OBJECTIVE: To determine the morphometric characteristics of nuclei and silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) on cytologic imprints and their value in differential cytodiagnosis of benign, atypical proliferative (borderline) and malignant ovarian mucinous tumors. STUDY DESIGN: Forty-six mucinous ovarian tumor imprints (16 benign, 15 borderline, 15 malignant), were analyzed. Nuclear area, outline, "shape factor" and "form factor" were measured on Papanicolaou-stained smears. AgNOR quantification included 7 variables related to the number and area of single, cluster, total and relative AgNOR content per nucleus and the size distribution of AgNORs. RESULTS: Nuclear area and shape factor allowed distinguishing borderline and malignant tumors. The nuclear area in benign tumors was larger than that in borderline tumors; malignant tumors had the highest values. Single and cluster AgNORs were statistically significantly different in borderline tumors compared with malignant tumors, except for the cluster AgNOR area. The total AgNOR area, number and relative area increased from benign through malignant tumors, with statistically significant differences among all groups. By AgNOR size distribution, small AgNORs discriminate malignant from borderline and benign tumors. CONCLUSION: Combining nuclear morphometry and AgNOR analysis on cytologic imprints could be a diagnostically useful method in the assessment of mucinous ovarian tumors.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To test the value of the silver staining nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) technique on canine mammary gland tumors using image analysis and to estimate differences in AgNOR parameters in structurally different parts of canine mammary gland tumors. STUDY DESIGN: Analysis was performed on 13 complex type and 10 simple type malignant canine mammary gland tumors containing tubular and/or papillary structures. Ten normal mammary glands were used as controls. Morphometric analysis was done by a computer-assisted image analysis system and consisted of evaluation of nuclear area, number and area of AgNORs per nuclear area, ratio of nuclei with five or more AgNORs, nuclear perimeter, area fraction between nuclear area and area of AgNORs, and area, equivalent diameter, volume equivalent sphere, perimeter and circularity of a singular AgNOR. RESULTS: Distinct differences were detected between normal and malignant mammary gland tissue for all measured parameters. There were no significant differences between the tubular and papillary parts of the same tumor or between the tubular and papillary parts of complex and simple type tumors. CONCLUSION: Despite the fact that no significant differences were found for AgNOR parameters between papillary and tubular structures of mammary gland tumors, the results of grouping tumors by the number of AgNORs indicate that this might help with classification of canine mammary gland tumors.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To analyze nuclear image morphometry in fine needle aspiration cytology smears of different groups of malignant round cell tumors (MRCTs) to evaluate its diagnostic role. STUDY DESIGN: In this study there were 55 cases of MRCT, consisting of 18 Ewing's sarcoma (EW), 10 neuroblastoma (NB), 5 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), 6 rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), 4 peripheral neuroectodermal tumor (PNET), 8 Wilm's tumor (WT), 2 retinoblastoma (RB) and 2 undifferentiated round cell tumor (URCT). A Leica image cytometer with Quantimet 600 software (Leica, Cambridge, U.K) was used to measure nuclear area, nuclear diameter, nuclear perimeter, nuclear convex perimeter (CP), nuclear roundness and nuclear convex area on hematoxylin and eosin-stained cytologic smears. At least 100 cells were studied in each case. RESULTS: The RB group of tumors showed the highest mean nuclear area (NA), convex area (CA), CP, diameter (D), perimeter (P) and roundness (R). RMS had the highest mean CA, and URCT had the highest mean roundness. ANOVA was performed on the tumors and showed significant differences for all the variables in all the groups (P < .000). All the morphometric data (except roundness) were significantly different in RMS versus all other MRCTs except RB. Similarly, morphometric data on WT were also significantly different from that on NHL. Most of the morphometric data (except CA and R) showed significant differences between RB and all other MRCTs except RMS. PNET, EW and NB could not be differentiated with those variables. CONCLUSION: RMS and RB could successfully be differentiated from all other MRCTs with the help of morphometry. It was not possible to differentiate RMS and RB by image cytometry (ICM) since the ICM data overlapped in those two groups. It was possible to differentiate WT and NHL with ICM. Nuclear ICM was not significantly different in the NB, PNET and ES groups, and probably ICM would not be very helpful to differentiate these groups of MRCT.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether morphometrical analysis can be of diagnostic value for canine acanthomatous ameloblastoma. We calculated, by means of an automated image analyser, some morphometric nuclear parameters, in particular: mean nuclear area (MNA), mean nuclear perimeter (MNP), maximum and minimum diameters (MDx and MDm) coefficient of variation of the nuclear area (NACV), largest to smallest dimension ratio (LS ratio), and form factor (FF), in 8 canine acanthomatous ameloblastomas, and we compared these morphometric data to those of 13 squamous cell carcinomas of canine gingiva. The results indicated a progressive increase of the MNA, NACV, MNP and MDm proceeding from acanthomatous ameloblastomas (MNA: 42.11+/-8.74; NACV: 28,36+/-7,23; MNP: 24.18+/- 2.68; MDm: 5.69+/-0.49) to squamous cell carcinomas (MNA:49,69+/-9,10; NACV: 30,89+/-7,75; MNP: 25.63+/-2.54; MDm: 6.64+/-0.73). On the contrary, the LS ratio and the FF resulted greater in acanthomatous ameloblastomas (LS ratio: 1,63+/-0,12; FF: 1,13+/-0,002) than in SCCs (LS ratio: 1,40+/-0,12; FF:0.91+/-0.38). Moreover, the MNA, MNP,MDx and MDm resulted similar (MNA: p=0.89; MNP: p=0,65; MDm: p=0,16; MDx: p=0,13) in a subset of four acanthomatous ameloblastomas with cellular atypia (MNA:49,01+/-6,88; MNP: 26,28+/-1,99; MDm: 6.08+/-0.41; MDx: 10.18+/-0.88) and in squamous cell carcinomas (MNA:49.69+/-9,10; MNP: 25.63+/-2.54; MDm: 6.64+/-0.73; MDx: 9.26+/-1.05). While the NACV values resulted higher in typical acanthomatous ameloblastoma (29,99+/-6,06) than in atypical acanthomatous ameloblastoma (26,74+/-8,84) and similar to those of the SCCs (30,89+/-7,75). These results seem to confirm that acanthomatous ameloblastoma is a malignant or potentially malignant lesion and emphasizes that nuclear morphometry analysis can be an useful diagnostic and prognostic method in canine oral pathology.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To perform a quantitative analysis to identify which of 7 nuclear morphometry-related variables are of diagnostic value in distinguishing benign from malignant melanocytic skin lesions. STUDY DESIGN: At the Institute of Pathology, University of Nis, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded skin biopsies from 23 cases of benign nevi (18 intradermal and 5 junctional) and 25 cases of primary nodular malignant melanomas were retrieved. Specimens were routinely stained with hematoxylin and eosin and analyzed using a computer-assisted interactive image analysis system. Nuclear area, equivalent diameter, volume of equivalent sphere, perimeter, mean chord, circularity and integrated optical density were estimated after manual editing of binary images. RESULTS: In univariate analysis, 6 features were found to be significantly different between the benign and malignant groups (P < .0001); all measured nuclear variables (except circularity) were higher in malignant melanomas. No significant differences were found among lesions with respect to nuclear shape. Using discriminant function analysis, a correct diagnosis was achieved in 95.8% of benign nevi cases and 84.0% of malignant melanoma cases. The best discriminant variable was nuclear area. CONCLUSION: Image analysis is diagnostically relevant to the evaluation of melanocytic lesions of the skin. The area of the nucleus appeared to have potential for differentiating benign from malignant tumors and can be estimated in the course of routine histology.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To distinguish reactive mesothelial cells from malignant cells in serous effusions using manual and automated methods of enumeration of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs). STUDY DESIGN: In this prospective study, 38 samples of benign (19 cases) and malignant (19 cases) serous effusions were included. AgNOR stain was used in each case along with routine Papanicolaou stain. The smears were examined under an oil immersion objective, and AgNOR dots were counted by direct observation independently by 2 observers. Automated AgNOR counting and morphometry were performed with a Quantimet 600 image cytometer (Leica, Cambridge, England). At least 100 cells were counted in each case. The number of AgNOR dots in individual cells, AgNOR area, nuclear area, AgNOR vs. nuclear area and nuclear perimeter were measured. Data on benign and malignant cells were compared. RESULTS: The AgNOR dots were discrete and smaller in benign effusion cases as compared to coarse and aggregated in malignant effusion cases. In benign reactive effusion cases the mean number of AgNOR dots per nucleus was 2.33 +/- 0.71 and 2.83 +/- 1.15 by the manual and automated method, respectively, whereas that for malignant effusion cases was 7.48 +/- 2.51 and 8.09 +/- 1.69 by the manual and automated method, respectively. Mean total AgNOR areas in benign and malignant groups were 4.77 +/- 2.66 microns 2 and 38.22 +/- 13.71 microns 2, respectively. Mean nuclear area, nuclear perimeter and ratio of AgNORs vs. nuclear area were 48.72 +/- 19.30 microns 2, 24.68 +/- 10.25 microns and .098 in benign effusion cases as compared to 174.25 +/- 82.36 microns 2, 69.03 +/- 27.23 microns and 0.22 in malignant effusion samples. All these values were significantly higher (P < .001, Student's t test) in malignant cells as compared to benign reactive cells. CONCLUSION: AgNOR dot enumeration, AgNOR area and ratio of AgNORs to nuclear area are valuable adjuncts to cytomorphology in differentiating reactive mesothelial cells from malignant cells in serous effusions. Automated AgNOR counting is rapid and less cumbersome.  相似文献

The value of nuclear morphometry in the preoperative fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytologic diagnosis of mammary lesions was investigated and correlated with the lymph node status of the patients. The subjects consisted of four groups of patients: 49 with invasive ductal carcinomas (18 with no positive nodes, 16 with one to three positive nodes and 15 with four or more positive nodes) and 14 patients with benign lesions. The FNA specimens were smeared onto slides and stained by the May-Grünwald-Giemsa technique. The area, perimeter and maximum diameter of 100 randomly chosen nuclei were both measured with the IBAS image analysis system and semiquantitatively estimated with an eyepiece micrometer. For all three parameters, significant differences were found between benign and malignant lesions. The mean nuclear perimeter allowed the morphometric discrimination between all four groups with statistical significance; nuclear area and maximum diameter did not discriminate patients with invasive carcinoma and one to three positive nodes from those with no positive nodes or more than three positive nodes. Morphometry proved to be far superior to eyepiece measurements with respect to accuracy and reproducibility of the results. The results suggest that nuclear perimeter can be used as an additional parameter not only for the FNA cytologic diagnosis of breast cancer, but also for the estimation of patients' prognosis.  相似文献

Computer-assisted sperm morphometry has the potential to eliminate several drawbacks inherent to the current methods of sperm morphology evaluation, and allows for the identification of subtle sperm characteristics which cannot be detected by visual evaluation. In the present study, the Metrix Oval Head Morphology software implemented in the Hamilton-Thorne CEROS (version 12.1; HTR 12.1 Metrix) computer-aided semen analyser was evaluated for canine sperm morphometry and morphology analysis. Comparison of sperm morphometric measurements of 200 spermatozoa from pooled semen samples (n = 4) at 40x and 60x demonstrated a more accurate identification of the sperm head boundaries at a magnification level 60x. Dilution of pooled semen samples (n = 4) to a sperm concentration of 50 x 10(6) ml(-1) allowed for a correct evaluation of the sperm cell dimensions whereas 100 x 10(6) and 200 x 10(6) ml(-1) resulted in a higher percentage of rejected spermatozoa due to overlapping. No differences in morphometric dimensions were found when 100 or 200 spermatozoa were evaluated for each of 15 dogs. The mean morphometric parameters of canine spermatozoa, based on the fresh ejaculates of 23 dogs, were: major 6.65 +/- 0.20 microm; minor 3.88 +/- 0.14 microm; area 20.66 +/- 1.04 microm2; elongation 58.64 +/- 2.58 %; perimeter 17.57 +/- 0.43 microm and tail length 48.93 +/- 10.16 microm. Large variations in morphometric dimensions were detected among individual dogs. After cryopreservation, significantly lower morphometric dimensions were obtained for all the evaluated sperm samples (n = 12). Finally, a correlation of 0.82 (P < 0.05) was established for the percentage of normal spermatozoa assessed by subjective evaluation and by the HTR 12.1 Metrix (n = 39 semen samples). In conclusion, dilution of the semen samples to approximately 50 x 10(6) spermatozoa/ml and an objective lens magnification of 60x, analysing at least 100 spermatozoa, are the technical settings proposed to obtain reliable and objective sperm morphometric measurements by the HTR 12.1 Metrix in canine.  相似文献

This study was designed to compare the performance of the kits Diff-Quick, Hemacolor and Spermac for staining the spermatozoa of rainbow trout. Automated sperm morphology analysis (ASMA) was performed using two image analysis programs to determine the sperm measurements: head size (length, width, area and perimeter), shape (ellipticity, rugosity, elongation and regularity) and tail length. Diff-Quick was found to be the best procedure for staining the trout spermatozoa. The use of this method rendered the highest number of cells correctly analyzed, and provided good colour intensity and contrast of the sperm head. No differences among the methods were detected in terms of tail length measurements. Mean values established using Diff-Quick for the main morphometric variables were: head length 2.93+/-0.13 microm; head width 2.33+/-0.15 microm and tail length 34.16+/-1.66 microm. Based on these findings, we recommend the Diff-Quick staining kit for its accurate and reproducible morphometric results. Notwithstanding, when analyzing the sperm tail of the rainbow trout, the Spermac method offers improved contrast.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the morphometric properties of tumor cells in combination with the expression of 5 immunomarkers, quantitatively evaluated by image analysis, in a series of 60 non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLCs) and to assess their prognostic significance. STUDY DESIGN: Tissue sections from 60 NSCLCs were assessed for the expression of p53, Ki-67, bcl-2, bax and FasL using immunohistochemistry and antibodies. Correlations between morphometric features and clinicopathologic variables, including overall survival and the expression of the above markers, were statistically investigated. RESULTS: Major and minor axis nuclear values, as well as nuclear area and perimeter values, were positively interrelated. No statistically significant correlations were observed between nuclear morphometry and any of the clinicopathologic parameters. p53 Accumulation, when quantitatively estimated, displayed a positive correlation with major axis (P = .008), minor axis (P = .06), nuclear perimeter (P = .006) and mainly nuclear area values (P = .003). Bcl-2- and bax-quantified immunostaining demonstrated a weak negative correlation with shape factor values (P = .039 and P = .025, respectively). Univariate and multivariate analysis showed that stage was the only significant predictor of survival in all patients. In univariate statistical analysis there was a trend between worse survival and shape factor values < 0.8 (P = .0791); this trend almost reached statistical significance in the subgroup of squamous cell carcinomas (P = .0570). CONCLUSION: p53 Accumulation, when quantified, appears to be positively linked with nuclear morphometric values. The prognostic significance of shape factor in NSCLC warrants further investigation.  相似文献

Inflammatory mammary carcinoma (IMC) is the most aggressive spontaneous type of mammary malignant tumor both in women and dogs. Latest studies in dogs indicate that different endocrine mechanisms seem to be involved in inflammatory carcinomas (IMCs). The aim of the present study was to characterize the steroid hormone profile of inflammatory carcinoma, and to compare it with mammary dysplasias, benign tumors and other malignant tumors. Eighty-six mammary samples (10 normal mammary tissue, 21 dysplasias, 26 benign, 22 malignant, and 7 IMC) from 30 female dogs were used. Hormone levels of progesterone (P4), 17beta-estradiol (E2), androstenedione (A4), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and estrone sulphate (E1SO4) in tissue homogenates were measured by enzyme immunoassays (EIAs) techniques, previously validated for this species. IMC displayed the following steroid profile: P4: 13.80+/-0.56 microg/g; E2: 675.19+/-33.00 ng/g; A4: 631.73+/-70.73 microg/g; DHEA: 702.22+/-89.93 microg/g, and E1SO4: 2.84+/-0.32 mg/g. All of these hormones were significantly higher (P<0.001) compared with the hormone steroid profile determined for malignant, benign, dysplasias, and normal mammary tissue. The most relevant finding was the increased levels, two or three times, of both DHEA and E1SO4 in IMC respect to other groups (P<0.001). These results, together with the highest immunohistochemical expression of P450scc found in IMC, suggest the hypothesis that an autocrine mechanism could be especially involved in the development of canine inflammatory carcinoma.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the role of automated image morphometry (AIM) in distinguishing infiltrating lobular carcinoma (ILC) of the breast from benign, borderline and infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC). STUDY DESIGN: Only histopathologically proven lobular carcinoma, ductal carcinoma, borderline lesions and benign breast lesions were selected for the study. There were 19 cases of ILC and 30 cases of IDC, 20 cases of benign lesions (fibroadenoma, 18; fibrocystic disease, 1; and fibroadenosis, 1); 10 cases were borderline lesions (mild epithelial hyperplasia, 3; moderate epithelial hyperplasia, 2; florid epithelial hyperplasia 4; intraductal papillary carcinoma, 1). In all cases hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides were used for AIM. At least 100 cells from each case were subjected to analysis randomly with an image cytometer with Leica Quantimet 600 software (Cambridge, England). Nuclear area, diameter, perimeter, convex perimeter, convex area and roundness were measured in each case with random, unbiased selection of cells and 40 x objectives (one pixel = 0.46 microm). AIM data on the cases were analyzed in relation to final cytologic diagnosis. RESULTS: All the nuclear morphometric features of ILC were much lower than those of IDC and borderline lesions, whereas nuclear morphometric data on ILC were only marginally more than those on benign cases. ANOVA showed that mophometric data were significant (P < .05) in all the variables between ILC and IDC. However, there was no significant difference between ILC, and borderline and benign cases. CONCLUSION: Image morphometry may be useful in distinguishing ILC from IDC on cytologic smears. However, morphometric data may not be helpful in distinguishing benign and borderline lesions from ILC.  相似文献

Seven benign and four malignant mixed tumors of the salivary gland, biopsied using fine-needle aspiration, were analyzed using digital image analysis. Mean nuclear form factor, perimeter, and area were significantly increased in malignant cases. Better separation between diagnostic categories, however, was achieved by utilizing the coefficient of variation (CV) within a case rather than mean value. Form factor CV alone divided cases into nonoverlapping diagnostic categories. This quantitative analog of "pleomorphism" provided a useful marker for malignancy in mixed tumors.  相似文献

Fine needle biopsies from 70 patients with prostate carcinoma and 10 patients with benign hyperplasia were used to study area, variation in size and form factors of the nuclei by image analysis. The results were related to DNA ploidy of the cell populations as measured by flow cytometry, cytologic grade and patients' survival. Nuclear area differed significantly between benign lesions and tumors. It increased in diploid low-grade tumors from a normal value of 54.2 +/- 3.1 microns2 to 75.6 +/- 5.3 microns2. In aneuploid tumors with an increase in the chromosome number, the nuclear size further increased to about twice that of benign nuclei. Variation in size also differed between benign and malignant epithelium, with a further increase between diploid and gross aneuploid tumors. While nuclear size and variation in nuclear size made it possible to discriminate malignant from benign lesions, form factor did not differ between benign and malignant lesions. In follow-up, however, none of these factors reached significance for predicting survival.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic effectiveness of cytometric features of DNA microdensitometry, karyometry (nuclear morphometry) and maturation and their combinations in separating benign nevi from malignant melanomas. STUDY DESIGN: Tumor cells were measured from each of the superficial, middle and deep zones of 81 melanocytic lesions using video image analysis for nuclear DNA content, chromatin compactness, and nuclear size and shape variables. There were 27 banal compound melanocytic nevi, 20 dysplastic compound nevi, 10 Spitz nevi and 24 malignant melanomas (MM). Maturation of cells with depth into the dermis was also studied by comparing cells from superficial to deep zones. RESULTS: MM showed distinct characteristics of DNA microdensitometry, karyometry and maturation as compared to all groups of benign nevi. There were overall close correlations between nuclear DNA content variables and nuclear size parameters in the total group of 81 lesions. However, there were fewer significant correlations between the various indices in the group of melanomas alone. Using multivariate discriminant analysis, up to 97% of the lesions could be correctly separated as benign or malignant by a combination of five key microdensitometric, karyometric and maturation parameters. CONCLUSION: DNA microdensitometry, karyometry and maturation parameters have independent abilities in identifying individual malignant melanomas. Coevaluation of various cytometric features and maturation profiles offers better diagnostic ability in separating benign nevi from MM.  相似文献

Twenty-one intradermal nevi were studied by morphometric methods in an attempt to morphologically characterize the two types of nevus cell--epithelioids, type A, and fusiforms, type C--and to quantify the differences between them. Morphometric parameters of the intradermal nevi were compared with similar parameters of melanocytes and melanoma cells so that the maturation rates of the nevi cells could be established and to see if the parameters might indicate the degree of malignancy. Superficial nevus cells were differentiated from deep cells by their larger size and larger nuclear area. Nuclear area appeared to have potential for differentiating benign from malignant tumors. Decrease in cellular area appeared to indicate maturation rather than atrophy. Melanoma cells were differentiated by their larger size. Cell nuclear perimeter appeared to have confirmatory value, while cell perimeter was inconclusive.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the significance of nuclear morphometry in predicting the clinical course in superficial (pTa and pT1) bladder cancer. STUDY DESIGN: The study included 73 patients with superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder who were followed for a median of 21 months (range, 1-90). Nuclear morphometry was performed by a computer-assisted image analyzer system on hematoxylineosin-stained histologic sections and characterized by five nuclear variables: area, perimeter, major and minor diameter, and form factor. Patient charts and microscopic slides were reviewed to record tumor stage, grade and size. Tumor proliferative activity was assessed by immunohistochemical staining with Ki-67 antibody. RESULTS: None of the morphometric variables showed a significant relation to tumor progression and recurrence. Higher values of mean nuclear area, perimeter, and major and minor diameter were significantly related to higher grade and proliferative activity. Mean nuclear area and minor diameter were associated with advanced stage. Of established prognostic factors, only histologic grade was significant in predicting progression. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that nuclear morphometry may be valuable in determining proliferative activity and may be well correlated with histologic grade in superficial bladder cancer. However, like many other potential prognostic factors, it seems to be unreliable in predicting clinical behavior.  相似文献

AIM: The aim of the study was to determine values of a quantitative morphometry analysis of nuclear characteristics and argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) in differential cytodiagnosis of benign, atypically proliferating (borderline) and malignant serous ovarian tumours. METHODS: Cytological imprints of benign (n = 20), borderline (n = 19) and malignant (n = 20) ovarian serous tumours were analysed. A computerized, digital analysis was used to determine morphometric nuclear features, the number and characteristics of single AgNORs, cluster AgNORs, total AgNOR and AgNOR area/nucleus (relative area) ratio. According to their size AgNORs were classified in three categories. A one-way variance analysis and post hoc test (Scheffé) were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The morphometric nuclear analysis showed that benign, borderline and malignant serous ovarian tumours are statistically different (P < 0.001) according to the area and outline, the values being highest in malignant tumours and lowest in the borderline group. Digital analysis of AgNORs in benign, borderline and malignant groups showed that the total AgNOR number increases with progression of the lesion (meaning tumour malignancy) significantly (P < 0.001) between benign and malignant as well as between borderline and malignant serous ovarian tumours (P < 0.001). The progression of the lesion malignancy was accompanied by a significant (P < 0.001) progressive increase of the total and relative AgNOR area per nucleus. The AgNOR size increases from benign to malignant tumours and a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001) was observed in all three groups regarding small and large AgNORs. CONCLUSION: Combining different markers of morphometric nuclear characteristics and AgNOR values could improve differential cytodiagnosis of benign, borderline and malignant serous ovarian tumours.  相似文献

Morphometry was applied to smears of fine needle aspirates from 26 oxyphilic thyroid neoplasms. Thirteen tumors were considered benign as judged from histologic findings and clinical follow-up for 2 to 20 years after the operation. Thirteen tumors were considered malignant histologically; four of these had proven metastases. In each case the mean and standard deviation of the projected nuclear area were calculated from 200 nuclei in the smear. Our results indicate that morphometric estimation of mean nuclear size and/or degree of anisokaryosis is of no practical value in distinguishing between benign and malignant thyroid neoplasms of the oxyphilic type.  相似文献

In addition to the nuclear area and a form factor, four morphometric parameters of nuclear shape (ID, R1, R2 and ND), obtained by the application of the principles of mathematical morphology, were used to characterize the nuclear contours in non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphomas. The values for each parameter were determined in 58 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma categorized according to the Kiel and National Cancer Institute classifications. Small-cell, mixed and large-cell lymphomas could be distinguished on the basis of the mean nuclear area. The shape parameters R1, R2 and ID were efficient discriminators of the large centrocytic (cleaved-cell) lymphomas. Neither size nor shape factors could distinguish between centroblastic and immunoblastic tumors. The good correlation between the morphometric findings and the histopathologic categories suggest that morphometry may provide a quantitative and objective method for grading lymphomas.  相似文献
