The number of microorganisms in the hindgut of dugongs (Dugong dugon) were estimated and their in vitro volatile fatty acid (VFA) production and degradation of eelgrass measured. Scanning electron microscopy showed that some rod bacteria attached to the surface of plant tissue degraded and eroded the cell walls. Number of starch-, lactate-, cellobiose-, pectin-, xylan- and cellulose-utilizing bacteria, sulfate-reducing bacteria and methane-producing bacteria were estimated at 109 ∼ 1010 colony forming units g-1. Microorganisms degraded the cellulose and noncellulolytic components of the eelgrass, and about 47.3% of dry matter was degraded after 36 h in vitro incubation. The total VFA concentration was 10.5 mmol dL-1 at 36 h incubation, which included 55.7 mol% acetate, 18.0 mol% n-butyrate and 15.1 mol% propionate. The gas composition of in vitro fermentation was 68.4% carbon dioxide, 22.2% methane and 9.4% hydrogen.  相似文献

Cultured cardiac myocytes from neonatal rats show spontaneous and rhythmic contractions. The intracellular concentration of free Ca2 +  also changes rhythmically, associated with the rhythmic contraction of myocytes (Ca2 +  oscillation). This study aims to elucidate whether spontaneous rhythmic contraction affects the dynamics of intracellular Ca2 +  oscillation in cultured cardiac myocytes. In cultures at four days in vitro (4 DIV), spontaneous Ca2 +  oscillation was synchronized among myocytes. Treatment of cultures with an uncoupler of E - C coupling resulted in a cessation of the spontaneous contraction of cardiac myocytes, but did not abolish the Ca2 +  oscillation. The intercellular synchronization of intracellular Ca2 +  oscillation persisted, and both the intervals and the fluctuation of the oscillation tended to increase after the termination of rhythmic contraction. The present study demonstrated that mechanical factors associated with rhythmic contraction did not affect the intercellular synchronization of intracellular Ca2 +  oscillation, but possibly contributed to the stability of the oscillatory rhythm.  相似文献

Aims Understanding ecological implications of plant functional traits is helpful in exploring community assembly under different environments of nature and human disturbances, and then to reveal the maintenance mechanism of the ecosystem services. By analyzing vegetation and soil data derived from field observations in Leymus chinensis steppe of Xilin River Basin in Nei Mongol, we aimed to explore the responses of plant functional traits to changing soil nutrients at different degradation stages. Methods We observed 69 plots for both plant community structure and soil attributes using quadrat and soil-drilling methods. Five plant functional traits, namely the specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N), leaf lignin content (LLC), and maximum height (MH), were measured for each plot. We also tested soil attributes, such as total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and organic carbon (OC). The sixty-nine communities were classified into four groups (undegraded L. chinensis + forbs, slightly degraded L. chinensis + Stipa sp., moderately degraded L. chinensis + Cleistogenes squarrosa, and heavily degraded L. chinensis + Artemisia frigida) using TWINSPAN software. The relationships between plant functional traits and soil nutrient variables were analyzed for the four community groups using the Pearson’s correlation test with SPSS 21.0 software. Important findings (1) The soil nutrients decreased with the grassland degradation process and there were significant differences in TN and TP between the undegraded L. chinensis + forbs and heavily degraded L. chinensis + A. frigida communities; (2) plant functional traits also showed strong differences between the degradation stages. MH and C:N decreased with degradation. A significant difference was observed in MH between the undegraded L. chinensis + forbs and slightly degraded L. chinensis + Stipa sp. communities. The difference in C:N was also significant between the undegraded L. chinensis + forbs and heavily degraded L. chinensis + A. frigida communities; (3) the effects of soil nutrients on plant functional traits changed with grassland degradation. AN was negatively correlated with MH, LLC, and C:N in the slightly degraded L. chinensis + Stipa sp. community. In the moderately degraded L. chinensis + C. squarrosa community, those three traits mentioned above showed significantly positive correlations with TP; (4) while analyzing the degraded grassland, different relationships between plant functional traits were found. In the slightly degraded L. chinensis + Stipa sp. community, LLC was positively correlated with all other traits. Moreover, positive correlations also occurred between C:N and MH, C:N and LDMC, and C:N and LLC. In the heavily degraded L. chinensis + A. frigida community, all traits demonstrated the most significantly positive correlations.  相似文献

Extensive biodegradation of hexahydro-1,3,5 -trinitro-1,3,5 -triazine (RDX) by the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium in liquid and solid matrices was observed. Some degradation in liquid occurred under nonligninolytic conditions, but was approximately 10 times higher under ligninolytic conditions. Moreover, elimination was accounted for almost completely as carbon dioxide. No RDX metabolites were detected. The degradation rates in liquid appeared to be limited to RDX concentration in solution (approximately 80 mg/L), but degradation rates in soil were nonsaturable to 250 mg/kg. Manganese-dependent peroxidase (MnP) and cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) from P. chrysosporium, but not lignin peroxidase, were able to degrade RDX. MnP degradation of RDX required addition of manganese, but CDH degraded RDX anaerobically without addition of mediators. Attempts to improve biodegradation by supplementing cultures with micronutrients showed that addition of manganese and oxalate stimulated degradation rates in liquid, sawdust, and sand by the fungus, but not in loam soil. RDX degradation by P. chrysosporium in sawdust and sand was better than observed in liquid. However, degradation in solid matrices by the fungus only began after a lag period of 2 to 3 weeks, during which time extractable metabolites from wood were degraded.  相似文献

深入认识植物功能性状的生态学含义, 对于阐明不同自然与人为干扰环境下的群落构建途径, 进一步揭示生态系统服务维持机制具有重要的理论意义。该文以内蒙古锡林河流域羊草(Leymus chinensis)草原不同退化演替阶段的群落为研究对象, 分析了土壤养分与植物功能性状的变化特征及两者之间的关系。结果表明: (1)退化导致土壤养分含量逐渐减少, 全氮和全磷在未退化的羊草+杂类草群落与严重退化的羊草+冷蒿(Artemisia frigida)群落之间差异显著; (2)随着退化演替的进程, 群落最大高度和叶片碳氮比减小, 群落最大高度在未退化的羊草+杂类草群落与轻度退化的羊草+针茅(Stipa sp.)群落之间差异显著, 碳氮比在未退化的羊草+杂类草群落与严重退化的羊草+冷蒿群落之间差异显著; (3)不同退化演替阶段的群落, 其土壤养分对植物功能性状的影响有所差异。在羊草+针茅群落, 速效氮与群落最大高度、叶片木质素含量和叶片碳氮比均呈显著负相关关系。而在羊草+糙隐子草(Cleistogenes squarrosa)群落中, 上述3种植物功能性状则表现为均与全磷含量显著正相关; (4)群落植物功能性状之间的关系也因退化阶段不同而有所不同。在轻度退化的羊草+针茅群落中, 叶片木质素含量与其他4个功能性状显著正相关, 叶片碳氮比与群落最大高度、叶干物质含量、木质素含量呈显著正相关关系。在严重退化的羊草+冷蒿群落中, 所有性状均呈极显著正相关关系。表明植物通过功能性状的协调或组合, 以适应贫瘠的土壤环境。上述结果深化了对典型草原退化演替的认识, 对退化草地的恢复与保护具有一定的指导意义。  相似文献

The role of microzooplankton in waters adjacent to Australia's North West Cape (21°49'S 114°14'E) was studied during the austral summers 1997/1998 and 1998/1999. We estimated microzooplankton abundance and biomass at a shallow (∼20 m) shelf station and at a shelf break station (∼80 m). Microzooplankton were placed into six categories: four ciliate groups (strombidiids, strobilidiids, tintinnids, “other ciliates”), dinoflagellates, and sarcodines. Total microzooplankton abundances ranged between 0.14×103 l-1 and 3.4×103 l-1. The most abundant groups were the dinoflagellates (mean 459±73 standard error l-1) and strombidiids (mean 334±42 standard error l-1). Total microzooplankton biomass ranged between 0.03 and 1.70 µg C l-1 (mean 0.33±0.05 standard error l-1). Redundancy analysis indicated differences in microzooplankton community composition between stations and sampling years but no differences with sampling depth. The microzooplankton community showed considerable variability between adjacent sampling dates, reinforcing the conclusion of earlier studies that this area is a dynamic environment. Ciliate production on the shelf was estimated to be 1.05 µg C l-1day-1 (∼20 mg C m-2 day-1) and 0.79 µg C l-1 day-1(∼70 mg C m-2 day-1) at the shelf break. Ciliate production near North West Cape was two- to six-fold higher than the rate of secondary production by juvenile copepods. Despite this, ciliate grazing appears to account for only ∼5% of primary production and ciliates do not appear to be a major conduit between primary producers and higher trophic levels in these waters.  相似文献

Background

Sero-prevalence is a valuable indicator of prevalence and incidence of A/H1N1 2009 infection. However, raw sero-prevalence data must be corrected for background levels of cross-reactivity (i.e. imperfect test specificity) and the effects of immunisation programmes.

Methods and Findings

We obtained serum samples from a representative sample of 1563 adults resident in Scotland between late October 2009 and April 2010. Based on a microneutralisation assay, we estimate that 44% (95% confidence intervals (CIs): 40–47%) of the adult population of Scotland were sero-positive for A/H1N1 2009 influenza by 1 March 2010. Correcting for background cross-reactivity and for recorded vaccination rates by time and age group, we estimated that 34% (27–42%) were naturally infected with A/H1N1 2009 by 1 March 2010. The central estimate increases to >40% if we allow for imperfect test sensitivity. Over half of these infections are estimated to have occurred during the study period and the incidence of infection in late October 2009 was estimated at 4.3 new infections per 1000 people per day (1.2 to 7.2), falling close to zero by April 2010. The central estimate increases to over 5.0 per 1000 if we allow for imperfect test specificity. The rate of infection was higher for younger adults than older adults. Raw sero-prevalences were significantly higher in more deprived areas (likelihood ratio trend statistic = 4.92,1 df, P = 0.03) but there was no evidence of any difference in vaccination rates.

Conclusions

We estimate that almost half the adult population of Scotland were sero-positive for A/H1N1 2009 influenza by early 2010 and that the majority of these individuals (except in the oldest age classes) sero-converted as a result of natural infection with A/H1N1 2009. Public health planning should consider the possibility of higher rates of infection with A/H1N1 2009 influenza in more deprived areas.  相似文献

The biological rhythm in activity of the supratidal amphipod Talorchestia longicornis Say was determined under constant conditions. Surface activity was monitored with a time-lapse video system under red light and assessed as the number of animals emerging from their burrows and active on a sand substrate at 0.5 h intervals. The amphipods had a circadian rhythm in which they were active at the time of night at the collection site. The rhythm could be entrained by a light : dark cycle and had an average free-running period of 23.7 h. Activity also appeared to be related to tidal times at the collection site because, under constant conditions, surface activity was suppressed at the time of nocturnal high tide and increased at the time of nocturnal low tide. The rhythm is functionally significant for foraging at night to avoid visual predators, desiccation and high temperatures.  相似文献

Movement in the echinometrid sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus (Val.) was investigated in relation to the availability of a preferred food species, the laminarian alga Ecklonia radiata (C. Ag.). Patterns of microhabitat occupancy, dispersion, and movement were described in two habitats: Coralline Flats, dominated by encrusting coralline algae; and Sediment Flats, occupied by turfing corallines, Ecklonia and the mussel Modiolus areolatus (Gould). In both habitats, sea urchins were positively associated with encrusting coralline algae, despite the fact that encrusting corallines occupied a minor proportion of the substratum in the Sediment Flat habitat. Sea urchins were significantly clumped in both habitat types, and more so in sites within the Sediment Flats habitat. Movement was not directional in either habitat, but the magnitude of movement was almost twice as high in sites from the Coralline Flats habitat, where kelp was absent, as in the Sediment Flats sites, where kelp was present. Behaviour in response to the presence of Ecklonia in both habitats was investigated experimentally. In both habitats, urchins exposed to a “drift” kelp plant at a distance of 1–2 m exhibited net movement approximately twice as great as that shown by control urchins, not exposed to a kelp plant. Despite the relatively small distances the urchins were from the kelp, there was no evidence of directionality in movement. We conclude from the present study that further understanding of the feeding behaviour of urchins requires that a distinction be made between attached and drift algae, and between directionality and magnitude of movement, and that the interaction of these and other factors are best investigated under field conditions.  相似文献

Nitrogen excreted as ammonium, urea, and dissolved primary amines (DPA), and nitrogen ingested by the planktonic calanoid copepod, Acartia tonsa, were measured while fed 4 foods with different N/C ratios in high (500 μg C l− 1) and low (50 μg C l− 1) concentrations. Adult copepods were fed the ciliate, Uronema marinum (N/C = 0.26), the diatom, Thalassiosira weissflogii, in log-phase growth (N/C = 0.20), and in senescent-phase growth (N/C = 0.12), and detritus derived from the saltmarsh grass, Spartina alterniflora, (N/C = 0.04). Total nitrogen excreted ranged from 0.06 to 0.18 μg N copepod− 1 d− 1 whereas nitrogen ingested exhibited considerably more variation (0.01 to 0.39 μg N copepod − 1d − 1). Ammonium was the dominant form of nitrogen excreted and was influenced by both food concentration and N/C ratio. Copepods fed foods with N/C ratios resembling their own body composition (log-phase diatoms and ciliates) excreted more ammonium when fed higher concentrations of food. In contrast, copepods fed foods with lower N/C ratios than their own body composition excreted more ammonium when fed lower concentrations of food, suggesting that they were catabolizing body protein for survival. Excretion of urea varied with food N/C ratio, with more urea excreted when the copepods were fed higher N/C foods. The excretion of DPA did not vary with either food concentration or food N/C ratio. Homeostasis serves to conserve the N/C ratio of copepods. Thus nitrogen excretion by healthy copepods should be expected to increase with ingestion only when copepods have high quantities of nitrogen-rich foods relative to the body composition of the copepods.  相似文献

Aims Subtropical forest ecosystem has great carbon sequestration capacity. Net primary productivity (NPP) plays a critical role in forest carbon cycle and is affected by a number of factors, including climate change, atmospheric composition, forest disturbance intensity and frequency, and forest age, etc. However, the contribution of these factors to the temporal-spatial dynamics of NPP is still not clear. Quantifying the main driving forces on the temporal-spatial dynamics of NPP for subtropical forest ecosystems is a critical foundation for understanding their carbon cycle.
Methods We utilized multi-sources dataset, including observed meteorological data, inversed annual maximum leaf area index (LAI), referenced NPP (simulated by Boreal Ecosystem Productivity Simulator (BEPS) model), forest age and forest types, land cover, digital elevation model (DEM), soil texture, CO2 concentration and nitrogen deposition. We used the InTEC (integrated terrestrial ecosystem carbon-budget) model to simulate the NPP dynamics for forest ecosystems in Jiangxi Province during the period of 1901-2010. The effects of climate change, forest age, CO2 concentration and nitrogen (N) deposition on forest NPP from 1970 to 2010 were discussed through designed scenarios.
Important findings (1) Validations by flux measurements and forest inventory data indicated that the InTEC model was able to capture the interannual and spatial variations of forest NPP. (2) The average forest NPP was 47.7 Tg C·a-1 (± 4.2 Tg C·a-1) during 1901-2010. The NPP in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s was 50.7, 48.8, 45.4, and 55.2 Tg C·a-1, respectively. As forest regrows, NPP significantly increased for forests in Jiangxi Province in the 2000s, and exceed that in the 1970s for more than 60% of the forest area. (3) During 1970-2010, under the scenarios of disturbance and non-disturbance, the forest NPP were underestimated by 7.3 Tg C·a-1 (14.5%) and overestimated by 3.6 Tg C·a-1 (7.1%) compared to the scenarios of all disturbance and non-disturbance factors, respectively. Compared to the average NPP during 1970-2010, climate change decreased NPP by -2.0 Tg C·a-1 (-4.7%), N deposition increased NPP by 4.5 Tg C·a-1 (10.4%), CO2 concentration change, and the integrated fertilization of CO2 and N deposition increased NPP by 4.4 Tg C·a-1 (10.3%) and 9.4 Tg C·a-1 (21.8%), respectively.  相似文献

亚热带森林生态系统具有巨大的固碳潜力。净初级生产力(NPP)在碳循环过程中具有重要的作用, 受到气候变化、大气成分、森林扰动的强度和频度、林龄等因子的综合影响, 然而目前上述各因子对亚热带森林NPP变化的贡献尚不明确, 需要鉴别森林NPP时空变化的主要驱动因子, 以准确认识亚热带森林生态系统碳循环。该文综合气象数据、年最大叶面积指数(LAI)、参考年NPP (BEPS模型模拟)、林龄、森林类型、土地覆盖、数字高程模型(DEM)、土壤质地、CO2浓度、氮沉降等多源数据, 利用InTEC模型(Integrated Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon-budget Model)研究亚热带典型地区江西省森林生态系统1901-2010年NPP时空动态变化特征, 通过模拟情景设计, 着重讨论1970-2010年气候变化、林龄、CO2浓度和氮沉降对森林NPP动态变化的影响。研究结果如下: (1) InTEC模型能较好地模拟研究区NPP的时空变化; (2)江西省森林NPP 1901-2010年为(47.7 ± 4.2) Tg C·a-1 (平均值±标准偏差), 其中20世纪70年代、80年代、90年代分别为50.7、48.8、45.4 Tg C·a-1, 2000-2009年平均为55.2 Tg C·a-1; 随着森林干扰后的恢复再生长, 江西省森林NPP显著上升, 2000-2009年NPP增加的森林面积占森林总面积的60%; (3) 1970-2010年, 仅考虑森林干扰因子和仅考虑非干扰因子(气候、氮沉降、CO2浓度)情景下NPP分别为43.1和53.9 Tg C·a-1, 比综合考虑干扰因子和非干扰因子作用下的NPP分别低估7.3 Tg C·a-1 (低估的NPP与综合考虑干扰因子和非干扰因子作用下NPP的比值为14.5%,下同)和高估3.6 Tg C·a-1 (7.1%); 气候因子导致平均NPP减少2.0 Tg C·a-1 (4.7%), 氮沉降导致平均NPP增加4.5 Tg C·a-1 (10.4%), CO2浓度变化及耦合效应(氮沉降+ CO2浓度变化)分别导致平均NPP增加4.4 Tg C·a-1 (10.3%)和9.4 Tg C·a-1 (21.8%)。  相似文献

Kelp forests worldwide are known as hotspots for macroscopic biodiversity and primary production, yet very little is known about the biodiversity and roles of microorganisms in these ecosystems. Secondary production by heterotrophic bacteria associated to kelp is important in the food web as a link between kelp primary production and kelp forest consumers. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between bacterial diversity and two important processes in this ecosystem; bacterial secondary production and primary succession on kelp surfaces. To address this, kelp, Laminaria hyperborea, from southwestern Norway was sampled at different geographical locations and during an annual cycle. Pyrosequencing (454-sequencing) of amplicons of the 16S rRNA gene of bacteria was used to study bacterial diversity. Incorporation of tritiated thymidine was used as a measure of bacterial production. Our data show that bacterial diversity (richness and evenness) increases with the age of the kelp surface, which corresponds to the primary succession of its bacterial communities. Higher evenness of bacterial operational taxonomical units (OTUs) is linked to higher bacterial production. Owing to the dominance of a few abundant OTUs, kelp surface biofilm communities may be characterized as low-diversity habitats. This is the first detailed study of kelp-associated bacterial communities using high-throughput sequencing and it extends current knowledge on microbial community assembly and dynamics on living surfaces.  相似文献

Whole cells of Bacillus halodurans LBK 261 were used as a source of catalase for degradation of hydrogen peroxide. The organism, B. halodurans grown at 55°C and pH 10, yielded a maximum catalase activity of 275 U g-1 (wet wt.) cells. The catalase in the whole cells was active over a broad range of pH with a maximum at pH 8-9. The enzyme was optimally active at 55°C, but had low stability above 40°C. The whole cell biocatalyst exhibited a Km of 6.6 mM for H2O2 and Vmax of 707 mM H2O2 min-1 g-1 wet wt. cells, and showed saturation kinetics at 50 mM H2O2. The cells were entrapped in calcium alginate and used for H2O2 degradation at pH 9 in batch and continuous mode. In the batch process, the immobilized preparation containing 1.5 g (wet wt.) cells could be recycled at least four times for complete degradation of the peroxide in 50 mL solution at 25°C. An excess of immobilized biocatalyst could be used in a continuous stirred tank reactor for an average of 9 days at temperatures upto 55°C, and in a packed bed reactor (PBR) for 5 days before the beads started to deform.  相似文献

Methyl 2-deoxy-3,5,6-tri-O-p-nitrobenzoyl- -ribo-hexofuranoside was converted into the glycosyl halide which was then condensed with 2,4-bis(trimethylsilyloxy)-pyrimidine in the presence of mercuric chloride to give, after alkaline methanolysis, 1-(2-deoxy-β- -ribo-hexofuranosyl)uracil, in a yield too low for the reaction to be applied to deuterated compounds. Methyl 2-deoxy- -allofuranoside-2-d was degraded into methyl 2-deoxy- -arabinofuranoside-2-d. Its di-p-nitrobenzoate was converted into the glycosyl halide which was coupled with 2,4-bis(trimethylsilyloxy)-pyrimidine to give, after alkaline hydrolysis, deuterated deoxyuridine. Thiationammonolysis of a mixture of the 3′,5′-di-p-nitrobenzoates of the latter compound and its anomer gave the corresponding deoxycytidines. Comparison of the n.m.r. spectra of these compounds to that of deuterated deoxycytidine, prepared by the enzymic reduction of cytidine 5′-pyrophosphate with the Escherichia coli system in the presence of deuterium oxide confirmed that the substitution of a hydroxyl group by a hydrogen atom proceeds with retention of configuration.  相似文献

The stereochemistry and mechanism in the reduction of the C–C double bond of carvone by the cultured cells of Astasia longa, a nonchlorophyllous cell line classified in Euglenales, was studied. The reduction of the C–C double bond of carvone with the cultured cells involved the anti-addition of hydrogen atom from the si face at the -position and the re face at the β-position of carbonyl group. Two different enone reductases were isolated from the cultured cells of A. longa. Both reductases catalyzed stereospecifically the anti-addition of hydrogen atoms from the si face at C-1 and the re face at C-6. However, one of the reductases participated in a hydrogen transfer of the pro-4R hydrogen of NADH to C-6 position of carvone and the other used the pro-4S hydrogen of NADH.  相似文献

The human X-ray repair complementing group 1 gene (XRCC1) is an important candidate gene influencing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) susceptibility. The objective of this study was to detect the association between c.1161G>A and c.1779C>G variants of XRCC1 gene and HCC risk. This study was conducted in Chinese population consisting of 623 HCC cases and 639 controls. These two genetic variants could be genotyped by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. The association of XRCC1 gene variants with the risk of HCC was investigated under different genetic models. Our findings suggested that the genotypes/alleles from c.1161G>A and c.1779C>G genetic variants were statistically associated with HCC risk. As for the c.1161G>A, the AA genotype was statistically associated with the increased risk of HCC compared to GG wild genotype (OR = 2.36, 95% CI 1.63-3.40, P < 0.001). As for the c.1779C>G, the risk of HCC was significantly higher for GG genotype compared to CC wild genotype (OR = 2.17, 95% CI 1.51-3.12, P < 0.001). Furthermore, significant differences in the risk of HCC were also detected in other genetic models for these two variants. The allele-A of c.1161G>A and allele-G of c.1779C>G variants may contribute to the susceptibility of HCC (A versus G: OR = 1.48, 95% CI 1.26-1.75, P < 0.001 and G versus C: OR = 1.51, 95% CI 1.28-1.78, P < 0.001). Our data indicated that these two variants of XRCC1 gene were statistically associated with HCC risk in Chinese population.  相似文献

We determined antibodies to the pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus in children to assess: the incidence of (H1N1) 2009 infections in the 2009/2010 season in Germany, the proportion of subclinical infections and to compare titers in vaccinated and infected children.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Eight pediatric hospitals distributed over Germany prospectively provided sera from in- or outpatients aged 1 to 17 years from April 1st to July 31st 2010. Vaccination history, recall of infections and sociodemographic factors were ascertained. Antibody titers were measured with a sensitive and specific in-house hemagglutination inhibition test (HIT) and compared to age-matched sera collected during 6 months before the onset of the pandemic in Germany. We analyzed 1420 post-pandemic and 300 pre-pandemic sera. Among unvaccinated children aged 1–4 and 5–17 years the prevalence of HI titers (≥1∶10) was 27.1% (95% CI: 23.5–31.3) and 53.5% (95% CI: 50.9–56.2) compared to 1.7% and 5.5%, respectively, for pre-pandemic sera, accounting for a serologically determined incidence of influenza A (H1N1) 2009 during the season 2009/2010 of 25,4% (95% CI : 19.3–30.5) in children aged 1–4 years and 48.0% (95% CI: 42.6–52.0) in 5–17 year old children. Of children with HI titers ≥1∶10, 25.5% (95% CI: 22.5–28.8) reported no history of any infectious disease since June 2009. Among vaccinated children, 92% (95%-CI: 87.0–96.6) of the 5–17 year old but only 47.8% (95%-CI: 33.5–66.5) of the 1–4 year old children exhibited HI titers against influenza A virus (H1N1) 2009.

Conclusion

Serologically determined incidence of influenza A (H1N1) 2009 infections in children indicates high infection rates with older children (5–17 years) infected twice as often as younger children. In about a quarter of the children with HI titers after the season 2009/2010 subclinical infections must be assumed. Low HI titers in young children after vaccination with the AS03B-adjuvanted split virion vaccine need further scrutiny.  相似文献

Introduction

Several aspects of the epidemiology of 2009 (H1N1) pandemic influenza have not been accurately determined. We sought to study whether the age distribution of cases differs in comparison with seasonal influenza.

Methods

We searched for official, publicly available data through the internet from different countries worldwide on the age distribution of cases of influenza during the 2009 (H1N1) pandemic influenza period and most recent seasonal influenza periods. Data had to be recorded through the same surveillance system for both compared periods.

Results

For 2009 pandemic influenza versus recent influenza seasons, in USA, visits for influenza-like illness to sentinel providers were more likely to involve the age groups of 5–24, 25–64 and 0–4 years compared with the reference group of >64 years [odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval (CI)): 2.43 (2.39–2.47), 1.66 (1.64–1.69), and 1.51 (1.48–1.54), respectively]. Pediatric deaths were less likely in the age groups of 2–4 and <2 years than the reference group of 5–17 years [OR (95% CI): 0.46 (0.25–0.85) and 0.49 (0.30–0.81), respectively]. In Australia, notifications for laboratory-confirmed influenza were more likely in the age groups of 10–19, 5–9, 20–44, 45–64 and 0–4 years than the reference group of >65 years [OR (95% CI): 7.19 (6.67–7.75), 5.33 (4.90–5.79), 5.04 (4.70–5.41), 3.12 (2.89–3.36) and 1.89 (1.75–2.05), respectively]. In New Zealand, consultations for influenza-like illness by sentinel providers were more likely in the age groups of <1, 1–4, 35–49, 5–19, 20–34 and 50–64 years than the reference group of >65 years [OR (95% CI): 2.38 (1.74–3.26), 1.99 (1.62–2.45), 1.57 (1.30–1.89), 1.57 (1.30–1.88), 1.40 (1.17–1.69) and 1.39 (1.14–1.70), respectively].

Conclusions

The greatest increase in influenza cases during 2009 (H1N1) pandemic influenza period, in comparison with most recent seasonal influenza periods, was seen for school-aged children, adolescents, and younger adults.  相似文献

Wether lambs (n = 27, average BW = 40 kg) were used to test response to forage treated with Tasco-Forage (an extract of the brown kelp Ascophyllum nodosum) prior to conserving, or to direct feeding of the extract (Tasco-EX). Hays made from endophyte (Neoyphodium coenophialum)-infested tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea)-based pasture received 0 or 3 kg of Tasco/ha prior to harvest. Lambs, blocked by weight, were randomly allotted to three diets: (1) control hay, (2) treated hay, and (3) #1 + Tasco-EX fed at 1% of the diet. Hays were low in CP (<7%) so all lambs were fed soybean meal (12% of the diet) in addition to trace mineralized salt. Diets were fed at 1.5% BW to prevent refusals. Total collections (7 d) were made during periods without or with applied heat stress. After each period, rumen contents were obtained to determine pH, NH3 and VFA. Lambs were sacrificed post-trial. A subset was used to evaluate sensory traits and muscle fatty acids. Lambs were in negative N balance during the study and Tasco treatments did not affect N metabolism. Fecal N tended (P < 0.10) to increase with short duration heat stress causing a concomitant decrease (P < 0.05) in apparent N digestibility (58.6 versus 56.1%; S.E. = 0.7). Urinary N loss decreased (P < 0.001) with heat stress (8.0 versus 5.9 g/d; S.E. = 0.2), resulting in increased (P < 0.001) N retention (−2.1 versus −0.3 g/d; S.E. = 0.2). Apparent OM digestibility was not affected by heat stress but was greater (P < 0.05) for lambs fed Tasco-EX treatment than those fed treated hay. Treatment diets decreased (P < 0.05) ruminal butyrate. Heat stress increased (P < 0.05) acetate and total VFA and decreased (P < 0.01) ruminal pH. A tendency (P < 0.11) of increased 14:1ω5, decreased (P < 0.05) 18:0 and total saturated fatty acids in muscle was observed with Tasco diets. Meat sensory characteristics were not affected by treatment. Tasco may alter some aspects of rumen or lipid metabolism but has no effect on N metabolism or meat sensory characteristics of sheep fed restricted, low-quality diets.  相似文献
