Experiments were conducted to identify environmental factors that influence the survival of rainbow smelt Osmerus mordax during their early life stages. Developing rainbow smelt embryos and yolk-sac larvae were cultured under controlled conditions with different dissolved oxygen (DO; 1·09, 2·18, 4·37 and 6·55 mg l−1, pH (4·0, 4·5, 5·0, 5·5, 6·0 and 7·0), nitrate ( 0·7, 3·6, 7·3, 14·6 and 29·2 mg l−1), phosphate (0·04, 0·21, 0·42, 2·08 and 4·17 mg l−1) and salinity (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30) levels. Rainbow smelt embryos were also incubated with simulated tidal salinity fluctuations (2–28), ultraviolet radiation (irradiances of 2·8, 6·2 and 5·1 W m−2) and under natural conditions in two rainbow smelt spawning rivers. In the laboratory, hatch was only impaired under the lowest DO and pH conditions (0 and 13% hatch, respectively) and at highest constant salinity levels (0% hatch). Larval survival was only affected by pH levels ≤5·0. The experiment that compared hatch under natural conditions was terminated when embryos became covered with silt and fungus. These results suggest that water acidification, sediment and fungal growth may affect rainbow smelt survival during their early life stages.  相似文献

Daily ration of juvenile Japanese Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius (32·1–33·1 mm standard length, L S) was estimated at three temperatures (18·6, 19·5 and 21·2° C) in the laboratory. Gastric evacuation rate ranged between 0·398 (18·6° C) and 0·431 (21·2° C). Diel change in instantaneous consumption rate indicated that juvenile Japanese Spanish mackerel are daylight feeders. The estimated values of the daily ration ranged between 66·1%(18·6° C) and 82·6%(21·2° C) of body mass. These per cent values of daily ration were converted to daily consumption in mg (28 mg at 18·6° C to 34 mg at 21·2° C) using the mean dry body mass of juvenile Japanese Spanish mackerel of 30 mm (42·1 mg). Stomach content analysis of wild specimens collected in the Seto Inland Sea, south‐western Japan, revealed that the majority of wild Japanese Spanish mackerel larvae and juveniles ingested fish larvae with a body size >50% of the predator L S. Based on the predator‐prey size relationship, the daily consumption of a Japanese Spanish mackerel juvenile of 30 mm was equivalent to 5·1 (18·6° C) to 6·4 (21·2° C) Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus larvae which was the dominant prey organism in stomachs of the wild Japanese Spanish mackerel.  相似文献

Haematology and leucocyte morphology of wild caught Thunnus maccoyii   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The haematology of wild southern bluefin tuna Thunnus maccoyii was described using blood samples collected from fish immediately after they were caught. Cytology and cytochemistry revealed that the blood in peripheral circulation is comprised of erythrocytes, reticulocytes, ghost cells, lymphocytes, thrombocytes, eosinophilic granulocytes, neutrophilic granulocytes and monocytes. Reference ranges established were 41·09–55·50% for haematocrit, 0·62–3·00% for leucocrit, 13·25–17·92 g dl−1 for haemoglobin and 2·1–2·9 million erythrocytes μl−1 for erythrocyte count. Differential cell counts showed 94·58 ± 2·15% erythrocytes, 3·99 ± 1·44% leucocytes and 1·43 ± 1·03% thrombocytes (mean ±  s . d .). Normal ranges for differential leucocyte counts were 0·00–5·45% for neutrophils, 0·69–12·06% for eosinophils, 0·00–5·03% for monocytes, 46·97–74·32% for lymphocytes and 14·47–43·92% for thrombocytes. Erythrocyte indices, leucocyte types and cytochemistry were comparable to other species of scombrids. Packed cell volume was sensitive to the physiological state of the fish and to sample handling technique.  相似文献

The Sr/Ca ratios in otoliths of silver Japanese eels Anguilla japonica , in Pearl River, China, indicated that both sexes did not stay in brackish water and grew in fresh water from the glass eel stage until spawning migration. This did not support the hypothesis that females tended to distribute upstream and males might be restricted to estuaries. The back-calculated total length of males at glass eel stage was not significantly different from that of females, indicating that the hypothesis that small glass eels became males and larger ones became females may not be true. The mean (±S.D.) age and total length of males at migration were 6·4±1·6 years and 48·3±4·5 cm, which were significantly smaller than for females, 8·3±1·6 years and 61·4±4·1 cm. The age of migration was related inversely to growth rate for both sexes. Growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation were K =0·21 cm year°1, L =55·7 cm and t o=-0·55 year for males and K =0·14 cm year−1, L =77·5 cm and t o=-0·60 year for females. The difference in asymptotic length ( L ) between males and females may be because females postpone migration to achieve larger size for maximizing reproductive success.  相似文献

Territorial three-spined sticklebacks moved 5·3 times as far as non-territorial males in 2 min ( P < 0·001) and spent 11·1 times longer in aggression in the pools ( P < 0·001). Territorial males had slightly higher condition factors than non-territorial males. Condition factor was correlated positively with the gonad mass ( P < 0·006), carotenoid concentration ( P < 0·006) and the activity of CS in the axial muscle ( P < 0·05) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in pectoral muscle ( P < 0·003). The male traits best correlated positively with female mate choice were courtship effort ( P < 0·001), coloration ( P < 0·003) and initial condition ( P < 0·025). Courtship behaviour was related to intestine mass ( P < 0·018), axial ( P < 0·028) and pectoral muscle citrate synthase (CS) activity ( P < 0·047); coloration was related to gonad mass ( P < 0·037). These muscle enzymes may be involved in ATP generation for sustained activities or in recuperation between bouts of burst activity. Females that choose to mate with assiduously courting males which bear higher CS levels may be choosing individuals that show honestly their good condition and capacity to accomplish reproductive tasks.  相似文献

The mean total length ( L T), mass and age of ready to migrate female silver shortfin eels Anguilla australis from the Hopkins River estuary and the mouth of the Merri River in south-eastern Australia, were 83·2 ± 1·2 cm, 1051 ± 51 g, and 17·2 ± 1·79 years, respectively. The eye index ( I E) of the silver shortfin eels was < 5·2 (mean 7·64 ± 0·29) and differed significantly from that of the yellow shortfin eels collected from two other sites. The I E increased with L T (mm) and was related by log I E= 2·656 log L T6·925. The per cent moisture, protein and ash content of the liver of silver shortfin eels was significantly lower than in yellow shortfin eels, but lipid content was significantly higher in the former (35·5 ± 2·0%). The mean mass μg mg lipid ) of saturates (230·4 ± 2·6 v . 181·7 ±2·6), monoenes (367·4 ± 6·3 v . 290·8 ± 8·9) and PUFA (177·3 ± 5·3 v . 159·7 ± 4·6) in muscle was significantly higher, and the great majority of individual fatty acids was found also in higher quantities in silver shortfin eels. In the liver, the PUFA found in the highest quantity was 22:6n-3, except in shortfin eels from Hopkins River estuary, and the amount of 18:2n-6 in the liver of silver shortfin eels was significantly higher than that in yellow shortfin eels but the reverse was true of 20:4n-6. In both muscle and liver tissues the saturate 16:0 and the monoene 18:ln-9 collectively accounted for >50% of all the fatty acids in the lipid.  相似文献

Image analysis of sagittal sections of gill lamellae of diploid and triploid tench Tinca tinca revealed the blood and water diffusion distance in diploids (2·07 μm) to be significantly higher than that of their triploid siblings (1·46 μm; P < 0·01). Lamellae of diploids compared to triploids were found to be significantly shorter (105·84 v. 132·11 μm) and thicker (18·47 v. 14·21 μm; all at P < 0·05) than those of their triploid siblings but with similar mean sectional areas (1965·44 v. 1910·86 μm2).  相似文献

A medium density microsatellite map of BTA10: reassignment of INRA69   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We have developed a genetic map of BTA10 based on 8952 informative meioses for 13 microsatellite markers and the erythrocyte antigen Z. With the exception of OarAE64 , the support for the order of all loci in the map exceeded a LOD > 3·0. The length of the BTA10 genetic map was 87·0 centimorgans (cM). The 14-marker, sex-average map in Kosambi cM was: CSSM38 –8·9- BM1237 –5·2- HH8A –2·6- INRA69 –10·6- TGLA378 –0·8- BM6305 –17·2- TGLA102 –17·9- INRA96 –0·3- CSRM60 –9·2- DIK20 –3·0- EAZ –6·7- CSSM46 –3·7- SRCRSP3 –1·0- OarAE64 with an average interval of 6·70 cM. The microsatellite INRA69 was recently assigned to the pseudoautosomal region of the bovine X chromosome by linkage analysis. However, we found that twopoint support for linkage between INRA69 and 15 X-linked bovine microsatellites was LOD < 0·50 in 529 reciprocal backcross and F2 fullsib progeny. We performed twopoint analyses of INRA69 against 275 markers distributed throughout the bovine genome and found significant associations with a LOD > 3·0 only between INRA69 and eight BTA10 microsatellite loci. Consequently, we excluded INRA69 from the genetic map of the X chromosome and reassign this microsatellite to BTA10.  相似文献

The compensatory growth of juvenile brown flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (body mass c. 12 g) following different thermal exposure was investigated. Fish were exposed to one of the five temperatures: 8·5 ( T 8·5), 13·0 ( T 13·0), 17·5 ( T 17·5), 22·0 ( T 22·0) and 26·5° C ( T 26·5) for 10 days and fish grew best at 22·0° C. Then the water temperature in all treatments was equably adjusted to 22·0° C over 3 days. At the end of the following 30 days after temperature adjustment, there were no significant differences between body masses of fish in the different treatments (wet body mass at the end of the experiment ranged from 22·13 to 24·56 g). Results indicated that the juvenile P. olivaceus achieved complete compensatory growth. Analysis of the dynamics of the feeding rates and feed conversion efficiencies indicated that compensatory growth of the fish experienced low temperature ( T 8·5, T 13·5 and T 17·5) or high temperature ( T 26·5) exposure was mainly dependent on increasing feed intake (hyperphagia) and possibly by improvement in feed conversion efficiency. The moisture content was not affected by different temperature exposure significantly. The lipid and energy content of juvenile P. olivaceus in T 8·5, however, were significantly lower than other treatment. Results of the current study indicate that a short period of low or high temperature exposure may not affect annual growth, but may affect lipid and energy deposition.  相似文献

Ontogenetic changes in temperature preference of Atlantic cod   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Final thermal preferendum ( T ) experiments were conducted in a horizontal thermal gradient tank from the beginning of August 2001 to mid‐November 2001 using Atlantic cod Gadus morhua from 6·5 to 79·0 cm fork length ( L F). The value of T varied significantly ( P  < 0·005) with L F( T  = 7·23–0·054 L F), with smaller (younger) fish choosing higher temperatures than larger (older) fish. The preferendum varied from 6·9° C for fish of 6·5 cm to 3·0° C for those of 79·0 cm. Experiments comparing fish positions in the gradient tank between thermal gradients of 0·5–11·0 and 4·5–14·5° C demonstrated that fish positions were determined by temperature selection instead of undesirable tank effects. This study is the first to demonstrate the effect of ontogeny on temperature preferences of a marine fish species.  相似文献

Survival, recoverability and sublethal injury of two strains of Listeria monocytogenes , Scott A and an environmental strain KM, on exposure to sea water at 12·8 or 20·8 °C was determined using in situ diffusion chambers. Plate counts were used to assess recoverability and injury while 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride (CTC) reduction was used to determine respiratory activity. T90 values (times for 10-fold decreases in numbers of recoverable cells) on non-selective medium (trypticase soya agar with 0·6% yeast extract) at 12·8 and 20·8 °C were 61·7 and 69·2 h for L. monocytogenes Scott A, and 103·0 and 67·0 h for L. monocytogenes KM, respectively. On selective medium (Oxford agar), T90 values at 12·8 and 20·8 °C were 60·6 and 56·9 h for L. monocytogenes Scott A, and 83·0 and 65·9 h for L. monocytogenes KM, respectively. With Scott A, the percentage of sublethally injured cells at 12·8 and 20·8 °C was 1·7 and 17·7%, respectively, while for KM the values were 19·0 and 1·6%, respectively. The fraction of cells reducing CTC but which were not recoverable on plating progressively increased on exposure to sea water. Listeria monocytogenes KM challenged at 58 °C showed an apparent increase in heat resistance after exposure to sea water at 20·8 °C for 7 d ( D 58= 2·64 min) compared with before exposure ( D 58= 1·24). This increase in thermal resistance was not apparent at temperatures greater than 63 °C, and analysis of the best-fit regression lines fitted to the thermal data obtained from the two cell populations indicated that their thermal resistance was not significantly different ( P > 0·05) over the temperature range tested (58–62 °C).  相似文献

The present study tested the hypothesis that Allothunnus fallai can elevate its slow-oxidative red myotomal muscle (RM) temperature. Measurements on 30 A. fallai (750–850 mm fork length) captured by hook and line off the coast of southern New Zealand revealed that RM temperatures are elevated by mean ± s . d . 8·1 ± 1·3° C (range 6·7–10·0° C) above the mean ± s . d . ambient sea surface temperature 15·3 ± 0·8° C (range 14·3 to 16·4° C). These data provide evidence that the vascular modifications to the central circulation of A. fallai act as a counter-current heat exchanger and that RM heat conservation is a character state present in all extant tuna species.  相似文献

Juvenile big bellied seahorse Hippocampus abdominalis were exposed acutely and chronically to elevated ammonia and nitrite {24 h exposure: 0·01, 5·0, 10·1, 14·8 and 19·9 mg l−1 total ammonia-nitrogen [TA-N] and <0·001, 74·4, 99·2 and 123·6 mg l−1 [NO2-N] nitrite-nitrogen and 35 days exposure: 0·11, 0·55, 1·67 and 3·07 mg l−1 TAN and <0·001, 0·92, 4·67 and 9·10 mg NO2-N l−1}. Significant ( P <0·001) increases in oxygen consumption rate and ventilation frequency occurred at 14·8, 19·9 mg l−1 TA-N and 99·2, 123·6 mg l−1 NO2-N for acutely exposed fish. Oxygen consumption rate was significantly ( P <0·05) elevated at 1·67 and 3·07 mg l−1 TA-N in chronically treated fish and ventilation frequency increased significantly ( P <0·05) at 0·55, 1·67, 3·07 mg l−1 TA-N and 4·59, 9·10 mg l−1 NO2-N. There were no significant differences in growth between controls and ammonia exposed fish. Mortalities occurred at 14·8, 19·9 mg l−1 TA-N.  相似文献

Spawning of the Hawaiian coral-reef goby Asterropteryx semipunctata was diurnal, occurring at various times throughout the day. Mean length of eggs deposited in nests was 0·76 mm (range 0·67–0·84); mean egg width was 0·47 mm (range 0·41–0·52). Clutch size varied from 296 to 1552 eggs (mean=886±309), and was independent of standard length, total body weight, and body condition. Mean relative clutch size was 1·59 eggs mg-1 total body weight (range 0·84–2·43). Clutches hatched 4–5 nights after being deposited in a nest. Mean notochord length of newly-hatched larvae was 1·88 mm (range 1·60–2·04). The minimum period of time that elapsed between egg deposition and subsequent growth of a new batch of oocytes to spawning size was 5–6 days, providing a reasonable estimate of minimum spawning interval. Compared with other gobiids, tropical species tend to have shorter incubation periods, smaller eggs and smaller larvae at hatching.  相似文献

This study aimed to measure protein synthesis using a stable isotope method, investigate protein-nitrogen flux in a flatfish Pleuronectes flesus , and use the data to test the hypothesis that individual differences in growth efficiency were related to individual differences in protein-nitrogen flux mediated through differences in protein synthesis and degradation. Three measurements of protein-nitrogen flux via consumption, protein synthesis and nitrogenous excretion were made for individual flounder during a 212-day period and fractional rates of protein-nitrogen flux were scaled for a 50–g flounder to provide mean values for protein consumption (2·11 ± 0·21% day−1), protein synthesis (2·08±0·23% day−1), protein growth (0·71±0·06% day−1) and protein degradation (1·37±0·24% day−1). Mean rates of nitrogenous excretion were 0·142 mg N g−1 day−1 and 0·047 mg N g−1 day−1 for ammonia and urea, respectively. Individual flounder had different protein growth efficiencies and this was correlated negatively and significantly with mean rates of protein synthesis ( r - 0·70; P <0·05) and degradation ( r - 0·67; P < 0·05) and correlated positively and significantly with the efficiency of retaining synthesized protein ( r +0·63, P <0·05). This supported the proposed hypothesis that flounder which grow more efficiently achieve this through adopting a low protein turnover strategy.  相似文献

The effect of incubation temperature (8·6, 11·1, 13·2, 15·1 and 16·8° C) on north-east Atlantic mackerel Scomber scombrus development, growth and age at starvation during the yolk-sac larval period was investigated. Standard length at hatch was found to be inversely proportional to incubation temperatures within the natural thermal ranges of this species; it ranged from 3·76 mm at 11·1° C to 3·30 mm at 17·8° C. Following hatch, however, larval growth rate was positively related to temperature. Individual logistic models, as a function of temperature and age, were fitted to the development processes of gape, eye pigmentation, jaw mobility and yolk exhaustion. Thereafter, development was classified into different ordered stages and an extended continuation model was fitted to the multinomial ordered stage classification. In all cases, there was a difference of >23 h between the first and the last individual developing in certain stage. The probability of survival decreased with age and was inversely related to temperature. Yolk utilization varied from 4·5 to 8·6 days and individuals died between 7·9 and 12·2 days from 17·8 to 11·1° C. The study demonstrated the significant impact that temperature has on development, growth and survival rates, during the early life history.  相似文献

The insulin activity of the pancreatic tissues of free-swimming and aestivated African lungfish, P. annectens (Owen), was bioassayed against standard insulin in rabbits. The hepatic glycogen content and plasma glucose concentration in free-swimming and aestivated lungfish were also estimated. The liver glycogen content was 64·47 ± 6·32 and 7·19 ± 2·68 mgg−1 net wt and the plasma glucose concentration was 37·62 ± 4·22 and 6·39 ± 1·29% in free-swimming and aestivated lungfish, respectively.
Extracts of pancreatic tissue of the lungfish produced a dose-dependent decrease in the plasma glucose concentration in rabbits. The magnitude of the decrease in plasma glucose concentration produced by extracts from aestivated specimens was significantly smaller (about 26%) compared to that produced by pancreatic extracts from free-swimming active lungfish (about 37%). The insulin activity of the pancreatic tissue was 0·82 ± 0·02 and 1·27 ± 0·25 iu mg−1 dry pancreatic tissue weight in aestivated and free-swimming lungfish, respectively.  相似文献

Rates of maximum food consumption and growth were determined for immature mandarin fish Siniperca chuatsi (47·2—540·2 g) and Chinese snakehead Channa argus (45·0—546·2 g) at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35) C. The relationship between maximum rate of food consumption ( C max), body weight ( W ) and temperature ( T ) was described by the multiple regression equations: In C max=−4·880+0·597 In W +0·284 T −0·0048 T 2 for the mandarin fish, and In C max=−6·718+ 0·522 In W +0·440 T −0·0077 T 2 for the Chinese snakehead. The optimum temperature for consumption was 29·6) C for the mandarin fish and 28·6) C for the Chinese snakehead. The relationship between growth rate ( G ), body weight and temperature was ln( G +0·25)=−0·439−0·500 ln W +0·270 T −0·0046 T 2 for the mandarin fish, and ln( G +0·25)=−6·150+ (0·175−0·026 T ) ln W +0·571 T −0·0078 T 2 for the Chinese snakehead. The weight exponent in the growth–weight relationship was −0·83 for the mandarin fish, but decreased with increasing temperature for the Chinese snakehead. The optimum temperature for growth was 29·3) C for the mandarin fish, but tended to decrease with increasing weight for the Chinese snakehead, being 30·3) C for a 45-g fish, and 26·1°C for a 550-g fish.  相似文献
