The relationships between abundance of the blowfly Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), climate, animal management procedures and the incidence of cutaneous myiasis (blowfly strike) in sheep were examined in three sheep pasture systems in southwest England during the summers of 2002 and 2003. In each year, flies were collected using liver-baited sticky targets, daily weather and routine husbandry practices were noted and the age-class of each animal infested and body position of each strike were recorded. On sites where no strike control was used, 5.8-12.1% of ewes and 5.7-15.8% of lambs were struck. Ewe strikes predominated at the beginning of the season. The incidence of ewe strikes was significantly associated with higher mean temperature, rainfall and shearing; shearing was associated with a 95% reduction in the risk of ewe strike. In lambs, the incidence of strike was significantly related to higher fly abundance, ewe shearing, treatment and mean ambient temperature. Lambs were 4.6 times more likely to be struck after the ewes had been shorn than before; however, the strongest relationship was with mean L. sericata abundance. Average minimum threshold temperatures of 9.5 degrees C for lamb strikes and 8.5 degrees C for all strikes were extrapolated, below which oviposition did not occur. Over 80% of ewe strikes occurred in the breech region in 2002, as did 100% in 2003. However, in lambs both body and breech strikes occurred in both years. The distribution of lamb strikes appeared to change over time, with breech strikes predominating in May, June and July and body strikes occurring increasingly later in the season. The incidence of lamb breech strikes was significantly associated with higher L. sericata abundance and ewe shearing but there was no relationship with weather conditions. By contrast, the risk of body strike in lambs was significantly associated with higher blowfly abundance, higher rainfall and higher maximum temperatures. The relationship between strike incidence and L. sericata abundance is important because it enhances our understanding of strike incidence patterns and management of this disease. Clearly, any factors that facilitate larger L. sericata populations, such as inappropriate carcass burial or increased average ambient temperatures, are likely to increase the incidence of strike.  相似文献

Plasma thyroxine concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay in plasma samples from 691 lactating ewes in 26 areas of New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania. Sheep sampled in New South Wales and Tasmania had significantly lower plasma thyroxine values (4.0 and 4.3 microgram/100 ml respectively) than those sampled in Queensland and Western Australia (5.4 and 5.3 microgram/100 ml respectively). However, sheep in some districts in southern Queensland also had low plasma thyroxine values. The areas where sheep had low plasma thyroxine values correlate well with areas where goitre has been previously reported, both in man and in domestic animals. This suggests that measurement of plasma thyroxine is probably a valid empirical method of assessing the relative iodine deficiency of grazing sheep and further that sheep grazing substantial areas of New South Wales, Tasmania and to a lesser extent Queensland may have thyroid dysfunction of varying degrees of severity. These findings could have implications for animal production in these areas.  相似文献

Sheep blowfly strike (ovine cutaneous myiasis) is a widespread economic and welfare problem in sheep husbandry in many parts of the world. Strike incidence is determined by a complex interaction of fly abundance, host susceptibility and climate, combined with farmer husbandry and intervention strategies. Sheep farmers adopt a range of approaches to the type and timing of the management used for the control of blowfly strike, the rational basis for which is often not robust. Here a deterministic model, based on existing data relating to fly abundance, seasonal risk and strike incidence, is used to compare the variable costs associated with different strike management strategies. The model shows that not employing prophylactic treatment is the lowest cost strategy only where strike risk is low. In all other circumstances, prophylactic treatment incurs lower costs than not doing so, because the deaths associated with strike outweigh the costs of prophylactic treatment. Lamb treatment, in particular, has a substantial effect on strike and cost reduction, since lambs are the most abundant age-class of animals and are at the highest risk over the period when fly abundance is the greatest. Early-season treatment of ewes before shearing is also an important component of the lowest cost strategies, particularly when the blowfly season is extended. While the rational choice of the most appropriate strike management strategy is essential in the context of farm economics, welfare considerations lend added importance to treatment decisions that reduce strike incidence.  相似文献

Several hundred strains of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), isolated in New Zealand from samples of soil and sheep fleece, were tested for toxicity to larvae of the blowfly Lucilia cuprina Wiedemann. Characterization of the Bt strains revealed that three of the more active strains produced Cry1Ba (an insecticidal protein present in Bt mother cell crystal inclusion) that was toxic to blowflies. These strains were evaluated for the ability to prevent experimentally induced fly strike in a bioassay by using first instars. Results with undiluted spore/crystal preparations were variable, but they generally prevented fly strike on sheep maintained on pasture for 3-6 wk. Spore viability was satisfactory throughout the trials and environmental factors (e.g., precipitation and UV radiation) seemed to have minimal effect on persistence. The loss of fly strike protection in these experiments correlated with the movement of spore/crystal toxicity away from the skin as a result of wool growth. Solubilized protein preparations were not as potent as spore/crystal preparations and fly strike protection lasted only from 1 to 3 wk. Vegetative forms of the Cry1Ba-producing strains of Bt did not establish on the fleece of sheep, did not produce significant sporulation, and no protection against fly strike was achieved. Escherichia coli expressing recombinant Cry1Ba protein was toxic to larvae in vitro but did not effectively protect sheep from fly strike because blowfly larvae were able to establish readily 8 d posttreatment. In a single field experiment involving 80 sheep per group, a spore/crystal preparation from a Bt strain expressing Cry1Ba provided less protection from naturally acquired fly strike than afforded by a commercially available dip.  相似文献

The influence of rainfall and initial pasture biomass on growth and dieback of pastures in temporary enclosures over quarterly periods was examined from 1980 to 1985 at Menindee in western New South Wales. Rainfall during the previous 12 months had the most influential effect on biomass of grazed pasture, and accounted for 69% of the variance. During quarterly periods, when the biomass of pasture protected from grazing increased, rainfall accounted for 93% of the variance. For all quarterly periods (whether pasture biomass increased or decreased) current rainfall accounted for 72% of the variance in biomass change (growth minus senescence) and initial biomass accounted for a further 14%. The growth response to rainfall was similar in pastures grazed by a combination of sheep and kangaroos and in those grazed by kangaroos alone.  相似文献

The potential geographical distribution and relative abundance of the Old World screw-worm fly, Chrysomya bezziana Villeneuve (Diptera: Calliphoridae) as determined by climate, was assessed using CLIMEX, a computer program for matching climates. CLIMEX describes the relative growth and persistence of animal populations in relation to climate. The observed global distribution of C.bezziana was compared with the potential distribution predicted by CLIMEX. The differences in the two distributions indicate the areas at risk of colonization, with particular reference to Australia and the Americas. According to the model, the potential area of permanent colonization in Australia extends south to the mid-coast of New South Wales. Comparison of areas suitable for permanent establishment with the potential summer distribution indicates that large additional areas, carrying most of the continent's livestock, could be colonized in the summer months. Seasonal population growth indices are presented for three ports in Australia at which screw-worm fly specimens have been collected by quarantine authorities. They indicate the relative risk associated with introductions at different places in different seasons and so provide valuable planning information for quarantine authorities. The CLIMEX predictions for C.bezziana in North America are shown to be similar to the recorded distribution limits of the New World screw-worm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). The fly could also colonize South America, as far south as southern Brazil and midway through Argentina.  相似文献

Abstract.  The methods used for the control of sheep blowfly strike (ovine cutaneous myiasis) and the farm management factors associated with strike prevalence were examined using data from questionnaire survey returns provided by 966 sheep farmers in Great Britain, based on the period between March 2003 and February 2004. Overall, 91% of participants treated prophylactically with insecticides against blowfly strike; 39% treated twice and 11% treated more than three times in the year. Insect growth regulators (IGRs) were the most commonly chosen product (40%), especially the IGR cyromazine. Only 12% of farmers opted to dip their sheep in organophosphate insecticide against fly strike and 2% of farmers reported applying inappropriate products against strike to their sheep, such as ivermectin or 'drenches'. Farmers worming their ewes more often were 0.8 times less likely to report blowfly strike, but those who wormed their lambs more often were 1.2 times more likely to report strike. Pure-breed flocks were 0.7 times less likely to record an outbreak of blowfly strike than cross-breed flocks. Strike was less likely in ewe flocks grazed at higher altitude; however, this relationship with altitude was not seen in lambs. The results show that insecticides remain the primary tool used by almost all farmers to prevent strike and that the type of insecticides used and means of application have altered dramatically over the past 15 years. However, the prevalence of strike has remained almost unchanged over this period. Clearly careful attention to the type and timing of insecticide application, in association with a detailed understanding of the husbandry factors that predispose sheep to higher strike risk, is essential to allow the optimal management of strike problems.  相似文献

Abstract. In order to develop and evaluate control strategies for blowfly strike, a greater understanding of the epidemiology is essential. A postal survey of sheep farmers yielded information about ten farm and management factors and their relationship to blowfly strike prevalence. The risk of a farm reporting at least one case of blowfly strike increased as flock size and stocking density increased (adjusted odds ratio of 1.13 for an increase in flock size of 100 sheep and 1.38 for an increase in stocking density of ten sheep per hectare). As farm altitude increased, the risk of blowfly strike decreased (adjusted odds ratio 0.67 for an increase in farm altitude of 100 m). The risk of high strike prevalence (more than 2% of sheep struck) decreased as both farm altitude and flock size increased. High strike prevalence was also associated with on-farm sheep carcase disposal (odds ratio 1.35). Farmers in the south-west of England were more likely to report at least one case of blowfly strike and high strike prevalence compared to all other regions.  相似文献

The presence of the South American pasture beetle Plectris aliena Chapin in Australia near Casino, New South Wales, is reported.
Characters of use in distinguishing the adult and larval stages from those of native scarabaeids are described. The bionomics, ecology, and potential importance of the species are discussed.
It is concluded that P. aliena is a species of humid-temperate climates where it appears to be restricted to light sandy soils. The larvae may damage the roots of grasses and crops.  相似文献

Cutaneous myiasis in sheep arising from the activity of Lucilia cuprina larvae can result in significant physiological changes in susceptible animals. The stress imposed on the pituitary-adrenal axis of the sheep in response to myiasis and acute restraint is the subject of this investigation. Merino wethers were exposed to handling restraint, and blood sampling, during examination for blowfly strike; where necessary, they were treated for cutaneous myiasis. Significant changes in the plasma concentrations of immunoreactive beta-endorphin (beta-EP), ACTH and cortisol were found in sheep with extensive myiasis, as compared with unstruck sheep or those with only localized myiasis. In five susceptible sheep with extensive cutaneous myiasis, mean plasma levels of beta-EP, ACTH and cortisol were 307 +/- 71 pg ml-1, 953 +/- 58 pg ml-1 and 232 +/- 46 nmol l-1 respectively, compared with 818 +/- 89 pg ml-1, 641 +/- 41 pg ml-1 and 107 +/- 17 nmol l-1 in six unstruck sheep handled similarly. Whereas significant increases in plasma ACTH and cortisol can result from pituitary-adrenal responses to acute emotional or surgical stress, and are usually accompanied by a concomitant release of beta-EP from the pituitary, the present findings indicate a marked reduction in beta-EP levels and a significant increase in ACTH and cortisol in sheep following blowfly strike and acute handling restraint. This result suggests that cutaneous myiasis in susceptible sheep can alter the pituitary-adrenal response to acute restraint stress, and this could occur either by an alteration of precursor processing in the pituitary or by the selective release of ACTH.  相似文献

Abstract The potential distribution of the herbaceous weed Senecio madagascariensis Poir. (fireweed) in Australia was estimated using the Bioclimate Prediction System, BIOCLIM. Climate profiles for S. madagascariensis predicted that suitable areas occurred only in the south-eastern region of Australia. Its potential to spread outside these areas was assessed by comparing the present African and South American distributions of this species with that observed in Australia. The rate of spread of S. madagascariensis in New South Wales was exponential, although in some regions, such as the Gloucester River Valley, the rates had decreased because all farms had become infested. The results indicate that S. madagascariensis may spread and increase in abundance along the far south coast of New South Wales and in south-eastern Queensland. Coastal areas in eastern Victoria and as far north in Queensland as the Tropic of Capricorn may be invaded.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in numbers and body condition of honeyeaters were examined over 2 years in the New England National Park, New South Wales, Australia. Nectar availability measured as inflorescence density and nectar production were also recorded. In the main study site, the abundance of six of the seven most common species of honeyeater was significantly correlated with inflorescence density. However, honeyeater numbers were not significantly correlated with daily energy productivity. Unlike most honeyeater communities, the New England community was dominated numerically by the Eastern Spinebill, the smallest of the most common species present. Among the most common species, the duration of time a species was recorded in the area was negatively, but not significantly, correlated with its size. All species examined showed similar seasonal changes in body condition, with the highest bodyweights and fat deposits recorded in winter.  相似文献

The levels of nematode egg production in goats and the availability of infective larvae (L3) on pasture were investigated on a dairy unit in New South Wales, Australia. The output of eggs by adult goats was always above 300 epg. The profile of the graph of larval availability in herbage paralleled those for temperature and rainfall, suggesting that larval peaks occurred when the temperature and availability of moisture were optimal. The dominant genus was Trichostrongylus, followed by Haemonchus, then Ostertagia. A larger proportion of Haemonchus larvae in the cultures of faeces were collected during the summer months.  相似文献

The effect of transportation and confinement stress on Dicrocoelium dendriticum egg production was investigated. Sheep passing a minimum of 200 eggs g-1 of faeces were selected from a naturally infected flock. A group of six ewes (group A) was transferred to the laboratory premises and kept indoors for 28 days, while another group (B) of six ewes remained on pasture and was used as a control. Faecal examinations and egg counting were performed weekly, on all sheep, from one week before to 28 days after the transportation of the animals. Comparison of faecal egg counts between groups revealed higher (P < 0.01) counts in transported sheep sampled on days 7, 14 and 28 of the trial. Furthermore, egg counts obtained from sheep that were transferred remained consistently high while the ones from sheep that remained on pasture showed significant variation. Therefore, it is concluded that stress-inducing factors, such as transportation and confinement may enhance egg production of D. dendriticum.  相似文献

We present the results of a study on myiasis in Panama during the first years of a Cochliomyia hominivorax eradication program (1998-2005), with the aim of investigating the behavior of the flies that produce myiasis in animals and human beings. The hosts that registered positive for myiasis were cattle (46.4%), dogs (15.3%), humans (14.7%), birds (12%), pigs (6%), horses (4%), and sheep (1%). Six fly species caused myiasis: Dermatobia hominis (58%), Phaenicia spp. (20%), Cochliomyia macellaria (19%), Chrysomya rufifacies (0.4%), and maggots of unidentified species belonging to the Sarcophagidae (3%) and Muscidae (0.3%). With the Dubois index, was no evidence that the absence of C. hominivorax allowed an increase in the cases of facultative myiasis.  相似文献

Abstract
Adult populations of the hairy maggot blowfly, Chrysomya rufifacies were sampled 6 times daily between dawn and dusk on 35 occasions during 1984/85 at Murrumbateman, New South Wales, using wind-oriented fly traps. Temperature, solar radiation and relative humidity explained 74.3, 8.8 and 1.6% of the within-day deviance of catches. Flies did not enter traps unless the temperature exceeded 13°C. Above 13°C, log catch increased linearly up to 23°C and remained constant thereafter up to the maximum temperature recorded (37°C). Catch rates were unaffected either by wind speed or time of day. Weather effects also explained 87.5% of the between-day variation in daily catches. Standardized catches of C. rufifacies indicate that at Murrumbateman, C. rufifacies numbers peak in autumn and that unstandardized data may not truly reflect seasonal changes in fly numbers.  相似文献

Interactions between Oesophagostomum columbianum and Oesophagostomum venulosum were studied by comparing the establishment, development and distribution of each species in single and mixed infections in sheep. The establishment of O. venulosum was reduced by 90 % in sheep previously infected with O. columbianum and by a mean of 50 % in sheep given a simultaneous concurrent infection with O. columbianum. Prior or simultaneous infection with O. venulosum had little or no effect on the establishment of O. columbianum. It is concluded that the increase in incidence of O. venulosum in sheep on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales has been consequent upon but not the cause of the decline in incidence of O. columbianum. The decline in O. columbianum has probably occurred because of a combination of factors including the failure of infective larvae to overwinter on pasture, the use of efficient anthelmintics and changes in pasture composition.  相似文献

Abstract

Between 1977 and 1989 the social wasp Vespula germanicacolonised mainland Australia and became established in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. Accidental transport between towns is the main mechanism of spread. In many towns wasp nests have not been detected until they became widespread; therefore, eradication is difficult Successful eradication has, however, been achieved in many other towns.

Nesting places vary considerably among localities but relatively little among years at anyone locality. Peak wasp abundance occurs between January and April. Control of V. germanica nests costs Australia an estimated $600,000 (Aust. $) annually.  相似文献

Populations of L. cuprina collected from adjacent sheep-grazing areas and rubbish tips in Victoria (Mansfield and Warrnambool) and New South Wales (Lismore) were tested for resistance to the insecticides diazinon and dieldrin. Populations from sheep-grazing areas had a significantly higher diazinon Rop-1 allele frequency than those from adjacent tips with the Victorian populations being more resistant than those from Lismore. Victorian sheep and tip populations had similar gene frequencies at the dieldrin resistance locus, but the Rdl allele frequency was significantly greater in the population at the tip than in the population from the sheep-grazing area at Lismore. The Rdl allele is at a higher frequency in flies from the Lismore area than in Victorian populations. The results at both loci are explained by a balance of selection and gene flow between sheep and tip populations and by selective differences between geographical areas. The exceptionally high frequency of the dieldrin Rdl allele in populations at the Lismore tip may be partially explained by the use of dichlorvos for fly control. Dosage mortality curve and genetic analyses suggest that dichlorvos (an organophosphorus compound) may select at the dieldrin resistance locus. Possible mechanisms for this are discussed. The consequences of genetic differentiation between L. cuprina populations within a region for an autocidal control program are considered.  相似文献

The abundance of wolf spiders (Lycosidae) was measured across woodland–pasture boundaries in the wheat‐belt of New South Wales, Australia, to determine the nature and magnitude of any edge effect. Spiders were collected by spotlighting along sample plots in woodlands located at distances of 5, 20, 35 and 200 m from the edge, and along sample plots in paddocks located at distances of 5 and 20 m from the edge. The wolf spider assemblage changed significantly across the edge, but the difference could be accounted for only by a change between the woodland and the paddock and not by any changes within the woodland at different distances from the edge. Ground cover (wolf spider microhabitat) changed significantly between the paddock and the woodland, but there were no consistent differences in microhabitat with distance from edge within either paddocks or woodlands. There was a significant correlation between an ordination of sites based on spider species abundance and an ordination based on microhabitat variables, suggesting that the wolf spider assemblage was responding to differences in microhabitat. Fine‐scale selection of microhabitat by most wolf spider species was non‐random, with most species preferring locations with grass cover, rather than more open locations. The present study indicates that wolf spiders are mostly unaffected by edge conditions at the woodland–paddock boundary. Accordingly, small and/or linear remnants with high edge‐to‐area ratios may constitute suitable faunal habitat for wolf spiders and perhaps other terrestrial arthropod species, despite the fact that this configuration is unsuitable for many vertebrate species.  相似文献
