This paper examines whether the in vivo behavior of yeast glycolysis can be understood in terms of the in vitro kinetic properties of the constituent enzymes. In nongrowing, anaerobic, compressed Saccharomyces cerevisiae the values of the kinetic parameters of most glycolytic enzymes were determined. For the other enzymes appropriate literature values were collected. By inserting these values into a kinetic model for glycolysis, fluxes and metabolites were calculated. Under the same conditions fluxes and metabolite levels were measured. In our first model, branch reactions were ignored. This model failed to reach the stable steady state that was observed in the experimental flux measurements. Introduction of branches towards trehalose, glycogen, glycerol and succinate did allow such a steady state. The predictions of this branched model were compared with the empirical behavior. Half of the enzymes matched their predicted flux in vivo within a factor of 2. For the other enzymes it was calculated what deviation between in vivo and in vitro kinetic characteristics could explain the discrepancy between in vitro rate and in vivo flux.  相似文献

Bumblebee workers vary greatly in size, unlike workers of most other social bees. This variability has not been adequately explained. In many social insects, size variation is adaptive, with different-sized workers performing different tasks (alloethism). Here we established whether workers of the bumblebee, Bombus terrestris (L.) (Hymenoptera; Apidae), exhibit alloethism. We quantified the size of workers engaging in foraging compared to those that remain in the nest, and confirmed that it is the larger bees that tend to forage (X±SE thorax widths 4.34±0.01 mm for nest bees and 4.93±0.02 mm for foragers). We then investigated whether large bees are better suited to foraging because they are able to transport heavier loads of food back to the nest. Both pollen and nectar loads of returning foragers were measured, demonstrating that larger bees do return with a heavier mass of forage. Foraging trip times were inversely related to bee size when collecting nectar, but were unrelated to bee size for bees collecting pollen. Overall, large bees brought back more nectar per unit time than small bees, but the rate of pollen collection appeared to be unrelated to size. The smallest foragers had a nectar foraging rate close to zero, presumably explaining why foragers tend to be large. Why might larger bees be better at foraging? Various explanations are considered: larger bees are able to forage in cooler conditions, may be able to forage over larger distances, and are perhaps also less vulnerable to predation. Conversely, small workers are presumably cheaper to produce and may be more nimble at within-nest tasks. Further research is needed to assess these possibilities. Can antioxidants be beneficial in the treatment of lead poisoning?   总被引:29,自引:0,他引:29  
Recent studies have shown that lead causes oxidative stress by inducing the generation of reactive oxygen species, reducing the antioxidant defense system of cells via depleting glutathione, inhibiting sulfhydryl-dependent enzymes, interfering with some essential metals needed for antioxidant enzyme activities, and/or increasing susceptibility of cells to oxidative attack by altering the membrane integrity and fatty acid composition. Consequently, it is plausible that impaired oxidant/antioxidant balance can be partially responsible for the toxic effects of lead. Where enhanced oxidative stress contributes to lead-induced toxicity, restoration of a cell's antioxidant capacity appears to provide a partial remedy. Several studies are underway to determine the effect of antioxidant supplementation following lead exposure. Data suggest that antioxidants may play an important role in abating some hazards of lead. To explain the importance of using antioxidants in treating lead poisoning the following topics are addressed: (i) Oxidative damage caused by lead poisoning; (ii) conventional treatment of lead poisoning and its side effects; and (iii) possible protective effects of antioxidants in lead toxicity.  相似文献

A key question in attractiveness studies is the validity of the reported results outside the narrow confines of the experimental paradigm used. Does the range of physical features in a set of pictures used to test attractiveness judgements predict the individual ratings of each body? Or does each stimulus have an attractiveness value independent of the range of attractiveness found in the image set of which it is a part? An additional problem is that because participants are often shown a relatively large array of images in a short space of time, this may produce perceptual biases, which could cause a short-term shift in attractiveness preferences, which are not usually found in real-life mate choice decisions. To address this issue, we asked 20 participants (10 male and 10 female) to judge the attractiveness of 20 digital photographs of female bodies. We then asked a different set of 400 people (who had not seen the body pictures) to judge the attractiveness of one of the bodies from the set (so each body was rated in isolation by 10 male and 10 female participants). We then compared the attractiveness judgement each body received when seen independently versus when it was seen within the context of a set of bodies. The results showed no significant difference between the two conditions, which suggests that each body has an attractiveness value independent of the attractiveness of the other bodies with which it is viewed.  相似文献

The Cajal body is an intriguing nuclear structure present in a great variety of plant, animal, and some fungal cells. Recent work on the ribonucleoprotein enzyme telomerase has indicated an unanticipated degree of intranuclear dynamics of both its RNA and protein subunits. In this paper we discuss the epistemological positions of evolution theories. A sharp distinction is made between the theory that species evolved from common ancestors along specified lines of descent (here called the theory of common descent), and the theories intended as causal explanations of evolution (e.g. Lamarck's and Darwin's theory). The theory of common descent permits a large number of predictions of new results that would be improbable without evolution. For instance, (a) phylogenetic trees have been validated now; (b) the observed order in fossils of new species discovered since Darwin's time could be predicted from the theory of common descent; (c) owing to the theory of common descent, the degrees of similarity and difference in newly discovered properties of more or less related species could be predicted. Such observations can be regarded as attempts to falsify the theory of common descent. We conclude that the theory of common descent is an easily-falsifiable & often-tested & still-not-falsified theory, which is the strongest predicate a theory in an empirical science can obtain. Theories intended as causal explanations of evolution can be falsified essentially, and Lamarck's theory has been falsified actually. Several elements of Darwin's theory have been modified or falsified: new versions of a theory of evolution by natural selection are now the leading scientific theories on evolution. We have argued that the theory of common descent and Darwinism are ordinary, falsifiable scientific theories.  相似文献

Inulin, EDTA, or maltose were given intragastrically to mice, either free or entrapped in mono-shell liposomes of egg phosphatidylcholine or the non-digestible diether and dialkyl analog of phosphatidylcholine. The method of reconstructing quantum bumps in photoreceptor cells from noise data by making use of shot noise theory is critically reviewed. The application of this method produces results irrespective of whether the conditions for reconstructing bumps by the method are satisfied or not and even irrespective of whether at high stimulus intensities quantum bumps exist or not. We argue that at high intensities the concept of quantum bumps indeed becomes physically meaningless and degenerates to a purely mathematical concept. In order to investigate the meaning of the results of the reconstruction method, we submit it to a test model for which bumps and single channel opening events can be evaluated analytically. By comparing the analytical results of the test model with that of the reconstruction method applied to the test model we find: (1) even at low intensities, the reconstructed bump values deviate from the analytical results by up to an order of magnitude due to the variability of the bumps, (2) at high intensities, the reconstruction method produces single chennel opening events rather than anything like a quantum bump. We also find, however, that there is no continuous transition from a bump at low intensities to a single channel event at high intensities.  相似文献

Selten (1980, J. theor. Biol. 84, 93(N)/01) has shown that mixed strategies cannot be evolutionarily stable in asymmetric games. Because every interaction features some asymmetry, this result apparently precludes mixed strategies in an evolutionary setting. In Maynard Smith's Hawk-Dove game (1982, Evolution and the theory of games (UP-Cambridge), for example, Selten's result restricts attention to pure-strategy evolutionarily stable outcomes in which the animals use the ability to condition their actions on asymmetries to coordinate, with one playing Hawk and one playing Dove, and with conflicts in which both animals play Hawk never arising. This result contrasts with the intuition that the mixed equilibrium of the Hawk-Dove game captures important aspects of many animal interactions, including the possibility of conflict. In this paper, we follow Eshel and Sansone (1995, J. theor. Biol. 177, 341-356) in enriching Selten's model to incorporate an important aspect of animal interactions, namely that payoffs and asymmetries may both be imperfectly observed. In the richer model, we find conditions under which effectively mixed strategies are stable in asymmetric games, as well as conditions under which they are not stable. Behavior will be conditioned on asymmetries, leading to pure-strategy equilibria in which conflict is avoided, when there are relatively large, observable asymmetries and small observable variations in payoffs. Under opposite conditions, evolutionarily stable equilibria will appear that are effectively mixed, including the potential for conflict.  相似文献

This paper is an attempt at exploring the possibility of reconciling the two interpretations of biolinguistics which have been recently projected by Koster (Biolinguistics 3(1):61–92, 2009). The two interpretations—trivial and nontrivial—can be roughly construed as non-internalist and internalist conceptions of biolinguistics respectively. The internalist approach boils down to a conception of language where language as a mental grammar in the form of I-language grows and functions like a biological organ. On the other hand, under such a construal consistent with Koster’s (Biolinguistics 3(1):61-92, 2009), the non-internalist version does not necessarily have to be externalist in nature; rather it is a matter of mutual reinforcement of biology and culture under the rubric of a co-evolutionary dynamics. Here it will be argued that the apparent dichotomy between these two conceptions of biolinguistics can perhaps be resolved if we have a richer synthesis that accounts for both internalism and non-internalism.  相似文献

For intertidal fishes belonging to three species, the herbivore Scartichthys viridis (Blenniidae), the omnivore Girella laevifrons (Kyphosidae) and the carnivore Graus nigra (Kyphosidae), mass and body size relationships were higher in individuals from an upwelling zone compared with those from a non‐upwelling zone. RNA:DNA were higher in the herbivores and omnivores from the upwelling zone. Higher biomass and RNA:DNA in the upwelling intertidal fishes may be a consequence of an increased exposure to higher nutrient availability, suggesting that increased physiological conditioning in vertebrates from upwelling areas can be detected and measured using intertidal fishes of different trophic levels.  相似文献

Lake Zwemlust (area 1.5 ha, Zm 1.5 m) has been the object of an extensive limnological study since its biomanipulation involving removal of planktivorous fish (bream) in March 1987 and emptying of the lake. In the subsequent summer period of 1987 the Secchi depth increased to the lake bottom (2.5 m), compared withca 30 cm in the earlier summers. The reaction of submerged macrophytes to improving under-water light climate was rapid. In summer 1987, besides the introducedChara globularis, 5 species of submerged macrophytes occurred and colonized 10% of the lake area. In 1988 and 1989 only quantitative changes were observed; new species did not appear, but the area colonized by macrophytes increased by 7 and 10 times, respectively.Elodea nuttallii was dominant among the macrophytes andMougeotia sp. among the filamentous green algae. Their abundance, contributed to transient N-limination of phytoplankton causing a persistent clear water phase in 1988 and 1989, unlike in 1987 when zooplankton grazing contributed chiefly to the water clarity. Laboratory bioassays on macrophytes confirmed nitrogen limitation.  相似文献
