Synopsis The spawning behaviour of dwarf and normal arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, was studied through trough observations in October 1988. The experimental fish consisted of reared, three-summer old progeny of artificially bred dwarf and normal charr from an isolated body of water in central Sweden. The spawning behaviour of three normal female charrs was studied and video-recorded. The study showed that the arctic charr is potentially polyandric both within and between forms. The normal female was courted and mated both by normal and dwarf males. It was also noted that antagonistic behaviour on behalf of the female was much more common towards dwarf males than normal males. Guarding tactics were only observed in normal males, whereas sneaking tactics were employed both by dwarf and normal males. The dwarf as well as normal males mated the female charr either by courting the female or by joining the spawning fish at oviposition. Only dwarf males were observed resting silently on the bottom close to the redd.  相似文献

A noticeable effect of sulfite treatment was observed on the plasma ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity of rats with normal sulfite oxidase activity when compared to normal controls. The plasma levels of selenium, iron, and zinc were unaffected by sulfite in normal and sulfite oxidase (SOX)-deficient rats. While plasma level of Mn was decreasing, plasma Cu level increased in SOX-deficient rats. Treating SOX-deficient groups with sulfite did not alter plasma level of Mn but made plasma level of Cu back to its normal level. This is the first evidence that Cu and Mn status were affected in experimental sulfite oxidase deficiency induced by low molybdenum diet with tungsten addition deserving further research to determine the underlying mechanisms of these observations in experimental sulfite oxidase deficiency.  相似文献

Attempts were made to induce pregnancy in androgen-treated immature rats. Treatment with PMSG alone, which causes ovulation in normal immature rats, failed to cause ovulation in androgenized rats. However, treatment with PMSG plus LHRH was effective in causing ovulation. After ovulation, some of the normal and androgenized rats mated. Normal mated rats became pregnant but androgenized mated rats did not. However, when a pituitary gland was transplanted from a normal rat into the kidney capsule of an androgenized rat to maintain functional corpora lutea, implantation occurred in some of the mated animals. The positive decidual reaction in the uteri of such androgenized rats was similar to that observed in normal rats. These results suggest that the uterine sensitivity to blastocyst implantation of androgenized immature rats may be normal.  相似文献

The effects of carbon monoxide (CO), polycythemia (PC), and cardiomegaly (CM) on cardiovascular function were investigated in adult rats in which the latter two conditions were induced by 500 ppm CO inhalation for 5-6 weeks. Using an anesthetized open-chest preparation, these rats were compared with normal rats. With CO + PC + CM present, resting cardiac index, stroke index, stroke work, and minute work were elevated (heart rate also in the conscious state), while left ventricle end-diastolic pressure (LVDP) was normal. With PC + CM after CO washout, cardiac index and stroke index returned to normal at normal LVDP. Minute work, peripheral resistance, heart rate, and blood pressure, however, remained above normal. With CM alone, minute work, +dP/dtmax, +dF/dtmax, peripheral resistance, blood pressure, and LVDP declined from the condition with PC + CM. Although most cardiovascular parameters increased in the three conditions above with acutely increased LVDP, only with CM alone was performance augmentation normal. The results (i) reveal several characteristics of the hemodynamic response to chronic carboxyhemoglobinemia, (ii) suggest that the transient hypertension attending CO elimination in the presence of PC results from rapid reversal of peripheral vasodilatation, (iii) demonstrate decreased cardiac functional reserve with CO and (or) polycythemia upon preload challenge, and (iv) provide evidence for the benign nature of CO-induced cardiomegaly alone, on heart function.  相似文献

Transplantation experiments have led to the idea that developmental gradients are involved in the patterning processes of hydra. Head activation and head inhibition gradients appear to be involved in head formation. More could be learned about pattern formation if these gradients could be altered in the animal. One approach to this end is to study mutants suspected of having altered gradients. Such mutants may be identified by their altered morphology. In this investigation the aberrant, a morphological mutant of Hydra attenuata, was examined for alterations in its gradients. The aberrant was found to have changes in its inhibition and polarity properties. The inhibition gradient was steeper than normal and the level of inhibition was higher than normal near the head. In addition, the amount of inhibition transmitted from the head was greater than normal, while the amount of inhibition transmitted through the gastric region was less than normal. The polarity of the aberrant gastric region was more difficult than normal to reverse, and the aberrant extremities caused faster polarity reversal than normal extremities. The significance of these changes is discussed in relation to pattern formation.  相似文献

Finite element scaling analysis is used to study differences in morphology between the craniofacial complex of normal individuals and those affected with the syndromes of Apert and Crouzon. Finite element scaling quantifies the differences in shape and size between forms without reference to any fixed, arbitrary registration point or orientation line and measures the amount of form change required to deform one object into another. Two-dimensional coordinates of landmarks digitized from annual sets of cephalometric radiographs were used in the analysis. A simple tabulation shows no difference in variances between the normal and pathological samples. A test of mean differences depicts the Apert and Crouzon morphologies as significantly different from normal. The Apert palate differs from normal in shape in the older age groups analyzed, and palatal size differences are most common at the posterior nasal spine. The Apert pituitary fossa and basi-occiput are significantly larger than normal. The Crouzon pituitary fossa is also larger than normal, but the difference is not always significant. The typical morphology of the Crouzon nose is due more to differences in shape than size. The Crouzon basi-occiput is significantly smaller than normal. An age association of the differences between the normal and pathological craniofacies was found in Apert syndrome but not in Crouzon syndrome. Apert syndrome is characterized by a more homogeneous pattern of craniofacial dysmorphology from 6 months to 18 years of age than Crouzon syndrome.  相似文献

Pituitary dwarfism (hGHD) is known to be associated with trace element deficiency, which causes improper functioning of the involved endocrine system. Previously, we reported on the head hair concentrations of zinc, copper, manganese, and iron from a total of 418 normal subjects (154 male and 264 female). In this report, we analyzed the head hair concentrations of the same four trace metals of 103 hGHD children (60 male and 43 female) under treatment with human growth hormone (hGH). These subjects ranged in age from 5 to 18 yr. The results were compared with 338 agematched normal subjects (120 male and 218 female). Both male and female hGHD showed approx 1.7 times higher zinc concentrations than normal subjects. Cheruvanky et al. reported a similar trend but with a slightly lower difference between hGHD and normal subjects. The average copper content in the hair of both male and female subjects also showed higher values for the hGHD than for the normal subjects, a trend similar to the values reported by Teraoka et al. In the case of manganese, the concentrations in hair of the hGHD were approx 50% of the values in the normal subjects. Head hair concentrations of iron in the hGHD were commensurate with the normal subjects. Because the content of trace elements in hair varies with the age of subjects, as a control, we investigated the head hair concentration of zinc from 20 healthy girls ranging in age from 10 to 18 yr. The average zinc concentration decreased from 10 to 12 yr, but no clear relation to age was observed from 13 yr and older. These trends were similar to our previous report. The zinc concentration in hair and body weight gain over a year was negatively correlated. The age variation in the content of zinc, copper, manganese, and iron in hair was measured comparing hGHD with the normal subjects in various ages. Concerning the zinc-level variation of hGHD and normal subjects, there were conspicuous differences between hGHD and normal subjects. For copper, the variations in concentration with age were similar to zinc. Regarding the age variations for manganese, hGHD had lower concentrations in hair compared to the normal subjects throughout adolescence (11–18 yr). We have studied the effects between the hair and these trace element concentrations in hGHD before and after hGH administration. These results suggest that hGH affects the metabolism of these trace elements.  相似文献

An ontogenetic survey of the basic protein of myelin, common to both central and peripheral nervous systems, was carried out on normal C57Bl and five dysmyelinating mutant mice. Myelin basic protein (MBP) was quantified by radioimmunoassay in the optic and sciatic nerves of mice from birth to adult stages, giving special attention to the premyelinating and early myelination periods. In the optic nerves of normal mice, MBP was already detectable at birth but the active period of myelin deposition was shown to occur after day 10 postnatal. The timing and rate of accumulation of MBP were normal in Trembler. In contrast, they were abnormal in the other mutants. In the quaking mouse, the active period of MBP deposition was delayed, and its final concentration represented no more than 12% of normal in the adult. No active period of MBP deposition was observed in the other mutants. In the jimpy mouse, a slow accumulation of MBP resulted in a final concentration reaching 2% of the normal value at 25 days. In mild and shiverer mice, the MBP was hardly detectable. In the sciatic nerves of normal mice, the active period of MBP deposition occurred between days 3 and 12 postnatal. Optical spectroscopy methods are fast emerging as potential alternatives for early diagnosis of cancer. A Raman spectroscopy method for discrimination of normal and malignant oral tissues has been developed by us earlier. It is necessary to evaluate and establish the validity of the approach before it can be routinely used. In the present study, our Raman spectroscopy investigations are extended further to evaluate the efficacy of the technique to discriminate between normal, inflammatory, premalignant, and malignant conditions in oral tissue. Spectral profiles of normal, malignant, premalignant, and inflammatory conditions show pronounced differences between one another. Spectra of normal tissues can be attributed mainly to lipids whereas pathological tissue spectra are dominated by proteins. Principal components analysis (PCA) of the spectral data sets belonging to the four different categories showed that scores of factors differentiated between normal and all pathological conditions but gave only poor discrimination among the three pathological states. PCA combined with multiparameter limit tests allow match/mismatch criteria to be applied to test samples when pathologically certified calibration sets are available in each class. It is shown that by this method all the four tissue types could be discriminated and diagnosed correctly. The biochemical differences between normal and pathological conditions of oral tissue are also discussed from spectral differences of the different classes of spectra.  相似文献

Correlations between marine habitat degradation and the prevalence of abnormalities and diseases in populations can provide a starting point for understanding the effects of changes in environmental conditions on marine organisms. The present study characterized the features of scale disorientation (SD), a common morphological anomaly encountered in pinfish, Lagodon rhomboides, in Biscayne Bay, Florida (U.S.A.). Scale disorientation consisted of discrete patches of scales rotated dorsally or ventrally away from the normal scale position without any projection of the scales outwards from the body surface. The direction of scale growth within the patches varied from normal to a minor misalignment to a complete reversal of direction. The severity of SD, defined as the percentage of body surface area affected, varied from 1 to 34% with a mean of 9.3%. Affected fish monitored in the laboratory demonstrated a proportional growth of SD areas such that the percentage of body surface affected did not change as the fish grew. Scale disorientation was more prevalent in the northern region of the bay, an area known to be more contaminated. Scales from SD areas exhibited significantly abnormal morphology with larger average focus diameter, smaller size, more elongate shape and fewer radii relative to normal scales. Experimental removal of scales demonstrated that normal scales regrew in normal orientation and morphology while those from SD areas regrew in abnormal orientations and morphologies. Experiments in which fish were exposed to acute and chronic injuries indicated that these physical traumas were insufficient to directly induce formation of scale disorientations typical of those seen in the wild. Observations of pinfish in the laboratory revealed that SD areas can appear spontaneously in normal juvenile and adult fish. These new SD areas developed relatively rapidly, did not require prior scale loss and remained stable in size after first appearance. Although the etiology of SD remains unknown, the significant difference in prevalence of this syndrome between regions of Biscayne Bay having different levels of sediment contaminants suggests that environmental factors may be important in development of SD.  相似文献

Summary Some twenty cases of dispermic chimeras with the karyotype 46,XX/46,XY, discovered because of gonadal dysplasias or a true hermaphroditism, have been reported. This is a report of a phenotypically normal man with 46,XX/46,XY chimerism in whom a prepubertal finding of positive X-chromatin was interpreted as Klinefelter syndrome. The diagnosis was revised 11 years later when the family doctor, who doubted the earlier diagnosis because of the patient's normal-sized testes, sent him to an outpatient clinic. The young man was 23 years old, athletic (74kg, 180cm), with normal body proportions, normal sexual hair distribution, normal libido and potency, normal endocrine parameters, and a normal spermiogram. The karyotype revealed an XX/XY mosaic in a proportion of 1:2. An identical set of maternal markers (Q- and C-banding) was present in male and female cells. Differences were found with respect to two paternal markers. Furthermore, blood, serum, and red cell enzyme groups in five systems showed two phenotypes, again with duality of paternal origin. It is concluded that a positive X-chromatin in prepuperty, especially in the absence of supporting clinical features, must be followed by a karyotype study.  相似文献

Two new electrophoretic variants of human triosephosphate isomerase (TPI) have been partially purified and characterized. The TPI Manchester variant, a cathodally migrating electrophoretic allozyme identified in an individual with the phenotype TPI 1-Manchester, is associated with a normal level of enzyme activity in erythrocytes and normal kinetic properties. It is very thermolabile at 55 and 57° C, although it is not uniquely sensitive to either guanidine-HCl or urea denaturation. The TPI Hiroshima-2 variant is an anodally migrating allozyme (the phenotype of proband is TPI 1-Hiroshima-2) with normal activity and kinetic properties and also normal stability characteristics. It is inactivated less by antisera raised against normal human TPI than either the normal or the Manchester allozyme. Dissociation-reassociation experiments utilizing these allozymes have confirmed that normal human red blood cell TPI isozymes are produced by a sequence of reactions (presumably deamidations) involving alternating subunits.Financial support was derived from Contract EY-77-C-02-2828 from the Department of Energy.  相似文献

The growth of charr ( Salvelinus willughbii Günther ) caught in Windermere from 1941–1952 has been studied. Scales were used for determination of age and back-calculation of length for age. Autumn and spring spawners, males and females, and charr of normal and dwarf growth were treated separately. In fish of normal growth, the spring spawners were significantly smaller than the autumn spawners at ages 1 and 2 years, and significantly larger from age 4 years onwards. There was little difference in growth between males and females within the two spawning populations. Charr of lengths of less than 200 mm at age 4 years were considered to be dwarfs. Mean lengths at capture of male charr were: autumn spawners normal growth 272 mm, dwarf 218 mm; spring spawners normal growth 327 mm, dwarf 194 mm. The oldest recorded age was 8 years.  相似文献

Mean plasma testosterone levels (± S.D.), using Sephadex LH-20 and competitive protein binding, were 629 ± 160 ng/100 ml for a group of 27 normal adult men, 650 ± 205 ng/100 ml for 27 impotent men with normal secondary sex characteristics, 644 ± 178 ng/100 ml for 20 men with oligospermia, and 563 ± 125 ng/100 ml for 16 azoospermic men. None of these values differ significantly. For 21 men with clinical evidence of hypogonadism the mean plasma testosterone (± S.D.), at 177 ± 122 ng/100 ml, differed significantly (P < 0·001) from that of the normal men.The mean testosterone binding affinities (as measured by the reciprocal of the quantity of plasma needed to bind 50% of 3H-testosterone tracer) were similar for normal, impotent, and oligospermic men. Though lower for azoospermic men the difference was not significant (P >0·1). For 12 of the 16 hypogonadal males the testosterone binding affinity was normal, but raised binding affinities, similar to those found in normal adult females or prepubertal boys (about twice normal adult male levels), were found in four cases of delayed puberty. These findings help to explain why androgen therapy is usually useless in the treatment of impotence.  相似文献

Biotin uptake, utilization, and efflux were studied in normal and biotin-deficient cultured rat hepatocytes. Biotin-deficient cells accumulate about 16-fold more biotin than do normal cells when incubated with a physiological concentration of biotin for 24 h. This difference is due to the greater amount of protein-bound biotin relative to free biotin in biotin-deficient hepatocytes, and is attributable to the presence of more apocarboxylases in deficient cells. The rate of biotin uptake and the rate of activation of the carboxylases, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, pyruvate carboxylase, propionyl-CoA carboxylase, and beta-methylcrotonyl-CoA carboxylase, are proportional to the concentration of exogenous biotin. Increases in carboxylase activities are proportional to the concentration of biotin only at exogenous biotin concentrations of less than 410 nM. Concentrations of 410 nM or more biotin increase carboxylase activities to normal or near normal. Biocytin inhibits biotin uptake at very high concentrations, whereas desthiobiotin and lipoic acid have no effect. Biocytin in the medium results in carboxylase activation either intracellularly or extracellularly by conversion to biotin by biotinidase. Investigation of the efflux of biotin from normal and biotin-deficient cells preincubated with the vitamin showed greater retention of biotin by biotin-deficient cells than by normal cells over 24 h. Retention of free biotin is similar in biotin-deficient and normal cells. The greater amount of biotin retained by biotin-deficient cells is accounted for by the greater amount of bound biotin in these cells. These results suggest that the free and bound biotin pools are independently regulated. The ready loss of free biotin from these cells has implications for the treatment of inherited, biotin-responsive carboxylase deficiencies.  相似文献

Proteus L forms were disrupted by osmotic shock, and the sedimentable material present in the homogenate was further fragmented in a Sorvall pressure cell. The pressure cell was also used for disrupting normal Proteus cells. The homogenates obtained were fractionated by differential centrifugation. Purified endotoxins were isolated from the major fractions by phenol extraction. Material extracted with phenol from the membrane fraction of the L forms was about as toxic and pyrogenic on a weight basis as the typical enterobacterial endotoxins isolated from cell walls of normal bacteria. The yield of extract from L forms was about one-third of that from an equal weight of normal bacteria. No differences in the gross chemical composition of the phenol extracts from the L forms and the normal cells could be ascertained. A close serological relationship existed between extracts obtained from two L forms and their respective parent bacteria, but no such relationship was found in the case of the third L form studied and its parent bacterium. Diaminopimelic acid was not detected in the membranes of the L forms, but these membranes contained most of the succinic dehydrogenase of the organisms. Only small amounts of this enzyme were present in the wall fraction of normal bacteria. The data obtained suggest that precursors of the Proteus endotoxins are formed either in the soluble protoplasm of normal cells and L forms or at sites on the membrane from which they are readily liberated into the protoplasm, whereas the final steps of the synthesis of these toxins take place at the cytoplasmic membrane. In normal cells, much endotoxin is transported to and concentrated in the walls.  相似文献

卷蛾分索赤眼蜂Trichogrammatoidea bactrae Nagaraja和拟澳洲赤眼蜂Trichogramma confusum Viggiani是小菜蛾Plutella xylostella (L.)的优势寄生蜂。本研究利用“Y”型管测定了2种赤眼蜂对小菜蛾P. xylostella利他素-卵表和腹部鳞片13种饱和烷烃的嗅觉反应。结果显示: 卷蛾分索赤眼蜂交配雌蜂进入2, 6, 10, 14-四甲基十五烷、正十五烷、正十七烷处理区的百分数分别为80.65%, 68.75%和66.67%, 表明这3种烷烃对卷蛾分索赤眼蜂交配雌蜂有显著的吸引作用, 其他10种饱和烷烃对卷蛾分索赤眼蜂雌蜂无明显作用。拟澳洲赤眼蜂进入2, 6, 10, 14-四甲基十五烷、正三十五烷和正十五烷处理区的数目分别占84.38%, 70%和62.16%, 表明其对拟澳洲赤眼蜂交配雌蜂起着显著的吸引作用, 而另外10种烷烃对拟澳洲赤眼蜂雌蜂无作用。卷蛾分索赤眼蜂和拟澳洲赤眼蜂未交配雄蜂进入13种烷烃处理区和对照区的时间均无显著差异, 表明利他素各组分对2种赤眼蜂未交配雄蜂均无吸引作用。  相似文献

A newborn male referred for genetic investigation because of a large sized head and dysplastic ears, but with apparently normal male genitalia was found to have a deletion of all of the brightly fluorescent part of the long are of chromosome Y and absence of the Y fluorescent body on buccal smear. His father and his two brothers had normal Y chromosomes. Social and family history as well as marker investigation make illegitimacy most unlikely and leaves an occurrence of a new chromosomal mutation in the father the most probably interpretation. Follow-up of the infant to the age of 9 months revealed a large baby with normal development.  相似文献
