Chassalia magnificens, a new species from the Albertine Rift in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, is described and illustrated. The species is recognised inter alia by its large stipules and montane habitat. Chassalia chrysoclada is a new combination for a widespread, but hitherto overlooked, central African species originally described in the genus Psychotria. Chassalia chrysoclada is related to C. pteropetala (K. Schum.) Cheek but lacks the bicostate twigs and dorsally winged corolla lobes of that species.  相似文献

In the classification of J. D. Hooker (1873) and of K. Schumann (1891), the genus Prismatomeris Thw. is included in the tribe Morindeae of Rubiaceae. In the modern classifications, e. g. Bremekamp (1966), however, the taxonomic position of the genus is still uncertain. The genus agrees with the tribe Morindeae in the downward radicle, valvate aestivation of the corolla lobes and presence of raphides, but it differs significantly from the latter in the free flowers, bilocular ovary and the peltate ovule attached to the upper half of septum. Therefore, it would be more suitable that the genus is separated from the tribe Morindeae Miq., and is raised to the rank of tribe, placed in the subfamily Rubioideae based on Bremekamp’s delimitation. In the present paper ten character pairs of the genus and the notes on their taxonomic value are presented and two following species are recognized: 1. P. tetrandra (Roxb.) K. Schum. is found in northern India. Its subspecies, which is distributed in Yunnan of China and in Thailand, was previously called P. tetrandra (Roxb.) K. Schumann, and is now revised as P. tetrandra (Roxb.) K. Schum. subsp. multiflora (Ridley) Y. Z. Ruan. 2. P. connata Y.Z. Ruan is described as a new species, that has been treated as P. tetrandra (Roxb.) K. Schum. by previous auth rs. It is native to the subtropic region of South China. Its tropical new subspecies, P. connata. Y. Z. Ruan subsp. hainanensis Y. Z. Ruan, is found on Hainan Island.  相似文献

Diversity and distribution of trees [≥5 cm diameter at breast height (dbh)], shrubs and herbs was assessed in thirty 0.05‐ha (10 × 50 m) plots of a tropical high forest in the Ssese islands of Lake Victoria, central Uganda. The aim was to determine the floristic richness and composition of the forests. We recorded 179 species belonging to 70 families and 146 genera. Of these, nine families had five species or more. Rubiaceae was the richest with fourteen species followed by Euphorbiaceae (thirteen), Apocynaceae (ten) and Moraceae (nine). The majority of the families (35) were represented by one species each. Fifty‐eight herbaceous species, 39 lianas, ten shrubs and 72 species of trees were recorded. The commonest species recorded in the forest included: Uapaca guineensis Mull. Arg., Tabernaemontana pachysiphon Stapf., and Aframomum luteoalbum (K Schum.) K. Schum. Among the rare species encountered were Ficus densistipulata De Willd., Englerophytum oblanceolatum (S. Moore) Pennington, and Afromomum zambeziacum (Bak.) K. Schum. The present study has shown that the Ssese islands are floristically rich in species and compare well with other mainland forests. Species richness, rarity and uniqueness of habitats can be considered as approaches in the prioritization of conservation sites within the fragmented forests of Ssese islands.  相似文献

The delimitation of the neotropical genera of the Marantaceae has been revised, using evidence mainly from the morphology of inflorescences and flowers. It is concluded that the generic concepts of Schumann in "Das Pflanzenreich", often questioned by 20th century American authors, are essentially sound, but that his grouping of the genera into two tribes is quite artificial. Main deviations from the treatment of Schumann are the rearrangement of the genera, somewhat different stress on diagnostic characters and a much narrower concept of the genus Myrosma. A new genus, Koernickanthe is proposed for the long known species Maranta orbiculata (Koern.) Schum. The genera are arranged into informal groups and the groups and genera recognized are: Maranta group (Maranta L., Monophyllanthe Schum.), Myrosma group (Myrosma L. f., Saranthe (Regel et Koern.) Eichl., Hylaeanthe Jonker et Jonker, Ctenanthe Eichl., Stromanthe Sond.), Calathea group (Calathea G. F. W. Meyer, lschnosiphon Koern., Pleiostachya Schum.), Monotagma group (Monotagma Schum., Koernickanthe gen. nov.) and Thalia "group" (Thalia L.). It is suggested, that each group has its closest affinities with Old World genera and that this indicates that the diversification of the marantaceous stock was far–reaching already before the Old and the New World became effectively isolated. It is further suggested that the early diversification of the family took place in Africa, the flora of which, although poor in species, is morphologically very diverse. Two new combinations are made, viz. Stromanthe stromanthoides (Macbr.) Anderss. and Koernickanthe orbiculata (Koern.) Anderss.  相似文献

The genera Corynanthe and Pausinystalia are an easily recognizable group within the tribe Coptosapelteae because the corolla lobes are provided with a distinct spherical, club-shaped or linear appendage. In the past the delimitation of the species and the 1–3 genera in the literature has been problematical. A short revision of the group is undertaken, based mainly on a study of Central African herbarium specimens. The morphological features of the group are reviewed and documented. Stipules were commonly found to have interlocking vernation; this type of ptyxis has not yet been reported from the Rubiaceae. Characters and their states are coded for a numerical phenetic and cladistic analysis of the relationships among the species. Our formal analyses corroborate the view that two genera can be recognized, Corynanthe (characterized by exserted style and anthers, undivided stigma and mainly loculicidal capsule; three species) and Pausinystalia (characterized by style and anthers included in the corolla tube, a bilobed stigma and predominantly septicidal capsule; five species). The entire group probably evolved from a Corynanthe-like ancestor; a drastic shift in flower biology, viz. the loss of secondary pollen presentation, probably correlated with adaptations to another pollinator which may have caused the divergence between the two genera. These show the characteristic distribution pattern of strict rain forest groups in Africa, except that they are missing from the lowland forests of the Zaire Basin. The species are concentrated around the known forest refugia of the quaternary glaciation: only C. pachyceras is distributed in almost the whole rain forest area. A formal taxonomic treatment (with key to species) of the two genera is given; a key to the genera of the Coptosapelteae of the African continent is also included. The examination of the isotypes of forgotten names described by the Berlin school revealed three new synonyms. Pausinystalia angolensis described from Cabinda (Angola) by Wernham is proved to be synonymous with P. macroceras. A few other taxonomic changes are made. Pausinystalia ituriense De Wild, is reduced to a subspecies of P. lane-poolei (Hutch.) Hutch, ex Lane-Poole; P. brachylhyrsum (K. Schum.) W. Brandt is recognized again (instead of being reduced to a form of P. macroceras (K Schum.) Pierre ex Beille), P. talbotii Wernham is maintained in Pausinystalia, and not transferred to Coiynanthe, as recently suggested.  相似文献

Oncostemma cuspidatum K. Schum., described from the West African island of S˜o Tomé, is recognized as being synonymous with Tylophora oblonga N.E. Br., a widespread and variable species of mainland African rainforests. The monotypic genus Oncostemma K. Schum. is reduced to synonymy with Tylophora R. Br. (Asclepiadaceae-Asclepiadeae-Astephaninae).  相似文献

Summary

The genus Trichospermum Blume as accepted here includes not only the groups formerly separated as Belotia and Halconia, but also Althoffia K. Schum. It is predominantly a Malesian genus, distributed from the Malay Peninsula to the Solomon Islands, the Santa Cruz Islands, Fiji and Samoa, the number of species being greatest in New Guinea and adjacent islands; there are at least three species in tropical America. The thick fibrous bark is much used for making rope and cord. The Old World species of Trichospermum, sensu lato, number thirty-six, of which sixteen (T. arachnoideum, buruensis, fauroensis, fletcheri, fosbergii, gracile, graciliflorum, grewioides, helotrichum, incaniopsis, ovatum, rhamnifolius, smithii, stellato-pilosum, subdehiscens and talaudensis) are described here for the first time; Althoffia ledermannii is renamed T. burretii; the species T. kajewskii is reduced to synonymy of T. psilocladum. Two new combinations are proposed: T. pleiostigma (F.v.M.) and T. tripyxis (K. Schum.).

Burret's sub-division of Trichospermum is neither accepted nor replaced as the species show a reticulate relationship. The key and the main specific differences are based on the trichomes of the lower surface of the leaf.  相似文献

Cyclotides are a new class of plant biologics that display a diverse range of bioactivities with therapeutic potentials. They possess an unusual end-to-end cyclic backbone combined with a cystine knot arrangement, making them exceptionally stable to heat, chemical and enzymatic degradation. Currently, >200 cyclotides have been discovered but only three naturally occurring linear variants (also known as uncyclotides) have been isolated. In this study, we report the discovery of 18 novel peptides, chassatides C1 to C18, composed of 14 new cyclotides and four uncyclotides from Chassalia chartacea (Rubiaceae family). Thus far, this is the largest number of uncyclotides being reported in a single species. Activity testing showed that the uncyclotides not only retain the effectiveness but also are the most potent chassatides in the assays for antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and hemolytic activities. Genetic characterization of novel chassatides revealed that they have the shortest precursors of all known cyclotides hitherto isolated, which represents a new class of cyclotide precursors. This is the first report of cyclotide genes in a second genus, the Chassalia, other than the Hedyotis (Oldenlandia) of the Rubiaceae family. In addition, we also report the characterization of two Met-oxidized derivatives of chassatides C2 and C11. The oxidation of Met residue causes loss of bioactivities, strengthening the importance of the hydrophobic patch for membrane interaction.  相似文献

In this study, extracts from 50 Taiwanese folk medicinal plants were examined and screened for anti-Helicobacter pylori activity. Ninety-five percent ethanol was used for herbal extraction. Paederia scandens (Lour.) Merr. (PSM), Plumbago zeylanica L. (PZL), Anisomeles indica (L.) O. Kuntze (AIOK), Bombax malabaricum DC. (BMDC) and Alpinia speciosa (J. C. Wendl.) K. Schum. (ASKS) and Bombax malabaricum DC. (BMDC) all demonstrated strong anti-H. pylori activities. The minimum inhibitory concentration values of the anti-H. pylori activity given by the five ethanol herb extracts ranged from 0.64 to 10.24 mg ml(-1). Twenty-six herbs, including Artemisia argvi Levl. et Vant (AALEV), Phyla nodiflora (Linn.) Greene (PNG) and others, showed moderate anti-H. pylori activity. The additional 19 herbs, including Areca catechu Linn. (ACL), Euphorbia hirta Linn. (EHL) and Gnaphalium adnatum Wall. ex DC. (GAWEDC), possessed lower anti-H. pylori effects. About half of the Taiwanese folk medicinal plants tested, demonstrated to possess higher anti-H. pylori activity.  相似文献

The contribution of Jonathan Pereira to plant taxonomy is reviewed. He described three species in the course of his extensive publications on materia medica. All three are members of the Zingiberaceae. Elettaria cardamomum-zeylanicum J. Pereira from Sri Lanka has been completely overlooked since its publication. It is a synonym of Elettaria cardamomum var. major Baker. The West African Amomum citratum J. Pereira is correctly known as Aframomum citratum (J. Pereira) K. Schum. Amomum korarima J. Pereira is a synonym of Aframomum corrorima (A. Braun) P. C. M. Jansen, an important spice-plant from Ethiopia. The typification of these taxa and their synonyms is reviewed. This includes new lectotypifications for two species described by Gaertner, Zingiber ensal and Z. minus. A note concerning the valid publication of 14 nomenclatural novelties by B. A. Abeywickrama is included.  相似文献

Kyllinga nervosa (Steud.) and Sporobolus kentrophyllus (K. Schum.) are co-dominant plants of the Serengeti short-grass plains, Tanzania. The plains are characterized by seasonal and sporadic rainfall and currently support in excess of 1.5 million migratory ungulates. The interactive effect of simulated bovine urine and water availability were tested on the competitive interactions of these species in the laboratory. Sporobolus kentrophyllus was a superior competitor to K. nervosa over the tested treatment levels with respect to growth and reproductive effort. Sporobolus kentrophyllus exhibited rapid growth in response to urine addition, leading to a significant species × urine interaction while reduced growth by K. nervosa in response to low water availability explained the significant species × water interaction and is likely explained by K. nervosa's shallow root system. Kyllinga nervosa, however, appears to be more tolerant of low nitrogen conditions based on its similar growth with and without the urine treatment. The effect of intraspecific competition on total biomass was similar for S. kentrophyllus and K. nervosa. Competition resulted in increased size differences (asymmetry) for K. nervosa and for the interspecific competition treatments compared to the size differences observed for plants grown individually (in absence of competition).Total reproductive biomass was reduced most by competition with S. kentrophyllus, irrespective of target species. The water treatment did not influence reproduction while the urine treatment significantly increased reproductive biomass and interacted with target species, competitor species, and yielded a three-way urine × target × competitor species interaction. Results suggest that codominance of these two species in the Serengeti is regulated by water availability, nitrogen input from grazers, and local neighbor identity.  相似文献
