A sequence of activities all related to the feeding of Scopimera inflata H. Milne-Edwards, 1873 can be distinguished during the daytime periods of low tide. Emergence begins one to two hours after a feeding area is uncovered, reaches a peak after a further three hours but some crabs are still emerging after the tide has turned. Before feeding commences the burrow is cleared of waste sand down to the water-table. While feeding S. inflata forms a feeding trench which acts as an escape route back to the hole and is defended against other crabs of the same species. Agonistic behaviour becomes evident as feeding progresses. Threat displays, fighting, displacement feeding, and agitation feeding are recognizable behaviour patterns which have been observed.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers and configuration patterns were investigated at meiotic metaphase I in pollen mother cells of Carex sociata Boott collected from the Ryukyu Islands. Intraspecific aneuploidy composed of five consecutive chromosome numbers from 2 n = 40 to 2 n = 44 was found, and 2 n = 42 and 2 n = 44 aneuploids were both common. Almost all individuals examined showed stable chromosome associations at meiosis and almost all populations were characterized by a single chromosome number. These facts indicate the establishment of cytodemes in all localities, but the geographical distribution of each aneuploid type is widely overlapping. However, no obvious differences were found with respect to morphological, ecological, and genetic traits between the 2 n = 42 and 2n = 44 aneuploids. Wright's inbreeding coefficients were highly positive, suggesting high levels of inbreeding of this species. The F st-values calculated among 11 populations were significantly positive at all examined loci, indicating the high levels of genetic differentiation among populations. Spatial autocorrelation analysis showed small-scale genetic structure in a population. These facts with respect to breeding system and genetic structure indicate the extreme genetic differentiation and sub structuring of C. sociata populations. We concluded that these reproductive traits such as restricted gene flow and inbreeding resulted in aneuploid differentiation among populations in C. sociata .  相似文献

The dispersal ecology of seventeen maritime species, which are dominant and/or characteristic species of coastal communities on the Ryukyu Islands, was studied. The species wereCalophyllum inophyllum, Canavalia maritima, Clerodendron inerme, Guettarda speciosa, Hernandia sonora, Hibiscus tiliaceus, Ipomoea gracilis, I. pes-caprae, Messerschmidia argentea, Pandanus odoratissimus, Pongamia pinnata, Scaevola frutescens, Sophora tomentosa, Terminalia catappa, Thespesia populnea, Vigna marina andWedelia biflora. The structure and size of disseminules and their buoyancy and viability in seawater were examined in the laboratory. The disseminules of these seventeen species have morphological characteristics for buoyancy, and tests showed that these species could be dispersed by sea currents. Drift disseminules on the drift line, seedlings on the hightide line, and young plants of woody species in the herb zone were observed, being abundant on the coasts of the Ryukyu Islands. The Kuroshio Current carries these disseminules from islands where these species form part of the tropical coastal vegetation.  相似文献

Seven hyphomycete isolates from forest environments of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, were identified to Gliocephalotrichum microchlamydosporum and G. simplex. The former species is a new record in Japan. Although the five known species in the genus Gliocephalotrichum including two isolates of G. microchlamydosporum and four of G. simplex in this study are all soilborne, another isolate of G. simplex was first isolated from an unidentified basidiocarp tissue.  相似文献

A new perchlet, Plectranthias ryukyuensis, is described on the basis of four specimens (41.2–61.6 mm standard length: SL) from the Okinawa Islands, Japan. Plectranthias ryukyuensis can be distinguished from all congeners by the following combination of characters: X, 15 or 16 dorsal-fin rays; 14 pectoral-fin rays, all unbranched; lateral line complete, with 29 or 30 pored scales; 3 scale rows above lateral line; 5 or 6 diagonal rows of large scales on cheek between eye and corner of preopercle; preopercle with two antrorse spines on ventral margin, 20–29 serrae on posterior margin; margins of subopercle and interopercle with a few serrae (weak in large individuals); minute flaps at tips of first to ninth dorsal-fin spines; caudal fin shallowly emarginate, with some ray branches distinctively elongated past fin margin; fourth dorsal-fin spine longest, its length 110.6–128.6% that of third spine; body pinkish-white with two longitudinal rows of irregular orange-red blotches on upper half of lateral surface when fresh (rows close together in smaller than ca. 50 mm SL), blotches interconnecting anteriorly on upper and lower rows, and posterior half of lower row; four faint orange-red vertical bands below lateral line on posterior half of body and two distinct yellow blotches on cheek in fresh specimens; body uniformly yellowish-brown with two longitudinal rows of irregular dark blotches on upper half of lateral surface in preserved specimens (faint in small specimens). A key to the Japanese species of Plectranthias is given.  相似文献

To establish effective locations and sizes of potential protected areas for reef ecosystems, detailed information about source and sink relationships between populations is critical, especially in archipelagic regions. Therefore, we assessed population structure and genetic diversity of Acropora tenuis, one of the dominant stony coral species in the Pacific, using 13 microsatellite markers to investigate 298 colonies from 15 locations across the Nansei Islands in southwestern Japan. Genetic diversity was not significant among sampling locations, even in possibly peripheral locations. In addition, our results showed that there are at least two populations of A. tenuis in the study area. The level of genetic differentiation between these populations was relatively low, but significant between many pairs of sampling locations. Directions of gene flow, which were estimated using a coalescence‐based approach, suggest that gene flow not only occurs from south to north, but also from north to south in various locations. Consequently, the Yaeyama Islands and the Amami Islands are potential northern and southern sources of corals. On the other hand, the Miyako Islands and west central Okinawa Island are potential sink populations. The Kerama Islands and the vicinity of Taketomi Island are potential contact points of genetic subdivision of coral populations in the Nansei Islands. We found that genetic population structure of A. tenuis in the Nansei Islands is more complex than previously thought. These cryptic populations are very important for preserving genetic diversity and should be maintained.  相似文献

A new troglobitic sigillid genus, Kasella , is found in the submarine caves of the Ryukyu Islands. Sigillids are primitive podocopid ostracods having ancient characters such as unequal valves and many small adductor muscle scars. Kasella is possibly derived from the sigillid Cardobairdia , a deep-sea muddy bottom inhabitant, or its relatives. Submarine caves are characterized as both 'safe places', where biological factors such as competition and predation are reduced, and as 'crypts', representing dark and oligotrophic environments. It is likely that Kasella has successfully colonized hard substrates in caves, particularly exploiting the crevices on cave walls and ceilings. Kasella may have adapted to this cryptic habitat in response to strong cytheroidean competition and predation by, for example, gastropods that do not survive well in dark and oligotrophic submarine caves. In adapting to an oligotrophic cave environment, Kasella has undergone significant divergence in carapace morphology, possibly accompanying functional and behavioural changes.  相似文献

Batesian mimicry is a striking example of Darwinian evolution, in which a mimetic species resembles toxic or unpalatable model species, thereby receiving protection from predators. In some species exhibiting Batesian mimicry, nonmimetic individuals coexist as polymorphism in the same population despite the benefits of mimicry. In a previous study, we proposed that the abundance of mimics is limited by that of the models, leading to polymorphic Batesian mimicry in the swallowtail butterfly, Papilio polytes, on the Ryukyu Islands in Japan. We found that their mimic ratios (MRs), which varied among the Islands, were explained by the model abundance of each habitat, rather than isolation by distance or phylogenetic constraint based on the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. In the present study, this possibility was reexamined based on hundreds of nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 93 P. polytes individuals from five Islands of the Ryukyus. We found that the population genetic and phylogenetic structures of P. polytes largely corresponded to the geographic arrangement of the habitat Islands, and the genetic distances among island populations show significant correlation with the geographic distances, which was not evident by the mtDNA‐based analysis. A partial Mantel test controlling for the present SNP‐based genetic distances revealed that the MRs of P. polytes were strongly correlated with the model abundance of each island, implying that negative frequency‐dependent selection interacting with model species shaped and maintained the mimetic polymorphism. Taken together, our results support the possibility that predation pressure, not isolation by distance or other neutral factors, is a major driving force of evolution of the Batesian mimicry in P. polytes from the Ryukyus.  相似文献

Two populations of the red alga Laurencia majuscula (Harvey) Lucas (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales) from Taketomi Island and Hateruma Island, the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, have been characterized on the basis of both morphological features and halogenated secondary metabolite content. These populations have smaller and more slender thalli than those of other regions. Furthermore, the populations contain two chamigrane-type Sesquiterpenoids, (2R, 3R, 5S)-5-acetoxy-2-bromo-3-chlorochamigra-7(14),9-dien-8-one and (2R, 3R)-2-bromo-3-chlorochamigra-7(14), 9-dien-8-one, and a laurane-type sesquiterpenoid, debromoisolaurinterol, as secondary metabolites which are different from those previously reported from other populations. These results are consistent with the concept of ‘chemical races’ within a single species of Laurencia.  相似文献

We evaluated genetic introgression from domesticated pigs into the Ryukyu wild boar (RWB) population on Iriomote Island based on their genetic structure and diversity. We used a combination of mitochondrial DNA D‐loop region (596 bp) polymorphisms and 23 microsatellite markers. RWBs (= 130) were collected from 18 locations on Iriomote Island and compared with 66 reference samples of European and Asian domestic pigs. We identified six distinct haplotypes, involving 22 single nucleotide polymorphisms (including one insertion) in the RWB population. The phylogenetic tree had two branches: the RWB group and domestic lineage. Fourteen of 130 RWBs (10.8%) belonged to the European domestic lineage, including 11 RWBs from the Panari Islands, northwest of Iriomote Main Island (IMI). The heterozygosity values, total number of alleles, number of effective alleles and polymorphism information content of the RWB groups were lower than those of the European domestic groups. The RWB population on IMI had a lower heterozygous deficiency index (FIS = 0.059) than did the other populations, which indicates that this population was more inbred. There was a large genetic distance (FST = 0.560) between RWBs on IMI and the Meishan populations. Structure analysis using the 23 microsatellite markers revealed that 16 RWBs had an admixture pattern between RWB and domesticated pig breeds. These results suggest that gene flow may have occurred from domestic pigs to RWBs and demonstrate that there was low genetic variation in the IMI population.  相似文献

Two new shrimp-associated gobies,Amblyeleotris yanoi sp. nov. andA. masuii sp. nov. are described on the basis of specimens from Iriomote-jima Island and Okinawa-jima Islands, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.A. yanoi is distinguished from other members of the genus by the combination of the following characters: 14 anal fin soft rays, 19 pectoral fin rays, 97–103 longitudinal scales, a candle flame-shaped marking on the caudal fin, a very low membrane connecting the pelvic fins and absence of a ventral frenum.A. masuii differs from all other congeners by having 92–97 longitudinal scales, the length of the interpelvic connecting membrane relative to the longest pelvic fin ray (0.43–0.66), black blotches on the sides of the chin, and blue spots on the opercle and preopercle.  相似文献

Subterranean termites have unusual plasticity in their breeding systems. As a result of their cryptic foraging and nesting habits, detailed information on the numbers and types of reproductive individuals in colonies has been difficult to obtain. In this study, we used microsatellite markers to infer the major features of the breeding system of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus, in southern Japan, where it is believed to have been introduced from China. A total of 30 colonies was sampled from two islands (Kyushu and Fukue) located 100 km apart. Twenty workers from each colony were genotyped at six microsatellite loci. Analysis of worker genotypes within colonies indicated that 27 colonies (90%) were simple (Mendelian) families. The remaining three colonies, all from Kyushu, were consistent with being extended families having begun as simple families but being currently headed by multiple neotenic (secondary) reproductives descended from the original king and queen. Workers from simple families in both populations were significantly inbred (FIT = 0.10 for Kyushu and 0.46 for Fukue) and highly related to their nestmates (coefficient of relatedness, r = 0.59 for Kyushu and 0.77 for Fukue), suggesting that many simple-family colonies were headed by closely related reproductives, especially in the Fukue population. This conclusion is supported by the high coefficient of relatedness between nestmate reproductives in simple-family colonies (r = 0.23 for Kyushu and 0.61 for Fukue) based on genotypes inferred from their worker offspring. There was moderate genetic differentiation (FST = 0.12) between the two populations, suggesting rather restricted gene flow between them. There was no significant isolation by distance among colonies, as might be expected given the limited dispersal of reproductives, presumably because of the frequent movement of colonies by humans. Finally, there was no evidence of a recent bottleneck, a finding possibly consistent with the more than 300-year history of this species in Japan.  相似文献

Ulva limnetica Ichihara et Shimada, sp. nov. (Ulvales, Ulvophyceae) is described from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, and is characterized by thalli that are: (i) branched, tubular, fragile and wrinkled; (ii) up to 80 cm in height and up to 2 cm in diameter; (iii) light to yellowish green in color; and (iv) having an asexual reproduction by means of quadriflagellate swarmers. Rhizoidal cells bear tubular extensions on the outside of the cell layer in the stipe. Ulva limnetica is distinguished from species with similar thalli by chloroplast disposition, branching pattern, number of pyrenoids per cell and gross morphology. It is also distinguished by sequences of the nuclear-encoded 18S ribosomal RNA gene, internal transcribed spacer 2 region and the plastid-encoded large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxgenase gene ( rbc L). Ulva limnetica was clustered with other Ulva species in an early diverging lineage within the genus.  相似文献

Postural patterns in everyday life were observed in the Ryukyu Islands. Postures seem to have two dimensions. In one dimension, they consciously changed their posture in the same action according to situations. In the other dimension, they took a particular posture, e.g., sitting with one knee raised, in different actions. The former may be related to the communicative aspect of posture, while the latter to the technical aspect of posture. Further, some postures, e.g., standing while deeply bending forward, could be regarded as techniques peculiar to their culture. The relation between culture and biology is also discussed with respect to postural patterns which may be related to the traditional lifestyle in Okinawa.  相似文献

Two new species belonging to the Echinoderes coulli group are described with their external morphologies and sequences of nuclear 18S rRNA and 28S rRNA genes, and mitochondrial COI gene. The first species, Echinoderes komatsui sp. n., is characterized by absence of acicular spines, and presence of lateroventral tubules on segments 5 and 8, laterodorsal tubules on segment 10, inverted triangle or wide oval shaped large sieve plates, lateral terminal accessory spines in female, and short tips of ventral pectinate fringe on segment 10. The second species, Echinoderes hwiizaa sp. n., is characterized by absence of acicular spines, and presence of lateroventral tubules on segments 5 and 7–9, midlateral tubules on segment 8, laterodorsal tubules on segment 10, large narrow oval shaped sieve plates on segment 9, and thick, short and blunt lateral terminal spines about 10–15% of trunk length. The diagnostic characters and key to species of E. coulli group are provided as well.  相似文献

Floral morphology and breeding system were examined in natural populations of Psychotria rubra (Rubiaceae) occurring in the Ryukyu Islands in southwest Japan. This species is morphologically dimorphic with long‐ and short‐styled morphs; however, these morphs are functionally dioecious. All long‐styled morphs set fruits, but their short anthers completely lack pollen grains; thus, they function as pistillate flowers. Alternately, short‐styled morphs usually have fertile pollen and never set fruit, whether after open or obligate pollinations; thus, they function as staminate flowers. However, some short‐styled morphs in Mounts Katsuu‐dake and Oppa‐dake populations have no fertile pollens. No fruit was obtained from bagging experiments, indicating that P. rubra requires pollinators for its reproduction. In our pollinator observations, flies and short‐tongued wasps were the main visitors of the flowers of P. rubra. Thus, these insects are probably effective pollinators for P. rubra in the Ryukyu Islands. Considering the morphological features, the dioecy found in P. rubra is probably derived from distyly; however, no sufficient evidence is available showing that dioecy has evolved “directly” from distyly.  相似文献

Variations in the fluxes of planktonic foraminifera were analyzed based on sediment trap data collected over a period of 10 months, from October 1994 to August 1995, at stations JAST01 and JAST02, located on both sides of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. Station JAST01 (latitude 27°23′N, longitude 126°44′E) was deployed at a depth of 1000 m in the Okinawa Trough, East China Sea, along the flow axis of the Kuroshio Current, west of the islands, whereas station JAST02 (latitude 25°4′N, longitude 127°34′E) was deployed at a depth of 3000 m in the Ryukyu Trench, along the western margin of the northwest Pacific, east of the Islands. The total planktonic foraminiferal fluxes (TFFs) in the eastern station were high in winter, when the surface-water column was vertically well mixed. In contrast, the TFF peaks did not show significant seasonality in the western station, but values fluctuated with the northwest–southeast oscillation of the Kuroshio axis. Among the 36 planktonic foraminiferal species identified in the trap samples, Globigerina bulloides, Globigerinita glutinata, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, Globigerinoides ruber, Globigerinoides sacculifer and Globigerina falconensis exhibited a greater shell flux. On both sides of the Ryukyu Island Arc, the fluxes of G. ruber and G. sacculifer increased synchronously with the seasonal warming of surface waters, whereas that of G. falconensis increased during winter, when the water column was vertically well mixed as a result of the NW monsoon. In contrast to these species, which exhibited similar seasonal flux variation patterns at both stations, the species G. bulloides, G. glutinata, N. dutertrei, and P. obliquiloculata displayed different flux variations on both sides of the islands. These fluxes seem to be regulated by phytoplankton productivity, which is controlled by the vertical structure of the water column on the eastern Ryukyu Trench side and by the oscillation of the Kuroshio axis on the western Okinawa Trough side. Lateral transport of suspended planktonic foraminiferal shells to the Okinawa Trough might exist, but is not prominent enough to wipe out the original features of the planktonic foraminiferal flux. The species G. falconensis is an indicator of winter mixing on both sides of the Ryukyu Islands, and may possibly be used as a proxy to trace the intensity of the paleo-winter monsoon.  相似文献
