Studies on exogenous application of phenolic compoundsviz: p-hydroxybenzoic acid, resorcinol and chlorogenic acid each with concentration of 10-4 M are done on the legume (Cajanus cajan (L.)Millsp.) AL-15. The effect of applied phenolic compounds as well as of structural differences in phenols indicate a marked influence of phenolic compounds in regulating growth processes in plants. Fresh and dry mass of various plant parts increased after foliar spray with phenols resulting in an improved harvest index. It is seen that phenols also play an important role in the initiation and development of nodules.  相似文献

The effects of rice plants treated with various pesticides (jingganmycin, bisultap and methamidophos) on feeding, survival rates and population growth of Nilaparvata lugens Stål (Homoptera: Delphacidae), susceptibility of the treated rice plants and amounts of free amino acids and sucrose were studied. Experiments indicated that the effects of the tested pesticides were dependent on nymphal age, pesticide and their dose and time after application. Jingganmycin at 75 g a.i. ha–1 significantly increased the N. lugens population. Both jingganmycin and bisultap increased the survival rate of N. lugens nymphs. The feeding rate of the insects was also affected by the pesticide application, but the effect varied between nymphal age and time after application and lasted no longer than 15 d. Results clearly indicated that pesticide application increased the susceptibility of rice plants to N. lugens. Although the free amino acids in rice plants did not change with the pesticide treatments, the concentration of sucrose significantly decreased 5 d after application and the C/N ratio significantly decreased in jingganmycin treated plants 5 d and 10 d after application.  相似文献

The allelopathy of a serious weed, barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli L.), was investigated. Root exudates of young barnyard grass showed allelopathic effects and plant-selective activity and inhibited root elongation of all plants tested. With respect to shoot growth, the exudates did not show inhibition of barnyard grass only. The allelopathic substance was isolated and identified as p-hydroxymandelic acid by NMR. p-Hydroxymandelic acid strongly inhibited shoot growth and root elongation of all plants tested. The effects of three congeners of p-hydroxymandelic acid were tested on rice shoot growth. In the biological activity exhibited in rice, shoot growth was related to the hydroxyl groups. A considerable amount of p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid was isolated from the culture filtrate of Hypochnus sasakii.

p-Hydroxyphenylacetic acid induced wilt of soybean plant and retarded the growth of rice seedlings at concentrations up to 1:20,000. The O2 uptake in roots decreased in proportion to reduction of dry weight of rice seedlings.  相似文献

The N2 fixed by Azolla before and after urea application during the rice cycle, the mineralisation of Azolla-N as well as its availability to rice was studied in two greenhouse experiments conducted in 1996 and 1997 and in June 1998 in Goettingen (Germany). Dry matter production of the various rice parts of experiment 1 showed a clear positive synergism between treatment with Azolla and urea with a resulting apparent N recovery by rice increasing from 40% (without Azolla) to 57% in the presence of Azolla. Part of this increase may be due to N fixed biologically by Azolla and transferred to the rice. The second experiment shed some light on the role of BNF. Using an iterative method of estimation, the daily rate of N fixation was estimated at 0.6 – 0.7 kg N ha–1. The rate was not so much affected by the age of the Azolla crop. At this rate, the BNF would amount to up to 100 kg N ha–1 over a 130-day season. Assuming that BNF may be inhibited for a period of 5 – 10 days following urea application due to high levels of N in the floodwater, this might reduce the BNF by between 6 and 14 kg N ha over the season. Using the mean-pool-abundance concept, it was estimated that around 75 – 80% of the Azolla-N mineralized during the growth period was actually absorbed by the rice plants. Of the N taken up by rice around 28% was derived from the biologically fixed Azolla N, the remainder was urea N cycled through the Azolla. Azolla also seems to help sustain the soil N supply by returning N to the soil in quantities roughly equal to those extracted from the soil by the rice plant.  相似文献

Allelochemicals released by rice roots and residues in soil   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
A few rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties or rice straw produce and release allelochemicals into soil in which interfere with the growth of neighboring or successive plants. Allelopathic rice PI312777 and Huagan-1 at their early growth stages released momilactone B, 3-isopropyl-5-acetoxycyclohexene-2-one-1, and 5,7,4′-trihydroxy-3′,5′-dimethoxyflavone into soil at phytotoxic levels, but non-allelopathic rice Huajingxian did not. Both allelopathic and non-allelopathic rice residues released momilactone B and lignin-related phenolic acids (p-hydroxybenzoic, p-coumaric, ferulic, syringic and vanillic acids) into the soil during residue decomposition to inhibit successive plants. The results indicated that allelochemicals involved in rice allelopathy from living and dead plants are substantially different. Interestingly, the concentrations of the allelochemicals released from the allelopathic rice seedlings in soil increased dramatically when they were surrounded with Echinochloa crus-galli. The concentrations of the allelochemicals were over 3-fold higher in the presence of E. crus-galli than in the absence of E. crus-galli. However, the same case did not occur in non-allelopathic Huajingxian seedlings surrounded with E. crus-galli. In addition to allelochemical exudation being promoted by the presence of E. crus-galli, allelopathic rice seedlings also increased allelochemical exudation in response to exudates of germinated E. crus-galli seeds or lepidimoide, an uronic acid derivative exuded from E. crus-galli seeds. These results imply that allelopathic rice seedlings can sense certain allelochemicals released by E. crus-galli into the soil, and respond by increased production of allelochemicals inhibitory to E. crus-galli. This study suggests that rice residues of both allelopathic and non-allelopathic varieties release similar concentrations and types of allelochemicals to inhibit successive plants. In contrast, living rice plants of certain allelopathic varieties appear to be able to detect the presence of interspecific neighbors and respond by increased allelochemicals.  相似文献

Biochar may affect the root morphology and nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) of rice at seedling stage, which has not been clearly verified until now. To clarify it, we conducted a pot experiment regarding to two soil types (Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol), two biochar application rates (0.5 wt% and 1.5 wt %) and two rice varieties (common rice var. Xiushui134 and hybrid super rice var. Zhongkejiayou12-6) meanwhile. Seedling NUE of common rice Xiuhui134 was significantly increased (p < 0.05) by 78.2% in Hydragric Anthrosol and by 91.4% in Haplic Acrisol following biochar addition with 1.5 wt%. However, biochar addition exerted no influence on seedling NUE of super rice Zhongkejiayou12-6 in both soils. Overall, 0.09–0.10 units higher soil pH and 105– 116% higher soil NH4+ -N were observed in Xiushui134 growing two soils with 1.5 wt% biochar. In addition, improved root morphology (including longer root length, larger root surface area, bigger root volume, and more root tips) contributed to the higher seedling NUE of Xiushui134 in two soils. The soil pH and NH4+ -N content, also the root morphology were influenced by biochar, which though could not thoroughly explained the NUE of Zhongkejiayou12-6. In conclusion, biochar application to paddy soil changed soil pH and NH4+ -N content, root growth, and the consequent seedling NUE of rice, which effects are relative with rice cultivar, biochar addition rate, and soil type.  相似文献

The root cell walls of the resistant cultivars of the date palm were more resistant to the action of the cell wall-degrading enzymes (CWDE) of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. albedinis than those of the susceptible cultivars. Date palm roots contain four cell wall-bound phenolics identified as p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid and sinapic acid. The contents of p-coumaric acid and ferulic acid in the resistant cultivars (IKL, SLY, BSTN) were about 2 times higher than those in the susceptible cultivars (BFG, JHL, BSK). The contents of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and sinapic acid in the resistant cultivars were 8.4 and 4.5 times, respectively, higher than those in the susceptible cultivars. The lignin contents in roots of the resistant cultivars were 1.8 times higher than those of the susceptible cultivars. The cell wall-bound phenols accumulated particularly in resistant cultivars reduced strongly the mycelial growth and the CWDE production in vitro.  相似文献

Abstract: Diurnal changes in starch, sugar and amino acid concentrations in source leaves, sink leaves and roots of tobacco plants were determined. In addition to wild type tobacco, transformed plants deficient in root nitrate reductase and exhibiting decreased rates of growth were employed. Further, the growth rates of tobacco plants were modulated by exposure to elevated pCO2. From the diurnal alterations in metabolite concentrations, the daily turnover of starch and amino N was estimated in order to: (i) elucidate whether turnover rates can be related to growth rates, and (ii) identify individual amino compounds with the potential to indicate nitrogen fluxes and the C/N status of plants. Elevated pCO2 increased growth rates and daily turnover of starch in both wild type and transformed plants, indicating enhanced rates of photosynthesis. In wild type plants, elevated pCO2 increased the turnover of amino N, notably glutamine and alanine, in mature source leaves, indicating enhanced nitrate reduction. By contrast, amino N turnover in source leaves of transformed plants was not affected by elevated pCO2, although nitrate reduction was presumably enhanced. Apparently, export of amino N was increased from the source leaves of transformed plants. This assumption was supported by a significantly increased turnover of amino N in young sink leaves compared to mature source leaves, indicating a preference for acropetal amino N allocation and import into the young leaves of the transformed plants. Further, elevated pCO2 increased the allocation of leaf‐derived amino N to the roots of transformed plants. This led to increased levels of amino compounds during the entire day, notably glutamate, but did not affect root growth of the transformed plants. The suitability of individual amino compounds as markers for major N fluxes, such as nitrate reduction, photorespiration, and amino N export and import is discussed.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) fertilizers are a major input cost in rice production, and its excess application leads to major environmental pollution. Development of rice varieties with improved nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is essential for sustainable agriculture. Here, we report the results of field evaluations of marker‐free transgenic NERICA4 (New Rice for Africa 4) rice lines overexpressing barley alanine amino transferase (HvAlaAT) under the control of a rice stress‐inducible promoter (pOsAnt1). Field evaluations over three growing seasons and two rice growing ecologies (lowland and upland) revealed that grain yield of pOsAnt1:HvAlaAT transgenic events was significantly higher than sibling nulls and wild‐type controls under different N application rates. Our field results clearly demonstrated that this genetic modification can significantly increase the dry biomass and grain yield compared to controls under limited N supply. Increased yield in transgenic events was correlated with increased tiller and panicle number in the field, and evidence of early establishment of a vigorous root system in hydroponic growth. Our results suggest that expression of the HvAlaAT gene can improve NUE in rice without causing undesirable growth phenotypes. The NUE technology described in this article has the potential to significantly reduce the need for N fertilizer and simultaneously improve food security, augment farm economics and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from the rice ecosystem.  相似文献

Aims: To evaluate the effect of wine phenolic compounds on the production of volatile phenols (4‐vinylphenol [4VP] and 4‐ethylphenol [4EP]) from the metabolism of p‐coumaric acid by lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Methods and Results: Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus collinoides and Pediococcus pentosaceus were grown in MRS medium supplemented with p‐coumaric acid, in the presence of different phenolic compounds: nonflavonoids (hydroxycinnamic and benzoic acids) and flavonoids (flavonols and flavanols). The inducibility of the enzymes involved in the p‐coumaric acid metabolism was studied in resting cells. The hydroxycinnamic acids tested stimulated the capacity of LAB to synthesize volatile phenols. Growth in the presence of hydroxycinnamic acids, especially caffeic acid, induced the production of 4VP by resting cells. The hydroxybenzoic acids did not significantly affect the behaviour of the studied strains. Some of the flavonoids showed an effect on the production of volatile phenols, although strongly dependent on the bacterial species. Relatively high concentrations (1 g l?1) of tannins inhibited the synthesis of 4VP by Lact. plantarum. Conclusions: Hydroxycinnamic acids were the main compounds stimulating the production of volatile phenols by LAB. The results suggest that caffeic and ferulic acids induce the synthesis of the cinnamate decarboxylase involved in the metabolism of p‐coumaric acid. On the other hand, tannins exert an inhibitory effect. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study highlights the capacity of LAB to produce volatile phenols and that this activity is markedly influenced by the phenolic composition of the medium.  相似文献

In agro-ecosystems,plants are important mediators of interactions between their associated herbivorous insects and microbes, and any change in plants induced by one species may lead to cascading effects on interactions with other species.Often, such effects are regulated by phytohormones such as jasmonic acid(JA)and salicylic acid(SA).Here,we investigated the tripartite interactions among rice plants, three insect herbivores(Chilo suppressalis,Cnaphalocrocis medinalis or Nilapai-vata lugens),and the causal agent of rice blast disease, the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae. We found that pre-infestation of rice by C.suppressalis or N.lugens but not by C.medinalis conferred resistance to M.oryzae.For C.suppressalis and N.lugens, insect infestation without fungal inoculation induced the accumulation of both JA and SA in rice leaves. In contrast, infestation by C.medinalis increased JA levels but reduced SA levels. The exogenous application of SA but not of JA conferred resistance against M.oryzae.These results suggest that preinfestation by C suppressalis or N.lugens conferred resistance against M.oryzae by increasing SA accumulation. These findings enhance our understanding of the interactions among rice plant, insects and pathogens, and provide valuable information for developing an ecologically sound strategy for controlling rice blast.  相似文献

Summary Many species of Eucalyptus, one of the dominant genera in Australian forests and woodlands, contain high levels of tannins and other phenols and are also heavily damaged by grazing insects. These phenols do not appear to affect insect attack because a wide range of concentrations of condensed tannins and other phenols in leaves of 13 Eucalyptus sp. influenced neither feeding rates of Paropsis atomaria larvae, nor their nitrogen use efficiencies. We discuss reasons why tannins may not appreciably reduce the availability of nitrogen (N) to these insects. Performance was directly related to leaf N concentration, and growth rates, N gains, and N use efficiencies all increased as leaf N content increased, although absolute feeding rates remained constant. These relationships differ from those found in insects feeding on other plants, and we suggest that the low N contents common in Eucalyptus leaves may be responsble. We propose that the extensive damage observed in many eucalypts is in part related to the high feeding rates maintained by individual larvae. To whom offprint requests shouid be sent  相似文献

32P-labeled organophosphorus fungicide Hinosan was sprayed on rice plants at various growth stages, and metabolic fate of the pesticide in the rice plants was studied. Identification of Hinosan and its metabolites in the n-hexane and water extracts was conducted by TLC and GLC (FPD).

The rate of hydrolysis of Hinosan in rice plants seemed to be slower than that of other organophosphorus pesticides. Hexane-soluble components, which were detected throughout the experimental period, consisted mainly of Hinosan. Among the water-soluble metabolites identified were O-ethyl S-phenyl phosphorothioic acid and S,S-diphenyl phosphoro- dithioic acid, which were detected one to four days after the application, and ethyl phosphate and phosphoric acid which increased with the lapse of time.

Upon examination of the radioactivity of Hinosan and its metabolites in rice grains, a certain level was detected in husk, but very little in hulled rice and polished rice.  相似文献

When following the pattern of the disappearance of NH 4 + –N from ammonium sulfate applied to the flooded soil-rice plant system (field and greenhouse experiments) during a growing season, it was observed that the lowest NH 4 + –N level coincided with the highest value of NR activity in the leaves. Nitrate was detected in both the root and shoot systems of the rice plants and autotrophic nitrifiers (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) were particularly abundant. Since it was also demonstrated in this work that the NR activity of rice plants grown with nitrate fertilization (growth chamber culture experiments) was inducible by its substrate, it can be assumed that NH 4 + –N oxidation takes place in the water-logged soil studied. Therefore, the occurrence of the nitrification process following NH 4 + –N fertilizer application can be predicted by thein vitro orin situ evaluation of the NR activity of the rice leaf as an indicator.  相似文献

A glasshouse pot experiment was conducted to study the effects of phytoextraction by Sedum plumbizincicola and application of rapeseed cake (RSC) on heavy metal accumulation by a subsequent rice (Oryza sativa L.) crop in a contaminated paddy soil collected from east China. After phytoextraction by S. plumbizincicola the soil and brown rice Cd concentrations effectively declined. After phytoextraction, RSC application reduced brown rice Cd concentrations in the subsequent rice crop to 0.23–0.28 mg kg?1, almost down to the standard limit (0.2 mg kg?1). After phytoextraction and then application of RSC, the soil solution pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) concentrations increased during early stages of rice growth resulting directly and indirectly in lowering the bioavailability of the heavy metals. Thus the grain yield of the subsequent rice crop increased and the heavy metals in the brown rice declined significantly. In this contaminated acid soil, growing the hyperaccumulator S. plumbizincicola and rice in rotation together with RSC application may therefore be regarded as a viable strategy for safe grain production and bioremediation.  相似文献

In the presence of sublethal concentrations of phenol, 4-chlorophenol, and p-cresol in the growth medium, cells of Escherichia coli modified the fatty acid composition of their lipids. The result of these changes was an increase in the degree of saturation of lipids probably in order to compensate an increase of fluidity of the membrane induced by the phenols. Supplementation of the growth medium with saturated fatty acids could also enhance the degree of lipid saturation due to the incorporation of the acyl chains in the phospholipids. At the same time the growth of cells was less inhibited than in unsupplemented cells. The increase of tolerance of cells by manipulating the lipid composition indicates that the membrane structure plays a crucial role in the mode of action of phenols.  相似文献

Nitrogen losses are notoriously high in flooded rice fertilized with urea. An Azolla intercrop can reduce such losses by immobilizing urea-N during periods of potentially high N-loss. The reduction in N loss linked with the absorption and remobilization of urea-N by Azolla, was studied in two greenhouse experiments conducted in Goettingen (Germany). Grain yield and N recovery were positively influenced by Azolla more than doubling grain yield and N uptake as compared to the split application of 300 mg N pot–1 alone (Exp. 1). In the second experiment, the yield increase was 78.3% with single applications of 97.5 and 68.4% after a split-application of a total of 195 mg N pot–1. In both years the effect of urea and Azolla combined exceeded that of the sum of the factors alone, a clear positive synergistic effect on yield and N uptake by rice. Azolla effectively competed with the young rice plants for applied urea, capturing nearly twice the urea-N than the rice plants up to tillering in experiment 1. In the second experiment, 64.6 mg N of the 97.5 mg applied early in the season was immobilized by Azolla within 2 weeks. This represented 63.1% of the total N accumulated in the Azolla. The fraction of Azolla-N derived from urea sank to 36.4 mg within 4 weeks and only 27.2 mg at maximum tillering as a result of Azolla senescence and N-release. Of this 64.6 mg urea N immobilized 28.7% is eventually taken up by the standing rice plant, representing 43.1% of the remineralized, urea-derived Azolla N. Following the second urea application, only 17.9 mg N were immobilized in the Azolla biomass during the 2 weeks, of which 6.9 mg pot–1 were still retained in the Azolla at maturity. At this stage, rice is the more effective competitor for applied N. As much as 42.1% of this immobilized N finds its way into the rice by maturity. Thus, Azolla contributed to the conservation of N in the system, particularly of the urea applied early in the season. Loss of N from the system amounted to no more than 15%. Although the early-applied N directly recovered by the rice plant was low (20%), 2/3 of the N captured by Azolla following this first urea application was released to the system by the time of rice harvest, over 40% of which was available to the rice plant. Azolla thus appears to act as a slow release fertilizer.  相似文献

Summary The symbiotic association of the water fernAzolla with the blue-green algaAnabaena azollae can fix 30–60 kg N ha–1 per rice cropping season. The value of this fixed N for rice production, however, is only realized once the N is released from theAzolla biomass and taken up by the rice plants. The availability of N applied asAzolla or as urea was measured in field experiments by two15N methods. In the first,Azolla caroliniana (Willd.) was labelled with15N in nutrient solution and incorporated into the soil at a rate of 144 kg N ha–1. The recovery ofAzolla-N in the above ground parts of rice [Oryza sativa (L) cv. Nucleoryza] was found to be 32% vs. 26% for urea applied at a rate of 100 kg N/ha; there was no significant difference in recovery. In the second, 100 kg N/ha of15N-urea was applied separately or in combination with either 250 or 330 kg N ha–1 of unlabelledAzolla. At the higher rate, the recovery ofAzolla-N was significantly greater than that of urea. There was a significant interaction when both N sources were applied together, which resulted in a greater recovery of N from each source in comparison to that source applied separately. Increasing the combined urea andAzolla application rate from 350 kg N ha–1 to 430 kg N ha–1 increased the N yield but had no effect on the dry matter yield of rice plants. The additional N taken up at the higher level of N application accumulated to a greater extent in the straw compared to the panicles. Since no assumptions need to be made about the contribution of soil N in the method using15N-labelledAzolla, this method is preferable to the15N dilution technique for assessing the availability ofAzolla-N to rice. Pot trials usingAzolla stored at –20°C or following oven-drying showed that both treatments decreased the recovery of N by one third in comparison to freshAzolla.  相似文献
