To propose a concept of their mutual diversity, twenty-nine permanent shallow floodplain pools and oxbows in the river Lužnice floodplain were analysed for area, depth, shape, flooding, and shading by terrestrial vegetation, and sampled in all seasons for their water chemistry, phytoplankton composition and biomass, and zooplankton composition. The sites are regularly flooded, eutrophic, and often shaded by surrounding vegetation. Cryptophyceae, Chrysophyceae and Euglenophyceae dominated the phytoplankton, while Cyanophytes were rare. Within the rich zooplankton assemblage (63 species), cladocerans and rotifers dominated. Correlation matrices and multivariate analyses indicated that shaded and relatively deeper sites had lower oxygen saturation and higher concentrations of PO4–P and NH4–N. Shade and relative depth correlated negatively with phytoplankton biomass and number of phytoplankton taxa, and positively with Cryptophytes and large cladocerans—thus indicating poor mixing, poor light availability and low fish pressure on herbivores. Decomposition of leaf litter increased oxygen consumption, while shade from terrestrial vegetation restricted photosynthesis and decreased oxygen production. Larger sites were more species-rich in phytoplankton and supported Euglenophyceae, green algae and rotifers.  相似文献

1. Using data from 71, mainly shallow (an average mean depth of 3 m), Danish lakes with contrasting total phosphorus concentrations (summer mean 0.02–1.0 mg P L?l), we describe how species richness, biodiversity and trophic structure change along a total phosphorus (TP) gradient divided into five TP classes (class 1–5: <0.05, 0.05–0.1, 0.1–0.2, 0.2–0.4,> 0.4 mg P L?1).
2. With increasing TP, a significant decline was observed in the species richness of zooplankton and submerged macrophytes, while for fish, phytoplankton and floating‐leaved macrophytes, species richness was unimodally related to TP, all peaking at 0.1–0.4 mg P L?1. The Shannon–Wiener and the Hurlbert probability of inter‐specific encounter (PIE) diversity indices showed significant unimodal relationships to TP for zooplankton, phytoplankton and fish. Mean depth also contributed positively to the relationship for rotifers, phytoplankton and fish.
3. At low nutrient concentrations, piscivorous fish (particularly perch, Perca fluviatilis) were abundant and the biomass ratio of piscivores to plankti‐benthivorous cyprinids was high and the density of cyprinids low. Concurrently, the zooplankton was dominated by large‐bodied forms and the biomass ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton and the calculated grazing pressure on phytoplankton were high. Phytoplankton biomass was low and submerged macrophyte abundance high.
4. With increasing TP, a major shift occurred in trophic structure. Catches of cyprinids in multiple mesh size gill nets increased 10‐fold from class 1 to class 5 and the weight ratio of piscivores to planktivores decreased from 0.6 in class 1 to 0.10–0.15 in classes 3–5. In addition, the mean body weight of dominant cyprinids (roach, Rutilus rutilus, and bream, Abramis brama) decreased two–threefold. Simultaneously, small cladocerans gradually became more important, and among copepods, a shift occurred from calanoid to cyclopoids. Mean body weight of cladocerans decreased from 5.1 μg in class 1 to 1.5 μg in class 5, and the biomass ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton from 0.46 in class 1 to 0.08–0.15 in classes 3–5. Conversely, phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll a increased 15‐fold from class 1 to 5 and submerged macrophytes disappeared from most lakes.
5. The suggestion that fish have a significant structuring role in eutrophic lakes is supported by data from three lakes in which major changes in the abundance of planktivorous fish occurred following fish kill or fish manipulation. In these lakes, studied for 8 years, a reduction in planktivores resulted in a major increase in cladoceran mean size and in the biomass ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton, while chlorophyll a declined substantially. In comparison, no significant changes were observed in 33 ‘control’ lakes studied during the same period.  相似文献

Between 1991 and 1993, samples were collected upstream and downstream of the industrial basin and urban centre of Liège. Rotifers and crustaceans (cladocerans and copepods) were identified and counted. Their population dynamics were related to physical and chemical factors (temperature, oxygen, ammonium, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates) and to phytoplankton biomass. The zooplankton was dominated by rotifers; crustaceans (cladocerans and copepods) were less abundant. There was a succession of groups and species, some thriving in the spring and others in summer or autumn. The dominant rotifer species were Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas, Brachionus angularis Gosse, Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) and Synchaeta spp.; B. calyciflorus and B. angularis are spring species. K. cochlearis was present between May and November. Crustacean biomass was important in summer and autumn, but the faunal spectrum and biomass also varied with sampling location. Low spring and summer discharges allowed the phytoplankton to develop significantly. The zooplankton development followed a similar pattern. During low flow, when plankton populations become established, some declines in phytoplankton could only be explained by sedimentation and grazing pressure by zooplankton. Although these factors provided a good explanation of the longitudinal variation, some local conditions (e.g. oxygen deficit, high level of phosphate) also induced changes (e.g. industrial and municipal waste water discharge).  相似文献

Zooplankton in the River Rhine was surveyed for five years at the Dutch sampling stations, Lobith (German/Dutch border) and Maassluis (at the point of discharge of the river into the North Sea). The zooplankton abundance showed an apparent seasonal pattern at both stations, characterized by low densities during the winter period, and higher densities during the summer period, with a spring peak. Zooplankton was dominated by rotifers at both stations, although during the winter periods the contribution of copepods was considerable. The rotifers were dominated byBrachionus angularis, B. calyciflorus, Keratella cochlearis andK. quadrata; the copepods by cyclopoid nauplii; the cladocerans by small-sized species mainly belonging toBosmina. At Maassluis the relative contribution of copepods was higher than at Lobith. Furthermore, the zooplankton at Maassluis included the speciesEurytemora affinis, characteristic for estuarine conditions. In spring, the rotifer density and water temperature and rotifer density and chlorophylla concentration were positively correlated. Furthermore, both rotifer density and chlorophylla were inversely correlated with discharge. The possible role of environmental factors (water temperature, chlorophyll content, discharge and biotic factors) controlling the river zooplankton dynamics is indicated.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the combined effect of water transparency and narrow macrophyte belts on zooplankton assemblages in two oxbow lakes (Krapina River, Croatia). Samples were collected in open water and among helophytes in the littoral zone from April until September 2008. Rotifers were the most abundant group of zooplankton in both lakes, and dominated in the Krapina oxbow lake 1 (KO1). Lake KO1 had significantly lower transparency, lower percentage macrophyte cover and higher chlorophyll a concentration than Krapina oxbow lake 2 (KO2). In lake KO1, variation in the horizontal distribution of cladocerans and rotifers in terms of their abundance seemed to be determined by competition between Bosmina longirostris and Keratella cochlearis, initiated by oscillation in transparency and detritus availability. In lake KO2, with higher transparency and higher percentage macrophyte cover, the abundance of small‐ and large‐bodied cladocerans increased in the littoral zone simultaneously with higher transparency, suggesting fish predation. Results of this study indicated that small differences in transparencies between the two lakes caused significant differences in horizontal distribution of the zooplankton assemblage. Even narrow helophyte belts offered a refuge to zooplankton, although lower transparencies reduced the effectiveness of macrophytes as a refuge from predators. (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. 1. The impact of changes in submerged macrophyte abundance on fish-zooplankton-phytoplankton interactions was studied in eighteen large-scale (100 m2) enclosures in a shallow eutrophic take. The submerged macrophytes comprised Potamategon pectinatus L., P. pusillus L. and Callitriche hermaphroditica L. while the fish fry stock comprised three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus acuteatus L., and roach, Rutilus rutilus L. 2. In the absence of macrophytes zooplankton biomass was low and dominated by cyclopoid copepods regardless of fish density, while the phytoplankton biovolume was high (up to 38 mm31) and dominated by small pennate diatoms and chlorococcales. When the lake volume infested by submerged macrophytes (PVI) exceeded 15–20% and the fish density was below a catch per unit effort (CPUE) of 10 (approx. 2 fry m?2), planktonic cladoceran biomass was high and dominated by relatively large-sized specimens, while the phytoplankton biovolume was low and dominated by small fast-growing flagellates. At higher fish densities, zooplankton biomass and average biomass of cladocerans decreased and a shift to cyclopoids occurred, while phytoplankton biovolume increased markedly and became dominated by cyanophytes and dinoflagellates. 3. Stepwise multiple linear regressions on log-transformed data revealed that the biomass of Daphnia, Bosmina, Ceriodaphmia and Chydorus were all significantly positively related to PVI and negatively to the abundance of fish or PVI x fish. The average individual biomass of cladocerans was negatively related to fish, but unrelated to PVI. Calculated zooplankton grazing pressure on phytoplankton was positively related to PVI and negatively to PVI x fish. Accordingly the phytoplankton biovolume was negatively related to PVI and to PVI x zooplankton biomass. Cyanophytes and chryptophytes (% of biomass) were positively and Chlorococcales and diatoms negatively related to PVI, while cyanophytes and Chlorococcales were negatively related to PVI x zooplankton biomass. In contrast diatoms and cryptophytes were positively related to the zooplankton biomass or PVI x zooplankton. 4. The results suggest that fish predation has less impact on the zooplankton community in the more structured environment of macrophyte beds, particularly when the PVI exceeds 15–20%. They further suggest that the refuge capacity of macrophytes decreases markedly with increasing fish density (in our study above approximately 10 CPUE). Provided that the density of planktivorous fish is not high, even small improvements in submerged macrophyte abundance may have a substantial positive impact on the zooplankton, leading to a lower phytoplankton biovolume and higher water transparency. However, at high fish densities the refuge effect seems low and no major zooplankton mediated effects of enhanced growth of macrophytes are to be expected.  相似文献

Over 30 years after drainage for agriculture, a 2700 ha temporary marshland was recently restored in Doñana National Park. We describe the recovery of zooplankton communities (copepods, cladocerans and rotifers) in 47 new temporary ponds excavated as part of the restoration project during the first two hydroperiods (April 2006 and 2007), and compare them to those of eight reference sites in the surrounding marshland. Major changes in the species composition and abundance occurred in new ponds between years. While rotifers and cyclopoid copepods dominated in terms of number of individuals in 2006, calanoid copepods and cladocerans were the most abundant groups in 2007. Rotifer species richness was significantly lower in 2007, but there was an increase in Simpson and β-diversity in 2007 owing largely to a dramatic decline in the abundance of Hexarthra cf. fennica (rare in reference sites) from 93% of all rotifer individuals in new ponds in 2006 to only 32% in 2007. In contrast, species richness of copepods and cladocerans was significantly higher in new ponds in 2007, but there were no changes in Simpson diversity. β-Diversity of cladocerans was also significantly higher in 2007. In 2006, the species richness of cladocera and copepods was significantly lower in new ponds than in reference sites, but by 2007 there were no differences in richness or Simpson diversity. Overall, 7 copepod, 13 cladoceran and 26 rotifer taxa were recorded in new ponds, including 80% of taxa recorded in reference sites. These results indicate that zooplankton communities can be rapidly restored in Mediterranean temporary wetlands, at least when large source populations in the surrounding area reduce dispersal limitation. They also illustrate the importance of comparing different metrics of richness and diversity in studies of zooplankton restoration.  相似文献

This study examines the relationship between cladoceran species richness and ecosystem functioning. I conducted an experiment in which four cladocerans, Daphnia. magna, D. longispina, D. pulex and Chydorus sphaericus, were cultured in microcosms using different species combinations and levels of species richness. The results demonstrate that even within this closely related group of organisms the effects on ecosystem-level variables, such as total algae and zooplankton biomass, per capita productivity, and nutrient concentrations, as well as phytoplankton community structure, were highly variable between different combinations of these species. Since only four species where involved in this study, species-specific effects dominated the general relationship between species richness and ecosystem functioning. Particular combinations of species resulted in effects that indicated more efficient grazing. These effects, which were most pronounced in combinations including both D. magna and C. sphaericus, were manifested as an indirect effect as the prey community shifted towards grazing-resistant species. As a result, the productivity of the prey community decreased, because phytoplankton species with lower per capita productivity became more dominant. I suggest that the primary mechanism that caused this significant effect was complementarity in prey-size use of D. magna and C. sphaericus. In terms of prey-size range, D. pulex and D. longispina were redundant when D. magna was present and were quickly out-competed by the latter despite higher per capita filtering efficiency. The results show that different mechanisms are important for different combinations of species. Furthermore, the ability of the prey community to respond to changes of consumer species composition is an important factor in experiments in which consumer species richness is experimentally manipulated. The longitudinal distribution and seasonal dynamics of zooplankton were examined along a 200-km section of the middle to lower Nakdong River, Korea. Zooplankton was sampled twice a month from January 1995 to December 1997 at five sites in the main river channel. There was considerable longitudinal variation in total zooplankton abundance (ANOVA, p < 0.001). All major zooplankton groups (rotifers, cladocerans, copepodids and nauplii) increased significantly with distance downstream along the river. There also were statistically significant seasonal differences in zooplankton abundance at the sampling sites (ANOVA, p < 0.01). Zooplankton abundance was high in spring and fall and low in summer and winter. The seasonal pattern of rotifers was similar to that of total zooplankton. This reflected the fact that rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus, B. rubens, Keratella cochlearis and Polyarthra spp.) strongly dominated the zooplankton community at all locations. Among the macrozooplankton, small-bodied cladocerans (e.g. Bosmina spp.) dominated; the abundance of large-bodied cladocerans (e.g. Daphnia) was negligible (0–5 ind. l–1). Among the environmental variables considered, partial residence time seemed to play the most important role in determining characteristics of the river zooplankton community.  相似文献

1. High biomass of macrophytes is considered important in the maintenance of a clear‐water state in shallow eutrophic lakes. Therefore, rehabilitation and protection of aquatic vegetation is crucial to the management of shallow lakes. 2. We conducted field mesocosm experiments in 1998 and 1999 to study community responses in the plant‐dominated littoral zone of a lake to nutrient enrichment at different fish densities. We aimed to find the threshold fish biomass for the different nutrient enrichment levels below which large herbivorous zooplankton escapes control by fish. The experiments took place in the littoral of Lake Vesijärvi in southern Finland and were part of a series of parallel studies carried out jointly at six sites across Europe. 3. In 1998, when macrophyte growth was poor, a clear‐water state with low phytoplankton biomass occurred only in unenriched mesocosms without fish or with low fish biomass (4 g fresh mass m?2). Both nutrient enrichment and high fish biomass (20 g fresh mass m?2) provoked a turbid water state with high planktonic and periphytic algal biomass. The zooplankton community was dominated by rotifers and failed to control the biomass of algae in nutrient enriched mesocosms. The littoral community thus had low buffer capacity against nutrient enrichment. 4. In 1999, macrophytes, especially free‐floating Lemna trisulca L., grew well and the zooplankton community was dominated by filter‐feeding cladocerans. The buffer capacity of the littoral community against nutrient enrichment was high; a clear‐water state with low phytoplankton biomass prevailed even under the highest nutrient enrichment. High grazing rates by cladocerans, together with reduced light penetration into the water caused by L. trisulca, were apparently the main mechanisms behind the low algal biomass. 5. Effects of fish manipulations were less pronounced than effects of nutrient enrichment. In 1999, clearance rates of cladocerans were similar in fish‐free and low‐fish treatments but decreased in the high‐fish treatment. This suggests that the threshold fish biomass was between the low‐ and high‐fish treatments. In 1998, such a threshold was found only between fish‐free and low‐fish treatments. 6. The pronounced difference in the observed responses to nutrient enrichment and fish additions in two successive years suggests that under similar nutrient conditions and fish feeding pressure either clear or turbid water may result depending on the initial community structure and on weather.  相似文献

1. As quantitative information on historical changes in fish community structure is difficult to obtain directly from fish remains in lake sediments, transfer function for planktivorous fish abundance has been developed based on zooplankton remains in surface sediment (upper 1 cm). The transfer function was derived using weighted average regression and calibration against contemporary data on planktivorous fish catch per unit effort (PF-CPUE) in multiple mesh size gill nets. Zooplankton remains were chosen because zooplankton community structure in lakes is highly sensitive to changes in fish predation pressure. The calibration data set consisted of thirty lakes differing in PF-CPUE (range 18–369 fish net–1), epilimnion total phosphorus (range 0.025–1.28 mg P l–1) and submerged macrophyte coverage (0–57%). 2. Correlation of log-transformed PF-CPUE, total phosphorus and submerged macrophyte coverage v the percentage abundance in the sediment of the dominant cladocerans and rotifers revealed that the typical pelagic species correlated most highly to PF-CPUE, while the littoral species correlated most highly to submerged macrophyte coverage. Consequently, only pelagic species were taken into consideration when establishing the fish transfer function. 3. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) revealed that the pelagic zooplankton assemblage was highly significantly related to PF-CPUE (axis 1), whereas the influence of total phosphorus and submerged macrophyte coverage was insignificant. Predicted PF-CPUE based on weighted average regression without (WA) and with (WA(tol)) downweighting of zooplankton species tolerance correlated significantly with the observed values (r2 = 0.64 and 0.60 and RMSE = 0.54 and 0.56, respectively). A marginally better relationship (r2 = 0.67) was obtained using WA maximum likelihood estimated optima and tolerance. 4. It is now possible, quantitatively, to reconstruct the historical development in planktivorous fish abundance based on zooplankton fossil records. As good relationships exist between contemporary PF-CPUE data and indicators such as the zooplankton/phytoplankton biomass ratio, Secchi depth and the maximum depth distribution of submerged macrophytes, it is now also possible to derive information on past changes in lake water quality and trophic structure. It will probably prove possible further to improve the transfer function by including other invertebrate remains, e.g. chironomids, Chaoborus, snails, etc., and its scope could be widened by including deeper lakes, more oligotrophic lakes, more acidic lakes and lakes with extensive submerged macrophyte coverage (in the latter case to enable use of the information in the fossil record on plant-associated cladocerans).  相似文献

Zooplankton species composition and abundance variation was studied in Lake Amvrakia, which is a deep, temperate, gypsum karst lake situated in the western Greece. The two year survey of zooplankton revealed 33 species (23 rotifers, five cladocerans, four copepods and one mollusc larva). The mean integrated abundance of the total zooplankton ranged between 83.6 and 442.7 ind. L−1, with the higher density to be recorded in the surface 0–20 m layer. Small numbers of specimens of almost all species were found also in the hypoxic or anoxic hypolimnion. Copepods and especially the calanoid Eudiaptomus drieschi dominated the zooplankton community throughout the sampling period, followed by Dreissena polymorpha larvae, rotifers and cladocerans. Seasonal succession among the cladocerans and the most abundant rotifer species was observed. The concentration of chlorophyll-a was the most important factor for the variation of total zooplankton, as well as for the rotifers’ community. Dissolved oxygen affected copepods and cladocerans, water level correlated mainly with the molluscs larvae of D. polymorpha, while temperature influenced the variation of several rotifers, the cladoceran Diaphanosoma orghidani and the mollusc larvae. Negative correlation of conductivity with the cladoceran Daphnia cucullata and the copepods E. drieschi and Macrocyclops albidus was found. The differences in species composition found in Lake Amvrakia in comparison to the nearby lakes are probably ought to the geographical isolation and perhaps to its particular chemistry (e.g., elevated conductivity).  相似文献

Annual changes of rotifers, copepods, cladocerans, the ciliate Epistylis rotans, and larvae of Dreissena polymorpha were analysed for the period 1908–1990. Though food resources increased 6–10 fold in the course of eutrophication, only rotifers and Epistylis increased accordingly. Probably as a result of increased predation pressure crustaceans increased only twice. The seasonal pattern of metazoans and protozoans (flagellates, sarcodines, ciliates) were analysed for 12 and 3 years, resp. During winter and spring, large heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates dominated the zooplankton and were responsible for a pronounced - formerly underestimated - grazing pressure on phytoplankton. In early summer, metazoan filter-feeders were often able to cause a significant reduction of phyto- and protozooplankton. However, during some years, phytoplankton declined in the absence of a pronounced grazing pressure. Field data and experiments revealed that predators were able to regulate the density of cladocerans in early summer (mainly cyclopoids) and summer (mainly Leptodora, smelt and fish juveniles).  相似文献

Zooplankton are a functionally important but poorly studied component of western boreal forest (WBF) wetland ecosystems. To characterize patterns in zooplankton abundance and composition an exploratory study of 24 shallow-water wetlands in northern Alberta, Canada was carried out over the summers of 2001 and 2002. Results suggest zooplankton communities in WBF wetlands tend to exist as: (1) small-cladoceran dominated communities, (2) larger sized cladoceran (e.g. Daphnia) dominated communities, or (3) communities composed primarily of rotifers and/or other crustacean zooplankton. The presence/absence of brook stickleback (Culea inconstans) was the factor most strongly linked to zooplankton structure with small cladocerans tending to dominate in wetlands with stickleback. In fishless wetlands, communities dominated by medium-large sized cladocerans tended to correspond with low-chlorophyll/high-submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) conditions. Conversely, communities composed of rotifers and other crustaceans were associated with high-chlorophyll/low-SAV states. Macro-invertebrate predator abundance was not strongly linked to patterns in zooplankton composition suggesting macro-invertebrate predation is not a significant factor influencing zooplankton structure in fishless wetlands. Results suggest activities that spread stickleback (e.g. ditching) or inhibit development of macrophyte-dominated/clear-water conditions (e.g. nutrient loading) may seriously alter the zooplankton community structure, and thereby the functional ecology, of these valuable wetland ecosystems.  相似文献

The population dynamics of phytoplankton and zooplankton in a fertilized enclosure were studied from April 1977 to June 1978. During the first spring period, the rotifers Keratella cochlearis, Kellicottia longispina, and Polyarthra vulgaris were scarce. During the following spring, all three species were abundant. An attempt is made to explain these differences. Food resource competition from cladocerans, and the low food quality and possible inhibitory effects of Coccomyxa sp. were found to be the most likely factors limiting the growth of these rotifers during the first spring period.  相似文献

Plankton data from 1997 to 2005 were used to examine impacts of a managed draw-down, subsequent drought and resulting historic low water levels (during 2000 and 2001) on the zooplankton of Lake Okeechobee, Florida. Prior to the drought the lake supported less than 150 ha of submerged vegetation. Following the drought, over 15,000 ha of submerged vegetation developed around the lake shore and conditions favored greater survival of age 0 fish. The zooplankton changed significantly from the pre- to post-drought period, including: (a) a near-complete loss of all dominant species of cladocerans and rotifers; and (b) an abrupt transition to a community with over 80% of total biomass comprised of Arctodiaptomus dorsalis, a calanoid copepod previously described as being resistant to fish predation. These changes persisted over a 5 year post-drought sampling period. In contrast, there were no systematic changes in biomass of bacteria, phytoplankton, inedible cyanobacteria, algal cell size, suspended solids, or any other physical or chemical attributes known to affect zooplankton in shallow lakes. Evidence points towards increased predation by fish, and perhaps invertebrates, as factors responsible for loss of cladocerans and rotifers following the drought, and indicates a need for future research to link changes in water level to shifts in predation pressure in this and other shallow lakes. 1. Nutrient and fish manipulations in mesocosms were carried out on food‐web interactions in a Mediterranean shallow lake in south‐east Spain. Nutrients controlled biomass of phytoplankton and periphyton, while zooplankton, regulated by planktivorous fish, influenced the relative percentages of the dominant phytoplankton species. 2. Phytoplankton species diversity decreased with increasing nutrient concentration and planktivorous fish density. Cyanobacteria grew well in both turbid and clear‐water states. 3. Planktivorous fish increased concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). Larger zooplankters (mostly Ceriodaphnia and copepods) were significantly reduced when fish were present, whereas rotifers increased, after fish removal of cyclopoid predators and other filter feeders (cladocerans, nauplii). The greatest biomass and diversity of zooplankton was found at intermediate nutrient levels, in mesocosms without fish and in the presence of macrophytes. 4. Water level decrease improved underwater light conditions and favoured macrophyte persistence. Submerged macrophytes (Chara spp.) outcompeted algae up to an experimental nutrient loading equivalent to added concentrations of 0.06 mg L?1 PO4‐P and 0.6 mg L?1 NO3‐N, above which an exponential increase in periphyton biomass and algal turbidity caused characean biomass to decline. 5. Declining water levels during summer favoured plant‐associated rotifer species and chroococcal cyanobacteria. High densities of chroococcal cyanobacteria were related to intermediate nutrient enrichment and the presence of small zooplankton taxa, while filamentous cyanobacteria were relatively more abundant in fishless mesocosms, in which Crustacea were more abundant, and favoured by dim underwater light. 6. Benthic macroinvertebrates increased significantly at intermediate nutrient levels but there was no relationship with planktivorous fish density. 7. The thresholds of nutrient loading and in‐lake P required to avoid a turbid state and maintain submerged macrophytes were lower than those reported from temperate shallow lakes. Mediterranean shallow lakes may remain turbid with little control of zooplankton on algal biomass, as observed in tropical and subtropical lakes. Nutrient loading control and macrophyte conservation appear to be especially important in these systems to maintain high water quality.  相似文献

Research on the diurnal distribution of physical and chemical parameters within a single macrophyte bed was carried out on the shallow Wielkowiejskie Lake (Poland). A non-parametric statistical analysis was used to compare the water quality features in different parts of a Chara hispida habitat including the middle, both edge (vertical and horizontal) parts of a macrophyte plant, and the open water next to-and above the stonewort stand. The obtained results showed a differentiation in the physical-chemical parameters of the environmental conditions within the Chara hispida stand. The greatest variability was found for dissolved oxygen. Its lowest concentrations were noted in the central part of the macrophyte stand, irrespective of the sampling time. The zooplankton communities within the examined Chara bed were strongly influenced by the concentration of dissolved oxygen. It was also found that two main components of zooplankton communities (rotifers and cladocerans) had a similar trend in their spatial and diurnal distribution within the stonewort stand.  相似文献

Synopsis Food consumption of perch larvae and the impact of this on zooplankton were examined in two adjacent shallow Scottish lochs. Maximum annual abundance of zooplankton occurred in mid-May at L. Kinord with minimum values in mid-June. Copepods were prominent in spring but were followed by a multi-species community of cladocerans and rotifers in summer. At L. Davan zooplankton biomass remained high through summer with cladocerans dominating andDaphnia longispina the most frequent species. Availability of food items was a principal factor governing feeding behaviour of larvae. Copepodite stages were initially the most common item in the diet in L. Kinord in 1976 and 1977 and rotifers the principal food in June 1977, reflecting the dominance of these items in the zooplankton. Cladocerans were dominant in the plankton community in L. Davan and constituted the greater part of food intake. Overlying this general pattern there was an increase in the size of food items taken by larvae with time and also a definite pattern of food selection for copepods, with initially selection for smaller copepodite stages and later for larger stages and adults. On most occasions larvae selected forCyclops strenuus abyssorum andPolphemus pediculus and selected againstDaphnia longispina. The reduction in the total zooplankton biomass attributed to perch larvae was minimal, with the exception of mid-June at L. Kinord in 1976. However, predation on particular species and copepodite stages was occasionally intense and may have impacted the zooplankton populations.  相似文献

1. In a series of whole-lake manipulations conducted from 1984 to 1991, planktivorous fishes were alternately removed and restocked in a small mesotrophic lake, resulting in dramatic changes in the zooplankton community. 2. Response patterns in the zooplankton community, which include species and size structure, and within-year community variability, were examined. Variation in the zooplankton community in unmanipulated years was much lower than that in manipulated years, regardless of direction of the manipulation (i.e. decreasing or increasing planktivory). 3. The succession of zooplankton species abundance was repeated in the second removal of planktivorous fishes. The community shifted from small-bodied cladocerans, copepods and rotifers, through an intermediate state with high abundance of Holopedium, to an assemblage dominated by large-bodied daphnids.  相似文献
