Loneliness is a heritable trait that accompanies multiple disorders. The association between loneliness and mental health indices may partly be due to inherited biological factors. We constructed polygenic scores for 27 traits related to behavior, cognition and mental health and tested their prediction for self‐reported loneliness in a population‐based sample of 8798 Dutch individuals. Polygenic scores for major depressive disorder (MDD), schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were significantly associated with loneliness. Of the Big Five personality dimensions, polygenic scores for neuroticism and conscientiousness also significantly predicted loneliness, as did the polygenic scores for subjective well‐being, tiredness and self‐rated health. When including all polygenic scores simultaneously into one model, only 2 major depression polygenic scores remained as significant predictors of loneliness. When controlling only for these 2 MDD polygenic scores, only neuroticism and schizophrenia remain significant. The total variation explained by all polygenic scores collectively was 1.7%. The association between the propensity to feel lonely and the susceptibility to psychiatric disorders thus pointed to a shared genetic etiology. The predictive power of polygenic scores will increase as the power of the genome‐wide association studies on which they are based increases and may lead to clinically useful polygenic scores that can inform on the genetic predisposition to loneliness and mental health.  相似文献

A trademark of eusocial insect species is reproductive division of labor, in which workers forego their own reproduction while the queen produces almost all offspring. The presence of the queen is key for maintaining social harmony, but the specific role of the queen in the evolution of eusociality remains unclear. A long‐discussed scenario is that a queen either behaviorally or chemically sterilizes her workers. However, the demographic and ecological conditions that enable such manipulation are still debated. We study a simple model of evolutionary dynamics based on haplodiploid genetics. Our model is set in the commonly observed case where workers have lost the ability to lay female (diploid) eggs by mating, but retain the ability to lay male (haploid) eggs. We consider a mutation that acts in a queen, causing her to control the reproductive behavior of her workers. Our mathematical analysis yields precise conditions for the evolutionary emergence and stability of queen‐induced worker sterility. These conditions do not depend on the queen's mating frequency. We find that queen control is always established if it increases colony reproductive efficiency, but can evolve even if it decreases colony efficiency. We further derive the conditions under which queen control is evolutionarily stable against invasion by mutant workers who have recovered the ability to lay male eggs.  相似文献

1. Bergmann's rule states that organisms inhabiting colder environments show an increase in body size or mass in comparison to their conspecifics living in warmer climates. Although originally proposed for homoeothermic vertebrates, this rule was later extended to ectotherms. In social insects, only a few studies have tested this rule and the results were ambiguous. Here, ‘body size’ can be considered at two different levels (the size of the individual workers or the size of the colony). 2. In this study, data from 53 nests collected along altitudinal gradients in the Alps were used to test the hypotheses that the worker body size and colony size of the ant Leptothorax acervorum increase with increasing altitude and therefore follow Bergmann's rule. 3. The results show that the body size of workers but not the colony size increases with altitude. Whether this pattern is driven by starvation resistance or other mechanisms remains to be investigated.  相似文献

The proper detection of orthologs is crucial for evolutionary studies of genes and species. Despite large efforts to solve this problem the methodological situation appears unsettled to a large extent and the “quest for orthologs” is still an ongoing task in large-scale genome comparisons. Here, we introduce a simple operational framework for the detection of orthologs and their classification. The operational framework relies on well-established principles, optimizing their implementation for the considered purposes, and chaining components in coherent procedures: 1) We take advantage of the efficiency and simplicity of the Reciprocal Best Hit (RBH) detections, remedying (by design) the drawback concerning the limitations in terms of 1:1 detections. The procedure is based on the partitioning of Reciprocal Best Hits, with the further merging of partitions including members of the same paralogous classes (“SuperPartition of Orthologs” (SPOs)). 2) We then resort to the conservation profiles of the obtained clusters, allowing simple detection of SPOs containing duplicated members. Based on accepted evolutionary principles, such members can be further tagged as in-paralogs (co-orthologs) or out-paralogs.The method is illustrated and validated by extensive genomic analyses. The performances of the overall approach are characterized in global terms for three sets of species (Chlamydiae, Mycobacteria, Aspergilli), showing that at least 75% of the sets of orthologs contain at most one protein from a given species. The sets including more than one protein from a given species are shown to contain in-paralogs in proportions varying from 28% to 58%. The characterizations also show that the large majority of SPOs are associated with ancestral motifs, and accordingly not prone to chaining effects that might be triggered by multi-domain proteins. Further the SPO formulation is compared to other similarity based ortholog detection methods. Beyond core common results, significant differences are observed between various methods, which can be accounted for to a large extent on conceptual grounds, relative to the different merging schemes involved. Such comparisons highlight a major advantage of the SPO approach concerning the proper clustering of associated paralogs, which appear to be often dispatched spuriously into distinct orthologous classes. Finally the perspectives for future applications and elaborations of SPO-based compositional analyses are discussed.  相似文献

Using genetic markers, we tracked the sex ratio behavior of individual females of the parasitic wasp, Nasonia vitripennis, in foundress groups of size 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16. Comparison of 12 isofemale strains extracted from a natural population reveals significant between-strain heterogeneity of sex ratios produced in all sizes of foundress group. Under simple assumptions about population structure, this heterogeneity results in heterogeneity of fitnesses. The strains differ in their conditional sex ratio behavior (the sex ratio response of a female to foundress groups of different sizes). Females of some strains produce more males as foundress group size increases (up to size eight). Females of another strain produce more males when not alone but do not respond differentially to group size otherwise. Females of two other strains show no conditional sex ratio behavior. Females of only two strains behave differently in foundress groups of size 8 and 16. Correlation and regression analyses indicate that the strains differ significantly in their fit to the predictions of an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) model of conditional sex ratio behavior. Such heterogeneity contradicts the notion that females of this species possess conditional sex ratio behavior that is optimal in the ESS sense. The results imply that this ESS model is useful but not sufficient for understanding the causal basis of the evolution of this behavior in this species. This is the first report on the sex ratio behavior of individual females in multiple foundress groups in any species of parasitic wasp. Data of this type (and not foundress group or ``patch'''' sex ratios) are essential for testing evolutionary models that predict the sex ratio behaviors of individuals. We suggest that a test for an ESS model include the answers to two important questions: 1) is the model quantitatively accurate? and 2) is there reasonable evidence to indicate that natural selection has caused individuals to manifest the ESS behavior?  相似文献

Using data from the 1992 NESTOR-survey 'Living arrangements and social networks of older adults' (N = 4494), the aim of the present study is to identify specific categories of older adults who are most vulnerable to loneliness. By looking at different types of partner relationships (first, second, and third marriages; consensual unions; partners who are not household members) and at partner histories (never married, ever divorced, ever widowed, remarried), this study elaborates on previous research which has tended to look only at the presence versus the absence of partner relationships. Findings indicate that different types of partner relationships provide differential protection against loneliness. There appears to be a 'shadow of the past' of a previous divorce or widowhood in second and third partnerships, which accounts for generally higher levels of loneliness. Single men tend to be more lonely than single women. Moreover, there are no differences in loneliness between men who have always been single and those previously married. Among single women, differences in partner history are relevant: never married single women tend to be least vulnerable to loneliness. The differences in loneliness between older adults with different types of partner relationships and partner histories are only partially attributable to network and social participation differences. The latter independently contribute to the explanation of loneliness. The role of non-social determinants (health and socioeconomic position) is also examined. The results underscore the socially isolating effects of sensory impairments. Older adults with functional limitations, and those with visual or auditory problems tend to be more lonely, findings which are only partially attributable to differences in the number and quality of social relationships. Socioeconomic circumstances primarily have an indirect influence on loneliness. Those with higher levels of educational attainment and higher incomes tend to have more extensive social networks and are therefore less prone to loneliness.  相似文献

Loneliness is an indicator of social well-being and pertains to the feeling of missing an intimate relationship (emotional loneliness) or missing a wider social network (social loneliness). The 11-item De Jong Gierveld scale has proved to be a valid and reliable measuring instrument for overall, emotional and social loneliness, although its length has sometimes rendered it difficult to use the scale in large surveys. In this study, we empirically tested a shortened version of the scale on data from two surveys (N=9448). Confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the specification of two latent factors. Congruent validity and the relationship with determinants (partner status, health) proved to be optimal. The 6-item De Jong Gierveld scale is a reliable and valid measuring instrument for overall, emotional and social loneliness, which is suitable for large surveys.  相似文献

Background

Despite recognized vulnerability of female sex workers (FSW), most data on this population are focused on their HIV and STI prevalence; studies on their experience of partner violence and psychosocial distress are limited, especially FSW in China.

Methods and Findings

A cross-sectional survey was administered among 1,022 FSW recruited from 9 different types of commercial sex venues in Southwest China. Partner violence scales were adapted from WHO''s Women''s Health and Domestic Violence scale and psychosocial distress was measured by five indicators, including alcohol intoxication, drug use, suicidal behavior, depression, and loneliness. Random effects modeling was used to control for cluster effects. Findings: About 58% of FSW ever experienced violence from their stable partners, and 45% suffered it from their clients. Partner violence was strongly associated with each of the five measures of psychosocial distress, even after controlling for potential confounders.

Conclusion

This study is one of the first to examine the association between partner violence and psychosocial distress among FSW in China. The high prevalence of violence experience and distress in this population suggests urgency for intervention. The public health programs targeting FSW should go beyond the focus on HIV/STI prevention and care for the fundamental health and human rights of millions of FSW in China.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To determine if any excess of childhood leukaemia and non-Hodgkin''s lymphoma was associated with certain striking examples of population mixing in rural Scotland produced by the North Sea oil industry. DESIGN--Details were traced for over 30,000 workers involved in the construction of the large oil terminals in the Shetland and Orkney islands in northern Scotland or employed offshore. Home addresses of the 17,160 Scottish residents were postcoded, integrated with census data, and then classified as urban or rural. Rural postcode sectors, ranked by proportion of oil workers, were grouped into three categories with similar numbers of children but contrasting densities of oil workers. The incidence of leukaemia and non-Hodgkin''s lymphoma was examined in these rural (and also in urban) categories in the periods 1974-8, 1979-83 and 1984-8. SETTING--Scotland. SUBJECTS--Young people below age 25. RESULTS--A significant excess of leukaemia and non-Hodgkin''s lymphoma was found in 1979-83 in the group of rural home areas with the largest proportion of oil workers, following closely on large increases in the workforce. The area near the Dounreay nuclear installation, where an excess of leukaemia is already well known, was within the rural high oil category. CONCLUSION--The findings support the infection hypothesis that population mixing can increase the incidence of childhood leukaemia in rural areas. They also suggest that the recent excess in the Dounreay-Thurso area is due to population mixing linked to the oil industry, promoted by certain unusual local demographic factors.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Social control of egg-laying rate in queens of the fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren) was studied by experimental manipulation of the number of larvae, pupae and workers in colonies, and the age and size of larvae and workers. Workers and pupae do not stimulate oviposition by queens. The number of fourth instar larvae, on the other hand, bears a positive log-log relationship to the queen's egg-laying rate. Such larvae are needed both to stimulate and maintain oviposition. Their withdrawal results, within 48 h, in a decline in queen oviposition almost to zero. Their addition to broodless nests results in peak laying in about 4 days. Larvae in the first three stadia and early in the fourth stadium have a much lower effect upon queen fecundity. Sexual larvae are only c. 5% as stimulating on a weight basis, but equivalent on an individual basis. Several associated measures are positively correlated to egg-laying rate: weight of the queen, the number of her vitellogenic follicles per ovariole, total vitellogenic follicles, the time she spends feeding and (usually) the number of workers in the retinue that cares for her. The egg volume is negatively correlated with laying rate, so that queens lay more eggs for the same expenditure of material as laying rate increases. As body size of workers increases, they become less effective in transmitting the larval stimulation to the queen, but worker age has no effect on this ability. For a given number of larvae, queens in small, naturally growing colonies lay fewer, larger eggs than do queens in experimental colonies, but their fecundity increases more rapidly in relation to number of larvae. When larvae are fed vital-dyed food in one experimental colony, and then transferred to an undyed colony, the dye is rapidly transferred to worker crops, and into the queen's eggs, indicating bulk movement of material from larvae to workers to the queen and eggs. Large larvae are more effective at this than small larvae. Fourth instar larvae may be a digestive and metabolic caste that processes protein for egg production by the queen. If that is the case, the queen and fourth instar larvae are linked in a positive feedback loop. Either the logarithmic relation of fecundity to larval numbers or physical limits of the queen may set the maximum egg-laying rate, and thus determine maximum colony size. The data do not allow a clear choice between these alternatives.  相似文献

Summary We studied the effects of intrinsic colony characteristics and an imposed contingency on the life span and behavior of foragers in the swarm-founding social waspPolybia occidentalis. Data were collected on marked, known-age workers introduced into four observation colonies. To test the hypothesis that colony demographic features affect worker life span, we examined the relationships of colony age and size with worker life span using survivorship analysis. Colony age and size had positive relationships with life span; marked workers from two larger, older colonies had longer life spans (¯X = 24.7 days) than those from two smaller, younger colonies (¯X = 20.1 days). We quantified the effects of experimentally imposed nest damage on forager behavior, to determine which of three predicted behavioral responses by foragers to this contingency (increased probability of foraging for building material, increased rate of foraging, or decrease in age of onset of foraging) would be employed. Increasing the colony level of need for materials used in nest construction (wood pulp and water) by damaging the nests of two colonies did not cause an increase in either the proportion of marked workers that gathered nest materials or in foraging rates of marked individuals, when compared with introduced workers in two simultaneously observed control colonies. Instead, nest damage caused a decrease in the age at which marked workers first foraged for pulp and water. The response to an increase in the need for building materials was an acceleration of behavioral development in some workers.  相似文献

An abnormal behavior pattern (covering the eyes with one or both hands) is studied in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). In adults, the eye covering pattern is more frequent and less variable in form than in youngsters; in addition, intermediate forms with play are observed. The frequency of eye covering increases when subjects are placed in an aversive situation (social isolation) and decreases when they perform another behavior (feeding). At the same time, eye covering increases in the evening due to the anticipation of light-dark transition by subjects. The spread of eye covering by way of social transmission is considered.  相似文献

One of Canada''s newest hospices, located in Oakville, Ont., was designed to help dying patients live and die peacefully. Another of its important roles is to help family members cope with the uncertainty and loneliness that surrounds a death in the family. Competitive synchronization among synfire chains may model the dynamics of binding and compositionality. Typically, such models require simulations of hundreds of thousands of neurons. Here we show that the behavior of such large systems can be numerically analyzed by representing the neuronal activity in a synfire chain as a wave. The position and velocity of waves are the only parameters needed to represent the neural activity within a synfire chain. With this wave model we describe how waves are generated, decay, interact within a single chain and among chains. The behavior of the wave model is compared to the behavior of detailed simulations of synfire chains with no qualitative difference. We show that interacting waves tend to become locked to each other (wave synchronization). Finally we prove that: (1) Within a system of many synfire chains with symmetric interchain connections, as long as waves do not fade away or become fully synchronized, the total synchrony among waves can only increase (or stay constant), but never decrease. (2) A wave that increases its speed during the synchronization process becomes more stable.  相似文献

In eusocial Hymenoptera species, females variably develop into either alate females (queens) or workers, and in most cases, caste differentiation is determined environmentally. Recently, however, female castes in two harvester ant species, Pogonomyrmex rugosus and P. barbatus, were found to be determined genetically in hybrid zones of these two species. In the hybrid populations, homozygous females (e.g. AA or BB) and heterozygous females (AB) develop into alate females and workers, respectively. This genetic caste determination system is called symmetric social hybridogenesis (SSH). It is clear that populations with SSH can persist only if all four genotypes (AA and BB females, and A and B males) coexist simultaneously. However, it is not obvious that these populations are always persistent when the four genotypes simultaneously exist. Here, we examined the stability and persistence of an SSH population using a simple mathematical model. According to the analysis of the model, the SSH population persists only when some conditions are satisfied: (1) each female mates with more than two males, and (2) male production increases less steeply than linearly with increasing numbers of workers in a colony, and alate female production increases more steeply than linearly with increasing numbers of workers, or (2') male production increases more steeply than linearly with increasing numbers of workers in a colony, and alate female production increases much more steeply than male production. Therefore, it is not obvious that SSH populations are maintained and are stable for long periods. We discuss whether these conditions are satisfied in real SSH populations.  相似文献

Introduction

Elderly people are one of the most vulnerable groups in the population as regards loneliness, especially among those living alone. This paper aims to assess the impact of the feeling of loneliness on the elderly, taking into account that the loss of a spouse is the main reason that triggers this feeling.

Material and methods

Findings are presented from a qualitative study conducted in Spain. Data were gathered using a focus group approach (8 focus groups, differentiated by gender and place of residence). The data were analysed from a Grounded Theory perspective.

Results

Elderly people describe how they experience the feeling of loneliness after becoming widowed. The loss of the spouse brings an emotional vacuum that is impossible to be filled, especially at night. After long-lasting marriages, these older people are confronted with loneliness, both in the home and internally, which very often triggers depressive disorders. As regards health, 2 types of feelings were observed. On the one hand, there is helplessness for fear of accidents or unexpected illnesses when alone at home. On the other hand, they feel uncertainty about the future, as they wonder who will look after them in case of need. Both feelings contribute to activate loneliness.

Conclusions

Our findings add to the available knowledge about the close relationship between loneliness, widowhood, and health in old age, and provide qualitative knowledge to supplement what we already know about that relationship through surveys and other quantitative techniques used in social research.  相似文献

Summary We traced the development in the laboratory of 18 young colonies of the arboricolous ponerine antEctatomma tuberculatum. Colony foundation is of the partially-claustral type. During the early stages, when the colony is entirely dependent on the queen's behavior, the growth of the colony in terms of number of workers produced over time was relatively predictable. Afterwards, divergence in colony growth in function of the time increases as fast as the number of workers influences the efficiency of colony provisioning.Comparative analysis indicated clear changes in the predation behavior of foundresses and workers as colonies developed. For any stage of colony growth, all individuals provisioned the nest with dead prey or sugar-rich substances in the same way. However, prey hunting involves two different strategies. Foundresses and nanitic workers (originating from colonies with 9–15 workers) foraged actively, catching prey as the result of random encounters. Post-nanitic foragers (originating from colonies with 20–30 workers) and those from nature colonies developed an ambush strategy. Workers in these colonies gained experience at catching and handling prey during a period when they acted as nest guards, and so tended to be more efficient hunters than poorly experienced foundresses or nanitic foragers. The change in strategy was also positively correlated with an increase in the size of workers as the colony matured. A stable maximum in workers size is apparently reached only after the appearance of efficiently hunting foragers, presumably in numbers sufficient to provide adequate quantity and quality of larval food. Such a correlation between worker size and colony growth, assumed general for all ants, has not been demonstrated for Ponerinae before this work.  相似文献

Farmer''s lung is a serious disabling pulmonary disease found in agricultural workers. The disease is believed to be a hypersensitivity to the thermophilic actinomycetes, principally Thermopolyspora polyspora. This organism is difficult to stain with the usual bacteriological stains and thus far has not been demonstrated in the lung tissue by microscopic methods. In this paper, it is demonstrated that the fluorescent-antibody technique is a simple method for the positive identification of T. polyspora. The technique can also be used as a rapid screening test for the detection of antibodies to T. polyspora in the patient''s serum. In addition, it opens up the possibility of the identification of T. polyspora in the lung tissue of patients with farmer''s lung and makes available a means for the study of the immunological reaction in the lung parenchyma. No false positive or cross-reactions with Thermoactinomyces vulgaris or Streptomyces griseus could be demonstrated.  相似文献

Climate forecasts project further increases in extremely high‐temperature events. These present threats to biodiversity, as they promote population declines and local species extinctions. This implies that ecological communities will need to rely more strongly on recovery processes, such as recolonization from a meta‐community context. It is poorly understood how differences in extreme event intensity change the outcome of subsequent community reassembly and if such extremes modify the biotic environment in ways that would prevent the successful re‐establishment of lost species. We studied replicated aquatic communities consisting of algae and herbivorous rotifers in a design that involved a control and two different heat wave intensity treatments (29°C and 39°C). Animal species that suffered heat‐induced extinction were subsequently re‐introduced at the same time and density, in each of the two treatments. The 39°C treatment led to community closure in all replicates, meaning that a previously successful herbivore species could not re‐establish itself in the postheat wave community. In contrast, such closure never occurred after a 29°C event. Heat wave intensity determined the number of herbivore extinctions and strongly affected algal relative abundances. Re‐introduced herbivore species were thus confronted with significantly different food environments. This ecological legacy generated by heat wave intensity led to differences in the failure or success of herbivore species re‐introductions. Reassembly was significantly more variable, and hence less predictable, after an extreme heat wave, and was more canalized after a moderate one. Our results pertain to relatively simple communities, but they suggest that ecological legacies introduced by extremely high‐temperature events may change subsequent ecological recovery and even prevent the successful re‐establishment of lost species. Knowing the processes promoting and preventing ecological recovery is crucial to the success of species re‐introduction programs and to our ability to restore ecosystems damaged by environmental extremes.  相似文献

BackgroundPublished information on snakebite is rare in Bhutan although remarkably higher number of snakebites and associated deaths are reported from other South Asian countries.Aims and methodologyStructured questionnaire was used to collect knowledge of health workers in snakebite management and health seeking behavior of snakebite victims as observed by health workers. Study was conducted in purposively sampled 10 Dzongkhags (district level administrative units) with higher incidence of snakebites.ResultHeath workers scored 27–91% (with an average of 63%, SD = 14) for 52 questions related to snake identification and snakebite management. Among 118 health workers interviewed, 23% had adequate knowledge on snakes and snakebite management while 77% had inadequate knowledge. Among 32 Doctors, 63% of them scored above or equal to 75%. Health workers from Sarpang scored higher (76%, SD = 11) than those from other Dzongkhags. Snakebite victim''s visit to local (traditional) healers prior to seeking medical help from hospital was observed by 75 (63%) health workers. Fifty one percent of health workers observed patients treated with local methods such as the use of black stone called Jhhar Mauro (believed to absorb snake venom), application of honey, rubbing of green herbal paste made up of Khenpa Shing (Artemisia myriantha Wallich ex Besser var. paleocephala [Pamp] Ling) and consumption of fluid made up of Neem leaf (Azadirachta indica Juss). Use of tight tourniquet as a first aid to snakebite was observed by 80% of the health workers.ConclusionHealth workers lack confidence in snakebite management. Snakebite victims are likely to suffer from harmful local practices and traditional beliefs on local treatment practices. Empowering health workers with adequate knowledge on snakebite management and making locals aware in pre-hospital care of snakebites are needed to improve the pre- and in-hospital management of snakebite in Bhutan.  相似文献
