The earliest known ovules in the Late Devonian (Famennian) are borne terminally on fertile branches and are typically enclosed in a cupule. Among these ovules are some that have terete integumentary lobes with little or no fusion. Here, we report a new taxon, Latisemenia longshania, from the Famennian of South China, which bears cupulate ovules that are terminal as well as opposite on the fertile axis. Each ovule has four broad integumentary lobes, which are extensively fused to each other and also to the nucellus. The cupule is uniovulate, and the five flattened cupule segments of each terminal ovule are elongate cuneate and shorter than the ovule. Associated but not attached pinnules are laminate and Sphenopteris-like, with an entire or lobate margin. Latisemenia is the earliest known plant with ovules borne on the side of the fertile axis and may foreshadow the diverse ovule arrangements found among younger seed plant lineages that emerge in the Carboniferous. Following the telome theory, Latisemenia demonstrates derived features in both ovules and cupules, and the shape and fusion of integumentary lobes suggest effective pollination and protection to the nucellus. Along with other recent discoveries from China, Latisemenia extends the palaeogeographic range of the earliest seed plants.  相似文献

Sublepidodendron wusihense (Sze) Sze and Lepidostrobus grabaui Sze were based on compressions from the upper part of the Wutung Formation (Famennian) of Jiangsu, South China. After studying the morphology and anatomy of abundant well-preserved specimens from two localities, Sublepidodendron wusihense and Lepidostrobus grabaui are reconsidered and viewed as Sublepidodendron grabaui (Sze) comb. nov. This plant is an arborescent, heterosporous lycopsid known from trunk, branches and cones. Leaf bases are spirally arranged, fusiform in outline, with a vascular bundle scar and keel. One specimen is known with a cone attached at the tip of a distal branch. The trunk has an intrastelar parenchyma concentration (pith), exarch primary xylem and secondary xylem. The branch anatomy varies from exarch primary xylem with a small, centrally located pith, to a solid exarch primary xylem strand. Based on the morphology and anatomy of both vegetative and reproductive organs, Sublepidodendron grabaui is placed into Sublepidodendraceae ( sensu Kräusel & Weyland, 1949), and Isoëtales ( sensu DiMichele & Bateman, 1996).  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 149 , 299–311.  相似文献

Compressions and impressions of an isoetalean lycopsid, comprising lower portions of stems, lobed bases, attached rootlets, and rounded rootlet scars, discovered in Late Devonian (Famennian) rocks of Clinton County, north-central Pennsylvania, Appalachian Basin, USA, are here described as Otzinachsonia beerboweri, gen. et sp. nov. These specimens demonstrate unequivocally the existence of the isoetalean lobe-and-furrow rhizomorphic growth pattern as early as the Late Devonian. They were found in an Archaeopteris- and Rhacophyton-dominated flora at Red Hill, an outcrop of the Duncannon Member of the Catskill Formation. The fossils were found in a dark-gray to greenish-gray lenticular siltstone layer that has an average thickness of 1.0 m. This deposit is interpreted as a floodplain pond. The low-energy nature of the deposit and the fine preservation of the intact rootlets of the specimens imply little or no transport. The plants were probably growing along the edge of the floodplain pond with their lower portions submerged for at least part of the year.  相似文献

The new genus Barbatosphaeria is described for a perithecial ascomycete known as Calosphaeria barbirostris occurring on decayed wood of deciduous trees under the periderm. The fungus produces nonstromatic perithecia with hyaline, 1-septate ascospores formed in unitunicate, nonamyloid asci. Anamorphs produced in vitro belong to Sporothrix and Ramichloridium with holoblastic-denticulate conidiogenesis; conidiophores of the two types were formed in succession during the development of the colony. Phylogenetic analyses of nuLSU rDNA sequences indicate that this fungus is distinct from morphologically similar Lentomitella, tentatively placed in the Trichosphaeriales. It groups with freshwater Aquaticola and Cataractispora and terrestrial Cryptadelphia in maximum parsimony analysis; the same grouping but without Cryptadelphia was inferred from Bayesian analysis. Cultivation, morphology and phylogenetic studies of the nuLSU rDNA support the erection of a new genus for C. barbirostris.  相似文献

The multiovulate cupule of a new spermatophyte, Thorezia vezerensisgen. et sp. nov., is described from the Late Devonian aged sediments from Trooz Quarry in Belgium. In gross morphology, it conforms to the Moresnetia morphotype and has a cupule that is composed of four independent quarters that each dichotomises three times. Each cupule quarter contains one single ovoid preovule with a long pedicel and an integument that has small apical teeth surrounding a rudimentary micropyle. Morphological variability in the materials examined is interpreted as being related to preovule maturity, and from this a good understanding of the ontogenetic development from preceding dispersal has been developed. Up to now, 17 spermatophyte species have been described, 11 of which come from eastern Laurussia. This diversity in eastern Laurussia contrasts strongly with the low diversity characterizing contemporaneous floras from other phytogeographical areas. We suggest here that the arid climatic conditions prevailing in eastern Laurussia favoured the development of diverse spermatophyte communities and contributed to reduced diversity and abundance of contemporaneous free-sporing plant diversity.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences reveals that Alysiella filiformis belongs to the family Neisseriaceae. The genus Simonsiella is phylogenetically separated by the genera Kingella and Neisseria. The species Simonsiella crassa and A. filiformis show a close phylogenetic relationship, with the 16S rDNA sequence similarity and the DNA-DNA hybridization representing 98.7% and 35%, respectively. Therefore, S. crassa should be transferred from the genus Simonsiella to the genus Alysiella as Alysiella crassa comb. nov. Simonsiella steedae and Simonsiella sp. of cat origin show strong genetic affinities and are distantly related with the type species of Simonsiella, S. mulleri. Thus, a new genus, Conchiformibium is proposed; Conchiformibium steedae comb. nov. and Conchiformibium kuhniae sp. nov. are accommodated in this new genus. On the basis of the phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic distinction from the genus Neisseria, N. denitrificans should be reclassified, for which a new genus and new combination Bergeriella denitrificans are proposed.  相似文献

Clevelandodendron ohioensis Chitaley & Pigg gen. et sp. nov. is an almost entire lycopsid plant known from a single compressed specimen from the Cleveland Shale member of the Upper Devonian Ohio Shale. This unique specimen is 125 cm long, consisting of an unbranched, slender, monopodial axis with a partially preserved plant base bearing thick appendages at one end, and a compact, terminal ovoid bisporangiate strobilus at the other. The stem is 2 cm wide for most of its length. Visible on the decorticated stem surface are helically arranged, elongate leaf traces and laterally compressed, slender leaves along the stem margin. The plant base bears 4-6 thick appendages. The terminal strobilus is compact, ovoid, 9 cm long and up to 6 cm wide, morphologically similar to those of some Lepidodendrales, and bears helically arranged sporophyll/sporangium complexes with narrow bases and distal laminae up to 18 mm long, turned upward. Megaspores are 320-360 μm, trilete and laevigate, lacking a gula; microspores are 30-42 μm, trilete, indistinctly punctate and possibly assignable to Calamospora or Punctatisporites. Clevelandodendron demonstrates that slender unbranched lycopsids with an isoetalean plant habit similar to the Carboniferous genera Chaloneria and Sporangiostrobus and Triassic Pleuromeia-like forms were present as early as the Late Devonian. The early occurrence of this unique habit suggests that diversification within the isoetalean clade sensu Rothwell and Erwin (including both Isoetales and Lepidodendrales) was well established prior to the Carboniferous.  相似文献

Two Gram-positive bacteria, designated strains Aji5-31(T) and Ngc37-23(T), were isolated from the intestinal tracts of fishes. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that both strains were related to the members of the family Dermatophilaceae, with 95.6-96.9% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities. The family Dermatophilaceae contains 2 genera and 3 species: Dermatophilus congolensis, Dermatophilus chelonae and Kineosphaera limosa. However, it has been suggested that the taxonomic position of D. chelonae should be reinvestigated using a polyphasic approach, because the chemotaxonomic characteristics are not known (Stackebrandt, 2006; Stackebrandt and Schumann, 2000). Our present study revealed that strains Aji5-31(T), Ngc37-23(T) and D. chelonae NBRC 105200(T) should be separated from the other members of the family Dermatophilaceae on the basis of the following characteristics: the predominant menaquinone of strain Aji5-31(T) is MK-8(H(2)), strain Ngc37-23(T) possesses iso- branched fatty acids as major components, and the menaquinone composition of D. chelonae is MK-8(H(4)), MK-8 and MK-8(H(2)) (5 : 3 : 2, respectively). On the basis of these distinctive phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic analysis results, it is proposed that strains Aji5-31(T) and Ngc37-23(T) be classified as two novel genera and species of the family Dermatophilaceae. The names are Mobilicoccus pelagius gen. nov., sp. nov. and Piscicoccus intestinalis gen. nov., sp. nov., and the type strains are Aji5-31(T) (=NBRC 104925(T) =DSM 22762(T)) and Ngc37-23(T) (=NBRC 104926(T) =DSM 22761(T)), respectively. In addition, D. chelonae should be reassigned to a new genus of the family Dermatophilaceae with the name Austwickia chelonae gen. nov., comb. nov.  相似文献

An unusual filamentous, budding bacterium was isolated from several North American hot springs and named Isosphaera pallida. Filaments are composed of spherical cells 2.5–3.0 m in diameter, with cell growth and division occurring by formation of intercalary buds. These obligately aerobic, heterotrophic isolates closely resemble Isocystis pallida Woronichin, which has been previously described as a cyanobacterium, and later as a yeast, based on collected specimens.Isolates were salmon-colored due to the presence of carotenoids and contained gas vesicles. Growth occurred at temperatures up to 55° C in defined media using 0.025% glucose or lactate as carbon sources. Glucose concentrations of 0.05% or higher inhibited growth of the culture.Ultrathin sections observed by TEM revealed an unusual tri-laminar wall structure. Pit-like ultrastructural features were found in the cell wall. Growth of cultures was not inhibited by penicillin G, and the Gram reaction gave variable results.Cells formed motile, macroscopic aggregates (comets) when harvested from liquid cultures and plated on media containing Gelrite (Kelco Co.) as a solidifying agent. Aggregation and motility were observed in both the light and the dark. However, comets were strongly phototactic. Negative stains revealed numerous pili, but not flagella. We propose that this highly unusual prokaryote be placed in a new genus.  相似文献

Upatoia barnardii gen. et sp. nov., a conifer pollen cone from the Late Cretaceous (Santonian) Eutaw Formation of Upatoi Creek, Georgia, USA, is known from lignified and fusainised mesofossils that preserve its three-dimensional structure. The cone consists of numerous helically arranged microsporophylls, each composed of a thin stalk and distal lamina. Three elongate pollen sacs are attached to the base of the lamina. Pollen grains isolated from the pollen sacs are relatively large (52 – 75 μm), spheroidal to ellipsoidal in outline, lack sacci, and have a thickened equatorial exine that is often strongly folded. Pollen of Upatoia barnardii indicates a close relationship to extant Araucariaceae. Microsporophylls of U. barnardii confirm suggestions from previous studies of fossil material that some Mesozoic Araucariaceae had only three pollen sacs per microsporophyll, in contrast to extant species that often have more than ten pollen sacs per microsporophyll.  相似文献

An Early Cretaceous angiosperm, Sinocarpus decussatus gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Yixian Formation in Liaoning, China, based on an infructescence fragment. It is probably ebracteate, consisting of one terminal fruit and two pairs of pedicellate lateral fruits arranged decussately. Carpels are probably borne on a small convex receptacle. There are no distinct remnants of a perianth although fragments observed at the base of immature fruits may represent perianth parts. No remnants of androecial parts have been observed, and it is unknown whether the flowers were unisexual or bisexual. The basally syncarpous ovary is superior and composed of 3 or 4 carpels. Each carpel contains about 10 anatropous ovules/seeds borne along the linear placentae. Seeds are flattened and embedded in a thick amorphous material. The character combination of Sinocarpus indicates a systematic position among the basal grade of eudicots or the basal core eudicots, and particularly shows similarities to extant Ranunculaceae, Buxaceae, and Myrothamnaceae, but based on the available data the fossil cannot unambiguously be placed in any modern family.  相似文献

Abstract Kunia venusta gen. et sp. nov. is reported from the late Middle Devonian (Givetian) Haikou Formation near Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China. This plant has three orders of naked axes that divide pseudomonopodially. The second‐ and third‐order axes occur in a helix. Fertile appendages are distantly spaced and helically inserted to the third‐order axis; they comprise equally dichotomous branches terminated by two clusters of paired and fusiform sporangia. Sterile appendages are dichotomous and distally recurved. A comparison is made with the basal euphyllophytes including the trimerophytes, cladoxylopsids, zygopterids, stauropterids, and some relevant genera of uncertain affinity. The new plant resembles them in dichotomous appendages with terminal elongated sporangia, but differs mainly in the three orders of pseudomonopodial axes bearing helical laterals. It is thus placed in the Euphyllophytina as incertae sedis. It is suggested that an evolutionary divergence in the branching pattern and appendage morphology might have occurred in the Middle Devonian euphyllophytes, that is, maintaining three dimensions versus yielding more or less planation.  相似文献

Hatena arenicola gen. et sp. nov., an enigmatic flagellate of the katablepharids, is described. It shows ultrastructural affinities to the katablepharids, including large and small ejectisomes, cell covering, and a feeding apparatus. Although molecular phylogenies of the 18S ribosomal DNA support its classification into the katablepharids, the cell is characterized by a dorsiventrally compressed cell shape and a crawling motion, both of which are unusual within this group. The most distinctive feature of Hatena arenicola is that it harbors a Nephroselmis symbiont. This symbiosis is distinct from previously reported cases of ongoing symbiosis in that the symbiont plastid is selectively enlarged, while other structures such as the mitochondria, Golgi body, cytoskeleton, and endomembrane system are degraded; the host and symbiont have developed a morphological association, i.e., the eyespot of the symbiont is always at the cell apex of Hatena arenicola; and only one daughter cell inherits the symbiont during cell division, resulting in a symbiont-bearing green cell and a symbiont-lacking colorless cell. Interestingly, the colorless cells have a feeding apparatus that corresponds to the location of the eyespot in symbiont-bearing cells, and they are able to feed on prey cells. This indicates that the morphology of the host depends on the presence or absence of the symbiont. These observations suggest that Hatena arenicola has a unique "half-plant, half-predator" life cycle; one cell divides into an autotrophic cell possessing a symbiotic Nephroselmis species, and a symbiont-lacking colorless cell, which later develops a feeding apparatus de novo. The evolutionary implications of Hatena arenicola as an intermediate step in plastid acquisition are discussed in the context of other examples of ongoing endosymbioses in dinoflagellates.  相似文献

A new basal land plant, Teruelia diezii gen. et sp. nov., is described from the shallow‐water marine deposits of the Lower Devonian (Lochkovian–Pragian) Nogueras Formation of the Iberian Peninsula (north Gondwana palaeocontinent). Teruelia is preserved as a compression fossil and consists of isotomously branched, robust stems terminated in large, fusiform, twisted sporangia. This morphology suggests that Teruelia is very probably equivalent to Aglaophyton, a permineralized early polysporangiophyte known up to now only from the Lower Devonian (early Pragian to ?earliest Emsian) Rhynie Chert in Scotland (Laurussia palaeocontinent), which represents an early terrestrial hot‐spring ecosystem. Accepted phylogenies identify Aglaophyton as sister to vascular plants. Our phylogeny‐based results identify the Aglaophyton/Teruelia biological entity (i.e. Aglaophyton anatomical characters plus Teruelia external morphology) as the most direct vascular plant precursor. It shows that at least one Rhynie Chert type plant had a much wider distribution than previously known and suggests that Aglaophyton was not restricted to hydrothermal environments, unlike other Rhynie Chert plants.  相似文献

The taxonomic status of Rhodococcus equi, originally isolated from foal specimens, has been the subject of discussion for a number of years. The chequered history of the taxon has prompted this polyphasic analysis of R. equi strains, close members of the genus Rhodococcus and representatives of other genera classified in the order Corynebacteriales, to establish the taxonomic position of this taxon. Thirty one R. equi strains, including the type strain, were examined for genotypic and numerical taxonomic properties. The resultant data are consistent with their classification in the order Corynebacteriales but the R. equi strains formed a distinct phyletic clade away from representatives of other members of the genus Rhodococcus in the 16S rRNA gene tree. Representatives of this clade shared their highest pairwise 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with the type strain of Rhodococcus kunmingensis (95.2–98.1 %). However, the R. equi taxon was readily distinguished from R. kunmingensis and from the other members of the order Corynebacteriales using a combination of genotypic, chemotypic and phenotypic properties. On the basis of these data the R. equi strains are considered to represent a new genus. The name proposed for this taxon is Prescottia gen. nov., with Prescottia equi comb. nov. as the type species containing the type strain, C 7T (= ATCC 25729T = ATCC 6939T = CCUG 892T = CIP 54.72T = DSM 20307T = HAMBI 2061T = NBRC 14956T = JCM 1311T = JCM 3209T = LMG 18452T = NBRC 101255T = NCTC 1621T = NRRL B-16538T = VKM Ac-953T).  相似文献

Two strains of sulfate-reducing bacteria (J.5.4.2-L4.2.8T and J.3.6.1-H7) were isolated from a pyrite-forming enrichment culture and were compared phylogenetically and physiologically to the closest related type strain Desulfovibrio sulfodismutans DSM 3696T. The isolated strains were vibrio-shaped, motile rods that stained Gram-negative. Growth occurred from 15 to 37 °C and within a pH range of 6.5–8.5. Both strains used sulfate, thiosulfate, sulfite, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as electron acceptor when grown with lactate. Lactate was incompletely oxidized to acetate. Formate and H2 were used as electron donor in the presence of acetate. Dismutation of thiosulfate and pyrosulfite was observed. The two new isolates differed from D. sulfodismutans by the utilization of DMSO as electron acceptor, 82% genome-wide average nucleotide identity (ANI) and 32% digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH), thus representing a novel species. The type strain of the type species Desulfovibrio desulfuricans Essex6T revealed merely 88% 16S rRNA gene identity and 49% genome-wide average amino acid identity (AAI) to the new isolates as well as to D. sulfodismutans. Furthermore, the dominance of menaquinone MK-7 over MK-6 and the dominance of ai-C15:0 fatty acids were observed not only in the two new isolated strains but also in D. sulfodismutans. Therefore, the definition of a new genus is indicated for which the name Desulfolutivibrio is proposed. We propose for strains J.5.4.2-L4.2.8T and J.3.6.1-H7 the name Desulfolutivibrio sulfoxidireducens gen. nov. sp. nov. with strain J.5.4.2-L4.2.8T defined as type strain. In addition, we propose the reclassification of Desulfovibrio sulfodismutans as Desulfolutivibrio sulfodismutans comb. nov.  相似文献
