In angiosperm pollen the reticulate-perforate exine sculpturing is associated with sporophytic self-incompatibility (S.S.I.) and imperforate and microperforate exine sculpturing is associated with gametophytic self-incompatibility. The earliest unequivocal angiosperm pollen conforms to exine morphology of pollen from plants with S.S.I. The orgin of S.S.I. is hypothesized to have coincided with the appearance of what is now the earliest recognizable angiosperm pollen. Other angiosperm characteristics correlated with S.I., functional stigmatic areas, large showy flowers (or aggregated inflorescences), and passive seed dispersal, provide some insight into the biological aspects of the earliest angiosperms.  相似文献

British Tertiary mammals are best represented in the Eocene and earliest Oligocene epochs. Additional occurrences are from the Miocene and Late Pliocene. The Eocene is marked by the occurrence of various extinct orders as well as the appearances of some of the earliest and must primitive artiodactyls and perissodactyls. The appearances in the Early Eocene and Early Oligocene represent major dispersal events, reflecting penecontemporaneous palaeogeographic changes. In the intervening timespan Britain was part of an European island, sharing its endemic terrestrial fauna. From the late Middle Eocene to earliest Oligocene, the British record is detailed enough to trace successive changes in the patterns of diversity and faunal turnover, which may relate to changing climate as well as to the dispersal events. It has been shown that changes in patterns of ecological diversity through the Eocene and earliest Oligocene match vegetational changes judged from plant fossils. They suggest a gradual transition from closed forest in the Early Eocene to a more open environment with reedmarsh and wooded patches by the end of the epoch.  相似文献

A mathematical model for the development of human society, beginning with the earliest stages of urban cultures, is outlined. In the early stages of history, behavior was characterized largely by adherence to a number of beliefs and prejudices of diffeirent kinds, which were accepted on faith and not subject to critical rational analysis. Due to psychobiological variability a very small number of individuals spontaneously appear at all times who challenge the accepted beliefs and prejudices and do not follow the accepted patterns of social behavior. The effect of these individuals upon the rest of the society, especially upon the younger generation, depends on the facilities with which information spreads in society. In earliest societies, when modern methods of mass communication were unknown, the channels of communication were practically identical with the channels of economic transport. The latter in its turn depended on the nature of the roads, and especially on the presence of waterway, which facilitated transportation. The sizes of the earliest cities and the distances between them were largely determined by relative ease of transporation. Expressions are derived for the average size of the earliest cities and for the average distance between them. The calculated average populations of the earliest cities are of the order of 103; the distance of the order of 102 km. Both are in agreement with some archaeological findings. An expression for the time spaon required for the development from the earliest stages of urban cultures to the present time is derived and shown to depend on the specific shoreline of the country, that is, the length of the shorline divided by the area of the country. It is pointed out that western Europe's specific shoreline, including land bordering both seas and rivers, is ten times as large as the shoreline area of other parts of the world. It is shown that this greater specific shoreline may account quantitatively for the faster social and technological development of western Europe in the last few centuries. The calculated total span of time of development from earliest urban cultures to our days is found to be of the order of magnitude of ten thousand years. It is shown that the model accounts for the existence at the present time of primitive cultures. A number of suggestions is made in regard to other possible applications of mathematics to history.  相似文献

To investigate ventricular tachycardias produced in healthy canine myocardium by stimulation of sympathetic ganglia or cardiac nerves, we simultaneously recorded a surface ECG and 63 ventricular electrograms in anesthetized open-chest dogs. Isochronal and isopotential maps were generated off-line by computer. Ventricular tachycardia with uniform beat-to-beat morphology was induced in 13 or 22 dogs by electrical stimulation of the left stellate ganglion (five experiments), the left middle cervical ganglion (four experiments), the left caudal pole cardiopulmonary nerve (two experiments), or the ventrolateral cardiac nerve (eight experiments). It was not inducible by stimulation of the right-sided major cardiopulmonary nerves or ganglia. In most instances the earliest measured electrical excitation occurred on the posterior aspect of the ventricles. Isochronal maps demonstrated a radial spread of the impulse away from the area of earliest excitation. Changes in the region of earliest excitation and (or) activation pattern were accompanied by changes in QRS morphology. The potential gradients measured between areas displaying positive and negative T waves on the anterior and left lateral aspects of the ventricles were significantly increased by ventrolateral cardiac nerve stimulation. However, the ventricular regions where these potential gradients existed differed from the regions of earliest excitation during ventricular tachycardia. These results demonstrate that the thoracic autonomic nervous system can induce repetitive ventricular excitation originating from consistent loci.  相似文献

Abstract

In many animals, factors deposited by the mother into the egg control the earliest events in development of the zygote. These maternal RNAs and proteins play critical roles in oocyte development and the earliest steps of embryogenesis such as fertilization, cell division and embryonic patterning. Here, this article summarizes recent discoveries made on the maternal control of germline specification in zebrafish. Moreover, this review will discuss the major gaps remaining in our understanding of this process and highlight recent technical innovations in zebrafish, which allow tackling some of these questions in the near future.  相似文献

We have studied the phenotypic characteristics and growth properties of murine T lymphoma cell lines derived from primary x-ray-induced thymic lymphomas at the earliest stage at which they can be detected, and well before spreading to other organs has occurred. These cell lines serve as model systems for the earliest events in T cell lymphoma induction, before tumor cell progression and spreading to other organs. We find that primary x-ray-induced T cell lymphoma lines have phenotypic characteristics of thymic pre-T cells and show no proliferative response to any of the IL tested nor to other hematopoietic growth factors. However, they do proliferate in response to insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and to a small autocrine peptide distinct from IGF-I, which we term lymphoma growth factor. One of the earliest lesions in T cell lymphoma induction may therefore be an inhibition of differentiation at one of several specific points. In its early stages, T lymphoma cell growth may be restricted to an environment where local concentrations of specific growth factors such as IGF-I or lymphoma growth factor are sufficiently high.  相似文献

Johann, Heinrich, Ferdinand von Autenrieth [1772–1835], was a teacher of anatomy, physiology and pharmacology at the University of Tübingen, Germany. He was the author of a famous textbook on Physiology and one of the earliest pharmacologists [Öffentlicher Lehrer der Arzneykunst]. In his textbooks, he presented a lot of information that and how biological rhythms influenced physiological functions in the human body, the book was used for his medical lectures for students. He can be regarded as on of the earliest chronophysiologists. Most important, he assumed a chemical stimulation responsible for generating the periodicities in the human body.  相似文献

From recent developments of the early evolution theory it follows that the earliest mRNAs were short ( approximately 20 nt) (G+C)-rich polynucleotides. These short sequences could form hairpins, which would be of high evolutionary advantage because of stability and uniqueness of their conformations. Due to mutations accumulated during billions of years of evolution, the speculated earliest hairpins would largely lose the initial complementarities. Some of the original complementary base-to-base contacts, however, may have survived. Computational analysis of modern prokaryotic mRNA sequences reveals excess population of the expected short range complementarities. The derived earliest mRNA hairpin size fully corresponds to the predicted size of ancient coding duplexes. The repertoire of the surviving hairpins traced in modern mRNA confirms duplex structure of the earliest mRNA, suggested by the early molecular evolution theory.  相似文献

Notch signalling is likely to regulate multiple aspects of lymphoid development and function. During T cell development, Notch signalling is required for commitment of the earliest progenitor, and may also function during other developmental stages. T cell commitment from a common lymphoid progenitor occurs at the expense of B cell development, suggesting that Notch signalling inhibits the earliest stage of B lymphopoiesis. In contrast, recent evidence suggests that Notch promotes the development of marginal zone lymphocytes. Not only is Notch required for later stages of B cell development, but several viral proteins appear to utilize Notch signalling in B cells to mediate their functions. In this review, we will focus on potential roles of Notch signalling in B lymphopoiesis and also consider how viral proteins may utilize Notch signalling in B cells.  相似文献

This report describes a case of premature ventricular contractions with the preferential pathway traveling from the left coronary cusp (LCC) to the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) via the right coronary cusp (RCC). The earliest activation was recorded within the LCC, while the successful ablation site was the RCC, where the second earliest prepotential was recorded. The remediable ablation site for ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) arising from the left ventricular (LV) ostium may not necessarily be the site of the earliest activation, but may be the site with the potential representing the preferential pathway.  相似文献

A minimum of 28 genera of rodents and one genus of lagomorph were recovered from the Tugen Hills, Baringo District, Kenya, from localities dating from over 15.5 to about 4.4 Ma. The middle Miocene (sites dated between 15.8 and 15.3 Ma) rodent fauna recovered primarily from the Kipsaramon site complex, Muruyur Formation, includes a mixture of characteristically early Miocene taxa, and more derived forms. Composition of the African rodent fauna changes dramatically with the introduction of myocricetodontines, democricetodontines, and dendromurines, immigrants primarily from southern Asia. In the Tugen Hills, these taxa are first found in the Kabasero localities, Ngorora Formation, at sites dating from 12.5-12.33 Ma. A second major change in the African rodent fauna reflects the introduction of murines, immigrants from southern Asia. In the Tugen Hills murines are first encountered at Kapcheberek, Lukeino Formation, dated to 5.9-5.7 Ma. One rodent genus from the Lukeino Formation (Arvicanthis), and two from the Tabarin locality, Chemeron Formation (Heliosciurus, Paraxerus; 4.5-4.4 Ma), represent the earliest records of these extant African genera. A cricetomyine from the Ngorora Formation (12.5 Ma) is likely the earliest report of this exclusively African group. One of the earliest African records of porcupines (Hystricide) is from the Lukeino Formation. Lagomorphs are poorly represented, but include one of the earliest African occurrences of the family Leporidae from the Mpesida Beds (bracketed by dates of 7-6.2 Ma), and possibly a new genus of leporid from the Kapcheberek locality. Analysis of the Tugen Hills small mammals in association with other African records suggests several episodes of dispersal between Africa and Eurasia during the middle and late Miocene. Rodents from Kipsaramon are indicative of forests in conjunction with more open habitats. Those from the Kapcheberek locality are suggestive of a savanna habitat. The rodents from the Tabarin locality suggest a woodland environment.  相似文献

We used ultra-deep sequencing to obtain tens of thousands of HIV-1 sequences from regions targeted by CD8+ T lymphocytes from longitudinal samples from three acutely infected subjects, and modeled viral evolution during the critical first weeks of infection. Previous studies suggested that a single virus established productive infection, but these conclusions were tempered because of limited sampling; now, we have greatly increased our confidence in this observation through modeling the observed earliest sample diversity based on vastly more extensive sampling. Conventional sequencing of HIV-1 from acute/early infection has shown different patterns of escape at different epitopes; we investigated the earliest escapes in exquisite detail. Over 3–6 weeks, ultradeep sequencing revealed that the virus explored an extraordinary array of potential escape routes in the process of evading the earliest CD8 T-lymphocyte responses – using 454 sequencing, we identified over 50 variant forms of each targeted epitope during early immune escape, while only 2–7 variants were detected in the same samples via conventional sequencing. In contrast to the diversity seen within epitopes, non-epitope regions, including the Envelope V3 region, which was sequenced as a control in each subject, displayed very low levels of variation. In early infection, in the regions sequenced, the consensus forms did not have a fitness advantage large enough to trigger reversion to consensus amino acids in the absence of immune pressure. In one subject, a genetic bottleneck was observed, with extensive diversity at the second time point narrowing to two dominant escape forms by the third time point, all within two months of infection. Traces of immune escape were observed in the earliest samples, suggesting that immune pressure is present and effective earlier than previously reported; quantifying the loss rate of the founder virus suggests a direct role for CD8 T-lymphocyte responses in viral containment after peak viremia. Dramatic shifts in the frequencies of epitope variants during the first weeks of infection revealed a complex interplay between viral fitness and immune escape.  相似文献

Summary Transformation of the Golgi apparatus inMicrasterias americana at various stages after full growth and at the earliest stage of cell growth was investigated using an electron microscope. Silver-hexamine staining and the acid phosphatase (ACPase) test were also carried out. In cells cultured for two days after full growth, dictyosomes began to produce hypertrophied vesicles (HVs) along their five peripheral reagions. The HVs contained fibrous material, which was stained by silver-hexamine, and small granules which reacted with ACPase. The HVs were pinched off the dictyosomes and fused with each other and with the vacuoles. In the earliest stage of cell growth, the cisternae of the dictyosomes were stretched in one direction, which modified the shape from circular to elliptical and the dictyosomes curved along the long axis of the ellipse. These curved dictyosomes which produced middle sized vesicles (MVs) from the distal networks, divided into two identical parts along the short axis of the ellipse.  相似文献

In a previous paper, in which a possible mathematical approach to history was outlined, it was shown that urbanization plays an important part in the propagation of new ideas. The rate of such propagation influences the rate of historical developments. The present paper deals in more detail with possible mechanisms of formation of earliest cities. Equations are derived which give the limiting size of such cities and their rate of growth. Of particular importance for the spread of new ideas is the spread of information. The latter largely depends on the fraction of individuals who travel between city and country. Expressions for this quantity are derived. An approach is outlined to the mathematical study of the earliest social classes, which may have been formed as a result of military, religious, or economic stratifications.  相似文献

Background

Immediately after damage to the nervous system, a cascade of physical, physiological, and anatomical events lead to the collapse of neuronal function and often death. This progression of injury processes is called "secondary injury." In the spinal cord and brain, this loss in function and anatomy is largely irreversible, except at the earliest stages. We investigated the most ignored and earliest component of secondary injury. Large bioelectric currents immediately enter damaged cells and tissues of guinea pig spinal cords. The driving force behind these currents is the potential difference of adjacent intact cell membranes. For perhaps days, it is the biophysical events caused by trauma that predominate in the early biology of neurotrauma.  相似文献

The last decade has witnessed a heated debate over the age and the character of the earliest occupation of Europe. This paper addresses two aspects of the debate, one dealing with the chronology of occupation, which is put to use in the second issue, an exploration of the behaviour of the earliest occupants of Europe. The review of the debate on chronology concludes that a short chronology applies to Europe north of the large mountain chains of the Alps and the Pyrenees, where the earliest traces of a human presence date back to about half a million years ago. In this phased-colonisation model, the Mediterranean, and especially Spain, saw an earlier occupation, starting around the end of the Lower Pleistocene. The archaeological record of these first Europeans suggests that from the first presence in northern Europe onwards, regular hunting of large game was common practice among Middle Pleistocene hominids. By situating this archaeological evidence in the context of findings from a range of other disciplines I develop a behavioural scenario which suggests that, at its latest by the Middle Pleistocene, increased forms of social cooperation, exchange of information within larger groups and in general forms of behaviour based on a "release from proximity" had become a standard ingredient of the hominid behavioural repertoire.  相似文献

The earlier stages of life evolution at the molecular level were reconstructed. A set of triplets incorporated into the earliest RNA molecules (mRNA) was determined. It is believed that tRNA is one of the descedants of the earliest protein-encoding sequences. It was shown that tRNA has a hidden periodic structure of base sequences that conforms to the rule (GNY)n, indicating it ancient age. A set of the earliest amino acids was established and their distribution with respect to age was made. It was shown that genomes were built from elementary units (primary genes) by recombination or binding some time prior to division into eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Mean dimensions of the elementary unit for eukaryotes and prokaryotes were determined.  相似文献

Background

The coevolution theory of the origin of the genetic code suggests that the genetic code is an imprint of the biosynthetic relationships between amino acids. However, this theory does not seem to attribute a role to the biosynthetic relationships between the earliest amino acids that evolved along the pathways of energetic metabolism. As a result, the coevolution theory is unable to clearly define the very earliest phases of genetic code origin. In order to remove this difficulty, I here suggest an extension of the coevolution theory that attributes a crucial role to the first amino acids that evolved along these biosynthetic pathways and to their biosynthetic relationships, even when defined by the non-amino acid molecules that are their precursors.  相似文献
