Forty heifers at the late stage of gestation were randomly assigned into five groups. Heifers were balanced for age, weight, and time of calving in each group. Four and 2?weeks before expected time of calving, the heifers were injected with 0?ml (C), 10?ml (T1), 20?ml (T2), 30?ml (T3), and 40?ml (T4) Se and VE supplements, respectively. Each milliliter of the supplement contained of 0.5?mg Se as sodium selenite and 50?IU of dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate. Blood samples were collected from the heifers 4?weeks before expected calving and at calving day and from the calves at birth and 7?days of age. The serum Se and immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations, white blood cell and differential leukocyte counts were measured. The Se concentrations in the sera of the heifers before the injections of Se and VE supplements were the same among the groups (P?>?0.05), but after calving were significantly increased in the treated heifers (P??0.05). The white blood cell counts were higher in calves of heifers in groups T3 and T4 compared with the control group at 7?days of age (P?相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of selenium (Se) and alpha-tocopherol supplementation on uterine involution and ovarian function in dairy heifers fed a prepartum diet containing low concentrations of Se and alpha-tocopherol. Twenty-four pregnant Friesian heifers were randomly allocated to one of four experimental groups in a 2 x 2 design balanced for age and body weight. Prepartum treatments consisted of supplementation with either 2 intraruminal Se pellets or 3600 mg of alpha-tocopherol p.o. 4 times per wk, or both. Control animals received no supplementation. For 8 wk before calving, the heifers were fed exclusively on pasture hay which contained less than 10 microg/kg of Se and 19 mg/kg of alpha-tocopherol. After calving, the heifers grazed perennial ryegrass and white clover pasture. Concentrations of Se and alpha-tocopherol in serum for the prepartum heifers of the control group were 10 ng/ml and 1.3 microg/ml, respectively, indicating deficiencies of these nutrients. Treatment with Se and alpha-tocopherol increased prepartum serum concentrations of Se and alpha-tocopherol to 74 ng/ml and 5 microg/ml, respectively (P < 0.001). However, treatment with Se, alpha-tocopherol, or both, failed to enhance uterine involution, hasten resumption of postpartum ovarian activity or reduce the incidence of clinical postpartum abnormalities. These findings suggest that postpartum reproductive dysfunction is not a primary feature of moderate Se or vitamin E deficiency of cattle at pasture.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of two different rumen-protected fat supplements, on reproductive performance and milk production, in grass-based spring calving cows. Two hundred and one Holstein-Friesian cows with an average lactation number of 3.6 (20% first lactation, 16% second lactation and 64% third lactation or greater) were grouped into blocks of three on the basis of calving date, lactation number and previous lactation milk yield for cows of second lactation or greater and on the basis of calving date for first lactation animals. From within-blocks individual animals were assigned at random, within 10 days post-calving, to one of the following three treatments: (1) Megalac Plus 3% (MP; 0.4kg/day, containing Ca salt of palm fatty acids and Ca salt of methionine hydroxy analogue), (2) Megapro Gold (MPG; 1.5kg/day, containing Ca salt of palm fatty acids, extracted rapeseed meal and whey permeate), and (3) Control (C; unsupplemented). Cows were supplemented for on average 103 days (range 54-134 days). The average milk yield over the first 12 weeks of lactation was higher (P<0.05) for both fat supplements compared to C and was higher for MP compared to C over the full lactation. Both supplements reduced (P<0.05) milk protein concentration over the first 6 weeks of lactation. MPG increased (P<0.05) conception rate to first service compared to C. Conception rate to first service was similar (P=0.14) on MP compared to C. For pregnancy to second service, C had a higher (P<0.05) conception rate than MP. There were no significant differences between treatments in overall pregnancy rate, services per conception, number of cows served in the first 3 weeks of the breeding season or the 6-weeks in-calf rate. Comparing the combined fat treatments to C resulted in a higher (P<0.05) conception rate to first service for the fat treatments but no significant difference in overall pregnancy rate. In conclusion, fat supplements increased conception rate to first service but did not significantly affect the proportion of cows pregnant at the end of the breeding season.  相似文献

Risk factors for stillbirth, defined as birth of a dead calf or a calf dead within 24 h after parturition, were studied in Holstein heifers. Data came from an overall 4-yr prospective survey conducted in French dairy herds. Only heifers that delivered a single calf were included in the study. The stillbirth incidence was 6.9%. The predictive indicators of stillbirth risk were: gestation length, prepartum body condition and dirtiness scores, biochemical and hematological blood parameters measured during the last 2 mo of gestation, and calving conditions. Multiple logistic regressions were run using herd, calving year, calving season, blood sampling-to-parturition interval, and body scoring-to-parturition interval as the fixed effects. The results, expressed as the ratio of the odds of disease occurrence in the exposed and non-exposed subgroups (OR), indicated that dystocia and a body condition score (BCS) higher than 4 before calving were significant risk factors for stillbirth (OR=14.6, P<0.0001 and OR=2.98, P<0.05, respectively). Prepartum circulating neutrophil counts higher than 1950/mm3 (OR=0.50, P<0.05) were associated with a lower risk of stillbirth. A higher occurrence of placental retention, lower fertility and a lower 305-d milk yield were significant consequences of stillbirth.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of prepartum somatotropin injection in late-pregnant Holstein heifers on metabolism, milk production and resumption of postpartum ovulation. For this study, 31 late-pregnant Holstein heifers were used. The heifers were assigned randomly into two treatments: (1) 500 mg sc injections of somatotropin (somatotropin treatment, n = 15) at -35 and -21 days, and, if pertinent, at -7 days from expected calving date and (2) no treatment (control group, n = 16). Blood samples were collected weekly from -5 to 7 weeks after calving. Heifers with progesterone concentrations in plasma above 1 ng/ml in two consecutive postpartum samples were considered as having resumed ovarian activity. A higher proportion (P = 0.04) of heifers treated with somatotropin resumed ovarian activity in the first 7 weeks post partum (73.3%; 11/15) compared with the control group (37.5%; 6/16). A higher number (P = 0.02) of heifers in the somatotropin treatment group also ovulated during the first postpartum follicular wave (53.3%; 8/15) compared with the control group (12.5%; 2/16), as indicated by the number of heifers ovulating in the first 3 weeks post partum. Pregnancy rate was not affected by treatments (P > 0.10) and averaged 40.0% (6/15) in somatotropin-treated and 25.0% (4/16) in control heifers when evaluated up to 150 days in milk. Somatotropin treatment increased the average daily milk production by 2.8 kg/cow per day (P < 0.0001) and reduced the somatic cell count (P = 0.009). Plasma IGF-I was higher (P < 0.05) for somatotropin-treated heifers in the prepartum period. Insulin and body condition score were higher (P < 0.05) and non-esterified fatty acids were lower (P < 0.05) for somatotropin-treated cows in the early postpartum period. In conclusion, somatotropin injection during the prepartum period in late-pregnant Holstein heifers was able to increase the proportion of heifers resuming ovarian activity early post partum, inspite of higher milk production.  相似文献

Intensive genetic selection for increased milk production, coupled with increased dry matter intakes has led to significant improvements in cow milk yield, however, this increase in milk output has been accompanied by a decline in cow fertility. It has been suggested that there is a higher increment of late embryonic loss in high-yielding than in moderate yielding cows or in heifers. The objectives of this study were to establish the extent and pattern of embryonic loss, from days 28 to 84 of gestation, and to examine possible relationships between cow milk yield, cow genetic merit, parity, calving to insemination interval and embryonic loss in dairy cows managed mainly under pasture-based milk production systems. Multiparous dairy cows (n=1046) located on 8 farms and nulliparous dairy heifers (n=162) located on five of these farms were used in this study. The extent and timing of embryonic loss was measured by ultrasound scanning of the cows and heifers at 14-day intervals between days 28 and 84 of gestation. Positive diagnosis of pregnancy was based on the presence of an embryo or foetus with a visible heartbeat and, at the later scans, visible movement, whose size was compatible with stage of gestation and also on the presence of clear amniotic fluid of the cows and heifers presented as presumed pregnant on day 28 after insemination, 67 and 81%, respectively had a viable embryo. The subsequent embryonic loss rate between days 28 and 84 of gestation was similar (P>0.05) for cows (7.2%) and heifers (6.1%) and the pattern of loss over this period was also similar (P>0.05) for cows and heifers. There was no significant association (P>0.05) between level of milk production or milk energy output measured to day 120 of lactation and embryonic loss rate. Similarly, there was no significant relationship (P>0.05) between % milk fat, % milk protein and % milk lactose and embryonic loss rate. The extent and pattern of embryonic loss were not related (P>0.05) to either cow or to cow sire genetic merit. There was no significant (P>0.05) relationship between the calving to first service interval and embryonic loss. The extent of embryonic loss was greater (P<0.05) in cows that lost body condition between days 28 and 56 of gestation compared with cows than either maintained or improved in body condition.  相似文献

Reproductive and biochemical parameters were studied at parturition in multiparous single-carrying Holstein cows. These were compared in animals with (n=14) and without (n=40) a retained placenta and then according to 2 prepartum diets (corn silage/concentrate, n=44; grass silage/concentrate, n=10) in cows with and without retained placentas. Cows with retained placentas had a 4-day shorter gestation period and gave birth to 5 kg-lighter calves than cows without retained placentas. Furthermore, their plasma PGFM -PgF2alpha main metabolite- (3325 vs 5675 pg/ml; P<0.01) and glucose (79.2 vs 95.2 mg/100ml; P<0.05) levels were lower and their protein concentration was higher (85.7 vs 76.5 g/l; P<0.05) than those of cows without retained placentas. Retained placenta incidence in cows fed grass-silage was higher than in cows fed corn-silage (60% vs 18.2%; P<0.05). Cows with retained placentas and fed corn silage had shorter gestation lengths, gave birth to lighter calves, and had less circulating glucose at calving (77.6 vs 96.5 mg/100ml; P<0.05) than cows without retained placentas and fed the same forage. Cows with retained placentas and fed grass silage had less PGFM (2172 vs 4530 pg/ml; P<0.05) than cows without retained placentas and fed the same forage. Calving number, sex ratio and preceeding milk yield were not different between the two groups of cows whatever their prepartum diet. In the dairy cow, retained placenta could be due to a PgF2alpha or an energy deficiency at calving. Roles of the dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids toward the Pg synthesis and of the energy supply before calving in relation to retained placenta are discussed here.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of age, body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) of maiden Holstein–Friesian heifers before mating start date (MSD) on the rate of puberty, subsequent production and longevity and their implications with regard to farm profitability. Data were available on 871 Holstein–Friesian heifers from 48 herds. BW was recorded electronically and BCS was recorded by a single operator on a scale of 1 to 5. Heifer age was calculated as the number of days from birth to the day of visit. All of the independent variables of interest were grouped into three or four categories. Three age categories (thirtiles), four BW categories (quartiles) and four BCS categories (⩽2.75, 3.00, 3.25 and ⩾3.50) were formed. Heifers with an identifiable corpus lutuem (CL) in the presence or absence of large follicles and peri-ovulatory signs and with a plasma progesterone (P4) concentration ⩾1 ng/ml were classified as pubertal. In addition, heifers without an identifiable CL in the presence or absence of large follicles and peri-ovulatory signs but with a P4 concentration ⩾1 ng/ml were also classified as pubertal. Age, BW and BCS at MSD were all found to be significantly associated with pubertal rate (P < 0.05). Age was shown to have no practical implications on subsequent cow performance. BW at MSD was favourably associated with subsequent calving date (P < 0.05), subsequent cow BW (P < 0.001) and potential (305 days) milk fat plus protein yield (P < 0.001). BCS at MSD was found to be favourably associated with milk fat plus protein yield potential (P < 0.05) and BCS (P < 0.001) during lactation. The economic analysis undertaken indicated that larger, well-grown heifers will be more profitable because of superior production potential, all else being equal. However, because of the finding of poorer reproductive efficiency in heifers grown to more than 343 kg at MSD, heifers at ∼330 kg at MSD are deemed optimal. This will correspond to mature cow BW of ∼550 kg.  相似文献

A study was designed to examine the effect of infection with Trypanosoma vivax KETRI 2501 on the maintenance of pregnancy and postpartum return to reproductive function in susceptible Galana (n = 6) and trypano-tolerant Orma Boran (n = 6) heifers during the third trimester of pregnancy. Of the 12 study animals, 3 Galana and 3 Orma Boran heifers served as controls. One of 3 Galana heifers calved prematurely with subsequent perinatal loss. Of the 2 heifers that produced live calves, 1 calf died shortly after birth, while the other survived. Two of 3 Orma heifers calved prematurely and all 3 calves died shortly after birth. The 6 control heifers produced live calves at term, all of which survived. Infection with T. vivax during the third trimester of pregnancy delayed the resumption of ovarian activity after calving, with the Ormas taking a significantly (P < 0.05) shorter time from calving to ovulation. There was no clear evidence that premature birth was associated with pathological changes in reproductive organs. Results from this study demonstrated that infection with pathogenic T. vivax during late pregnancy influenced the outcome of pregnancy in both susceptible Galana and trypano-tolerant Orma Boran heifers, resulting in premature births, perinatal loss, retained placentae, low birth weights and a prolonged period to the onset of postpartum ovarian activity.  相似文献

Induction of twinning by means of nonsurgical ipsilateral transfer of two frozen embryos or of demi-embryos was attempted in 297 virgin crossbred dairy heifers that were kept at the following locations: in stables at our breeding station (Group 1), in a mountain field (Group 2) and at a private farm (Group 3). Of these, 187 heifers (63%) were diagnosed pregnant at 25 d after embryo transfer and 134 heifers (45%) were diagnosed pregnant at 60 d after transfer by ultrasonic echography or by palpation per rectum. At calving, 118 heifers produced 46 sets of twins and 72 single calves, for a total of 164 calves sixteen pregnant heifers aborted fetuses between 2 and 7 mo. The pregnancy rate of Group 1 (39%) was lower than that of Group 2 (48%) or Group 3 (50%). Abortion and mortality rates for Group 3 (8% and 8%, respectively) were significantly lower (P<0.05) than for Group 1 (16% and 12%) or Group 2 (13% and 18%). Twin calves had lower birth weights (P<0.05) than singles, but at 270 to 330 d of age, there was no significant difference between the weights of single and twin calves. Dystocia or difficult delivery was not observed heifers producing twins. Retention of the placenta was observed in twin calving heifers, with placenta retention levels the highest in Group 2 (33%) than followed by Group 1 (14%) and Group 3 (10%). When gestation periods were compared between single and twin calves in Groups 1 and 2, the gestation period of single calves was 5.0 to 7.0 d shorter than that of twin calves. No significant difference was observed between the gestation periods of single and twin births in Group 3.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate nitric oxide (NOx) concentration in infected and non-infected mammary quarters of dairy heifers before and after calving. The relationship between bacterial species and NOx concentrations, as well as correlation between NOx concentrations and postpartum somatic cell count (SCC), was assessed. Coagulase-negative staphylococci, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were the bacteria commonly isolated during the pre- and postpartum period. Infected quarters had greater NOx concentrations than non-infected quarters before (30.81 v. 22.83 μM/ml, P < 0.05) and after (9.56 v. 5.77 μM/ml, P < 0.0001) calving. It was determined that the interaction between sampling period and infectious status had no effect on NOx concentration (P < 0.16). Infected quarters had greater SCC (log10) than healthy quarters (4.95 v. 4.39; P < 0.0001). NOx concentrations, however, did not correlate with SCC (r = 0.02). In summary, changes in NOx concentration were mainly dependent on the infectious status of the quarters with variations among the bacterial species (P < 0.05).  相似文献

Herd health and production records of 1161 Holstein-Friesian heifers from 22 Michigan dairy herds were utilized to study the effect of age at first calving upon reproductive efficiency, milk production and the incidence of disease in the first lactation. Age at first calving was not significantly related to either milk production or reproductive efficiency. Heifers displaying dystocia were significantly older at calving than those that calved without problems. Additionally, the incidence of ketosis was associated with a significantly greater age at first calving. Heifers with diarrhea and those that aborted were significantly younger at calving than their herdmates. Incidence of 12 other common dairy diseases was not related to age at first calving. It would, therefore, appear that the dairy producers we studied could inseminate their heifers at an earlier age, and thereby increase production per day of life, without suffering serious detrimental effects in lactational milk production, reproductive efficiency or overall disease incidence.  相似文献

Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-2 (IGFBP2) is a key regulator of IGF activity that has been associated with insulin resistance and obesity. In cows, IGFBP2 mRNA expression is differentially regulated according to nutritional status in different tissues including the liver, reproductive tract, and mammary gland. This study investigated associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in bovine IGFBP2 with fertility, milk production, and metabolic traits in Holstein-Friesian dairy cows. Fertility was assessed in heifers by measuring age at first service, age at first conception, and age at first calving. During the first and second lactation, the number of postpartum days for commencement of luteal activity (based on milk progesterone profiles), days to first service, days to conception, average milk production per day, 305-day milk yield, total milk yield, and total days in milk were recorded. Blood samples were taken at -1, +1, and +8 weeks relative to first and second calving for assessment of metabolic status (IGF1, insulin, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and glucose). Five novel SNPs were identified in IGFBP2, two of which had significant associations with fertility (age at conception in heifers and commencement of luteal activity) and 305-day milk yield in lactation 1. Trends of association were also observed with the peripartum metabolic status, in particular the glucose, insulin, and beta-hydroxybutyrate concentrations around second calving. These results indicate that IGFBP2 SNPs may influence tissue mobilization in dairy cows and may thus be of interest for marker assisted selection.  相似文献

A survey of blood selenium (Se) concentrations in Norwegian Red heifers and dry period cows was conducted to reveal possible association to management, feeding, health and fertility. Selenium contents were determined in 254 herd blood samples consisting of pooled samples from individual non-lactating animals from herds in 5 counties. The Se concentrations showed a normal distribution with mean 0.09 μg Se/g blood, with a standard deviation (SD) of 0.05, and ranged from 0.02 to 0.23 μg/g, with 50 % of the samples being between 0.06 and 0.11 μg/g. The herds with Se concentrations below 0.06 μg/g were smaller (21.4 ± 8.7 cow-years) than those with Se levels above 0.11 μg/g (27.5 ± 14.1 cow-years) (P < 0.01), but there were no differences in milk yield, incidence of replacement, proportion of animal culling, amount of concentrate or grass silage as percentage of energy consumption between the groups. Treatment registration records showed a tendency that more animals in the low Se herds were treated for all the diseases included in this investigation (64.8 animals per 100 cow-years) than those in the high Se herds (57.5 per 100 cow-years), while no such differences were revealed for individual disorders. There was, however, a significant difference in bulk milk somatic cell counts (BMSCC) between low and high Se herds, their values being 137 000 and 155 000 cells/ml, respectively. This difference was significantly influenced by herd size. Furthermore, a total of 4 916 lactations were analyzed from individual health and fertility recordings, including 2 934 first lactations and 1 982 later lactations. The present study revealed a reduced incidence of disease treatment with increased Se concentrations from 0.02 to 0.23 μg Se/g blood. In this regard, there seemed to be an optimum of 0.10 to 0.15 μg Se/g for all types of mastitis treatments summarized, and for treatment of retained placenta. Thus, herd Se concentrations below and above these values was connected with increased probability for sum mastitis and retained placenta, reflecting the effect of the quadratic term of Se. The cow (composite) milk somatic cell count (SCC) was lower in lactations from low Se herds than in high Se herds with a marked SCC increase in the Se concentration interval from 0.11–0.13 μg/g blood. In conclusion, heifers and dry period cows in Norway are low in blood Se content and there seems to be a positive association between increased blood Se concentration pre partum and decreased incidence of mastitis, ovarian cysts and anoestrus/silent oestrus post partum.  相似文献

Effects of continuous free-choice feeding of urea in blended rations on reproductive hormones were compared during three consecutive reproductive periods. Urea nitrogen replaced plant nitrogen as follows for Groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively: 0, 22 and 45% from insemination to mid pregnancy, 0, 8 and 16% thereafter until 2 weeks before first calving, and 0, 18 and 36% precalving and during lactations. Dietary urea was consistently associated with significantly increased progesterone in blood plasma at all periods. In contrast, estrogen was significantly lower in urine of Group 3 during Days 1 to 18 after first insemination as heifers, but not at second calving or during Days 1 to 18 after insemination for third pregnancy. Plasma estrogen was significantly lower in Group 3 than Group 1 only during the first pregnancy. Group 2 was intermediate. Length of first gestation was subnormal in Groups 1 and 2. It was concluded that dietary urea caused differences in reproductive hormones which were improtant only during the first pregnancy as heifers.  相似文献

The influence of exposure to ambient winter weather conditions (WW) during the final 90 d of gestation on serum hormones, plasma substrates, and birth weight of calves was evaluated in spring-calving, primiparous beef heifers. At of 192 +/- 14 d of gestation, heifers were assigned by expected calving date, breed, and sire of fetus to one of two treatments. Thirteen heifers were assigned to thermoneutral environment (TN; 12 degrees C) and housed in temperature-controlled rooms. Heifers in WW (n = 16) were maintained outdoors in drylots without access to shelter and given additional dietary energy when average weekly windchill fell below -6.7 degrees C. Body weights, hip-heights and samples of serum and plasma were obtained biweekly until heifers were relocated, approximately 7 d prior to expected calving. Polynomial response curves for concentrations of glucose and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) in plasma and cortisol in serum were not influenced by treatment. However, average concentrations of NEFA in plasma were increased (P < 0.02) and glucose tended to be higher (P = 0.13) in WW heifers compared to TN heifers (172.5 +/- 8.9 vs 136.9 +/- 7.7 mumol/L and 87.8 +/- 2.4 vs 83.3 +/- 2.7 mg/100ml for NEFA and glucose, respectively). Time trends of concentrations of estradiol in serum (P < 0.01) and hip-height to weight ratios were different (P < 0.05) for WW and TN. Birth weights of calves from TN heifers were greater (P < 0.06) than calves from WW heifers (42.3 +/- 2.0 vs 36.9 +/- 1.8 kg), but average calving difficulty scores were similar for both heifer groups (3.2 +/- 0.5 vs 2.7 +/- 0.4). These data suggest that exposing spring-calving cows to reduced effective ambient temperatures during the final 90 d of pregnancy may elevate energy-yielding metabolites in plasma and alter endocrine function. These changes may contribute to reduced birth weight of calves.  相似文献

Fifty non-pregnant Surti buffalo heifers aged between 17 and 42 months (n=24, <24 months;n=26, >24 months) were randomly assigned to groups subject to either natural daylight +4h supplemental light (n=25) or natural day light (n=25), to study changes in growth, serum prolactin (Prl), progesterone (P4) and luteinizing hormone (LH) to supplemental lighting. Ambient temperatures (T) and relative humidity (RH) generally were >27° C and <70% during the day-time, respectively. Light-supplemented heifers had 16.2 kg net body weight (BW) gain at 9 weeks compared to 20.8 kg for controls, but higher mean Prl after 6.5 weeks (P<0.01), and higher P4 (0.41 vs 0.19 ng/ml;P<0.06) than control heifers. Older heifers had 39.7% greater BW (P<0.01), but a net 4.3% BW gain compared to a 10.1% gain for younger heifers at 10 weeks. Older, light-supplemented heifers had higher mean P4 (0.63 vs 0.19 ng/ml;P<0.07) than the other groups. These weight and hormonal changes suggest that 4 h supplemental light can alter growth and endocrine function in buffaloes under similar planes of nutrition. While light supplementation did not have a positive effect on body wieght during the 10 week study, body weight and endocrine changes due to supplemental light may be important factors for initiation of reproductive cyclicity.  相似文献

Trichomonas cultures taken from 2389 bulls showed that approximately 4.7% of them were infected. Correlation of these data with the ranches from which diagnostic samples were obtained indicated that in the period of 1984 through 1987 26.7 to 44.1% of ranches had at least one infected bull. Thirty-four 18-month-old Holstein heifers were assigned to one of three groups, controls n = 12 animals, soluble vaccine n = 11 animals, and whole vaccine n = 11 animals to determine the effect of Tritrichomonas foetus vaccines on the reproductive performance of T . foetus infected animals. Heifers were bred with T . foetus infected bulls beginning two weeks after the second T . foetus vaccination. All immunized animals developed antibody titers of at least 1:1000 following vaccination. In addition, all control and immunized animals became infected with T . foetus . However, the duration of infection was approximately two weeks shorter in immunized animals. Approximately 42% (5 of 12) of control heifers remained infected with T . foetus for the duration of the experiment, while only 18% (2 of 11) of each of the vaccine groups remained infected for the duration of the experiment. Finally, 27% (3 of 11) of heifers in each of the vaccine groups were pregnant at slaughter, while none of the control heifers were pregnant at slaughter. Therefore, both vaccine formulations appeared to protect heifers (P<0.05) from fetal loss due to trichomoniasis.  相似文献

In an experiment with a 2x2 factorial arrangement of treatments, 32 virgin Angus heifers were used to study effects of tall fescue endophyte Acremonium coenophialum and energy supplementation on reproductive performance. Treatments were feeding of endophyte-free (EF) or endophyte-infected (EI) tall fescue without (0%) and with energy supplementation at one percent group mean body weight (1%). Blood samples were collected at 28-day intervals for prolactin (PRL). Starting 21 days before the breeding season, blood was also collected weekly for progesterone (P(4)) and PRL. After 99 days of grazing, heifers received Syncro-Mate-B (SMB) and were then artificially inseminated over a 30-day period. Heifers on EI-0% had a lower (P<0.05) average final body weight. Highest average daily gain was observed in heifers fed EF-1% (0.98 kg/day), whereas, heifers fed EI-0% had lowest average daily gain (0.53 kg/day; P<0.05). Endophyte-infected fescue depressed serum PRL concentrations (171 and 143 ng/ml vs 70 and 85 ng/ml; EF-0% and EF-1% vs EI-0% and EI-1%, respectively; P<0.05). No differences were observed among treatments in luteal activity before or after SMB, in pregnancy rates after a synchronized estrus or in overall pregnancy rates during the 30-day breeding season. Endophyte-infected fescue decreased average daily gain and depressed serum concentrations of prolactin, but had no effect on reproductive performance as measured in this study.  相似文献

BackgroundPeriparturient period induces stress in cows which fluctuates hormonal and metabolic function and causes immune suppression. Apart from impairing the health, production, and reproduction of cows, it also influences the well-being of newborn calves by decreasing the colostrum quality. Micronutrients are known for optimal health and production and their effects on parturition stress, immune response in both cow and its calf need to be explored.AimThe aim of this study was to see the effect of oral supplementation of micronutrients during the prepartum period on the health status of crossbred dairy cows and subsequently on their newborn calves.MethodsA total of 42 healthy multiparous cows were selected and randomly divided into five groups with seven cows in each group, i.e. control (Basal Diet, BD), VA group (BD + vitamin A, 105 IU), Zn group (BD + zinc sulphate, 60 ppm), VE group (BD + vitamin E, 2500 IU), and combined supplementation (CS) group (BD + combination of VA, Zn, and VE). The supplements were offered in compounded concentrate DM (100 g) to individual cows once daily before the morning feeding and the remaining portion was incorporated in the TMR. Feeding was started one month before the expected days of calving till calving. Blood samples were collected from cows at days -15, -7, -3, 0, +3, +7, and +15 relative to the day of calving. Blood samples from newborn calves and milk samples of cows were collected at days 0, +3, +7, and +15. Milk somatic cell counts (SCC) were estimated using a cell counter. Cortisol was estimated by ELISA kit in blood and milk plasma of cows and in the blood plasma of their calves. Total immunoglobulins (Ig) were estimated in milk of cows and serum of calves using zinc sulphate turbidity method. Blood neutrophils from cows and calves were studied for phagocytic activity (PA) using nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) assay.Data were analysed by repeated-measures two-way ANOVA using the mixed procedure of SAS, and the pairwise comparison was performed using a multiple comparison test (Tukey).ResultsCombined supplementation of micronutrients decreased (P < 0.05) maternal blood plasma (control vs. CS group, 5.98 ± 0.20 vs. 3.86 ± 0.23 ng/mL) and milk plasma (3.96 ± 0.13 vs. 2.71 ± 0.10 ng/mL) cortisol, milk SCC (3.05 ± 0.11 vs. 2.12 ± 0.10 × 105 cells/mL) and increased (P < 0.05) total milk Ig concentration (18.80 ± 0.11 vs. 23.04 ± 0.57 mg/mL) and the PA of blood neutrophils (0.84 ± 0.03 vs. 1.07 ± 0.03). Similarly, lower blood cortisol concentration (9.69 ± 0.35 vs. 6.02 ± 0.18 ng/mL) and higher (P < 0.05) total Ig (23.26 ± 0.11 vs. 30.34 ± 0.70 mg/mL) and PA of blood neutrophils (0.37 ± 0.02 vs. 0.52 ± 0.02) were observed in the calves born to CS group of cows as compared to the control. Highest (P < 0.05) positive effects (lower stress levels and higher immune response) of treatment were noticed in CS group followed by VE group and then Zn group. However, VA group didn’t differ from the control group.ConclusionOur results indicate that micronutrient interventions during the prepartum period can improve the health status of dairy calves and subsequently the well-being of their calves.  相似文献
