1. Non-invasive methods were developed for measuring mammary blood flow in lactating goats. 2. A Doppler principle ultrasound device was equipped with an external detector measuring maximal blood velocity (Vmax) and average blood velocity (Vav) was calculated as Vmax/2. Volume flow then depended on determination of the angle of insonation and the cross-sectional area of the milk vein (the caudal superficial epigastric or subcutaneous abdominal vein). 3. Blood velocities were measured on the milk vein of either side of the animal while clamping the pudendal veins manually. Blood velocities ranged from 7-34 cm/sec. 4. The milk vein diameter was measured by means of a slide gauge which, for clearly protruding veins, gave similar results to that measured by ultrasound scanning. In protruding veins the cross-section was circular. In non-protruding veins the cross-section was elliptical and the slide gauge significantly (P less than 0.01) overestimated the cross-sectional area. The milk vein diameter of either side measured in 10 lactating goats was 8.8 +/- 1.1 mm (means +/- SD). 5. Blood flow ranged from 90-675 ml/min in a dry and a high-yielding (3.4 l milk daily) goat, respectively. The reproducibility of the blood flow measurements was 12-16%. 6. It is concluded that the present method may be used for quantitative measurements of mammary blood flow in goats.  相似文献

The technique of surgical repair for zone two flexor tendon injuries has been debated extensively throughout the years, yet adhesion formation, suture rupture, and suture locking on the pulley edge remain possible consequences of a poor repair. The partially lacerated tendon is especially challenging to treat since there can be justification for not intervening surgically. In a partial laceration canine model we measured failure load and suture gap formation for tendons repaired with the Lee, modified four-strand Savage, Kessler, modified Kessler, and Augmented Becker core suture techniques and with a simple running peripheral suture. The modified Kessler (106.3 N, SD 18.8 N) and modified Savage (108.2 N, SD 19.9 N) repair techniques had a significantly higher failure load than the Lee (85.0 N, SD 20.6 N) suture method (P < 0.05), while there were no differences among the other techniques. There were no significant differences in resistance to gap formation among the repair techniques, with the mean values ranging from 38.9 N/mm (SD 15.7 N/mm) using the simple running suture to 53.2 N/mm (SD 25.8 N/mm) with the Kessler repair. The mean load to produce a 1.5 mm repair site gap ranged from 71.1 N (SD 21.5 N) in the Lee repair to 91.3 N (SD 22.2 N) in the Augmented Becker repair although there were no significant differences among repair methods. All repair methods were much weaker than tendons left unrepaired (184.7 N, SD 41.3 N).  相似文献

Determination of the stresses in soft tissues such as ligaments and tendons under uniaxial tension require accurate measurement of their cross-sectional area. Of the many methods available, there are concerns regarding contact methods which exert external loads and deform the cross-sectional shape of soft tissues. Hence, the area measurements are affected. On the other hand, non-contact methods have difficulties in dealing with complex shapes, especially with concavities. To address these problems, a new measurement system using a charge-coupled device (CCD) laser displacement sensor has been developed and tested. This system measures the complete surface profile of the object by rotating the laser 360° around the soft tissue. Then, the cross-sectional shape is reconstructed and the cross-sectional area determined via Simpson's rule. The system's accuracy was first verified with objects of various cross-sectional shapes and areas (cylinder: 23.1, 76.5, 510.3 mm2; cuboid: 34.3, 163.8, 316.7 mm2, and cylinder with concavities: 121.4 mm2). The CCD laser reflectance system's accuracy was within 2.0% for these objects. To test biological application, the goat Achilles tendon and the anteromedial bundle of the porcine anterior cruciate ligament specimens were measured and compared to values obtained using another accepted technique, the laser micrometer system. The areas obtained using the CCD laser reflectance system were 4.4% and 9.7% lower than those obtained with the laser micrometer system respectively. These differences could be mainly attributed to concavities. Thus, the CCD laser reflectance system is an improved method for measuring the cross-sectional shape and area of soft tissues since it can detect and account for concavities without physically contacting the specimen.  相似文献

A new method is presented that enables the induction of embolisms in a fraction of all xylem vessels, based on diameter, at one cut end of a stem segment. The method is based on the different capillary characteristic of xylem vessels of different cross-sectional size. To verify the method, air embolisms were induced in cut xylem vessels of chrysanthemum (Dendranthemaxgrandiflorum Tzvelev cv. Cassa) stem segments at different xylem tensions and compared with the distribution of gas-filled vessels as visualized by cryo-scanning electron microscopy (Cryo-SEM). At -6 kPa xylem pressure, air-entrance was only induced in large diameter vessels (>30 microm), while at -24 kPa embolisms were induced in almost all xylem vessels (>10 microm). Although the principle of the embolization method worked well, smaller diameter vessels were observed to be embolized than was expected according to the calculations. The role of cross-sectional shape and contact angle between xylem sap and vessel wall at the menisci are discussed. After correction for the observed (diameter independent) deviation from circularity of the cross-sectional vessel shape the contact angle was calculated to be approximately 55 degrees. Hydraulic resistance (Rh) measurements before and after embolization showed that the effect of embolizing only large diameter cut xylem vessels had only a small influence on overall Rh of a stem segment. Embolizing all cut xylem vessels at one cut end almost trebled overall Rh. The difference was discussed in the light of the networking capacity of the xylem system.  相似文献

Understanding the kinematics of the diaphragm muscle at the single fiber level is important in understanding the mechanics of its membrane. Nevertheless, the geometric parameters of single muscle fiber contraction remain poorly understood. We modeled the kinematics of a single muscle fiber of the diaphragm to determine the relationships among fiber shape, perimeter of the fiber cross-section, and apparent surface area of the fiber during muscle shortening. We used the models to identify which constraints on the geometric parameters are most consistent with physiological data on diaphragmatic muscle shortening. Our kinematic models use isovolumic fibers with elliptical cross-sections, and these models have the following properties: (1) constant cross-sectional shape, (2) inextensible cross-sectional perimeter, (3) constant cross-sectional transverse dimension, or (4) constant apparent surface area. These models were investigated during muscle shortening of the diaphragm from functional residual capacity to total lung capacity. The model that matches physiologic data best has zero transverse strain and has a relationship between fiber shape and muscle shortening consistent with published data on single muscle fiber mechanics.  相似文献

Water Transport in Impaired Leaf Vein Systems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract: The subject of our investigation was the water regime of broad bean leaves ( Vicia faba L.), especially after having mechanically severed parts of the leaf blade and the leaf venation. Under moderate conditions, 18 - 22 °C temperature and 50 - 70 % relative humidity, the leaves remained viable even after extensive damage. Only if more than 90 % of the xylem cross sectional area of a leaf was severed, the leaf wilted. Lesser damage to the xylem cross-sectional area only resulted in a reduced rate of transpiration and assimilation, compared to intact leaves. The cuts in larger veins were bypassed into small or even very small veins, as shown by xylem transport of dyes. In intact leaves, small veins have a negligible task in long-distance transport. Here, however, transport velocity in small veins was severalfold increased compared to the measurement of transport velocity in veins of the same size in intact leaves. Thereby, water transport to leaf areas distal from the cut was ensured.  相似文献

We have analyzed by transmission electron microscopy the mitotic process of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites in an asynchronous population of axenically cultured parasites. Our observations showed that nuclear microtubules, initially located at random in the karyosome during prophase, formed in subsequent stages a mitotic spindle closely related to the nuclear membrane at the polar regions of dividing nuclei. In late prophase and in anaphase, chromosomes appeared as dense bodies 0.1-0.5 microm. At least 15 chromosomes appeared in favorable planes of section, arranged as an incomplete elliptical circle, in close contact with microtubules. There was no morphological evidence of structures resembling the kinetochores of higher eukaryotes. When cut in cross-section, the mitotic spindle was made of 28-35 microtubular rosette assemblies. The latter probably correspond to a similar number of chromosomes, as has been shown by others with pulse-field electrophoresis and fluorescence microscopy of trophozoite spreads. In turn, each microtubular rosette was constituted by 7-12 parallel microtubules. In later stages of the metaphase, two sets of chromosomes were disposed forming a pair of elliptical circles. An additional finding in the dividing nuclei of E. histolytica trophozoites was the presence of compact conglomerates of numerous particles 50 nm in diameter, of similar electron density, shape, and size, probably corresponding to RNA episomes.  相似文献

Regenerated silk fibroin (SF) filaments were prepared by the wet spinning technique. The effect of coagulation conditions, such as coagulant type and coagulation temperature, was investigated on the morphological feature of SF filaments and a theoretical approach was also performed to understand the coagulation phenomena. SEM observation revealed that as the R group size of alcoholic coagulant (ROH) increased, the cross-sectional shape deviated more from a circular form. This is attributed to the fact that as the R group size increased, the mass transfer rate difference increased, but the coagulation rate decreased due to a reduced diffusion rate. Most non-alcoholic coagulants exhibited this circular cross-sectional shape, except dioxane, which showed a clover shape. As the coagulation bath temperature increased, the cross-section deviated less from a circular form, with the reduction of fiber diameter. When methanol/water mixture was used as a coagulant, an ellipse or a dog-bone shape was obtained with higher water content in methanol, which was attributed to the decrease of coagulation rate. Although methanol exhibited a positive value of mass transfer rate difference, a circular shape of cross-section was obtained due to the density difference of the coagulated and uncoagulated parts in the coagulating SF filament.  相似文献

Surgery was performed to repair lacerations which prevented cervical closure in thirteen mares. All lacerations involved the portion of the cervix that protrudes into the vagina. There did not appear to be a predisposition for lacerations to occur in any one position about the perimeter of the cervix. Nine mares had one laceration and four mares had two lacerations. Although the lacerations were presumed to have occurred at parturition, they apparently were not associated with dystocia. The method of surgical repair is described. Eight mares were bred after surgery, and five conceived.  相似文献

Accuracy of respiratory inductive plethysmographic cross-sectional areas   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The present study was undertaken to evaluate whether the respiratory inductive plethysmograph (RIP) 1) reflects changes of cross-sectional area enclosed by its transducer band in the presence of deformations of shape or whether it 2) has a stable base line. Testing of RIP was carried out with a device incorporating a thermally compensated oscillator and digital demodulatory circuitry. This system, introduced to commerce in 1983, superceded the nonthermal compensated oscillatory and analog demodulator circuitry first used in 1977. Testing the effects of changing cross-sectional area was accomplished by stretching a standard RIP transducer band around wooden dowels placed in holes on a peg board grid to form 23 curved and 5 rectangular shapes. The output voltage from RIP was linear for both the curved and rectangular shapes for changes of cross-sectional area within a physiological range. However, the regression line of voltage vs. cross-sectional area for the rectangular shapes was parallel and slightly displaced from the regression line for the curved shapes due to mutual coupling of inductance in the corners. Base-line drift from a RIP transducer band stretched to enclose an elliptical shape was less than 2.5 mV over a 12-h observation period. Current RIP technology accurately reflects changes of cross-sectional area of physiological shapes and has a stable base line.  相似文献

The extra-thoracic mouth-throat area has a major influence on the aerosol delivery to the proximal or peripheral intra-thoracic airways. To characterize the particle deposition in this area, it is important to investigate first the flow structures in this crucial--in relation to the aerosol deposition--region. The glottis, which is delimited by the vocal cords and therefore has the narrowest passage, generates a laryngeal jet and a reverse flow downstream the glottis. It is generally assumed that the glottis has different shapes and cross-sectional areas at different moments during the respiratory cycle and also depends on the average inspiratory flow rate. Therefore, the influence of a circular glottal aperture, with a cross-sectional area of 90 mm2 and an elliptical and triangular shape, both with an area of 45 mm2, on the flow is investigated. However, the area of the circular aperture is twice as big as the area of the elliptical one, it has almost no influence on the flow structures. On the other hand, the triangular glottal aperture shifts the laryngeal jet in the direction of the posterior wall, and generates two pairs of counter rotating secondary vortices downstream the glottis, where the circular and elliptical only aperture generates one pair of vortices. The difference in pressure drop is more dominated by the cross-sectional area than by the shape of the glottis. This suggests the need for rendering geometry of future upper airway models even more realistic as the appropriate three-dimensional (3D) medical imaging techniques are becoming available.  相似文献

The right antlers of fallow deer are significantly more developed than the left antlers with respect to the lengths of the beam, trez tine and palm, as well as antler weight and number of points. The cross-section at the base is also more elliptical in the right antler. The size difference is correlated with the more intense use of right antlers in fighting, and with the greater breadth of the areas of insertion of the neck muscles in the skull's nuchal region.  相似文献

A new device that utilizes the voltages induced in separate coils encircling the rib cage and abdomen by a magnetic field is described for measurement of cross-sectional areas of the human chest wall (rib cage and abdomen) and their variation during breathing. A uniform magnetic field (1.4 X 10(-7) Tesla at 100 kHz) is produced by generating an alternating current at 100 kHz in two square coils, 1.98 m on each side, parallel to the planes of the areas to be measured and placed symmetrically cephalad and caudad to these planes at a mean distance of 0.53 m. We demonstrated that the accuracy of the device on well-defined surfaces (squares, circles, rectangles, ellipses) was within 1% in all cases. Observed errors are due primarily to small inhomogeneities of the magnetic field and variation of the orientation of the coil relative to the field. Using a second magnetic field (80 kHz) perpendicular to the first, we measured the errors due to nonparallel orientation during quiet breathing and inspiratory capacity maneuvers. In 10 normal subjects, orientation effects were less than 2% for the rib cage and less than 0.7% for the abdomen. In five of these subjects, orientation effects at functional residual capacity in lateral and seated postures were generally less than or equal to 5%, but estimated tidal volume during spontaneous breathing was comparable to measurements in the supine posture. In five curarized patients, we assessed the linearity of volume-motion relationships of the rib cage and abdomen, comparing cross-sectional area and circumference measurements. Departures from linearity using cross-sectional areas were only one-third of those using circumferences. In seven normal subjects we compared cross-sectional area measurements with respiratory inductive plethysmography (RIP) and found comparable estimates of lung volume change over a wide range of relative rib cage contributions to tidal volume (-5 to 105%), with slightly higher standard deviations for the RIP (SD = 10% for RIP; SD = 4% for cross-sectional area).  相似文献

Factors influencing the output of an implantable force transducer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the Arthroscopically Implantable Force Probe (AIFP; MicroStrain, Burlington VT) for measuring force in a patellar tendon graft. Transducer drift, reproducibility of output due to the number of loading cycles and device location, and sensitivity to the tendon cross-sectional area were investigated. The AIFP was initialized, and then implanted into five human patellar tendon grafts three times; twice within the same location and once in a different location. The tendons were cyclically loaded in uniaxial tension for 500 cycles in each insertion site. The AIFP was then removed from the tendon and the baseline output was remeasured. It was determined that transducer drift was negligible. The relationship between the tensile load applied to the graft and AIFP output was quadratic and specimen dependent. The cyclic load response of the tendon-AIFP interface demonstrated a 24.9% decrease over the first 20 loading cycles, and subsequent cycling yielded relatively reproducible output. The output of the transducer varied when it was removed from the tendon and then reimplanted in the same location (range 3.7-109. 4% error), as well as in the second location (range 1.5-202.8% error). No correlation was observed between the cross-sectional area of the tendon and transducer output. This study concludes that implantable force probes should be used with caution and calibrated without removing the transducer from the graft.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between median episiotomy and severe (third- and fourth-degree) perineal lacerations in primiparous women. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: University-affiliated hospital providing secondary obstetric care in Quebec City. PATIENTS: A total of 6522 primiparous women who gave birth vaginally to a single live baby in cephalic position between 1985 and 1993. OUTCOME MEASURE: Incidence of third- and fourth-degree perineal lacerations. RESULTS: Median episiotomy was performed in 4390 women (67.3%). A total of 1002 women (15.4%) had a third- or fourth-degree laceration. The frequency of severe perineal lacerations was 20.6% with episiotomy and 4.5% without episiotomy (relative risk [RR] 4.58, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.74-5.62). This association persisted after adjustment by stratified analysis for type of delivery and birth weight (RR 3.03, 95% CI 2.52-3.63) and by logistic regression for type of delivery, birth weight, epidural analgesia, shoulder dystocia, baby''s head circumference, experience of the physician and year of delivery (odds ratio 3.58, 95% CI 2.84-4.50). CONCLUSION: Median episiotomy is strongly associated with third- and fourth-degree perineal lacerations in primiparous women. Reducing the use of this procedure could decrease the occurrence of severe perineal tears.  相似文献

Whether adjacent collagen fascicles transmit force in parallel is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to examine the magnitude of lateral force transmission between adjacent collagen fascicles from the human patellar and Achilles tendon. From each sample two adjacent strands of fascicles (phi 300-530 mum) enclosed in a fascicular membrane were dissected. The specimen was deformed to approximately 3% strain in three independent load-displacement cycles in a small-scale tensile testing device. Cycle 1: the fascicles and the fascicular membrane were intact. Cycle 2: one fascicle was transversally cut while the other fascicle and the fascicular membrane were kept intact. Cycle 3: both fascicles were cut in opposite ends while the fascicular membrane was left intact. A decline in peak force of 45% and 55% from cycle 1 to cycle 2, and 93% and 92% from cycle 2 to cycle 3 was observed in the patellar and Achilles tendon fascicles, respectively. A decline in stiffness of 39% and 60% from cycle 1 to cycle 2, and of 93% and 100% from cycle 2 to cycle 3 was observed in the patellar and Achilles tendon fascicles, respectively. The present data demonstrate that lateral force transmission between adjacent collagen fascicles in human tendons is small or negligible, suggesting that tendon fascicles largely act as independent structures and that force transmission principally takes place within the individual fascicles.  相似文献

The maximum stresses to which a wide range of mammalian limb tendons could be subjected in life were estimated by considering the relative cross-sectional areas of each tendon and of the fibres of its muscle. These cross-sectional areas were derived from mass and length measurements on tendons and muscles assuming published values for the respective densities. The majority of the stresses are low. The distribution has a broad peak with maximum frequency at a stress of about 13 MPa, whereas the fracture stress for tendon in tension is about 100 MPa. Thus, the majority of tendons are far thicker than is necessary for adequate strength. Much higher stresses are found among those tendons which act as springs to store energy during locomotion. The acceptability of low safety factors in these tendons has been explained previously (Alexander, 1981). A new theory explains the thickness of the majority of tendons. The muscle with its tendon is considered as a combined system which delivers mechanical energy: the thickness of the tendon is optimized by minimizing the combined mass. A thinner tendon would stretch more. To take up this stretch, the muscle would require longer muscle fibres, which would increase the combined mass. The predicted maximum stress in a tendon of optimum thickness is about 10 MPa, which is within the main peak of the observed stress distribution. Individual variations from this value are to be expected and can be understood in terms of the functions of the various muscles.  相似文献

Nelumbo nucifera (Nn.) fiber is the isolated secondary wall of the Nn. leafstalk Tracheary elements which has a unique shape. As the shape of the fiber may strongly affect the industrial uses especially for textile usage, the morphology and structure of Nn. fiber at different growth stages were investigated by several techniques in the present work. The Nn. fiber has spriral morphology with cellulose I structure. The diameter of mature fiber is about 4 μm and the cross-section shows elliptical or slightly oval shape without lumen. These findings aim to deeply understand the structure of Nn. fiber which is expected to be helpful to bring Nn. fiber into industrial use.  相似文献

A new method for determining cross-sectional shape and area of soft tissues   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Assessment of the mechanical properties of soft tissues requires accurate measurement of the cross-sectional area. To date, techniques for determining cross-sectional areas of ligaments and tendons have been less than ideal due to the tissues' complex geometries and the fact that they deform easily under an applied external load. A new procedure has been developed for determining the cross-sectional area by means of an image reconstruction technique based on measurements from collimated laser beams. Using this procedure, the actual shape of the specimen cross-section can also be determined. The results are demonstrated to be highly accurate, and this methodology does not require mechanical contact with the specimen.  相似文献
