to an upper position on the ring meristem and the reduction of the other. Four main developmental phenomena are responsible for the high diversity in androecial patterns: (1) the sterilisation of the outermost stamens through a division of common primordia; (2) the secondary addition of stamens by a centrifugal initiation of supernumerary stamens superimposed on a lower stamen number; (3) the pairwise displacement of alternisepalous stamens to the middle of the outer sepals and their potential fusion, or as part of a pluristaminate androecium; (4) the inversed sequence, reduction and loss of antesepalous stamens. Shifts in stamen numbers depend on pressures of the calyx and carpels and changes in the number of the latter. These patterns are expressed differently in the three main evolutionary lines of core Caryophyllales and are systematically relevant: (1) A basal grade of Caryophyllales, culminating with Caryophyllaceae, Amaranthaceae, Stegnosperma and Limeum, has the antesepalous stamens initiated in upper position on the ring meristem, and alternisepalous stamens are preferentially reduced. Among the antesepalous whorl there is a progressive loss of stamens following a sequence inversed to sepal initiation. Petaloid staminodes are formed by the radial division of outer stamens. (2) The raphide-clade and Molluginaceae are characterized by alternisepalous stamens in upper position on the ring meristem, with a trend to secondary stamen multiplication, and loss of antesepalous stamens. (3) The Portulacineae share the pattern of the raphide clade, but some taxa show shifts to an upper position on the ring meristem of either antesepalous or alternisepalous stamens, linked with secondary multiplications and reduction of either whorl. Different floral characters are plotted on a recent cladogram of Caryophyllales. The data show a consistent correlation between shifting carpel and stamen numbers independent of perianth evolution. Comparative data suggest that the basic androecium of Caryophyllales consists of two whorls of five stamens, linked with an absence of petals, and the evolution of the androecium is a combination of reductions and secondary multiplications of stamens with a highly predictive systematic value.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity--the capacity of a single genotype to produce different phenotypes in response to varying environmental conditions--is widespread. Yet, whether, and how, plasticity impacts evolutionary diversification is unclear. According to a widely discussed hypothesis, plasticity promotes rapid evolution because genes expressed differentially across different environments (i.e., genes with "biased" expression) experience relaxed genetic constraint and thereby accumulate variation faster than do genes with unbiased expression. Indeed, empirical studies confirm that biased genes evolve faster than unbiased genes in the same genome. An alternative hypothesis holds, however, that the relaxed constraint and faster evolutionary rates of biased genes may be a precondition for, rather than a consequence of, plasticity's evolution. Here, we evaluated these alternative hypotheses by characterizing evolutionary rates of biased and unbiased genes in two species of frogs that exhibit a striking form of phenotypic plasticity. We also characterized orthologs of these genes in four species of frogs that had diverged from the two plastic species before the plasticity evolved. We found that the faster evolutionary rates of biased genes predated the evolution of the plasticity. Furthermore, biased genes showed greater expression variance than did unbiased genes, suggesting that they may be more dispensable. Phenotypic plasticity may therefore evolve when dispensable genes are co-opted for novel function in environmentally induced phenotypes. Thus, relaxed genetic constraint may be a cause--not a consequence--of the evolution of phenotypic plasticity, and thereby contribute to the evolution of novel traits.  相似文献

Despite a century of study, the relationship between Ag-specific Ig concentration and protection remains poorly understood for the majority of pathogens. In certain conditions, administration of high Ab doses before challenge with an infectious agent can be less effective than smaller Ab doses, a phenomenon which is consistent with a prozone-like effect. In this study, the relationship between IgG1, IgG2a, IgG2b, and IgG3 dose, infective inocula, and protection was investigated in a mouse model of Cryptococcus neoformans infection. The activity of each IgG subclass ranged from protective to disease-enhancing depending on both the Ab dose and infective inocula used. Enhanced dissemination to the brain was observed in mice given a high IgG2a dose and a relatively low inoculum. Ab administration had immunomodulatory effects, with cytokine expression in lung, brain, and spleen varying as a function of the infective inoculum Ab dose and IgG subclass. In vitro studies did not predict or explain the mechanism of in vivo prozone-like effects, because all isotypes were opsonic and elicited NO release from macrophages. IgG2a was most efficient in inducing a macrophage oxidative burst. These results reveal that an individual Ab can be protective, nonprotective, or disease-enhancing depending on its concentration relative to a challenge inoculum. Our findings have implications for the potential contribution of Ab responses to defense against microbial diseases because Ab-mediated immunity may be protective, nonprotective, or even deleterious to the host.  相似文献

Summary Development involves a series of developmental events, separated by transformations, that follow a particular order or developmental sequence. The sequence may in turn be arbitrarily subdivided into contiguous segments (developmental stages). We discuss the properties of developmental sequences. We also examine the differing analytical approaches that have been used to analyse developmental sequences in an evolutionary context. Ernst Haeckel was a pioneer in this field. His approach was evolutionary and he introduced the idea of sequence heterochrony (evolutionary changes in the sequence of developmental events). Despite the availability of detailed developmental data (e.g. Franz Keibel’s ‘Normal Tables’), Haeckel was unable to undertake a quantitative analysis of developmental data. This is now possible through computer-based analytical techniques such as event-pairing, which can extract important biological information from developmental sequences by mapping them onto established phylogenies. It may also yield data that can be used in phylogeny reconstruction, although the inherent ‘non-independence’ of the data may make this invalid. In future, the methods discussed here may be applied to the analysis of patterns of gene expression in embryos, or adapted to studying gene order on chromosomes.  相似文献

Phosphorus is a crucial component of major organic molecules such as nucleic acids, ATP and membrane phospholipids. It is present in soils in the form of inorganic phosphate (Pi), which has low availability and poor mobility. To cope with Pi limitations, plants have evolved complex adaptive responses that include morphological and physiological modifications. This review describes how the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana adapts its root system architecture to phosphate deficiency through inhibition of primary root growth, increase in lateral root formation and growth and production of root hairs, which all promote topsoil foraging. A better understanding of plant adaptation to low phosphate will open the way to increased phosphorus use efficiency by crops. Such an improvement is needed in order to adjust how we manage limited phosphorus stocks and to reduce the disastrous environmental effects of phosphate fertilizers overuse.  相似文献

Diverse biochemical and physiological adaptations enable different species of ectotherms to survive and reproduce in very different temperature regimes, but whether these adaptations fully compensate for the thermodynamically depressing effects of low temperature on rates of biological processes is debated. If such adaptations are fully compensatory, then temperature-dependent processes (e.g., digestion rate, population growth rate) of cold-adapted species will match those of warm-adapted species when each is measured at its own optimal temperature. Here we show that cold-adapted insect species have much lower maximum rates of population growth than do warm-adapted species, even when we control for phylogenetic relatedness. This pattern also holds when we use a structural-equation model to analyze alternative hypotheses that might otherwise explain this correlation. Thus, although physiological adaptations enable some insects to survive and reproduce at low temperatures, these adaptations do not overcome the "tyranny" of thermodynamics, at least for rates of population increase. Indeed, the sensitivity of population growth rates of insects to temperature is even greater than predicted by a recent thermodynamic model. Our findings suggest that adaptation to temperature inevitably alters the population dynamics of insects. This result has broad evolutionary and ecological consequences.  相似文献

The normal form of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a self-fertilizing hermaphrodite, which produces from the same germ-line tissue first a limited number of sperm and then a larger number of oocytes. Self-progeny brood sizes are determined by the number of sperm, and most of the oocytes remain unfertilized. Therefore it might seem selectively advantageous to increase the number of sperm, and hence the size of the brood. A mutation that leads to a 50% increase in sperm production allows a comparison of population growth rates between the wild type (mean brood 327 progeny) and the mutant (mean brood 499 progeny). Wild-type populations grow faster, as measured by food consumption, indicating that increased brood size is not advantageous. The mutant appears to be at a disadvantage because the additional spermatogenesis leads to a delay in the onset of oogenesis, and hence to an increase in the minimum generation time. In support of the notion of an optimal brood size, it was found that different natural isolates of this species have self-fertilities similar to that of the standard laboratory strain, in the range 250-350 progeny per worm.  相似文献

Many different crop species were selected for a common suite of ‘domestication traits’, which facilitates their use for studies of parallel evolution. Within domesticated rice (Oryza sativa), there has also been independent evolution of weedy strains from different cultivated varieties. This makes it possible to examine the genetic basis of parallel weed evolution and the extent to which this process occurs through shared genetic mechanisms. We performed comparative QTL mapping of weediness traits using two recombinant inbred line populations derived from crosses between an indica crop variety and representatives of each of the two independently evolved weed strains found in US rice fields, strawhull (S) and blackhull awned (B). Genotyping‐by‐sequencing provided dense marker coverage for linkage map construction (average marker interval <0.25 cM), with 6016 and 13 730 SNPs mapped in F5 lines of the S and B populations, respectively. For some weediness traits (awn length, hull pigmentation and pericarp pigmentation), QTL mapping and sequencing of underlying candidate genes confirmed that trait variation was largely attributable to individual loci. However, for more complex quantitative traits (including heading date, panicle length and seed shattering), we found multiple QTL, with little evidence of shared genetic bases between the S and B populations or across previous studies of weedy rice. Candidate gene sequencing revealed causal genetic bases for 8 of 27 total mapped QTL. Together these findings suggest that despite the genetic bottleneck that occurred during rice domestication, there is ample genetic variation in this crop to allow agricultural weed evolution through multiple genetic mechanisms.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The body tissues of insect herbivores contain higher concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus than do their host plants, leading to an elemental mismatch that can limit herbivore growth, fecundity and ultimately influence population dynamics. While low nutrient availability can limit herbivore growth and reproduction, nutrient levels that exceed an organism’s nutritional requirements, i.e. an organisms’ threshold elemental ratio, can also decrease performance. 2. We conducted a laboratory experiment to examine the impacts of nitrogen and phosphorus additions on population growth rates of a phloem‐feeding insect herbivore. 3. Herbivore per capita population growth rates were highest at intermediate foliar nitrogen concentrations, indicating a performance cost on the highest nitrogen foliage. While there was no direct effect of foliar phosphorus concentration on insect performance, there was a strong and unexpected indirect effect. High soil phosphorus availability increased both foliar nitrogen concentrations and aphid tissue nitrogen, resulting in low population growth rates when both soil nitrogen and phosphorus availabilities were high. 4. In this study, experimental increases in foliar nitrogen levels led to a decrease in herbivore performance suggesting that excessive nutrient levels can limit herbivore population growth rates.  相似文献

1. As future climate change is expected to have a major impact on freshwater lake ecosystems, it is important to assess the extent to which changes taking place in freshwater lakes can be attributed to the degree of climate change that has already taken place. 2. To address this issue, it is necessary to examine evidence spanning many decades by combining long‐term observational data sets and palaeolimnological records. 3. Here, we introduce a series of case studies of seven European lakes for which both long‐term data sets and sediment records are available. Most of the sites have been affected by eutrophication and are now in recovery. 4. The studies attempt to disentangle the effects of climate change from those of nutrient pollution and conclude that nutrient pollution is still the dominant factor controlling the trophic state of lakes. 5. At most sites, however, there is also evidence of climate influence related in some cases to natural variability in the climate system, and in others to the trend to higher temperatures over recent decades attributed to anthropogenic warming. 6. More generally and despite some problems, the studies indicate the value of combining limnological and palaeolimnological records in reconstructing lake history and in disentangling the changing role of different pressures on lake ecosystems.  相似文献

Concession-based reproductive skew models predict that social groups can form via persuasion, whereby dominant individuals forfeit some reproduction to subordinates as an incentive to stay and help. We have developed an alternative skew model based on manipulation, whereby dominant individuals coerce subordinates into staying and helping by imposing costs on their independent reproductive prospects. Stable groups can evolve under a much wider range of genetic and ecological conditions under this manipulation model than under concession models. We describe evidence that various forms of pre-emptive and ongoing manipulation occur in nature and we discuss the implications of the model for the development of a general theory of social evolution.  相似文献

Heterochrony revisited: the evolution of developmental sequences   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6
The concept of heterochrony is a persistent component of discussions about the way that evolution and development interact. Since the late 1970s heterochrony has been defined largely as developmental changes in the relationship of size and shape. This approach to heterochrony, here termed growth heterochrony, is limited in the way it can analyse change in the relative timing of developmental events in a number of respects. In particular, analytical techniques do not readily allow the study of changes in developmental events not characterized by size and shape parameters, or of many kinds of events in many taxa. I discuss here an alternative approach to heterochrony, termed sequence heterochrony, in which a developmental trajectory is conceptualized as a series of discrete events. Heterochrony is demonstrated when the sequence position of an event changes relative to other events in that sequence. I summarize several analytical techniques that allow the investigation of sequence heterochrony in phylogenetic contexts and also quantitatively. Finally, several examples of how this approach may be used to test hypotheses on the way development evolves are summarized.  相似文献
