The stomach contents of 1015 charr, (Salvelinus willughbii Günther)] from Windermere, of which 658 were feeding fish, were examined. The fish were caught over a period of several years and in every month of the year. The data were analysed by two methods, by a points system, which takes into account the abundance and volume of the food organisms, and by the frequency of occurrence of each organism. Charr of all sizes had fed mainly on planktonic Crustacea (particularly Cladocera); larval and pupal chironomids and Chaoborus were also important. From November to April most stomachs of charr netted on the spawning grounds contained charr eggs. The diet of charr is compared with that of seven other fish species in Windermere. There was almost no overlap between the food of charr, which was obtained in the pelagic region, and that of the seven other species, which was mostly bottom fauna, obtained from the littoral region. Thus by occupation of these two different niches the charr and the seven other fish in no way compete for food in Windermere. Some limited data from six other lakes in the English Lake District are presented, in these planktonic Crustacea are also found to be the main food.  相似文献

The benthic environment and fauna of Lake Turkana were studied during 1978–1979 to determine distribution patterns and associations of benthic invertebrates. Lake Turkana is a large, closed-basin, alkaline lake, located in northern Kenya.Detailed environmental information is currently only available for substrate variations throughout Lake Turkana. Water chemistry and other data are currently inadequate to evaluate their effects on the distribution of Lake Turkana benthic invertebrates. Three weak faunal-substrate associations were discovered at Turkana. A littoral, soft bottom association (large standing crop) is dominated by the corixid Micronecta sp. and the ostracod Hemicypris kliei. A littoral, rocky bottom association, also with a large standing crop, is dominated by various gastropods and insects. A profundal, muddy bottom association, with a very small standing crop, is dominated by the ostracods Hemicypris intermedia and Sclerocypris cf. clavularis and several gastropod and chironomid species.  相似文献

Many species are aggregated at some spatial scale but for some species, due to habitat or behaviour, aggregation can be difficult to assess quantitatively. Here, aggregation of chiton species (Polyplacophora; Neoloricata; Ischnochitonina; Ischnochitonidae; Ischnochitoninae; Ischnochiton) living under boulders in intertidal boulder fields was investigated at several relatively small spatial scales. Closely related species were found to be aggregated at the level of individual boulders, but evidence for grouping at the larger scale of patches of boulders varied. When organisms are mobile, dispersal can have an important influence on spatial patterns. Some organisms, such as marine invertebrates, have a highly dispersive larval phase that can influence spatial patterns of adults, particularly where the adult is sessile or relatively sedentary. Aggregation was compared in two species to test whether different modes of larval development influence spatial pattern. There was some evidence that species with a planktonic larva were even more aggregated than expected, in contrast to predictions based on this mode of development. Both types of larval development (planktonic and non‐planktonic) produce larvae with short development times in these species, so one possible explanation for the grouping habit of these chitons is that they do not disperse, at all, from their natal boulder. The complexity of the boulder field habitat and the cryptic behaviour of these chitons may also contribute to a lack of dispersal. A simple application of a genetic method indicated, however, that philopatry at this scale is unlikely.  相似文献

A survey of the fauna of hydrobioid gastropods living in ancient Lake Poso in Sulawesi revealed a total of 16 species, 14 of them new, belonging to two genera, Sulawesidrobia and Keindahan gen. nov. Most species occurred on hard substrates, water plants or rootlets of trees. Since only the upper 0.5 m of the lake have been sampled, many more species probably remain to be discovered. Already, Lake Posoȁ9s fauna ranks among the four most diverse hydrobioid lake faunas worldwide. The Sulawesi lakes including Lake Poso and the Malili Lakes are the only lakes where sizeable radiations of hydrobioid and cerithioid gastropods coexist. Outside Lake Poso, hydrobioid gastropods have not been investigated so far apart from a single species reported from Lake Lindoe similar to or identical with S. bonnei [Abbott, 1945. Occasional Papers on Mollusks 1: 1–4], which has its type locality in Lake Poso and may in fact be a complex of species. Therefore endemicity in Lake Poso cannot be estimated nor is it possible to say, whether the radiation is of lacustrine origin. The introduction of alien fish has had a severe impact on the native fish fauna. The impact on the invertebrate fauna is not known but chances are that this survey based on collections from 1991 no longer reflects the original assemblage in the lake.  相似文献

An 18-month-study of 40 saline wetlands, ranging from 6 to 336 g l−1, on the west and southern coasts of Eyre Peninsula yielded 88 species of invertebrates, some aquatic plants and a fish. The invertebrates are taxonomically diverse and include 38 crustaceans, 28 insects, 12 molluscs and significantly an aquatic spider, a nemertean, two polychaetes, two sea anemones, a sponge and a bryzoan. Most were tolerant of wide fluctuations in salinity, there being 51 halobionts, 21 halophils and only 16 salt-tolerant freshwater species. Many invertebrates are restricted to the thalassic springs where marine molluscs dominated. Athalassic wetlands were dominated by crustaceans and were of two basic types—coastal and continental. There is evidence of the former evolving biologically into the later, and for some lakes to be still in transition. There is also evidence of increasing salinity in recent decades and already two lakes exhibit severe secondary salinity. Like other salt lakes in Australia the fauna is regionally distinctive. Distribution and abundance of phyto-, zooplankton and benthic organisms in Lake Qarun were investigated during the period from January 1974 to December 1977.Average number of phytoplankton cells was 152,300 cells/L and its biomass was 0.365 g/C/m3; average number of zooplankton was 31.44 × 103/m3 and its biomass was 194.19 mg/m3. The average number of benthic fauna was 19889/m2 and its biomass was 400.22 g/m2 (dry wt.). Therefore, Lake Qarun may be considered as a highly eutrophic body of water.Freshwater planktonic species, that used to inhabit the lake, such as Diaptomus salinus and the cladoceran Moina salinarum, disappeared completely when the salinity of the lake water reached 30–34 However, some Rotatoria were able to withstand the high salinity. The new composition of the zooplankton community shows that the marine zooplankton species include not only Acartia latisetosa and Cirripedia nauplii, but also other species such as Polychaeta, Obelia medusae, etc.The benthos of Lake Qarun is characterised by an intensive growth of few species. The major part (i.e. 93.54% by weight) of bottom fauna in the lake is Mollusca, mainly Cerastoderma glaucum (69·84% by weight).  相似文献

Oligochaete fauna of Lake Baikal   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Oligochaetes are one of the most abundant groups of invertebrates in Lake Baikal. They compose up to 70–90% of the biomass and numbers of zoobenthos and are distributed from the water edge to the maximum depth. There are 207 identified species and subspecies belonging to 44 genera and seven families, of which 160 species and 13 genera are endemic. Many are relict species. The main peculiarities of oligochaete fauna of Lake Baikal are: immiscibility of its ecologically different complexes (Palaearctic and Baikalian), its antiquity and heterogeneity, and intense radiation of the species.  相似文献

While the majority of marine bivalves are oviparous, the two freshwater families among the order Veneroida, i.e. Corbiculidae and Sphaeriidae, comprise species with ovoviviparous and viviparous reproduction. Within the Corbiculidae, the genus Corbicula, which is well‐known for its invasive and, thus, ecologically important representatives, is characterized by (i) a wide range of limnic habitats, inhabiting both brackish water and freshwater environments, and (ii) contrasting modes of reproduction, including ‘planktonic’ development via a free‐swimming larva vs. intrabranchial incubation (brooding) of shelled juveniles. The present investigation of five species of Corbicula from the Indonesian islands Sumatra and Sulawesi, which were hitherto not studied anatomically, adds to the diversity in reproductive patterns in this genus. As a unique feature among Corbicula we here report on two newly observed modes of brooding in species endemic to Sulawesi, (i) tetragenous brooding (i.e. in both demibranchs) in Corbicula possoensis Sarasin & Sarasin, 1898 from Lake Poso, and (ii) prolonged incubation in the maternal gills, with juvenile shells reaching up to 1.3 mm in length and with a well‐developed hinge in C. linduensis Bollinger, 1914 from the Lindu River system. In contrast, a third method is seen in the following taxa that incubate their young in their inner demibranchs only until the stage of juveniles with straight‐hinged shells (D‐shaped): C. matannensis Sarasin & Sarasin, 1898 from Lake Matano and Lake Mahalona, C. loehensis Kruimel, 1913 from Lake Masapi (all on Sulawesi) and C. moltkiana Prime, 1878 from Lakes Maninjau and Singkarak (on Sumatra). Details of the anatomical and histological features of ctenidia are described for each type of brooding, and some trends in the evolution of reproductive strategies within the Corbiculidae are discussed, comparing them with those known from other limnic molluscs.  相似文献

Dispersal capabilities are crucial in how speciation patterns are determined in marine invertebrates. Species possessing a long-living planktonic larva apparently have a dispersal advantage over those with non-planktotrophic development, and their distant populations may exchange genetic material, maintaining a broad geographical range for the species. Recent species of the gastropod genus Bathytoma (Conoidea) are all characterized by non-planktotrophic development, having most probably lost a free-swimming larva in the pre-Pliocene, as Miocene fossils have protoconchs indicating planktotrophic larval development. All have a bathyal distribution (100–1500 m), which implies that their capability for direct expansion on the bottom is restricted by both deep-sea basins and shallow-water areas, especially in insular West and South-West Indo-Pacific. Therefore, it can be hypothesized that Bathytoma populations should represent numerous, mostly allopatric taxa restricted to a single or contiguous island groups. We tested this hypothesis using molecular and morphological characters independently. One hundred and thirty-eight specimens from the Philippines, Solomons, Vanuatu, and the Coral Sea were sequenced for one mitochondrial (COI) and one nuclear (ITS2) gene, and 14 operational molecular units were recognized. When these molecular units are overlaid over shell characters, 13 species (11 unnamed) and one form of uncertain status are recognized: three occur in the Philippines, six in the Solomons and one in New Caledonia. Broad distributions (inter-archipelagic) are uncommon (three species). On the whole, the phylogeographic pattern of the diversity in the genus is rather complex and probably also reflects processes of sympatric and fine-scale allopatric speciation, and local extinctions. The eleven new species are described and named.  相似文献

The mollusc fauna of the early Middle Miocene (Langhian) intramontane Alpine Lake Groisenbach is described for the first time. The shells derive from the Feistring Formation in the Aflenz Basin in Austria, which was covered by Lake Groisenbach. The assemblage is moderately diverse with 12 gastropod and 2 bivalve species, suggesting shallow lacustrine and fluvial settings. Among the gastropods, only Theodoxus crenulatus (Klein, 1853) is known from other Miocene localities, whilst all other species are documented so far only from Lake Groisenbach. None of the Early and Middle Miocene lake systems of the Alpine-Carpathian Foredeep and the Balkan Peninsula displays any faunistic resemblance with this new fauna. Even coeval lake faunas from the close-by Graz Basin have no species in common with Lake Groisenbach. This pattern points to a surprising endemicity and biogeographic fragmentation in the Central European freshwater systems during the Early and Middle Miocene. The uniqueness of the newly described fauna is also indicated by the completely erratic occurrence of the otherwise African-Mediterranean genus Bulinus, which is unknown from all other central European Miocene freshwater systems. After the formation of a drinking water reservoir at Butoniga, Istria, research on the fauna of the Chironomidae larvae was undertaken in the feeder waters and the reservoir itself. Forty eight species were identified, belonging to the subfamilies Chironominae, Orthocladiinae, Diamesinae and Tanypodinae. Chironomidae colonized the reservoir waters relatively more quickly than other groups of macroscopic invertebrates. The similarity quotient (QS) of Chironomidae of the feeder waters and the reservoir is only 37.8%, which points to the formation of new communities in the reservoir. There were qualitative and quantitative changes in the composition of Chironomidae fauna in the river Mirna and in the river Butoniga downstream from the dam after water was released from the reservoir for the purpose of testing the dam. The Chironomid composition of the feeder waters places them in quality grade II. In the Butoniga reservoir the bottom water was assigned to grade II–III, because of the decomposition of the remains of surface fauna.  相似文献

The littoral zone of Lake Balaton and its periphyton-zooplankton-fish communities have been investigated intensively in recent years. Total average number of crustacean plankton varied from 36 to 126 ind l–1, their biomass from 0.49 to 1.86 mg ww l–1 month–1 at different areas of the littoral zone. In general, these values for the above parameters were higher in hypertrophic areas. 23 fish species occurred in the littoral zone with cyprinids dominating. The seasonal food spectra of Y-O-Y roach (Rutilus rutilus), white bream (Blicca bjoerkna) and bream (Abramis brema) were based mainly on planktonic crustaceans and benthic/periphytic invertebrates. According to the frequency of occurrence of crustaceans and other invertebrates, the food composition of young cyprinids differed significantly in the NE and SW-basins of the lake.  相似文献

To clarify the feeding habits of reed fishes, the gut contents of 13 fish species collected in a Phragmites australis belt in Lake Shinji were examined. Six species showed ontogenetic and/or seasonal changes in food use patterns. Smaller individuals generally preyed on small planktonic items (e.g., calanoid and cyclopoid copepods) or small crustaceans (gammaridean amphipods), subsequently changing to other prey items (e.g., mysids and filamentous algae) with growth. The most important dietary items for the reed fish assemblage comprised planktonic copepods, gammaridean amphipods and mysids. However, the relative importance of these changed seasonally, gammaridean amphipods being the most important in autumn and winter, and planktonic copepods and mysids the most important in spring and in summer. Cluster analysis based on dietary overlaps showed that the reed fish assemblage comprised five feeding guilds (planktonic-copepod, mysid, gammaridean-amphipod, filamentous-algae, and detritus feeders). Of these, the three former guilds were the most abundantly represented, whereas detritivores were represented by a single species.  相似文献

The Comparative Productivity of Two Ponds in the Vicinity of Lake St-John, Québec In 1980 and 1981, the productivity of two ponds near Lake St. John were evaluated. One, the pond of Desbiens, did not communicate with Lake St. John and the other, the pond of St-Gédéon, was connected to the lake. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution that a pond could make to the increase in productivity of Lake St. John which is a reservoir. The pond of Desbiens is more productive than Lake St. John but two to three times less than the pond of St-Gédéon. The pond of Desbiens shows an advanced degree of eutrophication whereas the pond of St-Gédéon is similar to the northern lakes by its physico-chemistry, zooplankton, sediments and benthic fauna. If we want to create artificial ponds, for a better productivity of reservoirs, it is important that they be connected to each other.  相似文献

(1) An analysis of the metazoan fauna of Nahal Soreq was made at several sampling stations from October 1970 to August 1971. Relative abundance of each species or group of species was estimated by semi-quantitative sampling, and population structures are given here in the form of percentage tables. (2) A succession of three zones, indicating three degrees of pollution, were recognized: a ‘Nematode zone’ in the most polluted waters, a ‘Chironomus zone’, where purification has progressed a little, and a ‘Proasellus (and ostracod) zone’, where purification is nearing completion. (3) These zones of indicator organisms roughly correspond to three zones classified in a ‘Saprobien System’ manner: a polysaprobic zone (Nematode zone), a mesosaprobic zone (Chironomus zone), and an oligosaprobic zone (Proasellus zone). A state of complete purification or recovery is not reached, and the purification process is stopped in the oligosaprobic condition by the disappearance of the stream underground. The other invertebrates characterizing these three zones are given. (4) A comparison is made of the saprobic zones and their corresponding fauna with findings reported elsewhere---Europe, North America and South Africa. The successional changes are generally similar to European findings with some notable absentees, and there are also some similarities with polluted South African streams. (5) Seasonal changes in species composition and the position of these species along the stream are discussed. There are small changes which appear to be a result of life cycle habits in some air-breathing dipterans and a slight change in the position of chironomids downstream, which is correlated with the winter rain floods. (6) The faunal types and numbers occurring downstream are compared with the increase in algal species diversity, dissolved oxygen and coli bacterial counts. It is suggested that the degree of pollution is the primary factor in the establishment and population build-up of any particular species, but that presence of suitable substrates, availability of food and presence of predators play a larger part where the water is cleaner.  相似文献

Sediment samples from several locations in the southern part of the Vestfold Hills have been examined for their foraminiferid content. Those from Early Pliocene sediments of Marine Plain immediately east of Burton Lake contain little foraminiferid evidence of marine deposition. Those from mid-late Holocene sections in and near the lakes contain good open marine faunas of species now known to be living on the continental shelf west of Cape Darnley.Foraminiferid faunas characterized by calcareous forms are most common, the most prevalent dominated by Globocassidulina crassa. The faunas examined contrast markedly with those in the present Prydz Bay which is characterized by agglutinated forms. The results, in relation to planktonic faunas, conflict with an earlier record of a diverse fauna.  相似文献

Fungal infection of the filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena smithii was observed in Lake Shumarinai in 2004–2006. Two fungal species were found to parasitize the specialized cells of A. smithii. These fungi might not correspond to the chytrid species that the previous studies reported as the parasites for Anabaena species. One fungus showed selective attachment to the akinete (akinete type). The filaments parasitized by this fungus increased in August 2004 and October 2006, when akinete and filament densities also increased. The maximum percentage of parasitized filaments was 3.2% of all filaments in October 2006. The other fungus was usually attached to the heterocyst (heterocyst type). The filaments parasitized by this fungus increased in October from 2004 to 2006. The maximum percentage of parasitized filaments was 20.6% in October 2004. The biomass of A. smithii was not suppressed by akinete-type fungus because of the low percentage of parasitized filaments. The heterocyst-type fungus might disturb the nitrogen fixation, but its effect was negligible due to a high concentration of available nitrogen for planktonic algae in Lake Shumarinai.  相似文献
