Background: Temporary ponds, an abundant habitat in the Maghreb region and notably in Morocco, have a high conservation value. However, they are mainly known from the north of the country.

Aims: The aim of this work was to characterise the vegetation of Moroccan temporary ponds along a combined gradient of latitude and anthropogenic pressure.

Methods: Eighty-five ponds distributed along a north–south gradient of 750 km were sampled. For each pond, all vegetation was surveyed (flooded and dry parts) and the local abiotic characteristics were measured during two successive hydrological cycles. The prevailing anthropogenic pressures were also identified and were attributed an impact score.

Results: Eighty-one characteristic pond species (including 17 rare species) were recorded, with several new distribution data in the southern part of the latitudinal gradient. Plant communities were related to climatic and anthropogenic factors, but mostly to local factors, such as maximum water depth and soil pH. The northern ponds (wettest macroclimate) were rich in characteristic species and rare species, while the southern (driest macroclimate) ponds were more species poor.

Conclusions: In addition to the direct impact of increasing human activity, a further reduction of the floristic richness of temporary ponds is expected due to climatic changes. This is particularly the case for characteristic species which have a high conservation value.  相似文献

Four farm ponds in various stages of Chara vulgaris succession -from the initial invasion of the alga to its nearly complete replacement-were followed each week from ice cover to ice cover. Chemical, physical, and biological parameters were analyzed in order to determine differences between ponds and to discover the biological and physicochemical factors associated with succession in Chara vulgaris ponds. The data were analyzed statistically by intraclass (single factor) analysis of variance, the Student's t-test, and stepwise multiple regression analysis.The initial invasion of C. vulgaris appeared to be preceded by a lowering of the nutrient levels of the pond by Zygnematales growth and by the substrate-stabilizing growth of Rhizoclonium sp. Chara-dominated ponds had significantly lower free CO2, bicarbonate alkalinity, and total hardness readings. Carbonate alkalinity, low phytoplankton productivity, high dissolved O2, low phosphate, and high Secchi disk readings were also characteristic of ponds in which C. vulgaris was dominant.In ponds where C. vulgaris appeared in the process of being replaced, the physicochemical factors were more closely associated with phytoplankton productivity and diversity and less closely with submerged vegetation species.Succession from C. vulgaris domination to a Najas-Potamogeton community appeared to involve shading of the former by the latter and was accelerated by the smothering effect of decaying debris caused by Gloeotrichia sp.In the final stages of succession, turbid conditions resulting from the lack of substrate-stabilizing vegetation and increased phytoplankton growth appear to have discouraged C. vulgaris growth early in the season.  相似文献

The fish species Cyprinidon artifrons, Floridichthys carpio, and Gambusia yucatana inhabit shallow mangrove ponds off the coast of Belize. Portions of these ponds experience a diurnal temperature change from 26 °C at night to 40 °C and above during midday. Repeated field observations indicate Cyprinidon prefer the warmer (and much larger) portions of the ponds whereas the other two species stay in the cooler areas.The hypothesis that temperature is serving as a cue for partitioning within the ponds was supported by laboratory thermal gradient tests in which Cyprinidon preferred temperatures clearly higher than the other two species.The critical thermal maximum (CTM) was determined for the three species using members that had been acclimated to either a daily cycling temperature similar to that for the ponds, or to the mean of the 24-hour cycle (30 °C). Cyprinidon acclimated to the cycling temperature had a CTM of 45.5 °C, which apparently sets a new record for fish CTM. Acclimation to a constant 30 °C lowered the CTM to 43.7 °C. Floridichthys and Gambusia acclimated to the cycled temperature had CTMs of 43.9 and 43.3 °C respectively, and 42.5 and 42.6 °C for those acclimated to 30 °C.All three species appear to have the ability to tolerate the high temperatures throughout the ponds but only Cyprinidon utilize the whole pond during the day. This may help to explain the large populations of Cyprinodon found in these mangrove ponds compared to the other species.  相似文献

The species diversity and distribution of rotifers between different habitats (elodeids, helophytes and open water) of 34 field and 31 forest ponds, differing in regard to origin, size, depth, macrophyte cover, overshading and the presence of fish were examined (N = 381). 197 taxa were found in both types of ponds with 32 species being rare, endangered or new to Polish fauna. The species composition and Shannon‐Wiener index distribution reflected heterogeinity of the habitats, while rotifer mean densities revealed a reverse pattern in both types of water bodies. The great variability of limnological features contributed to a lack of significant differences in rotifer abundance between both types of water bodies. Although some rotifers preferred one specific type of water body (forest vs. field), the type of habitat was a much stronger predictor of their distribution, which reflects a necessity to examine ponds in relation to their microhabitats created by various macrophytes. Rotifers revealed a strict division into two groups – of pelagic origin (e.g., Polyarthra vulgaris), which were attributed to the open water and helophytes, and of littoral origin (e.g., Lepadella patella), which were associated with elodeids, biomass of a plant habitat and a lack of fish. The selective choice of the most complex habitat (elodeids) by only littoral species suggests the weak impact of fish in the studied ponds and the most advantageous conditions for littoral rotifers among such a habitat. The distribution patterns of macrobenthic invertebrate assemblages at different spatial scales and in relation to natural and anthropogenic disturbance gradients were investigated in the Pialassa Baiona, a eutrophic and polluted brackish coastal lagoon located along the Italian coast of the northern Adriatic Sea. This coastal lagoon shows a complex physiography with several shallow water ponds and channels separated by discontinuous artificial embankments. Environmental variables and macrobenthic invertebrate assemblages showed higher heterogeneity at small spatial scale (i.e. within channels and ponds). Distinction between channels and ponds is only weakly supported by the distribution patterns of macrobenthic assemblages. Depth was the major factor in structuring benthic communities within ponds, while species distributions along the channels were strongly correlated with the anthropogenic disturbance gradient. Anthropogenic disturbance mainly affected species richness, which was inversely correlated with the organic carbon contents in the sediments and the water surface temperature, which is affected by the input of cooling water from two thermal power plants. Some opportunistic species, like the polychaetes Streblospio shrubsolii and Capitella capitata, were more abundant in the southern polluted areas. In particular, the abundance of S. shrubsolii significantly increased with organic carbon contents in the sediments and water surface temperature, while C. capitata was more abundant in the warmed sites and close to sewages. Conversely, the abundance of the amphipod Corophium insidiosum was inversely related to organic carbon contents.  相似文献

Species-rich plant communities characteristic for succession from mesotrophic open water to fen are very rare in The Netherlands. These vegetation types used to occur in turf ponds in the low lying peatland area, created by peat dredging and filled with water due to seepage of mesotrophic, well-buffered groundwater. One of the goals of the National Nature Policy Plan is to create new opportunities for the initial terrestrialization communities through ecological engineering, e.g., restoration and creation of open water habitats. Restoration of the abiotic conditions in acidified floating fen communities is only possible by a combined measure of removal of the Sphagnum-layer and superficial drainage of surplus rain water. New turfponds have been excavated. This study showed that the abiotic conditions (i.e., water depth and water chemistry) are favorable for the development of aquatic communities characteristic of mesotrophic conditions. The aquatic plant species found in the new ponds also point in this direction, e.g., Chara major and Ch. delicatula are very abundant as are seven Potamogeton species. It is concluded that a constant discharge of groundwater and a good connectivity between the ponds and the existing remnants of plant communities desired in the area are essential for the conservation and development of these species-rich plant communities.  相似文献

1. In the life cycle of monogonont rotifers it is generally assumed that diapausing eggs invariably hatch into amictic stem females which produce female offspring parthenogenetically. Diapausing eggs are only produced by later generations after sexual reproduction has been induced by environmental cues. 2. We show that populations of an undescribed Hexarthra species inhabiting small temporary ponds in the Chihuahuan Desert deviate from this life cycle pattern. These ponds may dry within days and up to 85% of females were mictic. Females producing male offspring and diapausing eggs were observed 1 or 2 days, respectively, after ponds had filled with water. 3. Under laboratory conditions, 7–46% of females hatching from re‐hydrated sediments were sexual. Male offspring of these females can fertilise other mictic stem females leading to diapausing egg formation. In laboratory experiments, females produced fully developed diapausing eggs within 1.9 days at 20 °C and 1.2 days at 30 °C. 4. In addition, embryonic development time (1.1–0.3 days at temperatures between 12 and 30 °C) and juvenile period (2.1–0.5 days for the same temperature range) are shorter than those of other rotifer species. In short‐lived habitats, the potential for rapid population development and production of new diapausing eggs may be crucial in the long‐term survival of populations.  相似文献

Plant communities were examined in ponds in Brittany (north-west France) and then classified into six types reflecting different trophic levels: oligotrophic, oligodystrophic, mesotrophic, meso-dystrophic, meso-eutrophic an eutrophic. In 45 of these ponds, aquatic snails were sampled in order to determine the relationship between the gastropod species richness and the water trophic levels as indicated by plant community types. The second aim of this study was to determine whether some gastropod species were characteristic of a particular trophic level. The number of plant communities in the ponds was also taken into consideration.A trophic gradient was found along the F1 axis on the principal plane of the correspondence analyses. The species richnesses low or zero and especially the lymneid, Lymnaea glabra were close to the oligo-dystrophic and oligotrophic communities. In contrast, the highest numbers of snail species (5 and above) were found in the most eutrophic ponds where Hippeutis complanatus, Planorbis planorbis, Lymnaea stagnalis and Planorbarius corneus were particularly common. The latter species inhabited the ponds including on average the greatest number of macrophyte communities but no significant differences were found between snail species. The ponds which contained the greatest numbers of plant communities included the richest gastropod communities (7 and more) but also the poorest ones (0 or 1 species). 1. Understanding the factors underlying the abundance and distribution of species requires the consideration of a complex suite of interacting biotic and abiotic factors operating on multiple spatial and temporal scales. Larval mosquitoes inhabiting small human-constructed ponds represent a unique opportunity to investigate the relative importance of these structuring mechanisms while simultaneously generating applied knowledge on mosquito control. 2. A multi-year field survey of 32 stormwater ponds was conducted in central Illinois (Champaign County). From each pond, data were collected on pond structure type and hydroperiod, the presence/absence of cattails (Typha spp.), and measures of total nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon, and chlorophyll a. The communities of crustacean zooplankton and aquatic insects were characterised, and these taxa were assigned into two main groups: predators and competitors of larval mosquitoes. Structural equation modelling was used to explore the direct and indirect effects of these biotic and abiotic factors on larval density for three species of culicine mosquitoes (Culex pipiens, Culex restuans, and Aedes vexans). 3. Hydroperiod had an indirect negative effect on C. pipiens density. However, this effect was mediated by predator density; more permanent ponds had more predators, which therefore reduced the density of C. pipiens larvae. Aedes vexans density was positively correlated with predator density. No predictor variables were found that explained variation in C. restuans density. 4. This study show that the relative importance of these biotic and abiotic factors varies among species of culicine mosquitoes inhabiting stormwater ponds.  相似文献

Summary As a result of the reconstruction of a dike on the Dutch island of Texel two small areas of the Wadden Sea were embanked in 1977 and 1978. In 1981 both by now blocked brackish waters were investigated for macrofauna and macroflora. The vegetation on these former parts of the Wadden Sea was still in a colonizing state. Many small patches ofRuppia spp. were found, contrary to older brackish waters with more extendedRuppia beds. The striking dominance ofR.maritima agrees with its large seed production enabling to colonize quickly new areas. In one of the ponds, where the maximum salinity of 23 Cl exceeded far the tolerance limit of this species given in the literature (15 Cl),R.maritima was still more numerous thanR.cirrhosa, a species which is more tolerant to salinity fluctuations. Several years after isolation these areas are still inhabited by a few Wadden Sea macrofauna species (e.g. Carcinus maenas, Hydrobia ulvae andCapitella capitata) who managed to survive the drastic environmental changes. In addition, a large number of species characteristic for blocked brackish waters has already colonized the new ponds. One of the two, that has always completely been isolated from other inland water, was inhabited in 1981 by 13 brackish water species. In the future the two new ponds on Texel are expected to loose their pioneer characteristics. There are reasons to expect that most of the Wadden Sea macrofauna relics will soon become extinct. A more extendedRuppia vegetation will probably develop together with a relative increase ofRuppia cirrhosa.  相似文献

The turbellarian predator Mesostoma ehrenbergii, a common inhabitant of fishless ponds of northern Patagonia, can consume prey larger than 1 mm. Because the feeding strategy of M. ehrenbergii includes mucus trapping and external digestion, this predator may exploit a broad range of prey sizes. We hypothesize that M. ehrenbergii could exert a strong effect on zooplankton composition and body size spectra in Patagonian fishless ponds. We investigated this hypothesis by analyzing the crustacean zooplankton composition and size spectra in five fishless ponds of northern Patagonia, and we carried out experiments to assess predation rates of M. ehrenbergii on potential prey species from 0.8 mm to 6 mm. These ponds were colonized by macrophytes, which favored habitat heterogeneity, especially in the smaller ponds that had higher species richness. The surveyed ponds showed distinctive crustacean zooplankton assemblages and sizes, but all were dominated by calanoid copepods of the genus Boeckella. Our results indicated that M. ehrenbergii consumed the whole size range of offered prey, from ∼0.8 mm (Ceriodaphnia dubia) to ∼6 mm (Parabroteas sarsi). Predation rates were higher for intermediate‐bodied copepods (∼1.5 mm) and C. dubia (0.8 mm), but we did not find conclusive evidence that variations in size spectra of crustacean zooplankton are a result of M. ehrenbergii predation. We suggest that an interaction between prey body size and its evasion tactic might be important to determine the true effect Mesostoma on zooplankters. The structural complexity created by macrophytes in Patagonian fishless ponds may also help account for the lack of a strong predation effect of Mesostoma in the field survey. Species composition, density, diversity, and dominance structure in gastrotrich assemblages were studied in three lakes (dystrophic, -mesotrophic, and polytrophic) and in three small ponds of different trophic status, situated in eastern Poland. The -mesotrophic lake (the only lake with a complete lacustrine zonation) was inhabited by the species-richest assemblage (31 species), the number of species being by 26–45% higher than that found in the remaining water bodies studied. Chaetonotus oculifer, C. similis, and Lepidodermella squamata were found to occur in the lakes only, while C. ophiogaster, C. rafalskii and C. rectaculeatus were recorded only in the ponds. C. disjunctus and C. macrochaetus were common eurytopic species. Two Sphagnum bogdwellers: C. acanthodes and Ichthydium forficula, were found to occur in the lakes and ponds sampled and in the -mesotrophic lake littoral, respectively. Dasydytid species were present in one of the ponds only, no dasydytids being found in the three lakes studied.  相似文献

The colonization of newly constructed fish-ponds with phytoplankton is considered to be the result of inoculation by influents, airplankton and piscicultural measures. A considerable number of remarkable or new species have been observed, but bluegreen algae were extremely rare. The lack of a distinct seasonal succession in phytoplankton composition is attributed to the astatic character of the ponds. The following species are characteristic of the phytoplankton communities observed: Chlamydomonas sp., Chlorogonium elongatum v. plurivacuolatum, Cryptomonas sp., Cyclotella meneghiniana, C. pseudostelligera, Melosira varians, Pandorina morum.  相似文献

Gross and net primary production together with chlorophyll-a biomass were investigated with respect to depth and diurnal changes in three categories of inland waters (reservoirs, temporary ponds, brackish water lagoons) in Sri Lanka. Ten field sites, in both the dry and wet zones of the island, were investigated. Bimodal productivity profiles were recorded in two of the three reservoirs studied. The diel pattern of net photosynthetic rate varied between sites although peak photosynthetic efficiency occurred at solar noon. Surface photoinhibition was characteristic of the reservoirs and brackish water lagoons but not of the temporary ponds. Mean gross primary production was 3.02 g C m–2 d–1 but was higher in the temporary ponds than in the reservoirs. The gross primary production in the brackish water Koggala Lagoon at 0.08 g C m–2 d–1 is a record low for tropical lagoons and was 2.5 times less than the two other lagoons investigated. Variability in net primary production between sites was similar to the variation in gross production with a relatively low mean value for tropical inland waters of 0.495 C m–2 d–1. Mean maximum photosynthetic rate was 0.30 mg C m–3 h–1 but was lower in the reservoirs than in the temporary ponds and lagoons.  相似文献

1. The creation or severe disturbance of habitat patches is generally followed by a phase of community (re)assembly. After such an event, the trajectory of community assembly in habitat patches may be highly variable because of stochasticity during the dispersal and colonization process. Conversely, assembly patterns may also be deterministic if communities are shaped by prevalent environmental conditions in the habitat patches (species sorting), or by systematic differences in the dispersal capacities of species. 2. In this study, we investigated the pattern of community assembly of zooplankton species in 25 newly created ponds at 13 different sites in Flanders (Belgium). Over a period of three consecutive years, we assessed at what rate and with what frequency species of the regional species pool colonized the newly created ponds. We also studied the development of community structure over time and tested whether the dynamics were consistent across different ponds at the different locations. In addition, we characterized the dynamics of metacommunity features, such as alpha, beta and gamma diversity in clusters of ponds. 3. Even within the first year after their creation, the new ponds were rapidly colonized by a small subset of species from the regional species pool (Daphnia obtusa, Chydorus sphaericus and Simocephalus vetulus). These species dominated the cladoceran assemblages during the subsequent years. Other species in the regional species pools were only sporadically able to colonize ponds. 4. During the entire study period, we observed no significant shifts in species lists or in the occurrences of species among years. The low incidence of the majority of species may be the result of dispersal limitation or the failure of immigrants to establish due to priority effects exerted by the first colonizers. There was, nevertheless, a consistent change in the relative abundance of species, which was most probably mediated by differences in the hatching time among species influencing species composition in the first year. 5. In contrast to expectations, we observed no increase in average alpha diversity (local species richness) and gamma diversity (total richness of entire pond clusters) during the course of the study period. Beta diversity was relatively low from the beginning and remained constant throughout the study period. These deterministic patterns can mainly be attributed to the dominance of the three first colonizing species and the low success rate of other species in colonizing the ponds.  相似文献

The composition of semi-aquatic bug communities from eight permanent ponds from southern Transylvania was investigated between 2001 and 2004. Three of the ponds were sampled repeatedly throughout the active period of the year, while the other five were sampled only once. Microvelia reticulata (Burmeister, 1835) and Gerris argentatus Schummel, 1832 were the dominant species from the thoroughly investigated habitats. Statistical analysis proved that each of the sampled species has specific habitat preferences in relation to the modifications of the hydrological regime of the ponds (reflected by the modifications of open water areas, station sizes, and percentages of vegetation coverage). The results, obtained from the three habitats investigated throughout the active period, were confirmed by the samples taken from the other five habitats opening the discussion about the use of semi-aquatic bug communities as bioindicators of the hydrological regime for permanent ponds.  相似文献

Most of the freshwater component of the Earth's surface is composed of shallow tundra ponds. These high latitude ecosystems have been exposed to a variety of abiotic disturbances associated with recent environmental change. However, the biological significance of these changes remains poorly understood. Here, we characterize the abiotic disturbance to the shallow tundra ponds of northwest Alaska. We used historical aerial imagery to determine that up to 53% of the sampled ponds have formed during the recent warmer decades (since the 1970s). We discovered that two top predator species (phantom midges of the genus Chaoborus) of the freshwater zooplankton have recently undergone range expansion, forming widespread (a scale of hundreds of km) stable tundra populations. We assessed the population persistence of these boreal predators by longitudinal sampling over 14 yr. Recent thaw ponds had significantly dissimilar zooplankton communities to communities of ponds that formed before 1950. Both predator and herbivore species differed by age of pond. Younger pond ages and warmer surface temperatures were the significant predictors of the presence of temperate Chaoborus americanus in tundra ponds. Ponds containing tundra populations of C. americanus and C. cf. flavicans were associated with recent formation (83–90%). Recent ponds in river valleys appeared more important than recent ponds near roads as colonization corridors for C. americanus. Only 24% of the tundra keystone predator, Heterocope septentrionalis, populations were from recent ponds. Our results suggest that climate‐associated disturbance can lead to a widespread stable range expansion of boreal species despite the propinquity of older ponds with top‐down control exerted by an endemic keystone predator.  相似文献

Some of the species within the genus Cyclops O. F. Müller, 1785 can only be determined exactly by combining different methods and techniques. Based on the comprehensive analysis of morphometrical data, some populations in periodical ponds near Lake Constance were examined for their pattern of chromatin diminution and were compared by enzyme electrophoresis. These studies provided evidence of two new species. Together with C. furcifer Claus, 1857 and C. vicinus Uljanin, 1875 one of the ponds (‘Litzelsee’) was inhabited by four Cyclops species. In addition to morphological differences and distinct electrophoretic characteristics, C. furcifer and the new species differ in the timing of their chromatin diminution: C. singularis in the fourth, C. heberti in the fifth, and C. furcifer in the sixth cleavage. The qualitative course of chromatin diminution is rather similar in all three species. The same combination of three Cyclops species (without C. vicinus) was also found in an older sample (1990) from another ephemeral pond near Lake Constance. A close genetical relationship between the three species seems probable.  相似文献

Over the past 5 years, raphidophyte blooms have been frequently observed along the South Carolina coastal zone. During the 2002, 2003, and 2004 sampling seasons, we investigated temporal fluctuations of algicidal bacteria abundance against raphidophycean flagellates (Heterosigma akashiwo, Chattonella subsalsa, and Fibrocapsa japonica) using the microplate most probable number (MPN) method in three Kiawah Island brackish stormwater detention ponds (K1, K2, and K75). Local axenic isolates of H. akashiwo, C. subsalsa, and F. japonica were obtained and their susceptibility to algicidal bacteria tested. A total of 195 algicidal bacterial strains were isolated from raphidophyte blooms in the study ponds, and 6 of them were identified at the genus level, and the taxonomic specificity of their algicidal activity was tested against local (pond) and nonlocal isolates of raphidophytes (3 species, 10 total strains). In the ponds, a consistent association was found between raphidophyte bloom development and an increase in bacteria algicidal to the bloom species. In 12 of 15 cases, bloom decline followed the increase in algicidal bacteria to maximum abundances. Although variability was found in the taxonomic specificity of the algicidal bacteria effect (i.e. the number of raphidophyte species affected by a particular bacteria strain) and raphidophyte susceptibility (i.e. the number bacteria strains affecting a particular raphidophyte species), a toxic effect was always found when strains of a raphidophyte species were exposed to algicidal bacteria isolated from a bloom caused by that same species. The results suggest that algicidal bacteria may be an important limiting factor in raphidophyte bloom sustenance and can promote bloom decline in brackish lagoonal eutrophic estuaries.  相似文献

Three species of Corixidae (Hemiptera : Heteroptera) were studied in thirty montane, sub-alpine, and alpine ponds in Western Colorado. Callicorixa audeni Hung, had the widest altitudinal range (2800-3400 m). Cenocorixa bifida Hung, was most common in montane ponds. Arctocorisa lawsoni Hung, was found only above 3100 m. C. audeni was significantly associated with C. bifida and A. lawsoni. Habitat selection was studied in two montane (2900 m) and one alpine (3480 m) pond. C. audeni utilized both mud and emergent sedges as perching and feeding sites, occurring more frequently in the sedges in the montane ponds. C. bifida was confined to the mud. In the alpine pond, A. lawsoni was most abundant on the mud; C. audeni occurred equally on the mud and in the sedges. All three species preferred shallow water (less than 0·5 m). A. lawsoni occupied deeper water more often than C. audeni. In substrate selection experiments C. audeni occupied emergent sedges more than C. bifida, confirming field observations. C. bifida occurred in sedges in the aquaria, but not in the montane ponds, suggesting that an interspecific interaction may be excluding C. bifida from the sedges in nature.  相似文献
