The human and environmental safety of chemicals in formulated consumer products has for decades been important for product manufacturers and ingredient suppliers. However, prior to the mid-1990s, the underlying product safety data were largely not publicly available. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Chemical Right-to-Know Program and a related program of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development have since been the catalysts for the broad dissemination of standardized hazard datasets for thousands of high production volume (HPV) chemicals in commerce around the globe. The formulated consumer products industry took the additional step of developing and summarizing the science around exposure to their products, largely cleaning products and personal care products, in order to be able to characterize and communicate the safety of their products. Perhaps even more significant was the collection and circulation of information surrounding the habits and practices of product use, and ingredient concentrations in products. The objective of this article is to detail the methods used for collection of this information by the American Cleaning Institute (ACI), and the process by which hazard and exposure information may be used in screening-level risk assessments. In this study the flows of chemical risk information for paint as a consumer product were investigated from a product chain perspective. The main method of research involved semi‐structured interviews with Swedish manufacturers of paint and chemicals. In addition, retailers and consumers were interviewed. The flows of chemical risk information between actors within (e.g., manufacturers, retailers, and consumers) and outside (e.g., industry associations and regulators) the paint product chain are described. Because the European chemical legislation REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of CHemicals) plays a large role in the management of chemical risk information at companies, some consequences of REACH on actors in the paint product chain are described. Examples of such consequences are that importing of chemicals from non–European Union (EU) countries may be discouraged and that some low‐volume chemicals may no longer be produced. However, manufacturers do not yet see these consequences as impediments to innovation. The results of this work show that chemical risk information is most comprehensive during the manufacturing steps of the product chain. This is due not only to tradition and industry initiatives, but also to REACH and other legislation. The results also illustrate the need for evaluation of how chemical risk information is used in different contexts and the importance of directing the right information at the right target group. Following legislative development, more specialized information is required in the safety data sheet (SDS), and because of this many manufacturers find it necessary to create simplified safety sheets that make the most pertinent safety and hazard information easily accessible to individuals that handle the chemicals in their factories. The study found that in creating the simplified safety sheets, the content and use of chemical risk information is evaluated and adjusted for presentation to this particular target group. It is evident that the Swedish Paint and Printing Ink Makers Association plays an important role in the interpretation of legal requirements and even in agreements for providing information that exceeds legal requirements.  相似文献

Abstract

High-throughput methods are now routinely used to rapidly screen chemicals for potential hazard. However, hazard-based decision-making excludes important exposure considerations resulting in an incomplete estimation of chemical safety. Models to estimate exposure exist, but are generally unsuited to keep up with high-throughput demands. The High-Throughput Exposure Assessment Tool (HEAT) is designed to efficiently predict near-field exposure to consumers and workers via inhalation, oral and dermal routes. HEAT is based on well-known modeling algorithms and provides default model parameters to support reasonably conservative exposure estimates. Underlying chemical-specific data are uploaded or entered by the end user. HEAT’s main strength is the flexible tiered screening functionality, which enables exposure estimates for single or multiple chemicals simultaneously. Hypothetical case examples highlighting the application of HEAT to more complex exposure estimates for alternative and aggregate assessments are provided.  相似文献

Bisphenol-A (BPA), a synthetic xenoestrogen, is currently being used to produce a wide variety of consumer products. Humans as well as animals are exposed to this ubiquitous compound through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal exposure. The effect of this compound on superoxide dismutase (SOD), an antioxidant enzyme, isolated from human blood was studied using an enzyme inhibition assay. The mode of interaction of BPA on SOD was investigated using modeling and docking studies. Purified human SOD from erythrocytes was used to study the enzyme inhibition assay of BPA. Molecular level interactions of BPA on SOD were also analyzed by modeling and docking studies. Our study demonstrates that BPA has an inhibitory effect on SOD. The docking results showed that it could bind to the active site residues of SOD and could interfere with the catalytic activity of the enzyme. Our study reveals for the first time that BPA can directly inhibit the enzymatic activity of human SOD and thus impairs the free radical scavenging mechanism.  相似文献

For a natural substance that is mined and for which the world total production is in excess of 3 million tons, it would not be surprising to discover there is considerable exposure to boron (B) and its salts. Human exposure can arise from a variety of natural sources, such as soil and water, and artificially in soils via fertilizer and in waters via discharges through its use in household products and cosmetics, or via its use in pesticides, preservatives, and pharmaceuticals. Receiving waters can also obtain B through industrial usage. Indirect and probably insignificant consumer exposure can arise via the use of borates in glass products, flame retardants, and enamels, these applications comprising the major proportion of borate usage. The general intake of B via its presence in food and water is around 1-7 mg/d, but the range of intake values is large and depends on geographical region, dietary habits (with nuts, fresh and dried fruits, and wine providing particularly rich sources), as well as the method of analysis employed. Drinking waters typically contain <1 mg B/L, but the range is large, and some populations will be exposed to considerably more than 1 mg B/L. B via food and water represents the greatest source of exposure for the general consumer. Sodium borate and boric acid are widely used in consumer products, and perborate is used in detergents, but even though there is a high potential for exposure, the internal dose of B to consumers via its use in household and personal products is very low partly owing to insignificant amounts of dermal absorption across normal skin.  相似文献

Life cycle cost (LCC) computations are a well-established instrument for the evaluation of intertemporal choices in organizations, but they have not been widely adopted by private consumers yet. Consumer investment decisions for products and services with higher initial costs and lower operating costs are potentially subject to numerous cognitive biases, such as present-biased preferences or framing effects. This article suggests a classification for categorizing different cost profiles for eco-innovation and a conceptual model for the influence of LCC information on consumer decisions regarding eco-innovation. It derives hypotheses on the decision-making process for eco-innovation from a theoretical perspective. To verify the hypotheses, the publication reviews empirical studies evaluating the effects of LCC information on consumer investment decisions. It can be concluded that rather than finding ways to make customers pay more for environmentally sound products, the marketing challenge for eco-innovation should be reconceptualized as one of lowering customers' perceived initial cost and increasing awareness of LCC. Most existing studies report a positive effect of LCC information on the purchase likelihood of eco-innovations. Disclosing LCC information provides an important base for long-term thinking on the individual, corporate, and policy levels.  相似文献

The concept of relevance is an obvious component in the success of classroom science investigations, but it is also one of the tenets behind the numerous media advertisements that bombard our senses on a daily basis. The authors decided to capitalize on the similarities between process-based science and the world of advertising by initiating consumer protection investigations with a side venture into the commercial world of Madison Avenue. Advertisers use many strategies in an attempt to convince consumers to buy their products. By analyzing the strategies used in a sales pitch, one begins to recognize that data can be manipulated, facts can be skewed, and visuals can be controlled to enhance product performance. Such analyses require students to look deeper and seek answers beyond the surface of presented information, superficial declarations, visual discrepancies, and verbal innuendo. In other words, such analysis is all about deciphering claims and evidence, making it analogous to science. The antithesis of this procedure, synthesizing a sales campaign for a real or imagined product, is the application of these process skills. In sum, if students can create a successful advertising campaign by using their data, then they understand the art of data manipulation and may, therefore, become better consumers.  相似文献

Activation of the Ah receptor (AhR) by halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons (HAHs), such as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD, dioxin), can produce a wide variety of toxic and biological effects. While recent studies have shown that the AhR can bind and be activated by structurally diverse chemicals, how widespread of these AhR agonists are in environmental, biological and synthetic materials remains to be determined. Using AhR-based assays, we demonstrate the presence of potent AhR agonists in a variety of common commercial and consumer items. Solvent extracts of paper, rubber and plastic products contain chemicals that can bind to and stimulate AhR DNA binding and/or AhR-dependent gene expression in hepatic cytosol, cultured cell lines, human epidermis and zebrafish embryos. In contrast to TCDD and other persistent dioxin-like HAHs, activation of AhR-dependent gene expression by these extracts was transient, suggesting that the agonists are metabolically labile. Solvent extracts of rubber products produce AhR-dependent developmental toxicity in zebrafish in vivo, and inhibition of expression of the metabolic enzyme CYP1A, significantly increased their toxic potency. Although the identity of the responsible AhR-active chemicals and their toxicological impact remain to be determined, our data demonstrate that AhR active chemicals are widely distributed in everyday products.  相似文献

Product takeback calls for sound strategies of product recovery management One such strategy-is the reuse of the components of a product. There are consumer products such as power tools whose most expensive component, the electric motor; offers potential for reuse. Empirical evidence reveals that the lifetime of a motor often exceeds the life-time of the product using it. This article focuses on the reuse of electric motors. For this purpose, a novel circuit was developed that measures, computes, and records parameters strongly correlated with the degradation of a motor during the use stage of the product. This circuit, called electronic data log (EDL), provides valuable insights into the usage patterns of products. The data recorded during the use stage are retrieved after product takeback as a basis for reuse decisions. In this article, the trade-off between higher initial manufacturing cost caused by the EDL and cost savings from the reuse of used motors is analyzed. The problem of misclassifications of used motors is also addressed. It is shown that the return rate of used products is the critical parameter determining the economic efficiency of a motorreuse strategy based on EDLs. Refurbishing products, which are increasingly sold in business‐to‐consumer markets, is a key strategy to reduce waste. Nevertheless, research finds that consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for refurbished products is low. Strategies for a higher WTP are needed in order to grow consumer markets for refurbished products. Eco‐certification of refurbished products may be a key strategy here. Drawing on the consumer WTP literature concerning “green” products, we investigate the impact of independent eco‐certificates. Our analysis is based on a survey of 231 potential customers. The results suggest that, across various product categories, the WTP for products with refurbished components is significantly lower. Adding an eco‐certificate tends to return the WTP toward the virgin product level. We show that consumers with proenvironmental attitudes particularly exhibit green buying behavior. Our findings indicate that eco‐certification is often worthwhile because it enhances the business rationale for producing products with refurbished components.  相似文献

Concerning temporal trends in human reproductive health has prompted concern about the role of environmentally mediated risk factors. The population is exposed to chemicals present in air, water, food and in a variety of consumer and personal care products, subsequently multiple chemicals are found human populations around the globe. Recent reviews find that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can adversely affect reproductive and developmental health. However, there are still many knowledge gaps. This paper reviews some of the key scientific concepts relevant to integrating information from human epidemiologic and model organisms to understand the relationship between EDC exposure and adverse human health effects. Additionally, areas of new insights which influence the interpretation of the science are briefly reviewed, including: enhanced understanding of toxicity pathways; importance of timing of exposure; contribution of multiple chemical exposures; and low dose effects. Two cases are presented, thyroid disrupting chemicals and anti-androgens chemicals, which illustrate how our knowledge of the relationship between EDCs and adverse human health effects is strengthened and data gaps reduced when we integrate findings from animal and human studies.  相似文献

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disrupting environmental contaminant used in a wide variety of products, and BPA metabolites are found in almost everyone’s urine, suggesting widespread exposure from multiple sources. Regulatory agencies estimate that virtually all BPA exposure is from food and beverage packaging. However, free BPA is applied to the outer layer of thermal receipt paper present in very high (∼20 mg BPA/g paper) quantities as a print developer. Not taken into account when considering thermal paper as a source of BPA exposure is that some commonly used hand sanitizers, as well as other skin care products, contain mixtures of dermal penetration enhancing chemicals that can increase by up to 100 fold the dermal absorption of lipophilic compounds such as BPA. We found that when men and women held thermal receipt paper immediately after using a hand sanitizer with penetration enhancing chemicals, significant free BPA was transferred to their hands and then to French fries that were eaten, and the combination of dermal and oral BPA absorption led to a rapid and dramatic average maximum increase (Cmax) in unconjugated (bioactive) BPA of ∼7 ng/mL in serum and ∼20 µg total BPA/g creatinine in urine within 90 min. The default method used by regulatory agencies to test for hazards posed by chemicals is intra-gastric gavage. For BPA this approach results in less than 1% of the administered dose being bioavailable in blood. It also ignores dermal absorption as well as sublingual absorption in the mouth that both bypass first-pass liver metabolism. The elevated levels of BPA that we observed due to holding thermal paper after using a product containing dermal penetration enhancing chemicals have been related to an increased risk for a wide range of developmental abnormalities as well as diseases in adults.  相似文献

Volatile organic chemicals (flavours, aromas) are the sensory principles of many consumer products and govern their acceptance and market success. Flavours from microorganisms compete with the traditional agricultural sources. Screening for overproducers, elucidation of metabolic pathways and precursors and application of conventional bioengineering has resulted in a set of more than 100 commercial aroma chemicals derived via biotechnology. Various routes may lead to volatile metabolites: De novo synthesis from elementary biochemical units, degradation of larger substrates such as lipids, and functionalization of immediate flavour precursor molecules. More recently, the field was stimulated by the increasing preference of alienated consumers for products bearing the label “natural”, and by the vivid discussion on healthy and “functional” food ingredients. The unmistakable call for sustainable sources and environmentally friendly production is forcing the industry to move towards a greener chemistry. Progress is expected from the toolbox of genetic engineering which is expected to help in identifying metabolic bottlenecks and in creating novel high-yielding strains. Bioengineering, in a complementary way, provides promising technical options, such as improved substrate dosage, gas-phase or two-phase reactions and in situ product recovery.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large class of organic chemicals typically found as mixtures in the aquatic environment from natural, petrogenic, and pyrogenic sources. People can be exposed to PAHs through ingestion or dermal contact with contaminated sediments or through ingestion of finfish and shellfish exposed to contaminated sediments. Although more than 100 PAHs have been identified, human exposure and risk are commonly evaluated for 18 individual PAHs. Other PAHs, such as alkylated PAHs, likely contribute to biological activity of environmental PAH mixtures; however, insufficient toxicity data are available to quantify their potential risk. This article presents an initial evaluation of the potential for human health risk from exposure to alkylated PAHs in sediment and fish. Individual alkylated PAHs have been observed to have potentially mutagenic, tumor-promoting, or carcinogenic activity. However, except for 1-and 2-methylnaphthalene, insufficient toxicity data are available to quantify toxicity or cancer risk from exposure to individual alkylated PAHs or mixtures of alkylated PAHs. This article describes a proposed strategy to better understand the potential human health risk from exposure to alkylated PAHs. Implementation of this strategy will contribute to evaluations of human exposure to complex PAH mixtures in the environment.  相似文献

Exposure of marine animals to certain organic and metal pollutants is thought to enhance reactive oxygen species (ROS) production with concomitant alterations of antioxidant defence mechanisms. Some of these organic pollutants cause peroxisome proliferation, a process resulting also in possible enhanced production of ROS. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two organic xenobiotics, benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) and di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), as well as the effects of cadmium (Cd), on antioxidant and peroxisomal enzymes and on peroxisomal volume density in the digestive gland of mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis Lmk., experimentally exposed for 21 days. Special attention was paid to the interactive effects of organic and metal compounds by exposing one group of mussels to a mixture of B(a)P and Cd. Exposure of mussels to Cd caused a decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, in Mn-SOD protein levels and in volume density of peroxisomes. B(a)P exposure significantly increased catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and inhibited Mn-SOD after 21 days of exposure. B(a)P also caused a slight increase in acyl-CoA oxidase (AOX) activity and peroxisomal volume density after 21 days of exposure. Cd tended to inhibit changes provoked by B(a)P, indicating that responses to organic xenobiotics can be modulated by concomitant exposure to metal contaminants. Exposure to DEHP increased catalase and AOX and inhibited SOD activity and Mn-SOD protein levels. In conclusion, peroxisome proliferation, measured as an increase of the peroxisomal enzymes catalase and AOX (up to 1.53-fold for AOX), is a specific response to organic contaminants such as B(a)P and DEHP, whereas Cd does not cause peroxisome proliferation. Thus, peroxisome proliferation may be a specific biomarker of organic pollutants in mussels. Both organic and metal pollutants inhibited SOD activity and protein levels (up to 0.21-fold for Mn-SOD protein levels), the latter offering potential as general marker of pollution.  相似文献

In scientific literature, the most accepted definition of consumer neuroscience or neuromarketing is that it is a field of study concerning the application of neuroscience methods to analyze and understand human behavior related to markets and marketing exchanges. First, it might seem strange that marketers would be interested in using neuroscience to understand consumer's preferences. Yet in practice, the basic goal of marketers is to guide the design and presentation of products in such a way that they are highly compatible with consumer preferences. To understand consumers preferences, several standard research tools are commonly used by marketers, such as personal interviews with the consumers, scoring questionnaries gathered from consumers, and focus groups. The reason marketing researchers are interested in using brain imaging tools instead of simply asking people for their preferences in front of marketing stimuli, arises from the assumption that people cannot (or do not want to) fully explain their preference when explicitly asked. Researchers in the field hypothesize that neuroimaging tools can access information within the consumer's brain during the generation of a preference or the observation of a commercial advertisement. The question of will this information be useful in further promoting the product is still up for debate in marketing literature. From the marketing researchers point of view, there is a hope that this body of brain imaging techniques will provide an efficient tradeoff between costs and benefits of the research. Currently, neuroscience methodology includes powerful brain imaging tools based on the gathering of hemodynamic or electromagnetic signals related to the human brain activity during the performance of a relevant task for marketing objectives. Liking rating data of 8 pigmeat products from 99 Australian females aged 25-45 was analyzed using MDPREF. A line scale extended past the anchor points, 100 mm long and anchored by the words 'dislike extremely' and 'like extremely' was used. Liking was judged on the product name alone, no products were actually tasted. MDPREF configures products and consumers so that individual preferences (or product order preference) can be obtained. The order of product preference from the rating scores and order of product preference from the MDPREF analysis for each consumer was matched. It was found that the preference order for each consumer from the MDPREF map matched the order shown by rating scores in about 25% of cases. MDPREF produced 17% of consumers who had no products in the correct position for the preference order. Only 1% of consumers had all eight product preferences in the correct order.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Previous studies in adults and animals with high level exposure to organic solvents suggested impairments in visual functioning. The objective of this pilot study was to examine the effects of maternal occupational exposure to organic solvents during pregnancy on offspring color vision and visual acuity, the development of which may be especially vulnerable to organic solvent exposure. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 32 offspring of women who were exposed occupationally to organic solvents during pregnancy compared with 27 nonexposed children. Monocular and binocular color vision and visual acuity were assessed using the Minimalist Test and the Cardiff Cards, respectively. Children with known hereditary color vision loss were excluded. RESULTS: Solvent-exposed children had significantly higher error scores on red-green and blue-yellow color discrimination, as well as poorer visual acuity compared with the control group. Exposure index (an estimated measure of exposure intensity) was not significantly related to color discrimination or visual acuity score. Despite excluding all children with a known family history of color vision loss, clinical red-green color vision loss was found among 3 of the 32 exposed children compared with none of the matched controls. CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary findings suggest that occupational exposure to organic solvents during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of color vision and visual acuity impairment in offspring. The importance of routine visual function screening in risk assessment after prenatal exposure to chemicals warrants further attention.  相似文献

Humans are potentially exposed to phthalate esters (PEs) through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. Studies quantifying exposure to PEs include “biomarker studies” and “indirect studies.” Biomarker studies use measurements of PE metabolites in urine to back-calculate exposure to the parent diester, while indirect studies use the concentration of the PE in each medium of exposure and the rate of intake of that medium to quantify intake of the PE. In this review, exposure estimates from biomarker and indirect studies are compiled and compared for seven PEs to determine if there are regional differences and if there is a preferred approach. The indirect and biomarker methods generally agree with each other within an order of magnitude and discrepancies are explained by difficulties in accounting for use of consumer products, uncertainty concerning absorption, regional differences, and temporal changes. No single method is preferred for estimating intake of all PEs; it is suggested that biomarker estimates be used for low molecular weight PEs for which it is difficult to quantify all sources of exposure and either indirect or biomarker methods be used for higher molecular weight PEs. The indirect methods are useful in identifying sources of exposure while the biomarker methods quantify exposure.  相似文献

This paper proposes a system dynamics approach to model consumers’ responses to carbon labelled products by showing how the number of consumers is varied visually. Three categories of the consumers are defined, i.e., potential, ordinary and loyal consumers, to reflect their different preferences to the carbon labelled products. Two case scenarios are presented to demonstrate the application of the proposed approach, in which the consumers’ preferences to the carbon labelled and non-labelled milk, as well as the carbon labelled milk with different fat contents are simulated. The result shows that both of the two scenarios have the similar variation in the number of the defined consumers, and especially the number of loyal consumer accounts for the largest proportion. In addition, public awareness, education level, critical premium and perceived consumer effectiveness are identified as key factors to have an impact on the purchasing behaviour. The limitations of this approach are then discussed, laying a foundation for further work.  相似文献
