This study was undertaken to measure whether young harp seals (Phoca groenlandica) and hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) drink seawater and, if so, to investigate how the excess salt load is handled. Blood and urine samples were collected from
hooded seal pups (n=3) and harp seal pups (n=3) after 2 weeks of freshwater exposure, at intervals during 3 weeks of seawater exposure and, finally, after 2 weeks of
re-exposure to fresh water. Total water turnover, as measured by injection of tritiated water, was 2200 ml · day−1 and 3300 ml · day−1 in hooded seals and harp seals, respectively. The extent of mariposia was taken as the difference between total water turnover
and influx of water through food (free and metabolic water) and respiratory water exchange. Seawater drinking amounted to
14% and 27% of total water turnover (rH2O) for the hooded seals and harp seals, respectively. Further evidence of mariposia was obtained from an increase in the excretion
rate of the urine osmolytes Na+, Cl− and Mg2+, during the period of seawater exposure. It is concluded that water influx due to seawater drinking can not be excluded as
a source of error when estimating food consumption of free-ranging harp seals and hooded seals, by use of labeled water techniques.

Two putative populations of hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) occur in the North Atlantic. The Greenland Sea population pup and breed on the pack ice near Jan Mayen ('West Ice') while the Northwest Atlantic population is thought to pup in the Davis Strait, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (the 'Gulf'), and off southern Labrador or northeast Newfoundland (the 'Front'). We used microsatellite profiling of 300 individuals at 13 loci and mitochondrial DNA sequencing of the control region of 123 individuals to test for genetic differentiation between these four breeding herds. We found no significant genetic differences between breeding areas, nor evidence for cryptic nor higher level genetic structure in this species. The Greenland Sea breeding herd was genetically most distant from the Northwest Atlantic breeding areas; however, the differences were statistically nonsignificant. Our data therefore suggest that the world's hooded seals comprise a single panmictic genetic population. 相似文献

Isometric tension was recorded by force displacement transducers in ring segments of the inferior branch of the renal artery from newborn hooded seals (Cystophora cristata, n=6), harp seals (Phoca groenlandica, n=3) and domestic pigs (Sus scrofa f. domestica, n=5). Arterial segments were mounted in heated organ baths and exposed to graded concentrations of noradrenaline (NA) and adrenaline (A), alone or together with melatonin. The melatonin concentration in the bath was similar to the plasma concentration normally found in each experimental animal. Melatonin alone did not affect the tension in any of the species, but melatonin potentiated the contraction induced by NA in hooded and harp seal arteries to a maximum of about 25% above the resting, pre-stretch level. The selective melatonin receptor antagonist luzindole reduced this potentiation by 80%. Species-specific concentrations of melatonin did not potentiate the NA-effect in the domestic pig or the A-induced contraction in any of the species. The results indicate that melatonin specifically increases the NA-sensitivity of smooth muscles in renal arteries from newborn seals. It is presumed that similar effects may operate in foetal and maternal seals and may influence their circulation during maternal diving. 相似文献

Beach surveys for harp (Phoca groenlandica) and hooded (Cystophora cristata) seals documented a dramatic increase in their numbers on Sable Island in the mid-1990s. From late 1994 to 1998, 1,191 harp and 870 hooded seals, mostly young animals, were recorded on the island whereas, in the 1980s, no more than 5 animals of both species were observed each year. Of the 2,061 harp and hooded seals examined, 41.7% were found alive, 26.7% were killed by sharks, and 31.6% were found dead but intact. This increase in numbers of harp and hooded seals on Sable Island, which is south of their historic northern range, is consistent with the recent increase of extralimital occurrences of these species along the east coast of North America. However, the large number of seals recorded in this study provides more information on their demography than has previously been possible. 相似文献

Beach surveys for harp (Phoca groenlaandica) and hooded (Cystophora cristata) seals documented a dramatic increase in their numbers on Sable Island in mid 1990s. In the 1980s, no more than five animals of both species were observed on this island each year, however, during late 1994 to 1998, 1,191 harp and 870 hooded seals, mostly young animals, were recorded. Although some of these seals had been killed by sharks, most (roughly 75%) were found alive or as intact carcasses on the beach, and some of the live seals were later found dead. Emaciation/starvation was considered the primary cause of death in seals that were not obviously killed by sharks. Factors that may have compounded this poor body condition included gastric impaction with abnormal ingesta, hemorrhagic diathesis possibly induced by parasitic migration and secondary vasculitis, and stomatitis (in hooded seals only). Some harp and hooded seals expanding their range in recent years may be unable to feed successfully, although the reasons for this are unclear. 相似文献

To provide data on the diets of hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) in the Greenland Sea, seals were collected for scientific purposes on expeditions conducted in the pack ice belt east of Greenland in September/October 1999, 2002 and 2003 (autumn), July/August in 2000 (summer), and February/March in 2001 and 2002 (winter). The results from analyses of stomach and intestinal contents from captured seals revealed that their diet was comprised of relatively few prey taxa. The squid Gonatus fabricii and polar cod (Boreogadus saida) were particularly important, whereas capelin (Mallotus villosus) and sand eels (Ammodytes spp.) occasionally contributed more. These four prey items constituted 60-97% of the diet biomass. Gonatus fabricii was the most important food item in autumn and winter, whereas polar cod dominated the summer diet, with important contributions from G. fabricii and sand eels. The latter was only observed on the hooded seal menu during the summer period, whereas polar cod, which was an important component during the autumn survey, was almost absent from the winter samples. During the latter survey, capelin also contributed to the hooded seal diet. Samples obtained from hooded seals in more coastal waters indicated a more varied diet based on fish such as polar cod, redfish (Sebastes sp.) and Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides). 相似文献

Standard hematologic and serum chemistry parameters were determined from 28 harp seals (Phoca groenlandica) and 20 hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) sampled from 6 March 2001 to 13 March 2001 during the breeding season. Whole blood was collected immediately postmortem from harp seal mother-pup pairs and from six hooded seal pups, and from live-captured adult hooded seals and three hooded seal pups; blood was analyzed within 24 hr at a local human hospital. A certified veterinary laboratory validated subsamples of whole blood and analyzed all serum chemistry parameters. Significant interlaboratory differences in mean values of packed cell volume (PCV) and mean cell volume (MCV) were found. Significant differences were found between samples from the five seal groups (adult male hooded seals, lactating female hooded seals, unweaned hooded seal pups; lactating female harp seals, and unweaned harp seal pups) for hematology and most serum chemistry parameters. In general, age-class influenced mean values of PCV, hemoglobin (HB), red blood cell (RBC) counts, MCV, mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and nucleated red blood cell (NRBC) counts per 100 leucocytes, but most age-related variations were species specific. Harp seal pups had significantly lower mean values of HB, PCV, MCH, and MCHC than did other seal groups, and significantly lower mean RBC counts than did hooded seal pups. Mean NRBC counts per 100 leukocytes were more than three times higher in harp seal pups than in hooded seal pups, but this difference was not statistically significant. Mean MCV were significantly lower in harp and hooded seal pups compared to those of adult harp and hooded seals. Differences in hemograms between pup species were likely because of the precocious development of hooded seal pups, which are weaned within 4 days, compared to 12 days for harp seal pups. Among adult seal groups, male hooded seals had significantly higher mean values of PCV and HB than did female harp and hooded seals, and significantly higher mean RBC counts than did adult female hooded seals. Among adult females, mean values of MCH and MCHC were statistically higher in hooded seals than in harp seals. Adult female harp and hooded seals did not differ significantly in other RBC parameters and mean leukocyte counts. Mean values of glucose, blood urea nitrogen, total bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total protein, and albumin showed species-specific variations between adults and pups. Except for ALP, few significant differences in mean enzyme activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), ALT, creatine kinase and gamma-glutamyltransferase were found between seal groups. Mean concentrations of electrolytes (calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, and total carbon dioxide) varied with age class, but variations in potassium and magnesium were species specific. Harp seal pups had significantly higher mean phosphorus and potassium levels compared to other seal groups. 相似文献

Summary Multiple refractive state measurements were made on a male and female hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) when the eyes were exposed to air and to water. The measures, made by conventional retinoscopy and by photorefraction, show that the seals are moderately hyperopic (2–3 diopters) in water and moderately myopic (2–4 diopters) in air. No significant astigmatism was noted in either medium. The absence of refractive state variation over time suggests that an accommodative mechanism is insignificant or absent, although histological study indicates that the ciliary muscle is well developed.Photokeratoscopy, carried out on two animals with two keratoscopic instruments, show that the cornea is relatively flat (30 mm, or about one-half the diameter of the eye). Furthermore the cornea is only slightly astigmatic (less than 1 diopter). The refractive power of the external corneal surface (in air), calculated from a measurement of corneal refractive index of 1.378, amounts to only 10 or 11 diopters. As in the typical fish eye, hooded seal lenses are spherical or nearly spherical in shape (24–23 mm), and have short focal lengths (30–32 mm). Focal measures for rays at varying distances from the lens center indicate that spherical aberration is well corrected. There is no indication in this seal species, of a previously reported adaptation involving a highly astigmatic cornea which together with a slit pupil can minimize the optical effect of movement from water to air. 相似文献

The study aimed at investigation into the first step of language acquisition by Russian children and the imitation process as a possible mechanism of mastering the language through the sounds specific for their native language. On the basis of spectrographic, phonetic, and listener's analysis of the sounds infants, the beginning of shaping of the phonologic system in Russian language, was shown. It was shown that, during imitation of mother's voice, children acquire articulation skills and sound utterances approximating a phoneme category of the native language. The data obtained indicate that interaction between mother and child fulfills the function of learning transmitting a language data on the tongue trame. 相似文献

Sixteen metrical and 18 non-metrical variants in aged Hooded seal skulls from Newfoundland, the Denmark Strait, and Jan Mayen were recorded. Relationships between the stocks were studied using univariate and multivariate techniques, after appropriate correction for age dependence of the metrical variants. No multivariate separation of the stocks was detected and it is concluded that there are little genetical differences between them. Therefore the null hypothesis that there is a high degree of intermixing between the stocks cannot be rejected. 相似文献

The characters linking Mirounga and Cystophora in the subfamily Cystophorinae are the reduction of the incisors to 3 /1 , the nasal sac of the male, and also the general similarity in shape of the postcanine teeth. Because of the unreliability of dental characters, and the possibility of convergence producing the nasal sac, the entire skeleton and some soft parts of the body have been considered. This examination has produced 17 good characters in which Cystophora agrees with other northern phocids, and Mirounga with other southern phocids. Other characters confirming this division, but not considered trenchant enough for inclusion in the table, have also been found.
It is suggested that the subfamily name Cystophorinae be abandoned. The family Phocidae is therefore divisible into two subfamilies; Cystophora being included in the Phocinae, and Mirounga in the Monachinae.
Certain characters suggest that Erignathus and Monachus may be the forms linking the typically northern and the typically southern phocids. 相似文献

In 525 young children the state of intestinal microbiocenosis was studied every month of the first year their life. The study revealed that the process of the microflora formation lasted throughout the first year of their life and was characterized by dysbiotic disturbances. During this period the aggravation of dysbiotic changes in the intestine of these children on months 3, 6-7 and 11-12 was of particular importance. The formation of stable dysbacteriosis led to a decrease in the immunological status of the child, which was manifested by the increased content of such microorganisms as hemolytic cocci, Proteus and a decrease in the quantitative level of bifidobacteria in the total intestinal microbiocenosis by the end of the first year of child's life. 相似文献

The distribution and behaviour of larval and juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) were studied for two years in large, deep Lake Constance. After hatching larvae were transported by water currents to
the open water. The majority of larvae remained in the pelagic zone for about one month. In both years, their return to the
littoral zone coincided with the decline of pelagic zooplankton abundance. After returning to the littoral zone, juveniles
stayed among submerged macrophytes within 5 m depth and lived apart from larger perch which lived at depths of 6–20 m. By
late summer, juveniles changed their distribution pattern: during the day they stayed intensively close to piers and ports,
but increased their swimming activity at dusk, cruising among shallow and deep waters and feeding on zooplankton, and rested
on the bottom at night. This behaviour appears to be related to the decrease of inshore food resources and to the presence
of predators in deeper water. 0+ perch left the littoral zone and moved into deep waters when autumnal mixing began in late October. They overwintered near
the bottom at depths of more than 30 m. During most of the year, juvenile and adult perch were separated from each other.
But as soon as they occupied the same habitat, the occurrence of cannibalism increased. 相似文献

Growth and morphological development of chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.), during the first year of life
The growth and the morphological development of larvae and juveniles of chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.), from a small stream of western Greece is described, based on field samples and laboratory-raised fish. In the laboratory, size hierarchy was developed and morphological differentiation occurred at a younger age in the fastest growing larvae. Growth was faster in the field and differentiation of fins and scales began at a larger size, but apparently at a younger age, than in the laboratory. 相似文献

The fatty-acid composition of retinyl esters in the livers of two species of phocid seal, the harp seal (Phoca groenlandica, n = 20) and the hooded seal (Cystophora cristata, n = 15), and one species of otariid seal, the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus, n = 6), was determined. Vitamin A ranged in concentration from 4 to 1024 nmol retinol/g liver for the phocids and from 381 to 979 nmol/g liver for the otariids. In most of the livers, retinyl palmitate was not the principal ester, and the palmitate + stearate + oleate trio of retinyl esters represented less than 50% of the total. In all samples, the retinyl esters contained 20:1, 20:4, 20:5, and 22:6 in unusually large amounts. Retinyl esters tended to be richer than whole-liver lipids in 20:5 + 22:6, whereas whole-liver lipids were richer in 18:0 and 18:2. Therefore, the pool of acyl donors used for the esterification of retinol may be distinct from that used for other lipids. Birth-to-weaning changes were seen only in the harp seals. In the pups, the hepatic vitamin-A concentration increased 454%, while the proportion of 18:0 and 20:1 in the retinyl esters rose and that of 14:0 + 16:1 and 20:4 fell. Concomitantly, in their mothers, the proportion of 20:4 increased but that of 16:0 and 18:0 decreased. 相似文献

The distribution, movements and diving of high-arctic harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) were studied in Svalbard, Norway, from 1992 to 1995. A total of 14 seals were equipped with satellite transmitters at Prins
Karls Forland (ca. 78°30′N 12°E). These gave data on position, but ten also gave information on dive depths (N ∼ 160,000) and dive durations (N ∼ 162,000). Dive-depth frequencies show that ∼50% of the diving is shallower than 40 m, and that 95% of the diving is shallower
than 250 m. Based on dive-duration frequencies, ∼50% of the dives lasted 2–4 min, 90% of the dives lasted less than 7 min,
and 97% were shorter than 10 min. All but three seals stayed in the tagging area.

This study presents the first direct observations of the movements and behaviour of free-ranging grey seals at sea. Radio and ultrasonic transmitters were attached to three sub-adult male grey seals which were then tracked from a suitable vessel. Behaviour at sea fell into one of three categories: travelling between haul-outs, short duration trips, and resting adjacent to haul-out sites. Travelling was characterized by direct, relatively fast horizontal movement and by V-shaped dive profiles. During short duration trips the seals swam slower and invariably exhibited square-wave dive profiles, spending approximately 60% of total dive duration at the maximum depth. Resting involved shallow dives close to haul-out sites and an absence of directed lateral movement.
The excellent navigational abilities of grey seals are illustrated by the rapid, direct swimming between distant haul-out sites. It is proposed that short duration trips are specifically for foraging because of their association with other piscivores, and because swimming was slow and mostly on or near the sea bed (grey seals are known to feed almost exclusively on demersal and benthic fish). These trips accounted for only 14% of the nine days that seal 1 was tracked. It is also proposed that the habit of diving to the sea bed whilst travelling between distant haul-out sites is to allow opportunistic foraging with only a small increase in total swimming distance. 相似文献
