Adult and juvenile common marmosets were introduced to unfamiliar conspecifics individually and in whole groups. In introductions using animals of the same sex, adults were mutually hostile unless they were related or socially familiar; juveniles behaved submissively to adults and little aggression was observed between juveniles. In introductions using animals of the opposite sex, males of all ages solicited females but females did not reciprocate. When whole groups were introduced, in two experiments most of the elder group members behaved aggressively and younger animals did not interact frequently; but in a third experiment, in which the adult males were related, little aggression was observed and younger animals behaved amicably. It is argued that the behavioral reactions shown by individual marmosets are related to territorial hostility and that the behavior of juveniles to adults may aid assimilation of younger animals into new groups.  相似文献

Three wild groups of common marmoset, Callithrix jacchus jacchus,in north-east Brazil, of approximately similar size, had home ranges between 2.5 and 6.5 ha. But their core areas were similar in size between 1.0 and 1.5 ha, with a monthly area of heavy use between 1.1 and 1.6 ha. The groups were selective in the use of their home ranges, even though they were small: they used some areas heavily and others lightly. The core areas had higher densities of trees that produced gum exudates than did other parts of the home ranges. Our data suggest that a group of marmosets in this habitat may require a minimum of about 50 gum trees in its home range at a minimum density of about 50 trees/ha. In addition, the animals require suitable trees in which to sleep. We suggest that patches of forest with these desirable properties remain relatively fixed in size and location over the years and that individual animals are constantly in flux between them.  相似文献

The breeding records from 22Callithrix jacchus jacchus females aged 13–23 months were examined. It was evident that females aged more than 18 months when first paired bred sooner, as did females paired with sexually experienced males. A detailed behavioral investigation of nine newly formed pairs was carried out for 10 weeks. Males showed more following, sniffing, tail-raised presents, and affectional behavior than their mates, while females showed more soliciting. Only females gave the submissive vocalization (ngÄ). This shows that there is a degree of sexual dimorphism in the behavior of this monogamous monkey. Four of the nine pairs failed to conceive within 12 weeks of pairing;the females of these pairs behaved more submissively than successful breeders, showing more ngÄ and less bristling and sexual behavior. In all cases the four females were housed in close proximity to dominant relatives and this was considered to be a significant factor.  相似文献

Infant-carrying behavior in four families ofCallithrix jacchus was investigated over a period covering six to eight litters. We evaluated the effect of the total number of helpers and the number of adult helpers on the parents' carrying performance for the total carrying period and for three age stages of the infants. The carrying performance of the parents reached an asymptote beginning with litters 3 to 5. In two groups, the carrying performance of the parents was significantly negatively correlated with group size. However, considerable differences existed within each group and between the groups. The mother was the primary caregiver in the early weeks of the infants' lives. In this phase the helpers' contribution to carrying was less than might be expected. The relief of the parents from infant-carrying was greatest when the infants were 4 to 7 weeks old. Breeding males benefited most and from every helper, while breeding females benefited most from adult helpers, i.e., the carrying performance of the breeding female was considerably reduced until the respective group had grown to 8 to 10 members (infants not included). This group size is considered to be ideal for maximal relief of the parents from infant carrying. An increasing number of adult nonreproductive helpers (>4 or 5) does not induce a further reduction of the parents' carrying performance. Infant-rearing experience of nonreproductive helpers seems to be more important for the parents' and, especially, the breeding female's relief from infant-carrying than the overall number of helpers is. The data also strongly evidence that a group member's participation in infant-carrying is influenced by housing conditions and the demographic history of the group.  相似文献

Data were obtained both from observation and by radiolocation on the size and use of the home range of the common marmoset, Callithrix jacchus jacchus.Ranges were small compared to those of other callitrichids, varying between 0.72 to 1.62 ha, and a high proportion of the home range was used each day. The marmosets showed territorial behavior, defending an area almost equivalent to the home range. Despite this, mating between animals belonging to neighboring groups was seen. Correlations between the use of the home range and some environmental variables showed little consistency between two groups which occupied ranges of differing resource density, and their activity patterns, as measured by movement through their ranges, were also different. Possible reasons for these inconsistencies are discussed.  相似文献

This study describes the concentrations of melatonin in plasma samples taken from marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) every 4 h over three 24-h periods. A circadian pattern of secretion was apparent, with higher levels recorded at night (20.00–08.00 h) than during the day (08.00–20.00 h) and a peak concentration at 20.00 h. There was a significant difference in the mean day and night concentrations (32.5 ± 4.5 pg/ml versus 49.0 ± 6.9 pg/ml, respectively) with individual concentrations ranging between<10–60 pg/ml in the day and 15–200 pg/ml at night. Circadian plasma melatonin concentrations were similar over the three 24-h periods, in male (n = 3) and female (n = 3) monkeys, and in dominant (cyclic, n = 5) and subordinate (acyclic, n = 4) females. The results show a less pronounced circadian profile in the marmoset than is seen in the human but a similar profile to that in the seasonally breeding rhesus monkey.  相似文献

While intercommunity interactions are well documented in wild chimpanzees, the influence of neighboring captive groups on social behavior has not been investigated. This study examined the influence of vocalizations and noisy displays produced in neighboring groups (i.e., “neighbor vocalization”) on intragroup hooting, bluff displays, and agonistic behavior. Chimpanzees from two broadly differing housing conditions were selected in order to examine the effect of neighboring groups: “Wing Groups” (those living in indoor/outdoor pens with auditory access to large number of neighboring individuals) and “Building Groups” (those housed in one indoor building, able to hear the calls and noisy displays produced by a small number of neighboring individuals occupying the building). Data were collected on 58 adult and juvenile subjects living in social groups varying in size from two to 14 individuals. Observation sessions were divided into two categories depending on the level of neighbor vocalization. Wing Groups showed higher rates of hooting, bluff displays, and agonistic behavior against other group members when levels of neighbor vocalization were high. Building Groups showed the same pattern, with results for bluff displays reaching statistical significance. This effect was also found through an analysis of the time periods immediately surrounding incidents of neighbor vocalization: Hooting and bluff displays were significantly more common after than before neighbor vocalizations. In spite of variation between the two housing conditions with respect to overall levels of neighbor vocalization, degree of differences between the high and low vocalization levels, and methods of data collection, a consistent neighbor effect was detected. This effect is congruous with behavioral patterns observed in the wild, and is therefore considered an expression of species-typical behavior as opposed to an artifact of captivity. These results are relevant to captive management, and bear on the influence of housing condition on psychological well-being. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In this paper, the occurrence of an external genital abnormality in female marmoset monkeys (fused labia) is discussed. This malformation was detected, for the first time, in a group of animals at the German Primate Center (GPC), Goettingen. The malformed vulva was completely sealed except for an opening of 1.5-2.5 mm around the urethra sufficient for urination. Because of this defect the animals were not able to copulate. As a consequence, the affected females were functionally infertile although they had a normal genital tract and a regular cycle. This vulvar abnormality was found in 12 females, offspring of 10 pairs in which either one or both came to the German Primate Center from two genetically related colonies in Munich, Germany, and one colony in Basel, Switzerland. The abnormality appeared to be recessive and inheritable from either parent. In pairs in which both animals were from one of the mentioned colonies, 45% of the female offspring were affected. In pairs where only one partner came from these colonies, 26% of female offspring had the malformation. These results indicate that avoidance of inbreeding, which is frequently performed in primate colonies, may reduce, but not eliminate the expression of abnormalities of genetic origin. Therefore selective breeding is required, and, in colonies where these recessive mutations are widespread, the development of genetic screening tests would be advantageous.  相似文献

Though sexual maturation may begin at around one year of age, first successful reproduction of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is likely to be later, and it is generally recommended that animals not be mated before 1.5 years of age. The average gestation period is estimated to be 143 to 144 days. A crown-rump length measurement taken by use of ultrasonography during the linear, rapid, prenatal growth phase (between approx. days 60 and 95) can be compared against standard growth curves to estimate delivery date to within 3 to 4 days, on average. Marmosets produce more young per delivery than does any other anthropoid primate, and have more variation in litter size. Many long-established colonies report that triplets are the most common litter size, and there is documented association between higher maternal body weight and higher ovulation numbers. Higher litter sizes generally do not generate higher numbers of viable young. Marmosets are unusual among primates in having a postpartum ovulation that typically results in conception and successful delivery; reported median inter-birth intervals range from 154 to 162 days. However, pregnancy losses are quite common; one study of a large breeding colony indicated 50 percent loss between conception and term delivery. The average life span for breeding females is around six years; the range of reported average lifetime number of litters for a breeding pair is 3.45 to 4.0. Our purpose is to provide an overview of reproduction in the common marmoset, including basic reproductive life history, lactation and weaning, social housing requirements, and common problems encountered in the captive breeding of this species. A brief comparison between marmoset and tamarin reproduction also will be provided.  相似文献

In a colony of captive marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus), the survival rate of infants up to the age of 90 days after birth was analyzed with special reference to the number of members in the group. The number of group members (newborns excluded) varied between two (parents only) and 18 (parents plus non-reproductive helpers); the number of adult group members varied between two and 15. Five hundred ninety-two live-born, parent-reared infants of 263 litters from 56 breeding females were included in the analysis. The greatest reproductive success was observed in groups of ten to 11 members or four to five adults, including the parents. However, the survival rate was fairly constant over group size at approximately 80% of an expected maximum value and no significant correlation was observed between the total number of group members and infant survival rate, or between the number of adult members and infant survival. While helpers may be necessary to increase the survival rate of infants in wild groups, help of non-reproductive animals is not required in captivity, where energetic demands are comparatively low and ecological constraints absent. Under laboratory conditions the parents' skill in infant handling and the mother's physical condition, i.e., the ability to provide enough milk for the infants, is likely to be the most important factor for infant survival. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

We present observations on the breeding patterns in a free-ranging population of common marmosets, Callithrix jacchusWe found evidence of the simultaneous presence of two reproductively active females in all three monitored groups. We recorded at least one full reproductive cycle (conception-birth) for two females in each group, but other adult females did not breed. An overview of data from other callitrichid field studies indicates that the observed pattern may be an additional characteristic of the flexibility of the social organization of common marmosets. Comparisons with data from other sites where callithrixhas been studied indicate that the presence of a second breeding female in a group may be related to high population density, though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.  相似文献

Five groups ofCallithrix jacchus jacchus were studied in the field in north east Brazil. Group size and composition were similar to that described for other callitrichids, but changes in group membership occurred much more frequently than previously reported. There was a 50% turnover in group membership in a six month period, and adult males changed groups particularly often. Most groups contained only one reproductively active female, but there was evidence that one group contained two females that were reproductively active simultaneously. Some groups had several adult females, and the role of reproductive female switched from one individual to another with time. Individual marmosets are faced with an unusually wide range of alternative life history strategies involving different combinations of location and reproductive condition. We argue that marmoset social organization is best studied at the level of the whole population within an area, rather than at the level of the individual group.  相似文献

The incidence of ovulation and subsequent pregnancy in post partum marmosets were studied. By two weeks following delivery, all the animals (N=10) had ovulated as determined by a gradual rise in plasma estradiol followed by a rise in plasma progesterone (p>31.8 nmol/l) levels. The mean day of ovulation was 11.3±1.5 (9–14 days). Eighty percent of these females became pregnant as indicated by a continued rise in plasma progesterone levels (p>127 nmol/l) and as confirmed by transabdominal uterine palpation. These results suggest that the day of delivery could serve as a useful parameter to monitor ovulation and pregnancy in this non-menstruating primate species.  相似文献

Considerable recent interest has focused on the possibility that behavioral factors may influence immune competence, and hence, potentially, patterns of disease. We report here the relationship between the aggressive and affiliative behavior and the cellular immune responses of 30 adult male cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) living in small (n = 5) social groups whose members were periodically redistributed over 26 months. Animals also were subjected to behavioral observation, allowing them to be categorized as either high or low in aggressiveness and affiliation. At the end of the 26 months, lymphocyte proliferation tests were performed on blood samples from all monkeys, using both concanavalin A (ConA) and phytohemagglutinin (PHA) in concentrations of 1, 5, and 10 ug/ml. Two-by-two (Aggressiveness [high, low] X Affiliation [high, low]) analyses of variance performed on these data showed lymphocyte proliferation in response to both ConA and PHA to be greatest (at 1 ug/ml) among highly affiliative animals, albeit only if they were also low in aggressiveness (ConA: Affiliation x Aggression, P < 0.02; PHA: Affiliation x Aggression, P < 0.03). An additional finding was that natural killer cell activity (at an effector to target ratio of 100:1) was highest among highly affiliative animals, regardless of their aggressiveness (P < 0.05). These results indicate that immune competence may be enhanced among monkeys which, in response to a disrupted social environment, spend large amounts of time in affiliation with other animals. Social status, a phenomenon known to influence many aspects of nonhuman primate physiology, was unassociated with nonspecific lymphocyte blastogenesis or natural killer cell activity in this experiment.  相似文献

Aggressive behavior can be studied as either offensive or defensive responses to a stimulus. The studies discussed in this review are focused on the peripubertal development of offensive aggression in male golden hamsters and its responsiveness to repeated social stress. Quantitative and qualitative changes in offensive responses were analyzed during this period. Quantitative changes in offensive responses were observed as decreased frequency of attacks. Qualitative changes were observed as changes in attack types, as animals reorient their attacks gradually from the face to the lower belly and rump. These developmental changes were altered by repeated exposure to social stress during early puberty. Daily exposure to aggressive adults during early puberty accelerated the qualitative development of offensive responses and the onset of adult-like offensive responses. In contrast, social stress had little effect on the quantitative changes associated with early puberty. However, social stress was associated with higher attack frequency during adulthood. These effects of stress during early puberty contrast with those observed with animals in late puberty. At that time, repeated exposure to aggressive adults inhibits offensive aggression. These data constitute the basis for a new theory on the development of agonistic behavior that includes the following hypotheses. First, it is hypothesized that mid-puberty is marked by a change in responsiveness to repeated social stress. As such, differences in stress responsiveness from social interactions are interpreted as a basic distinction between play fighting and adult aggression. Second, it is also hypothesized that a common neural circuitry mediates the activation of offensive responses during play fighting and adult aggressive interactions.  相似文献

Two systems are described for the collection of 24 h urine samples from the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). Using 84 adult animals, 1210 24-h samples were collected. Mean urinary excretion was 14.4 +/- 7.5 ml/24 h (n = 1210, mean +/- SD). No differences were observed between sexes (for 52 females, 24 h volume = 15.1 +/- 8.0 ml; for 32 males, 24 h volume = 12.5 +/- 6.0 ml). No significant differences were observed between pregnant and non-pregnant females with respect to 24 h urine volume, and bilateral gonadectomy did not influence subsequent urinary excretion in either sex. For 161 pairs of observations, the intake of drinking water (11.7 +/- 10.2 ml/24 h) and the volume of urine excreted (12.6 +/- 7.1 ml/24 h) showed a positive correlation (r = 0.406 d.f. 159, P less than 0.001: y = 0.558x + 4.247).  相似文献

We investigated a new method of urine collection in the common marmoset. We entered the cage as soon as the light cycle started in the breeding room and collected urine from the animal directly without any restraint. We were able to take separate samples from completely different individuals housed together for behavioral studies in the same cage. Urine and blood samples were taken from individuals from late pregnancy through postpartum nursing period. Cortisol and prolactin concentrations measured in urine were compared to those measured in blood to evaluate this collection method. LH/CG level in the urine samples was also measured. Urine data in females indicated a tendency toward high cortisol values during late pregnancy, a sharp drop before parturition, and increase after delivery. In females cortisol levels measured in blood closely resembled concentrations measured in urine. Urine cortisol in males clearly indicated an increase postpartum, but the increase was not indicated in plasma. Plasma and urine prolactin concentrations in females made a similar increase during lactation. Male's plasma prolactin clearly indicated an increase directly proportional to strong behavioral contact with the infant. We also confirmed hormonal changes during pregnancy, and postpartum ovulation and subsequent pregnancies, from urine LH/CG data. We found this method extremely useful because of the high correlation between cortisol, prolactin and LH/CG data from blood and urine. The social behavior of the common marmoset has been well studied in captivity, but little is known about the social dynamics of this species in its natural habitat. Social relationships were studied in three polygynous groups of common marmosets,Callithrix jacchus, in northeastern Brazil. Breeding adults appeared to be the center of social life and were the most frequent grooming partners or nearest neighbors for most adult group members. The observations of unidirectional agonistic interactions suggest that breeding adults were also dominant over all other group members, but that neither sex was dominant over the other. The dynamics of within-group social relationships are likely to be important determinants in the reproductive strategies employed by marmoset females.  相似文献

This study examined the reproductive status of mothers and daughters to determine if parent-eldest daughter interactions would influence the daughter's fertility in the cooperatively breeding common marmoset, Callithrix jacchus. Twice weekly fecal samples were collected for hormonal analyses from seven daughters and their mothers and analyzed for cortisol, estradiol, and progesterone by EIA. Behavioral data were collected three times weekly while the daughters were under three conditions: natal family, after removing from the family and paring with a novel male, and after removing from the paired condition and placed back with the family (renatal). Under the natal condition, five of the seven daughters exhibited ovarian cycles while their mother was pregnant or displaying ovarian cycling. The five cycling daughters spent significantly more time initiating affilative behaviors with their mothers than with their fathers and showed significant changes in their behavior over the length of the ovarian cycle. However, aggression, submission, and sexual behaviors were very low for daughters in the natal phase. No differences between cortisol levels were found for a daughter and her mother. Cortisol levels showed a significant and sustained increase upon pairing within the first 20 days. All females but one cycled while paired. Six of the seven females were accepted back into the family after pairing and five of the seven females were ovulating. These results suggest that marmoset daughters are not necessarily reproductively suppressed while living with the family. Additionally, these data suggest that female marmosets that leave their family to explore mating opportunities with other groups may return to their family without reproductive or aggressive consequences.  相似文献
