Dioecy has evolved independently several times in the large, mostly tropical genusSolanum. In all cases of dioecy inSolanum functionally male flowers have normal anthers, normal pollen and reduced stigmas while functionally female flowers have stigmas and anthers that appear normal but contain non-functional, usually inaperturate pollen. The inaperturate pollen has living cytoplasm, but apparently never germinates and it has been hypothesised that the pollen in these functionally female flowers is retained as a pollinator reward. Pollen morphology is compared in twelve of the thirteen known dioecious species ofSolanum, and some stages in the the development of inaperturate pollen in the anthers of functionally female flowers ofSolanum confertiseriatum of Western Ecuador are examined. Observations on the development and morphology of inaperturate pollen in functionally female flowers ofSolanum are related to hypotheses about the evolution of dioecy in the genus.  相似文献

Field and laboratory studies of 19 diclinous species endemic to Australia help to clarify the nature and evolution of andromonoecy, androdioecy, and dioecy in the genus Solanum. Ten species are andromonoecious; typically these species bear inflorescences with a single, large basal hermaphroditic flower and 12–60 distal, smaller staminate flowers. We suggest that the andromonoecious condition was derived from hermaphroditic-flowered ancestors in part by hemisterilization of flowers but largely by addition of staminate flowers. The resultant larger inflorescences are hypothesized to serve both to attract and to entrain pollinators, yielding more or higher-quality seed set in hermaphroditic flowers and/or greater dispersion of pollen from staminate flowers. We suggest that andromonoecy may also serve to reduce selling. Nine other species are morphologically androdioecious but functionally dioecious. In these species, staminate flowers, like those of the andromonoecious species, bear anthers with copious tricolporate pollen and a highly reduced gynoecium. The morphologically hermaphroditic flowers are functionally pistillate and borne singly in inflorescences, and they bear anthers with inaperturate pollen. The inaperturate pollen, although viable, never germinates and is hypothesized to be retained in pistillate flowers as a reward to pollinators in the nectarless Solanum flowers. All other species of Solanum studied with pollen dimorphism in which one pollen morph is inaperturate are also best treated as functionally dioecious. We conclude that there is no evidence for androdioecy in Solanum. A review of other families suggests that there is little support for this unusual breeding system in any other angiosperm group either. Preliminary analyses suggest that andromonoecy and dioecy are polyphyletic in Solanum. Furthermore, dioecy is as likely to have arisen from hermaphroditic as from andromonoecious ancestors.  相似文献

The morphology and function of the flowers of three species of the genusCallicarpa, C. glabra, C. nisnimurae andC. subpubescens, endemic to the Bonin Islands, revealed that all three species were dioecious. Male plants had short-styled flowers with sterile ovaries, while female plants had long-styled flowers with non-germinating inaperturate pollen grains. Such dioecism has never been reported from the family Verbenaceae. This curious sexual system with non-germinating pollen grains may have been maintained as a reward to insect pollinators.  相似文献

While several plant species are initially described as androdioecious, upon more thorough investigation, many of these are found to be cryptically dioecious with functionally male flowers and perfect flowers that produce inaperturate pollen or are otherwise functionally female on separate plants. The change in function of pollen produced by perfect flowers opens up the possibility for the evolution of sexual dimorphism in pollen grain size. We found that Thalictrum macrostylum (Ranunculaceae) is cryptically dioecious, and produces apparently inaperturate pollen in perfect flowers. In four field sites throughout North Carolina, inaperturate grains are larger than grains from staminate flowers and also show a greater variance in size. We also found substantial variation in pollen grain size among plants. The sites with lower soil nutrient content also had smaller pollen grains of both types, although local adaptation or genetic drift may also be causing among-site variation.  相似文献

We document distyly in Damnacanthus (Rubiaceae) and investigate pollen morphology in the genus. Within nine taxa in Japan (four species, four varieties and one form), five show distyly. Non-distylous taxa of Damnacanthus always have a long style and short stamens. We examined the pollen morphology of all taxa of Damnacanthus in Japan. The pollen grains of Damnacanthus are 3- to 5-orthocolporate or sometimes loxocolporate. Polymorphic pollen is sometimes observed even within a single flower. Pollen dimorphism is associated with distyly; pollen grains from short-styled (thrum) flowers are significantly larger than those from long-styled (pin) flowers, and the muri are smooth in pin flowers whereas the pollen grains of thrum flowers have minute granules on the top and/or on the sides. In non-distylous taxa, in which the style is longer than stamens, the muri are always provided with minute granules. Interestingly, the pollen grains with granules in the non-distylous taxa contrast with the pollen of the distylous taxa, because granulate pollen grains are found only in thrum flowers. Although Damnacanthus is a stenopalynous genus, the number of colpi is useful for delimiting taxa. Based on palynological characters, we conclude that Damnacanthus should be revised. Pollination or fertilisation trigger floral senescence in a wide range of flowering plants, and yet little attention has been given to the implications of this phenomenon to mating system evolution. We examined the effects of pollination on floral senescence in the genus Leptosiphon. Species in the genus exhibit a wide range of breeding systems. In all cases, compatible pollination induced senescence; emasculated flowers lived longer than hand‐outcrossed flowers. In the self‐compatible species, Leptosiphon acicularis and L. bicolor, and in one highly selfing population of L. jepsonii, unmanipulated flowers had reduced longevity compared to emasculated flowers, suggesting that autonomous self‐pollination limits floral longevity in these species. Limited floral longevity in these highly selfing taxa may reduce opportunities for male outcross success, representing a possible source of selection on the mating system. In turn, the mating system might influence how selection acts on floral longevity; obligately outcrossing taxa are expected to benefit from longer floral longevities to maximise opportunities for pollination, while selfing taxa might benefit from earlier floral senescence to reduce resource expenditure. Overall, the longevity of unpollinated flowers increased with the level of outcrossing in the genus Leptosiphon. Our results taken together with those of a previous study and similar results in other species suggest that floral longevity may represent a largely unexamined role in mating system evolution.  相似文献

Apertures are key characters of pollen grains with systematic importance in angiosperms. They function as sites for pollen tube exit, water uptake, transfer of recognition substances and accommodation of volume changes. Not all pollen has apertures; inaperturate pollen (lacking obvious apertures) characterizes many angiosperm groups, especially in early divergent angiosperms and monocots, but also eudicots. In order to expand our knowledge of the systematic distribution, possible functional significance and development of inaperturate pollen in angiosperms, this review focuses on inaperturate and cryptoaperturate (with hidden apertures) pollen in the large eudicot clade, which comprises about 75% of present‐day angiosperm species. It includes new TEM observations of inaperturate pollen from four exemplar taxa selected from different parts of the eudicot phylogeny. Two categories of inaperturate (including cryptoaperturate) pollen occur in eudicots. (1) Sterile attractant or feeding pollen associated with functional dioecy has evolved iteratively at least six times in conjunction with complex breeding systems in the core eudicots. (2) Fertile pollen has evolved numerous times independently throughout eudicots, though generally in a relatively small number of individual taxa. Notable exceptions are the petaliferous crotonoid Euphorbiaceae s.s., in which fertile inaperturate pollen occurs in c. 1500 species, and two subfamilies of Apocynaceae s.l. (Secamonoideae and Asclepiadoideae) with c. 2500 species with fertile inaperturate pollen in pollinia. Fertile inaperturate pollen is sometimes (but not always) associated with an aquatic habit, parasitism, insectivory, heterostyly, anemophily or pollinia. Most fertile inaperturate pollen has a thin exine, or the exine is largely restricted to isolated components (muri, protuberances, subunits) separated by thinner areas which probably function as apertures. In cryptoaperturate pollen, the aperture is covered by continuous exine which probably has a protective function, similar to an operculum. Developmentally, inaperturate pollen is not associated with any particular tetrad type or meiotic spindle orientation (unlike some apertures) due to the absence of a colpal shield of endoplasmic reticulum or other organelles and hence is independent of microsporogenesis type. The lack of a colpal shield during the tetrad stage of development permits complete deposition of first primexine and then exine around each microspore, possibly mediated by the action of the DEX1 protein. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 155 , 29–48.  相似文献

Pollen grains of five species and two interspecific hybrids ofTrillium from eastern Asia have been examined with scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. All species from eastern Asia, excludingT. govanianum, are characterized by inaperturate pollen and an unstratified and granulated exine structure. Pollen of the Himalayan species,T. govanianum, is, however, monocolpate and intectate. The palynological evidence suggests that the Asiatic species, excludingT. govanianum, are closely related to each other and toT. erectum in North America, andT. govanianum is independent of the other species in the genus.  相似文献

The size of pollen in the genus Hordeum (Poaceae) is correlated with ploidy level and breeding system. Generally, the pollen size increases with the ploidy level, and outbreeding species possess significantly larger pollen than inbreeders. In H. roshevitzii (2x), H. pusilplum (2x), H. murinum subsp. murinum (4x), and H. parodii (6x) pollen, heteromorphisms occur between the central and the lateral florets of the triplet. In all four taxa, pollen from florets in which the anthers are exserted is larger than pollen from florets where the anthers remain inside the floret. The biological consequences of heteromorphic pollen are discussed, and a model for the evolution of breeding strategies in Hordeum is suggested.  相似文献

Summary The genus Capparis is represented in Israel by three taxons of the section spinosa. The pollinators of the three taxa are hawkmoths, crepuscular bees of the genus Proxylocopa and various daily bees. However, the efficiency of the different pollinators is very varied with respect to the individual taxons. Hawkmoths were frequently observed as pollinators of C. spinosa var. aravensis and C. ovata, but rarely on C. spinosa var. aegyptia. All the other bees, on the other hand, were found abundantly on all three taxons, all over the country. The three taxa all provide different rewards for their particular pollinators. Bees visiting C. spinosa var. aegyptia are provided with a lot of pollen but a relatively small amount of nectar, with a low sugar content. C. spinosa var. aravensis and C. ovata (the flowers visited more by hawkmoths), have less pollen but a higher amount of nectar which has a higher concentration of sugar. In drier habitats the emphasis of the reward provided by the flowers is nectar, whilst in the Mediterranean habitats it is the pollen which is the reward, without any connection to the systematic origin of the plant.  相似文献

The Normapolles complex, characterised by its oblate and triaperturate pollen, constitutes an important and diverse element of many Late Cretaceous and Early Cainozoic floras of the Northern Hemisphere. Based on the dispersed pollen record alone it has been difficult to assess systematic affinities, but relationships with Fagales have been proposed. Over the past twenty years several exquisitely preserved Late Cretaceous reproductive structures with Normapolles type pollen in situ have been described. In this study we provide a summary and new information of these floral structures. Further, a new genus, Dahlgrenianthus, is described from the Late Cretaceous of southern Sweden. The genus includes the type species Dahlgrenianthus suecicus, a number of reproductive structures referred to Dahlgrenianthus sp., and Dahlgrenianthus trigonus (Knobloch et Mai) comb. nov. from the Maastrichtian flora of Walbeck, Germany. Dahlgrenianthus comprises small flowers with pentamerous perianth and androecium and a tricarpellate gynoecium. It is distinguished from all other Normapolles floral structures in its hypogynous floral organisation. All Normapolles floral structures described so far are thought to be related to various members of the core Fagales, but the group is obviously not monophyletic. The stratigraphic range of the Normapolles taxa and other fagalean fossils strongly suggests that all major fagalean lineages were present by the Cenomanian or earlier.

Heterostyly is thought to have evolved because it confers efficiency of cross-pollination. While it can be an alternative to an incompatibility mechanism in tube-shaped flowers, its effectiveness in dish-shaped flowers, such as those of Fagopyrum esculentum, has not been demonstrated. Stigmatic pollen loads were examined over the daily course of pollination in a planted field of this crop species. Natural pollination by bees resulted in 23% of the pollen on pin flowers and 69% on thrum flowers being legitimate. Both flower morphs therefore received the two pollen types in about the same proportions. Pin pollen constituted 74% of the pollen delivered to stigmata, even though the two morphs are present in equal numbers. Pin flowers collected about 75 pollen, and thrum flowers about 25 pollen by the end of the day of anthesis. The net result was about 15 compatible pollen per flower on both floral morphs. These results indicate that heterostyly is associated with excess pin-pollen delivery rather than excess legitimate-pollen delivery in F. esculentum.  相似文献

Pollen of 53 species of Dilleniaceae and Actinidiaceae was examined by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and a selected group in transmission electron microscopy. Dilleniaceae pollen ranges from tricolpate, tricolporate, tetracolpate, and incipiently inaperturate. Tricolpate types occur only among the Old World subfamily Dillenioideae and the compound aperturate (3-colporate) condition is restricted to the subfamily Tetraceroideae. Within the Dilleniaceae the tricolpate pollen type with elongated apertures is considered primitive, having given rise to the 3-colporate and 4-colpate conditions. The striking pollen dimorphism in the Neotropical species of Tetracera, all of which are androdioecious, is documented; however, in contrast to previous reports, pollen from bisexual flowers appears to be incipiently inaperturate and not pantoporate. The inaperturate condition is interpretated as an early stage in the evolution of outcrossing. Pollen morphology does not support a close relationship between Dilleniaceae and Actinidiaceae. Pollen morphological differences that can be noted between these families are: tectum complete and predominantly psilate or psilate-granular in Actinidiaceae, tectum incomplete, punctate to reticulate in Dilleniaceae; an equatorial bridge of ektexine over the endoaperture usually present in Actinidiaceae, absent in Dilleniaceae; columellae reduced in Actinidiaceae, columellae usually well-developed in Dilleniaceae. Pollen morphology does not argue against a close relationship between Actinidiaceae and Theaceae.  相似文献

Phylogenetic analyses based on morphology placeAnaxagorea and other taxa with granular monosulcate pollen, as in otherMagnoliales, at the base ofAnnonaceae. Taxa with columellar tetrads, granular tetrads, and inaperturate monads form a derived clade. To test the systematic importance of palynology, we analyzed the data set with pollen characters removed. The result was lower resolution and a different rooting of the family, betweenUvariopsis and other groups with columellar tetrads.Anaxagorea and other monosulcates are higher in the tree, implying that granular monosulcate pollen, laminar stamens, and irregular endosperm ruminations are reversals. This rooting is highly unparsimonious when pollen characters are included, and only weakly supported over theAnaxagorea rooting when pollen is excluded. Together with preliminary molecular analyses, these experiments confirm the special value of palynology in systematics ofAnnonaceae. This paper is dedicated to emer. Premise

Divergence of floral morphology and breeding systems are often expected to be linked to angiosperm diversification and environmental niche divergence. However, available evidence for such relationships is not generalizable due to different taxonomic, geographical and time scales. The Palearctic genus Helianthemum shows the highest diversity of the family Cistaceae in terms of breeding systems, floral traits, and environmental conditions as a result of three recent evolutionary radiations since the Late Miocene. Here, we investigated the tempo and mode of evolution of floral morphology in the genus and its link with species diversification and environmental niche divergence.

Methods

We quantified 18 floral traits from 83 taxa and applied phylogenetic comparative methods using a robust phylogenetic framework based on genotyping-by-sequencing data.

Results

We found three different floral morphologies, putatively related to three different breeding systems: type I, characterized by small flowers without herkogamy and low pollen to ovule ratio; type II, represented by large flowers with approach herkogamy and intermediate pollen to ovule ratio; and type III, featured by small flowers with reverse herkogamy and the highest pollen to ovule ratio. Each morphology has been highly conserved across each radiation and has evolved independently of species diversification and ecological niche divergence.

Conclusions

The combined results of trait, niche, and species diversification ultimately recovered a pattern of potentially non-adaptive radiations in Helianthemum and highlight the idea that evolutionary radiations can be decoupled from floral morphology evolution even in lineages that diversified in heterogeneous environments as the Mediterranean Basin.  相似文献

  • Explosive pollen release is a mechanism used by some angiosperms that serves to attach pollen to a pollinator's body. It is usually adopted by species with zygomorphic tubular flowers and pollinated by birds and bees. The tree genus Meliosma (Sabiaceae, Proteales) has unique disc‐like flowers that are externally actinomorphic, but internally zygomorphic, and release pollen explosively.
  • To elucidate the adaptive significance of explosive pollen release, we observed flowering behaviour, the breeding system and pollinator visits to flowers of the Japanese species Meliosma tenuis in a temperate forest. Flowers bloomed in June and were nectariferous and protandrous. Explosive pollen release was triggered by slight tactile stimuli to anther filaments or staminodes in male‐stage flowers.
  • Because pollen cannot come into contact with the pistils enclosed by staminodes, M. tenuis is functionally protandrous. Artificial pollination treatments revealed that M. tenuis is allogamous. The dominant flower visitors were nectar‐seeking drones of the bumblebee species Bombus ardens (Apidae). The drones’ behaviour, pollen attachment on their bodies and fruit set of visit‐restricted flowers suggest that they are the only agent triggering the explosive pollen release mechanism, and are the main pollinator of M. tenuis.
  • The finding that bumblebee workers rarely visit these flowers suggests that the explosive pollen release has another function, namely to discourage pollen‐harvesting bumblebee workers.

Pollen grains of 30 taxa of the genus Stachys (29 spp. and one subsp.), representing 9 of the currently recognized sections and 1 species of the closely related genus Sideritis (Si. montana) distributed in Iran were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. Twenty-eight taxa are studied for the first time under aspects of pollen morphology. The basic shape of the pollen grains in most taxa studied is prolate-spheroidal, but subprolate, spheroidal and oblate-spheroidal pollen grains can also be found in few species. The grains are usually tricolpate (the amb triangular), but also tetracolpate (the amb circular to more or less square) in some species (S. iberica, S. atherocalyx and Si. montana). The surface is microreticulate (the frequent type), reticulate, perforate, foveolate-psilate or foveolate. The lumina are separated by smooth or sinuate muri which make them polygonal, more or less rounded and elongate. Major pollen morphological features of the taxa studied are compared and discussed on the basis of taxonomical concepts. In some cases, these characters are useful in delimitation of formerly introduced sections while they mostly provide further characters in separating related species from each other. For example, all members of S. sect. Aucheriana are characterized by elongated lumina. Based on the oblate-spheroidal shape of its pollen as well as tetracolpate aperture type, the results of the present study confirm sect. Pontostachys as including S. angustifolia, S. iberica, S. sparsipilosa as well as S. atherocalyx. Our results also suggest that although some species like S. fruticolosa and S. lavandulifolia are morphologically well characterized, they cannot be separated from other species of Stachys based on pollen morphology.  相似文献
