In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Kent et al. (2011) describe the adaptive evolution of honey bee vitellogenin that belongs to a phylogenetically conserved group of egg yolk precursors. This glyco‐lipoprotein leads a double life: it is central to egg production in the reproductive queen caste, and a regulator of social behaviour in the sterile worker caste. Does such social pleiotropy constrain molecular evolution? To the contrary; Kent et al. show that the vitellogenin gene is under strong positive selection in honey bees. Rapid change has taken place in specific protein regions, shedding light on the evolution of novel vitellogenin functions.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A simulation model is presented which describes, from field-estimated parameters, the effects of daily survival rate and proportion of sunny days on the lifetime egg production of females of the damselfly Coenagrion puella (L).
2. Lifetime egg production increases with daily survival rate and proportion of sunny days.
3. Estimates of mean lifetime egg production per female in bad and good summers in northern England ranged from 333 to 740.
4. The distribution, as well as the proportion, of sunny days influences lifetime egg production. For a given combination of daily survival and proportion of sunny days, lifetime egg production decreases as the distribution of sunny days becomes more clumped.
5. Lifetime egg production is largely determined by chance; females who begin their mature adult life during a period of sunny weather can produce many times more eggs than those whose mature adult life coincides with cloudy days.  相似文献

Simple stoichiometric models based on the principle that limitingelements are used with high efficiency have been unable to capturethe apparently constant and low nitrogen gross growth efficiencythat characterizes egg production in marine copepods. A newmodel of egg production is presented based on Dynamic EnergyBudget theory. The model splits substrates between nitrogenousand non-nitrogenous compounds, distinguishes between structuraland reserve components of animal biomass, and requires thatassimilated substrates are utilized to meet maintenance costsprior to allocation for egg production. Carbon and nitrogengross growth efficiencies of egg production by Acartia in responseto food C:N are predicted realistically. Production tends tobe maximized when consuming N-rich food, indicating a generalN-limitation, the benefits being greatest at high intake rates. However, food carbon also plays a role in regulating egg productionby supporting protein-sparing biochemical pathways. The modelindicates that zooplankton are unable to utilize dietary N efficientlyfor egg production, even when it is scarce in the diet, becauseof the N demands for maintenance by the adult. The work emphasizesthe need to consider the C and N requirements for maintenancein order to understand dietary constraints to mesozooplanktonproduction.  相似文献

A mathematical model was constructed to predict the egg production of Trichostrongylus colubriformis worms as a function of worm age and host experience of infection. The model set egg production at zero until the worm was 14 days old, when a linear increase to maximum egg production levels occurred over 7 days. It was assumed that egg production remained at maximum levels until a threshold total worm burden was exceeded, when an exponential decline in egg production occurred. The rate of decline was assumed independent of worm age or worm burden. The estimated parameters (maximum egg production, threshold, lag and rate of decline) were optimized by fitting values predicted from the model to faecal egg counts observed in continuously infected sheep, giving R2 = 0.80. The model was validated against faecal egg counts obtained in two other continuous infection experiments, one performed at the same laboratory and the other in Britain.  相似文献

We measured in laboratory experiments the ingestion, egg production and egg hatching rates of female Temora longicornis as a function of diet. The diets consisted of a diatom (Thalassiosira weissflogii), an autotrophic dinoflagellate (Heterocapsa triquetra), and a bacterivorous ciliate (Uronema sp.) given as sole foods, or combinations of these single-food items: diatom+dinoflagellate, diatom+ciliate, dinoflagellate+ciliate, and diatom+ciliate+dinoflagellate. For the three single-item diets, the functional response was similar; i.e., ingestion rate increased linearly with food concentration (food range: ∼25 to ∼600 μg C l−1). When all diets were considered, maximum daily carbon ration (∼70% of body weight) was independent of food type. However, the maximum daily egg production rate (12% of body carbon) was obtained with the diatom diet. For all diets, both ingestion and egg production rates increased with food concentration. Ingestion and egg production rates were affected differently by the interaction of food concentration and food type: at low food concentrations, ingestion rates were highest on diets containing the diatom. At high food concentrations, egg production rates were highest on the two phytoplankter diets and their combination. The presence of the ciliate in the diet did not enhance ingestion rate or egg production. Mixed-food diets did not enhance egg production relative to single-food diets. Hence, dietary diversity did not appear to be particularly advantageous for reproduction. Carbon-specific egg production efficiency (EPE; egg production/ingestion) was independent of food concentration and type, and equaled 9%. Egg hatching success was low (mean<30%) and independent of food concentration and type, and egg production rates. Our results are consistent with previous observations that egg production in T. longicornis is enhanced during diatom blooms. However, the relatively low EPE and egg hatching success suggest that reproduction and recruitment in this study were severely constrained by the biochemical composition of the diet, or the physiological condition of the females towards the end of their season of growth in Long Island Sound.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of food and temperature on the nucleic acid content and egg production (and their relationship) of the tropical copepod Acartia sinjiensis. Experiment 1 evaluated the effect of food quality (as different algae species) on the relationship between nucleic acid content and egg production. In Experiment 2, the main and interaction effects of food type, food concentration and temperature on the total, Carbon and Nitrogen specific egg production and nucleic acid indices were evaluated in a factorial experimental design. Food quality, concentration and temperature significantly affected the nucleic acid content, egg production rate and the nucleic acid-egg production relationship of A. sinjiensis. RNA indices were correlated with egg production in females fed Pavlova salina, Tetraselmis chuii and Chaetoceros muelleri, but not in females fed Isochrysis aff. galbana. The slopes of the linear regressions of RNA indices as predictors of egg production were similar in females fed different algae species, suggesting that the slope of these relationships might be independent of food quality. The DNA content of females was significantly affected by food and temperature, suggesting that it is not a good index of cell number in this species. Nevertheless, the RNA:DNA ratio was as good a predictor of egg production as total RNA content. Egg production showed a weakly positive correlation with temperature. On the other hand, total, C- and N-specific nucleic acid indices had a strong negative correlation with temperature. In addition, temperature had a non linear effect on the slopes of the regression lines of RNA content and RNA:DNA ratio as predictors of egg production—slopes were similar at 25 °C and 30 °C, but significantly lower at 20 °C. Furthermore, the predictability of egg production was improved when the interaction term of nucleic acid indices with temperature was used instead of the nucleic acid indices alone in linear regression models. Our results suggest food quality has a limited influence on the nucleic acid-egg production relationship, and that temperature should be accounted for in models using nucleic acid indices as predictors of egg production in A. sinjiensis.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to examine adult worm burdens, fecal egg output, and in vitro fecundity of Nematospiroides dubius in resistant LAF1 and susceptible CBA mice 12, 15, 18, and 21 days following primary and challenge infections. A strong correlation was obtained on the number of eggs produced by worms cultured in vitro and the egg production as assessed by fecal egg count. Worm counts, fecal egg counts, and in vitro fecundity were similar on all days studied following a primary infection in both mouse strains. However, after challenge infection, LAF1 mice showed lower worm burdens, fecal egg output, and in vitro egg production when compared to CBA mice. Although the egg production of surviving female worms from immune LAF1 mice was decreased, it never fell below a threshold of 100 eggs/day. The reduced fecundity may be a manifestation of a general anti-worm response rather than responses directed specifically at worm reproduction.  相似文献

Intraspecific density effect was investigated for D. simulans , D. suzukii , D. auraria , D. rufa and D. immigrans , and interspecific density effect was examined for combinations of D. simulans , D. rufa and D. immigrans . Different numbers of their eggs were introduced to artificial substrates, and intra- and interspecific interaction were evaluated on the basis of per capita egg production of individuals (eggs) introduced. If individuals died before pupation, their per capita egg production was zero; if individuals survived to pupae, their per capita egg production was estimated from their size based on the relation between the pupal size and lifetime egg production. Per capita egg production thus estimated generally decreased with the increase of the density of conspecific larvae, although a slight increase was detected at high densities in some cases. When two species were introduced, per capita egg production of a species was reduced only when the larval density of co-introduced species was very high, suggesting weak interspecific competition. Interspecific interaction was asymmetric; the effect of D. simulans on D. rufa and D. immigrans was often significantly negative, but the effect of D. rufa or D. immigrans on D. simulans was not significant.  相似文献

Drosophila sechellia, an island endemic that specializes on a single host plant, has a lower rate of egg production than its generalist sister species D. melanogaster, D. simulans, and D. mauritiana. Earlier work showed that part of this difference in egg production was due to a reduction in the number of ovarioles in D. sechellia relative to its sister species. Here, I extend this earlier work by genetically analyzing the difference in egg production between D. sechellia and D. simulans. In all, 10 genetic markers were used in several interspecific backcrosses to identify chromosome regions that affected the rate of egg production. While previously mapped factors affecting ovariole number appear to impact the rate of egg production, new, non-ovariole factors were also identified. Overall, the difference in egg production between D. sechellia and D. simulans appears to be a polygenic trait. The relationship between these factors and genes involved the adaptation of D. sechellia to its host plant is not yet clear. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that decline in egg production is, in part, a negative pleiotropic effect of genetic changes required for host specialization in D. sechellia, although finer-scale genetic analysis of both traits is needed to truly test this hypothesis.  相似文献

In this study we described and analysed changes in the numbers of large ovarian follicles (diameter 6.1-9.0 cm) and in the plasma concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) and estradiol-17beta (E(2)beta) in relation to individual egg production figures of farmed ostriches (Struthio camelus spp.) throughout one year. Ultrasound scanning and blood sampling for plasma hormone analysis were performed in 9 hens on a monthly basis during the breeding season and in two periods of the non-breeding season. Our data demonstrated that: (1) large follicles were detected and LH concentrations were elevated already 1 month before first ovipositions of the egg production season took place; (2) E(2)beta concentrations increased as soon as the egg production season started; (3) numbers of large follicles, LH and E(2)beta concentrations were elevated during the entire egg production season; and that (4) numbers of large follicles, LH and E(2)beta concentrations decreased simultaneous with or following the last ovipositions of the egg production season. By comparing these parameters during the egg production season with their pre-and post-seasonal values, significant differences were found in the numbers of large follicles and E(2)beta concentrations between the pre-seasonal, seasonal and post-seasonal period; while LH concentrations were significantly different between the seasonal and post-seasonal period. In conclusion, our data demonstrate that changes in numbers of large follicles and in concentrations of LH and E(2)beta closely parallel individual egg production figures and provide some new cues that egg production in ostriches is confined to a marked reproductive season. Moreover, our data provide indications that mechanism, initiating, maintaining and terminating the egg production season in farmed breeding ostriches are quite similar to those already known for other seasonal breeding bird species.  相似文献

We studied the allocation of total egg mass to size and number in the carabid beetle Notiophilus biguttatus F. at several temperature and day length regimes. Eggs increase in number and decrease in size with increasing (constant) temperature. Day length interacts with temperature: at short day the effect of temperature on size and number of eggs is weaker than at long day. In diurnally fluctuating temperature regimes, egg size is affected disproportionately by the high temperature period. All treatments, however, are similar in affecting number and size of eggs in an opposite direction. Consequently, egg size is explained to a high degree by egg production rate. The relationship between size and number of eggs among treatments is furthermore characterized by a decrease in egg size with an increase in total egg mass production. Within treatments, rate of egg production and egg size are negatively correlated among females in the low-temperature groups but not in the high-temperature groups; the correlations among females are also characterized by a decrease in egg size, with an increase in total egg mass production. Hence, possible trade-offs between size and number of eggs are masked by phenotypic variation in reproductive effort. The observations enable us to propose a simple conceptual model that explains the within-treatment correlation by the same causal factor as the negative relationship among treatment means.  相似文献

Abstract. The effects of the blood anticoagulants sodium citrate and sodium heparin on horn fly, Haematobia irritans L., egg production were tested. Sodium citrate was added to freshly collected bovine blood to give final concentrations of 5-100mM while sodium heparin was used in concentrations of 10–70 USP units/ml blood. Small cages containing five male and ten female newly emerged laboratory-reared horn flies were maintained for 8–10 days on these blood samples, and mortality and egg production recorded daily. Results showed that as blood citrate concentration was increased, egg production decreased logarithmically. At sodium citrate concentrations of 50 mM and above, severe impacts on egg production and adult horn fly survival occurred. Although no dose-related response of egg production to increasing heparin concentrations was noted, the 25 USP units heparin/ml blood treatments gave the largest egg production, yielding approximately 28% more eggs than any other treatment. Since citrate is a known chelator of divalent metal cations, the effects of supplemental cation additions to citrated blood were tested for their ability to reverse the egg production decrease seen at 50 mM sodium citrate. Blood samples containing 50mM sodium citrate were supplemented with CaCl2, calcium lactate, CuCl2, cupric acetate, FeCl3, ferric citrate, MgCl2, magnesium acetate, MnCl2, ZnSO4, EGTA or EGTA plus calcium lactate, each at 1 mM except EGTA which was used at 2.5 mM. The magnesium acetate supplement and the combination of calcium lactate plus EGTA resulted in a statistically significant increase in egg production ( P < 0.05).  相似文献

Summary Egg production and development of the carabid beetles Notiophilus biguttatus F. and Notiophilus rufipes Curtis were studied in relation to temperature. Adult beetles and larvae were fed springtails of the species Orchesella cincta (Linné). The rate of egg production, at the different temperatures did not differ between the species. As observed in N. biguttatus egg production at a daily fluctuating temperature regime is high compared to egg production at the constant temperatures. Food supply not only has a strong effect on egg production but also on the relation of egg production with temperature, as shown in N. biguttatus. Development times in N. rufipes are longer than in N. biguttatus particularly at low temperatures. The temperature during development has a distinct effect on adult body size. As observed in N. biguttatus body size and fecundity show a strong positive correlation.  相似文献

Egg production and egg quality are complex sex-limited traits that may benefit from the implementation of marker-assisted selection. The primary objective of the current study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with egg traits, egg production, and body weight in a chicken resource population. Layer (White Leghorn hens) and broiler (Cobb-Cobb roosters) lines were crossed to generate an F2 population of 508 hens over seven hatches. Phenotypes for 29 traits (weekly body weight from hatch to 6 weeks, egg traits including egg, albumen, yolk, and shell weight, shell thickness, shell puncture score, percentage of shell, and egg shell colour at 35 and 55 weeks of age, as well as egg production between 16 and 55 weeks of age) were measured in hens of the resource population. Genotypes of 120 microsatellite markers on 28 autosomal groups were determined, and interval mapping was conducted to identify putative QTL. Eleven QTL tests representing two regions on chromosomes 2 and 4 surpassed the 5% genome-wise significance threshold. These QTL influenced egg colour, egg and albumen weight, percent shell, body weight, and egg production. The chromosome 4 QTL region is consistent with multiple QTL studies that define chromosome 4 as a critical region significantly associated with a variety of traits across multiple resource populations. An additional 64 QTL tests surpassed the 5% chromosome-wise significance threshold.  相似文献

A genome scan was performed to detect chromosomal regions that affect egg production traits in reciprocal crosses between two genetically and phenotypically extreme chicken lines: the partially inbred line New Hampshire (NHI) and the inbred line White Leghorn (WL77). The NHI line had been selected for high growth and WL77 for low egg weight before inbreeding. The result showed a highly significant region on chromosome 4 with multiple QTL for egg production traits between 19.2 and 82.1 Mb. This QTL region explained 4.3 and 16.1% of the phenotypic variance for number of eggs and egg weight in the F2 population, respectively. The egg weight QTL effects are dependent on the direction of the cross. In addition, genome‐wide suggestive QTL for egg weight were found on chromosomes 1, 5, and 9, and for number of eggs on chromosomes 5 and 7. A genome‐wide significant QTL affecting age at first egg was mapped on chromosome 1. The difference between the parental lines and the highly significant QTL effects on chromosome 4 will further support fine mapping and candidate gene identification for egg production traits in chicken.  相似文献

Monthly observations were made on egg production and egg survival of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus , at five sites in northern Queensland from August 1978 to July 1980. Egg production was close to the potential except in the hot, dry season in the drier sites and a model was fitted to explain the data. The main factors that reduced egg production were maximum soil temperature greater than 33.6°C, minimum soil temperature less than 17.6°C, and soil moisture less than 0.26 water-holding capacity when the soil maximum temperature was greater than 37.2°C. The model explains 61% of the variation in egg production from an independent set of data from southern Queensland. Analysis of egg viability at the time of retrieval from pasture indicated that the most important variables reducing viability were maximum soil temperature greater than 25.4°C, minimum soil temperature less than 16.9°C, soil moisture below 0.21 water-holding capacity, the sum of degree-days less than 3.95 per day and stress carried over from the egg production phase.  相似文献

Expression of prolactin hormone is a crucial event in regulating egg production in chickens for which promoter plays the vital role in expressing the prolactin gene. The objective of the present study was to identify haplotypes in the prolactin promoter and their effects on egg production and egg quality traits in White Leghorn chicken. Single stranded conformation polymorphism followed by sequencing was conducted to explore polymorphism at 561 bp promoter of prolactin gene. The effect of haplotype combinations on egg production and quality traits were estimated following general linear model technique. The expression of prolactin by different haplogroups was quantified by qPCR. Total 28 haplotypes were found in White Leghorn chicken of which h1 haplotype possessed the highest frequency of 0.46 and h8, h14, h16, h25, h26, and h28 haplotypes had the lowest frequency (0.1%). The egg production up to 52 and 64 weeks of age were found to be significantly (p < 0.05) associated with haplotype combinations where the highest 52-w (52 weeks) egg production was found in animals with h1/h22 combination and the lowest production was observed in the birds with h1/h2 haplogroup. The haplotype combinations had the significant effect (p < 0.05) on Haugh Unit, yolk index and albumen weight at 40 weeks of age; Haugh Unit and albumen weight at 52 weeks of age and Haugh unit, yolk weight and yolk percentage at 64 weeks of age. The prolactin expression in h1/h22 birds was found to be the lowest and in h1/h5 birds to be the highest. The prolactin expression showed significant effect on 52-w egg production and albumin weight at 52 weeks age. In conclusion, it may be stated that the prolactin promoter was highly polymorphic and had the significant association with egg production and quality traits in White Leghorn chicken.  相似文献

Many suspension-feeding copepods show omnivorous feeding behavior. However, the relative contribution to egg production of herbivorous and heterotrophic feeding in copepods remains an open question. In this study, we quantified pigment ingestion rates and egg production rates of the planktonic calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa from July to November of 1986 in Long Island Sound, a large temperate estuary. Pigment ingestion and egg production rates were better correlated to the > 10-µm chlorophyll size fraction than total chlorophyll. Maximum pigment ingestion and egg production rates were observed during the fall bloom in September. Pigment ingestion and egg production rates were linearly related. However, pigment ingestion rates accounted for only 48% of the variance in egg production rates. If female A. tonsa had fed entirely as herbivores over the course of the season, the observed gross efficiency of egg production, K1 = egg production ratelpigment ingestion rate, in terms of nitrogen, would have been 0.68. This growth efficiency is considerably higher than the expected value, K 1 = 0.38, for this species based on laboratory studies of herbivorous feeding. We suggest that the ratio H = K 1/K1 is a measure of the fraction of egg production that is due to herbivorous feeding. Thus, we infer that herbivory accounted for 56% (0.38/0.68) of egg production in A. tonsa in this study. The ratio H is an useful tool in examining the relative contribution to egg production of herbivorous and heterotrophic feeding in copepods.  相似文献

Most studies on the interaction between food supply and reproduction in animals have assumed that energy is likely to be the factor limiting egg number and/or size. In this paper, we investigate whether dietary protein proximately constrains egg production in birds. We provisioned breeding blue tits with two food supplements that differed only in the concentration of five essential amino acids. Birds receiving a supplementary diet containing an amino acid balance close to that required for egg protein formation laid significantly larger clutches (18% greater) than control birds, whereas birds receiving an otherwise identical supplementary diet but without a favourable amino acid balance did not increase egg production. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that dietary amino acid composition may limit egg production in free-living birds.  相似文献
