Frequency selectivity of single auditory nerve fibers in the rat was studied using pseudorandom noise based on ternary m-sequences as the stimulus, and the results were compared to those of earlier studies in which noise based on binary m-sequences was used. Pseudorandom noise based on ternary m-sequences has fewer anomalies than noise based on binary m-sequences. Detailed tests using linear and nonlinear filters showed that the present method provides accurate measures of bandwidth and center frequency. Period histograms of the response, locked to the periodicity of the noise, were cross-correlated with one period of the noise to obtain estimates of the impulse response function of the peripheral auditory system. Fourier transforms of these cross-correlograms were used as estimates of the filter function of single auditory nerve fibers. The results obtained using ternary noise were not different from previous results showing a downward shift in center frequency and increase in bandwidth with increasing stimulus intensity for fibers with center frequencies between 1000 and 5000 Hz. The difference between spectral selectivity based on phase-locked responses and that based on discharge rate is discussed.  相似文献

How is binocular motion information integrated in the bilateral network of wide-field motion-sensitive neurons, called lobula plate tangential cells (LPTCs), in the visual system of flies? It is possible to construct an accurate model of this network because a complete picture of synaptic interactions has been experimentally identified. We investigated the cooperative behavior of the network of horizontal LPTCs underlying the integration of binocular motion information and the information representation in the bilateral LPTC network through numerical simulations on the network model. First, we qualitatively reproduced rotational motion-sensitive response of the H2 cell previously reported in vivo experiments and ascertained that it could be accounted for by the cooperative behavior of the bilateral network mainly via interhemispheric electrical coupling. We demonstrated that the response properties of single H1 and Hu cells, unlike H2 cells, are not influenced by motion stimuli in the contralateral visual hemi-field, but that the correlations between these cell activities are enhanced by the rotational motion stimulus. We next examined the whole population activity by performing principal component analysis (PCA) on the population activities of simulated LPTCs. We showed that the two orthogonal patterns of correlated population activities given by the first two principal components represent the rotational and translational motions, respectively, and similar to the H2 cell, rotational motion produces a stronger response in the network than does translational motion. Furthermore, we found that these population-coding properties are strongly influenced by the interhemispheric electrical coupling. Finally, to test the generality of our conclusions, we used a more simplified model and verified that the numerical results are not specific to the network model we constructed.  相似文献

Wide-field motion-sensitive neurons in the lobula plate (lobula plate tangential cells, LPTCs) of the fly have been studied for decades. However, it has never been conclusively shown which cells constitute their major presynaptic elements. LPTCs are supposed to be rendered directionally selective by integrating excitatory as well as inhibitory input from many local motion detectors. Based on their stratification in the different layers of the lobula plate, the columnar cells T4 and T5 are likely candidates to provide some of this input. To study their role in motion detection, we performed whole-cell recordings from LPTCs in Drosophila with T4 and T5 cells blocked using two different genetically encoded tools. In these flies, motion responses were abolished, while flicker responses largely remained. We thus demonstrate that T4 and T5 cells indeed represent those columnar cells that provide directionally selective motion information to LPTCs. Contrary to previous assumptions, flicker responses seem to be largely mediated by a third, independent pathway. This work thus represents a further step towards elucidating the complete motion detection circuitry of the fly.  相似文献

The middle temporal area of the extrastriate visual cortex (area MT) is integral to motion perception and is thought to play a key role in the perceptual learning of motion tasks. We have previously found, however, that perceptual learning of a motion discrimination task is possible even when the training stimulus contains locally balanced, motion opponent signals that putatively suppress the response of MT. Assuming at least partial suppression of MT, possible explanations for this learning are that 1) training made MT more responsive by reducing motion opponency, 2) MT remained suppressed and alternative visual areas such as V1 enabled learning and/or 3) suppression of MT increased with training, possibly to reduce noise. Here we used fMRI to test these possibilities. We first confirmed that the motion opponent stimulus did indeed suppress the BOLD response within hMT+ compared to an almost identical stimulus without locally balanced motion signals. We then trained participants on motion opponent or non-opponent stimuli. Training with the motion opponent stimulus reduced the BOLD response within hMT+ and greater reductions in BOLD response were correlated with greater amounts of learning. The opposite relationship between BOLD and behaviour was found at V1 for the group trained on the motion-opponent stimulus and at both V1 and hMT+ for the group trained on the non-opponent motion stimulus. As the average response of many cells within MT to motion opponent stimuli is the same as their response to non-directional flickering noise, the reduced activation of hMT+ after training may reflect noise reduction.  相似文献

Pacinian corpuscles (PCs) in cat mesentery have been studied extensively to help determine the structural and functional bases of tactile mechanotransduction. Although we, like many other investigators, have found that the mesenteric receptors are anatomically very similar to those found in mammalian skin, few physiological characteristics of the mesenteric PCs and those of the skin have been compared. Action-potential rate-amplitude and frequency characteristics (10 Hz-1 KHz), as well as interval (IH) and peri-stimulus-time (PSTH) histograms in response to sinusoidal displacements were obtained from nerve fibers innervating mesenteric PCs and from PC fibers innervating cat glabrous skin. The intensity characteristics obtained on both preparations showed similar response profiles, including equal slopes for low stimulus intensities (approximately 10, with impulse ratios/20 dB displacement) and one and two impulse/cycle entrainment. The frequency characteristics of both groups were U-shaped with similar low-frequency slopes (-12.5 dB/octave) and bandwidths (Q(3dB) = 1.4). The best frequency for both the tactile PCs' and mesenteric PCs was 250 Hz, which is in the expected range. The IHs showed entrainment and the PSTHs showed neither transient responses nor adaptation to steady-state sinusoidal stimuli. The functional similarity between mesenteric PCs' nerve responses and those of tactile PC afferents, as well as the receptors' anatomical similarity, lead us to suggest that the mesenteric PC can act as a model for those in the skin. Furthermore, since the frequency characteristics of the two PC types are similar, it is concluded that the skin, while attenuating stimulus intensity, does not impart temporal filtering of vibratory stimuli.  相似文献

Orientation sensitive properties of extrastriate area 21a neurons were investigated. Special attention was paid to the qualitative characteristics of neuron responses to the different orientations of visual stimulus motion across neuron classical receptive fields (CRF). The results of experiments have shown that a group of neurons (31%) in area 21a with specialized responses to moving visual stimuli changed their direction selective (DS) characteristics depending on the orientation of the stimulus movement. Some neurons reveal an abrupt drop of the direction sensitivity index (DI) to certain orientation (58%), and some show significant increase of DI at one of applied orientations of stimulus motion (22%). Detailed investigation of response patterns of non-directional neurons to different orientations of stimulus motion have revealed clear-cut qualitative differences, such as different regularities in the distribution of inter-peak inhibitory intervals in the response pattern in dependence of the orientation of stimulus motion. The investigation of neuron CRF stationary functional organization did not reveal correlations between RF's spatial functional organization, and that of qualitative modulations of neuron response patterns. A suggestion was put forward, that visual information central processing of orientation discrimination is a complex integrative process that includes quantitative as well as qualitative transformations of neuron activity.  相似文献

We present observations on the multicyclic scratch reflex in spinal terrapins as produced by electrical stimuli applied to the shell at the specific regions at which a mechanical stimulus produces the reflex. EMGs and hip and knee movements are recorded. The responses to the electrical stimuli are similar to the responses to mechanical stimuli. There is a three phase EMG pattern (Stein and Grossman, 1980), to which the movement pattern is related (Bakker and Crowe, 1982). A response may consist of a series of up to 25 movement cycles with a total time course of up to about 30 sec. The initial cycles of a response are relatively fast (less than 1 sec), but the cycles at the expiration of the response may have a duration of 2-3 sec. A single electrical stimulus pulse is often insufficient to trigger a series response. Instead, a weak EMG burst of a few tenths of a second duration, together with a slight movement, is often seen. However, a second pulse can set the cycle series in motion even after an interval of 40 sec between the pulses. A further booster stimulus pulse given while a reflex response is taking place can increase the speed of the movement. If the booster pulse is given just after cessation of reflex activity it can restart the activity, but this second cycle series is often shorter than the first one. The results indicate that the excitability of the central program generator is not constant. Long duration changes in the excitability are produced within the spinal cord.  相似文献

Visual latencies, and their variation with stimulus attributes, can provide information about the level in the visual system at which different attributes of the image are analysed, and decisions about them made. A change in the colour, structure or movement of a visual stimulus brings about a highly reproducible transient constriction of the pupil that probably depends on visual cortical mechanisms. We measured this transient response to changes in several attributes of visual stimuli, and also measured manual reaction times to the same stimulus changes. Through analysis of latencies, we hoped to establish whether changes in different stimulus attributes were processed by mechanisms at the same or different levels in the visual pathway. Pupil responses to a change in spatial structure or colour are almost identical, but both are ca. 40 ms slower than those to a change in light flux, which are thought to depend largely on subcortical pathways. Manual reaction times to a change in spatial structure or colour, or to the onset of coherent movement, differ reliably, and all are longer than the reaction time to a change in light flux. On average, observers take 184 ms to detect a change in light flux, 6 ms more to detect the onset of a grating, 30 ms more to detect a change in colour, and 37 ms more to detect the onset of coherent motion. The pattern of latency variation for pupil responses and reaction times suggests that the mechanisms that trigger the responses lie at different levels in cortex. Given our present knowledge of visual cortical organization, the long reaction time to the change in motion is surprising. The range of reaction times across different stimuli is consistent with decisions about the onset of a grating being made in V1 and decisions about the change in colour or change in motion being made in V4.  相似文献

Tuning curves are widely used to characterize the responses of sensory neurons to external stimuli, but there is an ongoing debate as to their role in sensory processing. Commonly, it is assumed that a neuron's role is to encode the stimulus at the tuning curve peak, because high firing rates are the neuron's most distinct responses. In contrast, many theoretical and empirical studies have noted that nearby stimuli are most easily discriminated in high-slope regions of the tuning curve. Here, we demonstrate that both intuitions are correct, but that their relative importance depends on the experimental context and the level of variability in the neuronal response. Using three different information-based measures of encoding applied to experimentally measured sensory neurons, we show how the best-encoded stimulus can transition from high-slope to high-firing-rate regions of the tuning curve with increasing noise level. We further show that our results are consistent with recent experimental findings that correlate neuronal sensitivities with perception and behavior. This study illustrates the importance of the noise level in determining the encoding properties of sensory neurons and provides a unified framework for interpreting how the tuning curve and neuronal variability relate to the overall role of the neuron in sensory encoding.  相似文献

We have investigated visual responses to moving stimuli presented to the normal hemifield of a hemianope, GY, who exhibits residual visual function in his right, ''blind'' hemifield. Preliminary experiments established that his perception of moving stimuli localized in his ''blind'' hemifield is retained when a similar stimulus is presented simultaneously in the normal hemifield. In response to a grating stimulus moving horizontally towards fixation in the non-foveal region of the normal, left hemifield, he perceives in addition to a normal motion percept in the left hemifield, a sensation of movement localized in the right hemifield. Qualitatively, this latter is indistinguishable from responses elicited by direct stimulation localized within his ''blind'' hemifield by moving stimuli. We have investigated the characteristics of the mechanisms which induce the ''blind'' field component of GY''s responses to stimulation of the normal hemifield. We show that GY''s sensitivity for detection of movement localized within his ''blind'' hemifield is dependent on the direction of movement, the contrast and the velocity of a grating presented to the normal hemifield. No induced effects were recorded in response to colour or to non-moving, flickering stimuli. We examine the possible contribution of scattered light to our observations, and eliminate this factor by consideration of our experimental results. We discuss the neural mechanisms which may be involved in this response.  相似文献

Recently, there have been remarkable advances in modeling the relationships between the sensory environment, neuronal responses, and behavior. However, most models cannot encompass variable stimulus-response relationships such as varying response latencies and state or context dependence of the neural code. Here, we consider response modeling as a dynamic alignment problem and model stimulus and response jointly by a mixed pair hidden Markov model (MPH). In MPHs, multiple stimulus-response relationships (e.g., receptive fields) are represented by different states or groups of states in a Markov chain. Each stimulus-response relationship features temporal flexibility, allowing modeling of variable response latencies, including noisy ones. We derive algorithms for learning of MPH parameters and for inference of spike response probabilities. We show that some linear-nonlinear Poisson cascade (LNP) models are a special case of MPHs. We demonstrate the efficiency and usefulness of MPHs in simulations of both jittered and switching spike responses to white noise and natural stimuli. Furthermore, we apply MPHs to extracellular single and multi-unit data recorded in cortical brain areas of singing birds to showcase a novel method for estimating response lag distributions. MPHs allow simultaneous estimation of receptive fields, latency statistics, and hidden state dynamics and so can help to uncover complex stimulus response relationships that are subject to variable timing and involve diverse neural codes.  相似文献

How are local motion signals integrated to form a global motion percept? We investigate the neural mechanisms of tactile motion integration by presenting tactile gratings and plaids to the fingertips of monkeys, using the tactile analogue of a visual monitor and recording the responses evoked in somatosensory cortical neurons. The perceived directions of the gratings and plaids are measured in parallel psychophysical experiments. We identify a population of somatosensory neurons that exhibit integration properties comparable to those induced by analogous visual stimuli in area MT and find that these neural responses account for the perceived direction of the stimuli across all stimulus conditions tested. The preferred direction of the neurons and the perceived direction of the stimuli can be predicted from the weighted average of the directions of the individual stimulus features, highlighting that the somatosensory system implements a vector average mechanism to compute tactile motion direction that bears striking similarities to its visual counterpart.  相似文献

I propose a transduction model of the Meissner corpuscle that integrates ideas put forth by Freeman and Johnson and results obtained by Looft. The principal development in the present model is its specification that RA receptor potentials are updated as a linear function of stimulus velocity above baseline; the model thus readily accommodates non-sinusoidal input. It also incorporates modifications to Freeman and Johnson's model proposed by Slavík and Bell, namely a period of refractoriness lasting 1 ms followed by a period of hyperexcitability lasting 13.5 ms. The model is applied to various psychophysical and physiological situations: psychophysical threshold vs. frequency, RA afferent impulse rates vs. intensity, impulse regularity vs. frequency, phase retardation vs. frequency, and responses to non-repeating noise and to complex stimuli. Model output closely matches psychophysical and neurophysiological data. The proposed model thus reliably predicts RA afferent responses to arbitrary stimuli and may facilitate the development of theories relating psychophysical phenomena to their underlying neural representations.  相似文献

Visual motion perception relies on two opposing operations: integration and segmentation. Integration overcomes motion ambiguity in the visual image by spatial pooling of motion signals, whereas segmentation identifies differences between adjacent moving objects. For visual motion area MT, previous investigations have reported that stimuli in the receptive field surround, which do not elicit a response when presented alone, can nevertheless modulate responses to stimuli in the receptive field center. The directional tuning of this "surround modulation" has been found to be mainly antagonistic and hence consistent with segmentation. Here, we report that surround modulation in area MT can be either antagonistic or integrative depending upon the visual stimulus. Both types of modulation were delayed relative to response onset. Our results suggest that the dominance of antagonistic modulation in previous MT studies was due to stimulus choice and that segmentation and integration are achieved, in part, via adaptive surround modulation.  相似文献

To map the encoding of auditory cues in songbirds, multiunit electrophysiological responses to pure tone stimuli (250-5000 Hz) were recorded at 373 sites throughout the avian analogue of the mammalian auditory cortex in the caudal telencephalon of awake, restrained canaries. We found that a dorso-ventral tonotopic gradient from low to high frequency stimuli extends from the rostral field L2 to caudal-most caudo-medial nidopallium (NCM), similar to the frequency-dependent patterns of ZENK gene expression in canary NCM and to electrophysiological responses in other songbird species. However, response characteristics differ across the region. In field L2, responses are vigorous, phasic, and do not habituate to repeated presentations of the same stimulus. In an important subset of field L2 sites, tuning width narrows over the course of the response, which then terminates rapidly at stimulus offset. These properties are associated with inhibition at many nonpreferred frequencies and poststimulus inhibition at responsive frequencies. In contrast, NCM sites habituate to repeated sine waves, have wider tuning and lower amplitude responses, and rarely show inhibitory effects. Tuning curves in NCM are also flatter than those of field L2, and are often multipeaked. In addition, tuning width increases as the response unfolds and poststimulus excitation is often sustained in NCM. In sum, specific parts of the canary caudo-medial telencephalon differ in their response properties, suggesting differential roles in auditory processing. NCM properties, in particular, may allow for response integration across multiple spectrally varying stimulus elements, such as those that occur during birdsong.  相似文献

We recorded cortical potentials evoked by painful CO2 laser stimulation (pain SEP), employing an oddball paradigm in an effort to demonstrate event-related potentials (ERP) associated with pain. In 12 healthy subjects, frequent (standard) pain stimuli (probability 0.8) were delivered to one side of the dorsum of the left hand while rare (target) pain stimuli (probability 0.2) were delivered to the other side of the same hand. Subjects were instructed to perform either a mental count or button press in response to the target stimuli. Two early components (N2 and P2) of the pain SEP demonstrated a Cz maximal distribution, and showed no difference in latency, amplitude or scalp topography between the oddball conditions or between response tasks. In addition, another positive component (P3) following the P2 was recorded maximally at Pz only in response to the target stimuli with a peak latency of 593 msec for the count task and 560 msec for the button press task. Its scalp topography was the same as that for electric and auditory P3. The longer latency of pain P3 can be explained not only by its slower impulse conduction but also by the effects of task difficulty in the oddball paradigm employing the pain stimulus compared with electric and auditory stimulus paradigms. It is concluded that the P3 for the pain modality is mainly related to a cognitive process and corresponds to the P3 of electric and auditory evoked responses, whereas both N2 and P2 are mainly pain-related components.  相似文献

In this study, we investigate the ability of the mammalian auditory pathway to adapt its strategy for temporal processing under natural stimulus conditions. We derive temporal receptive fields from the responses of neurons in the inferior colliculus to vocalization stimuli with and without additional ambient noise. We find that the onset of ambient noise evokes a change in receptive field dynamics that corresponds to a change from bandpass to lowpass temporal filtering. We show that these changes occur within a few hundred milliseconds of the onset of the noise and are evident across a range of overall stimulus intensities. Using a simple model, we illustrate how these changes in temporal processing exploit differences in the statistical properties of vocalizations and ambient noises to increase the information in the neural response in a manner consistent with the principles of efficient coding.  相似文献

Invariant representations of stimulus features are thought to play an important role in producing stable percepts of objects. In the present study, we assess the invariance of neural representations of tactile motion direction with respect to other stimulus properties. To this end, we record the responses evoked in individual neurons in somatosensory cortex of primates, including areas 3b, 1, and 2, by three types of motion stimuli, namely scanned bars and dot patterns, and random dot displays, presented to the fingertips of macaque monkeys. We identify a population of neurons in area 1 that is highly sensitive to the direction of stimulus motion and whose motion signals are invariant across stimulus types and conditions. The motion signals conveyed by individual neurons in area 1 can account for the ability of human observers to discriminate the direction of motion of these stimuli, as measured in paired psychophysical experiments. We conclude that area 1 contains a robust representation of motion and discuss similarities in the neural mechanisms of visual and tactile motion processing.  相似文献

Adaptation in sensory and neuronal systems usually leads to reduced responses to persistent or frequently presented stimuli. In contrast to simple fatigue, adapted neurons often retain their ability to encode changes in stimulus intensity and to respond when novel stimuli appear. We investigated how the level of adaptation of a fly visual motion-sensitive neuron affects its responses to discontinuities in the stimulus, i.e. sudden brief changes in one of the stimulus parameters (velocity, contrast, grating orientation and spatial frequency). Although the neuron''s overall response decreased gradually during ongoing motion stimulation, the response transients elicited by stimulus discontinuities were preserved or even enhanced with adaptation. Moreover, the enhanced sensitivity to velocity changes by adaptation was not restricted to a certain velocity range, but was present regardless of whether the neuron was adapted to a baseline velocity below or above its steady-state velocity optimum. Our results suggest that motion adaptation helps motion-sensitive neurons to preserve their sensitivity to novel stimuli even in the presence of strong tonic stimulation, for example during self-motion.  相似文献
