Bird community characteristics of three sites with different levels of disturbance were studied using transect surveys during the dry season in a subtropical humid forest in Bolivia. One area had been unintentionally burned 4 years prior and selectively harvested (DIS) 1 year prior to sampling. A second area had been selectively harvested 1 year prior to sampling and had no recent history of fire (HAR). Species richness, as assessed by species–time curves and rarefaction, was higher in both altered areas than in undisturbed forest (INT). In general, frugivores and omnivores were more abundant in both altered areas compared to intact forest. Canopy frugivores, understory omnivores and multiple-strata omnivores were most abundant in HAR. Canopy frugivores, near-ground insectivores, understory and multiple-strata omnivores were least abundant in INT, although INT had the highest abundances of canopy insectivores and near-ground omnivores. Richness and abundance of widespread species with low habitat specificity was higher in both areas that experienced disturbance compared to intact forest. Differences in bird community structure between disturbed and intact forest at this site are attributed primarily to the addition of widespread species with less narrow habitat requirements, and possibly to changes in the distribution of different food types. 相似文献

Between October 1987 and September 1989, the British Ornithologists' Union Colombia Expedition recorded 16 species of hummingbird at Matamatá in the Amacayacu National Park, Amazonas, Colombia. Most of these species were resident breeders at the study site although two appeared to be local migrants. Six species of hermit hummingbirds (subfamily Phaethornithinae) occurred at Matamatá; although very similar in general morphology and behaviour, they showed different preferences for habitat, food plants and foraging technique. Hermits were predominant in the forest, but in areas of secondary vegetation and along riverine borders, "typical" hummingbirds (subfamily Trochilinae) were more common. The study site consisted of terra firme and várzea forest and an area of riverine secondary vegetation and contained around 60 species of flowering plants visited by hummingbirds. In contrast with most groups of organisms, hummingbirds and hummingbird-pollinated plants had similar species diversity in primary forest and secondary habitats. The overall abundance of hummingbirds and flowers was significantly higher in areas of riverine secondary growth. The hummingbird community at Matamatá is remarkably species rich when compared with study sites elsewhere in North and South America. However, random null model comparisons among Amazonian hummingbird communities reveal that they share many characteristics in their structure and show a high degree of species overlap. 相似文献

This study provides the frequencies of four mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups of 233 native South Amerindians in eight populations living in the Beni Department of Bolivia, including six populations not previously studied. Linguistically, these populations belong to the three principal South Amerindian language stocks, Andean, Equatorial-Tucanoan, and Ge-Pano-Carib. Frequency analyses under geographic, historic, linguistic, and genetic configurations using the theta statistic of Weir (Weir 1990) and analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) show similar results. Results are also similar when phenetic cluster is used. Aymara belongs almost exclusively to haplogroup B, Quechua- and Moseten-speaking tribes belong to haplogroups A and B, but the first tribe presents high frequencies of haplogroup B. Yuracare, Trinitario, and Ignaciano exhibit high frequencies of A, B, and C haplogroups, and the Movima present a large proportion of haplogroup C. There is some correspondence between mtDNA haplogroup frequencies and language affiliation and historical connections, but less so with geographic aspects. The present study provides a context for understanding the relationship between different Amerindian populations living in a multiethnic area of Bolivia. 相似文献

Tree mortality is an important process determining forest dynamics. However, in species‐rich tropical forests it is largely unknown, how species differ in their response of mortality to resource availability and individual condition. We use a hierarchical Bayesian approach to quantify the impact of light availability, tree size and past growth on mortality of 284 woody species in a 50‐ha long‐term forest census plot in Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Light reaching each individual tree was estimated from yearly vertical censuses of vegetation density. Across the community, 78% of the species showed increasing mortality with increasing light. Considering species individually, just 29 species showed a significant response to light, all with increasing mortality at high light. Past growth had a significant impact on all but three species, with higher growth leading to lower mortality. For the majority of species, mortality decreased sharply with diameter in saplings, then levelled off or increased slightly towards the maximum diameter of the species. Diameter had the biggest impact on mortality, followed by past growth and finally light availability. Our results challenge many previous reports of higher mortality in shade, and we suggest that it is crucial to control for size effects when assessing the impact of environmental conditions on mortality. 相似文献

Elaphoglossum praetrepidans M. Kessler, characterized by long-creeping rhizomes with entire rhizome scales, ill-defined phyllopodia, linear-elliptic, firmly chartaceous blades lacking hydathodes, and ovate to lanceolate, basifixed to peltate, denticulate blade scales, is described based on a single specimen from lowland Bolivia. Land drainage channels constitute a vast network of aquatic habitat utilized by fish. Surveys of these channels (dykes) in Broadland in eastern England reveal similar fish communities whether the dykes drain grazing marsh, fenland or arable land, though there are indications of poor recruitment in the recently deeply drained dykes of arable land. The species encountered most predictably were pike, roach, eel and tench. In terms of biomass, pike ranked top, followed by tench, bream and roach. Eels could not be sampled quantitatively but they must rank in the top five species in terms of biomass. Ordination and other analyses of community structure revealed several physicochemical and biotic factors that correlate with fish distribution and abundance. In particular, the presence of a floating plant mat in summer was associated with low oxygen concentrations at night and the absence of roach. The composition of fish communities in dykes contrasts in a number of ways with those recorded in local rivers and lakes (broads). 相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. We examined the abundance and oxygen metabolism of epiphytic organisms on the dominant macrophyte, Potamogeton pectinatus , in headwaters of the eutrophic River Suså. Microbenthic algae were abundant in the stream during spring and macrophytes during summer.
2. The low macrophyte biomass in spring supported a dense epiphyte cover whereas the high macrophyte biomass during summer had a thin epiphyte cover of 10–100-fold lower abundance per unit area of macrophyte surface. The epiphyte community was dominated by microalgae in spring and by heterotrophs, probably bacteria, during summer. This seasonal shift was shown by pronounced reductions of the chlorophyll a content (from 2–3% to 0.1–0.7% of organic DW), the gross photosynthetic rate (from 20–85 to 3–15 mg O2 , g-1 organic DW h−1 ) and the ratio of gross photosynthesis to dark respiration in the epiphyte community (from 5–18 to 1). The reduced contributions of epiphytic microalgae correlated with reduced light availability during summer.
3. Both the density and the photosynthetic activity of epiphytic algae were low on a stream area basis relative to those of microbenthic algae and macrophytes. Rapid variations in water velocity and extensive light attenuation in water and macrophyte stands probably constrained the development of epiphytic algae. The epiphyte community was more important in overall stream respiration, contributing c. 10% to total summer respiration and c. 20% to summer respiration within the predominantly heterotrophic microbial communities on sediments and macrophyte surfaces. 相似文献

A study of natural post-fire succession was carried out in a disturbed vegetation around fragments of the Atlantic Rain Forest (National Biological Reserve of Po?o das Antas (22 degrees 30'-22 degrees 33'S. 42 degrees 15'-42 degrees 19'W), Rio de Janeiro State). All the pre-fire individuals of Cecropia and Trema in the area were numbered with plastic labels. In order to check for the presence of new sprouts and mortality, two other censuses were carried out, at 3 and 12 months after the fire. The dominant species were: Pteridium aquilinum, Panicum maximum. Trema micrantha and Cecropia glazioui. Few days after the passage of fire, grasses and ferns spread their area, while the stands of Trema and Cecropia were completely burned. Most of individuals of Cecropia produced some sprouts while most of individuals of Trema died. However, a great number of seedlings of Trema were recruited while only one single seedling of Cecropia were observed during a period of one year. Most of these seedlings died through the year while the sprouts were already reproducing. The uses of Cecropia in places where fire is recurrent could be more appropriate because of its higher chance of survival and faster recovering ability after fire. 相似文献

To understand the characteristics of the ecosystem in Japanese lowland marsh, we investigated chlorophyll-a (Chl. a), photosynthesis and respiration of a phytoplankton community in a brownish-colored pond in Naka-ikemi marsh, Tsuruga, Fukui
Prefecture. Chl. a concentrations and volumetric gross primary production rates ranged between 1.3–57.0 μg Chl. a l−1 and 148–1619 μg C l−1 day−1 during the study period. Higher values of Chl. a and primary production rates were clearly observed from June to September, when the dominant algae were the phytoflagellates,
Peridinium (Dinophyceae) and Cryptomonas (Cryptophyceae), with swimming ability. The trophic status of the pond water of Naka-ikemi marsh was defined as being in
eutrophic condition based on the biomass and productivity of phytoplankton. However, depths of Z
1% showing the productive layer in this study site were relatively narrower than those observed in the hyper-eutrophic Lake
Suwa with frequent cyanobacterial water bloom. Factor-attenuating underwater light intensity in Naka-ikemi marsh was presumed
to be colored dissolved organic matter. Thus, not only phytoplankton primary production, but also allochthonous organic matter
supplied from the catchment area seems to be the dominant factor in the whole energy budget of the pond. In conclusion, we

1. Three floods (July 2000, August 2002, September 2003) and a hurricane (October 2001) that occurred in a lowland forest in the southern Maya Mountains of Belize presented an opportunity to evaluate the influence of these disturbances on the structure of a small mammal assemblage. 2. Four terrestrial and four primarily scansorial/arboreal species were trapped July 2000-March 2005 in six grids over 14 irregularly spaced trapping periods. 3. Community dynamics were characterized more by changes in species composition than changes in diversity. The dynamics were driven by species-specific variation in abundance, with changes in composition generally, but not exclusively, due to the occurrence or disappearance of species at low abundance. Despite the disturbances, species richness remained relatively constant. Evenness within the assemblage was consistently low, primarily as a result of dominance by one species, Heteromys desmarestianus. 4. Effects of flooding on community structure were direct but relatively brief (< 1 year), and varied with the duration and intensity of flooding. Effects from the hurricane were indirect but long-lasting and strongly related to severely reduced food resources. 5. This study suggests that long-term dynamics in the structure of many animal communities in the tropics often results from interactions between direct and indirect effects of disturbance. It also suggests that community resistance will depend on variation in disturbance type and regime, but resilience will be determined by the life-history characteristics of each species. 相似文献

In this study we quantified invertebrate drift and related it to the structure of the benthic community, over a 6–8 month
period, in a 4th-order tropical stream in Costa Rica. Relative to reports from similar-sized temperate and tropical streams,
drift densities were high (2-fold greater: mean 11.2 m−3; range 2.5–25 m−3), and benthic insect densities were relatively low (>3-fold lower: mean 890 m−2; range 228–1504 m−2). Drift was dominated by larval shrimps that represented more than 70% of total drift on any given date; the remaining 30%
was composed of 54 insect taxa. Among insects, Simuliidae and Chironomidae (Diptera) and Baetidae, Leptohyphes and Tricorythodes
(Ephemeroptera) comprised 24% of total drift. Drift periodicity was strongly nocturnal, with peaks at 18:00 h (sunset) and
03:00 h. Our results, and those of previous experiments in the study stream, suggest that nighttime drift is driven by the
presence of predatory diurnal drift-feeding fishes and nocturnal adult shrimps. There were no clear seasonal patterns over
both ‘dry’ and wet seasons, suggesting that benthic communities are subject to similar stresses throughout the year, and that
populations grow and reproduce continuously.

- 1 Riparian plant communities along lowland streams have been affected by man for the past 15000 years. During this period climatological changes have also taken place. The present situation in north-west Europe is a result of these influences so that the choice of reference situations is necessarily arbitrary.
- 2 Dominant abiotic factors that influence riparian vegetation are local hydrology and soil composition, and the pH, lime content and nutrient concentration of the feeding ground water.
- 3 Riparian plant communities are described as phytosociological units. Depending on abiotic characteristics, sequences from spring to lower course and from the stream bank to the boundaries of the stream valley are reported. The Pruno-Fraxinetum association is, and has been for thousands of years, one of the main riparian vegetation types of (lowland) streams.
- 4 In many European countries, restoration projects are being performed or planned. One of the restoration measures is the planting of trees or shrubs along streams as buffer strips. A phytosociological approach, based on knowledge of the local hydrology and nutrient/ion availability, is better by far than the general practice of standard plantation. Such an approach requires research in advance, which increases the initial costs of projects, but can be expected to provide far better results in the long term, and ultimately save money.

Plastid subtype ID (PS-ID) sequences were determined from sequence data based on CA repeats between genes rpl16 and rpl14 in Japanese lowland and upland cultivars. The PS-ID sequences of Japanese rice cultivars showed that there are different maternal origins between lowland and upland cultivars. One subtype, 6C7A, of PS-ID sequences was predominant in all but one Japanese lowland cultivar and carried a combination of the indica-specific subtype 8C8A and japonica-specific nuclear markers for the isozyme genotype. It is probably a nuclear-cytoplasmic recombinant resulting from natural out-crossing and succeeding self-pollination. The origin of the plastid was re-confirmed by the existence of an indica-specific deletion in the plastid genome. In contrast, the Japanese upland cultivars showed two subtypes, 7C6A and 6C7A, of PS-ID sequences. An upland-specific isozyme allele as a nuclear marker was equally predominant in cultivars carrying each subtype. The existence of these particular upland-specific nuclear and cytoplasmic genotypes suggests that the origin of Japanese upland cultivars is different from that of Japanese lowland cultivars. Cultivars carrying the upland-specific nuclear genotype are common in Southeast Asia, but the combination of the upland-specific nuclear and cytoplasmic genotypes which is the same as the Japanese upland predominant type was found in cultivars only in Taiwan and Indonesia. Reduction of flow constitutes one of the most severe human alterations to rivers, as it affects the key abiotic feature of these ecosystems. While there has been considerable progress in understanding the effects of reduced flow on benthic macroinvertebrates, cascading effects of flow reduction on dissolved oxygen concentrations (DO) have not yet received much attention. We compared the macroinvertebrate composition between reference conditions and a situation after several years of discharge reduction in the Spree River (Brandenburg, Germany). Community composition shifted from rheophilic species to species indifferent to flow conditions. Filter feeders were partially replaced by collector/gatherers, which likely reduces the retention of organic matter, and thus the self-purification capacity of the river section. These shifts were associated with low discharge during summer, cascading into daily DO concentration minima of less than 5 mg l?1 which prevailed 74% of the days in summer. This depletion of DO after flow reduction presumably caused the observed species turnover. Hence, flow reduction in lowland rivers may not only directly impair the ecological functions provided by benthic macroinvertebrates but may also act indirectly by depleting DO concentrations. 相似文献

Summary Niche relationships among 11 diurnal lizard species were studied for 3 years. The community appeared to be subdivided spatially into different subsets of only four to six species. Coexisting species of each subgroup were separated further by differential utilization of microhabitats. In late spring and early summer, when food shortage is likely, dietary overlaps between syntopic species were generally low but increased broadly after the rains, when food became plentiful. Because of the high similarity in prey-size utilization among large and medium species, effects of prey selection according to size were generally slight except for very different-sized species. Overlap in the three-dimensional resource space was high between Cnemidophorus scalaris and C. tigris, but close observation of the ecology of the two populations showed many small differences between them. We suggest that the very diversified ecological opportunism of C. scalaris allows it to coexist with C. tigris in a very heterogeneous ecosystem. Several hypotheses are discussed to explain the ecological determinism of resource partitioning within such a community. 相似文献

The honeyeater community of an open-layered forest was studied in the New England National Park over a 2.5 year period. Various aspects of honeyeater behaviour (aggression, social and foraging) were examined during transects and by use of time-budgets. Time-budgets were used to estimate the daily energy requirements for each species. Since nectar availability in the study area was variable, the energy produced per day by the nectar sources was occasionally insufficient to meet the daily energy demands of the honeyeater community. No strong spatial partitioning of the nectar resources by the birds was found. Use of the resources appeared to be based primarily on dominance interactions (interspecific aggression), with the larger species tending to dominate the smaller ones. Smaller species survive in the area because of their behavioural attributes and greater foraging efficiency which enables them to use the sparse supply of nectar on poor days. Temporal gradients in nectar richness may be just as important as spatial gradients in permitting the coexistence of species which use the same resource in the same habitat. Most of the results from this study fail to support the predictions made elsewhere concerning the organization of communities in unpredictable environments. 相似文献

Temperate shallow meso- to eutrophic lakes can exist in one of two alternative states with contrasting foodwebs, referred to as the clear-water and the turbid state. We describe the planktonic ciliate communities of such lakes based on a survey of 66 northwestern European lakes. Ciliates were enumerated and identified to species level according to the quantitative protargol staining technique. Ciliate biomass was on average twice as high in the turbid than in the clear-water lakes. The ciliate communities were dominated by oligotrichs and protostomatids, and no differences in functional composition or α-diversity could be detected between turbid and clear-water lakes, although β-diversity tended to be higher in the latter. At the species level, however, community structure strongly differed between turbid and clear-water lakes, and several indicator species could be identified for the different lake categories. Variation partitioning showed that nutrient status did not explain ciliate community structure independent of the alternative states, while lake area was identified as an additional structuring factor for the ciliate communities. These results stress the importance of the ecosystem structure in shaping ciliate communities in temperate shallow lakes and suggest that nutrient status has little direct effect on ciliate community structure in such lakes. 相似文献
