Within populations of broadcast spawning marine invertebrates such as scallops, larger animals typically have larger gonads. Presumably, this means those larger males have more sperm to release than small males. However, there has never been a direct test of whether larger males actually release more sperm, at a higher rate, during spawning. To address this, we compared the allometry of induced sperm release with that of reproductive investment (gonad weight) in ripe males of 2 species of scallops, Chlamys bifrons and Chlamys asperrima. We did not find that larger scallops released more sperm or released it faster than small scallops, and were able to reject the hypothesis that instantaneous sperm release was related to body size in the same way as gonad weight. Consequently, we speculate that if larger broadcast spawning males do release more sperm, they may do so by spawning on more occasions within a reproductive season.  相似文献

Synopsis We examined the behavioural and biological functions of prostaglandins (PG) of F-type as a chemosensory signal during spawning in Arctic charr. Immunoassay revealed F-type PGs in water inhabited by ripe charr of both sexes performing spawning-related acts. High concentrations of immunoreactive PGFs seemed to coincide with male spawning activity. Ripe isolated males were more odorous to other charr (as assayed by EOG) than either females or immature charr. When these males received chemical cues from ovulated females, they increased their release of odorants, including F-type PGs, into the water. PGF at concentrations of 0.1 nM attracted ovulated females and ripe males. It also stimulated digging behaviour in mature females. It is concluded that F-type PGs or their derivatives are released by ripe males on the spawning grounds to attract females and elicit their spawning behaviour.  相似文献

Summary

The histology of the spawning catarina scallop Argopecten ventricosus was studied to characterize cellular and anatomical changes occurring along the gonad-kidney pathway. Broodstock were conditioned for 25–30 days and induced to spawn with two methods: thermal shock and serotonin by intracardiac injection. Samples of the kidney-gonad-digestive gland complex were fixed at the sperm and oocyte stages of gamete emission and at the end of spawning. Both induction methods elicited gametes, and no particular difference in the microscopic anatomy of the acini-kidney pathway was detected. However, serotonin injection, apart from producing a rough valve opening, sporadic movement (opening and closure of valve), and pronounced foot extension, induced gamete emission in less time than thermal shock. Primary gonad ducts opened to acini to permit sperm emission; at the same time, germinal vesicles broke down in female acini and meiosis restarted. Shortly afterward, oocytes gradually changed form from typically poly-hedral to a more malleable form. This probably contributed to oocyte transport through ciliary activity along the gonad and kidney ducts. Nucleoli disintegration, chromosome condensation, and appearance of meiotic figures were observed along the acini-kidney pathway. Although sperm and oocytes were sometimes observed in gonad or kidney ducts, self-fertilization was rarely observed.  相似文献

Oosorption has been considered an important strategy in many invertebrate species which occurs in response to behavioral, ecological, or physiological factors. In crustaceans, the early light microscopic studies of the ovary attributed a role in oosorption to follicle cells, hemocytes, or phagocytes. In this study, ovaries were collected from female golden crabs following spawning and processed for examination by electron microscopy. Following spawning, several unspawned oocytes which had become dissociated from their follicle cells were found in the ovaries. They appeared to be lodged within the lumen. Such oocytes were observed undergoing various stages of autolysis. At no time were hemocytes or recognizable phagocytes found in the lumen of the ovaries or in contact with the degenerating oocytes. Follicle cells which had surrounded the oocytes prior to the time of spawning exhibited disrupted membranes. Resorption of unspawned eggs appears to occur by autolysis of the individual oocytes. Several of the females who had recently spawned had numerous sperm in their ovaries. Such sperm may have been pressed into the lumen at the time of spawning or during the fixation process.  相似文献

In a field population of the protogynous red grouper Epinephelus morio in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, females with oocytes at all stages of development were collected during the spawning season suggesting that several batches of oocytes may be released over the spawning period. Plasma oestradiol (E2) levels were highest in ripe females whose gonads contained both cortical alveoli and vitellogenic oocytes during the breeding season. Males were still spermiating as late as August, although levels of androgens 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) and testosterone (T) had declined from their peaks in March. A few red grouper with either perinucleolar or cortical alveoli stage oocytes were undergoing sex change both during and after the spawning period. Low levels of E2, T and 11-KT were detected in transitionals. Proliferation of male tissue was not restricted to any specific area of the gonad but occurred in pockets within the ovarian lumen. The sequence of an increase in gonial cells along the periphery of the lamellae, increase in interstitial tissue, degradation of female elements, and formation of a sperm duct seemed to be concurrent with spermatocyte proliferation and the process of preparing the gonad to function as a testis.  相似文献

Anatomical changes to the gonad during sex change in the protogynous grouper Epinephelus rivulatus are described from histological observations. A decrease in ovarian mass occurred soon after the onset of sex change as oocytes atrophied and were removed from the gonad. Blood supply and abundance of unidentified somatic cells increased at this time as proliferation of sperm tissue commenced. As the gonad was cleared of ovarian tissue, the rate of spermatogenesis increased and the lamellae soon became dominated by sperm and connective tissue. Putative Leydig cells, the probable sites of male steroid production, appeared in transitional gonads and were most abundant in the testes of immature males. Peripheral sperm sinuses subsequently formed within basal tissue layers of the tunica and expanded as they filled with spermatids. The process of sex change, occurring as a result of experimental manipulation of wild populations at the start of the spawning season, took c. 3 weeks. This appears rapid compared to other hermaphroditic species and may reduce the impacts of fishing on reproductive output by E. rivulatus populations.  相似文献

All gonads of the Hawaiian dascyllus Dascyllus albisella , irrespective of the final sex of individuals, developed an ovarian lumen and primary-growth-stage oocytes after an initially undifferentiated state. From this ovarian state or from more differentiated ovaries, some gonads redifferentiated into testes. None of 117 individuals examined had a gonad containing degenerating vitellogenic oocytes and proliferating spermatogenic tissue. Eleven individuals had gonads containing degenerating cortical-alveolus-stage oocytes and developing spermatogenic tissue. The size of these individuals overlapped with the female size range in which the majority of the females were still in the middle of the maturation process. They were absent from the larger size range where the majority of females had vitellogenic oocytes. This indicated that the transition toward maleness is likely to have occurred after the onset of cortical-alveolus stage, but before final oocyte maturation and spawning as females. Therefore the protogynous pattern of gonadal development was non-functional. There was no dimorphism in the sperm duct configuration, and all the testes were secondary testes reported for diandric, protogynous species with undelimited gonads. Very early development of an ovarian lumen appeared to have resulted in a secondary-male configuration in all testes, although redifferentiation into males appeared to have occurred before sexual maturity and spawning as females.  相似文献

In the surf clam, Spisula solidissima, serotonin was reported to induce spawning when injected into the gonads. At nanomolar concentrations, it facilitates the fertilizability of oocyte by sperm, at micromolar concentration, it triggers the meiotic maturation of prophase 1-arrested oocytes, thus mimicking the effect of sperm. To further understand the role of serotonin in the gametogenic and spawning processes, we used both immunohistochemistry and high-pressure liquid chromatography linked with electrochemical detection to detect serotonin in the gonads of the surf clam. We found serotonin-containing varicose fibers covering the surface of the germinal epithelium in both sexes. The area occupied by the serotonergic innervation field encircling gonad acini varied according to the gonadal stages (active phase, ripe phase, partially spawned phase, spent phase). We also found large variations in the serotonin concentration between specimens during the gametogenic cycle. The serotonin concentration was correlated with gonad growth: it decreased in the ripe phase in comparison with the previous phase, the active phase. We attribute the decrease to the increase of total gonad mass in this stage. In contrast, as spawning begins, the total gonad mass declines while the gonad serotonin concentration increases to a level similar to that found in active phase. The finding that prior to spawning, serotonin is present in the gonads within fibers exhibiting distinct varicosities suggests that it is implicated in spawning.  相似文献

In zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) simultaneous release of gametes and peaks in larval densities at particular locations suggest that spawning is triggered by synchronizing stimuli. Furthermore, spawning tends to occur only after an adequate environmental temperature is reached. To test the hypothesis that phytoplankton and gamete-associated chemicals initiate spawning in zebra mussels and that the responsiveness to such chemicals is affected by ambient temperature, the spawning response of zebra mussels to extracts from algae, a cryptomonad, and a cyanobacterium and to water associated with released gametes was assayed in animals acclimated to 12 ^C and 17 ^C. For animals held at 12 ^C, only serotonin, a known activator of bivalve spawning used as a positive control, stimulated spawning. However, for animals acclimated to 17 ^C, extracts made from a diatom (Phaeodactylum), a brown alga (Fucus), and a cryptomonad (Rhodomonas) stimulated spawning in both sexes; extracts from green algae (Platymonas and Dunaliella) and a cyanobacterium (Oscillatoria) did not cause spawning. Water associated with either released sperm or eggs elicited spawning in both females and males. Positive controls, stimulated with serotonin, spawned at a high (>90%) rate, whereas no negative control spawned. Thus, phytoplankton chemicals and gamete-associated factors may have a role in synchronizing spawning in zebra mussels once adequate ambient temperature is reached.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of pond-raised Oreochromis (Nyasalapia) karongae was investigated. Gonad histology and gonadosomatic indices (GSIs) indicated a potential for multiple spawning in a season. Several peaks of oocyte-size distribution and several maturation stages occurred in the same gonad. GSIs of 2.5% and 1.4% were recorded in female and male fish, respectively. Three stages of oocyte maturation (primary growth, formation of yolk vesicles, vitellogenesis) and three stages of sperm development (spermatogonia, spermatid, spermatozoa) were observed. With the exception of the final maturation stage, all development phases seemed to proceed satisfactorily. The final stage of maturation was attained at oocyte size of 2.70 ± 0.54 mm and was selectively impaired in some female fish by a lack of deposition of vitellogenin. This abnormal condition led to atrophic oocytes lacking yolk granules and vesicles. Sexual maturation was attained at a relatively large size of 16.0 cm (114 g) compared with other tilapia of the mossambicoid group (i.e. Oreochromis mossambicus and Oreochromis shiranus ). A combination of gravimetric and histological techniques was successful in charting gonad changes and calibrating external against internal gonad features.  相似文献

1. A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using 9-anthryldiazomethane (ADAM) as a fluorescent reagent was employed to detemine the levels of endogenous prostaglandins (PGs) in the central nervous system, gonad, gill and hemolymph of the scallop, and the authors have also verified the involvement of PGs during spawning induced by u.v. ray-irradiated seawater.2. PGF, PGE2, PGD2, 6-keto-PGF. and TXB2 were identified in all tissue and hemolymph, while no PGD2 was found in the hemolymph by HPLC.3. PGF, PGE2 and PGD2 levels in the ovary were about four times as much as those in the testis during the spawning season.4. PGF, PGE2 and PGD2 levels in the ovary decreased during spawning, while, on the contrary, those in the testis increased during spawning. No changes of PGs levels were observed in the central nervous system.5. These results suggest the possibility that PGF and PGE2 are, especially, implicated in the spawning of the scallop; however, they also indicate that a difference between the functional mechanism of PGs in the ovary and that in the testis exists during spawning.  相似文献

The capacity of separated glandular and stromal cells from endometrium and first trimester decidua to release prostaglandins (PGs) was studied over 48 hours in culture. Glandular preparations released more PGs than stromal preparations in all tissues. Stromal release of PGs did not alter throughout the cycle or in early pregnancy but the capacity of glandular preparations to release PGs varied considerably. Proliferative glands released most PGF2 alpha and PGE2 followed by secretory glands and decidua. Histamine (10(-5)) stimulated PG release from endometrial and decidual glands but the response of proliferative glands was greatest. Actinomycin D stimulated release of PGF2 alpha and PGE2 from glandular cells of secretory endometrium and decidua. These results suggest that in vitro release of PGs is suppressed after ovulation and is in part due to inhibition of PG release by a protein or proteins synthesized in the glandular fraction of secretory endometrium or decidua.  相似文献

Sedentary broadcast‐spawning marine invertebrates, which release both eggs and sperm into the water for fertilization, are of special interest for sexual selection studies. They provide unique insight into the early stages of the evolutionary succession leading to the often‐intense operation of both pre‐ and post‐mating sexual selection in mobile gonochorists. Since they are sessile or only weakly mobile, adults can interact only to a limited extent with other adults and with their own fertilized offspring. They are consequently subject mainly to selection on gamete production and gamete success, and so high gonad expenditure is expected in both sexes. We review literature on gonadosomatic index (GSI; the proportion of body tissue devoted to gamete production) of gonochoristic broadcast spawners, which we use as a proxy for gonad expenditure. We show that such taxa most often have a high GSI that is approximately equal in both sexes. When GSI is asymmetric, female GSI usually exceeds male GSI, at least in echinoderms (the majority of species recorded). Intriguingly, though, higher male GSI also occurs in some species and appears more common than female‐biased GSI in certain orders of gastropod molluscs. Our limited data also suggest that higher male GSI may be the prevalent pattern in sperm casters (where only males release gametes). We explore how selection might have shaped these patterns using game theoretic models for gonad expenditure that consider possible trade‐offs with (i) somatic maintenance or (ii) growth, while also considering sperm competition, sperm limitation, and polyspermy. Our models of the trade‐off between somatic tissue (which increases survival) and gonad (which increases reproductive success) predict that GSI should be equal for the two sexes when sperm competition is intense, as is probably common in broadcast spawners due to synchronous spawning in aggregations. Higher female GSI occurs under low sperm competition. Sperm limitation appears unlikely to alter these conclusions qualitatively, but can also act as a force to keep male GSI high, and close to that of females. Polyspermy can act to reduce male GSI. Higher male than female GSI is predicted to be less common (as observed in the data), but can occur when ova/ovaries are sufficiently more resource‐intensive to produce than sperm/testes, for which some evidence exists. We also show that sex‐specific trade‐offs between gonads and growth can generate different life‐history strategies for males and females, with males beginning reproduction earlier. This could lead to apparently higher male GSI in empirical studies if immature females are included in calculations of mean GSI. The existence of higher male GSI nonetheless remains somewhat problematic and requires further investigation. When sperm limitation is low, we suggest that the natural logarithm of the male/female GSI ratio may be a suitable index for sperm competition level in broadcast spawners, and that this may also be considered as an index for internally fertilizing taxa.  相似文献

Colonies of the Caribbean gorgonian Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae release eggs that are retained on the colony surface where they are fertilized and then develop. In December 2001, spawning on San Salvador Island, Bahamas, occurred over 6 d, with spawning by any one colony limited to 1-3 d. With the exception of the first and last days of the spawning period, fertilization success was high, often greater than 90%. Eggs collected in December 2001 had an overall fertilization success of more than 66%. At one site, the increase in fertilization after the first day of spawning correlated with male spawning, but male gonad index was a poor predictor of fertilization success. The number of male colonies close to a female was not correlated with fertilization success. Surface brooding is an efficient mechanism for "harvesting" sperm released upstream of female colonies. By maintaining their eggs at a single location, surface-brooding species can extend the period over which eggs are likely to encounter sperm. As a result, fertilization success is summed across the temporal variance in sperm availability, and the need for very high densities of sperm, with its concomitant risk of polyspermy, may be reduced.  相似文献

Ovulatory female goldfish sequentially release at least two sex pheromones: 17 alpha, 20 beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20 beta P) and a mixture of F prostaglandins (PGFs). This study sought to determine whether these pheromones have different endocrinological and behavioral actions and whether the PGF pheromone, which is released by spawning females, is responsible for increasing the gonadotropin (GtH) and milt (sperm and seminal fluid) levels of spawning males. Grouped and isolated males were exposed to combinations of these pheromones, food odor, and spawning and nonspawning females. 17,20 beta P stimulated GtH increases in both grouped and isolated males but had only minor effects on behavior; because its principal function appears to be physiological it may be considered a "primer" pheromone. In contrast, exposue to the PGFs elicited large increases in sexual behavior but increased GtH only when fish were exposed as groups; this pheromone's principal action appears to be behavioral and it should be considered a "releaser" pheromone. Although males had increased GtH and milt levels after 1 hr of spawning, males allowed to interact with nonspawning females also had elevated GtH; thus, behavioral interactions appear capable of elevating GtH in the absence of either pheromone. The existence of an independent behavioral mechanism which stimulates GtH was supported by the fact that males exposed to 17,20 beta P while spawning had GtH levels much greater than males exposed to only one of these stimuli.  相似文献

The transfer of spermatophore contents derived from testes during mating greatly stimulates ovipositional activity for long periods of time in the house cricket, Acheta domesticus (L.). Since prostaglandins appear to play a role in reproduction in several insect species, and since prostaglandin synthesis enzymes occur in cricket testes and spermatophores, we investigated the role of prostaglandins in the regulation of long-term oviposition. Inactivation of prostaglandin synthesis enzymes in males or females using specific inhibitors failed to block mating-induced increases in egg laying. However, males lacking sperm because of X-irradiation were unable to induce oviposition even though they mated, transferred spermatophores, and had high levels of prostaglandins in both testes and spermatophores. X-irradiation was also used to generate males with nonfunctional sperm. Females mated to these animals readily laid eggs, which failed to develop. It appeared that sperm or a factor associated with sperm induced long-term oviposition in female house crickets. Prostaglandin synthesis enzymes transferred from the male to females may have other roles in the female, for example, in sperm maintenance in the spermatheca. Previous observations strongly suggest that prostaglandins induce egg laying behavior and activity; they may be synthesized by female enzymes that are regulated by male-derived factors.

A mismatch in synchrony between male and female gamete release in external fertilizers can result in reduced or failed fertilization, sperm competition, and reduced paternity. In Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus), males can adopt either a guard or sneak tactic resulting in both pre‐ and postcopulatory competition between males with alternative reproduction tactics. Here, spawning behavior of free‐living Arctic charr was video‐recorded, and their reproductive behavior was analyzed. From evaluating 157 spawning events, we observed that females mainly spawned with a guarding male and that the female and the guarding male synchronized timing of gamete release under sperm competition. Although sneakers spawned with higher synchrony than the guarding male in single‐male spawning events, the average sneaker released his milt less synchronized with the female than the guarding male under sperm competition. Approximately 50% of the recorded spawning events occurred under sperm competition, where each event included an average of 2.7 males. Additionally, sneakers were more exposed to sperm competition than guarding males. An influx of males, in close proximity to the female, occurred during the behavioral sequences leading up to egg release, but this influx seemed not dependent on egg release, suggesting that something else than gonadal product attracts sneaker males to the spawning female. Just before and during the actual release of gametes, the spawning couple vibrates their bodies in close contact and it seems likely that this vibrational communication between the spawning couple, which results in a larger amplitude sound wave than seen under regular courting, reveals time of gamete release to sneaker males. Thus, vibrational communication may enable synchrony between the guarding male and the female, and this might be traded against the cost of higher detectability from surrounding sneaker males, eavesdropping in close proximity.  相似文献

Summary Results obtained with castration and gonad implantation verify that a factor(s) from the gonad is required for development of the female accessory sex organs (ASO) inLimax maximus. In addition, they show that a gonadal factor promotes rapid gonadal growth and sperm production, and gradual or incomplete development of the penis. Although an immature slug that is castrated and then switched to inductive photoperiods fails to exhibit reproductive tract maturation, in two differently designed experimental tests, the brains of such animals were able to promote sexual maturation when subsequently paired with an immature gonad. We interpret the results of these experiments as evidence for photoperiodic induction of secretion of maturation-inducing factor (MH) by the brain in the absence of the gonad. One or more gonadal hormones appear to be both necessary and sufficient for production of sperm and for development of ASO, but they are not required for the photoperiodic stimulation of MH release.Abbreviations ASO accessory sex organs - MH maturation hormone  相似文献
