In order to assess the influence of odors on human performance and implicit memory for odors, 108 subjects completed a variety of tests in weakly scented (jasmine, lavender or odorless) rooms without having been made aware of the odor. After a 30 min interval the subjects were shown slides of different surroundings, including the room they had been in, and were requested to rate how well a set of 12 odors, including a blank, would fit to these surroundings. Half of these contexts contained visual cues related to two of the presented odors (leather and coffee). After the rating of fit the subjects had to rate the odors for pleasantness, were asked to identify the odors with their correct names and to tell where and when they had last smelled these odors. One subject remembered smelling the odor (jasmine) in the room and was discarded from the analysis of the results for the rating of fit. None of the others reported recollection of the experimental odors. The results showed that in general jasmine had a negative and lavender a positive effect on test performance. If an odor-related visual cue was present in the context, the related odor was always rated highest in fit to that context. Furthermore, the subjects working in rooms with an odor subsequently assigned this odor to the visual context of that room to a significantly higher degree than subjects working in rooms with different odors. Since none of the subjects reported that they had smelled the odor in the rooms where performance testing took place, it was concluded that the memory for these odors was implicit. Further analysis showed that such memory was only found in subjects who were unable to supply the right name for the odor. The possible consequences of this latter finding for understanding the relationship between sensory (episodic) and semantic odor memory are discussed.  相似文献

This study explored discrimination differences between various lavender oil blends and their effects on transient mood in the morning and evening in depressed and nondepressed adults. We also determined seasonal influences on these measures. A total of 169 subjects, 98 women and 71 men (mean age +/- SD, 19.3 +/- 1.6 y) participated, with different subjects studied at different times of the year. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) classified subjects as depressed (score > or =10; N= 57) or nondepressed (score <10; N= 112). In the discrimination test, subjects compared pairs of two different lavender oil blends or a control. Transient change in mood was assessed by the Profile of Mood States (POMS) after each trial of five lavender blends interspersed by three control odors. Tests were conducted in the morning (08:00-10:00 h) and evening (18:00-20:00h). In all subjects, discrimination was significantly better for some odor pairs than for others, thus demonstrating test specificity. Discrimination was better overall in the fall than winter/spring and better in depressed than nondepressed subjects for specific odor pairs. No significant gender or time-of-day differences in discriminability were detected. There were, however, significant group differences in transient mood profiles. Current depressed state affected mood response, with lavender increasing anger in depressed subjects only. In addition, depressed subjects and men, whether or not depressed, exhibited diurnal mood variation, with better mood in the evening; the former group also showed more evening energy. All subjects were more confused in the morning than evening. Season also affected transient mood; winter/spring-tested subjects reported more vigor than fall-tested subjects. In addition, summer-tested subjects showed more tension in the morning, whereas fall-tested subjects showed the opposite pattern in the evening. In all subjects, lavender increased fatigue, tension, confusion, and total mood disturbance, and it decreased vigor. The study showed that both chronobiological (seasonal and time-of-day) and clinical factors modify discrimination and mood response to odors. Brief lavender odor presentation may serve as a nonphotic method for altering mood in young depressed and nondepressed adults particularly during the fall, a time of heightened discriminability.  相似文献

Ninety subjects between the ages of 18 and 35 viewed 24 slideswhen the testing room was scented with no odor or one of twopleasant scents (baby powder or chocolate). Six slides wereof babies, six were of chocolate items and 12 were control slidesof pine trees or the Orient. In pilot testing the chocolateslides were rated as being congruent with the chocolate scentand incongruent with the baby powder scent; the baby slideswere rated as being congruent with the baby powder scent andincongruent with the chocolate scent. Subjects viewed the slidesat their own pace while a computer recorded how long each slidewas viewed. During a second viewing, subjects rated the slidesand answered questions about their own mood and health. Congruencydid not play a role in the findings. Pleasant odors had certaineffects compared to no odor (i.e. longer looking time, bettermood and lower hunger ratings), while other effects were relatedto specific odors (i.e. arousal was highest in the chocolatecondition and there were fewer health symptoms reported in thebaby powder condition). These findings suggest that pleasantodors may have some general effects due to their hedonic value,while associations individuals have with particular pleasantodors may influence other variables. The effects of the odors of lavender and cloves on three cognitiveskills—memory, affective reaction to the experiment andmood—of college students are studied in two sessions,separated by 1 week. Essential oils of lavender or cloves werediffused throughout the laboratory, or no odor was presented.In the second session, approximately the same number of subjectsfrom each odor condition of the first session influenced arithmeticreasoning in the first session (3 x 3 factorial design). Lavenderadversely influenced arithmetic reasoning in the first session.At the same time, subjects' affective reactions to the experimentwere more favorable with lavender present, though cloves decreasedwillingness-to-return. In the second session, effects on cognitivefunctioning were not evident, and effects on affect were complex:relative to no-odor controls, groups that had odor in at leastone session expressed negative affect and unwillingness-to-return.Discussion concerned implications for the claim that lavenderis physiologically relaxing, the surprising absence of an effectof an effect of odor change on memory, and possible interactionsof odor and personality factors.  相似文献

Bank voles detect and discriminate other organisms, e.g., predators versus conspecifics, based on olfactory clues like urine, feces, or scent marks. The present field enclosure experiment was set up to determine whether scented food is sufficient for inducing such differentiated reactions in bank voles. Fourteen different odors were tested, divided into four categories: (1) terrestrial predators, (2) avian predators, (3) conspecifics, and (4) neutral origin (human, dog, solvent-treated, and unscented). The odors were extracted with methanol from pellets or feces, or were an artificial substitute. To test the influence of odors on the foraging behavior of voles, artificial food patches containing scented feeders were used. The feeders were cleaned and refilled daily with a calibrated amount of food sprayed with 1 ml of a different odor randomly chosen. The patches were also equipped with monochromatic cameras to monitor the occurrences of voles around the feeders. Both the visits at scented feeders and food consumption were analyzed for each odor. The results show that relative to their foraging activity on unscented food, bank voles significantly reduce it on food scented with odors of terrestrial predators, and increase it in the presence of conspecific odors. Their foraging activity was not affected by neutral scent, nor by scents from avian predators. These results prove that bank voles react to scented food in a way that varies according to the source of odor, even in the semi-natural conditions of an outdoor enclosure.  相似文献

One hundred and fifty-two subjects, divided into eight groups, were exposed to a room with a low concentration of either orange or lavender and to an odorless room. In a careful double-blind procedure, neither the subjects nor the experimenters were made aware of the presence of the odors in the experimental conditions. Later they were asked to indicate how well each of 12 odor stimuli, including the experimental and control odors, befitted each of 12 visual contexts, including the exposure rooms. At the end of this session they rated the pleasantness and the familiarity of the odors, and identified them by name. Finally they were debriefed and asked specifically whether they had perceived the experimental odors anywhere in the building. The results of four subjects who answered positively to the latter question were omitted. The results confirm the earlier finding that non-identifiers implicitly link odor and exposure room, whereas identifiers do not show such a link. It is suggested that episodic information is an essential constituent of olfactory memory and that its function is comparable to that of form and structure in visual and auditory memory systems.  相似文献

The physiological response to seven odors (birch tar, galbanum,heliotropine, jasmine, lavender, lemon and peppermint) was assessedby EEG recordings from 19 scalp loci from 16 young adult females.Topographic maps were constructed from the amplitude spectrain four frequency bands: delta (1–4 Hz), theta (4–8Hz), alpha (8–13 Hz) and beta (13–30 Hz). Eightseconds of representative and artifact-free EEG were selectedfor FFT analysis before onset of odor delivery, and at threetimes after stimulus onset. EEG was also quantified at 30 safter stimulus termination. Subjects differed in their subjective responses to the odors,with the most consistently arousing and strong odors being galbanum,lavender, lemon and peppermint. Heliotropine was notably weak.The most pleasant odors were lemon and peppermint, while birchtar, galbanum and lavender were consistently unpleasant. EEGmap changes occurred in one or more frequency bands in eachsubject in response to one or more of the odors. EEG map changessometimes occurred even with weak odors and even when the subjectseemed unaware of the odor's presence. This was most notablewith heliotropine. Across subjects, the most consistent responses to odors werein the theta band. Analysis of variance confirmed that certainodors caused statistically significant theta increases overthe left anterior group of electrodes. Both right hemispheregroups tended to have significant theta increases. The odorsthat caused the greatest increase in theta were birch tar, jasmine,lavender and lemon. On the other hand, during blank controltrials, theta activity diminished. There was also a significantodor by epoch interaction over the right posterior set of electrodes.Several of the odors caused increased theta at one or more epochs.Lemon caused an immediate increase in theta that abated withtime. Birch tar induced a delayed response that persisted afterthe stimulus was turned off. Jasmine and lavender tended toinduce theta sooner than birch tar, but the effect did not outlastthe stimulus. Increased theta was not associated with EEG signsof drowsiness. We conclude that all odors affected the EEG in at least somesubjects, and all subjects responded to at least some odors.Widespread increase in theta occurred in most subjects duringstimulation with such odors as birch tar, jasmine, lavenderand lemon.  相似文献

We have shown previously that clitoral stimulation (CLS) of female rats induces significant conditioned place preference (CPP), indicating that it is rewarding. The present study asked whether CLS could induce a conditioned partner preference. In the first experiment, sexually naïve females received 10 alternating trials of CLS and No-CLS in the presence of a male rat behind a wire-mesh screen. For one group, CLS was made in the presence of the male scented with almond extract. On alternating trials, those females received sham CLS in the presence of an unscented male behind the screen. The order was reversed for the other group. After 5 trials in each condition, females were placed into an open field with two sexually vigorous males, one scented and the other unscented. Contrary to expectation, females displayed a preference for the male associated with sham CLS. The second experiment examined whether a partner preference could be conditioned by associating CLS with the almond odor alone. A new group of sexually naive females received the same CLS-odor, No-CLS-No Odor pairings as above, but with the odor presented on cotton gauze in the chamber. During the final open field test, those females selectively solicited the scented male. We conclude that CLS that induces CPP also induces conditioned partner preference. However, we propose that CLS in the presence of an inaccessible male created a sexual inhibitory state for female rats.  相似文献

Adult parasitoid wasps can learn to recognize specific resource-based cues, making them adept at locating essential resources within their native habitats. However, relatively little is known about their ability to recognize the odors emitted by flowers and extra-floral nectar glands. A novel test arena mimicking the distribution of nectaries within an umbelliferous inflorescence was developed to measure and compare the responses of two eulophid wasps, Edovum puttleri and Pediobius foveolatus, to nectar-based odors. Although both parasitoid species were able to associate nectar location with the odors emitted by both real nectaries (dill flowers and snap bean stipules) and artificial nectars (1 M sucrose solution scented with banana or lemon food flavoring), the responses of inexperienced wasps to nectary odors differed. While inexperienced E. puttleri displayed little attraction to the odor of either dill flowers or snap bean stipules, inexperienced P. foveolatus displayed a strong attraction to odors of both types of nectaries. However, once it had experienced foraging on either dill or snap bean nectar, E. puttleri responded to those nectary odors as strongly as did P. foveolatus. The responsiveness of both wasp species to the odor of artificial nectar greatly increased after they foraged on sugar solution scented with either banana or lemon odor. That parasitoid wasp species can differ in their ability to recognize food-based cues is of fundamental and applied importance.  相似文献

Exposure of anestrous ewes to a ram or its odor results in the activation of the luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion leading to reinstatement of cyclicity in most females. Sexual experience and learning have been suggested as important factors to explain the variability of the female responses. In experiment 1, we compared the behavioral and endocrine responses of four groups of anestrous females that differed in age (young or adult) and previous exposure to males [naive (no exposure) or experienced (courtship behavior for young and numerous mating for adults)]. Age did not seem to affect the LH response to males or their odor. In contrast, sexual experience was a critical factor: the proportion of females exhibiting an LH response to male odor was significantly higher in experienced than in naive ewes. Sexual experience affected the response to male odor, but did not have an effect on responses to the male himself. A second experiment investigated whether the LH response to male odor could result from an associative learning process. Accordingly, we tested the effectiveness of a conditioned stimulus (lavender odor) previously associated with the male, in inducing the endocrine response. The results indicate that the odor of lavender activated LH secretion only in ewes that have been previously exposed to scented males. This demonstrates that ewes are able to learn the association between a neutral odor and their sexual partner.  相似文献

To evaluate breastfed infants' responses to scented objects, we videotaped the facial and bodily reactions of sixty-three infants as they explored, in succession, three toys that were identical in appearance but different in their characteristic odor. Two of the toys were scented with odorants previously shown to be transmitted to human milk, one with ethanol and the other with vanilla, whereas the third toy was unscented. Each videotape was subjected to frame-by-frame analysis to measure a variety of behaviors that are considered either to be exploratory in nature in that they lead to perceptual information about the object or to reflect the infants' hedonic reaction. Analyses of these behaviors revealed that the infants looked more and vocalized less in the presence of the vanilla-scented toy and spent less time manipulating the ethanol-scented toy when compared with the unscented toy. Moreover, differential exposure to the odors of ethanol and vanilla, as indicated by differential consumption of alcohol by a parent or use of vanilla-scented product by the mother, was related to differential responses to these odors. These findings suggest that human infants are able to detect and retain information about the chemical features of their environment.   相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate EEG changes in subjects directly after inhalation of essential oils, and subsequently, to observe any effect on subjective evaluations. EEG and sensory evaluation were assessed in 13 healthy female subjects in four odor conditions. Four odor conditions (including lavender, chamomile, sandalwood and eugenol) were applied respectively for each subject in the experiment. The results were as follows. 1) Four basic factors were extracted from 22 adjective pairs by factor analysis of the sensory evaluation. The first factor was "comfortable feeling", the second "cheerful feeling", the third "natural feeling" and the fourth "feminine feeling". In the score of the first factor (comfortable feeling), the odors in order of high contribution are lavender, eugenol, chamomile and sandalwood. 2) Alpha 1 (8-10 Hz) of EEG at parietal and posterior temporal regions significantly decreased soon after the onset of inhalation of lavender oil (p < 0.01). Significant changes of alpha 1 were also observed after inhalation of eugenol or chamomile. The change after inhalation of sandalwood was not significant. These results showed that alpha 1 activity significantly decreased under odor conditions in which subjects felt comfortable, and showed no significant change under odor conditions in which subjects felt uncomfortable. These results suggest a possible correlation between alpha 1 activity and subjective evaluation.  相似文献

Overweight is a worldwide increasing public health issue. Physical exercise is a useful countermeasure. Overweight individuals choose rather low exercise intensities, but especially high exercise intensities lead to higher energy expenditure and show beneficial health effects compared to lower exercise intensities. However, especially in the morning higher exercise intensities are likely to be avoided due to higher subjective effort. Bright light exposure has shown to increase maximum performance. The aim of this study was to investigate if bright light exposure can also increase self-chosen exercise intensity. We hypothesized that morning bright light exposure increases self-chosen exercise intensity of subsequent exercise through increased mood and reduced sleepiness in overweight individuals. In this randomized controlled single-blind parallel group design, 26 overweight individuals (11 males, 15 females; age 25 ± 5.7 years; body mass index 28.9 ± 2.1 kg/m2) underwent three measurement appointments. On the first appointment, subjects performed a cardiopulmonary exercise test to measure maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max). Two days later a 30-min exercise session with self-chosen exercise intensity was performed for familiarization. Then subjects were randomly allocated to bright light (~4400 lx) or a control light (~230 lx) condition. Three to seven days later, subjects were exposed to light for 30 min starting at 8:00 am, immediately followed by a 30-min exercise session with persisting light exposure. Multidimensional mood questionnaires were filled out before and after the light exposure and after the exercise session. The primary outcome was the mean power output during the exercise session and the secondary outcome the rating on the three domains (i.e. good-bad; awake-tired; calm-nervous) of the multidimensional mood questionnaire. Mean power output during the exercise session was 92 ± 19 W in bright light and 80 ± 37 W in control light, respectively. In the multivariate analysis adjusted for VO2max, the mean power output during the exercise session was 8.5 W higher (95% confidence interval ?12.7, 29.7; p = 0.416) for participants in bright light compared to control light. There were no significant differences between the groups for any of the three domains of the questionnaire at any time point. This is in contrast to longer lasting intervention studies that show positive influences on mood and suggests that bright light therapy requires repetitive sessions to improve mood in overweight individuals. In conclusion bright light exposure does not acutely increase self-chosen exercise intensity or improve mood in a 30-min exercise session starting at 08:30. However, regarding the fact that overweight is a worldwide and rapidly increasing public health issue even small increases in exercise intensity may be relevant. The trend toward superiority of bright light over control light implicates that further studies may be conducted in a larger scale.

Ring‐tailed lemurs reside in many animal collections worldwide. Lemur welfare may be a cause of concern due to some captive individuals exhibiting stereotypic behavior. Despite these concerns, there has been little exploration of methods of environmental enrichment for ring‐tailed lemurs. Olfactory stimulation can enhance captive animal welfare by encouraging species‐typical behaviors, enhancing behavioral diversity, and decreasing stereotypic behaviors. We aimed to investigate the effects of olfactory stimulation via lavender, peppermint, coconut, and prey odor upon the behavior of eight captive ring‐tailed lemurs. We exposed the lemurs to six individual odor conditions (odor control, novel object control, lavender, peppermint, coconut, and Morio worms) and observed them for 4 hr a day for 3 days with an intervening period of 4 days between conditions. We recorded the lemurs’ behavior under each condition using instantaneous scan sampling. We found significant effects of olfactory stimulation on the ring‐tailed lemurs’ behavior in the initial analysis but these did not survive correction for multiple testing. Overall, while our findings are suggestive of a general effect of olfactory stimulation on the captive ring‐tailed lemurs they did not indicate a marked influence of olfactory condition. However, further investigation with a larger sample size and more biologically relevant odors may be beneficial to fully examine potential effects of olfactory stimulation in captive lemurs.  相似文献

Antarctic procellariiform seabirds forage over vast stretches of open ocean in search of patchily distributed prey resources. These seabirds are unique in that most species have anatomically well-developed olfactory systems and are thought to have an excellent sense of smell. Results from controlled experiments performed at sea near South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic indicate that different species of procellariiforms are sensitive to a variety of scented compounds associated with their primary prey. These include krill-related odors (pyrazines and trimethylamine) as well as odors more closely associated with phytoplankton (dimethyl sulfide, DMS). Data collected in the context of global climatic regulation suggest that at least one of these odors (DMS) tends to be associated with predictable bathymetry, including upwelling zones and seamounts. Such odor features are not ephemeral but can be present for days or weeks. I suggest that procellariiforms foraging over vast distances may be able to recognize these features reflected in the olfactory landscape over the ocean. On the large scale, such features may aid seabirds in navigation or in locating profitable foraging grounds. Once in a profitable foraging area, procellariiforms may use olfactory cues on a small scale to assist them in locating prey patches.  相似文献

Several variables lead to changes in human and animal eating behaviour and food choices. A pivotal role is played by food palatability, represented by food, smell, taste, texture, appearance and temperature. The aim of our study is to assess the potential differences in palatability and digestibility of four different flavoured iced desserts, consumed at the end of a standardized meal, and their impact on the emotional status of 60 healthy volunteers. Sixty healthy volunteers, after ENT and psychological assessment, were asked to fill out a Psycho-Emotional Questionnaire (PEQ) to assess their basal emotional pattern before the consumption of an iced dessert at the end of a standard meal, after which they completed an Organoleptic-Sensory Questionnaire (OSQ), a Dynamic Digestibility Questionnaire (DDQ) and again the PEQ. Four different flavors (lemon, tangerine, pineapple and chocolate) were tested on 4 consecutive days on the same subjects. Most of the 60 subjects, by means of OSQ, found taste, aspect, texture and smell of the 4 flavours pleasant, lemon and tangerine were the freshest and lightest. The DDQ identified pineapple and chocolate dessert as those less digestible. By means of PEQ we recorded an improvement in joy, mood and activation, associated with good data of digestibility and palatability after the consumption of all flavors. Our data showed that all flavors improve joy, mood and activation, after their consumption, without statistically significant differences. However, among the tested flavours, lemon and tangerine appear to be the most pleasant and those which facilitate the digestive process.  相似文献

Tetragonisca angustula stingless bees are considered as solitary foragers that lack specific communication strategies. In their orientation towards a food source, these social bees use chemical cues left by co-specifics and the information obtained in previous foraging trips by the association of visual stimuli with the food reward. Here, we investigated their ability to learn the association between odors and reward (sugar solution) and the effect on learning of previous encounters with scented food either inside the hive or during foraging. During food choice experiments, when the odor associated with the food was encountered at the feeding site, the bees’ choice is biased to the same odor afterwards. The same was not the case when scented food was placed inside the nest. We also performed a differential olfactory conditioning of proboscis extension response with this species for the first time. Inexperienced bees did not show significant discrimination levels. However, when they had had already interacted with scented food inside the hive, they were able to learn the association with a specific odor. Possible olfactory information circulation inside the hive and its use in their foraging strategies is discussed.  相似文献

Olfactory-evoked potentials (OEPs) were recorded monopolarlyat the Fz, Cz and Pz electrode sites in young adults and elderlysubjects with an amyl acetate stimulus presented olfactometrically.Psychophysical odor thresholds for amyl acetate were determinedusing a two-alternative, forced-choice detection procedure.These demonstrated a decreased odor detection sensitivity inthe elderly relative to the young subjects. In accordance withthe threshold findings, elderly subjects produced significantlysmaller N1 and P2 amplitudes, and a trend towards longer latenciesthan younger subjects. Moreover, odor threshold was found tocorrelate with amplitude magnitude. The OEP findings, whichare discussed in the context of previous OEP studies, offerpromise as an objective, non-invasive measure of sensory functionin both clinical and non-clinical settings.  相似文献

Associations between certain odors and for instance health effects may lead to positive or negative attitudes toward these odors. However, in experiments we conducted using the Implicit Association Test (IAT), we encountered attitudes even to odor "words." The IAT is based on the principle that reaction times measuring the association between words from a target dimension (in this case, odor vs. a neutral reference category) and an attribute dimension (i.e., positive or negative words) reflect the attitude to the target, where attitude-congruent associations between target and attribute are reflected by shorter reaction times. In a first experiment, we found distinctly positive attitudes to the concept odor in a student sample, which was replicated in a second experiment. In the main experiment, subjects in the aromatherapy group, who prefer using scented consumer products for relaxation purposes, showed a significantly more positive attitude toward odor words in the IAT than a control group, who did not have such a preference. The fact that results from the implicit test were not always associated with explicitly stated attitudes toward the odor words attests to the fact that the IAT measures the attitude of interest in a different way. As such, the IAT has added value in circumstances where explicit tests can be biased.  相似文献
