As part of NOAA's Status and Trends Program, oysters were sampled from 43 sites throughout the Gulf of Mexico from Brownsville, Texas, to the Florida Everglades from 1986 to 1989. Oysters were analysed for body burden of a suite of metals and petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the prevalence and intensity of the oyster pathogen,Perkinsus marinus, and condition index. The contaminants fell into two groups based on the spatial distribution of body burden throughout the Gulf. Arsenic, selenium, mercury and cadmium were characterized by clinal reduction in similarity with distance reminiscent of that followed by mean monthly temperature and precipitation. Zinc, copper, PAHs and silver showed no consistent geographic trend. Within local regions, industrial and agricultural and use andP. marinus prevalence and infection intensity frequently correlated with body burden. Contaminants and biological attributes followed one of three temporal trends. Zinc, copper and PAHs showed concordant shifts over 4 years throughout the eastern and southern Gulf. Mercury and cadmium showed concordant shifts in the northwestern Gulf. Selenium, arsenic, length, condition index andP. marinus prevalence and infection intensity showed concordant shifts throughout most of the entire Gulf. Concordant shifts suggest that climatic factors, the El Niño/Southern Oscillation being one example, exert a strong influence on biological attributes and contaminant body burdens in the Gulf. Correlative factors are those that probably affect or indicate the rate of tissue turnover and the frequency of reproduction; namely, temperature, disease intensity, condition index and length.  相似文献

Bufo marinus (L) has been present in the northern edge of the Darling River catchment for more than 25 years and the species currently occupies an area north of Chinchilla on the northern Darling Downs. This paper reports on preliminary findings of competition trials between larvae of B. marinus and native anurans in the Darling Downs area. Trials conducted in artificial ponds (1.4 × 1.2 × 0.2 m) indicated that Bufo reduced the growth of three native species (Limnodynastes tasmaniensis (Gunther), Limnodynastes terraereginae (Fry) and Notaden bennetti (Gunther)), and in some trials reduced the survival of two species (L. tasmaniensis and L. terraereginae). A fourth species (Limnodynastes ornatus (Grey)) showed higher growth rates with Bufo resulting from a non-significant reduction in survival in those treatments. One of two trials conducted in enclosures (1.0 × 0.5 × 0.4 m) placed in a permanent water body indicated that B. marinus had a negative effect on growth of L. tasmaniensis. A survey of 30 breeding sites in the area found that Bufo used only a small number of water bodies in one breeding season and showed little overlap of pool use with most native species. Therefore, although B. marinus may negatively affect growth and survival of native anurans under some circumstances, the potential impact of B. marinus may be minimal if there are always many breeding sites where native anurans can breed in the absence of B. marinus. A more extensive assessment of temporal and spatial overlap of water body use by B. marinus and native anurans is needed to understand the exact impact of B. marinus in this region.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are resistant to present bioremediation practices. This study was conducted to determine if pretreatment with an advanced oxidative process (Fenton's reagent; H2O2 + FeSO4) could enhance PAH degradation in soil that had previously been exposed to crude oil. PAHs were more readily degraded after incubation for 56 d when treated with H2O2 (2.8 M) plus FeSO4 (0.1 M) compared with degradation rates without the addition of Fenton's reagent during the same time period. Overall, the use of Fenton's reagent as a pretreatment promoted the mineralization of the nine spiked PAHs by an average of 87%. Degradation of native PAH parent compounds (180 to 840 μg of PAH per kilogram of soil) in the same soil incubated with Fenton's reagent for 7 d was enhanced 44 and 39% for phenanthrene and fluoranthene, respectively, but only 5 and 1% for pyrene and chrysene, respectively, when compared with no addition of Fenton's reagent. Pretreatment of the soil with a surfactant (10 mM sodium dodecylsulfate) before the addition of Fenton's reagent increased the native PAH degradation rate 84, 83, 55, and 32% for the parent compounds phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and chrysene, respectively, compared with no addition of Fenton's reagent. Degradation of PAHs was confirmed by HPLC‐UV analyses. The use of Fenton's reagent (OH") appears to have applications in bioremediation practices of the most recalcitrant chemical compounds in nature (PAHs), particularly with the use of surfactants.  相似文献

Greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity is frequently used to assess the mitigation potential of biofuels; however, failure to quantify other environmental impacts may result in unintended consequences, effectively shifting the environmental burden of fuel production rather than reducing it. We modeled production of E85, a gasoline/ethanol blend, from forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor cv. photoperiod LS) grown, processed, and consumed in California's Imperial Valley in order to evaluate the influence of nitrogen (N) management on well‐to‐wheel (WTW) environmental impacts from cellulosic ethanol. We simulated 25 N management scenarios varying application rate, application method, and N source. Life cycle environmental impacts were characterized using the EPA's criteria for emissions affecting the environment and human health. Our results suggest efficient use of N is an important pathway for minimizing WTW emissions on an energy yield basis. Simulations in which N was injected had the highest nitrogen use efficiency. Even at rates as high as 450 kg N ha?1, injected N simulations generated a yield response sufficient to outweigh accompanying increases in most N‐induced emissions on an energy yield basis. Thus, within the biofuel life cycle, trade‐offs across productivity, GHG intensity, and pollutant loads may be possible to avoid at regional to global scales. However, trade‐offs were seemingly unavoidable when impacts from E85 were compared to those of conventional gasoline. The GHG intensity of sorghum‐derived E85 ranged from 29 to 44 g CO2 eq MJ?1, roughly 1/3 to 1/2 that of gasoline. Conversely, emissions contributing to local air and water pollution tended to be substantially higher in the E85 life cycle. These adverse impacts were strongly influenced by N management and could be partially mitigated by efficient application of N fertilizers. Together, our results emphasize the importance of minimizing on‐farm emissions in maximizing both the environmental benefits and profitability of biofuels.  相似文献

Using semi‐natural enclosures, this study investigated (1) whether adult sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus show avoidance of damage‐released conspecific cues, damage‐released heterospecific cues and predator cues and (2) whether this is a general response to injured heterospecific fishes or a specific response to injured P. marinus. Ten replicate groups of 10 adult P. marinus, separated by sex, were exposed to one of the following nine stimuli: deionized water (control), extracts prepared from adult P. marinus, decayed adult P. marinus (conspecific stimuli), sympatric white sucker Catostomus commersonii, Amazon sailfin catfish Pterygoplichthys pardalis (heterospecific stimuli), 2‐phenylethylamine (PEA HCl) solution, northern water snake Nerodia sipedon washing, human saliva (predator cues) and an adult P. marinus extract and human saliva combination (a damage‐released conspecific cue and a predator cue). Adult P. marinus showed a significant avoidance response to the adult P. marinus extract as well as to C. commersonii, human saliva, PEA and the adult P. marinus extract and human saliva combination. For mobile P. marinus, the N. sipedon washing induced behaviour consistent with predator inspection. Exposure to the P. pardalis extract did not induce a significant avoidance response during the stimulus release period. Mobile adult female P. marinus showed a stronger avoidance behaviour than mobile adult male P. marinus in response to the adult P. marinus extract and the adult P. marinus extract and human saliva combination. The findings support the continued investigation of natural damage‐released alarm cue and predator‐based repellents for the behavioural manipulation of P. marinus populations in the Laurentian Great Lakes.  相似文献

This paper reviews and discusses our recent findings on the effects of contaminated sediments (CSs) and related water-soluble fractions (WSFs) on haemocyte function/activity and the onset and progression of an infectious disease caused by the protozoan parasite, Perkinsus marinus (Dermo) in the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica. Sediments used to generate WSFs and sediments used for the whole CS exposure experiments were collected in different areas of the southern branch of the Elizabeth River, a heavily polluted sub-estuary of the Chesapeake Bay, USA. The WSFs were dominated by low molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The CSs used for whole CS exposure experiment had elevated concentrations of high molecular weight PAHs. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and metals were also present in the CSs. No PCBs were detected in the WSFs. In vitro exposure of haemocytes to WSFs derived from CSs reduced to haemocytes' chemotaxic, phagocytic, and chemiluminescent responses to some extent. Exposure of oysters to suspended CSs stimulated neutral red uptake, mitochondrial dehydrogenase production and 3H-leucine incorporation in haemocytes. Exposure of oysters to 0, 15, 30% WSFs increased the oysters' susceptibility to laboratory-induced infection caused by P. marinus. Exposure of oysters to 15, and 30% dilutions of WSFs for 33 days or to 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0g CSs for 30 days significantly elevated the expression/progression of latent P. marinus infection in oysters in a dose-dependent manner.  相似文献

Two new and one problematic species of pleurostomatids, Amphileptus dragescoi sp. n., A. wilberti sp. n., and A. marinus from coastal areas of the South China Sea, are described based on observations of live and protargol‐impregnated specimens. Amphileptus dragescoi is different from its congeners by the presence of an apical group of extrusomes and the possession of 12–15 right and five left somatic kineties, two macronuclear nodules, and a single terminally positioned contractile vacuole. Amphileptus wilberti is diagnosed by oval or pyriform body, 15–19 right and seven or eight left somatic kineties, extrusomes arranged only in anterior portion of oral slit, usually three ventrally located contractile vacuoles, and two macronuclear nodules. Amphileptus marinus (Kahl, 1931) Song et al., 2004 is redescribed and its diagnosis is improved. One isolate which was misidentified as A. marinus by Song et al. (2004) is believed to represent an unknown form, named here as Amphileptus songi sp. n. Phylogenetic analyses of the SSU rDNA sequences indicate that the genus Amphileptus is paraphyletic, but its monophyly is not rejected by statistical tree topology tests.  相似文献

The use of a plate screening technique allowed the direct isolation and quantification of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-degrading bacteria from different soil sites. Bacteria that were able to grow on anthracene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene or pyrene as a sole carbon source were found with numbers between 103 and 105 colony-forming units (cfu)/g of soil dry weight, but only in samples that originated from PAH-contaminated sites. No isolates were found that could grow on perylene, triphenylene, benzo(a)pyrene or chrysene as sole carbon source. Bacteria that had been selected on the same PAH substrate showed a related degradation pattern for both other PAH and oil compounds and carbohydrate substrates even if they had been collected at distant soil sites. Based on these findings the isolates could be clustered into four different catabolic and taxonomic similarity groups. Taxonomic determination of representative isolates suggested that nocardioform actinomycetes of the genera Mycobacterium, Rhodococcus and Gordona represented a major part of the soil microflora able to mineralize PAH. Three new isolates able to grow on anthracene, pyrene or fluoranthene as the sole carbon source, respectively, have been isolated and identified (Sphingomonas paucimobilis BA2, Gordona sp. BP9, Mycobacterium sp. VF1). The ubiquitous presence of a potent and versatile mineralizing microflora in PAH-contaminated soils indicated that the microflora is not the limiting factor for the degradation of PAH with up to four rings.  相似文献

This study is the first to evaluate the results of 60 years of restoring anadromous sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus, to historical spawning and rearing habitats using fish passage at barrier dams in the Connecticut River, USA. We obtained counts of pre‐spawning adult P. marinus annually passed upstream at Holyoke Dam (river km 140), Connecticut River, MA, during 37 years (1978–2014), and we counted P. marinus nests during 25 years (1986–2010) in the Fort River, a tributary upstream of Holyoke Dam. These two data sets were used to study relationships between adult passage and subsequent nesting and to study nesting timing and ecology. During the 37 years, annual adult P. marinus abundance at Holyoke Dam ranged from 15,000 to 95,000, but regression analysis found no trend (p = .50) for increasing annual adult abundance with years. However, during the 37 years, adults gained access via fish passage at dams to an estimated double the amount of spawning and rearing habitat upstream compared to the 1970s. The lack of a trend for increased adult abundance is consistent with a hypothesis of non‐natal river homing by adults. However, the lack of a trend in adult abundance, when many more larvae are likely present in the watershed compared to the 1970s, is inconsistent with the hypothesis that greater numbers of larvae (and greater concentration of larval pheromone) results in greater number of adults attracted to a river. Instead of an abundance trend of adults with years, we found a rare life history phenomenon occurs in anadromous adult P. marinus ─ an abundance cycle with peaks at 6 year intervals (autocorrelation analysis, p = .04). Comparison of passage timing with nesting timing found passage did not affect nesting initiation or duration (p = .61). Annual date of nesting initiation strongly affected the duration of nesting with earlier nesting resulting in longer nesting (p = .001). Time series comparing Fort River temperature and discharge with nesting found these factors did not clearly predict annual initiation of nesting. This suggests a role for day length (photoperiod) as the trigger for nesting initiation (most nesting began annually during 1–14 June, all year mean, 7 June), regardless of river conditions. However, river discharge may affect nesting ecology because most nesting occurred during decreasing discharge when variability in daily discharge was small (stable discharge). The present research on passage and nesting contributes to a new Connecticut River restoration program for P. marinus, which is a keystone fish species in the watershed.  相似文献

Two form ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) genes from the obligately autotrophic, marine hydrogen oxidizer Hydrogenovibrio marinus were sequenced. The deduced amino acid sequences of both RuBisCOs revealed that they are similar to those of sulfur oxidizers (Thiobacillus) and a purple sulfur bacterium (Chromatium vinosum). According to the 16S rRNA gene sequences, H. marinus is also affiliated with these microorganisms, members of Thiomicrospira being the closest relatives. Sequence similarities of the 16S rRNA genes and of the RuBisCO genes among these γ-Proteobacteria suggest a common autotrophic ancestry. An ancestor of purple sulfur bacteria might be a common root of H. marinus and related sulfur oxidizers. Received: 17 June 1997 / Accepted: 14 November 1997  相似文献

This study investigated the length of avoidance response of migratory‐stage sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus exposed continuously to conspecific damage‐released alarm cues for varying lengths of time in laboratory stream channels. Ten replicate groups of P. marinus, separated by sex, were exposed to either deionized water control or to P. marinus extract for 0, 2 or 4 h continuously. Petromyzon marinus maintained their avoidance response to the conspecific damage‐released alarm cue after continuous exposure to the alarm cue for 0 and 2 h but not 4 h. Beyond being one of the first studies in regards to sensory–olfactory adaptation–acclimation of fishes to alarm cues of any kind, these results have important implications for use of conspecific alarm cues in P. marinus control. For example, continuous application of conspecific alarm cue during the day, when P. marinus are inactive and hiding, may result in sensory adaptation to the odour by nightfall when they migrate upstream.  相似文献

Cellobiose 2-epimerase (CE) reversibly converts glucose residue to mannose residue at the reducing end of β-1,4-linked oligosaccharides. It efficiently produces epilactose carrying prebiotic properties from lactose, but the utilization of known CEs is limited due to thermolability. We focused on thermoholophilic Rhodothermus marinus JCM9785 as a CE producer, since a CE-like gene was found in the genome of R. marinus DSM4252. CE activity was detected in the cell extract of R. marinus JCM9785. The deduced amino acid sequence of the CE gene from R. marinus JCM9785 (RmCE) was 94.2% identical to that from R. marinus DSM4252. The N-terminal amino acid sequence and tryptic peptide masses of the native enzyme matched those of RmCE. The recombinant RmCE was most active at 80 °C at pH 6.3, and stable in a range of pH 3.2–10.8 and below 80 °C. In contrast to other CEs, RmCE demonstrated higher preference for lactose over cellobiose.  相似文献

Summary Bufo periglenes, a toad endemic to montane Costa Rica, produces an unusually small clutch of large, yolk-rich eggs. The toads breed in small ephemeral pools that are unpredictable in duration and may be low in food availability. Two congeners, Bufo coniferus and Bufo marinus, occur nearby, breed in more permanent bodies of water that offer more food, and exhibit the typical toad pattern of large clutches of small eggs. Tadpoles of all three species feed on detritus and suspended organic material. By raising tadpoles of the three species individually with and without food I investigated the relationship between egg size (yolk provision) and tadpole survival. All of the unfed B. coniferus and B. marinus tadpoles grew little and died soon after developing to the hindlimb bud stage. On the other hand, all of the unfed B. periglenes tadpoles metamorphosed successfully, demonstrating that the tadpoles are facultatively non-feeding; developmental time from hatching to metamorphosis was significantly shorter for unfed tadpoles than for fed tadpoles, but fed individuals were significantly larger at transformation. Faster developmental rate and larger body size at transformation are both advantageous for frogs and toads, but cannot be attained simultaneously. Large egg size may afford flexibility in unpredictable environments. In pools where food is available, tadpoles presumably eat, take longer to metamorphose, but are larger at transformation than tadpoles developing in nutrient-poor sites. Small body size at transformation (a consequence of not eating) has potential costs, but the large quantity of yolk provided by a large egg enhances the probability of metamorphosis in food-limited environments.  相似文献

Delaware's Inland Bays (DIB), USA, are subject to blooms of potentially harmful raphidophytes, including Heterosigma akashiwo. In 2004, a dense bloom was observed in a low salinity tributary of the DIB. Light microscopy initially suggested that the species was H. akashiwo; however, the cells were smaller than anticipated. 18S rDNA sequences of isolated cultures differed substantially from all raphidophyte sequences in GenBank. Phylogenetic analysis placed it approximately equidistant from Chattonella and Heterosigma with only ~96% sequence homology with either group. Here, we describe this marine raphidophyte as a novel genus and species, Viridilobus marinus (gen. et sp. nov.). We also compared this species with H. akashiwo, because both species are superficially similar with respect to morphology and their ecological niches overlap. V. marinus cells are ovoid to spherical (11.4 × 9.4 μm), and the average number of chloroplasts (4 per cell) is lower than in H. akashiwo (15 per cell). Pigment analysis of V. marinus revealed the presence of fucoxanthin, violaxanthin, and zeaxanthin, which are characteristic of marine raphidophytes within the family Chattonellaceae of the Raphidophyceae. TEM and confocal microscopy, however, revealed diagnostic microscopic and ultrastructural characteristics that distinguish it from other raphidophytes. Chloroplasts were in close association with the nucleus and thylakoids were arranged either parallel or perpendicular to the cell surface. Putative mucocysts were identified, but trichocysts were not observed. These features, along with DNA sequence data, distinguish this species from all other raphidophyte genera within the family Chattonellaceae of the Raphidophyceae.  相似文献

Ecosystem engineers such as burrowing seabirds can increase habitat availability for sympatric taxa – but only if the burrow's owner allows other species to use the newly created shelter site. Our studies on a small Pacific island suggest that an avian burrower (the wedge‐tailed shearwater Puffinus pacificus) is both a facilitator and a competitor for amphibious seasnakes. Video camera inspection of 102 burrows revealed frequent usage of these burrows as retreat sites by the snakes, with Laticauda laticaudata restricted to burrows <4 m from the water's edge, whereas Laticauda saintgironsi often used burrows further inland. Snakes never occupied burrows that contained adult shearwaters, suggesting active burrow defence by the birds. Model snakes that we inserted into burrows were attacked, especially on the head and upper body, and we found one snake pecked to death outside a burrow. Wedge‐tailed shearwaters act as facilitators, creating a thermally favourable microhabitat and substantially enhancing habitat suitability for snakes; but they are also competitors, aggressively competing with snakes for occupancy of the resource that has been created.  相似文献

Abstract The early life history stages of anurans in the Family Bufonidae often possess chemicals that are noxious or toxic to predators. Predators with no evolutionary history of exposure to bufomds may be particularly susceptible to these toxins. We conducted a series of laboratory experiments to investigate the toxic effects of eggs, hatchlings and tadpoles of the introduced toad, Bufo marinus (Linnaeus), on native Australian aquatic predators. There was considerable interspecific and intraspecific variation in these effects. Bufo marinus were highly toxic to some predator species, but were readily consumed by other species without apparent ill effect. Interspecific variation in toxic effects was not related to predator feeding mode or the number of B. marinus ingested by predators, and there was no clear pattern of distribution of vulnerability among species within higher taxa. Intraspecific variation in responses to toxins may result from individual variation in the resistance of predators to B. marinus toxins, or from individual variation in toxicity among B. marinus. Some native species adversely affected by B. marinus appeared unable to detect and avoid B. marinus toxins. This may result from a general inability to assess the toxicity of food items or from a lack of evolutionary exposure to B. marinus toxins.  相似文献

We have analyzed morphological changes affecting the lympho-hemopoietic organs of the anadromous sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus throughout its life span. For this analysis, ammocoetes (2–4 years), premetamorphosing lampreys (nearly 5 years), metamorphosing lampreys, macrophtalmia stages (young adults) and parasitic adults (nearly 7 years) were used. The principal lympho-hemopoietic organs in the ammocoete are typhlosole, larval opisthonephros and nephros-associated adipose tissue. After metamorphosis, these organs degenerate, and their lympho-hemopoietic tissue is replaced by dense connective tissue. The supraneural body and to a lesser degree, the definitive opisthonephros, are the main blood-forming organs in adult lampreys. During larval life, lympho-hemopoietic cells appear in the branchial area, associated with pharyngeal epithelium. These loci are not morphologically homologous to the thymus gland of jawed vertebrates. These results are discussed, with special emphasis on the importance of cell microenvironments in eluciding changes in different blood-forming loci throughout the life cycle and their significance for the lamprey's immune capacity.  相似文献
