The present study tested the hypothesis that perceived control results in reduced depressive cognitions. Subjects were divided into two groups, high and low in depressive cognitions (HDC and LDC) based on their scores on a Depression Scale. Subjects (HDC and LDC) were assigned randomly to one of the following treatment conditions: contingent feedback (CF), noncontingent (yoked) feedback (YF), or no feedback (NF) in pulse-rate (PR) regulation. Half the subjects were instructed to decrease (D) and half were instructed to increase (I) PR. The study consisted of three sessions spaced one week apart. Each session was comprised of a three-minute baseline (nonfeedback) trial followed by a 15-minute experimental session. After each experimental session, subjects completed a questionnaire which assessed how well they felt they regulated PR, and the extent to which they attributed such regulation to their ability, effort, the difficulty or ease of the task, and luck. After three sessions, subjects were posttested on the Depression Scale. Results indicated that a significant, though small, reduction in depressive cognitions occurred for CF and YF subjects who were instructed to decrease PR, and this effect was mediated by subjects attributing PR regulation to ability and effort. Results are discussed in terms of the effect that perceived control may have on attributions and reported depression. Also, limitations regarding the generalizability of the findings to a clinical population are discussed.  相似文献

SEVERAL visual discriminations are best for vertical and horizontal test objects and worst for objects oriented at 45° to the main axes1–3. For resolution acuity it is quite clear that the differences are not due to any optical defects1 and it seems probable that the same is true for tasks involving the discrimination of differences in orientation2,3. A likely source of these variations is the orientationally sensitive neurones of the type found in the cat and monkey visual cortex4,5. Psychophysical evidence1,3,6 suggests that similar neurones exist in the human visual system and so we might expect some aspect of the sensitivity of these units to vary as a function of the orientation to which they are maximally sensitive.  相似文献

Weight discrimination is prevalent in American society. Although associated consistently with psychological and economic outcomes, less is known about whether weight discrimination is associated with longitudinal changes in obesity. The objectives of this research are (1) to test whether weight discrimination is associated with risk of becoming obese (Body Mass Index≥30; BMI) by follow-up among those not obese at baseline, and (2) to test whether weight discrimination is associated with risk of remaining obese at follow-up among those already obese at baseline. Participants were drawn from the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative longitudinal survey of community-dwelling US residents. A total of 6,157 participants (58.6% female) completed the discrimination measure and had weight and height available from the 2006 and 2010 assessments. Participants who experienced weight discrimination were approximately 2.5 times more likely to become obese by follow-up (OR = 2.54, 95% CI = 1.58–4.08) and participants who were obese at baseline were three times more likely to remain obese at follow up (OR = 3.20, 95% CI = 2.06–4.97) than those who had not experienced such discrimination. These effects held when controlling for demographic factors (age, sex, ethnicity, education) and when baseline BMI was included as a covariate. These effects were also specific to weight discrimination; other forms of discrimination (e.g., sex, race) were unrelated to risk of obesity at follow-up. The present research demonstrates that, in addition to poorer mental health outcomes, weight discrimination has implications for obesity. Rather than motivating individuals to lose weight, weight discrimination increases risk for obesity.  相似文献

The influence of contrast and color on perceived motion was measured using a speed-matching task. Observers adjusted the speed of an L cone contrast pattern to match that of a variety of colored test patterns. The dependence of speed on test contrast was the same for all test colors measured, differing only by a sensitivity factor. This result suggests that the reduced apparent speed of low contrast targets and certain colored targets is caused by a common cortical mechanism. The cone contrast levels that equate perceived speed differ substantially from those that equate visibility. This result suggests that the neural mechanisms governing speed perception and visibility differ. Perceived speed differences caused by variations in color can be explained by color responses that are characteristic of motion-selective cortex.  相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2010.00426.x Perceived sleep quality among edentulous elders Background: Anatomical changes associated with edentulism are thought to disturb seniors’ sleep. Objectives: (1) To determine sleep quality and daytime sleepiness of edentulous elders. (2) To examine the association between oral health‐related quality of life and sleep quality. Methods: Data were collected at a 1‐year follow‐up from 173 healthy edentulous elders who had participated in a randomised controlled trial and randomly received two types of mandibular prosthesis. Subjective sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI, range 0–21), with higher scores indicating poorer sleep quality. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) was used to measure the level of perceived daytime sleepiness, and scores ≥10 indicated sleepiness. Results: The mean global PSQI and ESS scores were 4.7 ± 3.5 and 5.3 ± 3.9. There were no differences in sleep quality or sleepiness between those who wore their dentures at night and those who did not. Elders with frequent denture problems were sleepier during the day than those with fewer problems (p = 0.0034). General health (p = 0.02) and oral health‐related quality of life (p = 0.001) are significant predictors of sleep quality. Conclusion: Healthy edentulous elders, independent of nocturnal wearing of their prosthesis, are good sleepers. Maintaining high oral health quality of life could contribute to better sleep.  相似文献

Corruption can be unfair and detrimental to societies; however, little is known regarding how individuals perceive corruption. We aim to understand how psychological factors, such as lay belief of the world, influence perceived intention of corruptive behavior. As corruption undermines justice, we hypothesize that belief in a just world to others (BJW-others) reduces perceived intention of corruptive behaviors. We conducted two correlational studies and one experimental study in China. Using hypothetical scenarios, perception toward bribery taking and nepotistic practices were assessed. In Study 1 and Study 2, we consistently found that BJW-others negatively predicted perceived intention of corruption, and this pattern was mediated by perceived likelihood of punishment. We further replicate this result in Study 3 by priming BJW-others, demonstrating its causal effect. The results indicate that BJW as one lay belief can be important in influencing people’s attitudes toward corruption. Implications for future research and anti-corruption policies are also discussed.  相似文献

Background

Many studies have shown the correlation between bruxism and stress that affects the quality of life of university students. The present study highlights this correlation—for the first time—in a group of university students in Italy.

Methods

We have investigated the prevalence of awake and asleep bruxism and its correlation with perceived stress in a group of 278 Italian undergraduate students (117 M). A self report questionnaire was constructed using a socio-demographic test, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and the item n. 8 of the Fonseca Questionnaire for presence of bruxism.

Results

The perceived stress score using PSS-10 scale was 32.2 (SD 4.6, 95% CL 31.6–32.7) for all the subjects, with significant gender difference: M = 31.2 and F = 32.9 (P = 0.0019). The prevalence for awake bruxism was 37.9% (F = 40.8%; M = 34.2%,), while for sleep bruxism was 31.8% (F = 33.3%; M = 29.1%), both without significant gender difference. A positive correlation, with significant concordance and dependence, between stress score and awake bruxism was present for male students only.

Conclusions

University students showed higher bruxism and stress levels compared to the general population, with higher stress for females, but, even if female students show higher stress, a correlation between stress and bruxism exists only for male gender. Further studies should be performed.

Two different sweeteners, sucrose and aspartame, were matchedin perceived sweetness intensity. These solutions were thickenedwith carboxymethylcellulose to six different viscosity levels.Sucrose and aspartame appeared to decrease perceived viscosityof the solutions at a specific sweetener concentration, at allviscosity levels. However, in a second similar experiment withthree viscosity levels and seven sucrose concentrations no effectof sucrose concentration on perceived viscosity was found. Reasonsfor these conflicting results are discussed. No definite conclusionsabout the effect of sweeteners on perceived viscosity can asyet be drawn. Chem. Senses 20: 441–450, 1995.  相似文献

Functional facial deformities are usually described as those that impair respiration, eating, hearing, or speech. Yet facial scars and cutaneous deformities have a significant negative effect on social functionality that has been poorly documented in the scientific literature. Insurance companies are declining payments for reconstructive surgical procedures for facial deformities caused by congenital disabilities and after cancer or trauma operations that do not affect mechanical facial activity. The purpose of this study was to establish a large, sample-based evaluation of the perceived social functioning, interpersonal characteristics, and employability indices for a range of facial appearances (normal and abnormal). Adult volunteer evaluators (n = 210) provided their subjective perceptions based on facial physical appearance, and an analysis of the consequences of facial deformity on parameters of preferential treatment was performed. A two-group comparative research design rated the differences among 10 examples of digitally altered facial photographs of actual patients among various age and ethnic groups with "normal" and "abnormal" congenital deformities or posttrauma scars. Photographs of adult patients with observable congenital and posttraumatic deformities (abnormal) were digitally retouched to eliminate the stigmatic defects (normal). The normal and abnormal photographs of identical patients were evaluated by the large sample study group on nine parameters of social functioning, such as honesty, employability, attractiveness, and effectiveness, using a visual analogue rating scale. Patients with abnormal facial characteristics were rated as significantly less honest (p = 0.007), less employable (p = 0.001), less trustworthy (p = 0.01), less optimistic (p = 0.001), less effective (p = 0.02), less capable (p = 0.002), less intelligent (p = 0.03), less popular (p = 0.001), and less attractive (p = 0.001) than were the same patients with normal facial appearances. Facial deformity caused by trauma, congenital disabilities, and postsurgical sequelae present with significant adverse functional consequences. Facial deformities have a significant negative effect on perceptions of social functionality, including employability, honesty, and trustworthiness. Adverse perceptions of patients with facial deformities occur regardless of sex, educational level, and age of evaluator.  相似文献

The performance of objective speech and audio quality measures for the prediction of the perceived quality of frequency-compressed speech in hearing aids is investigated in this paper. A number of existing quality measures have been applied to speech signals processed by a hearing aid, which compresses speech spectra along frequency in order to make information contained in higher frequencies audible for listeners with severe high-frequency hearing loss. Quality measures were compared with subjective ratings obtained from normal hearing and hearing impaired children and adults in an earlier study. High correlations were achieved with quality measures computed by quality models that are based on the auditory model of Dau et al., namely, the measure PSM, computed by the quality model PEMO-Q; the measure qc, computed by the quality model proposed by Hansen and Kollmeier; and the linear subcomponent of the HASQI. For the prediction of quality ratings by hearing impaired listeners, extensions of some models incorporating hearing loss were implemented and shown to achieve improved prediction accuracy. Results indicate that these objective quality measures can potentially serve as tools for assisting in initial setting of frequency compression parameters.  相似文献

The present paper is based on the results of a study conducted to investigate whether the relationship between perceived workload and quality of performance, if any, holds true if controlled for shift system, type of task, age, and skill level of the workers. The sample of the study comprised 279 blue-collar workers of a jute industry operating under fixed three-shift system. The subjects were all males selected by random sampling method. The method of data collection was a field study through questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by employing zero-order and partial correlation coefficients. The results indicate that workload and performance were negatively correlated but the strength of the relationship reduced substantially when the effects of the control variables were partialled out simultaneously. It was concluded that the control variables had joint effect on the relationship between workload and performance but skill level of the employees appeared to be the variable having the greatest contaminating effect.  相似文献

Anthropozoonotic (human to nonhuman animal) transmission of infectious disease poses a significant threat to wildlife. A large proportion of travelers to tropical regions are not protected against vaccine-preventable illnesses, and a majority of these travelers demonstrate poor recall of actual vaccination status. Here we characterize self-perceived vaccination status among a large sample of ecotourists at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Sabah, Malaysia. Despite their recognized travel itinerary to view endangered animals, tourists at wildlife sanctuaries are not adequately protected against vaccine-preventable illnesses. Of 633 surveys, over half reported being currently vaccinated against tuberculosis, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, polio, and measles. Fewer participants reported current vaccination status for influenza, rabies, and chickenpox. Despite the fact that the majority of visitors to Sepilok are from temperate regions where influenza is relatively more prevalent, 67.1% of those surveyed with medical-related occupations reported not being currently vaccinated for influenza. Ecotourists concerned about environmental protection are themselves largely unaware of their potential contribution to the spread of diseases to animals. The risks of negatively affecting animal populations must be communicated to all concerned parties, and this may begin by urging travelers to examine their actual vaccination status, particularly as the ecotourism industry continues its rapid expansion, and is seen increasingly as a possible tool to save great ape populations from extinction.  相似文献

Background

How does the brain estimate object stability? Objects fall over when the gravity-projected centre-of-mass lies outside the point or area of support. To estimate an object''s stability visually, the brain must integrate information across the shape and compare its orientation to gravity. When observers lie on their sides, gravity is perceived as tilted toward body orientation, consistent with a representation of gravity derived from multisensory information. We exploited this to test whether vestibular and kinesthetic information affect this visual task or whether the brain estimates object stability solely from visual information.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In three body orientations, participants viewed images of objects close to a table edge. We measured the critical angle at which each object appeared equally likely to fall over or right itself. Perceived gravity was measured using the subjective visual vertical. The results show that the perceived critical angle was significantly biased in the same direction as the subjective visual vertical (i.e., towards the multisensory estimate of gravity).

Conclusions/Significance

Our results rule out a general explanation that the brain depends solely on visual heuristics and assumptions about object stability. Instead, they suggest that multisensory estimates of gravity govern the perceived stability of objects, resulting in objects appearing more stable than they are when the head is tilted in the same direction in which they fall.  相似文献

Numerous researchers have examined the effects of skin condition, including texture and color, on the perception of health, age, and attractiveness in human faces. They have focused on facial color distribution, homogeneity of pigmentation, or skin quality. We here investigate the role of overall skin color in determining perceptions of health from faces by allowing participants to manipulate the skin portions of color-calibrated Caucasian face photographs along CIELab color axes. To enhance healthy appearance, participants increased skin redness (a*), providing additional support for previous findings that skin blood color enhances the healthy appearance of faces. Participants also increased skin yellowness (b*) and lightness (L*), suggesting a role for high carotenoid and low melanin coloration in the healthy appearance of faces. The color preferences described here resemble the red and yellow color cues to health displayed by many species of nonhuman animals.  相似文献

Purpose

Uncertainty analyses in life cycle assessment (LCA) literature have focused primarily on the life cycle inventory (LCI) phase, but LCA experts generally agree that the life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) phase is likely to contribute even more to the overall uncertainty of an LCA result. The magnitude of perceived uncertainties in characterization relative to that in LCI, however, has not been examined in the literature. Here, we use the pedigree approach to gauge the perceived uncertainty in the characterization phase relative to the LCI phase. In addition, we evaluate the level of approval on the pedigree approach as a means to characterize uncertainty in LCA.

Methods

Applying the Numeral Unit Spread Assessment Pedigree (NUSAP) approach to environmental risk assessment literature, we extracted the criteria for evaluating the uncertainty in the characterization phase. We used expert elicitation to identify a pool of experts and conducted a survey, to which 47 LCA practitioners from 12 countries responded. In order to reduce personal biases in perceived geometric standard deviation (GSD) values, we used two reference questions on weight and life expectancy at birth for calibration.

Results

Nearly half (49%) of respondents expressed their approval to the pedigree matrix approach as a means of characterizing uncertainties in LCA, and responses were highly sensitive to the respondent’s familiarity with the pedigree matrix. For instance, respondents who are highly familiar with the pedigree matrix were more polarized, with 15% and 19% of them expressing either strong approval or strong disapproval, respectively. Respondents less familiar with the pedigree approach were generally more favorable to its use. Compared with LCI, variability in characterization factors was influenced more strongly by geographical correlation and reliability of the underlying model, which showed 11 to 16% larger average GSDs when compared with the comparable criteria for LCI. Conversely, temporal correlation criterion was a less significant factor in characterization than in LCI.

Conclusions and discussion

Overall, survey respondents viewed LCIA characterization as only marginally more uncertain than LCI, but with a wider variability in responses on characterization than LCI. This finding indicates the need for additional research to develop more thorough methods for characterizing uncertainties in life cycle impact assessment that are compatible with the uncertainty measures in LCI.
